He who is <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/michael-pachter">Pachter</a> predicted the console would <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/05/wii-sales-up-100-over-christmas-says-pachter/">clear the 3 million mark</a>, only for the platform to fall short by 850,000 units.<br /><br />Why the lower-than-expected sales? As usual, analysts reckon they have the answer: more of those accursed hardware shortages. EEDAR's Jesse Divnich and Deutsche Bank analyst Jeetil Patel both believe demand outweighed supply for the third December running, with Divnich stating the Wii would have sold "north of 4 million units" if more consoles had been produced in time.<br /><br /><em>Phew</em>, panic over! Wii's not the next N-Gage or anything!<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/17/december-wii-sales-held-back-by-supply-shortages/">Joystiq</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/18/hardware-shortages-blamed-for-wiis-underwhelming-december/">Hardware shortages blamed for Wii's underwhelming December</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 18 Jan 2009 13:00:00 EST. Microsoft has deemed its European <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/20/xbox-360-sells-over-7-million-in-europe/">holiday onslaught</a> a success, with Chart-Track data reportedly showing <a href="http://www.developmag.com/press-releases/43331/XBOX-360trade-RECORDS-BEST-EUROPEAN-CHRISTMAS-IN-ITS-HISTORY-EIGHT-MILLION-CONSOLES-SOLD-TO-DATE">Xbox 360 sales "almost" doubling</a> when compared to the same period in 2007. This made the Xbox 360 the fastest-growing system of 2008, leaving it in a prime spot for further 2009 traction, says Chris Lewis, Regional Vice President of Microsoft's Interactive Entertainment Business for the EMEA region.<br /><br />"Christmas 2008 was a resounding success for Xbox 360. 2008 saw us grow faster than any of our competitors and we over-achieved in sales during the crucial Christmas selling period," said Lewis. "With eight million consoles sold since we launched, and consistently out-selling PlayStation 3 in EMEA, we're poised to build on this success in 2009." Microsoft claims to have over a one-million unit lead over the PlayStation 3 in the EMEA region, which includes Europe, the Middle East and Africa.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/05/xbox-360-over-achieved-in-euro-christmas-sales/">Xbox 360 'over-achieved' in Euro Christmas sales</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 05 Jan 2009 15:45:00 EST. Of course you do, who doesn't? Well, it would appear the torch has been passed on to a small Canadian child, who is a bottomless well of excitement upon receiving a certain gift this Christmas. We won't ruin the surprise (you probably already guessed, anyway), so just head past the break and watch the video. Oh, and if you need a refresher on the N64 kid, hit up the video above.<br /><br /><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/02/canadian-receives-spirit-of-n64-kid-for-christmas/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Canadian receives spirit of N64 kid for Christmas</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/02/canadian-receives-spirit-of-n64-kid-for-christmas/">Canadian receives spirit of N64 kid for Christmas</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 02 Jan 2009 14:37:00 EST. <strong>[We've got our winner! Larry, aka Freak Mojo, wins the PS3 treats! Thanks for entering, everyone!]</strong><br /><br />Just like you, we get all sorts of gifts around the holidays here at Joystiq HQ. Probably unlike you, we don't keep any of them (even the good ones!). With that in mind, we've got five days of regift giveaways planned, where you get some free stuff (and we get some of our HQ real estate back).<br /> <br />Today, we're offering up the PlayStation 3 Wireless Keypad (our two word review: pretty terrible) and, since you need to charge the thing separately from your controller (no, really!) we're throwing in the PlayStation 3 AC Adaptor. We're still waiting for Sony to implement some sort of low-power charging solution in a future PS3 revision - until then, we'll keep charging everything off the 360.<br /><br />Here's how you win:
<ul>
    <li>Leave a comment expressing your holiday cheer ... in txtspk.<br /></li>
    <li>You must be 18 years or older and a resident of the US or Canada (excluding Quebec)<br /></li>
    <li><strong>Limit 1 entry per person</strong></li>
    <li>This entry period ends at <strong>8:30 pm ET on Wednesday, December 31st</strong>. We'll randomly select 1 winner at that time to receive the PlayStation 3 Wireless Keypad (ARV: $50) and the PlayStation 3 AC Adaptor (ARV: $25.00). Please check your e-mail!</li>

Steam is having a rather tantalizing <a href="http://store.steampowered.com/holidaysale/">holiday sale</a> from now until January 2, with everything in the store 10% to 75% off. In case you missed it the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/13/team-fortress-2-is-10-this-weekend-on-steam/ ">first time</a>, <em>Team Fortress 2</em> is back down to $10. We recommend picking up <em>BioShock </em>if you've never played it, now only $5. The Valve Complete package is 25% off, now only $75, and the id Super Pack -- which nets you every single id title before <em>Quake Wars</em> -- is just $35. Our holiday money is officially spoken for.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/26/steams-holiday-sale-boasts-10-75-off-everything/">Steam's holiday sale boasts 10-75% off everything</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 26 Dec 2008 17:30:00 EST. Today is what's known as <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boxing_day">Boxing Day</a> in some parts of the world. This means that some retailers will be discounting goods. In Canada, such retailers offering big sales include:<br />
<ul>
    <li><a href="http://boxingday.redflagdeals.com/index.php/flyers/image_full/205/">Best Buy</a></li>
    <li><a href="http://boxingday.redflagdeals.com/index.php/flyers/image_full/108/">Future Shop</a></li>
    <li><a href="http://boxingday.redflagdeals.com/index.php/flyers/image_full/65/">Walmart</a></li>
    <li><a href="http://www.redflagdeals.com/deals/main.php/boxingday/toysrus/">Toys R Us</a></li>
    <li><a href="http://boxingday.redflagdeals.com/index.php/flyers/image_full/844/">HMV</a> (Thanks, Tom)</li>
</ul>
Hit up those links to check out what deals they're running. Additionally, you can also cruise past the break for a list of the deals offered by Amazon Canada.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/26/boxing-day-deals-for-canadians/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Boxing Day deals for Canadians</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/26/boxing-day-deals-for-canadians/">Boxing Day deals for Canadians</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 26 Dec 2008 12:00:00 EST. With this being Christmas Eve and all, it's the last shopping day before Santa comes shuffling down that chimney. So, do you have to pick up any last-minute gifts? If not, did you pick up any gaming gifts this year? Wii stuff? If you're smart enough to click and watch the video we've embedded for you just after the jump, you're going to doubt us at first. "I don't even see how this is video game related!" you'll think. "You're slipping in your old age, Joystiq." While it's true that we are, we implore you to hang in there until the end.<br /><br />Congratulations to "aplusjimages" for providing us with the most upsetting, <strong>NSFW</strong> imagery of the yuletide. By the way, we take back everything we've ever said about violent video games being harmless.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://xybapodcast.blogspot.com/2008/12/gears-of-war-x-mas.html">XBYA Podcast</a>]<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/23/a-very-gears-of-war-christmas/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>A Very Gears of War Christmas</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/23/a-very-gears-of-war-christmas/">A Very Gears of War Christmas</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 23 Dec 2008 11:20:00 EST. Oh, hello friends! Please, come in, we've been waiting for you. Here, let us get your coat. Dear, look at you, you're frozen! Why don't you come over here and stand by the fire. ... Go on, it's really warm. ... Oh, buttons! You've figured us out! It's not really a fireplace at all, but rather a fake fireplace created in XNA for download on Xbox Live. Sorry, we just couldn't resist a little yuletide chicanery.<br /><br />... What? ... Oh, umm, 400 points. So -- so basically, yeah, five dollars. Huh? Oh, yes, we can watch the video after the break for free. ... No, you're right. That's probably ... no, you don't need to apologize. We're disappointed in us too.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/22/warm-yourself-by-the-xbox-live-fireplace/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Warm yourself by the Xbox Live fireplace</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/22/warm-yourself-by-the-xbox-live-fireplace/">Warm yourself by the Xbox Live fireplace</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 22 Dec 2008 10:25:00 EST. Sometimes, it's just hard not to love Amazon. The website has already helped us avoid the (sometimes deadly) hassle of holiday shopping. Nearly all our holiday gift purchases have been made online this year, which is great and in no way increases a blogger's natural predilection for agoraphobia. And now, today only, Amazon is offering <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/prince-of-persia"><em>Prince of Persia</em></a> for a mere <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Prince-Persia-Xbox-360/dp/B001ASJISG/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=videogames&amp;qid=1229526495&amp;sr=8-1">$39.98</a>. That's $20 off the most "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/03/metareview-prince-of-persia-pc-ps3-360/">magical</a>" game you'll play this year. Oh Amazon, you shouldn't have. We didn't give you anything. Oh, right, except the money.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/17/prince-of-persia-only-40-today-on-amazon/">Joystiq</a>. Right now the store is offering both a 720p Samsung 42" plasma HDTV and an Xbox 360 for $899.98. If you'd prefer an LCD screen, is offering the same deal for an Xbox 360 and a Samsung 720p 37" LCD HDTV, which also runs $899. The plasma and LCD TVs typically run for $1,300 and $1,200, respectively, so the offer translates to a <em>free</em> Xbox 360 Pro either way (with an extra $100 off the plasma TV to boot). The Xbox 360 is part of the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/09/ms-announces-holiday-bundles-free-netflix-trial/">new holiday bundle</a>, so you'll score free copies of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/27/lego-indiana-jones-demo-now-on-xblm/"><em>LEGO Indiana Jones</em></a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/01/kung-fu-panda-demo-crane-kicks-the-xblm/"><em>Kung Fu Panda</em></a> too.<br /><br />Granted, you'll have to give up your 1080p dreams, but it's still a mighty impressive deal.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://news.punchjump.com/article.php?id=7180">Punch Jump</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/16/best-buy-xbox-360-pro-and-42-hdtv-for-899/">Best Buy: Xbox 360 Pro and 42" HDTV for $899</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 16 Dec 2008 17:15:00 EST. <strong>Update:</strong> We've selected a winner! Congratulations to Joshua Bowles of Tempe, AZ.<br /><br />Let's face it. If there's anything you've ever needed to hear on the Xbox 360, it's the sound of zombies creeping up behind you. If you haven't played <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/left-4-dead"><em>Left 4 Dead</em></a>, then you don't know about all of the creepy sounds: the gurgling of a Boomer, the wail of a Witch and the raspy sounds of a Smoker. It's all part of the game, and paying close attention can keep you alive. For awhile.<br /><br />If you're tired of your roommates, significant other or neighbors telling you to dial down the sound on your gaming rig, then you definitely need some high-quality cans that will keep you blissfully unaware while the rest of the world goes about its business. With that in mind, you need to get in on our <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/joyswag-holidaze-2008/">Joyswag Holidaze</a> <em>Left 4 Dead</em> and Turtle Beach Ear Force X3 <em>wireless</em> gaming headphones (with microphone!) giveaway:<br />
<ul>
    <li>Leave a comment telling us why you need a pair of gaming headphones to help you kill zombies<br /></li>
    <li>You must be 18 years or older and a resident of the US or Canada (excluding Quebec)<br /></li>
    <li><strong>Limit 1 entry per person per calendar day</strong><strong><br /></strong></li>
    <li>This entry period ends at <strong>12:00pm ET on Wednesday, December 17th</strong>. We'll randomly select 1 winner at that time to receive one copy of <span style="font-style: italic;">Left 4 Dead </span>for Xbox 360 (ARV: $59.99), one pair of Turtle Beach X3 Headphones for the Xbox 360 (<span style="font-style: italic;"></span>ARV: $119.99)<br /></li>

<strong>Update:</strong> We've selected a winner! Congratulations to Liana Engie of Claremont, CA.<br /><br />A few weeks back we attended Insomniac Games' <em>Resistance 2</em> open house in Los Angeles, where the developer literally opened its doors and let fans stream in to find out how the game was created. Insomniac showed films, talked gun design, and even fed everyone massive stacks of pizza. Pretty darned <strike>costly</strike> impressive. Can you imagine opening your doors to hordes of unwashed gamers?<br /><br />For Day 2 of the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/joyswag-holidaze-2008/">Joyswag Holidaze</a>, we're giving away the Collector's Edition of <em>Resistance 2</em>, a <em>Resistance 2</em> development team t-shirt (size large), and a <em>Resistance 2</em> poster that's been signed by the entire development team. <br /><br />To enter the giveaway:<br />

Well now, who could've expected this? Surely not us! We're not being sarcastic <em>at all</em>. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/walmart">Walmart</a> promotes <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/08/looking-for-a-wii-try-walmart-com/">a healthy supply of Wii</a> stock and, sure enough, the retail giant has sold a lot of consoles. Tens of thousands by Monday afternoon, in fact.<br /><br />Spokesperson Ravi Jariwala said the company saw a "very strong response to the additional inventory" that Walmart sold online and that they blew through stock ranging in the "tens of thousands" by "early Monday afternoon." What's surprising, though, is that despite selling all of those consoles, they're still in stock on the retailer's site. If that sounds like something you'd be interested in, then <a href="http://www.walmart.com/catalog/catalog.gsp?cat=1029739&amp;povid=cat14503-env172199-module210489-lLink1">hit up this linkage</a>. Or, you know, just bash Walmart in the comments.<br /><br /><font color="red">Update:</font> Looks like the consoles are out of stock now. Bummer.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=21438">Gamasutra</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/09/surprise-walmart-sold-a-lot-of-wii-consoles-yesterday/">Surprise! Following up on last week's discounted Legendary Map Pack for <em>Halo 3</em>, <a href="http://majornelson.com/archive/2008/12/09/deals-of-the-week-are-now-on-sale.aspx">Major Nelson</a> recently announced the latest Xbox Live Marketplace "Holiday Deal of the Week". For the next seven days, you can pick up one of the best pieces of <em>Rock Band</em> DLC to drop this year (in our most humble, Grohl-worshiping opinion) on the <em>cheap</em>. The full Foo Fighters album, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/06/rock-band-weekly-foo-fighters-album-harmonix-announces-track-p/"><em>The Colour and the Shape</em></a>, is on sale for 1200<img border="0" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.xbox360fanboy.com/media/2007/11/microsoftpointslogosmall.gif" alt="" /> ($15), a discount of 400<img border="0" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.xbox360fanboy.com/media/2007/11/microsoftpointslogosmall.gif" alt="" /> ($5).<br /><br />Asian Xbox Live territories have their own unique discounts this week -- Japan's popular rhythm title <em>The iDOLM@STER: Live For You</em> knocked a few points off the price of one of its songs, while Hong Kong, Korea and Taiwan can pick up the <em>Guitar Hero III </em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/08/velvet-revolver-foo-fighter-guitar-hero-iii-track-packs-hit-xbo/">Foo Fighters Track Pack</a> for 375<img border="0" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.xbox360fanboy.com/media/2007/11/microsoftpointslogosmall.gif" alt="" />. It's a global Foo-nomenon!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/09/holiday-deal-of-the-week-foos-colour-and-the-shape-rock-band/">XBLM Deal of the Week: Foo's 'Colour and the Shape' Rock Band DLC </a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 09 Dec 2008 13:20:00 EST. Microsoft has announced a special deal for the holidays. In addition to the XBLM Deal of the Week -- the Legendary Map Pack is still <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/01/xblm-holiday-deal-of-the-week-legendary-map-pack-for-400-points/">on sale</a> for Gold members, by the way -- Microsoft is also running the <a href="http://gamerscoreblog.com/press/archive/2008/12/04/562615.aspx">Friendship is Free promotion</a>. Until the end of December, a select group of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/xbla/">Xbox Live Arcade</a> games will not require a Gold membership for online play. In other words, Silver members will be able to try online play in these games for free. The Friendship is Free promotion is active right now for the following Xbox Live Arcade games:<br />

The results of the first-ever Xbox 360 Hispanic Holiday Entertainment Survey are in! And wouldn't you know, Xbox 360 is the <em>perfect</em> fit for the Hispanic persuasion<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/03/holiday-profiling-xbox-360-is-perfect-gift-for-hispanics-micro/#footnote">1</a>. Did you know: <br />
<ul>
    <li>More Hispanics want a gift that brings their family together (89% vs. 64% of general population) </li>
    <li>More Hispanics are looking for gifts that people can enjoy throughout the year (95% vs. 85% of general population) </li>
    <li>More Hispanics are looking for affordable ways to entertain their family over the holidays (85% vs. 81% of general population) </li>
    <li>Many more Hispanics would rather buy one gift for their whole family than spend money on lots of individual gifts (83 % vs. 52% of general population)</li>
    <li><em>Lips en Espa&ntilde;ol</em> features 17 songs in Spanish by artists such as Alejandro Sanz, Belanova, Fanny Lu, La Factoria, Luis Miguel, Pimpinela and Selena (42.5% less songs than the all-English version!)<br /></li>
</ul>
How do these compelling figures all add up? We're glad you asked! You see, Xbox 360 is the <em><u>one</u>, <u>affordable</u></em> gift that <em><u>brings the family together</u> <u>throughout the year</u>.</em> In short, <em>not</em> buying an Xbox 360 this holiday season is simply Un-Hispanic.<small></small><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/03/holiday-profiling-xbox-360-is-perfect-gift-for-hispanics-micro/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Holiday profiling: Xbox 360 is perfect gift for Hispanics, Microsoft survey finds</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/03/holiday-profiling-xbox-360-is-perfect-gift-for-hispanics-micro/">Holiday profiling: Xbox 360 is perfect gift for Hispanics, Microsoft survey finds</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 03 Dec 2008 16:00:00 EST. Cowen Group analyst Doug Creutz knows the public and, according to him, they want <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/guitar-hero-world-tour/"><em>Guitar Hero: World Tour</em></a>. Even though the guitar bundle for the game has been <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/02/another-shot-at-cheap-guitar-hero-world-tour/">discounted</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/25/be-a-guitar-hero-for-59-this-black-friday/">like</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/20/a-cheap-way-to-get-into-multiplayer-guitar-heroics/">crazy</a> over the last week (and selling just as crazy, we assume), he says that most folks are looking for the full band kit, which is difficult to find on store shelves.<br /><br />"Supply of the full band kit version at all retail locations was very tight, with the title selling out quickly," Creutz said, even pointing to online resellers <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/21/resellers-taking-advantage-of-world-tour-shortages/">who continue to resell the full band kit SKU</a> for ridiculous sums of money. "This picture of high demand and tight supply remains consistent with our previous channel checks."<br /><br />If these supplies were higher, Activision would be making a lot more money off the title. As it is, however, the company must mostly rely on sales of the game itself and the other guitar bundle SKU.<br /><br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/02/analyst-world-tour-demand-still-high-supplies-still-down/">Analyst: World Tour demand still high, supplies still down</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 02 Dec 2008 17:27:00 EST. Black Friday 2008 will be <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601087&amp;sid=aLqPiB6k_l6U&amp;refer=home">remembered</a> as a slight, but pleasant bump in a rocky road for retail this holiday. Fitting, then, that Wii and its equally scarce sidekick, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/wii-fit/"><em>Wii Fit</em></a>, were the <a href="http://news.cnet.com/8301-1001_3-10109931-92.html?tag=rtcol;pop">top search</a> items on the day. As it turns out, folks wanted to shop (172 million to be exact!), they just couldn't always buy what they were searching for. With Wii in short supply at retail, eBay merchants continued to turn profits on resales of the console with an average selling price of $349. Overall, online shopping <a href="http://www.comscore.com/press/release.asp?press=2604">totals</a> grew modestly relative to last year.<br /> <br />Meanwhile, a stack of Xbox 360s caused a <a href="http://www.xbox360fanboy.com/2008/11/29/video-black-friday-shoppers-brawl-over-last-360/">brawl</a> at Walmart, and, in a macabre turn of events, an employee was <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2008/11/29/business/29walmart.html?scp=1&amp;sq=walmart&amp;st=cse">trampled</a> to death by a frenzied mob at the Green Acres Mall in Valley Stream, New York. In California, two men killed each other in a <a href="http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-toysrus30-2008nov30,0,71300.story">gunfight</a> that erupted at the Palm Desert Toys R Us. Remember that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/25/nintendo-fighting-cancer-with-new-pink-ribbon-lite/">Pink Ribbon DS Lite</a> that Nintendo unveiled a few months back? Well, Amazon is offering that DS Lite model for the reduced price of $99.95, as part of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/30/amazons-2008-cyber-monday-deals/">its Cyber Monday sales event</a>. It's like <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/black-friday">Black Friday</a>, except you can shop without your pants on.<br /><br />What else is up for grabs? Nothing really for the DS lovers out there, but if you are looking to upgrade to a DS Lite or introduce someone else to the wonders of Nintendo's handheld, there are plenty of other deals going on around the net. We suggest you hit up Joystiq's deal guide right <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/holidaze-2008">here</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/01/99-ds-lite-kicks-off-amazons-cyber-monday/">$99 DS Lite kicks off Amazon's Cyber Monday</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 01 Dec 2008 14:36:00 EST. In case your wallet isn't hurting enough from this weekend (or you simply decided to take the frugal route with Black Friday shopping), Amazon has unveiled their Cyber Monday deals, which starts tomorrow at 3:00AM ET. While no way as exhaustive as <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/27/amazons-incredible-black-friday-deals-and-newegg-too/">its weekend specials</a> (which, like the new deals, last until Tuesday, December 2 at 2:59AM ET), there are a few steep discounts worth noting. <span style="font-style: italic;">Fable 2 </span>and <span style="font-style: italic;">LittleBigPlanet</span> are $40 each, and <span style="font-style: italic;">Spore </span>is being offered for only $20. <br /><br />We've posted the full list after the break. Be sure to also keep an eye on GameStop, who has its own specials starting at midnight ET tonight.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/30/amazons-2008-cyber-monday-deals/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Amazon's 2008 Cyber Monday deals</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/30/amazons-2008-cyber-monday-deals/">Amazon's 2008 Cyber Monday deals</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 30 Nov 2008 20:00:00 EST. <div align="left">Today marks the final day of our four-part <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/holiday-game-rating-guide/">Holiday Game and Rating Guide</a>, co-developed by parent-focused site What They Play. In today's list we recommend five must own titles rated "M" for "Mature." Jump in for chainsaws and zombies and find out what you should be asking for this holiday season.<br /><br />Developed by X3F and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/What-They-Play/">What They Play</a> president John Davison -- you may also know him from the 1UP Yours Podcast -- the Holiday Game and Rating Guide hopes to showcase the best of each rating while helping to inform your loved ones what kind of content each game includes. It isn't meant to scare them away, in fact think of it as a walk through of what's really found in each game to help everyone make an intelligent decision this holiday season.<br /> <br />

Blu-ray lovers aren't left out in the cold either, for they have two separate Blu-ray deals going on. The first one is a pre-Black Friday sale on about 128 Sony titles. Many of them are already under $20, but if you buy 4 of them, you get an additional 15% off. If you buy 7, you get another 20% off. If you buy 10 or more, it is 25% off the total. Deal is only valid today and tomorrow. <strike>Check out their selection <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&amp;location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fgp%2Ffeature.html%3Fie%3DUTF8%26docId%3D1000309291%26pf%5Frd%5Fm%3DATVPDKIKX0DER%26pf%5Frd%5Fs%3Dright-blog-0%26pf%5Frd%5Fr%3D1FREVQZFWGED9KMFMFXR%26pf%5Frd%5Ft%3D101%26pf%5Frd%5Fp%3D464144911%26pf%5Frd%5Fi%3D193640011&amp;tag=psfa-20&amp;linkCode=ur2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325">here</a>. </strike>(Sorry, this deal is over!) Knowing that we would prefer <span style="font-style: italic;">not</span> to get off the couch (especially with temperatures dropping as they are wont to do this time of year), Newegg and Amazon are celebrating Black Friday with their own super deals. <a href="http://www.newegg.com/DailyDeal.aspx?page=1">Newegg's deals </a>(effective now through Sunday, November 30) are predominantly PC-centric, but console gamers can still enjoy $20 off <span style="font-style: italic;">Metal Gear Solid 4.</span> <br /><br />Amazon's deals, however, are absolutely irresistible. <span style="font-style: italic;">Far Cry 2</span> for $38? <span style="font-style: italic;">Dead Space</span> for $30? <span style="font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;">Left 4 Dead</span><span style="font-weight: bold;"> PC for $20?</span>! <span style="font-style: italic;"></span>There are plenty more; we suggest you get cozy and have your credit card handy tonight.<br /><br />Full list after the break. Amazon's deals begin Friday, November 28 at 3:00AM ET. The <font color="red"><strong>Friday Only</strong></font> deals (designated as such) end 2:59AM ET Saturday morning (or until supplies run out, <span style="font-style: italic;">natch</span>), while the remaining discounts end 2:59AM ET Sunday morning. <img src="file:///Users/Rosco/Library/Caches/TemporaryItems/moz-screenshot.jpg" alt="" /><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/27/amazons-incredible-black-friday-deals-and-newegg-too/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Stay at home: Amazon's incredible Black Friday deals (and Newegg, too)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/27/amazons-incredible-black-friday-deals-and-newegg-too/">Stay at home: Amazon's incredible Black Friday deals (and Newegg, too)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 27 Nov 2008 17:00:00 EST. Bad news, everybody: 2008 is the new 2007. Those of us lucky enough to have survived last year's unyielding flood of exquisite games expected the new holiday to provide some respite -- perhaps an influx of blessedly mediocre games -- but alas, our wallets are <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/holidaze-2008">once again tugged</a> in every $60 direction.<br />
<br />
But what's worse? The deafening din of desirable games, or that irresistible impulse to play and master every adventure the very second it becomes available? Provided you can defeat the latter reflex, we have a simple suggestion: Live in the past. It's cheaper!<br />
<br />
We've dredged up our decisive, if ever-so-slightly controversial list of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/01/joystiqs-top-10-games-of-2007/">the ten best games of Oh Seven</a>, hoping you'll find a fantastic experience you mistakenly overlooked. You'll find that the passage of time has taken a pleasing toll on the recommended price of admission. In fact, we've traveled forward in time to this very moment, hoping to pick up our 2007 nominees on the cheap. What do you think? <br />
<span style="font-weight: bold;">What we said then:</span> "Perhaps the most surprising thing about the game is how few actual revolutionary concepts are contained within. It selects existing game design tools, hones them to practical perfection and creates what is, in our opinion, the military shooter against which all others must be judged."<br />
<br />
<span style="font-weight: bold;">What we say now:</span> "An essential 'tunnel of fun' shooter with a rewarding multiplayer component. If you find yourself disappointed by this year's <span style="font-style: italic;">Call of Duty: World at War</span>, it's probably this game's fault."<br />
<br />

<div style="text-align: left;">With <em>almost</em> all of the big games of '08 now on shelves (we're looking at you, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/prince-of-persia"><em>Prince of Persia</em></a>) or available via Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network, you're left with a lot of choices. Some of them you've already bought; others you've been on the fence over; others you didn't realize were "supposed to be" any good - but, if you're anything like us, you don't want to miss <em>any </em>of the must-plays this year has to offer.<br /><br />Enter our "meta-metareview," a list of every game released this year that's scored above 85% on average from reviewers around the world. You won't be surprised by the games that made the list; you will be surprised that some of your (and our) favorites didn't make it. Check out the full list after the break and please, before you send us a nasty email because <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/castle-crashers">Castle Crashers</a> </em>didn't make it on, remember that them's the (sometimes painful) breaks with aggregate scoring.<br /><br />Some fun facts:<br />
<ul>
    <li>October was the most crowded month for quality titles with <span style="font-weight: bold;">12</span> released, followed by November <span style="font-weight: bold;">(8)</span>, September <span style="font-weight: bold;">(7)</span> and April <span style="font-weight: bold;">(6)</span>.</li>
    <li>Breaking it down by console, PlayStation 3 has the most presence on the list with <span style="font-weight: bold;">22</span> titles, followed by Xbox 360 <span style="font-weight: bold;">(20)</span>, PC <span style="font-weight: bold;">(15)</span>, Wii <span style="font-weight: bold;">(8)</span>, DS <span style="font-weight: bold;">(7)</span>, PSP <span style="font-weight: bold;">(2)</span> and PS2 <span style="font-weight: bold;">(1)</span>.</li>
    <li>The best-reviewed game this year? April's <span style="font-style: italic;">Grand Theft Auto IV </span><span style="font-weight: bold;">(98%)</span>, followed by a three-way tie between <span style="font-style: italic;">LittleBigPlanet, BioShock</span> (PS3) and <span style="font-style: italic;">World of Goo</span> <span style="font-weight: bold;">(95%)</span> -- all three of which were released in October. <span style="font-style: italic;">Metal Gear Solid 4 </span>and <span style="font-style: italic;">Wrath of the Lich King</span> are the next tier below at <span style="font-weight: bold;">94%</span>.</li>
    <li>Of the 55 titles listed, <span style="font-weight: bold;">12</span> (or approximately 22%) were not based on an existing franchise: <span style="font-style: italic;">Sins of a Solar Empire, Patapon, Professor Layton and the Curious Village, Braid, The World Ends with You, Boom Blox, World of Goo, GRID, Pure, LittleBigPlanet, Dead Space </span>and<span style="font-style: italic;"> Valkyria Chronicles</span>.</li>

It's not just your <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/24/black-friday-video-game-guide-2008/">friendly neighborhood retailers</a> looking to take advantage of your <span style="text-decoration: line-through;">weekend</span> <span style="font-style: italic;">weakened</span> state of mind this Friday. No, online marketplaces are looking to snag your credit card digits, too, as you sit slumped before your computer screen after awakening from a paralyzing food coma with an insatiable appetite to ... <em>BUY!</em><br /> <br />Microsoft's Major Nelson has posted the Black Friday discounts for Xbox Live Marketplace, available to Xbox Live Gold members "Friday morning" through "Sunday evening" (an originally stated start time of 6 am ET has been removed). The sale includes Xbox Live Arcade games, premium DLC and several NXE Themes. Full details are posted after the break.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/26/xbox-live-marketplace-black-friday-sale/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Xbox Live Marketplace Black Friday sale</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/26/xbox-live-marketplace-black-friday-sale/">Xbox Live Marketplace Black Friday sale</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 26 Nov 2008 14:45:00 EST.
