There's something odd going on with <em>Wolfenstein 3D</em> on PSN and XBLM. First off, this week the ESRB re-rated the classic game on Xbox 360 and PS3, nearly four years after it arrived on the platforms digitally. Secondly, it's sprouted an <a href="http://www.xbox.com/en-US/Search?q=wolfenstein%203d#Games">additional page</a> on XBLM.<br />
<br />
Playing Spot the Difference between the two pages, the new one lists the publisher as Bethesda rather than Activision. Developer id Software was acquired by Bethesda's parent company Zenimax in June 2009, just a few weeks after <em>Wolfenstein 3D</em> came to XBLM and PSN. Also, the release date is now listed as May 31 of this year, which is a bit odd. The box art is slightly different too, and once more notes Bethesda's name instead of Activision's.<br />
<br />
Overall, the whole thing's as curious as Adolf Hitler in a mech suit. The timing's certainly interesting given the recent reveal of <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/07/wolfenstein-the-new-order-announced/">Wolfenstein: The New Order</a></em>. When approached on the matter, a company spokesperson told Joystiq, "No comment on that from Bethesda."<br />
<br />
<strong>Update</strong>: Bethesda VP of PR and Marketing Pete Hines told Joystiq there's <a href="http://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-prn1/p480x480/935784_10151424178252005_1158080246_n.jpg">nothing to see here</a>.<br />
<br />
"No changes. Was originally published through Activision, so now that it's reverted back to us we have to jump through ESRB (ratings go to the publisher, they don't "follow" the game to a new publisher) and console hoops (game has to be "re-certed" by the new publisher)," Hines said. <p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/14/wolfenstein-3d-re-rated-by-esrb-gets-new-page-on-xblm/">Wolfenstein 3D re-rated by ESRB, gets new page on XBLM [update: housekeeping]</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 14 May 2013 06:00:00 EST. Bethesda has announced it has <a href="http://www.bethblog.com/2013/05/02/play-testers-wanted/">opened a Play Test Lab in Dallas, Texas</a>, inside the offices of id Software. The lab will be used to test upcoming games with local Dallas players, and Bethesda promises some extra "games or swag" to anyone who comes in for testing.<br />
<br />
You'll need to be 18 or over to apply, and Bethesda says it's looking for gamers of all types, both casual and hardcore. If you're around Dallas and want to put your name in the hat, you can <a href="http://playtest.bethsoft.com/">sign up on the website</a> right now.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/03/bethesda-opens-a-play-test-lab-at-id-software-in-dallas/">Bethesda opens a Play Test Lab at id Software in Dallas</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 03 May 2013 05:00:00 EST. Since its announcement in 2007, developer id Software has completely rebooted <em>Doom 4</em>'s development at least once and still doesn't have much to show as far as an actual game goes, <a href="http://kotaku.com/five-years-and-nothing-to-show-how-doom-4-got-off-trac-468097062">Kotaku</a> reports. The website provides the following breakdown from a series of anonymous people:<br /><br /><em>Doom 4</em> began as a Call of Duty-inspired shooter, with cinematic, scripted sequences, but after the lukewarm launch of <em>Rage</em> in 2011, id took another look at the project and started from scratch. Within that process, <em>Rage 2</em> was canceled and id tried to merge the Rage and Doom teams, to focus solely on <em>Doom 4</em>.<br /><br />By January 2012, id wanted <em>Doom 4 </em>to<em> be </em>as big as <em>Skyrim</em>, but the disparate teams had trouble finding a groove. Additionally, much of the project's "top talent" left id throughout 2012. This year, Zenimax, id's parent company, issued an ultimatum that could see id cleaned out to refocus on tech, two people tell Kotaku.<br /><br />For now <em>Doom 4 </em>is still alive, though it may not be immortal. In October 2011 and February 2012, <em>Doom 4</em> had two cancelation scares, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/21/bethesda-shoots-down-doom-4-postponement-rumors/">each</a> of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/02/28/bethesda-doom-4-isn-t-cancelled/">which</a> Bethesda refuted. The image above was part of a series that leaked in early 2012, though id <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/03/02/id-responds-to-alleged-doom-4-image-leak/">Design Director Matt Hooper</a> said it didn't represent actual <em>Doom 4</em> direction. Last we heard - back in August 2012 - <em>Doom 4 </em>was attached to the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/08/05/doom-4-to-be-compatible-with-oculus-rift-vr-headset/">Oculus Rift's VR push</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/04/03/report-doom-4-development-still-rocky-rage-2-canned/">Report: Doom 4 development still rocky, Rage 2 canned</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 03 Apr 2013 17:00:00 EST. Another trophy is for finishing the campaign on 'Ultra Nightmare difficulty,' suggesting the DLC includes a new difficulty level even tougher than plain ol' Nightmare setting.<br /><br />The trophies are backed up by a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/06/19/rage-the-scorchers-pops-up-on-pegi-smells-like-dlc-to-us/">PEGI listing </a>from earlier this year for 'Rage: The Scorchers,' content rated for Xbox 360, PS3, and PC. id Software founder John Carmack has also said mod tools which were supposed to ship with <em>Rage</em> were coming to the game "soon." It's just speculation, but if the DLC is accurate it may coincide with their release.<br /><br />We've reached out to Bethesda for confirmation of the DLC.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/11/30/rage-is-getting-the-scorchers-dlc-soon-new-trophies-suggest/">Rage is getting 'The Scorchers' DLC soon, new trophies suggest</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 30 Nov 2012 09:30:00 EST. However, <em>Doom</em> and <em>Doom 2</em> are only $5 apiece separately, so we have no idea how this math is working out for the BFG bundle.<br /><br />Perhaps the premium is for The Lost Missions, or the ability to wield the flashlight and gun <em>simultaneously</em>? Anyway, wait a month and all of this will be $3 during some Steam holiday sale.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/11/12/doom-3-normal-edition-available-on-steam-again/">Doom 3 (:Normal Edition) available on Steam again</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 12 Nov 2012 19:30:00 EST. A stripped down version of id Tech 5 was used to port both <em>Doom</em> and <em>Doom 2</em> to Sony's current-gen console for the upcoming <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/doom-3-bfg-edition">Doom 3 BFG Edition</a></em>.<br /><br />Speaking with Joystiq contributor Britton Peele at QuakeCon 2012, id Software Creative Director Tim Willits said the "easiest way" to get network support working on PlayStation 3 was to start with <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/Rage/">Rage</a>, </em>the 2011 shooter in which id Tech 5 debuted.<br /><br />"We never released <em>Doom 1</em> and <em>Doom 2</em> on the PlayStation Network," Willits said. "So we're like, 'OK, what's the easiest way to do this?' And what the guys did instead of rewriting all the network support, [support for] friends, and all that kind of stuff, is they took <em>Rage</em>, took out all the '<em>Rage</em>' bits and put <em>Doom 1</em> and <em>2</em> on top of it." Despite the update in background tech, the classic games look identical to their original '90s counterparts.<br /><br />Willits added that when PS3 players launch the classics this October, they will actually be "launching most of id Tech 5," with a "game loop that runs <em>Doom 1</em> and <em>Doom 2</em>." Isn't technology grand?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/08/04/stripped-down-version-of-rage-used-to-bring-classic-doom-games-t/">Stripped down version of Rage used to bring classic Doom games to PS3</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 04 Aug 2012 17:30:00 EST. Luckily, the UI Programmer job listing that reveals this information also states id is specifically working on "an unannounced game on future-generation consoles."<br /><br />As superannuation (who <a href="http://kotaku.com/5928969/infinity-wards-next+gen-call-of-duty-ids-next+gen-surprise-1666-and-other-gaming-secrets">spotted the listing</a>) points out, the listing calls for "Familiarity with id Software games, characters, brands and universes," which suggests the new game may be part of one of id's existing franchises: <em>Wolfenstein, Doom, Quake, Rage</em>, or ... <em>Commander Keen</em>. First, the <em>Quake Live</em> tournament will see professional and amateur players compete for a share of $30,000 in the Duel Invitational Masters Championship, Capture the Flag Open, Duel Open and Free For All, the last of which will be available to attendees at the <em>Quake Live</em> Free Play booth.<br /><br />Registration for the <em>Quake Live</em> tournament is open now through July 31 on the <a href="http://registration.quakecon.org/">Quakecon site</a>.<br /><br />The annual keynote address will be handled by id Software co-founder John Carmack. The full panel lineup is set to be announced in a few days, but it will include "Marty Stratton from id Software; Ted Price, President and CEO of Insomniac Games; Chet Faliszek and Tom Leonard from Valve Software; and Geoff Keighley, host of Spike's GameTrailers."<br /><br />Minecraft EDU and PVP will also have a presence at QuakeCon. At Bethesda's own booth, QuakeCon attendees can get their hands on both <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/dishonored">Dishonored</a> </em>and <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/doom-3-bfg-edition">Doom 3 BFG Edition</a>.</em><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/07/18/quakecon-2012-to-have-playable-dishonored-doom-3-bfg-edition/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>QuakeCon 2012 to have playable Dishonored, Doom 3 BFG Edition</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/07/18/quakecon-2012-to-have-playable-dishonored-doom-3-bfg-edition/">QuakeCon 2012 to have playable Dishonored, Doom 3 BFG Edition</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 18 Jul 2012 23:00:00 EST. It appears that The Scorchers are back, as a listing on Europe's PEGI game rating website outs something named "Rage: The Scorchers" for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.siliconera.com/2012/06/18/rage-the-scorchers-sounds-like-dlc-for-rage/">Siliconera</a> spotted the listing and dated it to less than a week ago. For its part, Bethesda hasn't offered a comment, though we've reached out for more info. Thus far, <em>Rage</em> has zero DLC beyond a day-one "Anarchy Edition" bonus. Ahead of the game's launch last year, id Software's Tim Willits told <a href="http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2011-09-28-all-the-rage-interview?page=1">GamesIndustry.biz</a>, "Our immediate plans, of course, are some DLC for <em>Rage</em>," so it stands to reason that DLC of <em>some</em> form for the game is still planned.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/06/19/rage-the-scorchers-pops-up-on-pegi-smells-like-dlc-to-us/">'Rage: The Scorchers' pops up on PEGI, smells like DLC to us</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 19 Jun 2012 13:15:00 EST. The publisher announced this morning that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/05/30/doom-3-bfg-edition-brings-hell-to-360-ps3-pc-this-fall-with/"><em>Doom 3</em> "BFG Edition"</a> - which includes "re-mastered versions" of <em>Doom 3 </em>and its "Resurrection of Evil" DLC, as well as the new content dubbed "The Lost Mission" - arrives on October 16 in North America and October 19 in Europe.<br /><br />Should all that <em>Doom 3</em> content not be enough, both <em>Doom 1</em> and <em>2</em> are included in the repackaging, and the whole schebang runs $39.99 on 360/PS3, while it's $10 cheaper on PC. Of course, if you wanna play it in virtual reality, <em>Lawnmower Man</em>-style, that's gonna require a heck of a lot more money. And <a href="http://content.usatoday.com/communities/gamehunters/post/2012/06/doom-3-comes-to-virtual-head-mounted-displays-/1">being friends with John Carmack</a> would also help.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/06/19/doom-3-bfg-edition-bringing-hellspawn-to-retail-on-oct-16-in/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Doom 3 'BFG Edition' bringing Hellspawn to retail on Oct. 16 in NA, Oct. 19 in EU</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/06/19/doom-3-bfg-edition-bringing-hellspawn-to-retail-on-oct-16-in/">Doom 3 'BFG Edition' bringing Hellspawn to retail on Oct. 16 in NA, Oct. 19 in EU</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 19 Jun 2012 10:15:00 EST. In the gameplay department, a "new check point save system" is being added, and the ever-frustrating flashlight issue is being resolved with "the new armor-mounted flashlight." If that weren't enough, the BFG Edition includes both <em>Doom 1 </em>and <em>2</em>, so you can truly vanquish every single last demon in all of the space hells, all in one package. Today, however, the game is a full 20 years old, and id Software is throwing the classic FPS a celebration. Rather than sending all the game's fans party hats and individual slices of cake, though, id's ported <em>Wolf 3D</em> <a href="http://wolfenstein.bethsoft.com/">to web browsers</a>, making it totally free!<br /><br />But perhaps you're not around a computer at the moment, and you'd prefer to play on the go? id's got that covered too, making the iOS port of <em>Wolfenstein 3D</em> free for today only (<a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/wolfenstein-3d-classic-platinum/id309470478?mt=8">the iTunes page</a> still reflects a $1.99 price as of this writing, but Bethesda says it'll flip to free "later today").<br /><br />Or maybe you've already played <em>Wolf 3D</em> more than you'll ever need to? Creator John Carmack recorded a director commentary aimed at superfans of the series, which we've embedded just below the break. Maybe you missed out on the Raven Software-deveolped <em>Quake 4</em> during its initial launch, way back when in 2005? Bethesda is giving everyone a second chance to take on the Strogg this summer.<br /><br />The <a href="http://www.bethblog.com/2012/04/11/quake-4-returns-to-xbox-360/">Bethesda Blog</a> has announced that the Xbox 360 version of <em>Quake 4</em> is being re-released at a new $19.99 price point on June 19. Currently, the only ways to pick up a copy of <em>Quake 4</em> are through <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/steam">Steam</a> (on Windows PC) and at the bottom of your local game retailer's bargain bin.<br /><br />Or maybe your cousin Carl? He told us he liked <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/quake/"><em>Quake</em></a> once. Accompanying said rumors was a batch of supposed screenshots or artwork, one of which you can see above. In addition to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/02/28/bethesda-doom-4-isn-t-cancelled/">refuting the cancellation rumors</a>, id has now responded to the images as well.<br /><br />While not directly denying their relationship to <em>Doom 4</em>, id's Matt Hooper, design director of <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/rage"><em>Rage</em></a>, <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/id_Hooper/status/174967484506570752">tweeted</a> that the images "have nothing to do with what you're gonna see in <em>Doom 4</em>." Hooper added, "When we officially show things you'll see awesome." Responding to another tweet, Hooper noted that when the official reveal is made, "fans will be happy." For what it's worth, the leaked images show what appears to be a ravaged planet Earth, perhaps giving a nod to <em>Doom 2: Hell on Earth</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/03/02/id-responds-to-alleged-doom-4-image-leak/">Id responds to alleged DOOM 4 image leak</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 02 Mar 2012 10:30:00 EST. They might get the wrong idea.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/27/rage-hd-adds-melee-combat-in-app-purchases-in-2-0-update/">Rage HD adds melee combat, in-app purchases in 2.0 update</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 27 Jan 2012 02:00:00 EST. Remember when <em>Doom</em> was <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/25/doom-double-d-dodgeball-pulled-from-xbla/">pulled off of Xbox Live Arcade</a> over a year ago because of "expiring rights" (i.e. Zenimax <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/24/bethesda-parent-company-buys-id-software/">acquired Id Software</a>)? Do you also remember that Zenimax stated that the game would be back up "soon," courtesy of Bethesda? Well then, good news because "soon" is apparently today! Bethesda has sent out a note announcing that the original <em>Doom</em> has <a href="http://marketplace.xbox.com/en-US/Product/DOOM/66acd000-77fe-1000-9115-d80258410824?DownloadType=Game#LiveZone">returned XBLA</a>.<br />
<br />
The granddaddy of modern shooters will set you back $5 and features both co-op and versus multiplayer via Xbox Live.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/18/doom-stalking-xblas-corridors-once-again/">Doom stalking XBLA's corridors once again</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 18 Jan 2012 13:00:00 EST. id Software's parent company, Bethesda Softworks, confirmed with Joystiq this afternoon that an unknown quantity of employees at the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/rage"><em>Rage</em></a> development studio have been let go. "As part of its standard business practice, id regularly evaluates staffing to ensure it has a workforce that meets the needs of the studio. As part of that process, some id employees were recently let go," the statement reads.<br />
<br />
Despite the layoffs, the publisher additionally noted that it is "still recruiting and hiring qualified developers" for id Software, and that "development work on future id titles continues unabated." id Software is currently working on <em>Doom 4</em>, the next entry in a long-running franchise for the studio, as it has been <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/07/doom-4-announced-id-software-hiring/">for the past four-ish years</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/10/bethesda-confirms-layoffs-at-id-software-work-on-future-id-tit/">Bethesda confirms layoffs at id Software: 'Work on future id titles continues unabated'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 10 Jan 2012 15:04:00 EST. If you've been waiting for id Software to open source its retroactively titled id Tech 4 technology, first used in 2004's <em>Doom 3</em>, your seven-year test of patience is nearly over. John Carmack used yesterday's Halloween opportunity to burst out of a monster closet (on Twitter) declaring, "doom 3 source is packaged and tested, we are waiting on final lawyer clearance for release."<br />
	<br />
	And while seven years seems like just enough time to ensure the absence of commercial viability for the tech, remember <em>Prey 2</em> will be using a modified version, which <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/18/prey-2-producer-on-taking-new-direction-with-capable-id-tech/">producer Matt Bisenius called "capable."</a> We're also going to take this opportunity to prematurely mark 2018 down in our calendars, for the <em>Rage</em> / id Tech 5 source code release.</p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/11/01/doom-3-source-code-packaged-and-tested-waiting-on-legal-ok/">Doom 3 source code 'packaged and tested,' waiting on legal OK</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 01 Nov 2011 12:30:00 EST. In a refreshing act of commenting on rumors and speculation, Bethesda has shot down the assertion that id Software's work on <em>Doom 4</em> had been "indefinitely postponed." Kotaku relayed the story from a source "claiming" to be close to the publisher, and suggesting that <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/doom-4"><em>Doom 4</em></a> development had been jettisoned in response to <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/game/rage">Rage</a>'s </em>rough landing.<br />
<br />
Pete Hines, VP of PR and Marketing at Bethesda Softworks, <a href="http://twitter.com/#!/DCDeacon/status/127376777755635712">tweeted</a>: "Re: DOOM 4 rumor, games are done when they are done and no title under development at id has been postponed --indefinitely or otherwise." In response to another journalist, Hines <a href="http://twitter.com/#!/DCDeacon/status/127362822731599872">described</a> the rumor as "complete bollocks." Hey, PR folks? More of this, please.<br />
<br />
Though it may not be officially postponed -- strangled in its bed because a sibling brought home a mixed report card -- <em>Doom 4</em> (working title) isn't likely to arrive any time soon. This is id Software, and the game was <em>only</em> announced in 2008, roughly a year after we <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/11/id-software-debuts-new-engine-at-apple-conference/">first heard about <em>Rage</em></a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/21/bethesda-shoots-down-doom-4-postponement-rumors/">Bethesda shoots down Doom 4 postponement rumors</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 21 Oct 2011 10:20:00 EST. For us, <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/game/rage">Rage</a></em> was <em>"</em>a scaffolding for a game of bolder ideas, ideas which, for whatever reason, aren't realized." The general feeling from other reviews is that it's a well-made effort from veteran studio id Software, though gameplay isn't anything better than what's out there now. The game is floating a metacritic score in the low 80s, with review scores <a href="http://www.metacritic.com/game/xbox-360/rage/critic-reviews">scattered like buckshot</a>.

		<a href="http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/119/1197972p1.html">IGN</a> (<strong>85/100</strong>): "<em>Rage</em> starts to drag toward the second half after most of the mechanics and upgrades are introduced because the fictional world isn't very interesting. Despite the lack of genuinely exciting context, all the content packed into <em>Rage</em> is still a blast to play, including the surprisingly entertaining car combat mode and co-operative challenges. <a href="http://www.giantbomb.com/rage/61-20672/reviews/">Giant Bomb</a> (<strong>80/100</strong>): "Even if <em>Rage</em> were the worst game to come out in a long while, it would still arguably be the best-looking one. The sheer complexity of texture and detail packed into every one of the game's environments is nothing short of staggering, especially in the two town hubs that you'll return to again and again between missions."</li>

It comes from a different kind of Id, one that would rather play with existing conventions than reinvent them. Conversely, it's the same Id that puts look and feel on the same high pillar, and it's impossible to call <em>Rage</em> badly-composed. I just don't think it's going to be remembered as anything but a sleeper hit of the fall of 2011. </span>"</li>

Enemies get tougher, and the repeated pattern of rooms filling with monsters - which must be killed before, say, a door falls off its hinges - begins to drag. Objectives, meanwhile, rarely move beyond simple fetch quests. There's a fine line between sticking to what you're best at and being stuck in your ways, and id occasionally crosses it."</li>

<br />
Those of you who play vidya games primarily on consoles may have insulated yourself from an increasingly common scourge facing your PC gaming brethren: problematic PC ports. While we're sorry to say that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/rage"><em>Rage</em></a> is suffering from some launch-day issues, the PC gaming godfathers at id Software aren't abandoning the platform. So put down those pitchforks. And torches.<br />
<br />
The above video is a good example of the issue: textures pop-in every time the camera moves. It would appear the high-res MegaTextures that id's John Carmack has been talking about for years are being dropped from memory immediately and not streaming in quickly enough. The Xbox 360 release, underpowered relative to the gaming PC in this video, exhibits very little if any texture pop-in which sort of puts the blame purely on your friend and ours: graphics card drivers!<br />
<br />
Bethesda Blog says that, in addition to the texture issues, there are also screen tearing problems but insists that both problems "can be attributed to driver issues" which id Software is "currently working with Nvidia and AMD to resolve [...] as quickly as possible."<br />
<br />
For AMD graphics card users, "you should not use" the beta driver that Bethesda shared yesterday. The <em>Battlefield 3</em> beta drivers will crash to desktop "100% with those drivers," and Beth Blog recommends updating "to the most recent driver when AMD updates, which we're told will be in a few hours." Nvidia users "should try updating Rage to the current beta driver" and Beth Blog will let everyone know when that's available. Be patient, PC gamer. It's been seven years since the last internally developed id Software game; another day or so isn't going to kill you.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/04/psa-rage-is-having-issues-on-pc-fixes-incoming/">PSA: Rage is having issues on PC, fixes incoming</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 04 Oct 2011 17:40:00 EST. Frankly, we're not sure what's better, the fact that there's a <em>Wolfenstein 3D</em> room in <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/rage"><em>Rage</em></a>, or imagining the reactions from gamers too young to know what <em>Wolfenstein 3D</em> is.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/04/rages-wolfenstein-room-is-filled-with-pixelated-treasure/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Rage's Wolfenstein room is filled with pixelated treasure</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/04/rages-wolfenstein-room-is-filled-with-pixelated-treasure/">Rage's Wolfenstein room is filled with pixelated treasure</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 04 Oct 2011 16:10:00 EST. <em>RAGE</em> isn't what you think it is.<br />
<br />
In fact, it's easiest to tell you what <em>RAGE</em> isn't right away. It's nothing like Fallout 3. It's nothing like Borderlands. It's not an RPG, though Id and Bethesda have used <a href="http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/96607-Rage-to-Have-Economy-Crafting" target="_blank">RPG terminology</a> in describing it. It's not much of an open world. It's not very big. It's not very long.<br />
<br />
And unfortunately, it's not the return to prominence that Id fans have been hoping for.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/rage-8-2-11-preview/">Rage (8/2/11 preview)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/rage-8-2-11-preview/#4338926"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/08/shot00060_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/rage-8-2-11-preview/#4338927"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/08/shot00684_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/rage-8-2-11-preview/#4338928"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/08/shot00730_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/rage-8-2-11-preview/#4338929"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/08/shot00764_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/rage-8-2-11-preview/#4338930"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/08/shot00777_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/04/rage-review/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>RAGE review: Anger management</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/04/rage-review/">RAGE review: Anger management</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 04 Oct 2011 00:00:00 EST. You didn't think <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/rage"><em>Rage</em></a> was only about the relationship between a fallen-to-Earth Ark dweller and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/12/rage-dev-diary-introduces-the-superhero-john-goodman/">wasteland superhero John Goodman</a>, did you? As this latest walkthrough can attest, it's also about carefully angling rockets to murder faraway goons. Oh, and wearing <em>totally sweet</em> deer antlers as a warrior helmet, naturally.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/29/rage-walkthrough-explores-the-murderous-mysteries-of-jackal-cany/">Rage walkthrough explores the murderous mysteries of Jackal Canyon</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 29 Sep 2011 19:00:00 EST.
