In-game, a screen prompts players to "play the game in High Definition mode" for split-screen multiplayer.

Notch wasn't aware that local multiplayer wouldn't work with standard-definition TVs, he tweeted and apologized to a fan today.

Port developer 4J Studios has justified the HD requirement on Twitter: "The inventory and crafting just didn't work in splitscreen Standard Definition - it was too small to make out."

Some fans want a refund from Microsoft, saying they wouldn't have bought Minecraft if the HD requirement was clearer, but Microsoft is holding out on a few of them, Kotaku reports.
Surprise: XBLA Minecraft's split-screen multiplayer requires HDTV originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 10 May 2012 15:30:00 EST. And only ten years after the system's contemporary, the Dreamcast, was packed into a Fuji TV.

The budget-focused (okay, maybe it's not all that Sony-like) Bravia KDL-22PX300 includes 720p output, four HDMI ports ... and a PS2. We bet you can't guess where the PS2 hardware is in that sleek, sleek design. The set's currently available in the UK for £199.95 (about $312).
New Bravia TV includes PS2 hardware originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 03 Dec 2010 10:07:00 EST. Roundtable Concepts is introducing a line of LED televisions featuring Super Street Fighter IV logos and imagery on the casing -- as well as a "Street Fighter image" that will "appear on the screen for 8 seconds when you power it on." This is absolutely the TV for people who love Street Fighter to the exclusion of all else, including money and common sense.

The TVs will be available "in the upcoming weeks" in 32", 40", 42", and 46" sizes, for as-yet unannounced prices. The company also produces Marvel-branded TVs, as well as TVs bearing college logos.
Microsoft's VP of Interactive Entertainment Business in Europe, Chris Lewis, tells GI.biz that the removal of the HDMI cable from the Elite packaging was to enable more "flexibility to consumers who can then decide which type of cable they want for their specific gaming and TV screen set-up." Pardon us, but that's like saying Sub-Zero ripping out your spine gives your body more "flexibility." Of course, the drawback is that you're dead.

Adding insult to injury, the new Elite bundle isn't just shipping sans HDMI cable, it has no HD cables at all; meaning that consumers now have even more flexibility to purchase better cables. While any old HDMI cable will do (they're cheap too!), the Xbox 360 component cable is proprietary and priced at $40 (as is the VGA cable). Want optical audio with your HDMI? That adapter's proprietary, too -- and $50. In fairness, PS3s don't ship with HD cables either (they do have an optical audio port, though), and that's always been a joke -- a joke that Microsoft is now in on.

Gallery: Xbox 360 Elite / Arcade Bundles (August 2009)

Microsoft: Dropping HDMI cable gives Xbox 360 consumers 'flexibility' originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 27 Aug 2009 12:03:00 EST. Normally when Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter whips out his crystal ball and starts getting the vapors, he doesn't have time to turn on his minirecorder and take down the futurespeak channeled through his body. Luckily for us (and you!), he not only recorded it this time, but also wrote it down in the form of the 2009 Interactive Industry Report! We delved through the beast of a document this afternoon and found an interesting segment regarding the Nintendo Wii relying on "slower adoption rates of current generation technology" (read as: high-def displays) to help boost sales.

Pachter writes on page nine of the report, "The global recession served to benefit Nintendo at its competitors' expense," referencing Microsoft and Sony as having slower console sales this generation due to HDTV functionality built into the systems. He argues that consumers who might purchase the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 are more likely to buy the Wii not only because of the lower price point, but because of the subsequent HDTV purchase price. "Expect most consumers to defer purchasing a PS3 or an Xbox 360 until they have purchased an HD monitor," Pachter explains. Though we're not convinced that the same folks who would be purchasing an Xbox 360 or a PS3 would be running out to buy a Nintendo Wii in every case, we digress. What say you, Joystiq Biomass?
Pachter: Nintendo is benefiting from global recession side effects originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 01 Jul 2009 04:00:00 EST. HDTV processing lag isn't really the sexiest gaming thing to talk about, but fans of Rock Band and Guitar Hero may have felt and dealt with its cold, uncaring cruelty. Hypercombofinish has a really great, basic piece on the issue and provides some tips on how to avoid the lag. Engineers can keep on walking past the piece, but for those of us who've wondered why we have to calibrate for music titles on new televisions, it's an interesting little read.

Some basic tips the article suggests to combat lag: Make sure games are playing at the native resolution, turn on the "game mode" if the TV has one and turn off any additional video processing options on the TV if possible. Of course, if you want to avoid all this drama, you can always use an SDTV -- we hear those are coming back like vinyl records.
How to fight HDTV image lag originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 08 May 2009 01:00:00 EST. While other streaming services exist in the current console market, Qtv will begin testing the service in the U.S. using the PlayStation 2 as its base platform, with plans to move to newer consoles at a later time.

Included in the Qtv package is access to YouTube and other streaming video services, as well as Internet radio. The Qtv media player will also allow users to grab and share content -- such as pictures, music and videos of various formats (DivX, h.264, XviD and more) -- from other compatible devices. With the service set to launch later this year, Qtv plans to turn PS2 users into HDTV set-top owners for "less than $50." An interesting proposition ... if we could remember which of our younger relatives we gave our system to.

[Via Engadget]
Qtv launching IPTV service on ... Right now the store is offering both a 720p Samsung 42" plasma HDTV and an Xbox 360 for $899.98. If you'd prefer an LCD screen, is offering the same deal for an Xbox 360 and a Samsung 720p 37" LCD HDTV, which also runs $899. The plasma and LCD TVs typically run for $1,300 and $1,200, respectively, so the offer translates to a free Xbox 360 Pro either way (with an extra $100 off the plasma TV to boot). The Xbox 360 is part of the new holiday bundle, so you'll score free copies of LEGO Indiana Jones and Kung Fu Panda too.

Granted, you'll have to give up your 1080p dreams, but it's still a mighty impressive deal.

[Via Punch Jump]
Best Buy: Xbox 360 Pro and 42" HDTV for $899 originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 16 Dec 2008 17:15:00 EST. For those of us with HD displays, the revelation that the Netflix component of Xbox 360's New Xbox Experience would stream HD video via the intertubes was just spiffy. Then came various reports that said feature would only be available in situations where the 360 was connected to an HDCP-compliant display via HDMI. Even then, the scuttlebutt was that older 360s might not be up to snuff. Not true, as our pals at Engadget have found.

They've tested a 360 connected via component cables and confirmed that it displays the Netflix HD content just fine, as you can see in the above photo. It should be noted that those with older HD sets, which only have DVI inputs, may encounter problems using HDMI-to-DVI converters, since the 360 can't make the necessary HDCP "handshake" in that configuration. As Engadget points out, it's still possible to use the 360's optional VGA output in this case. For most HD display owners, though, insert a big sigh of relief here.
Don't panic: NXE will stream Netflix HD via component cables originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 30 Oct 2008 16:16:00 EST. The upcoming refresh of Xbox 360's user interface is mighty bold ... but what if you have a real soft spot for the oh-so-passé assortment of blades? Ambiguous news! Xbox Live general manager Marc Whitten passes along word - via Major Nelson's blog - that the new Xbox "guide" will retain the blades-based interface, although it's still a little confusing as to exactly how.

In his update, Whitten says: "For everyone who loves the blades interface, it's not going away," and that "every feature and option [the blades offer] is available right from the guide." Confused? You're not alone. It sounds to us like a sort of "classic view" will be offered ... but, at the same time, like the guide will simply offer the same features. We took a vote and came up 50/50 on it. We'll be sure to press Microsoft for more details as E3 plays out.

[Update: Microsoft has demo'd the revised blade functionality to the media. Pressing the Xbox Guide button now brings up a more compact version of the blade-based "dashboard," rather than the traditional single pop-out Guide blade.]
Xbox 360 guide to offer blades, no solid explanation of how originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 14 Jul 2008 20:45:00 EST. Playing the game based on Terminator and Titanic director James Cameron's next big thing, Avatar, in full 3D sure sounded like a neat idea. After all, the movie itself is being shot to take advantage of the growing number of digital 3D cinemas popping up across the globe. Leave it to Ubisoft prez Yves Guillemot to get us all un-jazzed by revealing to GamesIndustry.biz that the game will only be playable in 3D on certain HDTVs.

According to Guillemot, the technology used to 3D-ify Ubi's Avatar game has been designed only for "a specific TV" and glasses that work with it. He goes on to say that the display is already available in the US. Could these TVs and these glasses be what he's referring to?

So ... no new TV, no Avatar 3D. Bummer. Though Guillemot has confirmed that the game will be playable in one less "D" on that nice, big old style HDTV you just spent your economic stimulus check on.
Ubisoft's Avatar game: '3D' mode optional, requires 'special' TV originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 03 Jun 2008 20:25:00 EST. A new study by Frank N. Magid Associates shows that 18% of HDTV purchasers in the last year bought one because of their Xbox 360 or PS3. GameDaily reports the study found that 5.5 million households purchased an HDTV for the first time in the last year and that 25% of households now have at least one HDTV set in the home.

Sony could come out a big winner if this trend continues, with the high-def movie format war locked up and the only console with HD movie playback built-in. Then again, we can only imagine the continuing Nintendo profit madness if there ever ended up being a Wii: Blu-ray edition.
Study: 18% of consumers bought HDTV for console use originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 24 Apr 2008 21:55:00 EST. We've heard many a tale about people flinging their Wiimotes into expensive HDTVs. Despite Nintendo's precautions, some folks still manage to let their controllers fly. Because of this, Panasonic has decided to release <strike>idiot-proof</strike> Wii-proof plasmas, with panels that protect the screen by resisting up to four joules of energy.

We can't imagine there being a huge market of people wanting this model, with the exception of the truly paranoid. Even so, Crave writes that it won't take too much effort for Panasonic to beef-up certain plasma screens, since they're generally more durable than LCD panels.

Sure, a stronger screen might be useful for other reasons (not all of us have kids, and for all we know, they like to throw stuff at TVs for fun). If you're considering this purchase for Wii purposes, though, might we suggest you simply use protection?

[Via Destructoid]
Panasonic to protect plasmas from flying Wiimotes originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 18 Feb 2008 21:00:00 EST.
Every (other) Tuesday, Mike Sylvester brings you REVOLUTIONARY, a look at the wide world of Wii possibilities.

It is the year 2008 and we've all got jet packs to carry us from our front door to the flying car in our driveway. Our friends can leave us telepathic thoughtmails when we're summering in seclusion on the dark side of the moon. Skynet fought back and the treacherous Decepticons have conquered the Autobots' home planet of Cybertron. Everyone is basking in the realer-than-reality goodness of their HD television sets. Wait a minute ... scratch that last bit. Not everyone's got an HDTV or even a DTV, so that broadcast switchover to digital transmission that the FCC mandated for the years leading up to 2007 wound up getting postponed until 2009.

Nintendo engineers are patting themselves on the back (no doubt with fat stacks of cash) for predicting the relatively slow transition to HD, which allowed them to keep production costs down on the little white wonder. It's a point of contention to some, but seniors, girlfriends, your parents, and most Wii fanboys aren't giving it a lot of thought. Many people aren't even aware that it's not an HD console, so this edition of Revolutionary is intended to clear up any misunderstandings about the Wii's resolution ... -ary.

Continue reading Revolutionary: New Year's Res

Revolutionary: New Year's Res originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 02 Jan 2008 11:15:00 EST. Deals like these are always less attractive when plastic gets involved, but we're of the mind that if you're going to drop a few Benjamins on a new TV, then a free PS3 is a welcome bargain. Gamers with HDTVs are often aspect ratio nerds. And a few Halo 3 co-op HDTV players have begun complaining about wasted space in the left and right margins of 16:9 (A.K.A. 1.77:1) screens. The issue is about dividing screen space in single-console games with less than four players. As-is, Halo 3 leaves black margins on the sides of the screen.

Every Tuesday, Mike Sylvester brings you REVOLUTIONARY, a look at the wide world of Wii possibilities.

It may be time for Nintendo to concede that we've entered the HD-era. Anyone looking to buy a new television will have an increasingly difficult time finding a "classic" SD tube amongst the pristine plasmas, elegant LCoS, lavish LCDs, dazzling DLPs, and (soon-to-come) sexy SEDs. And the technologies behind today's televisions are benefiting greatly from economies of scale, making it easier for consumers to consider going big on their next TV purchase.

For too long, big screen gaming had been confined to dollar-munching arcade machines and reruns of Silver Spoons, but more and more people are finding out what it feels like to have a truly super Mario kicking gargantuan goombas across the Mushroom Kingdom. If you haven't yet been bitten by the big bug, today I'll make you feel the itch.

Continue reading Revolutionary: Super Size Mii

Revolutionary: Super Size Mii originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 04 Sep 2007 13:00:00 EST. The first purchase of an HDTV can be stressful, especially factoring in the plethora of options, specifications, screen sizes, manufacturers and types of HDTV technology. Knowing which HDTV is best suited for gaming and the Blu-ray experience can be daunting so we're absolutely delighted to see assistance and suggestions on HDTV selection. CNET's latest recommendations came out about a week ago but it's a great read. They appear to favor LCD technology, with two recommended sets from Samsung and one from Sharp. Looking for the perfect gift for the man who has everything, but still wants the world to know that he's a clumsy bastard? Allow us to introduce the Wii shield, a big, dumb piece of plastic that protects LCDs from 30" to 46" from flying Wiimotes. In the market for an HDTV? How about making it a Samsung and getting a free PS3 system alongside your new HDTV? While supplies last, popular online retailer Newegg wants to give away a free PS3 system with each purchase of an LCD Samsung 46" 1080p television. The Samsung model seems to be well reviewed by those very same people who purchased the unit, and what better way to watch your Blu-Ray movies than with a brand new "full HD" 1080p television? This is the first PAL region game I've bought, but knowing that the PS3 is region free I wasn't worried about compatibility issues. When I got back and put the disc in the drive, I was met by a very disappointing message: "This game not supported (80028F10)". Confused, and a bit pissed off, I did some Googling and stumbled on a very helpful thread on the official European PLAYSTATION forum.

It turns out that there's an issue with US/JAP PS3s running 576 lines of resolution (the European standard). That is, they can't do it. So European games that don't support 480i/p simply won't play. The only solution is to step up to the lowest common resolution for all regions, 720i/p. Of course, for that you'll need a HDTV and a high definition connector for your console. As a result, FEAR is fast becoming the most expensive game I've ever bought.

It's difficult to say whether this will affect people who are planning on nabbing themselves some US games for their PAL PS3s. If you have any anecdotal evidence showing that this works fine, then let us know. As for the Americans out there who are looking forward to importing Singstar next month, you'll probably suffer from this same problem if you've yet to take the plunge and gone HD.
Region free in Europe? Timing is paramount if you want to dodge punches and have your own jabs connect, but the HDTV response lag that sometimes occurs has a habit of knocking Little Mac's bloodied face onto the canvas, leaving him too dazed to even focus his eyes on the mouthguard dropped inches away.

Gamers with SDTV's haven't been experiencing any lag between their controllers and the onscreen fight, and explanations for the decreased response time lean towards blaming the televisions, so Nintendo doesn't seem to be at fault this time. We appreciate Nintendo's decision not to try to improve on the resolution or anything, since we see the VC as a form of preservation.

It is especially maddening, then, to hear that VC games default to widescreen when played on HDTV's. This seems to fly in the face of what the VC is about. We're sure some of you are HDTV owners, and we want to know: does this bother you as much in practice as it bothers us in theory (no HDTV here)? Or have you gotten used to switching the aspect ratio every time you want to play Vigilante? Or ... are you playing in a non-archival resolution? Don't tell us if you are. Of those million, the first hundred gamers at Sony's launch event in London, were treated to a huge surprise: a free 46" HDTV, and a free taxi ride home. (Having these blokes murdered at launch for the free swag would undeniably be a PR nightmare!) BBC reports that the televisions were worth an impressive total of £250,000. 17-year-old Ritatsu Thomas was at the front of the line, and he was unsurprisingly grateful: "I feel fantastic. A market research company specializing in flat panel displays -- creatively named DisplaySearch -- forecasts that prices for LCD HDTVs could drop as much as 40% in 2007. As more people adopt LCD TVs and parts become cheaper, 32" LCDs could possibly be had for as little as $400 (currently, they run anywhere from $700 to $900). 37" sets could drop to $799 and 42" sets might fall as low as $999 (currently, both 37" and 42" sets can run well over $1000). We've been waiting to upgrade our HD setup for a while now, and frankly, a $400 32" HDTV would be too good to pass up. Let's hope these prices fall sooner rather than later.

Has anyone out there found any killer deals on HDTVs lately?
LCD TVs to see drastic price drop in 2007 originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 19 Dec 2006 13:30:00 EST. According to the article, many HDTV buyers are "perfectly content using their HD set simply for DVD and video game playback."

Why aren't many people watching TV on their HDTVs? Confusion about subscription models and network support is partly to blame -- 40 percent of survey respondents could only name one HD-capable TV network. This is in stark contrast to console makers who are taking pains to tout the superiority of their box's high-def capabilities.

Despite the lack of interest in high-def TV programming, 46 percent of respondents who are planning on buying a TV in the next year reported being at least "somewhat likely" to go the HD route. Which is to say it looks like HD adoption is finally poised to take off. Maybe someone should tell Nintendo.
HDTV buyers want games, movies, not TV shows originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 29 Nov 2006 15:05:00 EST. Those Wii component cables that showed up on Nintendo's official online store have completely sold out. In addition, GameStop's online listing has been pushed back from December 5 to the 15th. If you're impatient, however, you can purportedly still purchase MadCatz's "HD Premium" component cables for $60 as of December 1.

Has Nintendo underestimated the expedience at which consumers have adopted HD (or, at least, ED)? A 480p screen isn't a head-turner, but it certainly beats standard definition. Looks like the House that Mario Built might have to add more detail into the plumber's mustache sooner than they expected.
Nintendo sells out of Wii component cables originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 16 Nov 2006 17:25:00 EST. And those are two great tastes that taste great together; Engadget shows how to make an Xbox 360 VGA cable out of a lowly composite part.

Unlike the PS2 and GameCube, the Xbox 360 cables include every pin -- even the ones not used by the cable-specific video connection. Because these pins already connect to the console, it's just a matter of wiring a VGA socket to the previously-unused terminals.

Total cost? $7. Get out the soldering iron, and save your money for games.

See also: PSA: Use the right cables for your TV
Add VGA to standard Xbox 360 cable originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 14 Nov 2006 17:55:00 EST. Gamers haven't had the same problem with the Xbox 360 <strike>or PS3</strike> because it ships with cables that support high-definition signals, but the basic issue is the same.

HDTVs look great with HD sources, but when playing analog signals, they look even worse than the analog TVs they replace. That's one of the dirty secrets of the HD upgrade; 480i games and broadcasts look weak. If gaming on a TV with component inputs, those cables are a must; they even make Xbox, PS2, and GameCube titles clearer. (And for fully HD consoles, cables that carry digital signals -- like HDMI -- are best.)

Wii buyers with 480p-or-better TVs, be sure to budget those cables into your console purchase.

[Update 1: PS3 users with HDTVs, you're going to have the same issue. Somehow we forgot that the component or HDMI cables cost extra.
Everyone is hearing a lot about 1080p resolution these days. Sony is promoting the resolution as a primary feature in the PlayStation 3 and Microsoft recently added the functionality to the Xbox 360. All of these big resolution numbers are nice and all, but is 1080p really all that it's cracked up to be?

According to the Imaging Science Foundation -- a professional organization that trains TV calibration techniques to technicians -- the three most important factors of a television's image quality are contrast ratio, color saturation, and color accuracy. Resolution ranks fourth and we're surprised that other important factors such as response time didn't rank above resolution. Tests done at CNET confirm the relative non-importance of 1080p over 720p; they state they find only minor differences in the two HD resolutions -- and only in very specific scenarios.

If professionals who spend much of their time reviewing HDTV sets have difficulties telling the difference between 720p and 1080p, will the general public have any reason to spend the extra dough on a 1080p set? Even if a person could notice the difference, would they care if they can see individual nose hairs when they are when being shot at in Resistance: Fall of Man or Gears of War? With the near zero difference the additional pixels make, Microsoft and Sony are sure spending a lot of money -- and driving up development costs -- for a feature few will truly appreciate.

We go to number two on the countdown to find this European PS3 ad, touting high-definition pitchers, or at least that's what it sounds like to these American ears. Oh, she's saying "pictures."

Accents aside -- we know our accents sound like gears grinding in a failed transmission, stop saying so -- the ad doesn't seem too special. At least it doesn't have any dolls, and instead features lots of non-sequitur explosions. The feature was a welcomed gain for non-Media Center users who have been limited to photo and music sharing between their Windows PCs and Xbox 360s -- and to anyone who's longed to watch video files on 360 via a thumb drive or CD/DVD.

Unfortunately, licensing fees and digital rights concerns have limited the patch to WMV-support only. Being Microsoft's proprietary format, WMV is neither popular or oft-used, taking a backseat to preferred codecs like DivX and XviD. And so, we're still left scrambling for a solution to getting our video content onto Xbox 360.
Continue reading How-To: Transcode & stream videos on Xbox 360

How-To: Transcode & stream videos on Xbox 360 originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 07 Nov 2006 11:55:00 EST.
I just had the time to quickly start poking around with the 360 dashboard update, and I'm sorry to report that 1080p is broken on the XBR2 via both component and VGA. When I select 1080p in VGA, I get a windowboxed picture with tons of info cut off on both sides and a warning from the TV saying "Invalid Signal--Check Your PC Output". Over component, when I select 1080p I get a screen full of static for 10 seconds before the console reverts to 1080i.

Feh. Since the XBR2 is one of the most high-profile, wildely available 1080p displays on the market, you'd think MS' engineers would find a way to get the two to work together, but noooooo...

While it's outrageous to suggest that MS would intentionally blacklist their rival's most popular HDTVs, it is amusingly ironic -- unless you're staring at a $4000 distorted screen right now. Another patch could be imminent. It's worth pointing out that most people on that thread say they're going to return their Sony set, not their Xbox 360. And, as usual, someone comments that an upscaled 1080i signal is indiscernible anyway.

Sidenote: The general public doesn't have a prayer of grasping this stuff.

Fall update won't play nice with Sony 1080p TVs originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 31 Oct 2006 23:59:00 EST. We've talked to death about its lack of an HDMI cable, component cable inputs are available even on standard definition screens to enhance the image, as are S-video inputs.

Those with PS2 component cables will be happy to know that they work with the PS3. A quick search on GameStop reveals a third-party PS2 component cable for only $14.99. While $15 is relatively little money to the consumer, it would likely cost Sony even less to pack in a cable of its own, or at least create a six-prong composite/component hybrid, similar to the Xbox 360.

Let's throw this one to the masses: are those who intend to buy a PlayStation 3 discouraged by this news?

[Thanks, The Dude]

[Update 1: clarified source, currently affected regions.]
PS3: component cables sold separately [update 1] originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 11 Oct 2006 22:00:00 EST. Depicting a rhythmically isolated DVD guy facing off against six HD-DVD dancers, it's a technology comparison competely devoid of technology and filled to the brim with bodies gyrating in largely unimaginable ways.

With the upscaled DVD dancers apparently disqualified from the event, HD-DVD soundly trounces plain 'ole DVD, its vibrant victory converted into a catchy and hilariously non-sensical "six times the resolution, six times the wow." Yes, really. Just how much is that, exactly? The answer is, quite sadly, after the break.

[via NeoGAF]
Continue reading The algebra of wows, inspired by Xbox 360 HD-DVD dancers

The algebra of wows, inspired by Xbox 360 HD-DVD dancers originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 11 Oct 2006 20:17:00 EST. Or maybe it's obvious: save money (albeit pennies) by cutting the IR port out of manufacturing costs, plus earn money by forcing consumers to buy the only PS3-compatible remote, yours. Then again, maybe this is simply Sony's bold attempt to phase out infrared; maybe it's part of the "next-gen begins when we say so" act. After all, third-party remotes will come, including a device that supports both infrared and Bluetooth (aka the "true-universal" remote). Now there's an idea ...
Universal remotist finds fault with PS3, console lacks IR port originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 11 Oct 2006 17:50:00 EST. As Joystiq writers, we mostly play games on fancy HDTVs, but Gamasutra reminds us that we're in the minority; HDTV adoption has been increasing, but the market is still in its infancy.

A series of interviewed analysts discuss the conditions needed for HDTVs to be common and if Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo have the right approach to the new technology. The analysts don't offer any concrete answers, but share the opinion that movies will continue to drive the transition because they're much more common than games.

The next-generation console war is about HD -- or lack of it -- as much as anything. We're disappointed that the Wii won't run higher than 480p, but maybe Nintendo and its developers are saving by omitting something most gamers lack. Or if consumers want a Blu-ray player combined with a game system, Sony will likely be the next-gen champion.

See also: Capcom aware of Dead Rising standard-definition woes
See also: Mea culpa for 360's King Kong
HD young, gamers on standard-def originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 09 Oct 2006 21:20:00 EST.
But what's curiously missing is a little context. This is the same guy that publicly endorsed HD-DVD in a Microsoft press release five months ago, using many of the same words. Careless journalists and bloggers are quoting him like this is some kind of new development in the format war. Sure, it's interesting that he's continuing his support, but it's not particularly noteworthy.

After users of non-HD television complained about the unusual amount of squinting required to read the on-screen text, Capcom admitted awareness of the problem and doled out a list of DIY solutions, none of them nearly as effective as a downloadable patch would be. So, what's the word on that?

Unfortunately, the word is "no." Speaking to 1UP, a Capcom representative pointed out that "the amount of text and the size of the patch necessary to change the text" were prohibitive in producing a patch. "We had asked the team if it was even possible but ... due to the scope of what a patch would need to cover, it wasn't possible." This is far from a game breaking fault, but it's certainly disappointing that Capcom completely failed to spot a problem that would end up affecting a notable group of players. Coupled with King Kong's scenes of SDTV darkness, it seems some developers are a little too eager to rush into the HD era.
Dead Rising: patch chance lost! originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 11 Sep 2006 20:10:00 EST. The Dead Rising developer seems to have committed a similar oversight, presumably testing the game on HD monitors only.

Over on the Capcom BBS forums, complaints have piled up, prompting one forum administrator to post: "Dear Everyone, I have heard your concerns and passed them to every source within Capcom possible. I feel your pain as I, myself, have a large SDTV and am having trouble reading the mission objectives, item names, etc."

Joystiq can confirm that item descriptions, in-game dialogue, and mission objectives (given via text prompts) are unreadable on a 27" standard-definition TV set using component A/V inputs. That this "next-generation" title doesn't provide voiceovers for dialogue and mission objectives is questionable enough, but not testing the game in standard-definition resolution? C'mon Capcom, get to know your consumer base.
Capcom aware of Dead Rising standard-definition woes originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 15 Aug 2006 12:25:00 EST.
