In the gameplay department, a "new check point save system" is being added, and the ever-frustrating flashlight issue is being resolved with "the new armor-mounted flashlight." If that weren't enough, the BFG Edition includes both <em>Doom 1 </em>and <em>2</em>, so you can truly vanquish every single last demon in all of the space hells, all in one package. Today, however, the game is a full 20 years old, and id Software is throwing the classic FPS a celebration. Rather than sending all the game's fans party hats and individual slices of cake, though, id's ported <em>Wolf 3D</em> <a href="http://wolfenstein.bethsoft.com/">to web browsers</a>, making it totally free!<br /><br />But perhaps you're not around a computer at the moment, and you'd prefer to play on the go? id's got that covered too, making the iOS port of <em>Wolfenstein 3D</em> free for today only (<a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/wolfenstein-3d-classic-platinum/id309470478?mt=8">the iTunes page</a> still reflects a $1.99 price as of this writing, but Bethesda says it'll flip to free "later today").<br /><br />Or maybe you've already played <em>Wolf 3D</em> more than you'll ever need to? Creator John Carmack recorded a director commentary aimed at superfans of the series, which we've embedded just below the break. Let us know if he talks about rockets at all!<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/05/09/wolfenstein-3d-celebrating-its-20-year-history-by-going-free-on/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Wolfenstein 3D celebrating its 20-year history by going free on browsers, iOS</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/05/09/wolfenstein-3d-celebrating-its-20-year-history-by-going-free-on/">Wolfenstein 3D celebrating its 20-year history by going free on browsers, iOS</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 09 May 2012 10:30:00 EST. Maybe you missed out on the Raven Software-deveolped <em>Quake 4</em> during its initial launch, way back when in 2005? Bethesda is giving everyone a second chance to take on the Strogg this summer.<br /><br />The <a href="http://www.bethblog.com/2012/04/11/quake-4-returns-to-xbox-360/">Bethesda Blog</a> has announced that the Xbox 360 version of <em>Quake 4</em> is being re-released at a new $19.99 price point on June 19. Currently, the only ways to pick up a copy of <em>Quake 4</em> are through <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/steam">Steam</a> (on Windows PC) and at the bottom of your local game retailer's bargain bin.<br /><br />Or maybe your cousin Carl? Accompanying said rumors was a batch of supposed screenshots or artwork, one of which you can see above. In addition to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/02/28/bethesda-doom-4-isn-t-cancelled/">refuting the cancellation rumors</a>, id has now responded to the images as well.<br /><br />While not directly denying their relationship to <em>Doom 4</em>, id's Matt Hooper, design director of <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/rage"><em>Rage</em></a>, <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/id_Hooper/status/174967484506570752">tweeted</a> that the images "have nothing to do with what you're gonna see in <em>Doom 4</em>." Hooper added, "When we officially show things you'll see awesome." Responding to another tweet, Hooper noted that when the official reveal is made, "fans will be happy." For what it's worth, the leaked images show what appears to be a ravaged planet Earth, perhaps giving a nod to <em>Doom 2: Hell on Earth</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/03/02/id-responds-to-alleged-doom-4-image-leak/">Id responds to alleged DOOM 4 image leak</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 02 Mar 2012 10:30:00 EST. Remember when <em>Doom</em> was <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/25/doom-double-d-dodgeball-pulled-from-xbla/">pulled off of Xbox Live Arcade</a> over a year ago because of "expiring rights" (i.e. Zenimax <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/24/bethesda-parent-company-buys-id-software/">acquired Id Software</a>)? Do you also remember that Zenimax stated that the game would be back up "soon," courtesy of Bethesda? Well then, good news because "soon" is apparently today! Bethesda has sent out a note announcing that the original <em>Doom</em> has <a href="http://marketplace.xbox.com/en-US/Product/DOOM/66acd000-77fe-1000-9115-d80258410824?DownloadType=Game#LiveZone">returned XBLA</a>.<br />

id Software's parent company, Bethesda Softworks, confirmed with Joystiq this afternoon that an unknown quantity of employees at the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/rage"><em>Rage</em></a> development studio have been let go. "As part of its standard business practice, id regularly evaluates staffing to ensure it has a workforce that meets the needs of the studio. As part of that process, some id employees were recently let go," the statement reads.<br />
<br />
Despite the layoffs, the publisher additionally noted that it is "still recruiting and hiring qualified developers" for id Software, and that "development work on future id titles continues unabated." id Software is currently working on <em>Doom 4</em>, the next entry in a long-running franchise for the studio, as it has been <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/07/doom-4-announced-id-software-hiring/">for the past four-ish years</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/10/bethesda-confirms-layoffs-at-id-software-work-on-future-id-tit/">Bethesda confirms layoffs at id Software: 'Work on future id titles continues unabated'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 10 Jan 2012 15:04:00 EST. If you've been waiting for id Software to open source its retroactively titled id Tech 4 technology, first used in 2004's <em>Doom 3</em>, your seven-year test of patience is nearly over. In a refreshing act of commenting on rumors and speculation, Bethesda has shot down the assertion that id Software's work on <em>Doom 4</em> had been "indefinitely postponed." Kotaku relayed the story from a source "claiming" to be close to the publisher, and suggesting that <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/doom-4"><em>Doom 4</em></a> development had been jettisoned in response to <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/game/rage">Rage</a>'s </em>rough landing.<br />
<br />
Pete Hines, VP of PR and Marketing at Bethesda Softworks, <a href="http://twitter.com/#!/DCDeacon/status/127376777755635712">tweeted</a>: "Re: DOOM 4 rumor, games are done when they are done and no title under development at id has been postponed --indefinitely or otherwise." In response to another journalist, Hines <a href="http://twitter.com/#!/DCDeacon/status/127362822731599872">described</a> the rumor as "complete bollocks." Hey, PR folks? More of this, please.<br />
<br />
Though it may not be officially postponed -- strangled in its bed because a sibling brought home a mixed report card -- <em>Doom 4</em> (working title) isn't likely to arrive any time soon. This is id Software, and the game was <em>only</em> announced in 2008, roughly a year after we <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/11/id-software-debuts-new-engine-at-apple-conference/">first heard about <em>Rage</em></a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/21/bethesda-shoots-down-doom-4-postponement-rumors/">Bethesda shoots down Doom 4 postponement rumors</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 21 Oct 2011 10:20:00 EST. For us, <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/game/rage">Rage</a></em> was <em>"</em>a scaffolding for a game of bolder ideas, ideas which, for whatever reason, aren't realized." The general feeling from other reviews is that it's a well-made effort from veteran studio id Software, though gameplay isn't anything better than what's out there now. The game is floating a metacritic score in the low 80s, with review scores <a href="http://www.metacritic.com/game/xbox-360/rage/critic-reviews">scattered like buckshot</a>.
<ul>
	<li>
		<a href="http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/119/1197972p1.html">IGN</a> (<strong>85/100</strong>): "<em>Rage</em> starts to drag toward the second half after most of the mechanics and upgrades are introduced because the fictional world isn't very interesting. Despite the lack of genuinely exciting context, all the content packed into <em>Rage</em> is still a blast to play, including the surprisingly entertaining car combat mode and co-operative challenges. "</li>
	<li>
		<a href="http://www.giantbomb.com/rage/61-20672/reviews/">Giant Bomb</a> (<strong>80/100</strong>): "Even if <em>Rage</em> were the worst game to come out in a long while, it would still arguably be the best-looking one. The sheer complexity of texture and detail packed into every one of the game's environments is nothing short of staggering, especially in the two town hubs that you'll return to again and again between missions."</li>
	<li>
		<a href="http://www.1up.com/reviews/review-rage-melting-pot-post-apocalyptica">1UP</a> (<strong>B</strong>): "<span class="articleText"><em>Rage</em> fits that mold snugly, but it's nothing revolutionary. It comes from a different kind of Id, one that would rather play with existing conventions than reinvent them. Conversely, it's the same Id that puts look and feel on the same high pillar, and it's impossible to call <em>Rage</em> badly-composed. I just don't think it's going to be remembered as anything but a sleeper hit of the fall of 2011. </span>"</li>
	<li>
		<a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-09-14-gears-of-war-3-review">Edge</a> (<span style="font-weight: bold;">7</span><strong>0/100</strong>): "In its later stages, <em>Rage</em> becomes a slog. Enemies get tougher, and the repeated pattern of rooms filling with monsters - which must be killed before, say, a door falls off its hinges - begins to drag. Objectives, meanwhile, rarely move beyond simple fetch quests. There's a fine line between sticking to what you're best at and being stuck in your ways, and id occasionally crosses it."<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/rage-quakecon-2011/">Rage (QuakeCon 2011)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/rage-quakecon-2011/#4351886"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/08/rageshot00060_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/rage-quakecon-2011/#4351887"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/08/rageshot00684_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/rage-quakecon-2011/#4351888"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/08/rageshot00730_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/rage-quakecon-2011/#4351889"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/08/rageshot00764_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/rage-quakecon-2011/#4351890"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/08/rageshot00777_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div></li>

<br />
Those of you who play vidya games primarily on consoles may have insulated yourself from an increasingly common scourge facing your PC gaming brethren: problematic PC ports. While we're sorry to say that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/rage"><em>Rage</em></a> is suffering from some launch-day issues, the PC gaming godfathers at id Software aren't abandoning the platform. So put down those pitchforks. And torches.<br />
<br />
The above video is a good example of the issue: textures pop-in every time the camera moves. It would appear the high-res MegaTextures that id's John Carmack has been talking about for years are being dropped from memory immediately and not streaming in quickly enough. The Xbox 360 release, underpowered relative to the gaming PC in this video, exhibits very little if any texture pop-in which sort of puts the blame purely on your friend and ours: graphics card drivers!<br />
<br />
Bethesda Blog says that, in addition to the texture issues, there are also screen tearing problems but insists that both problems "can be attributed to driver issues" which id Software is "currently working with Nvidia and AMD to resolve [...] as quickly as possible."<br />
<br />
For AMD graphics card users, "you should not use" the beta driver that Bethesda shared yesterday. The <em>Battlefield 3</em> beta drivers will crash to desktop "100% with those drivers," and Beth Blog recommends updating "to the most recent driver when AMD updates, which we're told will be in a few hours." Nvidia users "should try updating Rage to the current beta driver" and Beth Blog will let everyone know when that's available. Be patient, PC gamer. It's been seven years since the last internally developed id Software game; another day or so isn't going to kill you.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/04/psa-rage-is-having-issues-on-pc-fixes-incoming/">PSA: Rage is having issues on PC, fixes incoming</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 04 Oct 2011 17:40:00 EST. <em>RAGE</em> isn't what you think it is.<br />
<br />
In fact, it's easiest to tell you what <em>RAGE</em> isn't right away. It's nothing like Fallout 3. It's nothing like Borderlands. It's not an RPG, though Id and Bethesda have used <a href="http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/96607-Rage-to-Have-Economy-Crafting" target="_blank">RPG terminology</a> in describing it. It's not much of an open world. It's not very big. It's not very long.<br />
<br />
And unfortunately, it's not the return to prominence that Id fans have been hoping for.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/rage-8-2-11-preview/">Rage (8/2/11 preview)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/rage-8-2-11-preview/#4338926"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/08/shot00060_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/rage-8-2-11-preview/#4338927"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/08/shot00684_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/rage-8-2-11-preview/#4338928"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/08/shot00730_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/rage-8-2-11-preview/#4338929"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/08/shot00764_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/rage-8-2-11-preview/#4338930"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/08/shot00777_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/04/rage-review/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>RAGE review: Anger management</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/04/rage-review/">RAGE review: Anger management</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 04 Oct 2011 00:00:00 EST. You didn't think <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/rage"><em>Rage</em></a> was only about the relationship between a fallen-to-Earth Ark dweller and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/12/rage-dev-diary-introduces-the-superhero-john-goodman/">wasteland superhero John Goodman</a>, did you? As this latest walkthrough can attest, it's also about carefully angling rockets to murder faraway goons. Oh, and wearing <em>totally sweet</em> deer antlers as a warrior helmet, naturally.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/29/rage-walkthrough-explores-the-murderous-mysteries-of-jackal-cany/">Rage walkthrough explores the murderous mysteries of Jackal Canyon</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 29 Sep 2011 19:00:00 EST. <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/rage">Rage</a> </em>will span three discs on Xbox 360 and require an 8GB install on PS3, id Software creative director Tim Willits has confirmed. It was rumored that Rage would have a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/07/make-some-room-for-the-rage-pc-specs/">large install</a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/19/id-xbox-360-rage-may-have-separate-discs-for-campaign-and-multi/">multiple discs on 360</a>, but it seemed as if id was leaning toward a slim-and-trim two-disc set, stating that a separate multiplayer disc-swap would be "fail." id didn't have to pick a disc number for the PS3 version of Rage, effectively utilizing the Blu-ray drive to hold all of the game's gigs, something that Willits seemed very pleased about:<br />
<br />
"Sony was great," Willits said. "Kudos to Sony for letting us do that. They don't allow every game to do that. So definitely, hats off. What we were able to do is install all the textures to the highest level. What is nice about the PS3 platform is that it's just one platform. Everyone has one Blu-ray drive, one hard drive, it's all the same. Some of the other systems you have... should I install it on my 360? Should I not install it? So yes, it's very nice."<br />
<br />
For 360 versions, Willits said id recommends installing the game to the hard drive, or if you don't have the space for <em>all 22GB</em>, after installing and finishing the first half of the game from disc one, uninstall it, and then install disc two. There isn't a reason to disc-swap after completing the first half, and "you don't really need to install the multiplayer disc if you're really tight on hard disk space," Willits said.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/25/rage-requires-3-discs-on-xbox-360-8gb-install-on-ps3-tolerance/">Rage requires 3 discs on Xbox 360, 8GB install on PS3, tolerance from fans</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 25 Sep 2011 19:30:00 EST. After peeping the minimum PC specs required for id Software's mutant shoot-a-thon, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/rage"><em>Rage</em></a>, we realize that our plan to duct-tape six Eee PCs together <em>might</em> not work out. AMC's <em>Breaking Bad</em> featured a bizarrely long, obvious advertising plug for <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/rage">Rage</a> </em>on this week's episode, as seen above, and included a light-gun motion-controller that Bethesda assures us is <a href="http://www.bethblog.com/index.php/2011/09/02/rage-featured-on-this-weeks-episode-of-breaking-bad/?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+bethesdablog+%28Bethesda+Blog%29">entirely fictional</a>. We knew using crystal meth could lead to extreme, sudden bursts of rage -- we just didn't think it would ever be so <em>literal</em>. The clip shows Jesse Pinkman, drug-peddler extraordinaire, playing a level of <em>Rage</em> while hallucinating about shooting chemist Gale Boetticher point-blank in the face.<br />
<br />
While we don't know what Bethesda's strategy is with this plug, we're pretty sure it's not a great argument against the (<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/ab-1179/">bogus</a>) theory that video games promote violence. Maybe it marks the beginning of <em>Rage</em>'s new reverse-psychology tagline: <em>Rage -- Not Even Once</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/02/rage-has-a-cameo-in-breaking-bad-because-nothing-sells-games-be/">Rage has a cameo in Breaking Bad, because nothing sells games better than meth</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 02 Sep 2011 23:00:00 EST. Landmark titles <em>DOOM</em> and <em>DOOM 2</em> received a USK 16+ rating in Germany today. Both titles were previously <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federal_Department_for_Media_Harmful_to_Young_Persons#Legal_consequences">indexed</a> by the Federal Department for Media Harmful to Young Persons (<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federal_Department_for_Media_Harmful_to_Young_Persons">BPjM</a>), which placed the games in the same commercially <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federal_Department_for_Media_Harmful_to_Young_Persons#Legal_consequences">restrictive category</a> as porn.<br />
<br />
"We are obviously very pleased with their decision," Bethesda Softworks VP of PR and Marketing Pete Hines told us this morning. "Can't give you details yet on when they will be available in Germany. We'll let everyone know as soon as we know."<br />
<br />
Hines explained that an appeal of the indexing is allowed after 10 years, with <em>DOOM</em> and <em>DOOM 2</em> having been released in 1993 and 1994, respectively. Publisher Bethesda Softworks, whose parent company <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/24/bethesda-parent-company-buys-id-software/">acquired</a> original developer id Software in 2009, figured it would take the shot.<br />
<br />
This is the latest classification surprise from Germany, which recently <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/14/gears-of-war-3-classified-in-germany-without-edits/">rated <em>Gears of War 3</em></a>, after both the previous installments were indexed. Microsoft is currently <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/16/microsoft-looking-into-gears-of-war-1-and-2-in-germany/">looking into</a> getting the first two games available in the country.<br />

Will the man with the flamethrower ever learn? As seen in the latest trailer for id Software's upcoming shooter, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/rage"><em>Rage</em></a>, he clearly still hasn't. We tend to give Facebook a lot of guff for its many, many menial labor simulators, but today, the social network gets a pass. As a way of thanking the 100,000 users that "Liked" the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/rage">official <em>Rage</em> page</a> on the service, id has made the iOS versions of the game (both classic and HD) free for the next week.<br />

Bethesda is putting the <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/rage">Rage</a> </em>back in<em> cloud storage</em>, announcing yesterday that id Software's FPS will use Steamworks on PC. Confirmation came via the Bethesda <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/Bethblog/status/102128388499709952">Twitter</a>, which simply stated, "Since folks are asking... we can confirm that <em>RAGE </em>will use Steamworks on PC." Steamworks will allow <em>Rage </em>developers to take advantage of the Steam client, including DRM, voice communication, multiplayer hosting and achievement features.<br />
<br />
This was all almost <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/12/15/rage-will-be-published-by-bethesda-ea-out-of-the-picture/">an impossible dream</a> -- in 2008 id Software and EA had a publishing agreement to release <em>Rage </em>through the EA Partners program, which, today, would mean a release on Origin and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/06/battlefield-3-wont-be-sold-on-steam-ea-claims-service-restric/">no love for Valve</a>. In 2009 id was purchased by ZeniMax Media, Bethesda's parent company, ending the EA agreement and landing us with Steamy love for <em>R</em><em>age</em>. Or <em>Rage</em>ful love for Steam. Either way, it's <em>hot</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/13/we-put-steam-in-your-rage-so-you-can-rage-while-you-steam-and-no/">We put Steam in your Rage so you can Rage while you Steam and not use Origin</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 13 Aug 2011 13:30:00 EST. "You can imagine, if there was an actor from Hollywood that could survive an asteroid destroying the earth, he would be on that list." id Tech 2: Quake (1996), Quake 2 (1997)</li>

</ul>
Notice a trend? With the exception of the earliest id shooters, which evolved very quickly, id has been in the business of developing one game per technology platform for the last eleven years. Sure, they licensed that technology to other developers to create other id titles like <em>Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory</em> to <em>Quake 4</em> but when strictly talking about the work being done internally at id, technology and game development have gone hand in hand. But id's Todd Hollenshead knows that has to change.<br />
<br />
"We need to get to shorter cycles," Hollenshead <a href="http://www.vg247.com/2011/08/09/ids-superego-todd-hollenshead-on-all-things-id-software/">told VG247</a>. "And I think part of that is that we can't be doing a revolutionary technology with every game we develop." To that end, the studio's upcoming <em>Doom 4</em> will use - you guessed it - id tech 5! "We have to go to a bit more of an iterative technology approach," he admitted, adding, "I think it's a completely doable thing, but I don't think it just happens without putting some effort into it."<br />
<br />
Luckily, with Bethesda's deep pockets backing the studio now, id is able to work on two games in parallel, without risking everything. "The capital required to put both those games in production - the means and size to do them at a triple-A level - would have been a literal "bet the company" sort of thing," Hollenshead explained. So, after <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/rage"><em>Rage</em></a> ships does that mean id can finally get to work on that Commander Keen reboot we've been waiting for all these years?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/09/id-software-looking-to-shorten-dev-cycles-stop-building-new-eng/">id Software looking to shorten dev cycles, stop building new engines for every game</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 09 Aug 2011 20:15:00 EST. id has sent along some new screens for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/rage"><em>Rage</em></a> and they're quite grizzled. You've been waiting to get your mitts on the source code to <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/doom-3"><em>Doom 3</em></a> (how do you type with those mitts on?), and your time is almost here. First announced at <a href="http://news.bigdownload.com/2009/08/14/quakecon-2009-john-carmack-keynote-highlights/">QuakeCon 2009</a>, John Carmack confirmed plans today, during QuakeCon <em>2011</em>, to release the source to the 2004 FPS following the launch of id's new hotness, <em>Rage</em>. The code will be released this year.<br />
<br />
According to VG247's liveblog, Carmack said in his keynote that these releases of Id code are a "challenge to other developers," and are beneficial to both Id and "the community." They're also a QuakeCon tradition -- last year, <em>Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory</em> and <em>Return to Castle Wolfenstein</em> were <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/13/wolfenstein-enemy-territory-and-return-to-castle-wolfenstein-so/">opened up</a>.<br />
<br />
In related news, the <a href="http://store.steampowered.com/sale/quakecon_doom">Doom &amp; Quake Complete Pack</a> is on sale on Steam right now for $30.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/04/doom-3-source-code-going-free-after-rage-launch/">Doom 3 source code going free after Rage launch</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 04 Aug 2011 19:30:00 EST. There are some very important things I want you to know right away about id Software's long-in-development id Tech 5 showcase, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/rage"><em>Rage</em></a>.<br />
<br />
<ol>
	<li>
		It is, unequivocally, a first-person shooter <em>first</em>, everything else <em>second</em>. The car handling is fine, as is the RPG-esque quest delivery. But it's clear that the shooting is top priority.</li>
	<li>
		It's absolutely gorgeous, but not in the Sherilyn Fenn kinda way. The destroyed landscape is rich with detail, strewn with settlements and towns that look appropriately lived in, full of weather-beaten characters that show more life than those found in other Bethesda-published games.</li>
	<li>
		The combat and RPG elements come across in an engaging mixture. I was excited to explore each "dungeon" for loot, carefully making sure not to alert any dangerous gangs while killing strays with my silent blade.</li>
</ol>
In short, despite being <em>another</em> first-person shooter -- named "Rage," no less -- and despite the post-apocalyptic setting, I'd describe the three hours I spent venturing through this version of "The Wasteland" as a breath of fresh air.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/rage-8-2-11-preview/">Rage (8/2/11 preview)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/rage-8-2-11-preview/#4338926"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/08/shot00060_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/rage-8-2-11-preview/#4338927"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/08/shot00684_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/rage-8-2-11-preview/#4338928"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/08/shot00730_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/rage-8-2-11-preview/#4338929"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/08/shot00764_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/rage-8-2-11-preview/#4338930"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/08/shot00777_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/02/rage-preview/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Rage preview: On the road again</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/02/rage-preview/">Rage preview: On the road again</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 02 Aug 2011 10:00:00 EST. People have been arguing about violence in video games for as long as video games have had violence for people to argue about, and few titles have come under as much sustained fire as Id Software's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Doom"><em>Doom</em></a>. It would stand to reason then, that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/john-carmack">John Carmack</a>, a man who was instrumental in the game's development and the FPS revolution that followed, would be chief among those most affected by the debate's wide-reaching ramifications. Not so much, it turns out.<br />
<br />
"I never took seriously the violence in video games debate. It was basically talking points for people to get on CNN and espouse their stuff on there," he said, <a href="http://www.industrygamers.com/news/doom-creator-games-are-cathartic-reduce-aggression-and-violence/">speaking with IndustryGamers</a>. "In the end it didn't matter, it didn't make any impact on things. I never felt threatened by it and it turned out not to matter." Carmack also believes that violent games help calm agressive players and are, in-fact, good for us:
<meta charset="utf-8" />

When they're not busy charging you with clubs and screaming, or taking aim with their <em>bizarre</em> future weapons, the denizens of the world of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/rage"><em>Rage</em></a> are quite a cultured group of folks. As you'll find out in this latest dev diary, they truly run the gamut of disfigured humanoids.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/28/meet-the-colorful-inhabitants-of-rages-wasteland-in-latest-dev/">Meet the colorful inhabitants of Rage's wasteland in latest dev diary</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 28 Jul 2011 17:02:00 EST. So much of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/rage"><em>Rage</em></a>'s promotional materials have focused on the game's over-the-top weaponry, but the latest developer diary instead shows the environments you'll navigate while compulsively collecting said armaments. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/01/zenimax-trademark-dishonored-points-to-potential-new-game/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/zenimaxlogo530px.jpg" style="border-width: 0px; border-style: solid; margin: 4px;" /></a></div>
Bethesda Softworks parent company Zenimax has filed for an extension of a trademark for a potential new game called <em>Dishonored</em>. <a href="http://alt.systemlink.me/2011/06/zenimax-trademark-dishonored-game.html">System Link</a> just found the trademark, which extends to a few domain registrations -- all signs point to this being an unannounced game right now.<br />
<br />
Everything else at this point is speculation, though we're fairly certain that Bethesda and id aren't involved -- both have <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/skyrim"><em>Skyrim </em></a>and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/rage"><em>Rage</em></a> to worry about at present. Zenimax does own several other studios, however, including Machinegames Sweden AB, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/28/shinji-mikami-to-develop-games-for-bethesda-as-zenimax-acquires/">Tango Gameworks</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/arkane-studios">Arkane Studios</a> and Vir2L Studios, any of whom could be tapped for this project.<br />
<br />
Finally, let's not forget Zenimax Online Studios, the parent company's MMO developer formed in 2007 ... right around when the trademark was first filed. Coincidence?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/01/zenimax-trademark-dishonored-points-to-potential-new-game/">Zenimax trademark 'Dishonored' points to potential new game</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 01 Jul 2011 07:00:00 EST. The last known release date for iD Software's apocalyptic FPS <em>Rage</em> was <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/13/quakecon-rage-to-be-released-sept-13-2011-in-the-us-sept-15/">September 13</a>, as announced last year. Apparently, however, iD needs a bit more time to get things nice and apocalyptic (and, um, to get out of the way of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/23/gears-of-war-3-release-date/"><em>Gears of War 3</em></a>, we're guessing).<br />
<br />
The <a href="http://www.rage.com/">official site</a> now lists the release date as October 4. The European release date has been bumped to October 7. We don't know how to react to this news that the game has been delayed. Like, we don't know what emotion to feel.<br />
<br />
