Irem's PS3 survival adventure sequel, Disaster Report 4, was promptly canceled after Japan's March 11 earthquake. Kazuma Kujo, who created the series during his tenure at Irem, has been tweeting about the lost game, with his comments summarized and translated by Andriasang.

While the previous Disaster Reports took place during or immediately after a disaster, Kujo said, Disaster Report 4 begins about a week after the event that wrecked the city, allowing players to see the social effects (like discrimination causing strife in shelters) and even recovery efforts following a catastrophe.

Toward this theme, you would also have been able to travel with a variety of different characters you meet in the city, as opposed to the single partner of previous games. Since the emphasis was no longer on fleeing the city, you could even visit the same location later and see it partially rebuilt.

All of this sounds really interesting, until we remember that it was canned. Kujo said that it wasn't the earthquake that ended this game, but Irem's slow progress in completing it. Kujo has since left the company for a new developer, Granzella.
Disaster Report creator reports on the disaster of Disaster Report 4 originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 28 Sep 2011 22:03:00 EST. Sega recently announced that the Sega Master System versions of R-Type will be removed from the Wii's Virtual Console on September 30. No reason was given for the game's removal, but these things usually involve business mumbo-jumbo surrounding licensing issues. If you have any interest in this milestone of the shmup genre, grab it while you can.

Coincidentally, Irem, which developed R-Type, removed several titles from the Japanese PSN back in August, including several R-Type games. No reason was given for those edits either.
R-Type being removed from Virtual Console on Sept. 30 originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 28 Sep 2011 16:58:00 EST. You can buy Ninja Spirit from the Mac App Store right now for $10. Well, OK, it's part of the Irem Arcade Hits collection by DotEmu, which also throws in games like Kung Fu Master, Vigilante, and Hammerin' Harry -- 18 in all -- but all you really need to know is that this is a convenient delivery system for Ninja Spirit, a truly excellent side-scrolling ninja game.

The Mac version is a new release, but there's been a PC version available for some time now -- if that's your platform of choice for arcade collections, you can buy that direct from DotEmu, DRM-free.

Gallery: Irem Arcade Hits (PC/Mac)

Irem Arcade Hits brings Ninja Spirit to Mac app store originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 31 Aug 2011 03:00:00 EST. Irem's Bumpy Trot, an action game about steam-powered walking mechs, was released here on PS2 as Steambot Chronicles. A PS3 sequel was announced at TGS 2006, with few announcements since then, until today's really unfortunate one: It's been canceled.

In a brief letter on the Bumpy Trot site, Irem apologized to fans and plead with them to support Irem's future titles. That lineup, after the cancellation of Disaster Report 4, currently includes Doki Doki Suikoden and Pachipara Slot, both for PSP and neither likely to leave Japan.
Irem's Bumpy Trot 2 (Steambot Chronicles 2) also canceled originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 01 Apr 2011 01:00:00 EST. Japanese retailer Famicom Plaza reports that Irem has halted future production of all Disaster Report games in the wake of Japan's March 11 earthquake and tsunami, according to Andriasang. The apparent stoppage follows the publisher's cancellation of the fourth installment in the series, which had been scheduled for release next month in Japan.

The report of the production halt has apparently caused the previous Disaster Report installments to increase in value (as seen in Amazon Marketplace listings); though it's unclear if copies of the 2002 and 2006 PS2 games have still been in print recently. A third Disaster Report game was released for PSP two years ago.
Rumor: Irem stops production of old Disaster Report games originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 28 Mar 2011 21:30:00 EST. Citing "various circumstances," both Sega and Sony have announced delays of major game releases, reports Andriasang, while Irem has outright canceled Disaster Report 4. Sega announced that Yakuza: Of the End has been pushed back to a "TBA" release date in Japan, while Sony has altered the MotorStorm: Apocalypse launch to "TBA," as well. both titles were scheduled to be released in Japan this Thursday, March 17.

While neither company directly cited the massive earthquake and devastating tsunami that struck Japan on March 11 as the cause of the delays, it's evident that the disaster prompted the moves; though it's unknown if the reasons extend beyond the two games' disaster-themed premises. Andriasang also reports that Sony has temporarily closed its PlayStation repair and information center, located in one of the worst hit areas of Japan, the Miyagi Prefecture. Just yesterday, Square Enix temporarily shut down the Final Fantasy XI and XIV servers to conserve power in the country.

Meanwhile, Irem has canceled Disaster Report 4 without citing a specific reason, according to Andriasang. As the title suggests, DR4 centers around players escaping a city that has just suffered a devastating earthquake. Both DR4 and Yakuza: Of the End were only announced for release in Japan.

It's unclear at this point whether MotorStorm: Apocalypse is still on track to launch across Europe this week, as SCEE told GameSpot UK, "[The game's release is] under discussion at the moment. We'll get back to you when we know more." (The game's release in New Zealand was previously delayed following the severe earthquake that struck Christchurch last month.) The North American launch was set for April 12 two months ago.
Those of you who, like me, are looking forward to joining up with five friends and exploring ghost-filled caves as an adventurer who can't fall more than about five feet without dying, will be able to do so on November 23.

That's when the long-awaited (again, by me) Spelunker HD arrives on PSN for $9.99. It features both new, updated HD graphics and a "retro mode" which displays the new game in authentic 8-bit style. Check out a trailer after the break -- a trailer that features surprisingly long stretches of death-free gameplay.
Continue reading Spelunker HD brings the fragile explorer to PSN November 23

Spelunker HD brings the fragile explorer to PSN November 23 originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 17 Nov 2010 17:20:00 EST. Irem is working on a new Disaster Report game, this time for the PS3. Titled Zettai Zetsumei Toshi 4: Summer Memories, the first HD entry of the franchise has you escaping an earthquake-stricken city in the year 201X. (And no, Mega Man won't be making a cameo ... we think!) In addition to supporting 3D and PlayStation Move, this will be the first title in the series to add a "cleanliness" parameter. According to Andriasang, "if your character gets too dirty, your stress will rise." Thankfully, you'll be able to take care of this with the all-new "use the toilet" feature!

It's unclear if Disaster Report 4 will make it stateside. The last entry in the series, a PSP game, never found a publisher. The first two games for PS2 were released as Disaster Report and the pornographic-sounding Raw Danger (pictured above).
Disaster Report 4 to shake up PS3 with Move and 3D support originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 03 Sep 2010 16:45:00 EST. It was last November when we first heard that DotEmu was at work porting Irem's classic 1987 arcade shmup R-Type to iPhone. Yesterday, EA Mobile made it official: it'll be publishing the game on the App Store "this summer," but couldn't get more specific due to the unpredictable nature of Apple's app approval process.

We had a chance to get our hands on the game at EA yesterday and we've got to say, the port has turned out great, with three control schemes (touch to move and shoot, tilt to move / touch to shoot or an overlaid d-pad and buttons) plus options such as autofire and the ability to switch between full-screen and the original coin-op aspect ratio. Cleverly, DotEmu has created separate on-screen buttons for charged shots and launching the "Force" pod away from the player's R9 fighter.

Check out the screens below and we'll let you know when the game hits Apple's virtual store shelves.
However, that taste should be replaced by the much more pleasant (but still bitter) flavor they desire on December 10, when the game launches for real. Okay, we'll stop making jokes about the title from now until the end of the post.

The UMD release will sell for ¥5,040 ($50.60) and will be accompanied by a soundtrack disc as a pre-order bonus, while the digital release will cost ¥3,800 ($42). You can hear samples of the soundtrack, which features selections from various R-Type games and Image Fight, on the official site. No announcements have been made for a release outside of Japan, but the nice thing about digital releases is that you can always just sign into a Japanese PSN account and download the thing!
CEO Xavier Liard told Touch Arcade, "We are very pleased to work on R-Type and to start our collaboration with Irem Software Engineering Inc." DotEmu didn't announce which of the many versions of R-Type will be the basis of the port.

Having IREM involved seems like a good sign and, while the touch interface is not ideal for shooting games, Space Invaders Infinity Gene proved that it can work, at least better than it does for platforming or run & gun games. The team is working on a sequel to its first PSP game, R-Type Tactics, awkwardly titled Operation Bitter Chocolate. Unlike previous R-Type games, the Tactics series strays far from its shmup origins, offering Advance Wars-esque turn-based strategy in its stead.

The debut trailer for Operation Bitter Chocolate is stylish, but we're still not entirely sure what inspired its candied name. Perhaps it's solely to bundle chocolate replicas of the franchise's iconic Arrowhead with each copy of the game. The sequel, which has the bizarrely great title R-Type Tactics II: Operation Bitter Chocolate, will include twice as many units as the original shmup spinoff, along with new commands and a branching storyline. Bitter Chocolate will also offer downloadable missions.

When the sequel launches on October 29, it will be released both on UMD (with a bonus soundtrack disc) and as a cheaper download, which is kind of a good idea, considering that the PSP Go will be out in Japan on November 1.

Famitsu: IREM offering R-Type Command fans some Bitter Chocolate originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 29 Jul 2009 18:00:00 EST. Irem has been busy making games for PSP lately. The developer will release its disaster sim, Zettai Zetsumei Toshi 3, in Japan next week and already there are plans to release an RPG in June. This new RPG, which features 11 playable characters, is called Narisokonai. Oh, and there's a social sim aspect to the game as well.

Narisokonai is only scheduled for Japan right now, but Irem could bring it over like some of its other titles (Hammerin' Hero). Check out the trailer above and pics in the gallery below for more.

[via PSP Hyper]
Video: Irem's latest PSP J-RPG, Narisokonai originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 13 Apr 2009 22:00:00 EST. We don't expect this new PlayStation Home space to leave Japan any time soon. Irem, most famous for their R-Type games, has unveiled "Irem Plaza," a branded space that's meant to look like a traditional Japanese festival. The various stalls in this virtual world will feature items for sale, mini games, and a place to perform a bonodori.

This is just the beginning of Irem's plans for PlayStation Home. Their upcoming Spelunker HD will also receive its own Home space in March.
Irem creates Japanese festival-themed Home Space originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 27 Feb 2009 15:05:00 EST. Like most upcoming games in Japan, Zettai Zetsumei Toshi 3 (Disaster Report PSP) is coming equipped with an ad hoc multiplayer mode. The latest trailer for the survival game (found after the break) reveals that a maximum of four players can band together to brave a host of natural calamities.

The video also shows a good chunk of the single-player gameplay, which involves a lot of crawling, busting down doors and pulling people out of wreckage. You can try it out for yourself in the demo that's currently available on the Japanese PlayStation Store.

[Thanks David B!]
Continue reading New vid reveals 4-player ad hoc for Disaster Report PSP

New vid reveals 4-player ad hoc for Disaster Report PSP originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 09 Feb 2009 19:15:00 EST. Zettai Zetsumei Toshi 3 (Disaster Report PSP) is a PSP exclusive for Japan that was shown off at TGS this past week. Despite it being only shown in video format, Irem booth goers who wanted to check it out did end up with quite a treat and a smile on their faces. Irem's booth featured an earthquake simulator (pictured) which shook gamers as a video demonstration showed them how the game works. It looked like a rather interesting experience, though we didn't get time to sit down and ride the monster.

While you can't experience the thrill of that machine to help get you better acquainted with Disaster Report PSP, you can do the alternative. You can check out our gallery for 16 all-new pics from the game and perhaps, if you want to, just shake in your seat.

TGS 08: Have a look at Irem's Disaster Report PSP originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 14 Oct 2008 17:30:00 EST.
Spelunker is a remake of the NES classic from Irem. Does it look familiar to you? Do you remember the game from way back in the day, 20 years ago? If you do, it's probably because the aesthetics haven't changed much. Though boasting updated, modern graphics, the game's visuals retain a retro-stylized feel. The 2D characters are still there. The lifts and ladders are still in the places they would've been. Overall, it looks like an interesting title for those old-school gamers looking for a blast from the past.

Of course, the question is: How does it play? First off, the controls are simple enough. It's a 2D game with a focus on platform jumping, with other actions including: riding down elevators; leaping over pits; climbing ladders; and dodging fire, steam, and toxic liquids. You can collect items such as bombs to demolish obstacles in your way, or keys in order to progress through locked sections of a stage. It all sounds very simple, familiar and arcadey -- in other words, a perfect fit for a PSN game. Right?

It all sounds very simple, familiar and arcadey -- in other words, a perfect fit for a PSN game. Right?

Gallery: Spelunker

Continue reading TGS 08 hands-on: Spelunker (PSN)

TGS 08 hands-on: Spelunker (PSN) originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 12 Oct 2008 15:30:00 EST. Here's another three new titles set to be shown at this year's Tokyo Game Show. Let's start first with two out of the three unannounced SCEI games, shall we? Both games are adventure, investigation-type games according to PSPHyper. They're called Enkaku Sousa and Diamond and the Sound of a Gun Shot. The third mystery Sony title is apparently Resistance: Retribution, which is something we've known about since E3. Not really much mystery there.

The last title we'll mention in this article is Irem's Disaster Report game for PSP. The company is bringing the series of survival adventure games over to the PSP with Zettai Zetsumei Toshi 3. The series has come over Stateside before, so this one might turn out to be a title that could make its way over here.

Source 1 - PSP Hyper
Source 2 - PSP Hyper
Two out of three SCEI TGS games revealed, Irem brings Disaster Report to PSP originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 02 Oct 2008 14:30:00 EST.
Irem's upcoming Bumpy Trot game on PSP looks rather ... bumpy. And we don't mean that in a good way. This robot battling arcade game looks a lot like the DS Custom Robo, even graphically. We know visuals don't make or break a game, but we just wish this looked a bit better.

The game is a spiritual successor, of sorts, to the PS2 game Steambot Chronicles. It hit shores outside of Japan, so this one might, too. Well, if you're an import-friendly type of person and want to jump on this with a pre-order, you'll get this really nifty PSP pouch as a bonus. If you're looking forward to the upcoming May 6 release of R-Type Command for the PSP, but are wondering where to pick it up, Atlus USA might have just made the decision a tad easier. The company has announced that for a "very limited" time those who buy the game from GameStop, Amazon.com, GameCrazy, EB Games Canada, and other select retailers will be able to take home a free plastic miniature replica of the game's R-9 spacecraft, which we imagine to be perfect for keeping your desktop safe from the Bydo Empire.
R-Type Command to include R-9 collectible originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 01 May 2008 09:15:00 EST. Call it a retro-speculative.

Once again, we're turning to a crappy game for our weekly recommendation, due to its historical (or hysterical, amirite) notability. We've proven that we kind of enjoy bad Street Fighter II-era fighting games; now that time has passed and the awful clones didn't lead us into another crash, we can enjoy them as bizarre and hilarious curiosities. Well, "enjoy" is a strong word.

Street Combat on the SNES is one of those curiosities, mostly because of its origins. Don't be fooled by the "IREM" on the label -- this game dates back from when good old IREM had enough money to publish other people's games. Don't take it as the mark of quality it usually is.
Continue reading Virtually Overlooked: Street Combat

Virtually Overlooked: Street Combat originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 28 Feb 2008 20:00:00 EST. RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

As you can see, we follow Atlus USA's requests to the letter. The quirky company has asked us to tell you lot about R-Type Command, "a bold new turn-based strategy entry in the long-celebrated series of side-scrolling shooters." Hitting the PlayStation Portable on May 6th, the game has players going up against the evil "Bydo Empire" in "exciting tactical gameplay!" The exclamation mark is theirs.

You'll have close to a hundred different upgradeable units at your command, including those hailing from the aforementioned Bydo Empire. Oh, and a little protip for those eager to engage in the wireless Ad-Hoc multiplayer: Make sure your underwater module with powerful anti-air missiles and torpedoes doesn't lose its resupply function! Developer Irem, notable for their R-Type franchise, is working on yet another PSP game. <strike>Carpenter Story</strike> Ikuze Gensan looks like a 2D/3D platformer, where you carry a big hammer and cause lots of explosions. We like.

Supposedly, you play a boy who's on a mission to stop an irresponsible construction company. In your quest, you will savagely destroy tons of private property and cause general chaos on the streets of virtual Japan. With Irem's penchant for mayhem, we're pretty psyched for this -- even if it means we'll have to import it.

Check out Famitsu for more screens.

[Via PSPHyper]
Grab a hammer, Ikuze Gensan is coming (to Japan) originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 28 Jan 2008 10:30:00 EST. If you disagree, go play them. Seriously. Anyway, we were alerted via e-mail today that Play-Asia is selling R-Type Tactics today, as it was released overseas. Normally, importing games requires some kind of knowledge of another language, unless you don't mind having no idea what's being said, but this is R-Type at its core. The story won't revolve around much more than "kick ass, don't take names, but do it tactically this time." So go ahead, if you really want, snag this game and take advantage of the region free PSP! In fact, it was relatively far from perfect, but it delivered some fun sandbox-y robot RPG fun. The sequel to the game, aptly titled Bumpy Trot 2, was first announced at last year's Tokyo Game Show. This year, it's resurfacing after an entire year of zero information to show off what it has become. From the official website, it looks like it's adopting a similar style to Sega's Valkyrie of the Battlefield. Sega has a more stylish approach, but Bumpy Trot 2 looks like it's a hybrid of anime-style graphics and cel shading. Of course, our eyes could just be crazy groggy.

Since we can't read Japanese very well, we can't tell you if the game is going to show up in video or playable form, but we can tell you Irem is still in the driver's seat and if the title makes its way to America, it'll probably be thanks to everybody's favorite "let's make a game rare by releasing four copies, total" company, Atlus. One thing that's clear, though, is the platform for the game: PlayStation 3. It seems Japanese developers are finally coming out of their shells and cracking away at the PS3. It's about time! We'll tell you more after we see the game at TGS.
Steambot Chronicles sequel to resurface at TGS originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 13 Sep 2007 22:00:00 EST. It may be the most frustrating game of all time, although we're sure that there's some Koei number-crunching Chinese war game out there or realistic PC submarine simulator that's much, much harder. You go into those things expecting a convoluted mess; you go into an NES action-RPG expecting at least to understand where you are or what you're supposed to be doing before you die. Deadly Towers doesn't afford you the luxury. Okay, so we admit we're a little biased. Any time we see Irem do anything, we want to report it. They've released ten new screenshots of their upcoming strategy game, R-Type Tactics. While they look good to us, we'd love it if Irem released a demo, so that we can fully understand how to play the game. We're sure R-Type will be fine as a strategy game, but a nagging voice in the back of our head remains a little unsure ...

Check out our updated gallery for all the pictures.

Ten new R-Type Tactics screenshots originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 29 Jun 2007 16:00:00 EST.
Welcome to our weekly feature, Virtually Overlooked, wherein we talk about games that aren't on the Virtual Console yet, but should be.
Last week, I asked for reader suggestions for this week's Virtually Overlooked. One reader suggested The Guardian Legend, and I thought that was a perfectly reasonable suggestion. The Guardian Legend was one of the biggest sleeper hits of the NES era, and something that is definitely worth checking out, especially for fans of Ys and Faxanadu.

It was only later that I realized that I was thinking of Legacy of the Wizard. I get those two mixed up a lot. They both fall into that "sleeper" category, they were both published by Brøderbund, and they both have "Leg" in the title. They're practically the same game, except that one's a hybrid vertical shooter/Zelda-style adventure developed by Compile, and the other is a side-scrolling action RPG from Nihon Falcom. But other than that, the same game.

Inspired by my inability to keep two similar things separate, I thought this week we could look at some more NES games I get confused about, either because they're so similar or because I'm so dumb.

Continue reading Virtually Overlooked Special: A bunch of NES games I get mixed up with each other

Virtually Overlooked Special: A bunch of NES games I get mixed up with each other originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 31 May 2007 16:40:00 EST. If you haven't heard, Irem is working on a new R-Type game for PSP. R-Type Tactics looks to take the series in a bold new strategic direction. Tactics will feature all-new turn-based battles based on grids ... while retaining the series' trademark good looks and massive explosions.

Check out the first direct-feed screenshots of the game in our gallery below. Then, visit the official Japanese website to find out more about the game (provided you understand Japanese).

[Thanks, Thien!]
A first look at R-Type Tactics originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 25 May 2007 11:45:00 EST. Irem's Kazuma Kujou (the producer of Disaster Report and Steambot Chronicles), is reportedly working on a new PSP title. In an interview with Gpara, he mentions that he's working on a sci-fi strategy game for our beloved system. He unfortunately didn't reveal any other details about the game. Later in the interview, he did say that he'd like to explore player freedom in an upcoming game. Though it is unknown if that desire specifically applies to this upcoming PSP release. I quite enjoyed both Disaster Report and Steambot Chronicles. They still stand out as being unique, even in the crowded PS2 gaming space. Let's hope he can bring that same quirky and creative gameplay to the PSP.

[Via IGN]
Steambot Chronicles producer making a PSP game originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 15 May 2007 12:00:00 EST. Have we mentioned recently how much we love Hudson? Not only did they make tons and tons of incredible games for the Turbografx-16 (and lots of other systems!), but they're better than anyone else about actually releasing their games on the Virtual Console. And now we have news that some of the best Turbografx-16 games are coming to the US in May! Also some stuff for Nintendo consoles in Japan, but we'll get to that.

It finally happened. A game we profiled in Virtually Overlooked has been officially announced for the Virtual Console. Even though IREM's Ninja Spirit was one of the best and most popular TG16 games, we're going to go ahead and declare this as a victory.

As if that weren't exciting enough, Hudson announced plans to release a personal favorite, Blazing Lazers, as well as Ordyne (excellent, adorable shmup) and World Sports Competition (we haven't played it, but we'll assume it's great because we're in a good mood).

Nintendo of Japan also has some fantastic stuff planned, including Super Mario Bros. 2 and F-Zero X, either of which would no doubt be the headline if anyone else were writing this. That's Super Mario Bros. 2, the Japanese version, released here as Lost Levels. The really, really hard one, as opposed to the silly one about throwing vegetables.
Ninja Spirit headed to VC, we take full credit originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 27 Apr 2007 17:52:00 EST.

Welcome to our weekly feature, Virtually Overlooked, wherein we talk about games that aren't on the Virtual Console yet, but should be. Call it a retro-speculative.

This is the second time we've ended up following a theme from week to week in these features-- in this case, we wanted to talk about Ninja Spirit for the Turbografx-16, and didn't remember until we started researching that, like last week's Photograph Boy, Ninja Spirit was developed by IREM.

The best way to describe Ninja Spirit for people familiar with Virtual Console games is "The Legend of Kage, but good." They also mentioned the R-Type price specifically in a press release last week, but our eyes glazed over and we misreported it at 600 points. Silly us... we thought the price used in six other TurboGrafx-16 games so far would carry over to the seventh.

While R-Type is a bit more popular than a similar game like Super Star Soldier, we can't help but wonder why Nintendo chose this game to break out the first price hike. While a 200 point increase isn't too outrageous, we can only hope this does not represent the start of a trend in ever-increasing virtual console prices.
Christmas sees first VC price increase originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 25 Dec 2006 12:05:00 EST.
