The founders of <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/hitman/">Hitman</a> </em>and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/kaneandlynch/"><em>Kane and Lynch</em></a> developer IO Interactive have left to form <a href="http://www.retomoto.com/">Reto-Moto</a>, a Copenhagen, Denmark-based studio "committed to redefining the online multi-player space." While the team isn't talking about its initial project, a press release announcing the company notes that Reto-Moto is in "active dialogue with strategic industry partners."<br /><br />In a rather incestuous twist, it turns out that Reto-Moto was actually established in 1997, and was the former parent of IO Interactive before it was handed off to Eidos in 2004 as part of a &pound;20 million acquisition. It looks like Thomas Wolfe <a href="http://www.amazon.com/You-Cant-Go-Home-Again/dp/0060930055">was wrong</a>; you can go home again.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/11/former-hitman-kane-and-lynch-creators-launch-reto-moto/">Former Hitman, Kane and Lynch creators launch Reto-Moto</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 11 Apr 2008 16:30:00 EST. <p>Casual games are not everyone's cup of tea, as evidenced by our <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/01/game-of-the-year-08-peggle/">controversial inclusion</a> of PopCap puzzler <em>Peggle</em> among <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/01/joystiqs-top-10-games-of-2007/">Joystiq's top ten titles of 2007</a>. There's no denying, however, that these often bite-sized diversions are as popular as they are addictive, reason enough why many startup studios -- such as newly formed <a href="http://www.thegameequation.com/">The Game Equation</a> -- <em>swing that way</em>. The Denmark-based studio, established by a pair of programmers who worked on the <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Hitman/">Hitman</a></em> franchise in a previous life, aims to develop for the "high end of the casual games industry" with titles that remind them of what it was like playing games when they were youngsters. That's sweet, but what <em>exactly</em> does that mean?<br /><br />The company has pair of puzzle games available already named <em>Deep Blue Sea</em> and <em>Constellations</em>, though at first glance there certainly doesn't appear to be anything particularly evolved about either of these efforts, entertaining as they may be. What <em>is</em> interesting is that in creating the match-3 puzzler <em>Deep Blue Sea</em>, the studio brought on an honest to goodness film and theatre composer, Rasmus Hartvig, to create the game's music, though given the dev's experience with <em>Hitman</em>, a series known for its dramatic scores, The Game Equation's aural emphasis is not wholly unexpected. That's all well and good, and we like good music as much as anyone, but the studio will need to pull out some considerably bigger tricks before we buy into its incongruous idea of high end casual games.<br /></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/02/former-hitman-devs-creating-high-end-casual-games/">Former Hitman devs creating 'high end' casual games</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 02 Jan 2008 08:51:00 EST. One thing that stands out to us as we watch the video is that the graphics aren't all that spectacular. A petty complaint perhaps, but early trailers had us impressed. Maybe it's the bland UI, but something seems off. But, gameplay is paramount, and the multiplayer mode (called Fragile Alliance) looks to change things up a bit. As we've <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/10/kane-and-lynch-has-bank-heist-multiplayer-offline-co-op/">discussed before</a>, players cooperate to pull off a bank heist, with victory being awarded to the criminal that gets out with the most money. To spice things up, players can betray their teammates to steal their cash, and those who are betrayed are resurrected as police officers.<br /><br />Honestly, it's a little hard to listen to the developers talk about how much co-op adds to the game. Call us jaded, but the fact that co-op is an offline only option is sorely disappointing, making the developers claims about how it changes the experience fall a little flat. Don't get us wrong, we love couch co-op as much as any gamer, but considering that nearly all major titles have online co-op now, it seems like a hefty oversight.<br /><br />Still, let's try not to dull our excitement for <em>Kane &amp; Lynch</em>, hmm? Watch the <a href="http://www.gametrailers.com/player/27551.html">video</a> and tell us what you think.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/07/video-kane-and-lynch-devs-on-multiplayer-co-op/">Video: Kane &amp; Lynch devs on multiplayer, co-op</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 07 Nov 2007 16:15:00 EST. Most of the video is simply listening to Lynch talk about how much he likes the <em>Grand Theft Auto </em>series, and how excited he is to play <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/gtaiv"><em>GTAIV</em></a>. Of course, we all know it's been <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/02/gtaiv-delayed-until-2008s-second-quarter/">delayed until next year</a>, so it looks like he'll have to wait. As we said, it's a cute video (it's also got some salty language, so watch at your own discretion). Give it a watch and give the folks at <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Eidos/">Eidos</a> some props for their cleverness.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/06/kane-and-lynch-cant-wait-for-grand-theft-auto-iv/">Joystiq</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/06/kane-and-lynch-excited-for-gtaiv/">Kane &amp; Lynch excited for GTAIV</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 06 Nov 2007 12:45:00 EST. The video focuses on the story development of the upcoming crime action game from IO Interactive. Jens Peter Kurup, the game's director, discusses how the story has developed over time. Interestingly, the game was originally based solely around Kane, with Lynch playing only a background role. As development progressed, Lynch became more central to the story, until the developers decided to essentially turn the game into "a buddy movie." Also, Kurup stresses that players may not necessarily <em>like</em> Kane and Lynch, but that players should still care about them at least a little bit. In this he compares Kane and Lynch to characters like Scarface. He's a horrible human being, but you still manage to care about him. Basically, that's the goal for <em>Kane &amp; Lynch</em>. Here's hoping IO Interactive manages to pull it off.<br /><br /><em>Warning: Video possibly NSFW thanks to violence and one instance of profanity.</em><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/15/kane-and-lynch-insider-vid-talks-story-development/">Kane &amp; Lynch insider vid talks story development</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 15 Oct 2007 09:35:00 EST. Pick a hand. You sure you want that one? Alright, bad news first then. The bad news is that the game will <em>not</em> feature online co-op. Yeah, a game that centers around two characters working together doesn't have online co-op. The news was confirmed by Eurogamer in an <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=84918">interview</a> with the game's director <span class="whoistalking">Jens Peter Kurup. From what we can gather of Kurup's circuitous answers, online co-op was scrapped in order to deliver the game on time.<br /><br />In happier news, the multiplayer mode for <em>Kane and Lynch</em> has been <a href="http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=173325%C2%A0">revealed</a> and it sounds like a lot of fun. Described by the developers at IO Interactive as such a good idea that they were surprised no one thought of it before, the multiplayer mode has players performing a bank heist. Titled <em>Fragile Alliance</em>, the mode has players attempt to rob a bank within a certain time limit while avoiding police fire. The twist is that players can turn on each other in order to get more loot. However, killing teammates immediately flags you as a traitor, so one has to pick the right moment to betray. Make it back to the getaway car with extra cash and you can purchase better weapons the following round. As a bonus, betrayed teammates are resurrected as police officers so they can exact their bittersweet revenge. In short, it sounds like a great idea. We liked our time <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/13/joystiq-impressions-kane-and-lynch-dead-men/">playing <em>Kane and Lynch</em></a> at E3; unfortunately, it appears the Gods That Be have given the title a rather arduous gauntlet. Eidos is bringing the title to PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on November 20.<br /><br />As if the holiday lineup wasn't crowded enough, this particular week will also see the deployment of BioWare's much-ballyhooed <em>Mass Effect</em> for Xbox 360 and Naughty Dog's <em>Uncharted: Drake's Fortune</em>. We're not saying <em>Kane and Lynch</em> has a death sentence; it's a fun game from the makers of <em>Hitman</em> that has garnered enough interest for a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/04/kane-and-lynch-movie-gets-fast-tracked/">movie deal</a>. But the competition will be fierce.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.xbox360fanboy.com/2007/09/26/kane-and-lynch-wreak-havoc-november-20th/">X3F</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/26/kane-and-lynch-dated-strikes-november-20/">Kane and Lynch dated, strikes November 20</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 26 Sep 2007 18:29:00 EST. The blackguards at Joystiq seemed to enjoy <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/13/joystiq-impressions-kane-and-lynch-dead-men/">their time with the game at E3</a> as well. Thus it's with both a little joy and trepidation that we report the game is <a href="http://www.gamespot.com/news/6179888.html?part=rss&amp;tag=gs_news&amp;subj=6179888">scheduled</a> to hit store shelves on November 20th. We are happy that we'll finally be able to give the game a proper once over, but also a little worried that November is fast becoming the most densely packed month we've seen all year. <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/masseffect">Mass Effect</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/rockband">Rock Band</a> </em>(presumably), <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/cod4"><em>Call of Duty 4</em></a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/blacksite"><em>Blacksite</em>,</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/armyoftwo"><em>Army of Two</em></a>, and now <em>Kane &amp; Lynch</em>. Of course, we're probably forgetting some, too.<br /><br />Sorry kids, looks like we're eating hot dogs this Thanksgiving. Turkey's expensive, and these games won't buy themselves.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.evilavatar.com/forums/showthread.php?t=36837">Evil Avatar</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/26/kane-and-lynch-wreak-havoc-november-20th/">Kane and Lynch wreak havoc November 20th</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 26 Sep 2007 16:45:00 EST. While we haven't seen much in the way of gameplay, the trailers so far have shown that <em>Kane &amp; Lynch</em> should offer a compelling story at the very least. There are emotional relationships, interesting characters, and, of course, plenty of action. The latest trailer is no different, giving us a glimpse at the life of Kane as he writes to his daughter prior to looks like an unexpected prison break. If the final game can live up to the cinematic caliber of the trailers (and judging from our <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/13/joystiq-impressions-kane-and-lynch-dead-men/">E3 impressions</a>, it might), <em>Kane &amp; Lynch</em> could be a real treat.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/30/new-kane-and-lynch-trailer-sets-the-bar-high/">New Kane &amp; Lynch trailer sets the bar high</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 30 Aug 2007 11:30:00 EST. If you're unsure about the nature of content in IO Interactive's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/kaneandlynch"><span style="font-style: italic;">Kane &amp; Lynch: Dead Men</span></a>, you need only a single glance at the bench you're sitting on in the Eidos E3 demonstration room. Packed beneath a layer of glass you can find either a cache of machine guns and bullets, packets of suspicious white powder (baking powder, perhaps?) or countless rows of hundred-dollar bills. Judging by the brief demonstration of the single-player component of the game, these are all items that have been thoroughly used, abused and stolen by Kane and Lynch at some point in their dubious careers.<br /><br />Despite sharing similar criminal and psychotic tendencies, the eponymous duo don't get along very well. Their brutish behavior and decidedly harsh vocabulary stems from the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Hitman/" style="font-style: italic;">Hitman</a> developer's desire to keep things "raw and realistic," says product manager Matt Knowles. He sums the game up as "an emotionally intense crime drama," pointing towards a bickering Kane and Lynch as they prepare to enter a vibrant upmarket nightclub. They're certainly dressed for the part, but it soon becomes clear that those snazzy suits conceal a sinister kidnapping plot.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/kane-and-lynch-e3/">Kane &amp; Lynch: Dead Men</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/kane-and-lynch-e3/#310516"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/07/kl_4_ps3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/kane-and-lynch-e3/#310517"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/07/kl_1_ps3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/kane-and-lynch-e3/#310518"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/07/kl_6_ps3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/kane-and-lynch-e3/#310519"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/07/kl_7_ps3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/kane-and-lynch-e3/#310520"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/07/kl_5_ps3-_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/13/joystiq-impressions-kane-and-lynch-dead-men/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Joystiq impressions: Kane &amp; Lynch: Dead Men</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/13/joystiq-impressions-kane-and-lynch-dead-men/">Joystiq impressions: Kane &amp; Lynch: Dead Men</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 13 Jul 2007 01:45:00 EST. <p>A new trailer for <a href="http://www.ioi.dk/">IO Interactive's</a> <em>Kane &amp; Lynch: Dead Men</em> has hit the internet, showing off the latest violent and visceral game play. For you PSP owners, take a crack at <a href="http://www.kaneandlynch.com/">the website</a> to download this trailer in delicious PSP widescreen format. The video is quite impressive, although we wish we stayed more awake during German language classes in college. The character models appear very well detailed and the animations ultra-smooth and realistic. Well, as <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/22/unlikely-kane-and-lynch-director-under-consideration/">realistic</a> as a bank heist shoot-up of this magnitude would be, supposedly. We imagine we'll be seeing a lot more from <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/25/rumor-kane-and-lynch-due-out-for-multiple-consoles-mostly-sonys/">this game</a> in the next few months as it gears up for its fall release. First <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/23/esrb-lists-eternal-sonata-on-xbox-360-and-playstation-3/"><em>Eternal Sonata</em> pops up</a> on the ESRB's site as a multiplatform Xbox 360 and PS3 title, now the previously Xbox 360 and PC title, <em>Kane &amp; Lynch: Dead Men</em> is going multiplatform as well. <a href="http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=24390">Gamesindustry.biz reports</a> that publisher SCi has decided to release <em>Kane &amp; Lynch</em>, along with <em>Crossfire</em>, simultaneously on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Of course, we first saw <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/24/kane-and-lynch-sighted-for-ps3-ps2-psp/">hints of a PS3 release</a> when <em>K&amp;L</em> was listed on an Atari Australia release schedule -- no word yet on those PS2 and PSP versions. But with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/02/13/lionsgate-takes-kane-and-lynch-to-the-movies/">a movie in the works</a>, and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/03/30/eidos-holding-out-for-better-ps3-install-base/">Eidos' fears</a> of a low PS3 penetration rate, they may still be a possibility. Kane &amp; Lynch is scheduled to be released simultaneously on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC "in time for Christmas" 2007.<br /><br />[Thanks, v1cious]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/24/kane-and-lynch-dead-men-gets-multiplatform-launch-on-ps3-360-an/">Kane &amp; Lynch: Dead Men gets multiplatform launch on PS3, 360, and PC</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 24 Apr 2007 12:09:00 EST. The Michael Mann inspired buddy-shooter should be making its way to the Xbox 360 and PC platforms by the end of the year; however, the film is quite a ways off. <br /><br /><a href="http://imdb.com/name/nm1457858/">Adrian Askarieh</a> and <a href="http://imdb.com/name/nm1952606/">Daniel Alter</a> will be producing <span style="font-style: italic;">Kane &amp; Lynch</span>, though they are currently involved with two other game-based productions. The duo was already working on another Eidos property (and probable spin-off to <span style="font-style: italic;">Kane &amp; Lynch</span>), <span style="font-style: italic;">Hitman</span>, while their other project, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Rock_%28entertainer%29">The Rock's</a> <span style="font-style: italic;">Spy Hunter: Nowhere to Run</span>, has languished in pre-production hell since before the <a href="http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/ps2/spyhunternowheretorun?q=spy%20hunter">ill-fated game</a> ever came out.<br /><br />So while we've been spared from the clutches of Dr. Uwe Boll this time, the chances of seeing <span style="font-style: italic;">Kane &amp; Lynch</span> on the big screen anytime soon are looking fairly slim.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/02/13/lionsgate-takes-kane-and-lynch-to-the-movies/">Lionsgate takes Kane &amp; Lynch to the movies</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 13 Feb 2007 16:30:00 EST. Officially, IO Interactive's tactical shooter has only been confirmed for Xbox 360 and PC. Eidos, which owns IO Interactive, is the game's primary publisher (not Atari). What <em>Kane &amp; Lynch</em> is doing on an Atari release list is unclear, but it's possible Atari will publish the title in Australia.<br /><br />Atari <a href="http://www.mygen.com.au/article.php?page_id=31595257110181074&amp;se_id=29&amp;format=2" target="_blank">recently announced</a> it would be publishing Eidos' <em>Battlestations: Midway</em> in Australia; perhaps another collaboration is in the works for <em>Kane &amp; Lynch</em>. If so, Atari might have let slip the existence of various PlayStation versions of the game. Or, it could just be a typo.<br /><br />[Thanks, Bruce; via <a target="_blank" href="http://www.futuregamez.net/news/news.html">Future Gamez</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/24/kane-and-lynch-sighted-for-ps3-ps2-psp/">Kane &amp; Lynch sighted for PS3, PS2, PSP (down under)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 24 Jan 2007 13:55:00 EST. The game is due out June 2007 and features (at least on home consoles) co-op play with two characters. One is a morally challenged mercenary and the other is a pill popping psychopath. If this listing is more than just a mistake, it could mean great things for PSP fans. The game is developed by Io Interactive, creators of <em>Freedom Fighters</em> and the <em>Hitman</em> franchise. </p>
<p>This game was a must buy for me on the Xbox 360 and if it comes out for the PSP as well, I'm such an Io Interactive fan that I'll likely buy both.</p>

The game -- developed for 360 and PC -- is from IO Interactive, the blokes behind the <em>Hitman</em> series. As you can see, it looks to be a little on the violent side, and is set to feature co-op and online play.
