This makes <em>Torment</em> the most-funded gaming software ever on Kickstarter, as well as the second-most funded gaming project in general, bested only by the $8.59 million raised to get Ouya off the ground.<br /><br /><em>Torment</em>'s Kickstarter has been a runaway success since it began on March 6, earning the totality of its original $900,000 goal in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/03/06/torment-tides-of-numenera-meets-kickstarter-goal-raises-over/">less than 24 hours</a>. Since then, developer inXile Entertainment has added <em>Planescape: Torment</em> lead designer <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/04/03/torment-passes-3-5-million-adds-chris-avellone-to-team/">Chris Avellone</a> to the project, in addition to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/04/02/torment-tides-of-numenera-delayed-a-few-months-beyond-dec-2014/">delaying</a> the game past its original December 2014 release window and into 2015.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/04/05/torment-kickstarter-closes-at-over-4-1-million-most-funded-gam/">Torment Kickstarter closes at over $4.1 million, most-funded game in Kickstarter history</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 05 Apr 2013 20:00:00 EST. His position on the Torment team was a stretch goal for the game's Kickstarter, and his arrival on the team marks the passing of an impossible-sounding $3.5 million milestone - including about $67,000 in direct PayPal contributions.<br /><br />Kingkiller Chronicle series author Patrick Rothfuss has also joined up, his presence promised as a $3.25 million stretch goal. Both he and Avellone will contribute companion characters in addition to their other writing and design work.<br /><br /><em>Torment</em> has yet to complete its massive Kickstarter drive, but the as-yet notional game has already been <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/04/02/torment-tides-of-numenera-delayed-a-few-months-beyond-dec-2014/">delayed into 2015</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/04/03/torment-passes-3-5-million-adds-chris-avellone-to-team/">Torment passes $3.5 million, adds Chris Avellone to team</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 03 Apr 2013 15:00:00 EST. Your support has exceeded our expectations. It is clear to us that to create as high quality a final product as we desire, and as you deserve, we're going to want more time than we had in our original schedule," Project Lead Kevin Saunders wrote in a <a href="http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/inxile/torment-tides-of-numenera/posts/443426">Kickstarter update</a>.<br /><br />Saunders says that thanks to fans providing "enough resources to increase <em>Torment</em>'s scope and quality bar," the team will use funds beyond the initial request of $900K to allow more time for "design, [iteration], polish and more."<br /><br />Currently, <em>Torment: Tides of Numenera</em>'s crowd-funding support rests at over $3.3 million. The developer has also added a number of stretch goals and items to acquire with a few extra dollars, including a digital comic from <em>The Kingkiller Chronicle</em> author Patrick Rothfuss.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/04/02/torment-tides-of-numenera-delayed-a-few-months-beyond-dec-2014/">Torment: Tides of Numenera delayed 'a few months' beyond Dec. 2014 release</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 02 Apr 2013 21:15:00 EST. What you're looking at, project lead Kevin Saunders tells us, is an environment called The Bloom, which also happens to very much be a living creature. Yes, it's both a bustling commercial hub and a "semi-sentient predator" - sounds like Manhattan to us.<br /><br />The <em>Torment</em> Kickstarter washed past its $900,000 goal, amassing $1 million in just 8 hours. The campaign for the PC, Mac, and Linux game has broken more than a few stretch goals since then, unlocking everything from new areas, character companions, and novellas to developer inXile bringing in a live orchestra for the music. The traditional late Kickstarter surge should see the fundraiser past the $3.5 million stretch goal, at which point Obsidian's Chris Avellone, who was the lead designer of <em>Planescape: Torment</em>, will join <em>Torment</em>'s design team.<br /><br />Click <a href="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2013/04/bprrender3-27a.jpg?9910">here</a> for a larger look at <em>Torment</em>'s first screenshot.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/04/01/torment-tides-of-numenera-gets-its-first-screenshot/">Torment: Tides of Numenera gets its first screenshot</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 01 Apr 2013 09:00:00 EST. Just 24 hours after its launch, the campaign for the <em>Planescape: Torment</em>-inspired RPG has been backed by over 30,000 people and has raised <a href="http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/inxile/torment-tides-of-numenera">over $1.7 million</a>, nearly doubling its $900,000 goal with 29 days left to go. So yeah, it's not doing too badly.<br /><br />Developer inXile laid out some early stretch goals yesterday, with two already eclipsed at $1.2 million and $1.5 million. That means players will be able to choose their characters' gender, with "appropriate reactivity" from non-player characters built in, and that writers Murs Lafferty and Tony Evans will join the team. Lafferty was nominated for last year's John W. Campbell award for Best New Writer in Science Fiction or Fantasy, while Evans can boast the likes of BioWare and Obsidian on his CV.<br /><br /><strike>If</strike> When the campaign reaches $2 million, which at this rate it'll have done by the time you're reading this, inXile will enlist Monte Cook, the creator of the <a href="http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1433901524/numenera-a-new-roleplaying-game-from-monte-cook">Numenera tabletop RPG</a>, to add his talents to <em>Torment</em>'s writing team. That stretch goal also means inXile brings in a live orchestra as well as further compositions on the musical side of things, and on the gameplay side a fifth player companion described as a "changing ball of goo."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/03/07/torment-is-kickstarters-fastest-ever-to-1m-clears-1-7m-in-fi/">Torment is Kickstarter's fastest ever to $1M, clears $1.7M in first day</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 07 Mar 2013 10:15:00 EST. As the "Last Castoff," the last incarnation of the Changing God, you find yourself hunted by the "Angel of Entropy" in a world full of mysterious, magical ruins. You can read much, much more about the storyline and setting on the <a href="http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/inxile/torment-tides-of-numenera">Kickstarter page</a>. <br /><br /><em>Torment</em> is being developed in Unity for release on PC, Mac, and Linux. In its first morning, the drive has already exceeded $86,000 of its $900,000 goal, with the total rapidly growing. inXile has proven to be good at Kickstarter - or its fans just that ravenous for old-school RPGs - as it <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/04/17/wasteland-kickstarter-raises-over-3-million/">raised over $3 million</a> for <em>Wasteland 2</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/03/06/torment-tides-of-numenera-is-inxiles-new-kickstarter/">'Torment: Tides of Numenera' is inXile's new Kickstarter</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 06 Mar 2013 09:30:00 EST. Brian Fargo - the InXile Entertainment founder who <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/12/04/planescape-torment-writer-ponders-sequel-fargo-owns-torment-ip/">has the Torment rights</a> and once ran the original game's developer, Interplay - has said a successor is in the works, though there are a few caveats fans should consider.<br /><br />For one, the sequel will ditch the <em>Planescape</em> setting for the Numenera role-playing system, the <a href="http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1433901524/numenera-a-new-roleplaying-game-from-monte-cook">Kickstarter-funded</a> brainchild of Monte Cook blending together sci-fi and fantasy elements to emphasize "story and ideas over mechanics." Cook should be a memorable name to those who played the <em>Planescape</em> pen-and-paper campaign setting, having helped design and write that series and numerous other games for Wizards of the Coast back in the day. "The more we explored the Numenera setting, the clearer it became that it's a natural fit for a Torment game," Fargo told <a href="http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2013/01/09/planescape-torment-sequel/">Rock Paper Shotgun</a>.<br /><br />And with the new setting, Fargo suggests that this sequel will be less so in the literal sense and more so in the ideas <em>Planescape: Torment</em> presented to players. "Rather than overt links, we are trying to recapture the feeling that players experienced through PST -both while playing it and after having completed a playthrough. We will remain true to the essence of PST, but we'll also be looking for ways to improve the areas in which PST could have been even better."<br /><br />The new Torment game is still a ways off, "very early" in the pre-production phases, Fargo says. "We have a basic story outline, design sketches of the major characters, and thematic concepts defined," Fargo said, adding that with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/wasteland-2"><em>Wasteland 2</em></a> in full production, InXile can't focus too great of resources to working on this new Torment game.<br /><br />However, with writers and concept artists finished their early stages work on <em>Wasteland 2</em>, they're freed up. "There will be some other surprise talent that I'll announce later on but I thought it important to stress the heritage of the great team we have." As for funding this sequel, Fargo is unsurprisingly considering Kickstarter.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/01/09/spiritual-successor-to-planescape-torment-in-very-early-stage/">Spiritual successor to Planescape: Torment in 'very early' stages</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 09 Jan 2013 22:30:00 EST. In addition, the satirical RPG <em>Bard's Tale</em> has been updated to bundle in the 1985 <em>Bard's Tale</em> game and its two sequels. That's a lot of light-hearted role-playing for $2.50. <br /><br />These deals are only available until 10AM Pacific (1PM Eastern) October 22. If you'd like to continue the celebration of inXile's career outside of this Steam deal, there's always <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/01/hunted-the-demons-forge-review/"><em>Hunted: The Demon's Forge</em></a> and the <em>Line Rider </em>series.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/10/16/bards-tale-and-choplifter-hd-on-sale-for-inxiles-10th-annivers/">Bard's Tale and Choplifter HD on sale for inXile's 10th anniversary</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 16 Oct 2012 13:30:00 EST. The project <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/03/15/wasteland-2-kickstarter-exceeds-goal-and-is-still-going/">hit its goal of $900k</a> easily on the nearly ubiquitous crowdfunding service, and ended up with nearly $2.9 million.<br /> <br /> Over on the official blog, the developers say they're <a href="http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/inxile/wasteland-2/posts">releasing this early shot for feedback</a>, and that they're also almost done with the game's main site, which is where backers will be able to update their support if they'd like to do so. The props found above are largely part of Unity's own database of in-game items, customized for the <em>Wasteland</em> world. As the team members learn to use the Unity engine, they're hoping this is only the beginning of the way the game looks.<br /> <br /> Presumably, they'll will have some help: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/03/30/obsidian-will-help-with-wasteland-2-if-kickstarter-reaches-2-1/">Obsidian Entertainment promised to pitch in</a> if the Kickstarter reached at least $2.1 million. </div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/07/23/first-wasteland-2-screenshot-is-only-the-beginning-of-developmen/">First Wasteland 2 screenshot is only the beginning of development</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 23 Jul 2012 23:00:00 EST. It is due in no small part to the aid of EA, the publisher of the original <em>Wasteland</em>.<br /><br />InXile's Brian Fargo says including the classic PC game was the biggest request during <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/04/17/wasteland-kickstarter-raises-over-3-million/"><em>Wasteland 2</em>'s Kickstarter campaign</a>. "Fortunately EA has continued to support us on this project and has granted us the ability to bring the original to the players," Fargo said. "It is great to be able to make Wasteland available for those feeling nostalgic or who want to experience it for the first time. It certainly will not be a pre-requisite to understand <em>Wasteland 2</em>, but it adds some extra flavor if you did play the prequel."<br /><br /><em>Wasteland 2</em> is currently on track to launch sometime next year.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/07/10/wasteland-2-will-include-the-original-wasteland/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Wasteland 2 will include the original Wasteland</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/07/10/wasteland-2-will-include-the-original-wasteland/">Wasteland 2 will include the original Wasteland</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 10 Jul 2012 22:30:00 EST. The <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/03/30/obsidian-will-help-with-wasteland-2-if-kickstarter-reaches-2-1/">Kickstarter</a> for inXile Entertainment's <em>Wasteland 2</em> ended at $2,933,252, well over the $900,000 goal and $800,000 more than was <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/03/30/obsidian-will-help-with-wasteland-2-if-kickstarter-reaches-2-1/">required</a> for Obsidian to join in on development.<br /><br />Oh, and then fans kicked in <em>another</em> $112,089 through <a href="http://wasteland.inxile-entertainment.com/pledge.php">PayPal</a>.<br /><br />Of course, some of that money will go to Amazon, PayPal, and Kickstarter fees, and producing and shipping prizes, a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/04/16/star-command-devs-transparent-about-where-kickstarter-funding-we/">lesson</a> all Kickstarter users should remember. After the game is finished, 5% of the profits from the final release will be put into other Kickstarter projects, as part of a <a href="http://www.kickingitforward.org/">"Kicking it Forward" initiative</a>. Perhaps the stimulation of the Kickstarter economy through this project will prevent the world from becoming a <em>Wasteland</em>-esque nightmare for another couple of weeks.<br /><br /><strong>Update:</strong> Corrected the amount going to "Kicking it Forward."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/04/17/wasteland-kickstarter-raises-over-3-million/">Wasteland 2 Kickstarter raises over $3 million</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 17 Apr 2012 11:45:00 EST. With 17 days of funding left to go and $1.7 million already pledged, Fargo's company inXile wants to hit $2.1 million on Kickstarter, after which Avellone will agree to work directly with the design team on the project.<br /><br />Fargo and Avellone's relationship goes back to the better days of publisher Interplay, where the pair worked on titles like <em>Fallout</em> 1 and 2, and <em>Planescape: Torment</em>.<br /><br />"Wasteland is one of my favorite RPGs of all time, and when Brian asked if I wanted to work on the sequel, I jumped at the chance," said Avellone. "While I've worked on <em>Fallout 2</em> and <em>Fallout: New Vegas</em>, getting the chance to work on the spiritual predecessor to the Fallout franchise is a honor."<br /><br />Developer Obsidian will also lend a hand in the game's creation, providing "experience they have in the development of RPG games and tools to inXile."<br /><br />Fargo stated, "Obsidian has an incredible library of story, dialog and design tools that they have used to create hits like <em>Neverwinter Nights 2, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II</em>, and of course, <em>Fallout: New Vegas</em>. Regardless of the tech we use to develop the game, experience with these tools will help us efficiently design the game without wasting time and resources on the tools needed for development."<br /><br />If you're looking to support the dream, you know <a href="http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/inxile/wasteland-2">where to go</a>.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/03/30/obsidian-will-help-with-wasteland-2-if-kickstarter-reaches-2-1/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Obsidian will help with Wasteland 2 if Kickstarter reaches $2.1 million</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/03/30/obsidian-will-help-with-wasteland-2-if-kickstarter-reaches-2-1/">Obsidian will help with Wasteland 2 if Kickstarter reaches $2.1 million</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 30 Mar 2012 20:00:00 EST. One of those tiers was $1.5 million, which at the time seemed kind of ridiculous. It has since been pledged by backers, meaning <em>Wasteland 2</em> will also be available on Mac OS X and Linux at launch.<br /><br /><em>Wasteland 2</em> has <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/03/15/wasteland-2-kickstarter-exceeds-goal-and-is-still-going/">well exceeded its original goal</a> of raising $900,000 on Kickstarter, and there are still 24 days to go. The Kickstarter has started to pick up some momentum, it seems, as the total currently sits at just over $967K, with another 32 days to go.<br /><br />As stated on the project's site, the goal is actually to raise $1 million, but inXile head Brian Fargo had agreed to put $100K of his own scratch on the line -- it's looking like that won't be necessary any more. Which isn't to say there aren't plans should the team raise even more money. If they reach $1.25 million, the extra dough will go to "making the world bigger, adding more maps, more divergent stories and even more music."<br /><br />If the fundraiser reaches $1.5 million, that depth goes further, with, "more adventures to play, more challenges to deal with, and a greater level of complexity to the entire storyline. We'll add more environments, story elements, and characters to make the rich world come alive even more." Oh, also, it'll come to OS X. So, hey, how about we get things to $1.5 million so your buds at Joystiq can play the game on their writing machines? That'd be just capital.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/03/15/wasteland-2-kickstarter-exceeds-goal-and-is-still-going/">Wasteland 2 Kickstarter exceeds goal (and is still going)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 15 Mar 2012 10:40:00 EST. Just as inXile head Brian Fargo <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/02/16/inxile-plans-to-launch-kickstarter-drive-for-wasteland-reboot/">promised</a>, a Kickstarter page for<em> Wasteland 2</em> is now live. The goal is $900,000 -- as of writing this post, $380,897 had been raised.<br /><br /><em>Wasteland 2</em> will be a DRM-free PC title. "It'll finally be the game worthy to be a Wasteland sequel, as challenging and rewarding as the original, with all added capacity and dazzle of games today," the Kickstarter page says. Many of the original designers are returning for the sequel, and Fallout composer Mark Morgan will create the tunes. Jason Anderson, co-creator of Fallout, will handle <em>Wasteland 2</em>'s story.<br /><br />Fans will be able to offer input during the development of <em>Wasteland 2</em> through the forums. And of course there are the usual Kickstarter benefits, ranging from the soundtrack to various special boxed copies of <em>Wasteland 2</em> and a collectible coin and cloth map. <em>Wasteland 2</em> is slated to launch in October of 2013.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/03/13/you-can-now-help-fund-wasteland-2/">You can now help fund Wasteland 2</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 13 Mar 2012 20:00:00 EST. After one of the most successful campaigns ever with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/02/09/double-fine-breaks-kickstarter-funding-record/">Double Fine</a>, inXile Entertainment has announced intentions to start its own Kickstarter fundraiser.<br /><br />The <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/hunted-the-demons-forge"><em>Hunted: The Demon's Forge</em></a> developer wants to use Kickstarter to fund a reboot of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wasteland_(video_game)"><em>Wasteland</em></a>, CEO Brian Fargo told <a href="http://pc.ign.com/articles/121/1218794p1.html">IGN</a>. Fargo, who recently acquired the rights to the classic PC RPG, is one of the creators -- apparently fans have been bugging him for a new game since they saw Double Fine achieve success. Soon after, Fargo was having meetings and mapping out a production schedule.<br /><br />The idea is only 48 hours old at this point, but Fargo is on board. He likes the Kickstarter model since it would eradicate publisher influence on the project, but warns that a reboot would likely need a million dollars.<br /><br />Fargo hopes to launch the Kickstarter campaign sometime next month.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/02/16/inxile-plans-to-launch-kickstarter-drive-for-wasteland-reboot/">inXile plans to launch Kickstarter drive for Wasteland reboot</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 16 Feb 2012 21:30:00 EST. You're a die hard PC Battlefield player, and simply won't play it anywhere else. You refuse to use standalone clients for launching your favorite PC games. Do these things describe you? Then you're probably a big fan of EA's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/origin">Origin</a> game service, which will be getting content from 11 publishers "in the coming months," according to a press release issued by EA this morning.<br /><br />The first game to be added is <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/01/24/rift-available-on-eas-origin-today/">the aforementioned</a> <em>Rift</em> from Trion Worlds, with games from Robot Entertainment, CD Projekt RED, Freebird Games, Recoil Games, Autumn Games, 1C Company, Inxile Entertainment, Paradox Interactive, Core Learning, and N3V Games joining <em>Rift</em>'s ranks soon. EA says that more specific information on pricing and release dates will be offered in the near future via Origin, so keep an eye out while you're remaining steadfast in your stance against that <em>other</em> major digital retailer.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/24/ea-adds-cd-projekt-red-paradox-and-nine-other-publishers-to-or/">EA adds CD Projekt RED, Paradox, and nine other publishers to Origin</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 24 Jan 2012 21:00:00 EST. We've known since June that Konami was prepping a landing space for <em>Choplifter HD</em> on XBLA, PSN and PC, but it seems the convoy won't be here for some time. Or, actually, it could be tomorrow.* All we know is Konami and developer inXile Entertainment are deploying <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/choplifter-hd"><em>Choplifter HD</em></a> sometime this "winter" and, yeah, we're technically in that winter timeframe.<br />
<br />
In addition to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/03/choplifter-hd-also-headed-to-xbla-features-zombie-mode/">the zombie mode</a> featuring a cameo from Super Meat Boy that was introduced a few months back, Duke Nukem will also show up, along with cameos from "from some of the videogame industry's most legendary leading men." Why no women? As much as we don't want to think of Lara Croft as a decomposing zombie, it'd <em>still be pretty neat</em>.<br />
<br />
<em><small>*It won't be out tomorrow. We promise you.</small></em><br />

For example, we sometimes neglect to give independent developers our coverage love (or loverage, if you will) as we get caught up in AAA, AAAA or the rare quintuple-A titles. To remedy that, we're giving indies the chance to create their own loverage and sell you, the fans, on their studios and products. This week we talk with inXile president Brian Fargo about his company's reboot of a familiar franchise, <i>Choplifter HD</i>.</font></small>

<strong>What's your game called, and what's it about?</strong><br />
<br />
Our big project for 2011 is <em>Choplifter HD</em> for PSN, XBLA and PC. We are taking a fresh approach to the classic helicopter rescue game <em>Choplifter</em> that was a huge hits in the '80s. People in the industry have really fond memories of the game and we intended to do it justice. In fact I brought the original creator Dan Gorlin on as a consultant he said it looks like the best adaption he had seen yet. It will be a very entertaining game.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/choplifter-hd-e3-2011/">Choplifter HD (E3 2011)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/choplifter-hd-e3-2011/#4229298"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/choplifterhd-key-art1024x554_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/choplifter-hd-e3-2011/#4229299"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/e3presschickendeath1024x576_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/choplifter-hd-e3-2011/#4229300"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/e3pressgoats1024x576_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/choplifter-hd-e3-2011/#4229301"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/e3presshelp1024x768_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/choplifter-hd-e3-2011/#4229302"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/e3presshospital1024x768_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/15/the-joystiq-indie-pitch-choplifter-hd/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Joystiq Indie Pitch: Choplifter HD</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/15/the-joystiq-indie-pitch-choplifter-hd/">The Joystiq Indie Pitch: Choplifter HD</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 15 Jun 2011 19:58:00 EST. <em>Choplifter HD</em>, which is <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/28/choplifter-hd-airlifting-nostalgia-to-psn-and-pc-this-fall/">more than a basic HD-ification</a> of the classic '80s game, will also be available on Xbox Live Arcade -- the game was previously announced only for PSN and PC. <a href="http://www.destructoid.com/preview-choplifter-hd-202051.phtml">Destructoid</a> has a video showing off lots of gameplay, the zombie mode and a totally random appearance by <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/super-meat-boy">Super Meat Boy</a>.<br />
<br />
The deeper look at the gameplay reveals that even after 20-something years some things in <em>Choplifter</em> just don't change. Like, squashing hostages, something that is sure to drive a whole new generation of the gaming population <em>absolutely nuts</em>! Also, when you aren't squashing hostages, it appears you'll still be waiting on them to get their butts in the choppa. Oh, how we long for a "move out of the landing zone and run to the chopper like your life depends on it" button.<br />

Your first hour in the desperately dark world of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/hunted-the-demons-forge"><em>Hunted: The Demon's Forge</em></a> is not going to be a pleasant one. The preface-free introduction doesn't exactly instill a sense of literary excellence. The characters presented could generously be described as "grating." Combat is limited to a fairly uninspired mix of plain ol' shooting and plain ol' stabbing. There's a troubling realization that the game contains <em>items</em>, but no <em>inventory</em>, which everyone should be able to agree is absolute madness<em>.</em><br />
<br />
Slowly but surely, however, the game's oddly-shaped puzzle pieces begin to plop into place. See, most of the issues observed above are never really remedied -- instead, developer InXile Entertainment seems to have made an unconventional and fascinating decision to thoroughly nurture a small handful of <em>other</em> genuinely great ideas.<br />

As you inch along in the darkness, you reassure yourself that the noise is just the sound of a game designer rubbing his cello bow all over a kitchen pot. While the latest <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/hunted-the-demons-forge"><em>Hunted: The Demon's Forge</em></a> behind-the-scenes video is sadly devoid of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/28/new-hunted-video-focuses-on-story-characters/">Lucy Lawless</a>, it is positively packed to the gills with the game's monstrous baddies. From the brutish minotaur to the svelte assassin, there should be plenty to keep players hacking and slashing.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/13/watch-this-monstrous-new-hunted-the-demons-forge-video/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Watch this monstrous new Hunted: The Demon's Forge video</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/13/watch-this-monstrous-new-hunted-the-demons-forge-video/">Watch this monstrous new Hunted: The Demon's Forge video</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 13 May 2011 04:00:00 EST. When it comes to fantasy RPGs, nothing is more important than the setting in which all the looting takes place. Judging by this new dev diary, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/hunted-the-demons-forge"><em>Hunted: The Demon's Forge</em></a> seems to have this fact on lockdown, thanks in no small part to the inclusion of some user-generated dungeon tools.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/06/hunted-the-demons-forge-trailer-whips-up-a-world/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Hunted: The Demon's Forge trailer whips up a world</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/06/hunted-the-demons-forge-trailer-whips-up-a-world/">Hunted: The Demon's Forge trailer whips up a world</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 06 May 2011 20:30:00 EST. The latest behind-the-scenes video for <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/hunted-the-demons-forge">Hunted: The Demon's Forge</a> examines the game's rich story. The developers at inXile looked to the ancient Mayans for inspiration. Long ago, those proud people ... wait, where are you going? Okay, okay, it also has Lucy Lawless. Happy now?<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/28/new-hunted-video-focuses-on-story-characters/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>New Hunted video focuses on story, characters</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/28/new-hunted-video-focuses-on-story-characters/">New Hunted video focuses on story, characters</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 28 Apr 2011 21:20:00 EST. In this behind the scenes look at <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/hunted-the-demons-forge/">Hunted: The Demon's Forge</a>,</em> inXile hammers out the basics of its "modern, co-op, cover-based action game" -- you know, where you're "running through dungeons and killing monsters with really cool swords" and "amazing spells" and stuff.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/21/the-forging-of-hunted-the-demons-forge/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The forging of Hunted: The Demon's Forge</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/21/the-forging-of-hunted-the-demons-forge/">The forging of Hunted: The Demon's Forge</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 21 Apr 2011 21:30:00 EST. <em>Hunted: The Demon's Forge</em> was plagued by a number of issues, both technical and fundamental, when Joystiq last saw it <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/28/hunted-the-demons-forge-preview/">two months ago</a>. At Bethesda's recent "BFG 2011" media event, developer inXile Entertainment brought a markedly improved build, if not a less generic game title.<br />
<br />
"Feedback has been a large part of the process," David Clayman, associate brand manager for inXile, told me at the event. Gone is the shoddy blocking animation Joystiq encountered in the last build that registered a block no matter if your shield was facing an enemy or not. (inXile has since added an auto-targeting mechanic that turns your character to face the nearest attacking enemy as you begin blocking.) And fixed is the indicator that now more clearly and immediately alerts you to your partner being down and in need of a healing potion.<br />

If the idea of putting together <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/burgertime-hd">burgers in HD</a> wasn't weird enough for you, how about revisiting your old airlifting days on the Apple II via PSN? InXile Entertainment plans on doing just that with <em>Choplifter HD</em>, a project that will supposedly "redefine the helicopter rescue mission for the modern era." And just when we were thinking no one was bold enough to redefine such a mission!<br />
<br />
We were also at the point where we thought InXile had given up on the title -- the company <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/19/inxile-files-new-trademark-for-choplifter/">filed a trademark</a> for a new <em>Choplifter</em> title back in 2009. It seems that the developer has spent those two years filling the game with content, such as a "variety" of helis to control and "more than 20" mission types.<br />
<br />
<em>Choplifter HD'</em>s announcement also details the new, highly unnecessary story. "Players take on the role of an up and coming rescue pilot asked to join the elite, international helicopter rescue team C.H.O.P.R. (Coordinated Helicopter Operations, Preservation and Rescue)," it reads, continuing in the long held gaming tradition of shoehorning ridiculous acronyms into plot lines. We can only hope that the C.H.O.P.R. team is getting some backup from the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/fear">first encounter assault recon</a> folks.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/choplifter-hd/">Choplifter HD</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/choplifter-hd/#4007285"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/03/chopgame-2011-02-25-19-55-10-69-copy_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/choplifter-hd/#4007286"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/03/chopgame-2011-02-25-19-55-51-95-copy_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/choplifter-hd/#4007287"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/03/choplifterhdbright_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/choplifter-hd/#4007289"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/03/choplifterhd_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/28/choplifter-hd-airlifting-nostalgia-to-psn-and-pc-this-fall/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Choplifter HD airlifting nostalgia to PSN and PC this fall</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/28/choplifter-hd-airlifting-nostalgia-to-psn-and-pc-this-fall/">Choplifter HD airlifting nostalgia to PSN and PC this fall</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 28 Mar 2011 14:30:00 EST. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/hunted-the-demons-forge"><em>Hunted: The Demon's Forge</em></a> has a major problem. It's a <em>Gears of War</em> clone, but it also wants to be a deep, character-driven RPG. The issue is that it far too often relies on the gameplay mechanics of the former and doesn't offer the exploration elements of the latter.<br />
<br />
During a recent San Francisco event, I was able to sample not only the introduction of the game, but a later mission in co-op mode. The game opens with a dream sequence, where the brawny and more burly of the two protagonists, Caddoc, is having a nightmare. Within, he catches a glimpse of a buxom, pale-skinned sorceress named Seraphine (voiced by Lucy Lawless) who'll play an integral role in his adventure.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/hunted-the-demons-forge-quakecon/">Hunted: The Demon's Forge (QuakeCon)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/hunted-the-demons-forge-quakecon/#3258435"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/08/12-minotaurcaddocfireouch03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/hunted-the-demons-forge-quakecon/#3258438"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/08/04-1starena2ndwave_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/hunted-the-demons-forge-quakecon/#3258439"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/08/02-minotaurraah_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/hunted-the-demons-forge-quakecon/#3258440"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/08/01-hallofslaughter_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/28/hunted-the-demons-forge-preview/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Hunted: The Demon's Forge preview: Through thick and thin</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/28/hunted-the-demons-forge-preview/">Hunted: The Demon's Forge preview: Through thick and thin</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 28 Feb 2011 14:30:00 EST. <font color="gray"><em>It's time for another titular <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/whats-in-a-name">origin story</a>! Today, Matthew Findley, president of <a href="http://www.inxile-entertainment.com/">inXile Entertainment</a>, explains the creation of a studio name haunting English teachers everywhere</em></font><font color="gray"><em>:</em></font><br />
<br />
I worked with Brian Fargo at Interplay for a number of years and we both left Interplay at the same time. We knew we wanted to stay in video games, so starting a company seemed like a good idea -- he spent 20 years at Interplay and I was there for 13. When we were first out there, trying to figure out what to do next, we kinda felt like we were in exile, and we made fake cards with a fake company name just to have a card to go to E3 with.<br />
<br />
And before we ever thought of the name "inXile," Brian put as his job description on the cards: "Leader in exile." People got such a kick out of that card, we kept saying "in exile, in exile, in exile" so much that we just thought, "Why not make up a new word?" And so we did.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: right;">
<div style="text-align: left;"><font color="gray"><hr width="100%" size="2" style="margin: 0pt;" />
<em>InXile is currently working on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/hunted-the-demons-forge">Hunted: The Demon's Forge</a>, which will launch on the Xbox 360 and PS3 on June 1.<br />

<a href="http://joystiq.com/game/bethesda">Bethesda</a> has always <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/05/04/hunted-the-demons-forge-preview/">made it clear</a> that it wants gamers to associate <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/game/hunted-the-demons-forge">Hunted: The Demon's Forge</a></em> with action games like <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/gears-of-war-3"><em>Gears of War</em></a>. Watching the latest trailer, we'd say "mission accomplished." Honestly, the only thing missing at this point are chainsaws, curb stomps and a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/07/23/gears-of-war-3-producer-wants-carmine-dead/">dead Carmine brother</a>.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/10/hunted-gameplay-trailer-shreds-monsters-guitars/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Hunted gameplay trailer shreds monsters, guitars</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/10/hunted-gameplay-trailer-shreds-monsters-guitars/">Hunted gameplay trailer shreds monsters, guitars</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 10 Feb 2011 13:40:00 EST. The US PlayStation blog has announced that <a href="http://www.sparkworkz.com/">Sparkworkz</a>' <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/super-stacker"><em>Super Stacker</em></a> is <a href="http://blog.us.playstation.com/2010/05/24/coming-tomorrow-to-psn-super-stacker-lined-up-for-ps3/">coming to the PSN tomorrow</a>. For $9.99, you can experience <em>Super Stacker</em>'s over 100 levels of animated shape-stacking mayhem, putting little grunting pieces with faces together in sturdy (and not-so sturdy) constructions. Or, you could, y'know, <a href="http://www.super-stacker.com/">play it online for free</a>.<br />
<br />
That's not quite fair -- the PSN version comes with updated art, co-op and competitive multiplayer and two new modes of gameplay, including one where you'll be exploding stacked blocks of dynamite. But even if that sounds cool (and it kind of does), go play it free first anyway -- if you get your fill of the levels there, you'll have saved yourself $10.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/05/24/super-stacker-flash-game-coming-to-psn-for-9-99/">Super Stacker flash game coming to PSN for $9.99</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 24 May 2010 20:15:00 EST. <div style="text-align: left; ">Brian Fargo is no stranger to the world of video game development, having originally founded Interplay back in 1984. He's worked on titles like the original <em>Bard's Tale</em> and <em>Wasteland, a</em>nd Interplay developed everything from <em>Battle Chess</em> to<em> Fallout </em>to<em> Baldur's Gate. </em>When Interplay was acquired by Titus in 2002, Fargo left and founded InXile Entertainment, which later released an updated <em>Bard's Tale </em>for PS2, Xbox, and PC. Now both Fargo and InXile are moving onto next-generation consoles with the swords and scorcery co-op title <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/hunted-the-demons-forge">Hunted: The Demon's Forge</a></em>.<br />
<br />
We recently spoke to Fargo about the game, which you can find just after the break. But be warned! Just prepare yourself for the sheer about of verbiage manages to foist upon us when we asked what the initial genesis for the game was. It's quite an answer! Read on to see what he has to say about the upcoming title, including why they limited to two characters, the depth of the puzzles in the game, and boob jiggle. Yes, boob jiggle.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/hunted-the-demons-force-05-04-2010/">Hunted: The Demon's Forge (05/04/10)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/hunted-the-demons-force-05-04-2010/#2947127"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/05/hunted05041001_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/hunted-the-demons-force-05-04-2010/#2947128"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/05/hunted05041002_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/hunted-the-demons-force-05-04-2010/#2947129"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/05/hunted05041003_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/hunted-the-demons-force-05-04-2010/#2947130"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/05/hunted05041004_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/hunted-the-demons-force-05-04-2010/#2947131"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/05/hunted05041005_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/05/10/interview-brian-fargo-on-hunted-the-demons-forge/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Interview: Brian Fargo on Hunted: The Demon's Forge</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/05/10/interview-brian-fargo-on-hunted-the-demons-forge/">Interview: Brian Fargo on Hunted: The Demon's Forge</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 10 May 2010 20:00:00 EST. <small><em>Clicked: The Full-sized Gallery</em></small></div>
Bethesda's undoubtedly one of the best developers in the industry; however, as a publisher, it's had its fair share of ups and down. Last year's <em>Wet</em> and <em>Rogue Warrior</em> illustrate both extremes quite well. Earlier this year at GDC, when Bethesda <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/03/15/bethesda-and-inxile-announce-hunted-the-demons-forge/ ">unveiled</a> the clumsily titled <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Hunted-The-Demons-Forge/"><em>Hunted: The Demon's Forge</em></a> - a new co-op dungeon crawler from inXile Entertainment, Interplay-cofounder Brian Fargo's new digs - we immediately wondered which side of that gulf it would live on. Would it be worthy of the Bethesda name on its packaging, alongside promising shooter <em>Brink</em>, surefire-hit <em>Fallout: New Vegas</em>, and id Software's <em>Rage</em>? Fargo certainly thinks so.<br />
<br />
In fact, Fargo is so sure about his new game, that he wasn't afraid to recall the past glory of games like the original <em>Bard's Tale</em> and <em>Wizardry </em>at a recent Bethesda press event, and Fargo had previously introduced the concept, saying "What you're going to see here today is a reimagining of the dungeon crawler, the classic game that got me into this industry." He continued, "It was the <em>Might &amp; Magic</em> series, it was the <em>Ultima</em> series, <em>Dungeon Master</em> from FTL was a bit of a breakthrough product ... that's very much the experience I grew up with." And as action games supplanted the dungeon crawlers, Fargo "felt like the core experience of that good ol' dungeon crawl, getting lost in the dungeon, had sort of fallen away. And it hadn't fallen away because the titles were doing bad. People forgot or something."<br />
<br />
While we don't know if they forgot - <em>Demon's Souls</em>, <em>Torchlight</em>, and <em>Diablo 3</em> say hi! - Fargo's "reimagining" certainly doesn't look like what you imagine when you think dungeon crawl. "The gamer today has a different metaphor for engrossing themselves, which is more the action, <em>Gears of War</em>-type thing," Fargo explains. "So what we need to do is take today's experience and mix those two together but ... we the take you someplace very different, and in the beginning we need to get your attention." Read to to find out where your attention will be going, and to find out if inXile has been successful in grabbing our attention.<br />

If you and your friends are eager to dive into a monster-filled dungeon -- and who isn't -- then <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/bethesda">Bethesda</a> has a thrilling announcement for you: The publisher is handling a new co-op fantasy action game, <em>Hunted: The Demon's Forge</em>, developed by Interplay founder <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brian_Fargo">Brian Fargo's</a> InXile Entertainment. <br />
<br />
Fargo describes <em>Hunted</em> as an "upcoming release that takes us back to our roots," and the screenshots (in our gallery below) paint a pretty clear picture of what that could mean: warriors and archers putting holes in orc-looking things with sharp objects <em>and magic</em>.<br />
