Xbox Live Top 20: The power of a deal

Major Nelson has released the usual breakdown of Xbox Live activity for last week, February 8-15. On the retail side of things, Modern Warfare 2 still dominates with Halo 3 maintaining second. The Aliens vs Predator demo takes third place, knocking the Battlefield: Bad Company 2 to fifth while Call of Duty: World at War maintains its fourth place position. So, in other words, not very exciting.

The Xbox Live Arcade activity, however, is much more interesting. One look at the list and it's clear how much power the Deal of the Week can have on sales. In the next most recent activity listing (January 25 - February 1), Marvel vs Capcom rested in the number ten slot while TMNT: Turtles in Time Re-Shelled wasn't even in the top 20. Last week, thanks to both games being heavily discounted, Marvel vs Capcom jumped to number two while Turtles in Time Re-Shelled shot directly to number one. Invincible Tiger: The Legend of Han Tao, discounted as well, also broke back into the top twenty, landing in the thirteenth slot.

Whether the turtles will keep the top spot remains to be seen. With Battlefield 1943 knocked down to $10 this week, we're guessing they might be headed back into the sewer.

Xbox Live deals of the week: Turtles, Tiger and Marvel vs. Capcom

We're guessing that the person at Microsoft whose job it is to choose the discounted XBLA games of the week is a huge New Orleans Saints fan. Filled with the overwhelming spirit of victory from last night's engagement, this person couldn't stop him or herself from repeatedly hitting the price reduction button. We're afraid of what might have happened if they were a diehard Colts fan. Can XBLA prices be increased?

Fortunately, things panned out in our favor. During the discounting spree, three titles got their prices reduced: Marvel vs. Capcom 2 is now 800 ($10, down from 1200), TMNT: Turtles in Time Reshelled is 400 ($5, down from 800) and Invincible Tiger: The Legend of Han Tao is available for 800 ($10, down from 1200). Basically, if you've got an itch to watch ninjas or superheroes beat the snot out of things, Xbox Live has you covered for the next seven days.

Flower, Comet Crash & other PSN titles half-price this week

It seems the PlayStation Store got a little jealous of the brick-and-mortar retailers who were offering discounts during this week of ~~Black Friday~~ Thanksgiving. Beginning with today's specially-dated Tuesday PSN update, a handful of downloadable PS3 titles will be offered for half-price until December 2. Here's a list of the encheapened games, and their temporarily slimmed-down prices:

Comet Crash - $4.99
Flower - $4.99
Invincible Tiger: The Legend of Han Tao - $7.49

X3F TV -- XBLA in Brief: Watchmen 2, NBA 2K10 Draft Combine, Invincible Tiger

The Summer of Arcade is finally over and, in a seeming effort to console us all, Microsoft has released not one, but three new games onto XBLA. We've got two beat-em-ups and one basketball game this week, in the form of Watchmen: The End is Nigh Part 2, Invincible Tiger and NBA 2K10 Draft Combine (we'll let you guess which categories those each belong to).

NBA 2K10 Draft Combine (400 / $5) is probably the most interesting of the bunch, as it lets you create a player that you can later import into the retail version of NBA 2K10 when it releases later this year. Meanwhile, Invincible Tiger (1200 / $15) is a unique brawler inspired by old kung fu movies and Watchmen ... well, Watchmen 2 (1200 / $15) is exactly like the first one. Whether or not that's a good thing, we leave to you.

Wushu like a free download of Invincible Tiger's soundtrack?

Side-scrolling Fu-'em-up, Invincible Tiger: The Legend of Han Tao, is available on both PSN and XBLA today. To celebrate, developer Blitz Games is giving away the game's entire original soundtrack for free. The ten-track OST fuses the sounds of asian instruments with '70s orchestral funk and soul. It's the perfect thing to have on your iPod while you're going around town, beating up fools.

The kung fu action of Invincible Tiger: The Legend of Han Tao is crane-kicking the Xbox Live Marketplace and PlayStation Store sometime soon, and we've got a pair of gameplay videos to showoff the over-the-top action. Sweep in and take on wacky enemy forces in an arena style combat game. One-inch punch Evil Overlord's (yes, that's the bad guy's name) minions and reclaim the Star of Destiny. Invincible Tiger coming in August to XBLA, PSN

When we first discussed kung-fu action game Invincible Tiger: The Legend of Han Tao, we were so unnerved by the lack of any actual, on-screen tigers that we couldn't bring ourselves to report much actual info about it. Now, we've got some more details courtesy of Eurogamer, including a price (1200 MS points/$15) and a release window (sometime this August).

If you're having trouble placing Invincible Tiger, you might remember it's presented in stereoscopic 3D, if you've got a TV that works with that sort of thing ... which you probably don't. Trust us.

Invincible Tiger: The Legend of Han Tao -- in 3D!

Okay, okay ... you can take off the red & blue glasses. The above video (and the one to be found after the break) are not, we admit, in 3D. Invincible Tiger: The Legend of Han Tao is though. Not as in "polygonal," but honest-to-goodness 3D -- as long as you have the proper equipment.

Blitz Arcade was demoing the Namco Bandai published XBLA/PSN title yesterday on a Samsung DLP display capable of 3D output when used with special polarized glasses. While the game was more or less exactly what we played at New York Comic-Con, it was superficially deeper. The effect worked, even in conjunction with prescription glasses, lending the scenes impressive clarity while doing a great job of delineating the foreground / background planes gameplay traverses between.

Our major gripe -- apart from the fact the mode will only work on certain TVs -- is that it really seemed like nothing more than a novelty. While sharp, it robbed the game of color and detail, leaving behind what reminded us of Sega's old "holographic" arcade games. We applaud Blitz Arcade for trying something different, though; we're just glad it's not the only way to play this stylized beat-'em-up.

Say hai-ya to this Invincible Tiger trailer

It's kind of hard not to revel in all the chopsocky cheese present in the latest trailer for Invincible Tiger: The Legend of Han Tao. From the grandiose intro music to the over-the-top sound effects to the visible film grain, it just oozes the "so bad it's good" charm of old kung fu movies. Just throw an old drunken master and a Bruce Lee imitator in there and it would be complete. We should probably mention that it's actually fun to play, too.

Invincible Tiger hits XBLA and PSN this summer.

NYCC 09: Invincible Tiger hands-on (XBLA)

We learned a valuable lesson today: Don't judge a game by its ... name. First uncaged earlier this week, Invincible Tiger: The Legend of Han Tao is the sort of hackneyed game title that simply can't survive in the brutal wilds of Joystiq.com. So, already composing the first kill strikes in our minds, we picked up an Xbox 360 gamepad and entered the Tiger.

First thought: Wow, this is kinda like Kung-Fu Master -- the venerable father of beat-em-ups. Next thought: No, this isn't like Kung-Fu Master. The level is a movie set, not side-scrolling, but stage-like, with vertical sections, props, and stunt areas. You don't move as an 8-bit Master, but as a fast and fluid 3D model: leaping, rolling, diving, flipping, kicking and splitting wigs.

Namco Bandai unleashes Invincible Tiger on XBLA, PSN

When Namco Bandai announced a new downloadable game for Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network, we were incredibly excited. With a title like Invincible Tiger: The Legend of Han Tao, what could go wrong? We rushed to download screenshots for the game, and then disappointment hit.

WHERE ARE THE TIGERS?

So, apparently this downloadable game from Blitz Game Studios won't feature tigers. It will, instead, feature "over-the-top combat" for one or two players cooperatively in the fight against undead ninjas. That almost makes up for the lack of tigers. Almost.
