Monolith has taken the PC-centric gameplay of the emerging MOBA (or DotA, or LoL, or even action RTS, whatever you like to call it) genre, and translated it over to a console and a controller. But since that first play at E3, I've gotten a few more chances to play the game at Comic-Con and PAX. GOME (acronyms!) is more than just a console clone of the popular League of Legends and the upcoming Dota 2.

Monolith has iterated on this complex strategy/action genre in a few different ways. Here's a list of five different things, whether you're a level 30 summoner or a Venomancer newbie, that you'll find new and interesting about Guardians of Middle-earth when it arrives for consoles later this year.
Continue reading How Guardians of Middle-earth innovates on the MOBA gametype

How Guardians of Middle-earth innovates on the MOBA gametype originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 05 Sep 2012 12:00:00 EST. It's like, we can only keep up this vault-plundering, mustache-twirling, damselnapping, puppy-kicking veneer before it gets a little long in the tooth, you know? We've long been thinking about seeing how the other half lives -- an opportunity that will soon be afforded to us by City of Heroes upcoming, massive content expansion, Going Rogue.
Check out the developer's diary posted above to see the implications of the game's new alignment-switching feature, and to catch a glimpse at the new environments of Praetoria. We think it looks like a fairly renovated version of Paragon City, only with much more moral ambiguity.
City of Heroes: Going Rogue dev diary has a change of heart originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 01 Jun 2010 21:30:00 EST. Are you particularly proud of the homebrewed 3D Dot Game Heores character model you recently whipped up? You know, the one that looks like Link/Mario/Belmont/Your favorite Final Fantasy archetype? Great news -- you can now share your pixelated protagonists with other players, or simply borrow the fruits of their labors, using the recently launched "Hall of Heroes" web hub.

There are only a handful of characters live on the hub right now, but they all look like they'd serve as worthy saviors of the land of Dotnia. Especially the one named "Rad Naner," which is a banana wearing sunglasses and riding a skateboard.
3D Dot Game Heroes 'Hall of Heroes' character-sharing hub launched originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 11 May 2010 10:55:00 EST.
Lots of the celebrities at last night's Battlefield: Bad Company 2 celebrity benefit tournament didn't know much about gaming, but Greg Grunberg is the exception. Even if he can't dive deep into the differences between next-gen shooters, he at least knows the audience, having appeared on Lost and Alias and controlled minds as Matt Parkman on Heroes. He was at the benefit in West Hollywood promoting the Epilepsy Foundation (his son deals with epileptic seizures, and Grunberg has done some advocacy work on his own as well), and right before he sat down to play BFBC2 alongside Chad Ochocinco and Marshall Faulk, he sat down to chat with us.

Read on to hear about what Grunny is doing for Halo: Reach, his favorite iPhone games and why he's so sure there should be one more full season of Heroes.

Continue reading Interview: Greg Grunberg at the Battlefield: Bad Company 2 celebrity challenge

Interview: Greg Grunberg at the Battlefield: Bad Company 2 celebrity challenge originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 19 Feb 2010 18:00:00 EST. Excerpt from a Cryptic Studios staff meeting, Oct. 29, 2009:

"Okay, guys, listen up. I know we were all excited about the promotion we were going to run when the one millionth hero was created within Champions Online. You know, we'd take the lucky crimefighter and base a short series of graphic novels on him or her, ultimately culminating in a three-picture deal with Paramount and keeping the hero's creator -- and as a bonus, our game -- in the pop cultural spotlight? Well, we just heard from moderators that the one millionth hero was named ... Boner Dragon."

"Boner Dragon?"

"Boner Dragon."

"I think we should just do a press release instead. A press release which deftly avoids mentioning the hero's name."

"That is an excellent idea, Jeffrey."
One million heroes fighting crime in Champions Online originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 29 Oct 2009 19:30:00 EST. You don't need to read any further. Battlestar Galactica is now available on the PlayStation Store. Each episode will be available in SD and HD, with future episodes arriving on the Store one day after its televised broadcast.

Oh, and the video store has also expanded to include other shows and movies from the NBC/Universal line-up, such as The Office, 30 Rock, Heroes, The 40 Year Old Virgin and Milk. SD content can be downloaded to both a PS3 and PSP, while HD content is for the PS3 only.
Battlestar Galactica (and other NBC shows) now available on the PlayStation Store originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 10 Mar 2009 17:30:00 EST. Ubisoft apparently agrees with the geek hive mind that Heroes isn't even worth bothering with anymore because the publisher has returned the game rights to NBC Universal, reports MTV Multiplayer. Ubisoft originally announced a game based on the former hit show last July.

It's not exactly clear if the rights were returned due to the show's declining condition, or because Ubisoft was unhappy with the performance of its Lost and CSI based games. There's always a chance another publisher might pick up the rights for the show. Dancing With the Stars got turned into a game, so anything is possible
Ubisoft drops 'Heroes' game rights originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 06 Nov 2008 17:30:00 EST. This is a post we've been waiting to write for a long time. Not only has Universal finally revealed their Blu-Ray plans for the coming months, but our favorite Universal property, Heroes, will be available on Blu-Ray this August. There's no word on a price or specific release date, but it's nice to know that both seasons 1 and 2 will be available later this year. Finally.

Other Universal releases due out from July onwards include The Incredible Hulk, Hellboy II and the Mummy trilogy. For more information check out Hi-Def Digest's report on Universal's announcement. Please feel free to squeal like little girls about the Heroes announcement in the comments after the beep.

Beep.
Universal announces Blu-Ray plans; Heroes available in August originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 18 Apr 2008 14:00:00 EST. So, if the prospect of fragging alongside Mr. Alexander sounds rather appealing, shoot a friend request over to snapmanifesto and prepare for Frontlines gaming on March 14th from 11:30PM-12:30AM eastern. And note, your abnormal super powers will not be allowed while gaming over Live.
Game with Heroes producer fame originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 03 Mar 2008 11:15:00 EST. We already knew about a certain Heroes HD DVD deal, but we were semi-optimistic about others. Anyway, speaking of Heroes, that offer is 100% valid, starts today and will net you a free Heroes: Season One HD DVD when you purchase the Xbox 360 HD DVD player at Best Buy. Other Best Buy offers include a free comic book with the purchase of Conan, a free wraslin' demo (which is available on the XBLM too) when you pre-order Smackdown vs. Raw 2008, and a free bonus disc loaded with gamer pictures, trailers and songs when you pre-order Mass Effect. And if you're looking for other deals worth mentioning this week, then sorry, but there really isn't any. Circuit City, Target and everyone else were let downs. But cheer up, because a little birdy told us about next week's Circuit City retail ads and all we're saying is a free guitar stand with Guitar Hero III purchase and a free Homer ball with The Simpsons Game purchase. Shhh, you didn't hear that from us.
Sunday ads: Heroes HD DVD and some free stuff originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 21 Oct 2007 16:15:00 EST. Three winners will be chosen every day for the next month with each winner receiving a special Heroes decorated Xbox 360 console, HD DVD player add-on and Heroes: Season One on HD DVD. Sadly, there is no mention that entry into the sweepstakes will give you special Heroes powers. That's a bummer, but winning free 360 goods will cheer us up and make us forget about being a super special hero.

[Via Major Nelson]
Amazon.com giving away Heroes Xbox 360 bundles originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 21 Oct 2007 12:45:00 EST. Just one day after Hollywood trade-mag Variety reported that Ubisoft's licensed Heroes game would be revealed this weekend (at a little party called Comic-Con) another, uh, Hollywood trade-mag - this time The Hollywood Reporter - seal the deal, reporting the game should hit next-gen consoles and PC as early as late 2008.

And so, Ubisoft adds Heroes to their stable, continuing their aggressive push for popular licensed content after confirming Lost back in April and James Cameron's Avatar on Tuesday. Now, we patiently wait to see how they adapt the talky superhero mystery into a compelling gaming experience.
Heroes game confirmed, Ubisoft at the helm originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 26 Jul 2007 12:45:00 EST. NBC and Ubisoft aren't ready to talk about it yet, but Variety reports that the two are close to closing a deal that would let the French game company turn the sci-fi hit Heroes into a game. Though they're currently mum, there's a little convention in San Diego this weekend, and they might be able to find a few geeks there who would get excited about the news, if they wanted to unveil it there.

Though it may seem like a natural choice for a game version, what with the superpowers and all, we wonder if anyone at Ubisoft has considered the fact that there's very little actual hero-ing on Heroes. It's largely people talking to other people about their powers and only occasionally using them. Don't get us wrong, we love the show. We hope that Ubisoft doesn't try to jam it into an action mold.

That being said, there's the Reservoir Dogs game, which is either a knock against our argument or terrifying, irrefutable proof of it, we're not sure.
Variety: Ubisoft's Heroes game likely revealed this weekend originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 25 Jul 2007 08:30:00 EST. We need it like we need oxygen to live. So, when head honcho Suda 51 (Goichi Suda) talks, we listen. His latest interview with Gamasutra is no different.

Suda's inspiration for the game comes from a movie called El Topo, by Alejandro Jodorowsky. Can't say we've seen it, but you can bet we're planning on it. Suda says he always wanted to create a story where progression occurs through a series of battles. Also, he says he learned a lot from Ubisoft's Red Steel. Now, before you blow your top, he says he learned from the good and the bad, so at least he recognizes that the game had faults.

Of course, this isn't the first time he's talked inspirations on the game, so take it as you will
Suda 51 talks No More Heroes some more originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 06 Jul 2007 15:35:00 EST. We immediately put on our Secret No More Heroes Fan Club Decoder Rings and set to the task of figuring out the mysterious secret code in which they were written.

Travis Touchdown is #11 in the assassin ranking. He loves pro wrestling, competitive fighting, and a "Japanimation" (their word) called "Bizarre Jerry." Sylvia Christel is an agent of the assassins' group. A mysterious, cool woman, she organizes the ranking competition herself (we think.) Holly Summers is ranked #6. She is a model who also works as an assassin.

None of this is entirely new, but it does have the benefit of being about No More Heroes. And it's another excuse to go look at the character art.
No More Heroes character bios originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 28 Jun 2007 14:10:00 EST. If you've ever wanted to get your game on as Hiro Nakamura, Peter Petrelli, or Niki / Jessica, now you can ... although the results might make you wish you had Hiro's time-traveling powers so you could go back and correct that mistake.

While the blades are excellent photos of Tim Sale's paintings from the series, the artwork on the guide background can only be called craptastic. It's just a tiled version of that strange helix symbol in the show that pops up on everything from Niki's shoulder, to Hiro's sword. C'mon, in this day and age we're still getting tiles? With the season finale hitting airwaves tonight, we were hoping for more.

The picture pack contains a painting of Claire, the Heroes "eclipse" logo, the "exploding man" painting, and the helix yet again. This means you'll have to download future packs with more heroes in 'em, but we're waiting on Sylar for ours. Boom.
Save the cheerleader ... and your Xbox 360 originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 21 May 2007 18:28:00 EST. It seems that Xbox Live Marketplace was designed for just such a thing, as numerous themes and picture packs have appeared, which do little else than tell other people how much you like a certain product (we bought a Halo theme, so we're not exactly innocent). Marketing genius. The latest in this line of fan-vertising is new Heroes content available on Xbox Live Marketplace. Specifically, there is a theme available for 150 points and a picture pack for 80 points. Strangely absent from the Marketplace: the actual Heroes television program.

With such a perfect digital delivery system, you'd think NBC would be offering Heroes on Video Marketplace already. Alas, for now your stuck with the digital equivalent of a T-shirt.
Pay to show your love for Heroes originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 21 May 2007 18:00:00 EST. On top of some recent artwork released by developer NIBRIS, we now have some interesting gameplay details.

The game will total around twenty hours in length.

There will be two playable characters: a thirty-year old woman of Polish-Hungarian descent, and her son.

There are eighteen species of monsters; which ones you see will be determined by how you play the game.

The game will feature no (i.e. real-time) loading.

Voice acting will be a prominent feature.

The graphics will contain copious amounts of fog, to match up with that artwork.

Last night's Heroes episode was totally awesome.

He's also writing the Snatcher radio drama, which makes him our best friend. Grasshopper Manufacture's Suda 51 applies a punk-rock philosophy to game design, and the results are always interesting.

He seems to have made the Wii his home console for the time being. Do you welcome his contributions? Are you looking forward to No More Heroes as much as we are? The kind of stuff he likes to make is pretty far outside the usual Wii fare, but we feel that the Wii all about shaking up the norm. Is there merit to his disruptive game design ideals, or are they just disruptive for disruption's sake? If you're a Suda fan now, would you still be if he didn't have the glow of Wii association? Can we put some more question marks in here?
Wii Warm Up: Suda 51 originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 21 Apr 2007 10:00:00 EST. Just from looking at the shirt, we have no idea if it's related to the Wii game, but the 4cr poster who purchased it seemed to think so, indicating that it is part of a line of No More Heroes shirts.

We'd like to see the full line of these shirts; we'd be unlikely to purchase this one, but we really like the idea of having some No More Heroes memorabilia. Suda 51's games and his company Grasshopper Manufacture's website prove that they are capable of remarkable stylishness. This video interview with Grasshopper Manufacture's Suda 51, the eccentric auteur responsible for Contact and Killer 7, shows off the stylish semi-cel-shaded graphics and bizarre second-person camera angles we've come to expect from a Suda game. In addition, we get a few details about the storyline, which concerns an otaku named Travis Touchdown who wins a beam sword in an online auction and then (naturally) gets involved with a bunch of competitive professional hitmen.

Suda goes on to discuss some of the influences that he synthesized into his new Wii game No More Heroes, including Ultimate Fighting, Grand Theft Auto, and Johnny Knoxville. No mention is made of the title, which is also the title of a Stranglers song-- no surprise from a guy who titled his GDC presentation "Punk's Not Dead."

The video is embedded, after the cut.
Continue reading Suda 51's inspirations for No More Heroes

Suda 51's inspirations for No More Heroes originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 09 Apr 2007 10:00:00 EST. No details are available yet about which of the show's many characters will be playable in the cell phone game ... or if the story will be separate from the show's storyline or ... well, really no details are available about any of it, save that it will be based on Heroes.

It's well-worn territory for Gameloft, which has already given similar treatment to hot TV properties like Lost and Desperate Housewives. Looking at those rather unlikely choices, Heroes may just be their easiest adaptation to date.

Though light on details, what the announcement does provide is an opportunity for you junior marketers to come up with your own witty, cell-phone based play on one of Heroes' many infamous taglines.

Right now, we're leaning towards "Save the RAZR ... save the world."
"Heroes" game on the way ... to your mobile phone originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 02 Apr 2007 08:45:00 EST. Apparently one of Micah's other tech-based powers is the ability to play unreleased video games. That would actually be a pretty sweet ability to have. Of course, talk about getting no work done as a result. Like us rushing to get this post to you before the show even airs. We read your minds, a la Matt Parkman, and knew you'd want to see this early.

Is there also some sort of a hint or clue buried in the game title? Hiro is desperately trying to get his hands on that special samurai sword that he thinks will let him access his powers once again. Of course in the game Heavenly Sword, the title weapon is the game. According to an IGN interview with the developer Ninja Theory, "The story revolves around an ancient sword, the Heavenly Sword, which belonged to a deity and can never be wielded by a mortal without destroying them ... but as the sword is not meant for her, it sucks away her life force. So you begin the game with only a few hours left to live and have to fulfill this one last mission before the sword finally takes your life. But until that day arrives, Nariko's fighting skills rock."

Also, Gollum/King Kong/Nikola Tesla's assistant Andy Serkis will be playing villainous King Botan in this game. Is there any sort of connection here? We'd love to see Serkis on heroes. His power would be to make you feel slightly uncormfortable. Very interesting, NBC. Masi Oka recently spoke about his undying love for the PSP system, saving him from the more boring aspects of being an actor, like the constant waiting and traveling he must do. "That's all I do on planes, is whip out my PSP and just stay focused on it the whole ride through. I won't even get food. I'm not a big fan of flying, so the PSP system helps me."

Oka takes advantage of all of PSP's capabilities, from games, to music to UMD movies. He's incredibly excited for the advanced Remote Play functionality with the PS3: "With PS3, I'm sure you'll be able to use the PSP system to play games down the line," said Oka. "It'd be cool to play Madden that way. I can't remember all of the plays, and when I'm playing against someone, I don't like the plays to be shown on the screen, but with a PSP, you could select plays for the PS3 Madden and not show anyone what you're thinking."

The full interview is available at PlayStation.com. You can catch Hiro, being a hero, on Heroes on NBC. Unfortunately, it looks like Nintendo has one hell of a hangover (we can't blame them, we were up till 6 AM ourselves), and they only managed to spit out two rather inauspicious titles: Baseball and Urban Champion, both for the NES. After five hundred points each, we maintain that both playing baseball and punching someone in the face are both far more enjoyable <strike>in real life</strike> in Wii Sports.

And by the way, fellow fanboys, Happy New Year! Did your megaton party involve raucous Wii-playing?
Joystiq attended Spike TV's 2006 Video Game Awards last week, and here's the video to prove it. We literally had to shove our way into our designated spot at the press line and jockey for position with other outlets like Hustler and The Greater Cuyahoga News-Press. Once we were set, we asked the hard-hitting questions that have been on gamers' minds for some time.

Some highlights:

Joe Rogan literally going insane on camera talking about virtual reality

Mark Ecko talking about Britney Spears' underwear allergy

Samuel L. Jackson not popping us in the face

One word of warning, the video isn't safe for work by a long shot. Joe Rogan uses some very colorful language near the end that has to be seen to be believed ... then again, maybe not. It is Joe Rogan after all. The 2006 Video Game Awards air tonight on Spike TV. Tune in if you want to see Sam Jackson drop some F-bombs, Stewie Griffin insult Sam, and Sarah Silverman insult every gamer in the world. The best thing about it is the Burning Crusade opening cinematic that premieres during the show. That and the skits about the motion-capture guy. Nothing is funnier than jokes about balls, right?

Alternatively, you could also go back and start beating Gears of War on insane. The night is yours!
Joystiq on the Video Game Awards yellow carpet originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 13 Dec 2006 14:25:00 EST. Nintendo dropped yet another four vintage goodies on us at noon EST today, and here are the pickings:

Ice Hockey (NES) - a much-loved hockey sim that, unfortunately, is beginning to show its age. Where is the ever-revered NHL '94 for SNES?

Gunstar Heroes (Sega Genesis) - If Jack Thompson had been as retarded in 1993 as he is now, he'd certainly have gone after this game. Much-lauded for its frenetic and gleeful gut-ripping gameplay, GH is considered one of Sega's best games. Check this 2-D shooter out.

Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine (Sega Genesis) - some beans are falling, or something, and you have to match them...whatever. We got Columns last week, didn't we?

Alien Crush (TG-16) - a rather odd pinball-sim involving scary aliens with a multitude of eyes. If you're into the pinball scene, go for it, if not, settle for some extraterrestrial orange soda. (Zing!)

We still, of course, anxiously await the previous announced Toe Jam and Earl. We wantsssss it!
VC Monday: Plus Four! originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 11 Dec 2006 13:05:00 EST. The forthcoming Grasshopper title will now be called No More Heroes. We're at a loss for which title is a better choice. Once called Heroes, the new name for the title is No More Heroes. Unlike Killer 7, you can roam freely around the Santa Destroy, a city purported to look more Westernized with a name so god awful we cringe typing it.

In No More Heroes, you play assassin-wannabe Travis Touchdown (*cringe*), who fights with a beam katana. Sword fighting, however, sounds pretty hands-off: you position the Wiimote either up, down, or centered to indicate one of three fighting stances. Fighting is then accomplished via repeatedly tapping the A button. Repetition reprieve comes from shaking the control to build up an energy meter (Dragon Ball Z, anyone?) and swing the controlling following on-screen prompts.

We're a bit dismayed by how the control scheme is described, but we'll await a hands-on impression before we make any judgments. When will a game designer figure out how to implement a fun-but-accurate sword fighting simulator?

Suda 51 is hoping to sell one million copies worldwide, so expect a US release. No More Heroes is due out Summer 2007 in Japan.

[Via Evil Avatar]

See Also:
Suda 51 reveals Heroes (Wii) game trailer

New name, details for Suda51's Heroes originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 29 Nov 2006 13:15:00 EST. Revealing the protagonist's airship, it turns out that utilizing it will become a critical aspect of the game.

The aircraft will be present in battles and it is up to the player to defend it and ensure its safe escape once battle is complete. Translation isn't the best, so we do not have the name of the ship or any more information regarding its use in the game.

See also:
They have one written-by-a-marketing-team write-up that features profiles of the in-game characters: <strike>Generic McAmerican,</strike> Jimmy Paterson, William Holt and John Baker. Snore... The other is an interview with the game's producer, Peter Choi. It very similar to a previous interview, but it's great to know that he understands some of the things PSP fans are looking for from a game:

32 player online (Infrastructure) multiplayer. I can't stress enough how awesome that sounds.

"The game is also optimized to have very short load times, which is hugely important for gamers on-the-go." (Yes!)

"User Hosted Server feature along with official EA Nation Server games, are both fully customizable and have very detailed leaderboards and stat tracking." (Yes!)

If all that hype wasn't enough for you, then you might want to check out the newest trailer for the game. It looks a lot like the previous videos, but with even sharper, prettier graphics.
Medal of Honor hype on IGN originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 07 Oct 2006 08:00:00 EST. If you were turned off by the disappointing Ninety-Nine Nights, you might say Phantagram has done the smart thing by giving Blueside a little creative freedom to experiment with "never-before-imagined innovation and fresh ideas" (from the web site). 2006 has also been a banner year for RPGs, not to mention the fact that 30% of Joystiq readers prefer role-playing adventures. So why not ride the wave?

There are some potential pitfalls: random dungeons, branching stories, and characters who get tired aren't all that innovative. There's also Blueside's inexperience with RPGs, and the imminent risk of diluting the franchise. On the flip side of the coin, you have KUF's rich fantasy world to play in and the impressive production quality that highlighted KUF: Heroes. Do you think Circle of Doom will be another Champions of Norrath, or a Seven Sorrows?

And despite N3's shortcomings, Phantagram hasn't necessarily become gun-shy. This RPG diversion is supposedly just a side quest in the series, and the Korean developer is currently working on another KUF sequel of the more familiar action-strategy variety -- after they finish the PC version of Circle of Doom.

Kingdom Under Fire's new direction originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 02 Oct 2006 16:00:00 EST.
