Nintendo reduced its annual sales forecast by 6.8 percent today, leading to a 50 percent drop in the projected operating profit for its core business. Nonetheless, the ever-weakening state of the yen is balancing that out by boosting the company's overseas earnings.

According to its revised forecast, Nintendo now expects to earn a net profit of ¥30 billion for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2015, which converts to around $255 million. That's up 50 percent from the company's previous projections, and a sharp contrast to the $229 million loss posted the previous fiscal year.
Continue reading Nintendo: Sales tracking below forecasts, weak yen drives profit

Nintendo: Sales tracking below forecasts, weak yen drives profit originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 28 Jan 2015 06:00:00 EST. Dragon's Dogma Online is official, after Famitsu announced it's featuring the game in the latest issue of its magazine. The entry in Capcom's action-RPG series was much speculated after trademarks showed up in Europe and Japan last month.

We're waiting on official details, but going by reports based on magazine scans, Dragon's Dogma Online is a free-to-play game for PS4, PS3, and PC. According to Siliconera, the game is due for release in Japan this year.

While the European trademark may raise hopes for an international release, a Capcom UK representative told Eurogamer this morning there are no plans to release Dragon's Dogma Online in the West.
Continue reading Dragon's Dogma Online announced

Dragon's Dogma Online announced originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 27 Jan 2015 09:30:00 EST. The first-off-the-line Anniversary Edition PlayStation 4 went for ¥15.135 million in an online charity auction last night, which converts to a stunning $128,000. Sony Japan's auction ended this weekend with the huge bid on the special grey console, which is unit "00001" of 12,300.

"We appreciate all who participated in the auction and are surprised at the highest bid price, which was higher than our expectations," a Sony representative told the Wall Street Journal, perhaps with an agape mouth and a lack of blinking.
'Club Nintendo is dead, long live the new loyalty program,' is the message from Nintendo this morning, after the company announced it's closing its current rewards service. Users in the US and Canada have until the end March to earn Club Nintendo Coins and until the close of June to redeem them, signalling when the service will finally hang up its brown boots.

"We thank all Club Nintendo members for their dedication to Nintendo games and their ongoing love for our systems and characters," said Nintendo of America executive VP Scott Moffit in the company's press release. "We want to make this time of transition as easy as possible for our loyal Club Nintendo members, so we are going to add dozens of new rewards and downloadable games to help members clear out their Coin balances."
Do not adjust your monitors, do not wipe your glasses clean. You're 100 percent looking at a Super Mario-glossed entry in GungHo's incredibly popular Puzzle & Dragons series, and it's coming to 3DS in Japan this April. GungHo America also notes an "overseas release" of the thus-titled Puzzle & Dragons Super Mario Bros. Edition through Nintendo.

[Update: A Nintendo spokesperson told Digital Spy that currently Puzzle & Dragons Super Mario Bros. Edition is a "Japanese-only announcement." So it's unclear what exactly GungHo America's referring to by "overseas release." We've reached out to GungHo for clarification.]

Details are limited at the moment - according to Gematsu the match-3 game features both local multiplayer and StreetPass functionality. From another angle, the most important details lie in the numbers. GungHo just revealed that the original mobile Puzzle & Dragons surpassed 6 million downloads in North America, taking the free-to-play game's worldwide tally to more than a staggering 41 million. To put that in perspective, in April 2013 Puzzle & Dragons raked in $3.76 million per day. Furthermore, it's well established that Mario likes gold coins.

If you still puzzled, check out GungHo's announcement trailer below the break.
Continue reading Puzzle & Dragons Super Mario Bros. In a recent tweet, Tekken director Katsuhiro Harada revealed a new feature being tested for Bandai Namco's upcoming 3D fighter Tekken 7. "BETA TESTING NOW> New Rendering Camera System "Both players can play on LEFT SIDE (or RIGHT SIDE) for TEKKEN7," Harada tweeted.

Initially this idea seems confusing, but the image Harada included - which can be seen, in part, above - makes the new feature clear. Harada's team has linked two Tekken 7 arcade cabinets and programmed the game to rendered mirrored images centering on the two fighters for each display. The effect is that both players are fighting from the same side in the same, real-time match with data being shared between the two cabinets, hopefully with very little lag.

However, the utility of this feature is questionable, especially for anyone outside of Japan. Players who prefer to fight from one side or the other may embrace the option (assuming it makes its way successfully through beta testing), but as the system requires an elaborate grafting of two undoubtedly pricey Tekken 7 arcade machines it will only appear in larger, well-funded arcades. Given the collapse of the arcade market in the West, this effectively renders the mirrored system exclusive to Japan and a few locations scattered throughout North America that might buy the system purely for its novelty.

The next game from the hedgehog hive mind of Sonic Team is Sonic Runners, and it's coming to smartphones next year. Sega producer Takashi Iizuka announced the game at a Sonic fan event in Tokyo, and Famitsu says more details will spill next month. For now we just have the name, dev, platform and 2015 window - and no word either way on a Western release.

Sonic Team's last hog roast was Sonic: Lost World back in 2013, and since then the venerable studio's pumped out Puyo Puyo Tetris in Japan. It did supervise work on 2014's Sonic Booms, but they were chiefly developed by American teams Big Red Button and Sanzaru Games.

We may yet see something more sizable starring Sonic next year. Earlier this year a German toy fair promo seemed to let the hedgehog out of the bag, noting a new Sonic game for PS4, Xbox One and Wii U in 2015. Sega quickly stepped in to denounce the info as "incorrect."
It's not exactly red-nosed, but we'd say Japan's new PS4 glows. The red-and-black system is coming to the country on March 19, 2015 alongside HD-ified action-RPG Final Fantasy Type 0.

Sony unveiled the new livery over the weekend, and today it became available for pre-order in limited quantities. The asking price is 46,980 yen (around $392) plus tax, and for that you get the special system, a matching DualShock 4 and 15 days of PS Plus. It also comes with codes for Final Fantasy Type-0 HD, the Episode Duscae demo of FF 15 and a unique PS4 theme.
The Touhou Project will make its console and portable debut in Japan starting next year with the launch of a series of officially licensed, fan-made games for the PlayStation 4 and PS Vita, series creator ZUN revealed this week (via Siliconera).

Named as the "most prolific fan-made shooter series" by Guinness World Records, the Touhou Project is a long-running, single-developer franchise helmed by its pseudonymous creator ZUN. Initially a hobbyist project, Touhou evolved to encompass a multitude of commercially produced spinoff games and media works from indie creators worldwide. Previous Touhou games include the acclaimed PC bullet-hell shooters Imperishable Night and Perfect Cherry Blossom.

Upcoming Touhou releases for PlayStation platforms include the roguelike Mystery Gensokyo and RPG Genius of Sappheiros for the PS Vita. The PlayStation 4 will host Touhou's bullet hell shooter Gensou no Rondo. An additional game, Touhou Sky Arena Matsuri, is also in development for an unnamed platform.

Release dates for the announced games are not yet known. A series of Touhou PlayStation Vita system themes will premiere throughout next year in Japan, priced at 432 yen each.
The latest game to join the violently dysfunctional Danganronpa family is Unlimited Battle, a co-op action affair coming to iOS next month in Japan. As Gematsu reports, it's a free-to-play game starring the protagonists of visual novel Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc, and in it players slingshot the chibi cast across the screen to attack enemies. Unlike other Danganronpas, Unlimited Battle supports four-player co-op as well as single-player.

If you're aware of Trigger Happy Havoc's story of entrapment and murder mystery, you may share our confusion as to how Unlimited Battle fits within the series' narrative. Then again, maybe that's misplaced worry. After all, we are talking about games starring a sociopathic robotic bear who masquerades as the principal of a high school...

One of the earliest entries in Konami's long-running Castlevania series is due for resurrection via the Wii U's Virtual Console service in Japan on December 17, Nintendo revealed this week.

Originally released for MSX home computers in 1986, Akumajou Dracula (aka Vampire Killer in European territories) resembles the 8-bit NES Castlevania aesthetically, but takes a more open-ended approach to its gameplay. This exploration-focused style returned in 1988's Castlevania 2: Simon's Quest, and became a defining element of later series entries like Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.

Unfortunately, given that MSX games are not featured in the Virtual Console's catalog stateside, it's unlikely that Vampire Killer will see a North American eShop release. Castlevania fans will have to be content with recent Wii U Virtual Console releases like Dracula X and Aria of Sorrow instead.
When Square Enix mused about Theatrhythm crossing to properties other than Final Fantasy, we all knew where that train of thought was headed. Sure enough, Theatrhythm Dragon Quest is now officially a thing, and it's coming to 3DS in Japan on March 26, 2015.

Details are sparse for now and there's no confirmation of a Western release, though both Theatrhythm Final Fantasy games have made their way to our shores. Square Enix is set to share more on the game at the Jump Festa event later this month, including a debut trailer.
Bravely Second is flying fairly to Japan on April 23, 2015, though there still isn't word on a Western release. The Bravely Default sequel was due on Japan's retail shelves this winter, but perhaps the publisher thought releasing it prematurely was unacceptable.

So, while Japan has to wait a little longer, it can look forward to a shiny-looking collector's pack at launch. The package is on offer for 14,800 yen ($123), and its extras include the "200 years later" companion art book and novel, a "mini soundtrack" on CD, a notebook, a Pope Agnes mini-figure (yes, Pope Agnes), a strap detailed with new character Magnolia, and a code that adds unspecified in-game content.
Over in Japan, one clever customer found a mini-game hidden in the New 3DS browser. Tap out in rhythm the first six notes of the Super Mario Bros. theme and voila, Breakout! Here's a suggestion for a name when the New 3DS heads West: "URL only break my heart."
Pokemon is turning Ruby and Sapphire into gold again, after the 3DS remakes reportedly hit 7.7 million shipments worldwide. According to an announcement published by Famitsu (via Siliconera), last week's European arrival of Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire provided a boost in the form of 35 percent more launch sales compared to Pokemon X and Y.

While Joystiq's Earnest "Nex" Cavalli didn't see the conversion factor in Pokemon ORAS, he did see plenty of "evolution and refinement" in the GBA games' remakes.

"Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire do little to overhaul the major pillars of a series that's long relied on the same set of classic ideas, but they don't have to," Nex concluded in his review. "The core mechanics of Pokemon remain immensely addictive, and Game Freak's latest coat of polish only enhances an already captivating adventure."
The super-size 3DS XL is about to be downsized in Japan, at least according to new details spotted on Nintendo's website. As Siliconera reports, Nintendo's 3DS site lists "ending production soon" notices for the seven XL colors available in the country. Nintendo's not announced anything formally, but it does seem the XL will soon be an ex-device in Japan

While Nintendo's notices indicate the regular 3DS is to remain in production, the company's gaze looks to be shifting to the New 3DS. Both the XL and regular versions of the enhanced handheld continue to top Japan's sales charts, and according to data tracker Media Create they're matching the strong initial pace of the DSi, itself an iteration of the DS. Media Create estimates the New 3DS, which launched in Japan back in October, will reach 1.2 million sales by the end of 2014.

Of course, there's no similar news of XL discontinuation for North America or Europe, where the New 3DS is still waiting on release dates.
Takashi Sensui is resigning from his role as head of Xbox Japan, according to Kotaku's translation of a report from Famitsu. Sensui has held his status since 2006, but rather than departing from Microsoft entirely, Kotaku reports he will support Xbox Japan and serve as General Manager for the Interactive Entertainment Business from Microsoft's US headquarters.

Replacing Sensui's role will be a collaborative effort between Yoshinami Takahashi, general manager of the Consumer and Partner Group, and Nobuyoshi Yokoi, boss of the Consumer and Partner Group Retail Business. Kotaku notes this is part of a reorganization effort within Xbox Japan.

The Xbox One only managed to move 23,562 units during the first week of its September debut in Japan, and adding up Media Create's weekly hardware sales data (as compiled in our weekly Stiq Figures series) puts the console at more than 38,000 for lifetime Japanese sales. In comparison, the PlayStation 4 cleared 322,000 units within its first two days in Japan, while the Wii U moved 308,570 during its Japanese launch.

The Xbox family has previously faced uphill battles in the region - for example, it took the Xbox 360 almost six years to surpass 1.5 million units in Japan.

Just as Persona Q hits the West, Atlus revealed that another Etrian Odyssey crossover is speeding rather than crawling its way onto 3DS. Etrian Odyssey and the Mystery Dungeon sees the map-making dungeon crawler series mix it up with Spike Chunsoft's long-running roguelike, best known in the West for the recent Pokemon spinoffs. The portable mash-up will be in Japanese hands in just a few months' time, starting March 5, 2015 to be specific.

As Tiny Cartridge notes, the last time Mystery Dungeon broke out of its Pokeball was some six years ago, when Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo's Dungeon trotted onto Wii. As per the recently-unveiled Etrian Odyssey 5, details are scant at the moment beyond a new trailer, which you can check out below the break. That includes word of a Western release, but both series have traditionally found their way abroad in recent years. Plus, there's some English text right at the end of the video: "Dungeon RPG is forever. This is the new origin."
Continue reading Etrian Odyssey's next crossover maps out Mystery Dungeon

Etrian Odyssey's next crossover maps out Mystery Dungeon originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 25 Nov 2014 10:00:00 EST. Nintendo will peel the proverbial banana that is its line-up of upcoming games in a new Direct streaming tomorrow, November 5. The Nintendo of America broadcast will provide "updates about upcoming games for 3DS and Wii U," and it's set to go out at 2PM PT/5PM ET.

As ever, Nintendo's European and Japanese branches are running simultaneous broadcasts for their respective regions; that's 10PM UK time tomorrow and 7AM in Japan on November 6.
Continue reading It's that Nintendo Direct time again, broadcasting tomorrow

It's that Nintendo Direct time again, broadcasting tomorrow originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 04 Nov 2014 09:00:00 EST. Final Fantasy 7 G-Bike, the mobile adaptation of Final Fantasy 7's motorcycle combat mini-game, has arrived for Japanese iOS and Android devices, according to Famitsu (as translated by Siliconera). Announced back in June, G-Bike buckles players into the role of FF7 hero Cloud Strife as he heroically destroys <s>taxpayer-funded highways</s> monsters and other bad guys with his trademark Buster Sword.

Those in the West looking to swing bladed objects while riding questionably-safe vehicles at dangerously high speeds will have to wait a bit longer for G-Bike to become available for their devices. Unfortunately, we're not sure how long, as Square Enix has not revealed a stateside or European launch date.

Hmmm, maybe if we collect enough materia ...

Square Enix's Dynasty Warriors-styled action-RPG Dragon Quest Heroes will launch for PlayStation consoles in Japan on February 26, but series fanatics can grab a special edition PlayStation 4 adorned with a Metal Slime later this year.

The Metal Slime PlayStation 4 retail package debuts in Japan on December 11, bundling a limited-edition console with a silver DualShock 4 controller, a code for a Dragon Quest Heroes PS4 theme, and a voucher that allows console owners to download Dragon Quest Heroes 24 hours before it hits store shelves.

If you'd rather not coat your console in metallic goo, the Metal Slime figurine itself is detachable. Look at that goofy grin, though! How could you even think of removing it from its rightful place atop the PS4? You monster.

Square Enix additionally revealed that Dragon Quest Heroes will run at 60 frames-per-second on the PlayStation 4, while the PS3 edition is locked at 30 FPS. Neither Dragon Quest Heroes nor the limited-edition PlayStation 4 have been announced for a North American release.
Enhanced re-release Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate has already hunted and gathered two million shipments in Japan after hitting retail shelves four days ago. Capcom specified the figure as shipments rather than direct sales to consumers, but it does include download purchases.

The early data suggests Capcom's on course to meet its projection of 3.9 million units for the 3DS action-RPG. After all, Ultimate isn't out in North America and Europe yet, and the original Monster Hunter 4 was limited to Japan. If Ultimate does go on to reach that figure it won't be far off the success of its predecessor, with Capcom noting today Monster Hunter 4 shipped more than 4.1 million copies - just to reiterate, that's in Japan alone.
It's more of the Samus, but not as you might expect. As revealed in today's Nintendo Direct for Japan, the latest Nintendo collaboration for Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate brings Metroid-style gear to Capcom's multiplayer action-RPG. Capcom Unity along with Nintendo of Europe then indicated the Metroquipment is headed to the Western versions of the 3DS game, too.

Details are sparse at present, but as Siliconera reports, Nintendo's Direct stream tied the collaboration to Wii title Metroid: Other M. According to Siliconera, players can undertake quests to hunt down what's needed to make both the Varia and Zero suit as well as the Arm Cannon-like weapon featured in a new trailer - you can check out the vid below the break.
3DS users can spice up their portable lives with new Home Menu themes, available now not just in Japan but in North America and Europe too. There are five free themes that give the startup screen a basic splash of color, but if you're after something with more pizazz there are purchasable themes too. These themes don't just change the menu wallpaper, but also alter icons and folders as well as sound effects and music. The Zelda: A Link Between Worlds theme, for example, features the game's "Hyrule Main Theme" as its menu music, while the top and bottom screens display the mirror worlds of Hyrule and Lorule.

The current selection, with each theme priced between a buck or two, includes liveries for Mario & Luigi, other Nintendo stars like Yoshi and Peach, and "Geometric Patterns" for those who prefer stripes and polka dots on the go. To start sprucing up your portable following a quick system update, go to the Change Theme menu via the Home Menu button on the top left of the startup screen. There's a specific shop for the purchasable themes, but if you're not prepared to pay you can go with a simple red, blue, yellow, pink or black look, or stick with the default white. Heads-up: aqua blue 3DS plus simple blue theme equals lovely blue loveliness.

Also, if you're holding out for other styles, Nintendo of Europe says an Animal Crossing: New Leaf theme should hit the shop towards of the end of the month.
Continue reading Give your 3DS a Mario paint job with new themes, out now

Give your 3DS a Mario paint job with new themes, out now originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 07 Oct 2014 07:20:00 EST. Like a hunk of raw meat rotating over a campfire, Nintendo is turning up the heat ahead of Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate's release in Japan with a new Direct broadcast. Nintendo of Japan announced the game-focused stream is due to air on Wednesday, October 8 at 8PM Japan time (that's 4AM ET, 7AM PT and midday UK). To tune in, point your clickers and eyeballs here.

Given that the 3DS action-RPG hits Japan's retail shelves later this week and there's no word yet from Nintendo of America or Europe on a concurrent stream, chances are there's only a Japanese version of the broadcast. That said, the Ultimate version of MH4 is the same one that'll mark the game's debut in the West in early 2015. So, as long as you don't mind the language barrier, the video should offer an extended look at the latest edition of Capcom's multiplayer beastie-besting series.
Japan is getting special, The Evil Within-branded PS4 consoles exclusive to the Japanese Sony Store with pre-orders starting in October, Siliconera reports. The PS4s come in both white and black, and they feature silhouetted images of an imposing asylum across the shiny portion of the console. In Japan, the game is titled "Psycho Break," and the name is included in the design.

There's no word on pricing in Japan or whether these consoles will make their way westward. The Evil Within is due out on October 14 in North America and Europe, for PS4, Xbox One, Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.

Do you hate the staid, utilitarian aesthetic of the Nintendo 3DS' Home screen? Do you live in Japan? Come next month, Nintendo may have a solution for your woes.

When the handheld's next firmware update rolls out, it will include access to a selection of 50 themes designed to alter the appearance of the 3DS' Home screen. Prices on these themes range from 100 to 200 yen (roughly $0.90 to $1.80) and alongside various color-coordinated designs, the themes also feature standout Nintendo characters, such as Mario and the anthropomorphic critters of Animal Crossing.

It's currently unknown if Nintendo has plans to launch the themes outside of Japan, and our attempts to pry further information from the company's representatives was met with a boilerplate "no comment." However, if you can contain your jealousy, you can visit Nintendo's Japanese website to view the themes for yourself.

The spectral horrors of Fatal Frame 5: The Black Haired Shrine Maiden will find themselves stalking a more dangerous foe than they're used to, thanks to a cross-publisher cameo from the Dead or Alive fighting game franchise.

According to the latest issue of Famitsu, Yosuke Hayashi, head of Dead or Alive developer Team Ninja, requested that the next Fatal Frame entry feature an appearance by Ayane. In lieu of appearing as a secret costume, the Fatal Frame developers have given Ayane her own playable scenario that sees the purple kunoichi sneaking through darkened halls while wielding her own unique weapon. Despite the new, eerie setting, fans of the female form need not fear that Ayane's grown any more modest. Famitsu claims the Fatal Frame team paid special attention to the character's unrealistically buoyant bosoms. "[The developers] spent a lot of time adjusting things like the wobble of her chest," claims Famitsu. "Team Ninja gave them lots of advice."

Fatal Frame 5: The Black Haired Shrine Maiden debuted in Japan on September 27. There's currently no word on a Western release for the survival horror game.

Disgaea 5 already has a March 26, 2015 release date for Japan, just weeks after it debuted at Sony's pre-Tokyo Game Show conference. The PS4 tactical RPG is coming in both download and retail forms, and as Gematsu notes, a demo is headed for the PlayStation Store in Japan sometime next month. For gameplay footage, check out the new trailer below the break.

The next entry in Nippon Ichi Software's off-the-wall mix of demonic heroes, turn-based tactics and volatile penguins is exclusive to PS4, and according to reports NIS wanted to make a game that took advantage of Sony's new hardware. For example, NIS says Disgaea 5 can feature 100 characters on the screen at the same time, compared to just 10 on a PS3 version.
Continue reading The demons of Disgaea 5 take on Japan in March 2015

The demons of Disgaea 5 take on Japan in March 2015 originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 19 Sep 2014 09:30:00 EST. Sony is now forecasting a 230 billion yen ($2.15 billion) loss for the fiscal year ending in March 2015, a revision nearly five times more than the company previously projected. The Japanese electronics giant was expecting a 50 billion yen loss, but today it announced it's downgrading the value of its mobiles business by 180 billion yen ($1.68 billion) following an internal review.

Sony began the review in July after cutting forecast smartphone sales by 14 percent following a sluggish opening quarter. The mobile business' "mid-range plan" is now no longer focused on growth, but instead designed to "reduce risk and volatility, and deliver more stable profits."
Continue reading Sony ups loss forecast to $2 billion following smartphone struggles

Sony ups loss forecast to $2 billion following smartphone struggles originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 17 Sep 2014 05:30:00 EST. Hatsune Miku is all about music and love, and she wouldn't want anyone - or any country - to feel left out. Hatsune Miku: Project Mirai Remix is due out on 3DS in western territories in 2015, but it's also heading to Japan as Hatsune Miku: Project Mirai Deluxe, scheduled to launch in spring 2015.

The new Project Mirai is a "complete" version of Hatsune Miku: Project Mirai 2, which launched in Japan in 2013. Project Mirai Remix is the first time Hatsune Miku will appear on 3DS in the western world, following recent series launches on Vita and PS3 with the Project Diva games. Project Diva F 2nd is due out on western PS3s and Vitas this fall.

Everyone's doing the Smash in Japan, where Nintendo's brand-spanning brawler is past one million sales just on 3DS. After launching Super Smash Bros for the handheld on September 13, Nintendo announced sales (including download ones) surpassed the seven-figure mark during the game's first week on retail shelves. According to Nintendo, the other 3DS games to achieve the same feat are Pokemon X and Y, Monster Hunter 4 and Yokai Watch 2.

Not that it's been the smoothest launch ever, though. First there were the leaks of the roster ahead of time, then Nintendo had to apologize after mistakenly banning players who'd fallen foul of a bug. Still, it looks like a strong start for Smash 3DS ahead of its Western launch on October 3, which'll followed by the Wii U version sometime this holiday.
Nintendo's New 3DS is getting Poke-themed limited editions in Japan to mark the launch of Pokemon Alpha Sapphire and Omega Ruby. The red Groudon and blue Kyogre systems are coming to the country's Pokemon Center stores alongside the games on November 21, and both handhelds feature suede faceplates for that extra luxurious feel you've always craved maybe when capturing pocket monsters. If you want in it's 19,000 yen (around $177) a piece, and they don't come with copies of the games.

The New 3DS itself launches in Japan on October 11 in both regular and XL models, and its New features include the right-hand analog C-stick, ZL and ZR shoulder buttons, built-in NFC tech, greater battery life, improved CPU and customizable faceplates, suede or otherwise. As for when the New 3DS launches outside of Japan, Nintendo's ruled out bringing it West in this calendar year. But you can nab Alpha Sapphire and Omega Ruby when the two 3DS remakes launch in North America on November 21 and Europe on November 28.
When Octodad: Dadliest Catch launches on PS4s in Japan, it'll be with the snazzy new logo seen above, and a fancy localized name: "something like Okutodaddo: Don't Call Me an Octopus," Young Horses co-founder Phil Tibitoski says on Twitter. Adorable.

Sony Computer Entertainment Japan designed the logo and "they did such an awesome job," Tibitoski writes. The new art will make an appearance at Tokyo Game Show next week.

Japanese players who've got hold of Super Smash Bros. early are determined to reveal the last bunch of characters Nintendo's been holding back. Several yet-to-be confirmed characters have emerged on streams from Japan today, including a few we suspected from earlier leaks.

So far, Twitch users have revealed Duck Hunt Dog, Ganondorf, Wario, Dr Mario, Dark Pit, Ness, Falco and Mr Game & Watch in the 3DS fighter. Nintendo's yet to officially confirm those characters, but they now seem likely to show up in tomorrow's NicoNico broadcast ahead of the handheld game's launch in Japan on Saturday, September 13.
Xbox failed to make Japan the land of the rising One by a long stretch, with Microsoft's latest console mustering just 23,562 units sold in its opening week. The figures, recorded by Famitsu from Thursday, September 4 to Sunday, September 7, fall well behind the two-day 62,135 sold by the Xbox 360 nearly a decade ago. Three years prior, the original Xbox sold 123,929 units in its opening weekend, more than five times the Xbox One's numbers.

The sales figures are even more unflattering when compared to the more recent launches of the PS4 and Wii U. Sony's console shifted 322,000 units during its first two days in Japan, and the Wii U's launch weekend reaped 308,000 sales back in 2012. According to Famitsu, the PS2 enjoyed the best ever launch in Japan with 630,552 sales across its opening weekend.
Continue reading Xbox One launch didn't ignite Japan, just 23K consoles sold

Xbox One launch didn't ignite Japan, just 23K consoles sold originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 10 Sep 2014 07:30:00 EST. Nintendo continues its holiday push with an 8-hour "gameplay" stream this week that's set to feature among others the handheld Super Smash Bros. The House of Mario is broadcasting from its American headquarters this Friday, September 12, though it didn't give specific times to tune in. Nintendo said it'll first "be covering some upcoming games" for Wii U and 3DS before getting into gameplay, but it coyly kept what those other games are beneath its cap.

It's hard to know if we can expect a Direct-like slew of announcements or not, but it's safer to say there'll be more Smash info, simply because the game's almost out. The 3DS Smash launches in Japan on Saturday, September 13, and over there NicoNico is preparing its own Smash broadcast, also scheduled for this Friday (3AM PT/6AM ET/11AM UK). So, if there is any news left - and supposedly leaked character videos suggest there is - now's the time, though that info may arrive earlier in the day during NicoNico's broadcast
