<b>Time played: 3 hours</b><br />
<br />
Portable games are often expected to be light, short-session experiences that you can jump into at any time, understand immediately, and play for minutes at a time. <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/infinite-space">Infinite Space</a></em> is not that at all. It is a deeply complex RPG with several interacting systems, all wrapped in a not-too-friendly interface. In fact, it's pretty much as baroque as you would expect a game about leading fleets of spaceships of your own design to be.<br />

<br />
This video teaches one of the most important techniques in the game: skipping battle scenes. Every action in a ship battle is accompanied by a long sequence in which crew members call out what they're doing and prepare whatever kind of action is to be deployed. It's dramatic, and it lends the game a very "spaceship anime" feel -- but it also takes a long time. So, yeah, you can skip that after the first couple of times.<br />
<br />
The tutorial also covers crew battles and, strangely, recalibrating your touch screen.<br type="_moz" /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/03/24/infinite-space-tutorial-demonstrates-how-to-skip-parts-of-infini/">Infinite Space tutorial demonstrates how to skip parts of Infinite Space</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 24 Mar 2010 14:25:00 EST. <br />
Did you pick up <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/infinite-space"><em>Infinite Space</em></a> yet? The DS <em>spaceventure</em> was released from its docking station by <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/platinum-games">Platinum Games</a> yesterday, and so far the reviews are actually <a href="http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/ds/infinitespace">better than we expected</a>. We've got two more launch trailers to share with you: one above which seems to be the intro to the game (complete with <em>Star Wars</em>-style crawl and the weird narration we've come to expect from this game); and another after the break which will walk you through the game's battle tutorial.<br />
<br />
If you've tried the game out, let us know what you think below. The battle system seems different and the story isn't supposed to be too bad, either. You wouldn't think that <em>an infinite void of open space</em> would have that much going on, but maybe it's worth a shot.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/03/18/infinite-space-puts-two-launch-videos-into-orbit/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Infinite Space puts two launch videos into orbit</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/03/18/infinite-space-puts-two-launch-videos-into-orbit/">Infinite Space puts two launch videos into orbit</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 18 Mar 2010 12:37:00 EST. Like, with a crew and everything? Sega has issued the North American release date for Platinum Games and Nude Maker's <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/infinite-space">Infinite Space</a> </em>for DS. You'll be able to build onto your spaceship, engage in space battles and do other space things on March 16. There's a new trailer above -- not as far above as <em>space</em>, just at the top of this post.<br />
<br />
For some reason, <em>every</em> game from Platinum has been released in the first quarter of the year -- <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/madworld"><em>MadWorld</em></a> in March 2009, <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/bayonetta">Bayonetta</a> </em>in January 2010, and now <em>Infinite Space</em> in March. Will <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/vanquish">Vanquish</a></em> debut in Q1 2011?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/02/24/infinite-space-lands-on-ds-march-16/">Infinite Space lands on DS March 16</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 24 Feb 2010 09:48:00 EST. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/infinite-space"><em>Infinite Space</em></a>, the upcoming DS space RPG from <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/platinum-games">Platinum Games</a>, has <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/platinums-infinite-space-rpg-dated">gotten itself a European release date</a> in the form of March 26th (or as you might call it in Bangladesh, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bangladeshi_Independence_Day">"Independence Day"</a>).<br />
<br />
Strangely, we still haven't heard an official US date yet -- <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/02/infinite-space-launching-spring-2010-animated-trailer-launching/">the closest we've got is Spring 2010</a>, which despite all of the snow you might be seeing lately, is approaching quite quickly. Assuming that the EU and US dates aren't too far off from each other, by the end of March you too might be saying, "I'm... in <em>space</em>!" just like <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/01/11/infinite-space-trailer-has-voice-acting/">the wince-worthy voice acting</a> we've experienced so far.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/02/17/platinumgames-infinite-space-docking-in-europe-on-march-26th/">PlatinumGames' Infinite Space docking in Europe on March 26th</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 17 Feb 2010 09:00:00 EST. It also features voice acting. Yes, those are human voices speaking lines of dialogue from the game. We don't want to make any judgments about the <em>quality</em> of the voice acting, but we can confirm that it <em>is</em>, in fact, voice acting.<br />
<br />
On an unrelated topic, we'd like to talk about the Nintendo DS's volume slider (and the DSi's rocker switch). Isn't it great how the volume can go all the way down? Why, with the volume minimized, you could enjoy all kinds of interesting games, even if there's some kind of audio issue!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/01/11/infinite-space-trailer-has-voice-acting/">Infinite Space trailer has voice acting</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 11 Jan 2010 19:00:00 EST. We figured the line, "Praying, we drift in coffins afloat at sea. It is a good day to die!" that kicks off this second Production I.G. / Gonzo-animated prelude to Platinum Games' space-faring action-RPG, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/infinite-space">Infinite Space</a>, </em>would pretty much be its high point but <em>oh were we ever wrong</em>. In the span of this two-minute short, you've got a <em>heap </em>of space combat (seemingly directed by someone playing a keyboard) and space pirates, including one who's perched atop a <em>space dinosaur</em>. It's easily one of the weirdest things you'll watch today. We'd say <em>the weirdest thing</em>, but the internet's surprising that way.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/22/infinite-space-anime-prelude-part-two-pirates-riding-dinosaurs/">Infinite Space anime prelude part two: Pirates riding dinosaurs</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 22 Jul 2009 18:45:00 EST. The voice acting is pretty much what you'd expect from American anime releases, but it's a small price to pay for <em>comprehension</em>. In this trailer, we see that a crash-landed "Watcher" gives protagonist Yuri the opportunity to build his own spaceship.<br /><br />This trailer comes along with Sega's announcement of a spring 2010 release date in North America. We can only hope it continues releasing translated videos to tide us over.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/infinite-space/">Infinite Space</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/infinite-space/#1122822"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/10/infinite_log_0911_009_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/infinite-space/#1122821"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/10/infinite_module_0911_004_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/infinite-space/#1122820"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/10/image0045_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/infinite-space/#1122819"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/10/infinite_shipdesign_0911_005_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/infinite-space/#1122818"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/10/infinite_shipdesign_0911_002_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/02/infinite-space-launching-spring-2010-animated-trailer-launching/">Infinite Space launching Spring 2010, animated trailer launching right now</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 02 Jul 2009 15:15:00 EST. The <em>Star Trek</em> reboot movie comes out this week, and this game might as well be the JRPG take on <em>Trek.</em> The bottom screen shows the view from the captain's chair, and the top screen is basically a feed of your ship's viewscreen, providing a look at the enemy ship facing you down. <br /><br />A few other quick battle clips are available in the "Star Ship" section of the official <a href="http://mugen.sega.jp/">site</a>. The game comes out <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/30/infinite-space-hits-japanese-shelf-space-in-june/">next month</a> in Japan, so we expect to start having more footage show up on screen soon!<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/infinite-space/">Infinite Space</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/infinite-space/#1122822"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/10/infinite_log_0911_009_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/infinite-space/#1122821"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/10/infinite_module_0911_004_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/infinite-space/#1122820"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/10/image0045_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/infinite-space/#1122819"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/10/infinite_shipdesign_0911_005_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/infinite-space/#1122818"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/10/infinite_shipdesign_0911_002_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Via <a href="http://mugen.sega.jp/">Siliconera</a>]<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/06/infinite-spaces-star-trek-inspired-battles/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Infinite Space's Star Trek-inspired battles</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/06/infinite-spaces-star-trek-inspired-battles/">Infinite Space's Star Trek-inspired battles</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 06 May 2009 16:00:00 EST. Sega just announced that it'll be released in Japan on June 11. No international release dates have been announced yet, though GameStop suggests <a href="http://www.gamestop.com/Catalog/ProductDetails.aspx?product_id=71455">July 7</a>. <em>Infinite Space</em> casts the player as a spaceship crew member who works his way up to captain, and features giant, customizable spaceships and wireless ship-to-ship battles.<br /><br />Along with the announcement, Sega refreshed the Japanese <a href="http://mugen.sega.jp/">website</a> for the RPG with some animated story scenes, and released new <a href="http://www.inside-games.jp/news/344/34476.html">screenshots</a>. Hopefully as we approach release, we'll be able to see more gameplay stuff.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.siliconera.com/2009/03/30/infinite-space-blasts-off-in-june/">Siliconera</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/30/infinite-space-hits-japanese-shelf-space-in-june/">Infinite Space hits Japanese shelf space in June</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 30 Mar 2009 14:30:00 EST. Billed as a "grand experiment," Japanese developer Platinum Games just opened an English-language website for gamers outside of the land that birthed Chocobos. Rather than creating a corporate site <em>de rigeur</em>, Platinum's taking a more community-based approach, including forums (<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/madworld/">MadWorld</a> will be teh awesome everyone!), social media interaction (<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/09/see-the-first-gameplay-trailer-for-segas-bayonetta/">Hideki Kamiya</a> just ate a sandwich!) and even a video podcast. <br /><br />"It is part corporate homepage, part purpose built community portal," reads the site's front page. And between that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/02/platinum-games-spruces-up-logo-for-the-new-year/">fancy new logo</a> and this community-based initiative, we'll remain hopeful going forward. After all, this isn't <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/02/05/capcom-opens-community-portal/">the first time a Japanese developer</a> has tried to do this, right? What's <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Altamont_Free_Concert">the worst that could happen</a>?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/30/platinum-games-launches-community-site/">Platinum Games launches community site</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 30 Jan 2009 14:56:00 EST. <div style="text-align: left;">Ever wanted to create your own spacecraft and sail the ocean of stars? Well, you can do that with Nude Maker and Platinum Games' <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/infinite-line"><span style="font-style: italic;">Infinite Space</span></a> for DS -- sorta. We caught up with Hifumi Kouno, both president of Nude Maker and director of<em> Infinite Space</em>, to find out more about the spaceship-building title that's due out next year.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/infinite-space/">Infinite Space</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/infinite-space/#1122822"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/10/infinite_log_0911_009_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/infinite-space/#1122821"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/10/infinite_module_0911_004_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/infinite-space/#1122820"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/10/image0045_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/infinite-space/#1122819"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/10/infinite_shipdesign_0911_005_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/infinite-space/#1122818"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/10/infinite_shipdesign_0911_002_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><br /></div>

The above video is the best animated short made to advertise a video game you will see today (absolutely <em>definitely</em>), and maybe the best <em>ever</em>, even if this sort of marketing becomes commonplace. If it does? We all win, especially if the videos are half as good as this one, made by Production I.G. and Gonzo.<br /><br />Below? The best screenshots you'll see from a game advertised in this way. Basically, we're just offering you the best of the best here. That's easy when you're talking about<em> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/27/infinite-line-website-officially-translated/">Infinite Space</a></em>, and considering the pedigree, probably easy to say about anything <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/15/sega-officially-announces-platinum-games-deal-infinite-line-med/">Platinum Games</a> decides to do, ever.<br /><br /> <p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/20/infinite-space-and-a-finite-film/">Infinite Space and a finite film</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 20 Oct 2008 12:00:00 EST.
