Developer Illfonic announced the news on its Facebook page, noting that the servers were being run by THQ and "cannot be maintained anymore." The PC servers, however, will remain online courtesy of Illfonic itself.

Nexuiz is currently slated to be sold off in an upcoming auction of more THQ properties this April, alongside the likes of Darksiders, Homeworld and Red Faction.
Nexuiz servers shut down on Xbox 360 originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 27 Feb 2013 22:30:00 EST. If the game tickles your fancy during that brief period of care/money-free play time, it can be permanently purchased for $2.50 during the next 40 or so hours.

Look, just because we found Nexuiz a little bland doesn't mean we're going to stop you from getting a good deal on it.

It's circa 1999, and I'm in my freshman college dorm room, playing a game on my Windows 98 computer. It uses a clunky CRT monitor that takes up most of my desk, but on that monitor a series of images flashes by -- walls, a floor, a skybox overhead, more walls, more floors. Quickly, there's a flash of an colorful icon on the screen, and in first-person view I bound towards it. Just as I grab the quad-damage and jump off a cliff, an opponent appears in my peripheral. While falling through the air, I instantly move my mouse around just so, click the button, and my rocket lands perfectly alongside the enemy avatar, bursting it into a spray of gory red pixels.

A real-life cry of anguish is heard from down the hall, where my floormate has just had to click to respawn. I smile, and run off to look for more prey.

That's the feeling that made playing Quake 2 so magical back in the day, and Nexuiz is a direct descendant of that line. It was originally an open source shooter based off of the Quake engine, and developer IllFonic has now remade the game in CryEngine 3, set for release on Xbox Live Arcade next month. And though the Microsoft booth at CES 2012 is a long way away from my dorm room in both space and time, just a few minutes of gameplay pointed me right back to that formative experience.
It looks like grassroots-turned-XBLA/PSN CryEngine 3 arena shooter Nexuiz has found itself a publisher, bringing it one step closer to meeting the winter 2011 release window originally slated for the title. According to an Australian Classification Board filing, <strike>Capcom</strike> has landed the gig of bringing multiplayer mayhem to American living rooms, while its international publishing partner THQ will handle the legwork in the land down under.

Update: It seems THQ may be the publisher after all. Capcom USA told Joystiq this was an error in the listing. "Capcom does work with THQ Australia on a number of our titles, so this may have just been an easy mistake. We are not working on this." We're told THQ Australia is working to correct the information.

We still don't know any release date or pricing information, but ratings filings are usually a good indication of logistical specifics in our near future.
THQ listed as Nexuiz publisher [update: it won't be Capcom] originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 05 Dec 2011 22:00:00 EST. Sometimes a story comes along that's so odd it actually short-circuits the part of the Joystiq Hive Mind that's supposed to make fun of stuff. We've attacked Ghetto Golf, a thugged-out mix of street golfing and guns that's in need of a publisher, from every angle, but we're just not up to the task of being more entertaining or compelling than the news itself. So we'll give it to you straight.

Ghetto Golf is a planned downloadable tile being created by Illfonic, a game studio founded by one of the guys from Tony! Toni! Tone! Also, this line is in MTV Multiplayer's article about the game: "One of the playable scenes they showed involved the hero Vonte needing to use his exploding golf ball to blow up a car that someone was ghost-riding."

... Honestly, what are we supposed to do with that?
Ghetto Golf is a real game that needs a publisher originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 13 Apr 2009 20:00:00 EST.
