"It's like using it as a controller rather than really looking into the world."</div><br />Carmack would like to fix that, and he is now working with Palmer Luckey and the highly talked about <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/oculus-rift">Oculus Rift</a> in order to do so. By combining Luckey's hardware with Carmack's software, they hope to remove a lot of barriers gamers typically experience when trying to immerse themselves in a virtual world.<br /><br />When I put on the VR headset to look into the new and improved world of <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/Doom-3-BFG-Edition/">Doom 3 BFG Edition</a></em>, I almost lost balance. My brain seemed to be fighting with itself in terms of where my body was, physically. I knew I was standing in a hotel room of the Hilton Anatole and that moving my feet wouldn't have any impact on my gameplay, while at the same time I felt like I was running through corridors on Mars, dodging fireballs from imps as I played <em>Doom</em>.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/doom-3-bfg-edition-quakecon-2012/">Doom 3 BFG Edition (QuakeCon 2012)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/doom-3-bfg-edition-quakecon-2012/#5189614"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/08/d31_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/doom-3-bfg-edition-quakecon-2012/#5189615"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/08/d32_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/doom-3-bfg-edition-quakecon-2012/#5189616"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/08/d33_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/doom-3-bfg-edition-quakecon-2012/#5189617"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/08/d34_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/doom-3-bfg-edition-quakecon-2012/#5189618"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/08/d35_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/08/07/looking-into-the-world-of-carmack-s-doom-through-the-oculus-rift/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Looking into the world of Carmack's Doom through the Oculus Rift</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/08/07/looking-into-the-world-of-carmack-s-doom-through-the-oculus-rift/">Looking into the world of Carmack's Doom through the Oculus Rift</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 07 Aug 2012 15:00:00 EST. The mobile games division, responsible for <em>Wolfenstein RPG, Rage HD</em> and other <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/id-software,@mobile">mobile games</a>, has been shut down, to shift focus to big games, including <em>Doom 4</em>. The trailer, created by a Los Angeles-based studio named Artifact, shows dozens of game designers talking about their craft and the place games take in the history of expressive media. The project aims to "give game designers their due as innovators and influencers of culture."<br /><br />Critical Path is described as the culmination of "two years of filming and archiving" interviews, according to Artifact's <a href="http://hello.artifactla.com/Critical-Path">site</a>. "User feedback will influence future interviews, which will be added to the archive on an ongoing basis."<br /><br />Among the 37 names listed at the end of the trailer are Warren Spector, Jenova Chen, John Carmack, David Cage, Cliff Bleszinski, Ken Levine, Peter Molyneux, Tim Schafer and Hideo Kojima. The publisher announced this morning that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/05/30/doom-3-bfg-edition-brings-hell-to-360-ps3-pc-this-fall-with/"><em>Doom 3</em> "BFG Edition"</a> - which includes "re-mastered versions" of <em>Doom 3 </em>and its "Resurrection of Evil" DLC, as well as the new content dubbed "The Lost Mission" - arrives on October 16 in North America and October 19 in Europe.<br /><br />Should all that <em>Doom 3</em> content not be enough, both <em>Doom 1</em> and <em>2</em> are included in the repackaging, and the whole schebang runs $39.99 on 360/PS3, while it's $10 cheaper on PC. Of course, if you wanna play it in virtual reality, <em>Lawnmower Man</em>-style, that's gonna require a heck of a lot more money. And <a href="http://content.usatoday.com/communities/gamehunters/post/2012/06/doom-3-comes-to-virtual-head-mounted-displays-/1">being friends with John Carmack</a> would also help.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/06/19/doom-3-bfg-edition-bringing-hellspawn-to-retail-on-oct-16-in/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Doom 3 'BFG Edition' bringing Hellspawn to retail on Oct. 16 in NA, Oct. 19 in EU</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/06/19/doom-3-bfg-edition-bringing-hellspawn-to-retail-on-oct-16-in/">Doom 3 'BFG Edition' bringing Hellspawn to retail on Oct. 16 in NA, Oct. 19 in EU</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 19 Jun 2012 10:15:00 EST. Today, however, the game is a full 20 years old, and id Software is throwing the classic FPS a celebration. Rather than sending all the game's fans party hats and individual slices of cake, though, id's ported <em>Wolf 3D</em> <a href="http://wolfenstein.bethsoft.com/">to web browsers</a>, making it totally free!<br /><br />But perhaps you're not around a computer at the moment, and you'd prefer to play on the go? id's got that covered too, making the iOS port of <em>Wolfenstein 3D</em> free for today only (<a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/wolfenstein-3d-classic-platinum/id309470478?mt=8">the iTunes page</a> still reflects a $1.99 price as of this writing, but Bethesda says it'll flip to free "later today").<br /><br />Or maybe you've already played <em>Wolf 3D</em> more than you'll ever need to? Creator John Carmack recorded a director commentary aimed at superfans of the series, which we've embedded just below the break. Let us know if he talks about rockets at all!<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/05/09/wolfenstein-3d-celebrating-its-20-year-history-by-going-free-on/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Wolfenstein 3D celebrating its 20-year history by going free on browsers, iOS</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/05/09/wolfenstein-3d-celebrating-its-20-year-history-by-going-free-on/">Wolfenstein 3D celebrating its 20-year history by going free on browsers, iOS</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 09 May 2012 10:30:00 EST. If you've been waiting for id Software to open source its retroactively titled id Tech 4 technology, first used in 2004's <em>Doom 3</em>, your seven-year test of patience is nearly over. John Carmack used yesterday's Halloween opportunity to burst out of a monster closet (on Twitter) declaring, "doom 3 source is packaged and tested, we are waiting on final lawyer clearance for release."<br />
	<br />
	And while seven years seems like just enough time to ensure the absence of commercial viability for the tech, remember <em>Prey 2</em> will be using a modified version, which <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/18/prey-2-producer-on-taking-new-direction-with-capable-id-tech/">producer Matt Bisenius called "capable."</a> We're also going to take this opportunity to prematurely mark 2018 down in our calendars, for the <em>Rage</em> / id Tech 5 source code release.</p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/11/01/doom-3-source-code-packaged-and-tested-waiting-on-legal-ok/">Doom 3 source code 'packaged and tested,' waiting on legal OK</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 01 Nov 2011 12:30:00 EST. You've been waiting to get your mitts on the source code to <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/doom-3"><em>Doom 3</em></a> (how do you type with those mitts on?), and your time is almost here. First announced at <a href="http://news.bigdownload.com/2009/08/14/quakecon-2009-john-carmack-keynote-highlights/">QuakeCon 2009</a>, John Carmack confirmed plans today, during QuakeCon <em>2011</em>, to release the source to the 2004 FPS following the launch of id's new hotness, <em>Rage</em>. The code will be released this year.<br />
<br />
According to VG247's liveblog, Carmack said in his keynote that these releases of Id code are a "challenge to other developers," and are beneficial to both Id and "the community." They're also a QuakeCon tradition -- last year, <em>Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory</em> and <em>Return to Castle Wolfenstein</em> were <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/13/wolfenstein-enemy-territory-and-return-to-castle-wolfenstein-so/">opened up</a>.<br />
<br />
In related news, the <a href="http://store.steampowered.com/sale/quakecon_doom">Doom &amp; Quake Complete Pack</a> is on sale on Steam right now for $30.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/04/doom-3-source-code-going-free-after-rage-launch/">Doom 3 source code going free after Rage launch</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 04 Aug 2011 19:30:00 EST. People have been arguing about violence in video games for as long as video games have had violence for people to argue about, and few titles have come under as much sustained fire as Id Software's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Doom"><em>Doom</em></a>. It would stand to reason then, that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/john-carmack">John Carmack</a>, a man who was instrumental in the game's development and the FPS revolution that followed, would be chief among those most affected by the debate's wide-reaching ramifications. Not so much, it turns out.<br />
<br />
"I never took seriously the violence in video games debate. It was basically talking points for people to get on CNN and espouse their stuff on there," he said, <a href="http://www.industrygamers.com/news/doom-creator-games-are-cathartic-reduce-aggression-and-violence/">speaking with IndustryGamers</a>. "In the end it didn't matter, it didn't make any impact on things. I never felt threatened by it and it turned out not to matter." Carmack also believes that violent games help calm agressive players and are, in-fact, good for us:
<meta charset="utf-8" />
"If you go to QuakeCon and you walk by and you see the people there [and compare that to] a random cross section of a college campus, you're probably going to find a more peaceful crowd of people at the gaming convention."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/30/the-violence-in-games-debate-didnt-matter-says-carmack/">The violence-in-games debate 'didn't matter,' says Carmack</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 30 Jul 2011 17:30:00 EST. John Carmack, id Software's technical director, reminds us of our technical incompetence daily on Twitter. Yet, <a href="http://twitter.com/ID_AA_Carmack/status/30655938016837632">one tweet</a> managed to catch our attention and make <em>some</em> semblance of sense to our puny brains. Carmack expects "the Sony NGP to perform about a generation beyond smart phones with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/27/psp2-ngp-next-generation-portable/">comparable specs</a>." That should theoretically give Sony's handheld a competitive edge over the next slate of Android and iOS devices.<br />
<br />
"<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Application_programming_interface">Low level APIs</a>" may enable developers to get the most out of the NGP. Essentially, low-level APIs give the developer <a href="http://discussion.forum.nokia.com/forum/showthread.php?118466-HIgh-Level-API-s-Vs-Low-Level-API-s">more direct control</a>. However, it's unclear if Carmack is speaking out of first-hand experience -- we don't see id Software/Bethesda on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/27/heres-a-big-list-of-developers-and-publishers-working-on-ngp-pr/">this list</a> of NGP developers.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/27/ids-carmack-comments-on-ngps-theoretical-performance/">id's Carmack comments on NGP's theoretical performance</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 27 Jan 2011 13:50:00 EST. Now that <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/rage-mutant-bash-tv">Rage: Mutant Bash TV</a> </em>has landed on the App Store, id Software's John Carmack is already talking about what's next for the developer on Apple's iOS platform: more <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/rage"><em>Rage</em></a>. Specifically, a game focusing on the driving aspect of <em>Rage </em>on consoles and PC (shown in the above screenshot). <br />
<br />
"I think we have a really good idea of what we can do in this format, and I'm really excited about getting onto the next game, getting onto what we can do with another slice of <em>Rage</em>," Carmack told Joystiq today, going on to say: "Taking some of the wasteland material and having riding along in the dune buggies, jumping over ravines, that kind of stuff. There's more graphics stuff that we can bring in and add yet another level of improvement and polish to the visuals." If all goes as planned, the game will hit iOS before <em>Rage </em>arrives in stores.<br />
<br />
"I would like to do a <em>Quake Live</em> derivative for iOS, maybe focusing on the lightning gun, and call it 'Lightning Arena' or something, that would be a full roam-around FPS game," he also said, talking about ideas for future iOS titles from id. That's what id Software's resident technology guru, John Carmack, told Joystiq during an interview conducted today, though he admits, "I don't even know what I'd want to do yet." <br />
<br />
"I can't use Kinect for our real games; there just isn't a place for our current FPSes on there," Carmack said. "But it's an interesting technology, and an Xbox Live game would be the perfect platform to do something like that on, at about the same scale of [a game for] an iOS device."<br />
<br />
Given that Carmack spends so much time working on Rage for consoles -- and has "spent his budget" of time outside that, working on Rage for iOS -- it'll probably be some time before Carmack even has a chance to think a what he'd do for Kinect. Actually making the game is another matter altogether. Still, it's nice to know there's an <a href="http://www.armadilloaerospace.com/n.x/Armadillo/Home/FAQ">actual rocket scientist</a> thinking about the possibilities for Microsoft's motion-control tech. Take that, mere <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dRPEns8MS2o">robot makers</a>!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/11/18/carmack-kinect-xbla/">id's Carmack wants to make a Kinect game for XBLA</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 18 Nov 2010 18:00:00 EST. id Software head <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/john-carmack">John Carmack</a> has at least one very important trait in common with gangsta rap star (and gaming magnate) <a href="http://twitter.com/finallevel">Ice-T</a>: he's really fun to follow <a href="http://twitter.com/ID_AA_Carmack">on Twitter</a>. When he's not dropping enigmatic missives like, "Closed myself in a 1600 gallon tank for an hour. CO2 rose to 3430 ppm, humidity rose to 71%. No discomfort," he's giving his followers a <a href="http://twitter.com/ID_AA_Carmack/status/4898670105329665">taste of news</a> before it hits anywhere else. "<em>Rage mobile</em> has been approved," he let his followers know this morning. "It should be on the App Store tomorrow morning!"<br />
<br />
Rather than directly port the forthcoming FPS, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/rage-mutant-bash-tv">Rage: Mutant Bash TV</a></em> is an on-rails shooter set in the world of <em>Rage</em>. No price has been set for the game, but id's most expensive iPhone game to date has been the $7 <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/doom-resurrection">Doom: Resurrection</a></em> -- another on-rails shooter.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/11/17/rage-mutant-bash-tv-should-hit-app-store-tomorrow/">Rage: Mutant Bash TV 'should' hit App Store tomorrow</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 17 Nov 2010 12:00:00 EST. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/rage"><em> Rage</em></a> represents a rather large milestone for Carmack's id team. Not only is it the first game to use id Tech 4, it's the first id game to be published by new owner Bethesda. It's also the first new IP from the team in over a decade, since 1996's release of <em>Quake</em>. If a recent interview in the Official PlayStation Magazine (via <a href="http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=259706">CVG</a>) is to be believed, it's likely that the <em>new</em> new IP from id will be just as far away.<br />
<br />
"I doubt we're going to do another IP," Carmack told OPM. "We want to support <em>Wolfenstein</em>, <em>Doom</em> and <em>Quake</em> -- and hopefully we can add <em>Rage</em> onto that. ... Obviously, if <em>Rage</em> is a success then we'll want to do a <em>Rage 2</em>." Considering the lengthy development cycles at id (evidenced by the currently-MIA <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/doom-4"><em>Doom 4</em></a>) who knows when the next new IP will bubble out of the company?<br />
<br />
Especially with that <em>Commander Keen</em> reboot getting in the way, right?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/13/ids-carmack-wants-to-support-current-franchises-new-ips-unlike/">id's Carmack wants to support current franchises, new IPs unlikely</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 13 Aug 2010 21:00:00 EST. As part of the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/quakecon-2010">QuakeCon</a> festivities, id's John Carmack revealed something that should excite the modding community: <em>source code</em>. Authors can now access source code for both Splash Damage's multiplayer-focused <em>Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory</em> and 2001's series reboot, <em>Return to Castle Wolfenstein</em>, through id's FTP, which we've linked below. <br />
<br />
Both games' sources are made available through the GNU General Public License agreement, which states that the code is available for both free and commercial use, so long as the individual using the code credits id Software and doesn't try to claim it as their own. If you want to tinker with either game, check out the convenient Big Download link below. Happy modding!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/13/wolfenstein-enemy-territory-and-return-to-castle-wolfenstein-so/">Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory and Return to Castle Wolfenstein source code available</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 13 Aug 2010 18:01:00 EST. Never one to back down from a challenge, id's technical wunderkind John Carmack has somehow - we imagine with the aid of The Dark Arts - managed to condense its latest game onto the iPhone. Speaking during a live keynote at the annual QuakeCon in Dallas Texas, Carmack announced that id's delivering a version of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/Rage/"><em>Rage</em></a> (replete with MegaTextures and a 60 frames-per-second framerate!) onto the iPhone. While the demo was given on the iPhone 4, he said it could run on 3GS and looked best on iPad. <br />
<br />
The game came about from an experiment with something on the Wii and, in keeping with that experimental model, <em>Rage</em> for iPhone won't have a four-year dev cycle: It will be out this year, before <em>Rage</em>, and it will be cheap, in keeping with the iPhone App Store's model. A second <em>Rage</em> iPhone game will be released alongside the release of the PC/console release next year, and Carmack is still "spot-surveying" the Android market to determine if it's worth supporting. He said it won't happen "this cycle" but he'll reevaluate in about six months. More news from QuakeCon as we hear it.<br />
<br />
[<strong>Update</strong>: Now with video, found after the break! <strong>Update 2</strong>: John Carmack <a href="http://twitter.com/ID_AA_Carmack/status/21068255886">clarified on Twitter</a>: "The iPhone demo was not "idtech5" on ios, it was from scratch new code. A tool in rage exported custom data for it."] <br type="_moz" /><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/12/quakecon-rage-coming-to-iphone-running-at-60fps/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>QuakeCon: Rage coming to iPhone, running at 60fps [Update: now with video!]</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/12/quakecon-rage-coming-to-iphone-running-at-60fps/">QuakeCon: Rage coming to iPhone, running at 60fps [Update: now with video!]</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 12 Aug 2010 16:20:00 EST. The official schedule has been announced for this year's QuakeCon, which is taking place August 12-15 in Dallas, Texas. In addition to the usual id gallery, none other than Jason West and Vince Zampella of the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/04/12/respawn-entertainment/">newly formed Respawn Entertainment</a> will be in attendance. <br />
<br />
The ousted Infinity Ward heads will sit on a panel the Friday morning of the conference called "Building Blockbusters," talking with Tim Willits and Tom Howard of id and Bethesda about how to make big games (like <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/04/12/vince-zampella-and-jason-west-talk-respawn-entertainment/">the "huge summer blockbuster" they're supposedly working on</a>). Todd Alderman, also of Respawn, will sit on a panel the previous day speaking about "The World of Design" with a few other developers.<br />
<br />
Elsewhere in the schedule, John Carmack and Richard Garriott will hold court on Thursday evening discussing rockets and space travel, and Friday and Saturday afternoons will bring preview panels for <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/rage"><em>RAGE</em></a> and <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/brink"><em>Brink</em></a>. Sounds like an excellent weekend of FPS gaming -- so if you're in Dallas (or plan to be there), the event is free and open to the public.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/07/30/respawn-entertainment-richard-garriott-to-appear-at-quakecon-20/">Respawn duo, Richard Garriott speaking at QuakeCon 2010</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 30 Jul 2010 20:30:00 EST. Between the recent filing to <a href="http://tarr.uspto.gov/servlet/tarr?regser=serial&amp;entry=77953184">trademark</a> ... <em>something</em> regarding Bungie's first FPS <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/marathon">Marathon</a></em>, and a filing for the name "<a href="http://tarr.uspto.gov/servlet/tarr?regser=serial&amp;entry=77950813">Bungie Aerospace</a>," we're not exactly sure what to make of whatever it is that's going on over at the house that birthed Master Chief. Both filings, spotted by <a href="http://supererogatory.tumblr.com/">Superannuation</a>, represent still unknown plans for the studio. And aside from the logo you see above, we know very, very little about either.<br />
<br />
As for the <em>Marathon</em> trademark, it could very well just be an update to an existing filing. The inclusion of references to several <a href="http://tess2.uspto.gov/bin/showfield?f=doc&amp;state=4009:pdo2rc.2.1">past</a> <a href="http://tess2.uspto.gov/bin/showfield?f=doc&amp;state=4009:pdo2rc.3.1">Bungie</a> <a href="http://tess2.uspto.gov/bin/showfield?f=doc&amp;state=4009:pdo2rc.4.1">logos</a> in the Bungie Aerospace filing, however, suggests a possible rebranding of the studio -- something we wouldn't be particularly surprised with considering the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/05/its-official-bungie-branches-off-from-microsoft/">break with Microsoft</a> way back in 2007, not to mention the fact that this fall's <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/halo-reach">Halo: Reach</a></em> marks the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/24/bungie-says-halo-reach-is-its-last-halo-game-working-on-new-ip/">last </a><em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/24/bungie-says-halo-reach-is-its-last-halo-game-working-on-new-ip/">Halo</a></em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/24/bungie-says-halo-reach-is-its-last-halo-game-working-on-new-ip/"> game</a> from the studio before Microsoft's 343 Studios fully absorbs the IP.<br />
<br />
Oh, and no, Bungie won't be joining the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/richard-garriott">Richard Garriott</a>s and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/john-carmack">John Carmack</a>s of the world in heading into outer space, as both trademark filings fall under the usual USPTO video game classification. A Bungie representative told Joystiq "No comment" when asked about the listings, but for now you're free to speculate along with us to your heart's content.<br />

Ahh yes, another year, another <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/quakecon">QuakeCon</a>. The annual mecca for all things id Software (and now <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/24/bethesda-parent-company-buys-id-software/">all things Bethesda Softworks</a>, as well) will be returning to Texas this year on August 12-15, presumably with the usual three-plus hours of John Carmack keynote in tow (he goes on and on because <em>he loves</em>!). <br />
<br />
As usual, the goings-on will be free, with the 72 hours of pure, unfiltered nerddom sponsored by parent company Zenimax Media (alright, alright -- it's <em>very likely</em> that the Bawls energy drink company is putting up some money as well). Little is known about the actual events of the show this year outside of the aforementioned cursory details, though, yes, the traditional event-wide network will again be available for attendees who bring PC rigs. That means order the purple neon light for your PC <em>today</em>, friends, not tomorrow.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/03/06/quakecon-2010-announced-for-august/">QuakeCon 2010 announced for August</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 06 Mar 2010 00:15:00 EST. This year's Game Developers Choice Awards will <a href="http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/2010-game-developers-choice-awards-to-honor-john-carmack-of-id-software-with-lifetime-achievement-award-event-to-be-hosted-by-seminal-game-designer-warren-spector-84945937.html">honor</a> id Software's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/john-carmack">John Carmack</a> with the Lifetime Achievement Award. Although certainly well deserved for his (continuing) contributions to the technical side of the industry, it's got to be weird to receive such an honor at the cusp of turning 40. We certainly hope Carmack still has plenty of years in the industry ahead of him. Former winners of the award include Sid Meier, Shigeru Miyamoto and Will Wright ... which got us wondering: could Carmack (or any of the above!) grab another Lifetime Achievement Award in the actual twilight of their career or does a single award preclude you from future awards, regardless of the achievement? <br />
<br />
Hosting the GDCA's this year is <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/warren-spector">Warren Spector</a>, who'd better be on his game following <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/25/gdc09-joystiq-live-at-the-igf-and-gdca-awards/">Tim Schafer's stellar performance</a> as emcee last year. Spector is currently working on the (<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/02/18/disney-wont-rule-out-epic-mickey-on-360-ps3/">currently</a>) Wii-exclusive <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Disney-Epic-Mickey|Epic-Mickey/">Disney Epic Mickey</a></em>, but is best known for his work on <em>Deus Ex</em>. The award ceremony will take place on Thursday, March 11, during GDC 2010 in San Francisco.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/02/22/game-developers-choice-awards-shooting-john-carmack-a-lifetime-a/">Game Developers Choice Awards shooting John Carmack a Lifetime Achievement Award, Warren Spector hosting</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 22 Feb 2010 14:31:00 EST. Six months after the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/24/bethesda-parent-company-buys-id-software/">acquisition deal</a> that brought id Software under the wing of Bethesda parent-company ZeniMax, id Software co-founder John Carmack <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/25/interview-ids-john-carmack-and-zenimax-ceo-on-the-acquisition/">has again</a> weighed in on the move and why he feels it made sense for the studio. Speaking with <a href="http://www.edge-online.com/news/id-zenimax-merger-has-%E2%80%9Cworked-out-really-well%E2%80%9D">Edge Online</a>, Carmack cited a waning interest from publishing partners -- specifically, Activision's decision to focus on internal development -- as a major contributing factor in the sale of the nearly 20-year-old company.<br />
<br />
When the deal was first announced, games media focused on the sale of a long-time independent developer; however, id president Todd Hollenshead views the situation from a different angle. "I think it's just as true that we acquired an internal publishing capacity," he said. According to Hollenshead, ZeniMax values development "for its own sake," rather than "trying to put something in a box and relying on marketing for sales."<br />
<br />
In the modern games industry where "the business is so much about either having a hit or being totally irrelevant," Hollenshead says a strong publishing partner is increasingly important to the survival of a development studio. Truthfully, we're happy for id Software. If the Activision partnership had continued, it would have been just a matter of time before the house that <em>Doom </em>built was tapped for some kind of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/tony-hawk-ride">peripheral-related disaster</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/01/29/carmack-and-hollenshead-reflect-on-id-sale/">Carmack and Hollenshead reflect on id sale</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 29 Jan 2010 12:58:00 EST. id Software's John Carmack estimates that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/03/doom-classic-released-for-iphone-and-ipod-touch/">the iPhone version</a> of iconic first-person shooter <em>Doom</em> took "maybe six weeks of serious work" to come together. Borrowing time -- and an artist -- the prolific programmer managed to assemble a port that, according to a recent <a href="http://venturebeat.com/2009/11/05/hell-returns-as-id-softwares-john-carmack-builds-doom-classic-for-the-iphone/">VentureBeat</a> interview, "plays great on every iPod Touch and iPhone ever made." But what if he focused effort on the iPhone 3GS, the latest and more powerful variant of Apple's killer app-platform?<br />
<br />
"I think we could do the real Xbox <em>Doom 3</em> game on a 3GS if we targeted it exclusively," Carmack notes. "That is pushing it a bit. You could probably get that kind of visual fidelity." And here we thought portable devices were only good for recording spooky audio logs and unlocking doors within exploding barrel research laboratories.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/05/iphone-plays-doom-but-what-about-doom-3/">iPhone plays Doom, but what about Doom 3?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 05 Nov 2009 21:00:00 EST. John Carmack has been hard at work on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/28/doom-should-come-to-iphone-next-month/"><em>Doom Classic</em></a>, an official port of id Software's groundbreaking FPS for iPhone, and now he reports that it's been submitted to Apple for approval, only four months after Carmack said it would be ready. Soon - provided Apple gives the okay to a tour of Hell - we'll be swiping and tilting our way to a symphony of exploding barrels.<br />

<em>Doom Classic</em> should support wi-fi multiplayer upon its release, with Bluetooth to follow if it's not already implemented. At least, that's what Carmack said <a href="http://www.idsoftware.com/iphone-doom-classic-progress/">earlier this year</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/26/doom-classic-soon-to-hurt-us-plenty-on-iphone/">Doom Classic soon to hurt us plenty on iPhone</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 26 Oct 2009 17:00:00 EST. In addition to announcing <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/14/mac-and-linux-users-joining-quake-live-community-august-18/">support for <em>Quake Live</em> on Mac and Linux</a>, John Carmack admitted that the current ad-based model wasn't exactly working for the game. To assuage the problem, id Software will soon be offering a subscription model in addition to the free-to-play model currently in place.<br /><br />"The in-game advertising stuff has not been big business .... [it's] not going to be able to carry the project," Carmack said. Dually, he noted that while a subscription service will be offered, the game will never go exclusively "pay-to-play." According to <a href="http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/59998">Shacknews</a>, the subscription model will allow players to create and host private server matches.This all sounds good to us -- now maybe all the hardcore <em>Quake Live</em> players will play in private servers and allow us to get a single shot off.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/15/carmack-says-ad-based-model-not-working-for-quake-live/">Carmack says ad-based model not working for Quake Live</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 15 Aug 2009 18:30:00 EST. Nothing more clearly shows the new relationship forged by Zenimax Media between <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/24/bethesda-parent-company-buys-id-software/">id Software and Bethesda Softworks</a> than <a href="http://forums.quakecon.org/showthread.php?t=12783">this year's QuakeCon lineup</a>. Littered with little extras like an hour-long presentation by Bethesda's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/todd-howard">Todd Howard</a> and the first public demonstration of Splash Damage's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/brink"><em>Brink</em></a>, QuakeCon 2009 is clearly accommodating some new faces.<br /><br />That being said, id Software's John Carmack will be giving this year's keynote speech, and the event is still very much PC-centric, with Alienware, NVIDA and Ventrilo hosting a handful of events. Upcoming post-apocalyptic, <em>not-Mad Max</em> FPS <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/rage"><em>Rage</em></a> will also be getting its first public demo at the show, further asserting id Software into the event. For those of you attending, we encourage hounding Todd Howard for information on the next <em>Elder Scrolls</em> game during his Q&amp;A -- if not for us, <em>do it for the kids</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/09/quakecon-2009-detailed-first-public-demos-of-rage-and-brink/">QuakeCon 2009 detailed, first public demos of Rage and Brink</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 09 Aug 2009 21:30:00 EST. <a href="http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=220530">CVG</a> details an extensive 10-page feature on id Software's <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/rage">Rage</a> </em>in the latest issue of UK games magazine Edge. The piece includes confirmation by John Carmack that the Xbox 360 version of the game will run at a brisk 60 frames per second, but that he has found PS3 to be at a disadvantage to Microsoft's console in terms of rendering power. <span class="text_article_body">"The PS3 lags a little bit behind in terms of getting the performance out of it</span>," he said.<br /><br />As a result, Edge reports that the game runs at "just 20-30fps" on Sony's console. Carmack places the blame on the PS3's GPU -- the RSX -- saying that, "<span class="text_article_body">The rasterizer is just a little bit slower -- no two ways about that...</span><span class="text_article_body">the RSX is slower than what we have in the 360." He sees both consoles as being </span><span class="text_article_body">comparable in terms of raw processing power, however. "</span><span class="text_article_body">The CPU is about the same, but the 360 makes it easier to split things off," he told the magazine. "...that's what a lot of the work has been, splitting it all into jobs on the PS3."<br /><br />Now, before you go making a comment you can't take back, know that the Edge article <em>doesn't</em> clarify whether or not the performance of the PS3 version will be improved prior to release. It's also telling that Carmack states that the PS3 is only "a little bit slower" than 360 in his findings -- if that's the case, we can't imagine that the finished will run at fully <em>half the speed.</em><br /><br /><strong>Update: </strong><a href="http://www.edge-online.com/news/carmack-ps3-performance-lags-behind-360">Further comments</a> from the Edge piece reveal that the developer is indeed aiming for parity between all platforms. "</span>Everything is designed as a 60 hertz game. We expect this to be 60 hertz on every supported platform."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/30/edge-rage-running-at-60fps-on-360-just-20-to-30fps-on-ps3/">Edge: Rage runs at 60fps on 360, 'just 20 to 30fps' on PS3 [update]</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 30 Jul 2009 21:00:00 EST. While speaking with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/id-software">id Software</a>'s John Carmack and Escalation Studios' Tom Mustaine yesterday, we only briefly broached the subject of iPhone game pricing. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/doom-resurrection"><em>Doom Resurrection</em></a>'s lofty (by App Store standards) $10 price tag puts it in a particularly prickly situation, with Carmack telling us that "convincing people who've been spending $1 on games to spend $10 is a real problem." We can imagine! <br /><br />He's not entirely without hope, however, as he looks at <em>Resurrection</em> as a value proposition, trading higher production values for higher costs. In fact, Carmack's hoping to set a precedent with <em>DR</em> that will allow for "bigger iPhone games" in the future -- something he says he'd like to see a lot more of. "There's only so much you can do with games that cost two or three dollars -- there's only so much production value you can put into that," he told us. The clear answer: Make <em>Doom</em>-based alien flatulence apps.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/30/carmack-hopes-doom-will-kick-off-bigger-iphone-games-in-future/">Carmack hopes Doom will kick off 'bigger' iPhone games in future</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 30 Jun 2009 16:40:00 EST. Though he didn't exactly spell out what it's going to be or when it's going to be hitting digital shelves, id Software's John Carmack told us his newest iPhone game will be getting DLC. He let slip yesterday morning during an interview about recently released <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/doom-resurrection"><em>Doom Resurrection</em></a> that the game would be getting DLC "sometime soon" -- downloadable content just became an option for iPhone games, with the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/hub/iphone-os-30">launch of OS 3.0</a>. <br /><br />When we pressed him on whether we'd see downloadable <em>anything</em> for the upcoming flood of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/25/expect-an-id-iphone-game-every-two-to-three-months-for-the-next/">id Software games coming to the iPhone</a>, he kept his cards a bit closer to his chest, saying it's technically "possible" but nothing's set in stone yet. He also revealed that <em>Resurrection</em> will be getting multiplayer add-ons in the upcoming weeks, so for those of you who already took the $10 plunge, you may want to ask your best buddy to do so as well. <br /><br /><strong>Update:</strong> We got some clarification on the DLC from id Software's John Carmack just now, saying, "There won't be any DLC until we have moved the projects to requiring 3.0, and we aren't sure exactly when that will be. Pretty much all of the titles are being set up for DLC in the future. We are prepping the "Spear of Destiny" levels for <em>Wolfenstein 3D</em> classic, and all the various classic games have sequels and mission packs that we can offer. For <em>Resurrection</em>, new content will have to be created from scratch. I expect we will know within a few weeks if the reception to the game is good enough to justify it." <br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/doom-resurrection/">Doom Resurrection</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/doom-resurrection/#2129799"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/07/doomresurrectionmainscreen580px_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/doom-resurrection/#2114160"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/06/doomr_8_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/doom-resurrection/#2114132"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/06/doomr_2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/doom-resurrection/#2114131"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/06/doomr_5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/doom-resurrection/#2114130"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/06/doomr_4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/30/doom-resurrection-getting-dlc-possible-for-other-id-titles/">Doom Resurrection getting DLC, 'possible' for other id titles [update]</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 30 Jun 2009 10:45:00 EST. We already knew that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/24/bethesda-parent-company-buys-id-software/">recently bought by Bethesda</a> company id Software are looking at a hefty lineup of upcoming iPhone games, but after speaking with company co-founder John Carmack this morning, we found out a little bit more about the potential for more classic reboots, like <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/doom-resurrection"><em>Doom Resurrection</em></a>, in the future. "It really depends on how this one is received by consumers before we can make any plans, but I'm very interested in the prospect," Carmack told Joystiq.<br /><br />Apparently, he's most interested in seeing this treatment for <em>Quake</em>, though he also noted that <em>Quake 3 Arena</em> is still "possible" on Apple's handheld. Why not <em>Quake Live</em> on Apple's OS X, Mr. Carmack? Unfortunately, we ran out of time before we could ask. It is high on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/25/carmack-quake-live-on-mac-linux-high-on-my-priority-list/">his "high priority" list</a> though, right? So we've got something then? John? Speaking with id Software's John Carmack earlier today, we got the sense that the man has a hunk of burnin' love for Apple's iPhone. Aside from bringing a <em>metric ton</em> of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/25/expect-an-id-iphone-game-every-two-to-three-months-for-the-next/">classic id titles to the device</a>, the legendary developer let us know that the Wii game once being talked about around the hallowed halls at the company is what eventually became <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Doom-Resurrection"><em>Doom Resurrection</em></a>. <br /><br />"We like to think of it as a more guided experience than <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/12/doom-resurrection-is-an-on-rails-shooter/">an on-rails game</a>," Carmack told Joystiq this morning, referring to the game's character control system. "Originally, I was pitched the title as a Wii game -- I dropped some <a href="http://nintendo.joystiq.com/2009/02/24/john-carmack-in-talks-to-make-exclusive-wii-game">hints about this earlier in the year</a> but nothing substantial, in case the game didn't work out or it wasn't fun or something like that," he continued. Considering the $9.99 asking price of <em>Resurrection</em> versus the $50 a Wii title could have cost, we (and our wallets) are more than happy with Mr. Carmack's choice.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/doom-resurrection/">Doom Resurrection</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/doom-resurrection/#2129799"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/07/doomresurrectionmainscreen580px_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/doom-resurrection/#2114160"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/06/doomr_8_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/doom-resurrection/#2114132"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/06/doomr_2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/doom-resurrection/#2114131"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/06/doomr_5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/doom-resurrection/#2114130"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/06/doomr_4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/29/doom-resurrection-started-life-on-the-wii/">Doom Resurrection started life on the Wii</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 29 Jun 2009 13:55:00 EST. When Raven Software's long-in-development <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Wolfenstein/">Wolfenstein</a></em> (remember when it was an Xbox 360 timed exclusive back in 2005?) finally hits store shelves this August, it'll mark the end of an era ...<br /><br />... oh no! Not of <em>Wolfenstein</em> games - there are plenty more of those coming - but of outside developers working on id Software's hallowed franchises. John Carmack <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/25/interview-ids-john-carmack-and-zenimax-ceo-on-the-acquisition/">told Joystiq today</a> that bringing external development back in-house at id is "exactly what's going to be happening." Carmack says that while id's had some hits (<em>Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory </em>springs to mind) and some misses (<em>Enemy Territory: Quake Wars springs to mind</em>) the externally developed titles haven't "had the same record that our internally developed titles have." We'd have to agree with him there.<br /><br />With the lead team cranking on <em>Rage</em> for EA Partners, they created a second development team to work on <em>Doom 4</em>, with a still-formative third team currently toiling away on <em>Quake Live</em>. "We'll have three teams," Carmack told us. "We'll have <em>Wolfenstein</em>, <em>Doom</em>, <em>Quake</em>, and <em>Rage</em> and one of them will be taking a vacation each cycle and that will depend on what we want to be doing each time." So don't worry, you'll have plenty of all of the above to go around.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/25/id-software-bringing-external-development-back-in-house/">id Software bringing external development back in-house</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 25 Jun 2009 19:00:00 EST. In an <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/25/interview-ids-john-carmack-and-zenimax-ceo-on-the-acquisition/">interview</a> with Joystiq, id's John Carmack stated that he is "pretty passionate about the benefits of the iPhone" and plans to continue supporting the platform. "I've got a slate of iPhone titles, I expect to have an iPhone release every two or three months for the next year," said Carmack, noting that id will likely continue to plow through its classic titles (hope you like <em>Doom</em>!) before moving on to titles like <em>Doom RPG</em> and <em>Wolfenstein RPG</em> and eventually something based on id's upcoming title <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/rage"><em>Rage</em></a>.<br /><br />Carmack stated that iPhone projects don't require much of id's focus, saying, "These are things that get a few people put on them for a little while, are fun for everybody involved."<br /><br />"So far it looks like they're making pretty good money," said Carmack, "but they're not the blockbuster titles that they go do $100 million dollars."<br /><br />Read the entire interview with John Carmack and Zenimax CEO Robert Altman right <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/25/interview-ids-john-carmack-and-zenimax-ceo-on-the-acquisition/">here</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/25/expect-an-id-iphone-game-every-two-to-three-months-for-the-next/">Expect an id iPhone game 'every two to three months for the next year'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 25 Jun 2009 18:15:00 EST. Luminary <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/shigeru-miyamoto">Shigeru Miyamoto</a> hasn't lost his shimmer in the eyes of game developers, with a recent industry poll finding the Nintendo icon to be without equal. The survey, commissioned by organizers of next month's <a href="http://www.developconference.com/">Develop Conference</a>, asked 9,000 devs to name their game development hero, with nearly a third of respondents pointing to Miyamoto as the man with the plan. <br /><br />The popularity contest also named id Software's John Carmack as the next most idealized developer, followed by Maxis and now <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/stupid-fun-club/">Stupid Fun Club</a> brainpan Will Wright. The top ten list of industry highlights was rounded out by <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/braid">Braid</a></em> dev Jonathan Blow, who's likely too busy rewinding time (to see if he can somehow land higher on the ballot) to care.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/15/survey-developers-still-worship-miyamoto-blow-too/">Survey: Developers still worship Miyamoto, Blow too</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 15 Jun 2009 11:15:00 EST. If you read the name of John Carmack's latest project yesterday, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/10/id-brings-all-new-doom-resurrection-to-the-iphone-next-week/"><em>Doom Resurrection</em></a>, you likely assumed you'd spend the duration of the upcoming iPhone game shooting evil shit to death. You'd be correct. But today, IGN's reporting that you won't have to worry about what your feet are doing while you're battling demons.<br /><br />In this on-rails shooter, you'll apparently twist and tilt the phone to aim and tap the screen to fire. We don't know about you, but we're not bothered about the loss of mobility: As <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/House-of-the-Dead-Overkill/">House of the Dead: Overkill</a></em> recently taught us, we can still have a great time riding the rails.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/12/doom-resurrection-is-an-on-rails-shooter/">Doom Resurrection is an on-rails shooter</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 12 Jun 2009 00:45:00 EST. Sure, the all-new iPhone 3G S was shown off to throngs of drooling consumers on Monday - wowing the geek-set with its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/10/iphone-3g-s-supports-opengl-es-2-0-but-3g-only-supports-1-1/">newfound OpenGL ES 2.0 support</a> (your lousy iPhone 3G only supports OpenGL ES 1.1!) - but don't expect id Software's just announced title, <em>Doom Resurrection</em>, to be a 3G S-exclusive. Id's John Carmack <a href="http://venturebeat.com/2009/06/10/next-generation-iphone-game-doom-resurrection-debuting-next-week/">told VentureBeat </a>that he's "happy with the faster iPhone 3G S" but "he is also focused on making sure that his games run on the widest number of iPhones." Translation: <em>Doom Resurrection</em> won't be 3G S-exclusive. (Speculation: id could make two versions of <em>Resurrection</em>: one 2.0-compatible and another 1.1-compatible). <br /><br />But, where were we ... oh, yes! <em>Doom Resurrection</em>! This sure sounds like the "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/28/carmack-planning-iphone-graphical-tour-de-force/">graphical tour de force</a>" he promised to bring to the iPhone. Carmack &amp; Co were able to reuse much of <em>DOOM 3's</em> assets (downsized for the iPhone's screen resolution, of course) and get the engine running at 30 frames per second on the latest iPod Touch. Wrapped around that fancy tech, they've built "eight full levels and about five hours of game play" - the future iPhone 3.0 OS release will also enable "peer-to-peer cooperative multiplayer" for some on-the-go Deathmatch.<br /><br />One of the most notable takeaways from VB's interview: Carmack's assertion that the iPhone is "a real game platform, not a tiny little toy." He explains that "the iPhone should be better in performance than the Nintendo DS and the PlayStation Portable" in raw horsepower "but the truth is you can't exploit it all because of software inefficiencies." We imagine the newly Open GL ES 2.0-compliant iPhones (gallery below) will ameliorate much of Mr. Carmack's concerns. In the interim, check out how far he's gotten on today's hardware when <em>Doom Resurrection</em> shoots the AppStore in the face next week. <br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/iphone-3g-s/">iPhone 3G S</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/iphone-3g-s/#2074814"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/06/iphone3gs_voice-1024_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/iphone-3g-s/#2074813"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/06/iphone3gs_video-1024_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/iphone-3g-s/#2074812"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/06/iphone3gs_mailwide-1024_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/iphone-3g-s/#2074811"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/06/iphone3gs_front-1024_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/iphone-3g-s/#2074810"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/06/iphone3gs_compass-1024_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/10/id-brings-all-new-doom-resurrection-to-the-iphone-next-week/">id brings all-new Doom Resurrection to the iPhone 'next week'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 10 Jun 2009 20:15:00 EST. We wish all devs were as forthcoming as id's John Carmack. His update on the status of the iPhone<em> </em>version of <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Doom/">Doom</a> </em>(or <em>Doom Classic</em>, as he's calling it) is exhaustive, but it's also rich with information and insight into porting an old-school classic onto new tech ... and doing it well.<br /><br />We've dug up a few nuggets for you, like the fact that Carmack says he should be able to submit the game to the App Store by next month and that the game will use the original <em>Doom </em>sprites, but you should really take a few minutes to read the <a href="http://www.idsoftware.com/iphone-doom-classic-progress/">whole thing</a>, it's really interesting stuff.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/58823">Shacknews</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/28/doom-should-come-to-iphone-next-month/">Doom should come to iPhone next month</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 28 May 2009 20:00:00 EST. Unfortunately, things have conspired against us being out early on the platform. I had a plan for an aggressive, iPhone specific project that we actually started putting some internal resources on, but the programmer tasked with it didn't work out and was let go. In an odd coincidence, an outside development team came to us with a proposal, and we decided to have them work on the iPhone project. We should be announcing this project soon, and it is cool.<br /><br />After a little looking around, I found <em>Wolf3D Redux</em> at <a href="http://wolf3dredux.sourceforge.net/">http://wolf3dredux.sourceforge.net/</a>. The game was still fun to play after all these years, and I began to think that it might be worthwhile to actually make a product out of <em>Wolfenstein</em> on the iPhone. The simple episodic nature of the game would make it easy to split up into a $0.99 version with just the first episode. I was getting a little ahead of myself without a fun-to-play demonstration of feasibility on the iPhone, but the idea of moving the entire line of classic Id titles over -- <em>Wolf, Doom, Quake, Quake 2,</em> and <em>Quake Arena,</em> was starting to sound like a real good idea.<small><em><br /></em></small><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/24/carmack-releases-open-source-wolfenstein-for-iphone/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Carmack releases open source Wolfenstein for iPhone</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/24/carmack-releases-open-source-wolfenstein-for-iphone/">Carmack releases open source Wolfenstein for iPhone</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 24 Mar 2009 13:26:00 EST. While id Software <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/14/electronic-arts-and-id-software-form-partnership/">recently partnered with</a> EA's increasingly popular publishing imprint EA Partners for the upcoming <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Rage/">Rage</a></em>, John Carmack said that no such deal has been reached for the studio's other major project, the recently announced <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Doom-4/">Doom 4</a></em>. "Nobody's signed <em>Doom</em> yet," Carmack told Joystiq, "so <em>Doom 4</em> will be the same process of going out and bringing [publishers] around." By that point, id will have "some scope of how the dealings of EA will have gone" and they'll "be able to get a better sense of how we think their doing, holding up their side of the bargain."<br /><br />And when will that be? "We're taking <em>Doom</em> like we did with <em>Rage</em>, quite a way on our internal development funds," Carmack revealed. "It winds up getting us a better deal with the publishers who sign it but we do expect to be signing <em>Doom</em> deals later this year." So, in other words, after beating out other publishers on paper - including Activision, THQ, and Sega - to get the publishing rights for <em>Rage</em>, it's up to EA Partners to actually perform if they want a slice of that <em>Doom 4</em> pie. With games like <em>Rock Band</em>, <em>Rock Band 2</em>, <em>Left 4 Dead</em>, <em>Orange Box</em>, <em>Crysis</em>, and unreleased games like <em>Br&uuml;tal Legend</em>, and the as-yet-unnamed <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/14/ea-to-publish-new-epic-ip/">Epic / People Can Fly</a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/14/ea-publishing-new-action-horror-franchise-from-suda51-shinji/">Shinji Mikami / Suda51</a> games we think EA aims to please.<br /><br />Check back later today for our full interview with id's John Carmack and Marty Stratton.<br /><br />
