Well, it's tomorrow, and despite <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/08/rumor-microsoft-to-announce-blu-ray-360-tomorrow/">yesterday's rumor</a> that Microsoft would be announcing a Blu-ray equipped Xbox 360 today (that's yesterday's tomorrow, for those of you confused by that first clause), so far we've so far heard bupkis. In fact, we've heard less than bupkis if you take into account the <a href="http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2008/06/08/BUPF11383J.DTL">San Francisco Chronicle interview with Robbie Bach</a>, in which the Microsoft Entertainment &amp; Devices president downplays disc-based movie formats and stresses Microsoft's HD video downloads.<br /><br />"Xbox 360 has a great ability to deliver [high-definition experience] through the Xbox Live (online download) service," Bach said. "It's a great way to get the high-definition concept because it's right there. There's no additional media. There is nothing you need to purchase ... You have to look at how fundamentally compelling the difference is between a progressive scan DVD player and the picture that it can produce and what you get on a high-definition player. The reality is there is some difference, but most people look at it and say, 'I am not going to pay extra for that.'"<br /><br />The full interview also includes Bach's thoughts on in-game ads, the next-next-gen Xbox, and motion-sensitive controllers. Check it out.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/09/microsofts-bach-tamps-down-blu-ray-xbox-rumors/">Microsoft's Bach tamps down Blu-ray Xbox rumors</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 09 Jun 2008 12:00:00 EST. Amazon is joining the ranks of a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/19/best-buy-giving-50-gift-cards-to-hd-dvd-adopters/">few other retailers</a> in offering a consolation prize to those who purchased an HD DVD player. <a href="http://www.engadgethd.com/2008/04/09/amazon-offers-50-credit-for-those-who-purchased-an-hd-dvd-playe/">Engadget HD</a> has a letter from Amazon stating that customers who purchased an HD DVD player (including the Xbox 360 drive) prior to Feb. 23, 2008 are entitled to a $50 store credit. If you purchased an HD DVD player from Amazon be sure to check your email. <br /><br />While we're on the subject, don't forget to grab that spiffy <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/08/just-for-laughs-xbox-hd-dvd-player-gets-update/">new update available</a> for the Xbox 360 HD DVD player.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/09/amazon-offering-50-credit-to-hd-dvd-adopters/">Amazon offering $50 credit to HD DVD adopters</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 09 Apr 2008 22:00:00 EST. Not one to be outdone by the likes of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/19/best-buy-shows-the-money-to-hd-dvd-adopters/">Best Buy</a>, Amazon is now offering a $50 credit to anyone who purchased an <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/HD-DVD/">HD DVD</a> player from the website before <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/24/microsoft-haults-production-on-hd-dvd-add-on/">February 23, 2008</a>. Strangely enough, the credit can be redeemed for up to 10 players by any one customer. Why in the world anyone would buy 10 HD DVD players, we'll never know. Also, there are a few restrictions on the deal. The credit can't be used on "special-order titles, e-books or downloadable e-content, wireless service plans, gift certificates, gift-wrap, taxes, or shipping and handling charges." Still, it's not a bad offer and it's hard to argue with free money.<br /><br />Find a copy of the email being distributed by Amazon after the break.<br /><br />[Thanks, zlionsfan. <a href="http://majornelson.com/archive/2008/04/08/hd-dvd-update.aspx"> Major Nelson</a> has informed the populace that the next time one of the surviving members of the defeated HD DVD army watch a movie they'll be prompted with an auto update. No, the update will not magically convert the dead format into a Blu-ray player, sorry.<br /><br />Instead, the update will add "compatibility improvements with certain titles" and "additional support for network features." Xbox 360 owners without Live can <a href="http://www.xbox.com/en-US/hardware/x/xbox360hddvdplayer/download.htm">download the update</a> through Xbox.com later this week.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/08/just-for-laughs-xbox-hd-dvd-player-gets-update/">Just for laughs: Xbox HD DVD player gets update</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 08 Apr 2008 19:00:00 EST. Once connected to Xbox Live with a HD DVD player firmly integrated into your 360, you'll be prompted to download a new update that's said to help with compatibility issues with some titles and will add additional support for network features. Even though this update won't resurrect Toshiba's commitment to HD DVD, it should make your HD movie experience a tad bit more enjoyable.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/08/microsoft-rolls-out-360-hd-dvd-player-update/">Microsoft rolls out 360 HD DVD player update</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 08 Apr 2008 17:00:00 EST. ThinkGeek is certainly on a roll today with the April Fools hijinks. Not only do we have <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/01/april-fools-alert-5-super-pii-pii-brothers/"><em>Super Pii Pii Brothers</em> (and its bizarre peripheral)</a>, but now we have <em>Wii Sports</em> on the iPhone, as well as a <a href="http://www.thinkgeek.com/stuff/41/betamaxhd.html">conduit for shuffling between dead video formats</a>.<br /><br />The <em>Wii Sports</em> on iPhone gag is nothing more than an unclickable banner ad, making us wish the joke was taken a bit further. The Betamax to HD-DVD converter, on the other hand, is quite the stroke of genius. The idea alone is brilliant, made even more so by the "promotional" video, viewable after the break.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/01/april-fools-alert-10-wii-sports-on-iphone-and-utter-obsolesce/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>April Fools' Alert #10: Wii Sports on iPhone and utter obsolescence</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/01/april-fools-alert-10-wii-sports-on-iphone-and-utter-obsolesce/">April Fools' Alert #10: Wii Sports on iPhone and utter obsolescence</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 01 Apr 2008 18:30:00 EST. From now through May 2nd, Best Buy Canada is being generous by offering a <a href="http://www.bestbuy.ca/marketing/bluray_promo/EN/default.asp">free $50 gift card</a> to anyone who brings in a receipt proving that they have purchased a HD DVD player <strong>after</strong> January 1, 2007. And wouldn't you know some Best Buy's in Canada still have a few Xbox 360 HD DVD players laying around for $50. You see what we're saying? The "free" offer? That's right, you can grab a new 360 HD DVD player for $50 AND get a $50 gift card in the process, thus making your purchase technically free. Yes, your mileage will vary as our tipster xenocidic had to try two locations to get Best Buy to pony up a gift card, but it's worth a try if you're feeling some nostalgic HD DVD love.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://xenocidic.com/2008/03/31/i-love-best-buy-canada--hd-dvd-player-for-0.aspx">xenocidic</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/01/best-buy-canada-offers-free-360-hd-dvd-players/">Best Buy Canada offers 'free' 360 HD DVD players</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 01 Apr 2008 10:00:00 EST. <div align="left">Best Buy is looking to make good with all the unfortunate souls who purchased an <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/HD-DVD/">HD DVD</a> player or accessory (be it the 360 HD DVD player or another product) before the format was officially <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/24/microsoft-haults-production-on-hd-dvd-add-on/">declared kaput</a> on February 23, 2008. The company will issue $50 gift cards to customers that fall in this unfortunate category According to <a href="http://www.cnn.com/2008/TECH/ptech/03/19/best.buy.ap/index.html">CNN</a>, many consumers won't even have to lift a finger to receive their gift cards as Best Buy is using Rewards Zone and service plan records as well as records from online purchases to identify eligible customers. Those who don't fall into those categories can bring a Best Buy receipt or credit card statement to their local store in order to receive their gift card. Best Buy will also begin accepting returns on all HD DVD players through their online trade-in center starting March 21, so long as said players are returned within 90 days of purchase. Returns will be refunded with store credit. Unfortunately, Best Buy isn't accepting returns on HD DVD discs.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/19/best-buy-giving-50-gift-cards-to-hd-dvd-adopters/">Joystiq</a>]</div>

The first, of course, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/11/15/joystiq-poll-which-video-format-will-prevail/">is a viable format</a>, unique from all others currently on the market. The second is the persistence to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/04/warner-bros-goes-blu-ray-exclusive/">constantly push your format on as many film companies</a> and consumer electronics producers as you possibly can, to ensure your victory. Finally, should said victory never come, you must possess a strong stomach and a wide wallet -- as <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/16/toshiba-pulls-hd-dvd-support-blu-ray-wins/">losing a format war</a> is a costly and heartbreaking endeavor. <br /></div>
<br />According to the Nikkea Business Daily, <a href="http://www.digitaljournal.com/article/251617/Toshiba_Loses_its_Shirt_With_1_Billion_Bust_From_Failure_of_HD_DVD_Format">Toshiba is learning this lesson to the tune of a &yen;100 billion</a> loss in revenue this year (to grasp the magnitude of this loss, here it is in numeric form: &yen;100,000,000,000) or roughly $986 million in U.S. cash. We usually leave the economic speculation <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/pachter/">to the experts</a>, but we're pretty sure that's a large sum of money that Toshiba would rather not part with. But as they say, in order to make an omelet, you've got to break a few eggs; though sometimes, you have to break 100 billion eggs, only to find that nobody wants to eat your omelet. Okay, nobody says that.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/16/toshiba-reportedly-set-to-lose-nearly-1-billion-in-wake-of-hd-d/">Toshiba reportedly set to lose nearly $1 billion in wake of HD-DVD format death</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 16 Mar 2008 21:00:00 EST. If Euro Xbox boss Chris Lewis is to be believed, a dramatic consumer shift to digitally distributed media is due to occur "sooner than any of us think." With talks of an Xbox 360 Blu-ray add-on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/13/microsoft-not-in-talks-with-sony-over-xbox-360-blu-ray-drive/">now muted</a>, the manufacturer appears to be distancing itself from the Sony-backed high-def format. "Going forwards, digital downloads is really where it's at," Lewis told <a href="http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=34141">GamesIndustry.Biz</a>. "More and more people's ongoing and ever-increasing downloading of music and movies is becoming the de facto. I think that's going to happen in very short order; people want to consume that way."<br /><br />We definitely don't want to consume anything past its sell-by date either, as Lewis suggested we'll "look back wistfully at shiny discs as something that was somewhat a historic phenomenon in a way that we kind of think about vinyl or VCRs today." Though we don't outright disagree with Microsoft's same ol' song and dance, predicting a large change within the "next 12-18 months" seems overly optimistic. DVD doesn't look to be going anywhere soon, and neither does the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/13/february-npd-industry-sales-hit-1-33b-xbox-360-still-trailing/">sales traction</a> granted to the PS3 by Blu-ray's recent victory.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/14/ms-touts-digital-distribution-over-historic-discs/">MS touts digital distribution over 'historic' discs</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 14 Mar 2008 14:56:00 EST. In an interview with the <a href="http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/ca6017de-eba6-11dc-9493-0000779fd2ac.html">Financial Times</a>, Sony Electronics US president Stan Glasgow proclaimed, "Sony is in talks with console rival Microsoft about offering a Blu-ray drive for the Xbox 360." While Microsoft has since denied any HD discussions are happening with Sony, we remember that a few MS execs let it slip that this <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/01/10/blu-ray-and-xbox-360-its-possible-says-moore/">could</a> be an <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/09/xbox-360-still-open-to-blu-ray-add-on-should-hd-dvd-fail/">option</a> if Blu-ray won the "war," which <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/19/eulogy-for-the-officially-dead-hd-dvd-format/">it did</a>. One thing to keep in mind Xbox fanboys, this decision stems from wanting to offer <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/video-marketplace-weekly/">multiple avenues</a> to HD content to Xbox 360 users and doesn't mean we'll see that new SKU that slaps Master Chief's next outing on a BD disc. At least we think.<br /><br />[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/07/blu-ray-xbox-360-add-on-rumor-returns-from-the-dead/">Blu-ray Xbox 360 add-on rumor resurfaces</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 07 Mar 2008 13:30:00 EST. You will be missed HD DVD. That's a fact. You were strong and wise, but you were unable to gather support by the masses and as a result, you passed at a young age. This is it, the final curtain call. Goodbye HD DVD and goodbye to This Week in HD DVD. We promised we wouldn't cry ...

Attention, <a href="http://www.obsoletecomputermuseum.org/">people who collect obsolete technology</a> -- here's the perfect chance to, um, add some obsolete technology to your collection! While Microsoft recently announced they're <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/23/microsoft-officially-gives-up-on-hd-dvd/">no longer producing HD DVD add-on drives</a> for the Xbox 360, they are unloading their remaining supply at a bargain-basement price of $50, as a Microsoft spokesperson <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601101&amp;sid=aAANSKlSZKdo&amp;refer=japan">told Bloomberg</a>.<br /><br />Sure enough, online retailers from <a href="http://www.circuitcity.com/ccd/productDetail.do?oid=166160&amp;WT.mc_n=4&amp;WT.mc_t=U&amp;cm_ven=COMPARISON%20SHOPPING&amp;cm_cat=GOOGLE&amp;cm_pla=DATAFEED-%3EPRODUCTS&amp;cm_ite=1%20PRODUCT&amp;cm_keycode=4">Circuit City</a> to <a href="http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8132095&amp;type=product&amp;id=1158321865239&amp;ref=06&amp;loc=01&amp;ci_src=14110944&amp;ci_sku=8132095">Best Buy</a> to <a href="http://www.buy.com/prod/xbox-360-hd-dvd-player/q/loc/108/203249984.html">Buy.com</a> are listing the defunct accessory for 25 percent of it's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/09/27/360-hd-dvd-add-on-coming-to-us-europe-in-mid-november-for-200/2">original price</a>. At that price, the remaining stock could go fast. Then again, with the prospect of more HD-DVD discs looking <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/19/its-official-hd-dvd-has-officially-died-an-official-death/">less than good</a>, maybe $50 is still too expensive to unload.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/25/microsoft-unloading-remaining-hd-dvd-add-ons-for-50/">Microsoft unloading remaining HD DVD add-ons for $50</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 25 Feb 2008 16:45:00 EST. W00t! (Thanks, Cal)<br /><br /><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/22/rumor-360s-hd-dvd-player-to-drop-to-50/">Rumored</a> for a while now, it has just been <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601101&amp;sid=aB8GtLEpgNYQ&amp;refer=japan">unofficially confirmed</a> that the MSRP of the 360 HD-DVD add-on has been reduced from $130 to $50, cheaper even than a newly-released game. So far, <a href="http://www.kmart.com/shc/s/p_10151_10104_1630000000400048P?vName=Entertainment">K-mart</a> and <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-360-HD-DVD-Player/dp/B000JHO4L0">Amazon</a> have reduced their price (and Amazon offering free shipping). Microsoft has not yet updated <a href="http://www.xbox.com/en-US/hardware/x/xbox360hddvdplayer/"><em>their </em>price</a> so this is still unofficial, but even so, it's likely that other retailers will be following soon. With the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/24/microsoft-haults-production-on-hd-dvd-add-on/">production </a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/24/microsoft-haults-production-on-hd-dvd-add-on/">ending</a> on all HD-DVD<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/24/microsoft-haults-production-on-hd-dvd-add-on/"> players</a> everywhere, the HD-DVD add-on is now good only as some sort of obscure collectors item. Then again if you've got a <a href="http://www.kmart.com/shc/s/p_10151_10104_1630000000400048P?vName=Entertainment">President Grant</a> burning a hole in your pocket and you've got a hankerin' for some quick and easy HD movie action, this is a good short-term solution until all the cheap HD-DVDs dry up. Besides, if you're quick you could always get <a href="http://www.fatwallet.com/redirect/bounce.php?afsrc=1&amp;url=http://www.thelookandsoundofperfect.com/_pdf/perfect_hd_dvd_offer_redemption_form.pdf">these free ones</a>, and then not have to immediately buy any HD-DVDs at all. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/19/eulogy-for-the-officially-dead-hd-dvd-format/">Remember the losing format</a>, and look forward to digital distribution to (with luck and lots and lots of bandwidth) save us.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/25/confirmed-hd-dvd-add-on-reduced-to-50/">Retailers drop HD-DVD add-on to $50 [update]</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 25 Feb 2008 06:00:00 EST. After <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/15/wal-mart-goes-exclusively-blu-ray/">sidestepped inquires</a> to retailers and unanswered questions during the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/22/fancast-xtra-microsoft-gdc08-blogger-breakfast/">Blogger Breakfast</a>, <a href="http://gamerscoreblog.com/team/archive/2008/02/23/HDDVDSupport.aspx">Gamescore Blog</a> sends the word that Microsoft has officially ended production on the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/hd-dvd">HD DVD</a> add-on drive for the Xbox 360. Citing the recent decision from <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/19/eulogy-for-the-officially-dead-hd-dvd-format/">Toshiba</a> to shut the format down, Hollywood <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/04/warner-drops-hd-dvd-goes-blu-ray-only/">exodus</a> and various retailer <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/11/netflix-drops-hd-dvd-goes-blu-ray-exclusive/">announcements</a>, Microsoft is out of the HD DVD business. Current owners of the HD DVD drive, who haven't flooded eBay with their defunct format, will be happy to know that Microsoft will, "continue to provide standard product and warranty support for all Xbox 360 HD DVD Players in the market."<br /><br />With the announcement Microsoft took the opportunity to reiterate it's statement that this format <strike>massacre</strike> war has little impact on it's Xbox 360 business and reminds consumers that the HD DVD was just one of the various ways the Xbox 360 offered HD content, another being through the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/video-marketplace-weekly/">Xbox Live Video Marketplace</a>. On a side note anyone wondering what they can do with their HD DVD drive, this video <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-g15X6jTcPY">might help</a>.<br /><br />[Thanks, OSpazX]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/24/microsoft-haults-production-on-hd-dvd-add-on/">Microsoft halts production on HD DVD add-on</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 24 Feb 2008 00:30:00 EST. We're certain there are plenty of Really Important things that have to be considered before summarily tossing failed hardware peripherals out the boardroom window, en masse. What else have they been up to for the last 4 days since Toshiba <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/19/its-official-hd-dvd-has-officially-died-an-official-death/">officially announced</a> the format's death? No bother, because Microsoft's Gamerscore blog says, "Xbox will no longer manufacture new HD DVD players for the Xbox 360" though they "will continue to provide standard product and warranty support for all Xbox 360 HD DVD Players in the market." HD DVD eBay onslaught beginning ... now.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/23/microsoft-officially-gives-up-on-hd-dvd/">Microsoft officially gives up on HD DVD</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 23 Feb 2008 21:58:00 EST. Yup, $50. A drop of $80 from the recently announced price drop to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/05/xbox-360-hd-dvd-player-now-on-sale-for-129/">$129</a>. Ars Technica says that the new $50 price tag was to be revealed yesterday the 21st, but so far we haven't heard anything from Microsoft regarding any price cut. We also searched a few major online retailers for a magic $50 price tag, but were unsuccessful. We'll just have to wait and see what becomes of the 360's HD DVD player as we expect its price to drop significantly as it dies a slow, tortuous death. The same death that the entire <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/hd-dvd">HD DVD format</a> has been experiencing. During the conference a lot of numbers were dropped on the overall impact of the HD DVD format, but instead of just dolling out the info like we've been doing all week long we thought we would write a letter to our downed friend and tell him how we really felt.<br /><br />Dear HD DVD,<br />Hey, it's everyone here at X3F. So you had a <strike>good</strike> <strike>decent</strike> run in the high definition format war and it didn't go the way you hoped. Now, like all those ET cartridges buried in the desert, you've found a new home padding Nevada for some kind of future nuclear test. Take solace in the fact that you have around <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/02/19/hd-dvd-casualty-report-730-000-players-recorders-and-drives-l/">730,000 HD DVD players</a> worldwide taking up space in homes like an overweight passenger who has to buy two seats on a United flight. Our fans made up for 300,000 of those units by way of the Xbox 360 add-on and while we here at X3F tried to give you as many <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/this-week-in-hd-dvd/">shout-outs</a> as possible it just didn't look like you were getting on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/15/wal-mart-goes-blu-ray-exclusive/">anyone's</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/04/warner-drops-hd-dvd-goes-blu-ray-only/">good </a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/11/netflix-drops-hd-dvd-goes-blu-ray-exclusive/">side</a>.<br /><br />It's funny, this whole thing really has nothing to do with video games but we keep talking about you. Maybe it's because of the whole Xbox 360 add-on thing or maybe we're just trying to ignore the fact that a new optical format in the age of digital distribution makes about as much sense as controlling an escalator with a chicken-n-beef burrito. So will Toshiba start making Blu-ray players or begin work on a new format? They won't say. What we know for sure is that somewhere <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/06/michael-bay-says-ms-is-fixing-the-format-war/">Michael Bay</a> is licking the sweet tears off of an HD DVD owner's face while pumping a fist to the sky crying for the head of Mr. Bill Gates. Wow, that rhymed! We're poet's and we didn't even know it! Nice, two for two.<br /><br />With love,<br />X3F<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/19/eulogy-for-the-officially-dead-hd-dvd-format/">Eulogy for the officially dead HD DVD format</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 19 Feb 2008 11:30:00 EST. While the news was already technically broken on Saturday by NHK, Toshiba has today held a press conference to tell the world that HD-DVD is being dropped. Toshiba will no longer develop, manufacture or market HD-DVD, bringing the shipping of hardware to retailers to a gradual halt by the end of March. The format war ends today with the much-signposted victory for Blu-Ray. This is obviously great news for PS3 owners (as well as would-be PS3 owners who were sitting on the fence about Blu-Ray). <br /><br />We suspect we'll hear from Universal and Paramount before too long regarding their schedule for Blu-Ray releases. Finally we can expect to see films like <em>Serenity</em> and TV shows like <em>Heroes</em> on our favourite Hi-Def medium. Obviously, we'll keep you up to date with any announcements these studios make. The "war" is finally, officially, over. How does that make you feel?<br /><br />[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/19/toshiba-officially-bows-out-of-next-gen-format-war/">Toshiba officially bows out of next-gen format war</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 19 Feb 2008 10:00:00 EST. Reports are coming in from Australia's <a href="http://www.smarthouse.com.au/Gaming/Console/J7L7H2R4">Smarthouse</a> citing "insiders at Microsoft in the USA," claiming that a Blu-ray add-on is already well in development and could be ready to launch in as little as three months.<br /><br />Microsoft has yet to comment on the validity of the report but according to a story on <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/02/18/microsoft-holding-off-on-hd-dvd-reaction-thinks-games-sell-co/">Engadget</a> they've said, "we will wait until we hear from Toshiba before announcing any specific plans around the Xbox 360 HD DVD player." Since Microsoft has little to do with this format war it wouldn't be surprising to see a Blu-ray add-on in the mix sometime in the future, they've even said <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/01/10/blu-ray-and-xbox-360-its-possible-says-moore/">it could</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/05/microsoft-hd-dvd-might-be-next-betamax-switch-to-blu-ray-sti/">happen</a> a few times <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/09/xbox-360-still-open-to-blu-ray-add-on-should-hd-dvd-fail/">already</a>.<br /><br />[via <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/18/rumor-xbox-360-blu-ray-player-could-be-out-by-may/">Joystiq</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/18/rumor-xbox-360-blu-ray-add-on-by-may/">Rumor: Xbox 360 Blu-ray add-on by May</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 18 Feb 2008 13:30:00 EST. Just two days after Blu-ray apparently <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/16/toshiba-pulls-hd-dvd-support-blu-ray-wins/">won the HD video battle</a>, Microsoft has chimed in on the eulogizing. Unsurprisingly, the company doesn't view being on the losing side of the fight as particularly damaging to their platform, saying, "We do not believe the recent reports about HD DVD will have any material impact on the Xbox 360 platform or our position in the marketplace. As we've long stated, we believe it is games that sell consoles and Xbox 360 continues to have the largest next-gen games library with the most exclusives and best selling games in the industry." <br /><br />The statement was silent on any other plans for the console's external HD DVD player, saying "We will wait until we hear from Toshiba before announcing any specific plans." So no, they're not ruling out <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/18/rumor-xbox-360-blu-ray-player-could-be-out-by-may/">an external Blu-ray</a> player at the moment ... but don't expect them to interrupt the funeral to talk about it.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/18/microsoft-on-hd-dvd-no-announcements-right-now/">Microsoft on HD DVD: No announcements right now</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 18 Feb 2008 11:45:00 EST. Retailers have been <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/15/wal-mart-goes-blu-ray-exclusive/">dropping support</a> left and right, wild <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/16/stick-a-fork-in-hd-dvd-its-done/">speculation</a> has been running rampant across the internets and <a href="http://www.engadgethd.com/2008/02/15/hd-dvd-deathwatch-were-making-it-official/">Engadget</a> even put HD DVD on their "death watch" list. Ouch. Rumors have even been swirling that Toshiba will be <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/15/rumor-toshiba-gearing-up-to-drop-hd-dvd/">announcing</a> the death of HD DVD as early as sometime this week. But we're guessing Toshiba isn't ready to pull the plug yet as earlier this morning they put out a <a href="http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=33204">statement</a> regarding that rumor saying that "the media reported that Toshiba will discontinue its HD DVD business" but "Toshiba has not made any announcement concerning this." They go on to say that "although Toshiba is currently assessing its business strategies, no decision has been made at this moment." Toshiba also confirmed that Toshiba likes to refer to itself in third person.<br /><br />So, there you have it. Toshiba isn't throwing in the towel just yet or they simply aren't ready to announce that they will be throwing in the towel. Well, now that the Microsoft-supported format seems just <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/16/toshiba-pulls-hd-dvd-support-blu-ray-wins/">one step away from dead</a>, we're hearing rumblings of just how possible that Blu-ray player possibility is.<br /><br />Citing "insiders at Microsoft in the USA," Australia's <a href="http://www.smarthouse.com.au/Gaming/Console/J7L7H2R4">Smarthouse</a> says Microsoft's Blu-ray add-on is already fully designed, and could be on the market within three months, "<span class="verdana13px">subject to internal marketing and sales approvals." Smarthouse also repeated the rumors of a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/19/rumorang-built-in-hd-dvd-drive-for-xbox-360/">built-in high-def drive</a> for the system, although now that rumored drive plays Blu-ray discs instead of an HD DVDs. Regardless, the tech site seems to think Microsoft will focus on digital movie downloads for those who don't want an add-on.<br /><br />As for Sony, they couldn't be happier that Microsoft is considering jumping over to the "winning" side of this HD disc battle. "We would welcome Microsoft to the Blu-ray stable," SCE Managing Director </span><span class="verdana13px">Michael Ephraim told Smarthouse</span><span class="verdana13px">. "In fact it is quite logical for them as the PS3 has been very successful in driving consumers to Blu-ray. In fact we believe that it has done more to win the format war than traditional Blu-ray player." Hey, they just won a format war ... they can afford to be a little smug.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.megatonik.com/2008/02/17/rumor-microsoft-has-been-developing-a-blu-ray-add-on-to-launch-by-may-08/">Megatonik</a>]<br /></span><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/18/rumor-xbox-360-blu-ray-player-could-be-out-by-may/">Rumor: Xbox 360 Blu-ray player could be out by May</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 18 Feb 2008 09:45:00 EST. The shutdown will reportedly cost Toshiba hundreds of millions of dollars.</font>
<p> </p>
<p><font size="2">The death spiral of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/hd-dvd">HD DVD</a> seemed to have been kick started in June 2007, when the corporate rental giant Blockbuster said they would only carry Blu-ray within it's retail locations. Then in early January 2008, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/04/warner-drops-hd-dvd-goes-blu-ray-only/">Warner Bros.</a> confirmed they would drop HD DVD in favor of the Sony backed - but not owned - Blu-ray format. Earlier this week HD DVD was knocked to the ground and repeatedly kicked as <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/11/netflix-drops-hd-dvd-goes-blu-ray-exclusive/">Netflix</a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/15/wal-mart-goes-blu-ray-exclusive/">Wal-Mart</a> chose to support Blu in this completely <strike>ridiculous</strike> interesting <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/format-war">format war</a>.</font></p>

Japanese news source <a href="http://www3.nhk.or.jp/news/2008/02/16/d20080216000104.html">NHK</a> (<a href="http://www.nhk.or.jp/daily/english/dailynews1.html">english translation</a> and <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/technologyNews/idUSL1637974620080216">Reuters validation</a>) is reporting that Toshiba is planning to drop support of HD DVD, striking a final blow to the format and conceding victory to Blu-ray. The Sony-backed high-definition disc has been gaining strides for some time, most notably after <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/04/warner-bros-goes-blu-ray-exclusive/">Warner Bros</a> switched to Blu-ray exclusively. Toshiba is expected to face hundreds of millions of dollars in losses.<br /> <br /> The so-called "format wars" seems to be at an end, and now we're left to ponder about the future, such as how big is the office party Sony is throwing in honor of its victory? This is (hopefully) going to be the <em>last</em> HD DVD/Blu-ray news you'll ever read (we're saving one post for when Microsoft joins the Blu-ray camp). After the obvious death bells were ringing, Toshiba has finally called it quits. Although HD DVD players will still be sold in stores for now, Toshiba will abandon all new production of players. Most likely, they will be quick to create a Blu-ray player of their own.<br /><br />According to <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/companyNewsAndPR/idUSL1627196120080216">Reuters</a>, "Toshiba is expected to suffer losses amounting to tens of billions of yen (hundreds of millions of dollars) to scrap production of HD DVD players and recorders and other steps to exit the business."<br /><br />That's what happens in a high-risk all-or-nothing format war. Sony must feel pretty good right about now, especially after historic defeats with Betamax, ATRAC, UMD, and more. Blu-ray in PS3 was a risky gamble: it created a price point that many mocked, and generated a good amount of negative publicity for the Japanese electronics giant. However, it was also the Trojan Horse that allowed it to gain such a large percentage of the HD-aware mindset. With this victory, it appears that Sony's plans are finally coming together.<br /><br />[Thanks, Jason B.!]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/16/its-really-over-folks-toshiba-drops-hd-dvd/">It's really over, folks - Toshiba drops HD DVD</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 16 Feb 2008 12:05:00 EST. In a move that shocked no one, Wal-Mart has announced that they are exclusively backing Blu-Ray in the next generation optical disc war according to <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/technologyNews/idUSWEN397220080215?feedType=nl&amp;feedName=ustechnology">Reuters</a>. Wal-Mart <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/technologyNews/idUSWEN397220080215?feedType=nl&amp;feedName=ustechnology">declared</a> today that it will "exclusively" back Blu-ray in the high-definition movie format war. We know there's a lot of emotions about this issue still out there, but when <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/11/netflix-best-buy-boosting-blu-ray/">Netflix</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/18/blockbuster-stores-boast-for-blu-ray/">Blockbuster</a>, Best Buy, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/13/dont-even-trip-financial-times-paramount-is-sticking-with-h/">almost all</a> of the major movie studios and <em>WAL-MART</em> go Blu-ray, can we finally say this is the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/15/rumor-toshiba-set-to-kill-off-hd-dvd-format/">end for HD DVD</a>? Wal-Mart stated that "in less than 30 days" customers will see the alpha-dog of retailers go predominantly Blu-ray. <br /><br />Wal-Mart's release to Joystiq also states that the company is moving "exclusively toward Blu-ray ... players." We've requested clarification as to whether this means they will no longer carry the Xbox 360 HD DVD add-on player. We'll update when we get a response. What we can say is that the 10 Wal-Mart stores we did call either had no idea there was an HD DVD add-on for the Xbox 360 or said they haven't had them for a while.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/15/wal-mart-goes-exclusively-blu-ray/">Wal-Mart goes 'exclusively' Blu-ray</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 15 Feb 2008 20:30:00 EST. Citing unnamed industry sources, <a href="http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/content_display/news/e3ib77125d96b22e86027d0bfb0c25aa58d">The Hollywood Reporter</a> says they've been told the dying format will be buried in the next coming weeks. Jodi Sally, vp of marketing for Toshiba America Consumer Products insists that nothing has been confirmed for the future of HD DVD saying, "based on its technological advancements, we continue to believe HD DVD is the best format for consumers, given the value and consistent quality inherent in our player offerings."<br /><br />While nothing has been set in stone for the format Sally did offer a hint that Toshiba is considering the exodus of the HD format. "Given the market developments in the past month," she said, "Toshiba will continue to study the market impact and the value proposition for consumers, particularly in light of our recent price reductions on all HD DVD players."<br /><br />After the recent announcements of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/04/warner-drops-hd-dvd-goes-blu-ray-only/">studios</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/11/netflix-best-buy-boosting-blu-ray/">retailers</a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/11/netflix-drops-hd-dvd-goes-blu-ray-exclusive/">rental companies</a> ditching the format is anyone really surprised that HD DVD will go the way of the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Betamax">Betamax</a>?<br /><br />[via <a href="http://www.engadgethd.com/2008/02/14/toshiba-gearing-up-to-drop-hd-dvd/">Engadget</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/15/rumor-toshiba-gearing-up-to-drop-hd-dvd/">Rumor: Toshiba gearing up to drop HD DVD</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 15 Feb 2008 15:00:00 EST. Citing "reliable industry sources," the entertainment newspaper predicts Toshiba will officially stop supporting the high-definition movie format "sometime in the coming weeks."<br /><br />If true, the move would somewhat validate Sony's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2005/09/05/ps3s-blu-ray-drive-to-cost-sony-100-a-unit/">costly</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/08/29/sony-having-trouble-with-blu-ray-laser-production/">decision</a> to integrate Blu-ray technology into the PS3, and would give Sony a rather large stake in the future of the lucrative HD home movie market. While the death of HD DVD would obviously be a blow to Microsoft's external HD DVD drive (and everyone who bought it), Microsoft has said <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/05/microsoft-hd-dvd-might-be-next-betamax-switch-to-blu-ray-sti/">again</a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/09/xbox-360-still-open-to-blu-ray-add-on-should-hd-dvd-fail/">again</a> they are open to the idea of a Blu-ray attachment if and when that format wins out. HD DVD is officially against the ropes and is getting battered by wicked left and right hooks to the noggin by <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/category/blu-ray/">Blu-ray</a>. But unlike a punch drunk boxer giving it one last shot at the win, it appears that the HD DVD camp is slowly coming to grips with its grim future.<br /><br />The camp responded to earlier reports that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/11/netflix-goes-blu-ray-exclusive/">Netflix would only carry Blu-ray titles</a> as well as <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/11/best-buy-backing-blu-ray-beginning-march/">Best Buy recommending Blu-ray as the HD standard</a>. "We have long held the belief that HD DVD is the best format for consumers based on quality and value, and with more than 1 million HD DVD players on the market, it's unfortunate to see Netflix make the decision to only stock Blu-ray titles going forward," the statement read. "While the Best Buy announcement says they will recommend Blu-ray, at least they will continue to carry HD DVD and offer consumers a choice at retail."<br /><br />Sure, they're not exactly admitting defeat yet, but it's almost sad to see the HD DVD camp attempting to find a silver lining in the fact that Best Buy is still carrying its discs despite promoting its competitor as the superior product. With overwhelming industry support leaning in Blu-ray's favor, it appears the only thing Sony needs to declare full victory is the support of Universal and Paramount. However, we believe it's only a matter of time before they're "seeing Blu."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/12/hd-dvd-camp-responds-to-blu-ray-progress/">HD DVD camp responds to Blu-ray progress</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 12 Feb 2008 11:00:00 EST. Good evening internet faithful, <a href="http://www.cwtv.com/shows/gossip-girl">Gossip Girl</a> here, your only source into the scandalous lives of today's hottest format war. Top story on my home page? Turns out <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/technologyNews/idUSWEN388420080211">Reuter</a>'s saw <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/technologyNews/idUSWEN388420080211">Netflix proposing to Blu-ray today</a>. Too bad for HD DVD, which was also on Netflix's play-list until today when it sent out an email explaining that the two were splitsville from here on in. Not only that, but Netflix cooed that by the end of the year all HD DVDs "will be changed to standard definition DVDs" on subscriber's queues. Meaning Netflix isn't just kicking HD DVD out, but burning all the memories in the bathtub too.<br /><br />Netflix isn't the only company amorous about Blu-ray today. Best Buy also sent hugs and kisses in the form of an announcement that it would "<a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/technologyNews/idUSWNAS040320080211?feedType=nl&amp;feedName=ustechnology">recommend</a>" Blu-ray from now on. Although the retail chain isn't choosing a definitive side just yet, Best Buy will "prominently feature Blu-ray hardware and software beginning in March."<br /><br />There's nothing Gossip Girl likes more than a good cat fight, but sadly this one is looking almost done. With HD DVD taking <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/05/hd-dvd-group-cancels-pre-ces-press-conference/">hit</a> after <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/09/xbox-360-still-open-to-blu-ray-add-on-should-hd-dvd-fail/">hit,</a> not to mention the recent <strike>clearance</strike> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/06/xbox-360-hd-dvd-player-price-dropped-to-130/">price-drop of the Xbox HD DVD player</a>, it's getting tough to imagine dear sweet HD DVD can stage a comeback. Blu-ray is working its magic and those with the power to decide the format war are following.<br /><br /><strong>Update:</strong> Peep this sorry response from the HD DVD camp: "<em>We have long held the belief that HD DVD is the best format for consumers based on quality and value, and with more than 1 million HD DVD players on the market, it's unfortunate to see Netflix make the decision to only stock Blu-ray titles going forward. While the Best Buy announcement says they will recommend Blu-ray, at least they will continue to carry HD DVD and offer consumers a choice at retail.</em>" [Via <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/02/12/hd-dvd-camp-issues-sad-little-response-to-netflix-best-buy-snub/" target="_blank">Engadget</a>]<br /><br /><a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/technologyNews/idUSWEN388420080211">Read</a>: Netflix chooses Blu-ray.<br /><a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/technologyNews/idUSWNAS040320080211?feedType=nl&amp;feedName=ustechnology">Read</a>: Best Buy to recommend Blu-ray.<br /><br />[Thanks to all who sent us their Netflix letters!]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/11/netflix-best-buy-boosting-blu-ray/">Netflix, Best Buy boosting Blu-ray; HD DVD responds [update]</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 11 Feb 2008 23:25:00 EST. So, in an effort to raise our spirits, we invited any upcoming HD DVD to join our new release party, laugh a bit, share a few stories and drink our sorrows away. But our plan backfired. Only two new HD DVDs RSVP'ed for this week's party leaving us to question where our HD DVD supporters have gone. Then we noticed that one of this week's new releases is none other than the girls from <em>Girls Gone Wild</em> and in full HD. But we soon realized that they were a yawn fest and had zero substance (we aren't that shallow), so now our plan is to go into hibernation until next week. Maybe then we'll be treated to a surprise HD DVD release party with some 30 attendees. A man can dream.

According to the story, Netflix justifies their decision on the majority of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/04/warner-drops-hd-dvd-goes-blu-ray-only/">Hollywood studios</a> taking sides behind the Sony-backed format.<br /><br />Netflix will continue to offer <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/hd-dvd">HD DVD</a> rentals until their current stock is phased out within the next year but with this news the chances of stocking new titles are slim to none. In the meantime, HD DVD owners can still get their fix from <a href="http://www.blockbuster.com/browse/collections/hdDvdPackage">BlockBuster Online</a> but it seems it's only a matter of time until that changes.<br /><br />[Thanks, Bravo6]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/11/netflix-drops-hd-dvd-goes-blu-ray-exclusive/">Netflix drops HD DVD, goes Blu-Ray exclusive</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 11 Feb 2008 14:45:00 EST. Blu-ray over the past few months has gained the exclusive support of a majority of major Hollywood studios, such as Disney and Warner Bros. The embattled HD DVD format is essentially "dead," and Netflix agrees. According to a report by <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/rbssConsumerGoodsAndRetailNews/idUSWEN388420080211">Reuters</a>, "Netflix said that with such a clear signal from the industry, it will only buy Blu-ray discs going forward and will phase out stock of HD DVD by about the end of the year."<br /><br />As our friends at <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/02/11/netflix-picks-blu-ray-good-luck-renting-an-hd-dvd-soon/">Engadget</a> said, "good luck renting an HD DVD." With both Netflix and Blockbuster removing HD DVD from their shelves, it's clear that Sony's movie format has won the war.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/11/netflix-goes-blu-ray-exclusive/">Netflix goes Blu-ray exclusive</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 11 Feb 2008 09:55:00 EST. Effective immediately, the Xbox 360 HD DVD player add-on is now <a href="http://gamerscoreblog.com/team/archive/2008/02/06/557248.aspx">priced at $130</a> in the US and Canada. Even better, early birds managed to nab the player for <a target="_blank" href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/02/06/amazon-80-xbox-360-hd-dvd-player-with-6-free-hd-dvds-and-shipp/">a steal</a> this morning on Amazon (though the $80 offer is now sold out). Depending on your perspective, today's price-drop either signals that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/hddvd/">HD DVD</a> isn't about to go down easy or that it's grasping at building a user base amidst <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/04/warner-bros-goes-blu-ray-exclusive/">major setbacks</a>.<br /><br />For the last half year <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/blu-ray">Blu-ray</a> has had some high-profile victories. Now, we're not choosing sides, just saying that those who haven't pledged their allegiance to an HD movie format may want to wait a little longer (but Blu-ray is totally the winner, right?).<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/06/xbox-360-hd-dvd-player-price-dropped-to-130/">Xbox 360 HD DVD player price dropped to $130</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 06 Feb 2008 13:23:00 EST.
