Mortal Kombat's newest kombatant certainly came as a surprise to the seasoned MK vets here at Joystiq; we were expecting Tanya, or maybe even Meat, but Krueger? Dude wasn't even on our radar, let alone our fantasy character selection screens. As out-of-left-field as his inclusion seems to us, series co-founder Ed Boon says that slasher villains have always been on the table as potential new characters.

"Over the years, we've certainly had a number of conversations about guest characters," said Boon during an interview with PlayStation Blog. "A number of names were run by us: Jason, Michael Meyers [sic] and all those guys. Freddy Kreuger, we felt, was the most instantly recognizable and he fits in with Mortal Kombat with his claws." We think they made the right choice; why would anyone put the guy from So I Married An Axe Murderer in a Mortal Kombat game?

Sure, Heavy Rain was great, but what was with all the story? Don't you just wish someone would come along, strip out that cinematic nonsense and leave only the visceral thrill of repeatedly calling for your missing son while tearing through a shopping mall?

For you, there's Press X to Jason, a low-rez action/puzzle/platformer/adventure from Heavy.com that nails just one mechanic: Yelling for Jason. [Fair warning: If you don't know how this particular Heavy Rain scene plays out, like, in the real game, you may not want to play Press X to Jason just yet.]

If afterwards you still aren't sure about little Jason's fate, you'll be happy to know that we've located him, and he's on Twitter.
It would be cool enough to see a ten-minute-long video showing a man carving an intricate statue of BioShock 2's Big Daddy out of a tree using a chainsaw. That coolness factor is multiplied by ten when the person doing the carving is dressed up like known overnight camp murderer, Jason Voorhees. A video like that would finally prove that the prolific butcher has a sensitive side, capable of creating lovely, intricate works of art with his manslaughter instruments.

Such a video exists, dear friends, and is posted after the jump. You should check it out, because, man, tree carving is surprisingly hypnotic.
Hey, parents-to-be currently living in the U.K. -- have we got a sweet deal for you. We know you're probably excited for the arrival of your bouncing bundle of joy, but if you're nearing your highly anticipated due date, you've probably begun to wonder how you can use this whole "pregnancy" situation for your own personal gain (short of ... well, you know). Ponder no longer -- Codemasters, in a near inappropriate display of eccentric gusto, has a way for you to turn your brood into a glorified raffle ticket: Just christen the little guy with the name "Jason".

Whilst working on last year's Rise of the Argonauts, Codemasters made the shocking discovery that "Jason" (like, of the Argonauts) had slipped from the U.K.'s top 50 most popular baby names, overtaken by "Jack," "Oliver" and "Sir Pumphrey Poncington of Yorkshire." To restore the Jason population, the publisher has begun the "Bring Back Jason" campaign, in which expecting parents send in the birth certificates of their newborn Jasons for a chance to win "a year's supply" of Codemasters games. Awesome. Anyone want us to get them pregnant? We'll totally go halfsies with you.
Codemasters wants you to name your baby 'Jason' originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 16 Feb 2009 21:55:00 EST. You know, where we make a statement and then italicize the second part of the sentence to indicate that this is where the funny is. When you work in cynicism, sentimentality and unfettered joy are difficult to host. You can't be contemptuous one moment but filled with child-like joy the next. Thus, we tend to judge the value of holidays based primarily on if it grants us a day off from work.

Yet one holiday that seems to entertain even the crabbiest of bloggers is Halloween. Around the world, the lead-up to October 31st has us enjoying the orange and black decorations, scanning late-night cable for horror movies, and attempting to rationalize buying abundant amounts of candy at the counter of the drug store. Sure, we can be as bitter and weathered as we allow ourselves to be, but there's no denying the joy of carving pumpkins, piecing together a costume, and perhaps even enjoying a good scare or two.

As gaming is always finding new ways to entertain us, fans of things that go bump in the night have no shortage of spooky games. Developers have been attempting to give us frights ever since the obscenely terrible Halloween for the Atari 2600. Good gameplay can survive regardless of technology, but generating a convincing scare is usually dependent on quality audio and visuals. Since top-notch technology and mature content have inconsistently been attributes of Nintendo, our favorite line of consoles is slightly lacking in good scares. But while the Silent Hills and Fatal Frames of the other guys have given us plenty of sleepless nights, Nintendo's consoles are home to a handful of underwear-changing moments. Here's the Top 5 moments that, speaking in strict technical terms, give us the heebie-jeebies.

NEXT >>

The Top 5 is a weekly feature that provides us with a forum to share our opinions on various aspects of the video game culture, and provides you with a forum to tell us how wrong we are. If you've watched the latest trailer for Codemasters' Rise of the Argonauts and have been wondering about the music you've since been humming along to in the shower, you can thank film and television muse, Tyler Bates.

Bates, whose credits include the testosterone-fueled 300 and the upcoming movie adaptation of The Watchmen, will provide accompaniment for Jason as he flexes his mythical muscles against both gods and monsters this fall when Rise of the Argonauts ships for the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC. The Liquid Entertainment-developed title represents Bates' first stab at scoring a video game, and while we're not prepared to award him the Golden Fleece just yet, we certainly approve of what we've heard so far.
300, The Watchmen composer scoring Rise of the Argonauts originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 11 Aug 2008 08:00:00 EST.
It's Saturday, and obviously, that means another week in the Mii Spotlight! This week, however, we offer something a little different than our usual fare. Or, depending on how you look at things, it could be seen as exactly the same as our usual fare. Decide for yourself!
Continue reading Mii Spotlight: Take a look inside

Mii Spotlight: Take a look inside originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 09 Jun 2007 18:00:00 EST.
