Are you sitting down? Really? We don't mean that in the figurative internet sense, we mean it in the "please put your butt on a flat surface and brace yourself" sense. Ready? ... EA is making Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. Don't worry, we'll give you a second to return your eyeballs to your head after they comically extend three inches from their sockets. Guess which systems it's coming out for. Did you guess everything from 360s and PS3s to microwave oven readouts and pocket watches? Then you're totally right. Did you suspect that the game would be released around the same time as the movie of the same name this November? Alright Professor Trelawney, where are you hiding that crystal ball?

Our one hope, and we know that this won't happen, is for the games to evolve in their maturity level and tone just like the books grew progressively darker. But we'll probably just end up waving our Wiimotes around using magic to make Hagrid a sandwich or something.
Brace yourself: EA is making Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 23 Apr 2008 10:30:00 EST. That's what they say. Publishing monolith EA has announced that four of its Cider-powered Mac OS X titles are now available to purchase on Apple's online store today. The initial burst looks to satisfy a variety of Intel Mac gamers, including those who are partial to waging futuristic war (Battlefield 2142!), owning totally sick rides (Need for Speed Carbon!), casting ex-crucio-ting spells (Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix!) and, uh, waging even more futuristic war (Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars!).

The games will also materialize on minimalistic shelves within Apple retail stores, with Potter and Need For Speed arriving on Tuesday, 21 August. Battlefield 2142 and Tiberium Wars should arrive the following week on 28 August. Though the tardy titles, namely Tiger Woods PGA Tour 08 and Madden NFL 08, were promised to arrive on the same day as other systems at WWDC, you can now expect their respective balls to come crashing through the "September/October window."
Hoor-EA!
You know we couldn't let the release of the final Harry Potter book slip by without some sort of nod in its general direction! Not only did we warn you, but we've indicated in the past that a few of us tend to be Potter fans around here. If you're not, please, bear with us, and we'll try to be a little less specific next week. But if you are, please join us in this presentation of Potter-themed Miis!

For those who, like us, have been avoiding anything about the series on the internet, we assure you, these Miis are limited to characters from earlier books -- so breathe a sigh of relief. We're safe.

The precocious wizard Harry Potter, despite not really existing, has managed to cast a spell to lower the price of his DS game by ten dollars, to $19.99. Uh-oh, it's magic! He can only keep it up for one day, and only on one site (Amazon.com) because it takes too much strength to maintain such powerful magic, and Harry's got to get his sleep for, we don't know, a Potions test or a Quidditch match or whatever the funniest Harry Potter reference would be.

Though it would delay the shipping and nullify the release-date guarantee, we'd like to remind you that adding this to your order of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows would make the order eligible for free shipping. The DS game includes a children's movie ticket for the Order of the Phoenix movie as well, so if you can legitimately pass for a child (or if you are a child), you could have a triple threat of Potter media consumption in one order.
Harry Potter and the Combined Order for Free Shipping originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 18 Jul 2007 09:50:00 EST.
You may not have noticed (because, uh, you apparently live under a rock inside a cave) that Harry Potter fans have a lot of reasons to be excited right now. There's a new movie and a new book on the horizon (ohgodnospoilersplz), and we thought it might be a good time to celebrate our Harry Potter love by dedicating this week's Mii Spotlight to all things Potter. So if you (or someone you know) has a Potter-themed Mii banging around the ol' Plaza, snap some pictures and send them our way at mii [at] nintendowiifanboy [dot] com. Usually, we get excited by demos, heaven knows they've gotten us through some hard times, but we have a huge problem with this new one for Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix on Xbox Live. Namely, we can't believe the segment of the game the decided to feature. Why not just have an introductory level or two? Why not show Harry running around Hogwarts? Why in the name of all that is holy would they just show the scene where Harry gets drunk and walks in on Ron and Hermione making out before killing them both?

That's not a particularly fun scene to play, and honestly, if you haven't read the books it might ruin a couple of minor plot lines for you. (Oh, spoiler alert, BTW.) Why not just have a demo of the scene from the sixth book where Harry 's parents come back to life only to die in a skiing accident, if you want to ruin the whole thing for people? ... But we were a little premature in calling Bringing it Home finished, as Major Nelson just sent word that a Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix demo just went live. Major also confirms that this Harry Potter demo officially marks the end of E3 Bringing it Home and so we advise taking a look at the completely complete list of Bringing it Home content we've gathered for you after the break. No heartfelt goodbye this time Bringing it Home, because it's too painful the second time around.
Continue reading Bringing it Home Wrap: Harry Potter demo too

Bringing it Home Wrap: Harry Potter demo too originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 13 Jul 2007 13:45:00 EST. Today's Penny Arcade comic is a cautionary tale for all the gamers out there who lose themselves in the Wii's heightened brand of immersion, flapping their hands and dressing in costume for that authentic experience.

With Harry Potter mania being at an all time high -- several video games, a new movie, and the final book all within a few weeks' reach -- we're at our most vulnerable. Guarding ourselves against these embarrassing exposures should be priority one. Remember that the next time you start riding your mother's broom during a mock Quidditch match and notice a red light blinking in one of the room's air vents.
Harry Potter and the Order of the Dweebs originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 09 Jul 2007 18:20:00 EST. In all, we've got Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (girlish squeal!), Overlord (which we can't download for some reason), and a trailer for Conan. Conan, perhaps, deserves the most attention. Unfortunately, that's not because it's the best of the three (far from it, in fact). Not to be confused with the Age of Conan MMO from Funcom, Conan, quite frankly, just looks awful. The gameplay looks decent enough, but the graphics lack anything even resembling polish. Seriously, it's like they decided to release a trailer of an alpha build (which may be exactly what it is). The character models themselves look alright, but they seem completely separate from the environment, like they're really in front of a green screen. Joystiq seemed to be impressed by the game back in March, so we remain hopeful that the final product will be a solid experience.
Loads of new game trailers on XBLM originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 27 Jun 2007 10:30:00 EST. Not only do we finally get to sample the heart-eating goodness of The Darkness (a game we're giving away, by the way), but we also have a plethora of other games arriving as well. In fact, there are so many games coming out this week, we're going to whip out (that's right) a bulleted list. Behold:

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

The Bigs

Ratatouille

That's a lot of games. We're particularly excited about Overlord, which has been sitting patiently in our rental queue for some time. Are you planning on picking up any of these titles?
Shipping this week: eat your heart out edition originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 25 Jun 2007 16:45:00 EST. Harry Potter and the Order of the Pheonix Achievements have shown up in a puff of smoke. Despite that two of the secret Achievements haven't been uncovered yet, the other 39 look pretty straightforward, making this game appear to be an Achievement Whore's dream. A good portion are devoted to completing tasks throughout the game, though we're not certain if those directly related to the main campaign or if they're extracurricular. Do you plan on playing around in Hogwarts with this game upon release?
Harry Potter Achievements magically appear originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 25 Jun 2007 07:45:00 EST. Quite a well populated list. There's no real way anyone can complain about this week's releases. Unless you're a European The Darkness fan. Don't forget, though. If there's a game that's only available in another region, then feel free to import it. Your PlayStation 3 won't care. Release dates are subject to constant change, so give your local game shop a ring before walking down there.

Which of this week's releases will you be picking up? We've already got our copies of The Darkness ordered.
Worldwide PlayStation 3 releases for the week of June 25th originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 24 Jun 2007 08:30:00 EST. EA has just launched the official website for the upcoming Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix videogame. While we only grudgingly admit our penchant for Potter and pals, this latest game looks like it might contain real magic after all. Sandbox-style mission-based gameplay "inspired" by GTA lets you explore Hogwarts on your own schedule, reliving moments from the book along the way. The Wii version of the multiplatform game looks especially interesting with its motion-sensitive spellcasting. The website features a trailer, fact sheets, and a fistful of screenshots from several platforms. The Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix game is set for a June 25 release in the US.
Harry Potter website unleashes a little magic originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 16 Jun 2007 09:30:00 EST. We were taken aback by these screens of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. They look fantastic. It could be using prerendered backgrounds to display these artistic views of Hogwarts, but whatever it is, it's working. Whenever Harry is walking around the (strangely empty) building, it's breathtaking, and one of the nicest-looking adventure games we've seen on any platform.

And then we see the other screenshots. The combat-- for which you apparently rotate the DS Brain Age style, and the magical minigames. They might be fun, but they don't quite evoke ICO in the same way as the environments do. Oh, well, this is still amazing for an EA licensed game.

Harry Potter and the Gallery of Screenshots originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 13 Jun 2007 16:00:00 EST. According to our calculations, the free ticket comes in at a value of 27.98% of the Wii game's cost. Of course, we don't think you should pick up the game solely for the free ticket, but we won't lie and say that the game doesn't look fun.

So, were any of you planning on picking this up before the news?
The best sort of Miis seem to be made from those people who already look like walking caricatures -- the kind of people who have such distinctive features that you could guess their identity from seeing only their left eye, perhaps, or their signature grin. So it follows, of course, that iconic characters also tend to make for good Mii material, though not always, as we here at the Fanboy learned ourselves to our great chagrin ....
Continue reading Mii Spotlight: Pop culture goes Mii

Mii Spotlight: Pop culture goes Mii originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 02 Jun 2007 19:00:00 EST. Tables are levitated, chairs are tossed about and we imagine any JK Rowling fan is trying to roll their tongue back into their mouth right about now. The videos demonstrate a few of Harry's spells and give us a look round Hogwarts. We'll be casting the spells with a flick of the Wiimote, and maybe even incanting them through the mic.

Like Bertie Bott's Every Flavour Beans, the Harry Potter games have been a bit of a mixed bag in the past; Goblet of Fire, for instance, was very much a bogey. This one, however, is looking and sounding very promising. If EA can capture the feel of Hogwarts in the game and get that elusive sandbox gameplay working, then this could be a real treat.
Order of the Phoenix looking good originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 13 May 2007 11:38:00 EST. Surely, one can easily imagine flicking the Wiimote right or left to perform any number of magical tasks from Harry's incredible repertoire of spells. EA has finally commented, however, to some degree on specific movements and how they'll perform in-game actions.

The gesture-based gameplay, which naturally suits itself to spell-casting we believe, isn't only going to be limited to Harry and his wand, as it will be incorporated into other facets of the game as well. EA Executive producer Harvey Elliot reveals that one aspect of the game will have ask players to "slide the Sixaxis or Wii Remote from side to side as though you were lighting a match," choosing to leave us in the dark on the specifics of what this will actually do in-game.

Elliot does, however, explain a bit as to the difference in controls between all systems it is set to grace. Elliot says "So if you want to use 'depulso' to push an object away from you, you press the right analogue stick forward on the 360 and PS2, you push the Sixaxis controller away from you on the PS3, and, of course, you flick your 'wand' away from you on the Wii."
Harry Potter fans get a wand in the Wiimote originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 03 May 2007 15:15:00 EST. Taking advantage of that momentum, EA released 3 new screens to the muggle world today, including one from the game's climatic battle with "he who must not be named." While we were mildly excited by the trailer, our hope has been dashed by screens that look like they're from a mediocre PS2 release (at best). Of course, EA knows that they don't have to put their best foot forward here... anything with the Harry Potter label is going to sell well.

[Via Gamers Hell]
New Harry Potter screens put the PS2 back in the PS3 originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 30 Apr 2007 22:30:00 EST. They've already locked in their orders for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the 7th and last book in the series. The movies and games, unfortunately, lag far behind their literary brethren thanks to very long production schedules. As such, we're just now rolling around to Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix -- the 5th book -- on the big screen and in video game form. Still, if the early screens (courtesy of X360 Daily) are anything to go by, the game looks to be shaping up quite nicely. The character models are very detailed, and the spell effects look decent too. We also know that the game is getting a sandbox-style makeover, so fans should really get a kick out of exploring Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. That's just a bit of fun sensationalism from your responsible journalist friends at Wii Fanboy.

We're really invoking the GTA name because EA UK's new game is going to feature the sandbox-style gameplay made famous by Rockstar's series. Mission triggers will be hidden all over, and you are free to explore and take on side missions. This means that you'll potentially have more choice to explore Hogwarts and the surrounding areas than Harry Potter ever did, as he seems to get railroaded from situation to situation without any choice at all. Uh, not that we ever read ... or saw ... any Harry Potter stuff. Oh, never mind-- we're all about children's books. That's right.

Also, one of the most obvious Wiimote uses ever has been implemented: Wiimote as wand. Wiimote gestures will allow you to cast spells and manipulate levitated objects. With the exception of Chamber of Secrets, which managed a metacritic score of 77, all of the Harry Potter game adaptations have scored in the mid-to-high 60s.

The Order of the Phoenix game will come out for three Nintendo systems (DS, GBA, and Wii), three PlayStations (PS 2, 3 and P), and two Microsoft formats (Xbox 360 and Windows PC). Both the GameCube and original Xbox are now officially forgotten.

A new 20-second teaser for the film can be found -- for some reason or another -- at the website for Warner Bros.' Happy Feet.

[Via 1UP]
Order of the Phoenix going next-gen originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 22 Nov 2006 18:30:00 EST. The movie, which is based on J.K Rowling's fifth book, has Harry returning to Hogwart's only to be questioned about his previous year's encounter with Lord Voldemort. With the wizarding community questioning that Lord Voldemort has returned, as well as the Minister of Magic doubting Dumbledore, it's all up to Harry to set things straight.

In coming to the Wii, what should we expect? More than likely, mini-game scenarios where the player will use the Wiimote as a wand (maybe zapping bats coming at you?). Nothing specific has been said regarding the Wii version of the game, so it's all speculative right now, but we will update you as news develops.
New Harry Potter game under development originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 22 Nov 2006 10:55:00 EST. There the fans were divided into Hogwarts houses and entertained by an enthusiastic PR representative who is "known to do air-magic (as opposed to air-guitar)."

Not surprisingly, the writers geeked out on the "spine-tingling and spell binding" environments in the game and new features like the ability to wander around Hogwarts and some of its surroundings. The write-up also hints at some of the new characters and mini-games that will be represented in the game, before delving into some truly trivial Harry Potter minutiae.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix will be available for a mind-boggling eight systems (PSP, GBA, Nintendo DS, PS2, PC, Xbox 360, PS3 and the Nintendo Wii) when it comes out, likely in time for the July 2007 movie.

[Update: Picture replaced with one of our own Conrad Quilty-Harper to protect the innocent]
Harry Potter fan sites geek out for new game [update 1] originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 30 Aug 2006 12:25:00 EST. Meaning they'll come out within the first few months of the Wii's release. They may or may not be taking up shelf space on launch day. That said, Electronic Arts is supporting the Wii launch window with six titles, including a few offerings from wildly popular franchises like Madden and Tiger Woods PGA Tour. These titles were already announced for the Wii, but EA confirmed all six for the launch window at in Leipzig.

The full list:
