Sega targets 16-bit superfans with two new character-themed upgrade packs for the <a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/house-dead-overkill-lost-reels/id619501403?mt=8">iOS</a> and <a href="https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sega.hodoklr">Android</a> versions of its first-person zombie shooter <i>The House of the Dead: Overkill - The Lost Reels</i>.<br />
<br />
The <a href="http://blogs.sega.com/2013/04/30/unlock-shinobi-in-house-of-the-dead-overkill-the-lost-reels/">Ninja Star pack</a> replaces the game's standard Colt gun with an unlimited supply of shuriken, resulting in gameplay that resembles an extended bonus stage from the 1987 <i>Shinobi</i> arcade game. The <a href="http://blogs.sega.com/2013/05/03/play-as-vectorman-in-house-of-the-dead-overkill-the-lost-reels/">Vectorman's Ball Gun</a> upgrade, on the other hand, switches out the minigun for Vectorman's lime-green weaponry, and adds Genesis-like particle effects to your zombie massacre.<br />
<br />
While <i>Shinobi</i>'s protagonist Joe Musashi has made scattered showings in Sega-published games over the years (including a cameo as an unlockable character in 2011's 3DS title <i>Shinobi</i>), these upgrades mark a rare appearance for Vectorman. Fans of Sega's prerendered robotic hero had their hearts broken in 2003 following the cancellation of a <a href="http://www.unseen64.net/2008/04/15/vectorman-ps2-cancelled/">planned <i>Vectorman</i> reboot</a> for the PlayStation 2, and the franchise has remained dormant since.<br />
<br />
Both items are available for purchase using in-game "Ka$h," which can be earned during gameplay or via microtransactions.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/04/shinobi-vectorman-join-mobile-house-of-the-dead-overkill-cast/">Shinobi, Vectorman join mobile House of the Dead: Overkill cast</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 04 May 2013 03:30:00 EST. Dubbed <em>House of the Dead: Overkill - The Lost Reels</em>, the universal iOS app is a remixed version of the 2009 Wii game broken down into three different "movies." An initial purchase unlocks the first movie and finishing that will unlock the second, with an in-app purchase of $2 required to access the final campaign.<br /><br />Controls are handled through three different methods. There's a virtual stick-and-reticle set-up and another using accelerometer controls, but the third option is most odd - a locked Frenzy Tap setting. <a href="http://toucharcade.com/2013/04/24/house-of-the-dead-overkill-the-lost-reels-segas-classic-arcade-shooter-comes-to-the-touchscreen/">Touch Arcade</a> has been playing the game today and says it hasn't figured out how to unlock that third option yet, or what exactly it is, but posits that it may be a tap-to-shoot style of play.<br /><br /><em>House of the Dead: Overkill - The Lost Reels</em> should be available after iTunes is updated tonight at 11 p.m. ET. The app is already live in the New Zealand territory and priced at $6.50 in New Zealand dollars, which comes out to about $5.50 here in the US.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/04/24/house-of-the-dead-overkill-lines-up-ios-in-its-crosshairs/">House of the Dead: Overkill brings its foul mouth to iOS</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 24 Apr 2013 18:45:00 EST. Sega posted a bit of an infodump to the <a href="http://blog.us.playstation.com/2011/07/14/the-house-of-the-dead-overkill-hunt-mutants-with-playstation-move-in-3d/">PlayStation Blog</a> about the upcoming 3D, HD <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/27/the-house-of-the-dead-overkill-extended-cut-brings-3d-cussin-t/"><em>House of the Dead: Overkill</em></a> port. The changes go beyond the graphics and the relative glowiness of the controller -- there's actually a list of alterations made to the "extended cut."<br />
<br />
Those changes include two new levels not found on Wii, a "new baby mutant type" and a new crossbow weapon. In addition, all of the boss fights have been "improved," and the "Mother" boss fight has been extended. Even the cutscenes have been redone with new motion capture.<br />
<br />
There are also a couple of new modes: "Hardcore Mode," which forces you to perform headshots to kill enemies, and "Classic Mode," which gives you only the AMS Magnum. <em>Overkill's</em> Extended Cut will reach into retail in North America on October 25.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/14/whats-been-extended-in-house-of-the-dead-overkills-extended-cu/">What's been extended in House of the Dead Overkill's Extended Cut</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 14 Jul 2011 17:30:00 EST. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/mafia-2"><em>Mafia 2</em></a>'s rap sheet now includes a Guinness World Record for "most swearing in a video game." The mob saga surpassed <em>House of the Dead: Overkill</em>'s <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/16/house-of-the-dead-overkill-has-most-swearing-ever/">189 permutations</a> on the word "f*ck" by ... well, they're still counting. Seriously.<br />
<br />
A representative for Guinness World Records tells Joystiq that at the moment the company has accepted that there are over 200 f-bombs in the game. He elaborated, "The number associated with the record is liable to change in the next few weeks, as 2K have promised to supply us with a copy of the game's full script under NDA so we can count the number of f-bombs ourselves and update the record with a complete figure." The company hopes to get the record into the <em>2011 Gamer's Edition</em> that will be available in January.<br />
<br />
The prolific profanities were first noticed by <a href="http://achievementhunter.com/archive/episode.php?id=1558">Achievement Hunter</a> and compiled into a video. Take a listen to the NSFW montage after the break.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/20/mafia-2-takes-guinness-f-bomb-record-hotd-overkill-effing-deth/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Mafia 2 takes Guinness f-bomb record; HotD: Overkill effing dethroned</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/20/mafia-2-takes-guinness-f-bomb-record-hotd-overkill-effing-deth/">Mafia 2 takes Guinness f-bomb record; HotD: Overkill effing dethroned</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 20 Sep 2010 17:00:00 EST. We were filled with a mix of two emotions upon seeing that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/house-of-the-dead-overkill"><em>House of the Dead: Overkill</em></a> is now <a href="http://www.amazon.com/House-Dead-Overkill-Nintendo-Wii/dp/B001ET07O0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=videogames&amp;qid=1265288820&amp;sr=8-1">$12.99 on Amazon</a>. The first emotion was, of course, joy, because now more people can experience the total, unabashed <em>radicool</em> that drenches this funny, smartly designed on-rails shooter.<br />
<br />
The other emotion? Disgust that it had to come to this. This should be a collector's item that's impossible to find, not fodder for the bargain bin! All we're saying is this: We bought our copies here at Joystiq HQ. Did you buy yours, America? <br />
<br />
... Well? <em>Did you</em>?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/02/04/house-of-the-dead-overkill-far-too-cheap-on-amazon/">House of the Dead: Overkill far too cheap on Amazon</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 04 Feb 2010 11:30:00 EST. Sega gave it the old college try in 2009, reaching out to "mature" gamers with the likes of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/madworld"><em>MadWorld</em></a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/the-conduit"><em>The Conduit</em></a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/house-of-the-dead-overkill"><em>House of the Dead: Overkill</em></a>. But after none of those made much of an NPDent, it would seem the publisher may be abandoning the practice. While speaking on the performance of those games during the <a href="http://www.1up.com/do/minisite?cId=3176640">4 Guys 1UP</a> podcast, Sega of America studio director Constantine Hantzopoulos said, "That begets the question, you know, are we gonna do more mature titles for the Wii and it's like ... probably not." <br />
<br />
Hantzopoulos then pointed to the poor performance of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/dead-space-extraction"><em>Dead Space: Extraction</em></a> on the Wii, saying he had been using it as a litmus test for the potential of mature titles on the platform. In other news, Sega has apparently decided on "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/13/sega-giving-up-on-hardcore-wii-games-would-be-arrogant/">be a little more arrogant</a>" as its New Year's resolution.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/01/04/sega-probably-not-making-more-hardcore-wii-games/">Sega 'probably not' making more hardcore Wii games</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 04 Jan 2010 09:40:00 EST. This was hands-down the funniest game released in 2009, and 2009 was a year in which we got a new Tim Schafer game and the return of the Monkey Island series, so that's saying something. If you missed out, please go buy it, it's cheap as can be and a true delight.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/01/03/best-of-the-rest-justins-picks-of-2009/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Best of the Rest: Justin's Picks of 2009</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/01/03/best-of-the-rest-justins-picks-of-2009/">Best of the Rest: Justin's Picks of 2009</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 03 Jan 2010 11:30:00 EST. I mocked this "re-imagining" of <em>Silent Hill</em> when it was first announced. I thought Harry Mason had become an older, life-hewn Harry <em>Potter</em> and considered the town's frosty makeover as nothing short of sacrilege. But an encounter with the game at E3 2009 (and with candid producer <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/24/interview-silent-hill-shattered-memories-producer-tomm-hulett/">Tomm Hulett</a>) quickly changed my mind. While the game departs significantly from the franchise's known lore, it retains and streamlines much of what made <em>Silent Hill</em> stand out against games like <em>Resident Evil</em>. Encased in the game's frigid atmosphere, you'll experience a sense of bewilderment that, if you've been playing these games for a long time, you will not have felt in years. Indeed, the best surprises prey on those of us who think we know everything about <em>Silent Hill</em>.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/01/01/best-of-the-rest-ludwigs-picks-of-2009/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Best of the Rest: Ludwig's Picks of 2009</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/01/01/best-of-the-rest-ludwigs-picks-of-2009/">Best of the Rest: Ludwig's Picks of 2009</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 01 Jan 2010 19:15:00 EST. What started out as tepid fascination in <em>DJ Hero</em> quickly turned into a deep, passionate love. I initially thought it was just another rhythm game knock-off with an obtuse peripheral and a too-high price point. However, as my turntabling improved, my fondness for the game multiplied. Based on the game's lackluster sales, I'm guessing most people shared my outright hesitance -- but once you invest a bit of time and patience into <em>DJ Hero</em>, I guarantee you'll get hooked. (And <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/06/dj-heros-full-track-list-revealed/#continued">that soundtrack</a>! Sega's made some strides in trying to reach the Western market and its choice for the new head of Sega of America would seem to indicate the company wants to keep the progress going. Masanao Maeda will serve as the branch's new chief operating officer, Sega has <a href="http://forums.sega.com/showpost.php?p=5292621&amp;postcount=1">announced</a>.<br /> <br /> Though not a Bernie Stollar-level household name, Maeda has helped the company expand into the West from Sega's Japanese HQ, so it'll be interesting to see how effective he can be in the effort stateside. (Psst, Maeda: More <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/house-of-the-dead-overkill"><em>House of the Dead: Overkill</em></a>, please. For one thing, its other games are doing well, in his opinion. "We actually regard <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/05/sega-clarifies-first-week-sales-numbers-for-the-conduit/">The Conduit</a> </em>as a success," he said. "We shipped 300,000 units, sold through half of those and now it's at the point where it's selling consistently at a time when Wii sales are generally depressed in the marketplace."<br /><br />Despite somewhat disappointing sales Stateside, Hayes also told Wired that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/House-of-the-Dead-Overkill/"><em>The House of the Dead: Overkill</em></a> "did really well in Europe." As for <em>MadWorld</em>, Hayes doesn't think one game's failure is enough to close up shop on the Wii. We loved the mother[expletive deleted] [expletive deleted] out of Sega's recent mature pair of Wii titles, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/House-of-the-Dead-Overkill/">House of the Dead: Overkill</a></em> and <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/MadWorld/">MadWorld</a></em> -- unfortunately, the same can't be said for the game purchasing population of the world. The two games' sales <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/17/madworld-sells-66k-in-march-sega-oddly-pleased/">were far</a> <a href="http://nintendo.joystiq.com/2009/03/22/house-of-the-dead-overkill-sells-45k-in-february/">from stellar</a>, but Sega isn't ready to give up on developing family unfriendly titles for Nintendo's home console.<br /><br />In <a href="http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/sega-its-not-game-over-for-mature-wii-titles">a recent interview with GamesIndustry.biz</a>, Sega MD of European development, Gary Dunn, explained that the company's outlook on its two grown-up outings is far from grim -- he even claimed that "<em>House of the Dead: Overkill</em> was a profitable title." He went on to explain, "Whilst <em>MadWorld</em> commercially didn't sell what we were expecting I wouldn't say it's game over for mature Wii titles from Sega." Hopefully the company's persistence will be rewarded, if only to ensure a few dozen sequels to <em>Overkill</em>. (<em>Overkill 2: Superfluous Murder</em>, <em>Overkill 3: The Overkillinest</em>, etc.)<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/30/sega-considering-more-mature-wii-titles-says-overkill-was-prof/">Sega considering more mature Wii titles, says Overkill was 'profitable'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 30 Jun 2009 16:15:00 EST. Call us crazy, but we always thought that the idea behind making games was to sell <em>tons of copies</em>. Not so for Sega, as it seems weirdly satisfied with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/madworld"><em>MadWorld</em></a>'s lackluster sales, based on <a href="http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=23255">comments to Gamasutra</a>. Debuting early in March, Platinum Games' over-the-top brawler managed to move 66,000 copies, despite <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/13/metareview-madworld/">generally positive reviews</a>.<br /><br />Sega's other M-rated title on Wii, <a href="http://nintendo.joystiq.com/tag/house-of-the-dead-overkill/"><em>House of the Dead: Overkill</em></a>, also managed to have <a href="http://nintendo.joystiq.com/2009/03/22/house-of-the-dead-overkill-sells-45k-in-february/">a sub-par debut</a>, selling 45,000 copies during February. What does this say for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/the-conduit"><em>The Conduit</em></a>, the third of Sega's big games for Wii? Could Sega's gamble on the mature audience of Wii gamers been a poor move? All signs are pointing to "yes" right about now ... but Sega seems to disagree!<br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/17/madworld-sells-66k-in-march-sega-oddly-pleased/">MadWorld sells 66K in March, Sega oddly pleased</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 17 Apr 2009 11:50:00 EST. We've kind of assumed that Sega's double shot of M-rated offerings on the Wii underperformed, because ... well, because it's the Wii. But if Sega of America VP Sean Ratcliffe is to be believed, we might just have sneered at <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/madworld">MadWorld</a> </em>and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/house-of-the-dead-overkill"><em>House of the Dead: Overkill</em>'</a>s numbers too soon.<br /><br />Ratcliffe told <a href="http://venturebeat.com/2009/04/06/sega-shows-off-next-big-olympics-game-and-targets-wiidsi/">VentureBeat</a>, "<em>House of the Dead</em> has done very well and has absolutely met our expectations. The first set of data for <em>MadWorld</em> is very encouraging, as well." We know that <em>Overkill </em><a href="http://nintendo.joystiq.com/2009/03/22/house-of-the-dead-overkill-sells-45k-in-february/">only sold 45,000 units</a> in February, but if that's good enough for Sega, it's <em>just</em> enough to allow us to keep the hope of an <em>Overkill</em> sequel alive in our hearts without feeling like cockeyed optimists.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/07/sega-overkill-sales-met-expectations-madworlds-very-encour/">Sega: Overkill sales 'met expectations,' MadWorld's 'very encouraging'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 07 Apr 2009 10:00:00 EST. In regards to the core, Kaigler says that developing games for that audience is important for "everybody, the industry, certainly for Nintendo, but most of all, for consumers." She points to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/zelda-spirit-tracks"><em>Zelda: Spirit Tracks</em></a> as a game for that audience.<br /><br />Moving on to third-party support, we're starting to see more and more third parties recognize Nintendo's platforms. Kaigler says that being able to offer that 150 million user base between the two systems is very enticing to those developers. But, she notes that Nintendo wants to impart its own success on the platform and show these developers how it has achieved success (see: characters with floating, circular hands <em>in everything</em>), which might tie into those poor sales figures for the recent original, mature games <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/madworld"><em>MadWorld</em></a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/house-of-the-dead-overkill"><em>House of the Dead: Overkill</em></a>.<br /><br />Finally, no interview with a Nintendo exec can skip the company's latest handheld, the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/nintendo-dsi">Nintendo DSi</a>. Some folks (especially commenters on Joystiq) have felt the handheld doesn't improve enough over the DS Lite, especially for the price it's demanding. Kaigler, however, argues that the new handheld has plenty to offer, pointing out the DSi's popularity on Amazon and at GameStop through pre-order figures, as well as the one feature that we think too many people are overlooking: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/dsiware">DSiWare</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/06/nintendo-talks-core-third-parties-and-dsi/">Nintendo talks core, third parties, and DSi </a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 06 Apr 2009 13:30:00 EST. Sega's latest (on rails) shooter -- and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/16/house-of-the-dead-overkill-has-most-swearing-ever/">Guinness World Record</a> holder -- <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/House-of-the-Dead-Overkill/">The House of the Dead: Overkill</a></em> sold 45,000 units in February, landing itself 50th place in the month's top 100 titles sold. According to data from the NPD Group (Via <a href="http://www.edge-online.com/news/house-dead-overkill-sells-45k">Edge</a>), <em>Overkill</em> -- which released on February 10 -- joins other third-party Wii titles that have <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/12/is-the-wii-inhospitable-for-third-party-publishers/">failed to capture attention</a> at retail.<br /> <br /> Last year, Sega of America president Simon Jeffery said Western publishers have <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/06/sega-hardcore-gamers-shouldnt-be-excommunicated-from-wii/">ignored the hardcore market</a> focusing instead on family friendly titles, in line with the Wii's mainstream image. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Sega/">Sega</a> -- who recently released <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/MadWorld/">MadWorld</a></em> -- is prepping for a June release of <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/The-Conduit/">The Conduit</a></em>, continuing a string of Mature rated titles developed for the top-selling console. Hopefully, it will fare better on store shelves.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/22/house-of-the-dead-overkill-sells-45k-in-february/">House of the Dead: Overkill sells 45k in February</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 22 Mar 2009 11:00:00 EST. We all know how much swearing there is in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/house-of-the-dead-overkill/"><em>House of the Dead: Overkill</em></a>. There's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/16/house-of-the-dead-overkill-has-most-swearing-ever/">a world record-setting amount</a>. For some reason, though, the game has no warning about said language in its Australian classification of "<a href="http://www.classification.gov.au/special.html?n=46&amp;p=156&amp;sTitle=house+of+the+dead&amp;sMediaGames=1&amp;sDateFromM=1&amp;sDateFromY=1970&amp;sDateToM=3&amp;sDateToY=2009&amp;record=231326">MA15+ Strong Horror Violence</a>" -- and some people are <a href="http://www.news.com.au/technology/story/0,28348,25205417-5014239,00.html">understandably upset</a>. Do the people responsible for classifying games down under even play them?<br /><br />Pro Family Perspective director, Angela Conway, is <a href="http://www.gamepolitics.com/2009/03/19/australian-watchdog-group-slams-house-dead-overkill">leading the charge against Sega's game</a>, calling for research into the impact of violent video games on players. She says players will be affected by the amount of "sexually aggressive violence and aggressively violent language" found in the game. Wait, what? We think she got her adjectives mixed up. Shouldn't it be sexually aggressive language and aggressively violent violence? That doesn't sound right either ...<br /><br /><a href="http://www.news.com.au/technology/story/0,28348,25205417-5014239,00.html">Source</a> - <em>House of the Dead: Overkill </em>lacks language warning<br /><a href="http://www.gamepolitics.com/2009/03/19/australian-watchdog-group-slams-house-dead-overkill">Source</a> - Australian watchdog group protests <em>House of the Dead: Overkill</em> rating<br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/19/house-of-the-dead-overkill-stirs-up-trouble-down-under/">House of the Dead: Overkill stirs up trouble down under</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 19 Mar 2009 17:10:00 EST. Listen, we're for the advancement of realism and ethical dialogue in video games just as much as the next ludo-snob, but we can't help but miss the good old days when justice -- sweet, unwavering justice -- was dealt from the glassy tip of a Light Gun. Imagine our delight when we heard tell that Headstrong Games, developer of the <a href="http://nintendo.joystiq.com/2009/01/16/official-house-of-the-dead-hand-cannon-shoot-like-g-does/">overcompensating peripheral-packing</a> zombie shooter <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=House%20of%20the%20Dead%3A%20Overkill">House of the Dead: Overkill</a></em>, had expressed interest in revitalizing another of Sega's classic franchises: <em>Virtua Cop</em>.<br /><br />When pressed in <a href="http://www.cubed3.com/news/11716">a recent interview with Cubed3</a>, <em>Overkill</em> producer Neil McEwen explained that Headstrong Games would "love to do <em>Virtua Cop</em> or another light gun game for Sega." According to McEwen, the collaboration began when Sega approached the developer with the hopes of working together on one of Sega's franchises. They ultimately settled on <em>House of the Dead</em>, but should the relationship continue, we might just see the return of everyone's favorite destruction-prone pair of virtual flatfeet.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/18/house-of-the-dead-overkill-devs-interested-in-making-new-virtua/">House of the Dead: Overkill devs interested in making new Virtua Cop</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 18 Feb 2009 21:15:00 EST. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/call-of-duty-world-at-war"><em>Call of Duty: World At War</em></a> continues its slow descent down the UK Charts this week, ending up at number four, while <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/wii-fit"><em>Wii Fit</em></a> clings onto the number one spot for the millionth week in a row. New contender <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/fear-2"><em>FEAR 2</em></a> gives an admirable performance, making its way to the number two spot, though we suspect this may not last very long. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/house-of-the-dead-overkill"><em>House Of The Dead: Overkill</em></a> sadly didn't make the top ten, instead coming in at number 15. Considering the number of Wii owners clamoring for hardcore games, they don't seem to be <em>buying</em> them when they actually appear.<br /><br />With <em>Wii Fit</em>, <em>Wii Play</em>, <em>Mario Kart Wii</em> and <em>Mario And Sonic At The Olympic Games</em> all in the top ten week after week, is it any wonder developers are more likely to produce waggle-thons and mini-game collections for the console?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/17/fear-2-debuts-at-number-2-in-uk-charts/">FEAR 2 debuts at #2 in UK charts</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 17 Feb 2009 18:50:00 EST. Even if you're already playing <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/02/looking-at-what-makes-house-of-the-dead-overkill-so-unique/"><em>The House of the Dead: Overkill</em></a> today, we suggest you take a few minutes off from clicking the Wiimote at zombies and click the mouse at them instead. <br /><br />Overkill Poster Creator, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Sega/">Sega</a>'s new promotional site for Headstrong Games' spinoff, is an online tool that lets users arrange official backgrounds, art, and slogans into a wallpaper image, which is then made available for download in three different sizes. All the art assets can be resized, and everything can have separate filters applied, all from a simple Flash interface. <br /><br />The image above is our humble effort, made in about five minutes. It wouldn't even have taken that long, except we kept trying to make funny ones and they kept coming out <em>cool.</em> We eventually just gave up on trying to subvert the thing and made one we <em>actually</em> like.<br />
<br />[Via <a href="http://gaygamer.net/2009/02/house_of_the_dead_overkill_get.html">GayGamer</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/11/house-of-the-diy-make-your-own-overkill-wallpaper/">House of the DIY: Make your own Overkill wallpaper</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 11 Feb 2009 10:00:00 EST. Headstrong Games <span style="font-style: italic;">could</span> have chosen to make <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/27/how-does-one-make-a-house-of-the-dead/"><span style="font-style: italic;">The House of the Dead: Overkill</span></a> pretty much on autopilot. Gun goes <span style="font-style: italic;">here</span>, zombies go <span style="font-style: italic;">here,</span> here's a village, and ... cue monotone Engrish exposition. And it would have been awesome! But Headstrong has actually put some thought into the setting and story, meshing characters and elements of the classic series (like Agent G of "G's bloodstains!" fame) with a totally new story and feel.<br /><br />Headstrong discusses the development of the game's story and locations in a video after the break. We especially like seeing how much attention was paid to creating different zombie designs appropriate to each game's location, if only because about 90% people's attention in the game will be directed at the zombal component.<br />
<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/29/house-of-the-dead-devs-on-overkills-story-zombie-appropriatene/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>House of the Dead devs on Overkill's story, zombie appropriateness</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/29/house-of-the-dead-devs-on-overkills-story-zombie-appropriatene/">House of the Dead devs on Overkill's story, zombie appropriateness</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 29 Jan 2009 13:00:00 EST. You wouldn't think the <em>House of the Dead</em> series would need a lengthy explanation, but Sega <a href="http://www.nintendoraw.com/?p=4967">disagrees</a>. Pre-ordering <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/House-of-The-Dead-Overkill/">The House of The Dead: Overkill</a></em> nets gamers a 32-page comic book, illustrated by Steve Copter of punk-band '<em><a href="http://www.google.ca/url?sa=t&amp;source=web&amp;ct=res&amp;cd=1&amp;url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.myspace.com%2Fblackmekon&amp;ei=L3B_SebPLdzMmQfux-2sBA&amp;usg=AFQjCNE7tbb67ij-pkcIVlWawPVYIbfgKg&amp;sig2=hp8UIr5-ZqwyA7kxw75URA">Black Mekon</a></em>' fame. Available in traditional paper form at <a href="http://www.gamestop.com/Catalog/ProductDetails.aspx?product_id=72474">GameStop</a> or digitally from <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001ET07O0?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=ni01b-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=B001ET07O0">Amazon</a>, the comic stars <em>Overkill</em> protagonist Agent Washington and stripper-extraordinaire Varla Gunns, and details events that occur just before the start of the upcoming game. Here we thought the only explanation needed with <em>House of the Dead</em> was: "Shoot everything that isn't you ... and don't accidentally shoot any survivors."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/27/an-overkill-primer-pre-order-house-of-the-dead-get-prologue-co/">An Overkill Primer: Pre-order House of the Dead, get prologue comic</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 27 Jan 2009 17:00:00 EST. <em>With a lot of bodies</em>.<br /><br />In all seriousness, Gamekyo has uploaded a nice behind-the-scenes video for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/sega">Sega</a>'s upcoming on-rails shooter, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/house-of-the-dead-overkill"><em>House of the Dead: Overkill</em></a>. Among the usual things one finds in these types of videos (pillow fights, for example) are gameplay snippets and poignant gaming discussion from <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/06/wii-fanboy-interview-headstrong-talks-house-of-the-dead-overki/">the dev behind the game</a>. The folks behind the scenes say a lot of the right things: "You don't want to offend the fans of the series," and "Gamers are gamers, it doesn't matter where you come from, shoot a mutant in the face and it's great." <em>Truth</em>. It has appropriate levels of zombie carnage, as well as G himself, doing what he does best. Who can turn down anything to do with G? Not us, that's for sure! No word yet on the US. The Aussie version even (optionally) comes packaged with two of the things!<br /><br />We can't imagine it <em>would</em> make a difference, but if you're on the fence about <em>Overkill</em>, would the availability of an officially licensed, quite cool-looking accessory push you over the edge? Conversely, does the <em>lack</em> of such an item in the US make you feel somewhat cooler on the title? Or do gun shells just <em>not matter </em>all that much?<br /><br />
<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/19/wii-warm-up-the-gun-of-the-dead-overseas/">Wii Warm Up: The Gun of the Dead: Overseas</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 19 Jan 2009 08:00:00 EST. <br />Wow. The build-up to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/06/wii-fanboy-interview-headstrong-talks-house-of-the-dead-overki/"><em>House of the Dead: Overkill</em></a>'s release next month has resulted in some excellent <em>art</em> (be it in the form of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/20/house-of-the-dead-overkill-gets-euro-release-date-collectors/">comics</a>, limited edition <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/24/north-america-also-getting-house-of-the-dead-overkill-bonus/">boxart</a>, or <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/22/house-of-the-amazing-swag/">swag</a>), and here's something else <em>Overkill</em>-related to crave: this superb, <em>grindhousey</em> movie poster. We dearly hope Sega isn't intending to use this solely for the marketing of <em>Overkill</em> and then forget it forever, because this is <em>precisely</em> the kind of thing that needs to be on our walls. You can see a bigger version of this in our gallery, along with three new screens.<br /><br />Meanwhile, Sega has confirmed a <em>very spooky</em> European release date of Friday, February 13th. That's just in time to treat your loved one to a helping of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/19/the-house-of-the-dead-overkill-where-the-dead-walk-and-bull/">black magic and violence</a>! <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/06/wii-fanboy-interview-headstrong-talks-house-of-the-dead-overki/"><em>House of the Dead: Overkill</em></a> players in the UK and Australia will have the option to play the game in a distinctly more <em>badass</em>, yet vaguely cosplayer-esque style, should they choose. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Sega/">Sega</a> and peripheral company <a href="http://www.venomuk.com/home/default.asp">Venom</a> will release a Wii gun shell modeled after the "Hand Cannons" the AMS agents in the game carry. Amazon.co.uk is taking preorders for the item, to be shipped on February 13 (two weeks before the February 28 date they claim for the game) at a price of &pound;12.99 ($19).<br /><br />Australian zombie-haters have it even better: NeoGAFfer untoldhero (an accurate name if ever there was one) <a href="http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=14389750&amp;postcount=39">found</a> a <em>convincingly</em> official-looking <a href="http://www.jbhifionline.com.au/Product/406980">retail listing</a> for a "Bang Bang Box" bundle containing the full <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/20/house-of-the-dead-overkill-gets-euro-release-date-collectors/">Collector's Edition</a> of the game, with the special sleeve and the comic book, as well as two Hand Cannons, for $89 AUD ($59 USD). That price has <em>got</em> to be a mistake. We've got a picture after the break of the heartbreakingly awesome package.<br /><br />Sadly, we've seen nothing about the Hand Cannon in the US. We fear that Sega's deal with Venom doesn't extend out of PAL territories.<br /><br />
<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/16/official-house-of-the-dead-hand-cannon-shoot-like-g-does/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Official House of the Dead: Overkill Hand Cannon: shoot like G does</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/16/official-house-of-the-dead-hand-cannon-shoot-like-g-does/">Official House of the Dead: Overkill Hand Cannon: shoot like G does</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 16 Jan 2009 10:50:00 EST. <br />If you're in the New York area between February 6 - 8, we are now officially jealous of you, for something other than the fact that you live in New York.<br /> <br />Sega USA's blog informs us that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/06/wii-fanboy-interview-headstrong-talks-house-of-the-dead-overki/"><em>House of the Dead: Overkill</em></a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/23/sonic-and-the-black-knight-boxart-suggests-more-storybook-games/"><em>Sonic and the Black Knight</em></a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/16/madworlds-holiday-trailer-now-a-bit-madder/"><em>MadWorld</em></a>, and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/18/x-plays-the-conduit-footage-without-having-to-watch-g4/"><em>The Conduit</em></a> will <em>all</em> be playable at the 2009 New York Comic-Con, which in our opinion makes the <a href="http://www.nycomiccon.com/app/homepage.cfm?moduleid=4698&amp;appname=100453&amp;submenuheader=0&amp;campaignid=61424907&amp;iUserCampaignID=46904176">$30 fee</a> for a Friday or Sunday ticket (or even the $40 for a Saturday pass) totally palatable. While these killer clowns aren't the kind from <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B_BPcDOjJCc">outer space</a>, they're still some tough hombres, as you can see in the pair of new videos for upcoming <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/house-of-the-dead-overkill"><em>House of the Dead: Overkill</em></a>. 1UP recently <a href="http://www.1up.com/do/previewPage?cId=3171918&amp;p=44">interviewed</a> some folks behind the scenes of Sega's upcoming shooter, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/house-of-the-dead-overkill"><em>House of the Dead: Overkill</em></a>. For those of you who can't wait for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/17/nintendo-unleashes-full-q1-schedule/">zombie season</a> like us, they were kind enough to drop another little bit of info about the title that is sure to excite. Within <em>House of the Dead: Overkill</em>, there will be unique challenges that, once completed, will unlock extras in the game. <br /><br />Sega's producer on the game, Omar Woodley, describes one of the challenges as "gangsta style." See, when you kill 50 zombies while pointing the Wiimote sideways, like a "gangsta," then it unlocks a certain feature. Sadly, Omar wasn't willing to give it up on the feature, but the prospect of other unique challenges such as this does sound fun. Plus, there's the whole <em>killing lots of zombies</em> part of it.<br /><br />Who else can't wait until February?<br /><br />
<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/17/house-of-the-dead-overkill-full-of-unique-goals-and-extras/">House of the Dead: Overkill full of unique goals and extras</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 17 Dec 2008 19:08:00 EST. We do actually know most of these dates already (so yeah, maybe the mushroom cloud is a bit excessive), but there's still the occasional scrap of <span style="font-style: italic;">new news</span> buried within.<br /><br />Those <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/20/tenchu-4-surprise-boxart-attack/"><span style="font-style: italic;">Tenchu</span></a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/08/little-kings-very-cute-little-trailer/"><span style="font-style: italic;">Little King's Story</span></a> dates are fresh to us, and there's also confirmation of the first <span style="text-decoration: line-through;">Play on Wii</span> "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/31/point-counterpoint-yea-or-nay-play-on-wii/">New Play Control</a>" games, <span style="font-style: italic;">Pikmin</span> and <span style="font-style: italic;">Mario Power Tennis</span>. For the record, "New Play Control" is a bit of a rubbish name for the series. In our humble opinion, obviously.<br /><br />Make the jump for the full line-up, and remember you can click on a game's name to bring up screens (where available)!<br /><br />
<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/17/nintendo-unleashes-full-q1-schedule/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Nintendo unleashes full Q1 schedule</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/17/nintendo-unleashes-full-q1-schedule/">Nintendo unleashes full Q1 schedule</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 17 Dec 2008 11:46:00 EST. <br />Do you live in the New York area? Want to play <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/supersearch/?q=the+conduit&amp;sort=date">The Conduit</a>,</em><em> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/13/a-new-madworld-trailer-for-the-holidays/">MadWorld</a></em>, and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/10/us-gets-overkill-collectors-edition-with-less-cool-extras/"><em>The House of the Dead: Overkill</em></a> before they release? Well, you might want to head to the New York Comic Con, because <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/sega">Sega</a> is bringing them to the show next year.<br /><br />The New York Comic Con takes place February 6-8 at the Jacob Javits Center in New York City. Aside from the AAA titles, Sega also promises "zombie surprises," whatever that is. Disgusting, zombified limbs as souvenirs? We can only hope so.<br /><br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/15/sega-bringing-madworld-the-conduit-to-new-york-comic-con/">Joystiq</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/15/sega-bringing-the-big-guns-to-new-york-comic-con/">Sega bringing the big guns to New York Comic Con</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 15 Dec 2008 18:30:00 EST. Those looking to attend next year's <a href="http://www.nycomiccon.com/">New York Comic Con</a> have more to look forward to than hygiene experiments and booth babes: Sega has confirmed that it will bring demos of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/madworld"><em>MadWorld</em></a>, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/the-conduit">The Conduit</a> </em>and <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/house-of-the-dead">The House of the Dead: Overkill</a></em> to the event, which takes place February 6-8 at the Jacob Javits Center in New York City. Special "zombie surprises" are also promised, so come prepared.<br /><br />Sega hasn't revealed if any or all of these titles will be playable or merely shown off to those who happen to stroll by its booth. Not that it matters, as you'll likely go blind well before the show after meticulously gluing down individual scales in the name of Aquaman cosplay.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/15/sega-bringing-madworld-the-conduit-to-new-york-comic-con/">Sega bringing MadWorld, The Conduit to New York Comic Con</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 15 Dec 2008 14:00:00 EST.
