With development of the latest Call of Duty falling to Treyarch, what's COD1/2/4 dev Infinity Ward up to? We'll give you one guess. If you said "Call of Duty 5," Activision would say "no comment." But you'd <strike>likely</strike> definitely be correct. But the company, who recently renewed its publishing contract with Activision, has its sights set on more than sequels.

In an update on his blog, IW's director of communications / community manager Robert "Fourzerotwo" Bowling reveals that the company is looking at "the possibility of a unique new IP" - one that it will "have complete control over." We're going out on a limb and betting that it won't have anything to do with military combat.

As for its next game? The one that's not an original IP and wow-that-sure-sounds-like-COD5? Bowling says that IW is "excited to be working on our next project, but it's going to be quite a while before I can share any details on exactly what that project is." "Quite a while" = [insert industry event here] '09.

[Via GameSpot]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Rumor: Infinity Ward giving Call of Duty 6 a sci-fi setting

Following the tremendous success of Infinity Ward's well-received Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, fans were generally disappointed to learn that the next installment in the wartime franchise would not only have a different developer, but would also be replacing their M4s with M1s, taking the series back to its World War II roots. If a recently uncovered rumor is credible, we're not entirely sure these same fans would approve of Infinity Ward's plans to throw the bullet-riddled franchise into the DeLorean, gun it to 88, and take it to where they don't need roads.

This rumor (and accompanying clumsy "Back to the Future" reference) finds its origins in a statement from an Infinity Ward insider, who mentioned the company is working on "a sci-fi title", and that further details concerning said title may or may not be made available during E3. It's extremely possible that Infinity Ward would get their hands back on the Call of Duty franchise once Treyarch has had its way with it, but would they really introduce elements of unrealism into such a history-steeped series, or could they be working on an entirely new, space marine-flavored franchise?

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Call of Duty 4 sells 10 million units

Filed under: PC, Sony PlayStation 3, Microsoft Xbox 360, First Person Shooters, Business

Infinity Ward's Call of Duty 4 has just reached that coveted eighth digit in unit sales. The developer told CNET yesterday that the shooter had sold over 10 million units across all platforms. While unable to provide a breakdown of the figures, Infinity Ward said it had sold the best on Xbox 360.

According to the studio, it is one of "less than 10" games to reach the 10 million mark since 2000. Although we don't know for sure what those games are, our best guesses are The Sims, The Sims 2, World of Warcraft, a half dozen Nintendo DS games and Wii Play. As of January 2008, Halo 3 was at 8.1 million units sold worldwide. (It should be noted that the Call of Duty 4 has an advantage here by merit of the PC and PS3 versions.)

As for Call of Duty 5, Activision has still not confirmed which franchise regular is developing the game, be it Treyarch or Infinity Ward. Rumors suggest the former, but given COD4's success, we really hope IW gets to latch onto the series and keep hold.

Update: We just got word from Activision that the 10 million figure does not take into account the Mac and DS versions of the game.

Gallery: Call of Duty 4: Modern Combat

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Rumor: Infinity Ward to be sole Call of Duty dev [update]

We know this runs the risk of sounding like a bad game of Telephone, but here it goes: We heard from Next Gen that they heard from an ex-Activision employee (who was formerly part of Underground) that they heard that Call of Duty 4 developers Infinity Ward recently renegotiated its contract with parent company Activision. Aside from finally getting casual Fridays and that margarita machine that Debbie in accounts receivable has been asking about, IW also reportedly got the right to be the exclusive developer of all things Call of Duty.

If true, that would edge out Treyarch (which made the 3rd numbered game in the series) after they complete work on the CoD game that they're unofficially working on. With as much love as IW put into the excellent CoD 4, we can totally understand why they don't want Uncle Treyarch to babysit the series every other weekend. But, as we've pointed out, this is just hearsay at the moment. We'll let you know if we hear something official.

Update: Activision has responded, describing the rumor as "erroneous information regarding the CoD franchise."

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Real-time Call of Duty card game coming in Fall '08

Filed under: Sony PlayStation 3, Nintendo Wii, Microsoft Xbox 360, First Person Shooters, Competitive Gaming
Here at Joystiq, we've always felt that the intense, highly realistic military action of the Call of Duty games would be better captured by a card game. Thankfully, someone at Upper Deck had the same idea, because the company announced the Call of Duty Real-time Card Game at this weekend's New York Comic Con.

MTV's Stephen Totilo got an early demo of the game, which comes off as a mix between the Pokémon TCG and the traditional card game Spit. Players lay down soldiers, protective cover and weapon cards as fast as possible, until someone plays a "freeze" card and all the damage and effects get tallied up. The game will be based on the non-modern Call of Duty games (sorry, COD4 fans) and could possibly include special cards that unlock in-game content for Call of Duty 5 (much like similar cards in the World of Warcraft card game) -- though this feature isn't yet confirmed. Oscar, Mike, Golf! Infinity Ward announced today that Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare has sold over 9 million copies worldwide since release. The company followed up that news by stating the new Variety Map Pack (costing $10) allegedly set a new Xbox marketplace record by having over 1 million downloads in its first 9 days of release. The map pack will be available on the US PSN next Thursday, Europe on May 4.

Infinity Ward also released some statistics (we lovez numbers) that over 30 million sessions and 30 million hours have been logged since the new maps released, which is about 1.9 billion minutes of nuggets noob tubing lost to the ether. COD4 has been in a battle for Xbox Live supremacy against Halo 3, with the two titles switching first and second place over the last couple months.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Call of Duty 4 Variety Map Pack hits PS3 April 24

Filed under: Sony PlayStation 3, First Person Shooters

Call of Duty 4's Variety Map Pack has emerged triumphantly from the PlayStation 3 certification process and will become available for download next week on the North American PlayStation Network. Infinity Ward's Community Manager, "Fourzerotwo," has updated his blog with the news, confirming the $10 DLC's arrival on April 24th. Unfortunately, European gamers will have to wait an extra week (until May 1st) before gaining access to the four new multiplayer maps.

We recommend you frolic through the maps on the Double XP weekend for North America, which will run from 12:01 AM PDT on Friday, April 25 to 11:59 PM PDT on Sunday, April 27. Infinity Ward developers will also hop in front of your crosshairs on Friday, April 25 from 5 PM to 8 PM PDT. Finally, Europe will receive a Double XP weekend, running from 12:01 AM GMT on Friday, May 2 to 11:59 PM GMT on Sunday, May 4, with developers joining on Friday, May 2 from 7 PM GMT to 10 PM GMT. Did you get all that?

[Thanks, Lucas]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Nintendo tops 2007's Develop 100 list

Filed under: Nintendo DS, Nintendo Wii, Business
And what such a prestigious achievement amounts to is, well, an awfully large amount of money. Well, someone in Sony's software certification lair is having a blast. Infinity Ward community manager "fourzerotwo" has noted on his blog that the $10 Variety Map Pack for Call of Duty 4, which hit Xbox 360 last week, has entered the certification process for PlayStation 3. Unless it's discovered that the downloadable content melts console innards, the "monstrously huge" number of PS3 players shouldn't have to wait much longer before getting shot at in the four new environments.

Though further details should become apparent later this week, expect the map pack to arrive alongside the PS3 version of Call of Duty 4: Game of the Year Edition.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Take a video tour of the Call of Duty 4 Variety Map Pack

Filed under: PC, Sony PlayStation 3, Microsoft Xbox 360, First Person Shooters, Online, Video

Looking for a good way to plan Call of Duty 4 strategies while you're away from your Xbox 360? Our sister site Xbox 360 Fanboy has put together a 5 1/2-minute walkthrough of the new Variety Map Pack, which includes Broadcast, Chinatown, Creek and Killhouse.

As for the future of the Variety Map Pack, Infinity Ward blogger extraordinaire Fourzerotwo has commented on his blog that the dev is now focusing on bringing the maps to the PlayStation 3 and PC. So it turns out the Call of Duty 4 Variety Map Pack is coming out this week, after all. Despite the official COD4 Game of the Year website decreeing an April 10 release date for the downloadable content, Infinity Ward's blogger extraordinaire fourzerotwo posted reassurances today that the map pack is "NOT delayed" (his emphasis) and that there's a good chance the maps will be available tomorrow night or early Friday.

"For those of you asking when you should take off work, I'd take off Friday," he said. It's a good thing we at Joystiq can work and play Call of Duty 4 (we're spoiled like that ... and ambidextrous). For those with the Game of the Year Edition, the provided tokens will work as soon as the maps become available.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Call of Duty 4 map pack delayed a week, now hitting XBL April 10

Filed under: Microsoft Xbox 360, First Person Shooters

The Call of Duty 4 Variety Map Pack will not hit this week like planned. Instead, that April 3 or 4 date has been pushed back to April 10, according to the official Game of the Year Edition website. We're betting this is the real deal, despite today's notoriety. If it's Activision's or Infinity Ward's idea of an April Fools' prank, then we're a bit disappointed by the lack of effort.

[Via X3F]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Call of Duty 4 multiplayer boasts 'monstrously huge' numbers

Filed under: PC, Sony PlayStation 3, Microsoft Xbox 360, First Person Shooters

When Infinity Ward producer, Mark Rubin, told Eurogamer that the number of online users for the PS3 version of Call of Duty 4 was "monstrously huge," we can only assume he was referring to a beast of significant size and infinite terror -- which pretty much rules out those Pokemon things. Indeed, the multiplayer monster appears to be of the house-trampling, child-eating variety, with Rubin having declared, "No other game has come close, either online current, or total unique users in a day."

The battle between Call of Duty 4 and Halo 3 for Xbox Live supremacy was also mentioned, with the former shooter's "between 1.2 and 1.3 million users every day" trumping Bungie's slightly more spartan servers. As for the percentage of total game owners (over seven million at last count) that have taken their tactics online, Rubin describes the number as "startling." Who knew statistics could be so scary?

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Call of Duty 4 GOTY edition, map pack DLC coming April 3

Filed under: Sony PlayStation 3, Microsoft Xbox 360, First Person Shooters

Infinity Ward spokesman Robert Bowling ("fourzerotwo" to the l33t kids) let fans of the game know that PS3 players should be receiving a new feature patch for Call of Duty 4: Modern Combat this week. But according to a few tipsters and commenters on his blog, it's now up and ready for your enjoyment.

In case you missed the post (or haven't talked to your 360-owning, Call of Duty 4-playing friends since last month) the patch includes better sniper rifle and ACOG accuracy, as well as host migration and playlist changes. You can find some more info right here. ... Or hey, why not just go play?

[Thanks, RileyFreeman]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Call of Duty 4 gets 'Game of the Year' edition next month

Filed under: Microsoft Xbox 360, First Person Shooters

It's a scientific fact that there's no reason you shouldn't have bought Call of Duty 4 yet. What, you don't like shooters? Too bad. Get motion sick while playing FPSs? Take a Dramamine. Don't have a next-gen console or PC? Get a second job. Not only do we think it's one of the year's best, you're possibly the only person who hasn't purchased a copy yet.

Keeping all that in mind, if you haven't bought the game, you may have good reason to hold off, if only for a bit longer. MCV brings word that Activision will release a Game of the Year edition of the game next month. Aside from new packaging, expect a token to allow you to download the forthcoming map pack for the game. Not exactly earth-shattering, but (depending on the price) this sounds like the only version of CoD 4 you latecomers should be looking for.

At the moment, MCV's only reporting on a 360 version of the GOTY edition. Activision tells us that more details should be coming this week, we'll let you know when we hear if PS3 owners will be getting some love.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
