Following protracted negotiations across the last few months, Hilco finalized the acquisition this morning, and in doing so ensured 25 stores previously earmarked for closure are to remain open.

HMV, one of the UK's most prominent high street sellers of games, effectively declared itself bankrupt by entering administration earlier this year. Hilco took on the retailer's debt, while Deloitte announced closures for almost half its outlets, with nearly 1,500 people laid off as a result. Today's news means HMV retains 141 stores and some 2,500 employees.
Continue reading Hilco completes HMV acquisition, 25 stores saved from closure

Hilco completes HMV acquisition, 25 stores saved from closure originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 05 Apr 2013 07:00:00 EST. The multimedia rental and sales chain entered administration in January, a month which also saw Blockbuster's US arm close a further 300 stores. Gordon Brothers Europe acquired the retailer's 264 UK stores, with the BBC reporting 2000 jobs may be saved as a result. How much the sale cost remains undisclosed.

With GAME's troubles of last year, the demises of Blockbuster and HMV left UK high street games retail with worryingly threadbare prospects. The administration process leaves Blockbuster with just over half of the 500 stores it had before, while HMV's high street presence is facing a similar level of cutback. However, both the Telegraph and the Financial Times are reporting restructuring specialist Hilco is close to securing a deal to buy HMV, having taken control of the retail chain's debt.
Blockbuster UK finds buyer originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 25 Mar 2013 13:00:00 EST. On its own, the Premium SKU typically retails for £299.99, and that's without ZombiU thrown in for good measure.

HMV did not clarify to Joystiq whether this price reduction is temporary or permanent, so if you're British and in the market for the Wii U that's worth owning, now may be the right time.
Wii U Premium bundle with ZombiU down to £200 at participating HMV locations originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 22 Mar 2013 11:15:00 EST. These further closures are resulting in 464 lost jobs, making a post-administrative total of at least 1,454 layoffs.

HMV, one of the UK's most prominent high street sellers of games, went into administration last month after failing to acquire $483 million to finance debts. Restructuring company Hilco then took on the retailer's debt. This latest round of store closures means HMV's UK high street arm will be cut by almost half to 116 stores in four to six weeks' time.
Continue reading HMV closing 37 more stores, 464 layoffs

HMV closing 37 more stores, 464 layoffs originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 20 Feb 2013 11:00:00 EST. Deloitte, the company's administrators, said the closures should occur within the next one to two months.

"This step has been taken in order to enhance the prospects of securing the business' future as a going concern," said Joint Administrator Nick Edwards. "We continue to receive strong support from staff and are extremely grateful to them for their commitment during an understandably difficult period. All other key stakeholders remain very supportive and I continue to be hopeful of securing a future for the restructured business."

HMV also posted a statement on its Facebook page this morning, echoing Deloitte by saying the closures give the retailer the best chance possible of a viable future on the high street:

"As you may be aware, a number of our stores in the UK have been earmarked for closure. This decision has not been taken lightly and, though very sad and regrettable, it is necessary to give HMV the best possible chance of emerging from administration and having a future on the high street. We'd like to acknowledge the invaluable contribution of affected colleagues, who continue to work with great passion and dedication, and this decision in no way reflects on their considerable efforts on behalf of HMV. We also sincerely thank our customers in these locations for their valued support over many years, who we hope will continue to shop at HMV."
HMV entered administration in January after failing to secure $483 million for debt financing. Hilco, a British restructuring company, subsequently took on the debt and is expected to take over the company. HMV's struggles have headlined a tough 2013 so far for British games retail, with Play.com closing its retail operations and Blockbuster UK also entering administration.
Continue reading HMV facing 66 store closures, 930 layoffs

HMV facing 66 store closures, 930 layoffs originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 07 Feb 2013 09:00:00 EST. Today, retailers compete for your gaming dollars with pre-order incentives, and Halo 4 is the latest to play into that retail shuffle.

Depending on the retailer you hitch your Warthog to, you'll snag some very different things: Amazon will offer a golden "web" skin for use in multiplayer and a pair of exclusive emblems, while GameStop will offer the customizable "forest" skin for multiplayer. UK retailer GAME is tossing in the blue circuit armor skin, an arctic weapon skin and six specializations - these are further cosmetic tweaks to help you stand out from the rest of the cybernetic crowd.

Other specific UK retailers have their pre-order items listed past the break, like Blockbuster (you guys still have those over there?). And if you're really looking to buy everything with Halo 4 printed on it, the soundtrack and special editions are also tempting offers.

Halo 4 launches on November 6 worldwide, exclusively for the Xbox 360.
Continue reading Halo 4 pre-order goods plant their flag in select retailers

Halo 4 pre-order goods plant their flag in select retailers originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 18 Sep 2012 20:00:00 EST. Two major UK video-game retailers, HMV and Game, saw a drop in sales over Christmas, prompting HMV to reconsider its investment in games as a whole, The Telegraph reports. HMV's gaming market share fell 16 percent over the holidays, while sales in music and DVDs saw no change; games now account for 20 percent of HMV's sales. Chief Executive Simon Fox said HMV may focus only on AAA titles in the future.

Game's Christmas retail sales were down 15 percent, while year-on-year it lost 13 percent in sales, GamesIndustry.biz says. Online sales rose 4 percent, and sales for the year ending January 2012 dropped 12 percent, less than the UK gaming market's total loss of 13 percent. Game recently closed 39 stores and is expected to have 550 in the UK by 2013, GamesIndustry notes. CEO Ian Shepherd is banking on the Wii U and PS Vita to revitalize sales in 2012.
UK game industry holiday snapshot suggests weakening retail sales originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 11 Jan 2012 03:00:00 EST. Used games retailers across the globe have adopted a number of uncharacteristic policies regarding sales and trade-ins of Capcom's one-save-only title, Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D. When news of the game's unrestartability first surfaced, North American Gamestops announced they would not accept the game as a trade-in -- a policy which reversed today.

Speaking to IGN, a Gamestop rep explained, "GameStop did ask the U.S. store base to stop accepting trades on Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D as we evaluated the save system for the game." The representative added, "Upon further review of the process with our publisher partner, Capcom, GameStop will resume taking trades on the game effective Wednesday, June 29."

Overseas, British retailer HMV has ceased taking trades for the title -- and EB Games Australia has apparently stopped stocking the game altogether. A representative on the EB Games Facebook group explained, "If you would like to purchase it with us then of course we will sell it to you, it will be a case of an order with our store." They added, "We made the tough decision to remove it from sale because we have everybody's best interests in mind, and don't feel its fair that you guys would be paying $60 for what is essentially a one use game."
Game retailers go back and forth on Resident Evil: Mercenaries 3D sales policies originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 29 Jun 2011 13:40:00 EST. A report in tabloid The Sun of the 3DS making headaches in "thousands" of users is just plain untrue according to Nintendo, HMV and GAME, the three entities the paper mentions. Nintendo said returns are "well below" other hardware launches and GAME says less than five people have complained that the portable made them ill. In fact, you can't even return something in the UK because it made you sick.

HMV admits some 3DS systems have been traded in for store credit, but stops short of copping to "thousands." Sheesh, what is this world coming to when you can't even trust the tabloids?
Retailers shoot down claims of 3DS returns prompted by headaches originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 05 Apr 2011 22:15:00 EST. It turns out that when Iwata said the "Living Party" mode involved "unique game play only available with the Wii Remote," it was referring to the Wiimote's ability to generate sounds. These three minigames all involve sounds coming from the Wiimote.

"Wan Wan Card Game" plays animal sounds, and asks players to identify which on-screen animal makes the sound. Remote Control Hide and Seek has one player hide the Wiimote, and other players find it by listening to the sounds it emits. "Sensitive Bomb" tasks players with passing the Wiimote around. If it is jostled too much, it explodes! Or, at least, probably plays an "explosion" sound effect.

According to Nintendo's release calendar, Wii Party will be out in Japan on July 8. That means it's definitely complete enough for Nintendo of America to show it at E3.
Just today, the publisher announced that it'll be rewarding the first 50 people dressed in "Final Fantasy costumes" who arrive at the March 9 launch event for Final Fantasy XIII with a free copy of the game's soundtrack. Oh, and also, Square Enix producer Yoshinori Kitase and art director Isamu Kamikokuryo will be there, signing whatever you want.

The release further entices attendees with "high-profile DJ and TV presenter Alex Zane," who'll no doubt be spitting hot fire into a mic all evening. The event kicks off at 5:30PM at the Oxford Street HMV in London and runs until the sun comes up -- or 7:30PM, whichever comes first.
Lucky Brits. Not only do they get to be in closer geographic proximity to the dreamy David Tennant than we do, they're also extended some amazing post-Thanksgiving deals on typically pricey gaming equipment. Electronics retailer HMV is currently running two such offers in the UK -- the company has dropped the price of the PSP Go to £148.99, down significantly from the handheld's MSRP of £224.99. In addition, it's reduced the cost for DJ Hero, normally £107.99, down to just £69.99.

We're not sure how long these prices will stay this low, so if you live in the United Kingdom and have any interest in turntabling or digital distribution revolutions, we suggest you get while the getting is good.
HMV slashes price for DJ Hero, PSP Go in the UK originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 30 Nov 2009 12:30:00 EST.
While it's tempting to just write this off as the PSP Go bombing, we're guessing that the MSRP includes some room for retailer profit (unlike the standard price points for most consoles), and these stores are cutting the margins a bit in the interest of competitiveness. Of course, we don't know what the margin is for a Go, but we doubt all these companies would resort to a price drop so soon if they weren't still going to make a lot of money on the venture.
UK retailers already discounting PSP Go originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 05 Oct 2009 15:31:00 EST. UK residents who shop at GAME will be wandering around cluelessly in the dark this November when Modern Warfare 2 hits store shelves. Rather than getting the night vision goggle-equipped "Prestige Edition" like way cooler UK retailer HMV, those who shell out £119.99 for the 'Veteran Edition' will receive the 12-inch statue of returning Modern Warfare character Captain "Soap" MacTavish, seen above.

At £30 more for freakin' night vision goggles, a statue (albeit a nice one) might be a hard sell for those already investing more than double the cost of the game. HMV's GameOn! London event is officially off with the official website making the cancellation expressly clear. Ticket holders will be refunded for the event, which was to occur in November, after already being delayed from June.

For an event that had several big publishers allegedly committed to the show when it was first announced, organizers obviously ran into some major issues. Perhaps the Eurogamer Expo -- also partnered with HMV -- which takes place at the end of October, was just more attractive.

[Thanks, Shaffy]
GameOn! The Ninja Gaiden Treasury , as it's called, includes the same strategy guide, comic, and art sections advertised with the American release, though Tecmo Koei Europe offers a bit more detail about it. The comic, for example, is a "prologue comic" designed by Team Ninja. The downloadable costume is also part of the LE.

Europe's version includes one thing the American release doesn't: a complete soundtrack. Other than that, it's identical -- right down to the exclusivity to a single retailer. British-based retailer HMV is happy to report it has made over £1.95 billion ($3.21 billion) in sales last year (ending April 25, 2009), making an easy profit of £63 million ($103 million). HMV saw profits rise 4.4%, up from £56.6 million ($93.1 million) in the previous year. Gaming, GamesIndustry.biz notes, played a big part in boosting the retailer's overall figures, thanks to the introduction of used games sales -- which is a tactic that has become quite popular as of late.

24% of all HMV's sales in the UK & Ireland were accounted to video games. This number is an increase of 4% over the previous year and also raises HMV's market share for gaming by 0.4%. HMV International also saw 12% of its total sales go to gaming and related technologies.

Overall, it seems HMV is pleased with how its new strategy with gaming is panning out. If this keeps up, the HMV logo change we've discussed before just might happen for real.
Games accounted for one fourth of HMV's sales last year originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 01 Jul 2009 02:00:00 EST. Valve's collective, gusto-infused dislike of the PlayStation 3 seemed like it had abated when marketing director Mike Lombardi stated the company's intent to try to tap in to the system's growing user base late last year. However, old habits die hard -- when questioned about a listing for an EA-developed, PS3 version of Left 4 Dead on the site of British retailer HMV, a Valve representative soldered his tongue to his cheek, and replied, "Fantastic. I can't wait to see it."

Could this be the annoyed, outright denial of an extremely-oft-rumored title -- or is it a flexing of Valve's developmental muscles in response to EA's lackluster (though short) history with bringing Newell's brainchildren to the PS3? We're sure to know one way or the other by June 5 -- according to HMV, that's when the Zombocalypse sim is coming to Sony's big black box.
Valve mocks PS3 listing of Left 4 Dead originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 04 Feb 2009 10:40:00 EST. UK retailer HMV's chief executive, Simon Fox, says game sales may surpass music at the company within 18 months. Video games now account for 19% of sales at the <strike>music</strike> store, with an increase of 4.1% occurring in the last three months, Fox tells The Sun.

Earlier this year, the UK's Entertainment Retailers' Association noted that game sales overtook music at retail and were on the way to catching DVD revenues. Considering HMV's iconic symbol is that of a dog with a phonograph, we've gone ahead and updated the image for the new generation.

[Via GI.biz]
Games overtaking music sales at HMV originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 09 Sep 2008 14:00:00 EST. A new PS3 SKU will go to sale in Europe on August 27th. Already, the effects of the newly announced 80GB Core model has been affecting the sales stream of the 40GB model. According to HMV's commercial manager for games, stock of the 40GB model is dwindling as retailers prepare for the newly upgraded model. For those interested in picking up a PS3, it appears waiting for the 80GB model next month would be the wise choice.

"40GB stock has been in very short supply over the last few weeks ... PlayStation 3 will now boast a monopoly on Blu-ray, increased storage space and Play TV in the near future," Jonathan Hayes noted. Starting later this year, the chain will begin selling second-hand games at some of its locations, ramping up across the globe in 2009.

We're not sure why it took so long for HMV to begin selling used software. Perhaps it thought it was actually in Japan, which lifted its ban on used game sales in 2002?

In any event, the move will put HMV on a level playing field with other UK games retailers, including Game and CEX, who have offered used titles for some time (the latter dealing in them exclusively). Now all HMV has to do to recreate the US game-buying experience is to get bought out by GameStop. You know, like New Zealand's Gamesman.
HMV (finally) embraces used game sales originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 03 Jul 2008 05:00:00 EST. The folks at HMV know the heat turns us Brits into mushy-minded impulse buyers, and so they've gone and slashed prices on approximately 30 DS titles to around the £12 - £15 mark. Their recent GTAIV offer is proof of that. So, it should be no surprise that HMV is offering up a pretty convincing Microsoft points bribe to customers who are interested in Ninja Gaiden II this June. A 1000 Microsoft point bribe. That's right, anyone who ends up fulfilling their Ninja Gaiden II fix at HMV will score a redemption code for 1000 free MS points to use however they choose. Yesterday, HMV started taking pre-orders for a yet to be announced (or even confirmed) Xbox 360 version of MGS 4, which in turn caused a lot of fanboy arguing and excitement that a retailer was actually acknowledging the game's existence on the 360. But fanboys, it was all a mistake. This morning GamesIndustry.biz caught up with the UK retailer to talk about the MGS 4 listing when HMV admitted that the pre-order page was created in error saying that,

"In his enthusiasm, one of our online games team indicated that hmv.co.uk would start taking pre-orders for MGS4 on Xbox 360, when, in fact, he simply meant to ask customers if they wished to receive an alert in the event of this title one day coming out on this platform."

So, there you have it. It was a simple admin mistake and now we know that the retailer didn't have any insider's information. We guess it's time to restart our countdown clock and wait patiently until the next "MGS 4 is so headed to the 360" rumor surfaces. We'll give it another two days.
HMV's Xbox 360 MGS 4 listing was a mistake originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 06 Aug 2007 10:15:00 EST. Nope, no flamebait here. This is an opportunity for all of us to pat one another on the back. Let's break down how the store reports each console is performing. We'll start with our namesake, of course.

The PlayStation 3 is meeting sales expectations, sometimes exceeding them! When games start dropping, sales are anticipated to improve. If the price drops, they expect an even larger sales boost.

The Wii is, as always, in high demand. However, Nintendo has upped the ante and supplies are reportedly starting to stabilize.

Microsoft's Xbox 360, despite being on the market for a lot longer than the competition, is still performing well. Like with the PS3, sales boosts are expected should the pricing for the console change.

Hats off, all around. We're all doing well (some more than others) and we all deserve praise for actually having a gaming market where three consoles are all doing relatively well. It's impressive. Perhaps the HMV spokesperson Tim Ellis put it best: "From a retail and customer perspective it's great to have three games heavyweights relatively matched and vying for market domination. This creative tension is leading to fantastic innovative technology and brilliant games."
HMV reports healthy console sales all around, PS3 exceeds originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 02 Jun 2007 16:45:00 EST. HMV also says that the PS3 is "exceeding" sales targets but thinks they'll see better performance when (if) Sony drops the price. They say the Wii and Xbox 360 are both performing solidly.

Timm Ellis, head of games for HMV says, "From a retail and customer perspective it's great to have three games heavyweights relatively matched and vying for market domination. This creative tension is leading to fantastic innovative technology and brilliant games."

We're curious to see how game sales performance goes this summer (or winter for you south of the equator). The industry feels considerably different in this PSN, XBLA era and the summer game drought just doesn't seem as pronounced as it was in the past. If sales continue strong through the summer we may see a solid year-round release schedule in the coming years. The summer is still a good time to catch up on the games you may have missed. Remember, the sun causes cancer.
HMV says PS3 sales doing as expected originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 01 Jun 2007 19:06:00 EST. It starts at 7:30AM, but you should probably appear at 7:30PM the previous night. Why? The first 150 people at the party will get a copy of the new Virtua Tennis title. So, you could sleep, but you could also save $60, or have a really nice trade-in somewhere else, if you know what we mean. Can you see us winking? No? A shame.

A spokesperson explained why the 7:30AM opening and not the midnight opening, as planned by many other stores as well as other HMV's: "We will be opening 50 key stores around the country at midnight. However, we have decided to open the doors of our Oxford Street store at 7.30am on the Friday. We believe this is the most practical response to various sets of circumstances."

So, anyone going to be there? If there turns out to be a big line and giant SEGA banners and whatnot, we'd love to accept your pictures and slap up an article about it. We'd go, but... sort of an oversea flight. Our apologies!
HMV and SEGA -- friends, in all capital letters, for your PS3 launch originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 17 Mar 2007 15:00:00 EST. These feelings ranged from bad to worse. In fact, so negative was the public outcry, HMV was forced to scrap the deal altogether. Now, they've changed their strategy to a "first come, first served basis, with priority going to those customers who registered an initial interest to receive PS3 pre-order details once they were confirmed."

The company went on to explain, "Now that we've been able to confirm our level of PS3 stock with Sony, we're in a position to revise our original online offer. We will therefore be writing imminently to all the customers who have indicated that they wish to make the dual purchase to advise them that they can now pre-order the PS3 console by itself, if they prefer." Which they do. Probably. So, how do you guys feel now? The voice of the public can make a difference!
HMV scraps the PS3 + PSP bundle originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 09 Feb 2007 13:00:00 EST. The UK retailer, which initially guaranteed PS3 pre-orders to customers who also picked up a PSP, a 4GB Memory Stick and 2 PSP games (grand total: £675), has since done away with the launch prioritization -- though the bundle remains an option.

When questioned about the deal, competing UK retailers expressed no desire to create similar bundles. Martin Baxter, head of games at Choices UK, stated that, "We won't be following HMV's lead on the PSP pre-order bundle, because we won't hold our customers to ransom."

Virgin Megastores' Stephen Lynn was a bit more subtle, explaining their decision to "keep things simple" and and to avoid "confusing our customers over any product - let alone one of this expense." The offer, e-mailed to registered HMV customers, is open to the first 5,000 customers willing to pay £675 (a whopping $1328) for the bundle, which also includes two PSP games and a 4GB memory stick.

Forced bundles for new systems are of course nothing new, but this is the first one we've seen that forces you to pick up a whole 'nother system just to get the latest hardware. The bundle won't actually save you any money over buying all the parts separately, but it does ensure that HMV will "ship your PlayStation 3 to you from our warehouse as soon as we receive consoles from Sony."

But what about potential PS3 buyers who already have a PSP? As a Sony spokesman told GI.biz, "consumers are free to shop around to find a package that best suits their own needs, and offers the greatest value for money." That'll teach you to be an early adopter!

Retailers are starting to toss in conditional pre-order ultimatums. They taunt you with the promise of a PS3 pre-order, but wring your neck and shout into your ear in a comical fashion (if you're on the outside of the conflict) "you want PS3? You buy PSP too! Now price come to GPB 675!" What retailer would do such a thing? Apparently, it's the online store for HMV. Along with the 4GB PSP model, you'd also score two games for the handheld: Killzone Liberation and Gangs of London.

The America's launch saw similar packages -- multiple games, mostly. However, while getting a PSP with the PS3 may seem like a horrible theft of your wallet's livelihood, remember that the two systems work in tandem. You can get a lot out of utilizing both. We're not saying to "go for the package deal!" but... if you've wanted a PSP, this is an opportune time to score both items, along with two of the better PSP titles. Of course, GPB 675 is a very large wad of cash, so this is certainly aimed at the hardest of the core. Well guys, think about it, let us know what you think and realize that there are many other retailers to visit if this doesn't settle well with you (and it should appeal to an elite few, honestly).

[via GamesIndustry.biz]
European retailer taking PS3 pre-orders, but you have to buy a PSP too originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 03 Feb 2007 10:00:00 EST. He notes that Nintendo is very confident about the Wii's launch and predicts nothing but a huge success -- a prediction very much backed up by the gigantic lines that formed at the UK's HMV store in Oxford Street yesterday. The crowd even had to be broken up and asked to return at a later stage, though not before being given several (likely sturdy) wristbands.

Speaking to Gamesindustry.biz, Tim Ellis, head of games at HMV, says that demand is most certainly exceeding supply and that the retailer could easily have "sold many more times than we've got, to be honest." Despite the presence of orderly lines and a lack of violent, Wii-related crimes (so far), he goes on to label the launch as "bedlam." Not to worry, Nintendo promises more stock is on the way and aims to satisfy everyone that wants a Wii this Christmas. That would be everyone, then.
Wii launches in Europe, loads of people buy it originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 08 Dec 2006 06:45:00 EST.
