We believe they deserve a wider audience with the Joystiq Indie Pitch: This week, Dreampainters talks ancient Italian legend, modern murder and the beauty of point-and-click adventure games with its new PC release, Anna.

What's your game called and what's it about?

The game is called Anna and is a point-and-click graphic adventure about a "sort of haunted" sawmill.

What inspired you to make Anna?

The main inspiration came from a real-life old sawmill in Valle D'Aosta, an all-mountain region in Italy (to be very precise, in Val D'Ayas). It is an ancient and beautiful place, with some legends about ghosts and hauting around it. We mixed all this with a set of local legends and personal stuff. This game is actually a true homage to Val D'Ayas and its heritage.

Gallery: Anna

Continue reading The Joystiq Indie Pitch: Anna

The Joystiq Indie Pitch: Anna originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 30 Sep 2012 21:00:00 EST. As one might imagine, the presentation will focus on the hurdles of employing a new studio to create a new entry in the popular Microsoft franchise.

Holmes will discuss the challenges of "creating a game with a storyline that encompasses over 100,000 years of fictional history and connects through and across multiple mediums including print, a live-action digital series, an ambitious story-driven campaign and innovative episodic content that will continue beyond the launch of the game." Holmes will also address how Microsoft went about creating its first internal studio from scratch, and the talent that helped make Halo 4 a reality. Finally, it's not listed in the presentation description, but we expect Holmes will talk about what Master Chief's been eating all this time that's made him put on all that weight.
It's-a me, Master Chief: Halo 4 lead talks shop at Italy's View conference this October originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 25 Jul 2012 15:30:00 EST. The closures follow a "strategic review" of THQ's operations in Italy and Spain, according to Annie Sullivan, THQ's managing director of European market development.

"We were looking for a distribution partner who has the most effective networks locally to market THQ's products," Sullivan said. "I'm excited for the opportunities that THQ's partnership with Koch Media represents and am looking forward to working together on successful launches of our forthcoming products."

We have contacted THQ for more information on the European closures.

Update: THQ has responded, noting that these are not "new" actions, but are new distributor agreements in Spain and Italy: "As part of the previously announced restructuring of its global publishing business, THQ made changes to its publishing operations in Europe. As a result of those changes, the company will now utilize Koch Media as its publishing distributor in Spain. In Italy, the company continues to utilize a distribution company, and a new agreement is in place with Koch Media for that region.

"These are not new actions, just updates on previous decisions and new agreements with specific territory distribution partners."
THQ shuts down publishing in Italy and Spain [Update] originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 19 Jun 2012 17:30:00 EST. The game is described as "a rich emotional experience packaged in a movie-length time frame" - but it's still in a "very early prototype stage."

The announcement derided "throw-away iPhone games and 40-hour long traditional productions," and noted that the studio is exploring "a reasonable price" for its first game. No platforms or launch windows or themes or ... well, much of anything else was revealed, but Ovosonico encouraged interested parties to keep an eye on its Twitter and Facebook pages for upcoming news.

Update: We spoke with Massimo Guarini via email this afternoon for more info on the mystery project. He told us, "The game will deal with unusual subjects, something definitely unexplored in a teenage-driven market," before he added, "I can guarantee that you'll find lots of crazy ideas, strong emotions, original settings, [and an] unconventional approach to gameplay and storytelling." Beyond that, he wouldn't budge on game details.

Guarini also hinted at digital distribution for the title, though he said, "We're not targeting iOS/mobile or freemium models right now. If we do it, we will focus on product quality, not on ensnaring people with addictive tricks." He said we'll likely see more from the still totally ambiguous project this August.
Continue reading Shadows of the Damned director teases 'movie-length' new game from new studio [update]

Shadows of the Damned director teases 'movie-length' new game from new studio [update] originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 22 May 2012 13:13:00 EST. Breaking! Sailor Moon has washed up in Italy, years after her abrupt disappearance from US syndication. Following a new initiative to globalize Ms. Moon's brand of magical girl ... sailing (is it?), Namco Bandai Europe has announced the world's first Sailor Moon DS game -- and, in fact, only the second Sailor game to be released outside of Japan, ever: La luna splende, which, as you may have gathered from the title, will be exclusive to Italy.

La luna splende, planned for release this spring, looks to cash in on the Sailor Moon revival in Italy, where Toei Animation has been broadcasting a remastered version of the anime series since last March, according to Wikipedia. "Adventure, fantasy, fun, action ...," teases the Google translation of Namco Bandai's Italian announcement, "these are the watchwords for next spring." Hmmm ... maybe it's more convincing in Italian: Avventura, fantasia, divertimento, azione ... ecco le parole d'ordine per la prossima primavera!
Sailor Moon returns in Italian-exclusive DS game originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 07 Jan 2011 07:00:00 EST. In fair Verona, where we lay our scene, Italy set a Guinness world record for "largest number of participants to play in a single Guitar Hero session over a 24-hour period." At the FNAC store, 594 people participated in a single, massive Guitar Hero 5 play session coordinated to celebrate the European release of Activision's latest music title.

The record was set using Guitar Hero 5's Party Play mode, which supports drop-in and drop-out gameplay. Capcom has been combing <strike>the desert</strike> Europe looking for the best Street Fighter IV players around, Eurogamer reports. Utilizing the new Championship mode to track your Grade Points (which determines your overall rank in the standings, naturally), the contest is open starting today and ends on May 17. Then, on the week of May 30, the best 30 fighters from each of the participating countries -- UK, France, Germany, Italy and Spain -- will be matched up to decide the champion of each nation. After that, the five winners will then be flown to a secret location (we're crossing our fingers for inside of a volcano) on the weekend of June 13 to compete for the grand prize: an Aerox R Yamaha scooter and matching SFIV jackets.

If you're a Joystiq reader, and you make it to the finals and win this scooter, we suggest you name it Sasha.
Capcom looking for a few good Street Fighter IV Xbox 360 players in Europe originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 24 Apr 2009 16:00:00 EST. Mind you, some of them sound pretty good (videos of all six follow the break), and we're certain our millions of Dutch readers are going wild over the inclusion of Di-Rect. 200 Wii points each, if you're interested.
Forget all about the brutality and violence of ancient Rome by playing a happy chappy puzzle game! It used to be a PC game (no surprise there), but Cradle of Rome now wants to invade the DS, build an empire and bask in the magnificence of togas and sandals. It's a standard "swap colored tiles around to match three colors" puzzle game, but the goal is to collect resources from each tile in order to build Rome itself.

A unique twist on a formula everyone is familiar with can't be all bad. You'll eventually be able to build, several historical monuments, including the Arch of Titus, the Temples of Venus and Saturn and everyone's favorite bloodbath, the Coliseum.

Cradle of Rome is set for an October 10th release in Europe, but on account of Rome being a Europe-exclusive city and all, there's no word of a release in other regions. Well, that's probably not the reason it isn't coming to America, but it should be import-friendly all the same. The first screenies are awaiting a thumbs-up or thumbs-down in the gallery. Nintendo also gave copies of Nintendogs, New Super Mario Bros., and Pokemon Diamond and Pearl for the kids to enjoy, as well as a few Wiis. Some cynics might cite ulterior motives for Nintendo's actions, but the fact is, you can't argue with a smile on a sick child's face.

Check out the video (with music that Super Mario Galaxy fans might recognize) of the event <strike>embedded above</strike> to get a nice feel-good start to the weekend.

[Update: The video is now after the break because of its autostarting tendencies. These Italian Wii ads are just awesome. Using the Post-it technique of creating pixel art, Nintendo pasted some giant sprites up on walls and signboards. Passersby who thought to pull down the Post-its (the jerks) found Wii ad copy on the back of each pixel, and, hopefully, more Post-its underneath.

Interactive advertising like this seems like a great idea. What's more Nintendo than encouraging potential customers to touch!! their advertising?

[Via Kotaku]
Don't you forget about Wii originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 26 Jul 2007 16:50:00 EST. Promotional Consideration is a new weekly feature about the Nintendo DS advertisements you usually flip past, change the channel on, or just tune out. Our christening post takes a look at an Italian ad for the handheld that won Epica's silver award for Press last year. According to the latest issue of Famitsu, the company is venturing away from its RPG franchises for a moment, focusing instead on leisure activities like yoga, classical music, and gardening. It might not sound as exciting as SRPG battles or Chocobo mini-games, but different strokes for different folks.

Square Enix will also be releasing DS travel guides based on the popular World Walking tour book series in Japan. These guides will provide maps and other useful information for sightseers visiting countries like France or Thailand. Check past the post break for the full list of destination guides and verbose titles from Square Enix's DS Style lineup.

[Via NeoGAF]
Continue reading Square Enix brings lifestyle titles to DS

Square Enix brings lifestyle titles to DS originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 04 Apr 2007 12:00:00 EST. Apparently not, though, as an Italian retailer has broken Sony's carefully planned street date, causing a domino effect in other other stores across the country.

GamesIndustry.biz reports that small specialist chain Darty took out ads for a 7 p.m. Wednesday PS3 sale in advance of the official Friday launch. Competitor Media World responded by canceling midnight sales plans and letting its stock loose at 9 a.m. Wednesday morning (or roughly seven and a half hours ago, Italy time, as of this posting). Italy's GameStop stores are currently planning to stick to the street date, but said they might be forced to break it to stay competitive.

Sony, for its part, is "deeply disappointed by the unilateral decision" to launch early and is "carefully consider[ing] all available options in relation to retailers who have commenced sale of PlayStation 3 prior to 23rd March 2007." Unilateral decisions? Retaliation? Is this the console war or the Iraq war?
Italy breaks Euro PS3 street date originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 21 Mar 2007 11:35:00 EST. Think it's the mustache? But wherever you're from, the Wii launch is big news, even in beautiful Milan. George Romero's films, excluding his latest, are some of myfavorite movies to this day and the Resident Evil titles have always held a warm place in my heart. RossMiller over at Joystiq posts about Capcom, in collaboration with Starcom, and their employment of undead appendages toadvertise the release of Resident Evil: Deadly Silence.

This campaign, which uses zombie handsbearing the phrase "questa mano é un biglietto da visita. Il resto del corpo ti sta cercando." Thattranslates into the English phrase, "This hand is a business card. The rest of the body is trying to findyou." The grave plots boldly display a sign, which reads "gli zombie sono in citta!" This translatesinto "the zombies are in the city!"

[Via Joystiq]
Capcom uses dead for Resident Evil DS Italy release originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 08 Apr 2006 19:26:00 EST.
