Did you know that? How do we keep letting this junk get away with that?

Well, here's an idea: turn that lazy junk into working video game hardware. Jason Torchinsky did just that, using an old power seat controller from an Oldsmobile to play some Ms. Pac-Man. You can check out the whole how-to over on Jalopnik - or, if you're anything like us, you can just call your dad, tell him to come over and make him do it.
Today's old car junk is tomorrow's video game controller originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 26 Jun 2012 04:00:00 EST. After daily testing on SC5, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 and Mortal Kombat, the Soul Edition not only met my expectations, but exceeded them, as you can tell from the review video above.

The company's Tournament Edition sticks have always been excellent pieces of hardware, and the Soul Edition is no exception. It's solidly constructed from arcade-quality parts and is heavy enough to stay in place, regardless of whether you fight on a table-top or your lap. The stick's striking motif and subtle design elements set it apart from every other mass-produced arcade stick on the market; if you want to stand out at your local Ranking Battles without incurring the cost of a custom-made stick, you'd be hard pressed to find a piece of fighting tech that's this unique, right out of the box.
Video review: Mad Catz Arcade FightStick Soul Edition originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 03 Feb 2012 13:30:00 EST.
You see that video up there? That was taken at Arcade UFO in Austin, TX, during its 2011 fall Ranking Battle tournament series. The fight was between me and the arcade's owner, Ryan Harvey, and took place on a custom built Mortal Kombat arcade cabinet, one of the few in existence at the time. I'm the guy playing Kitana, and if you watch the whole thing, you'll see that I'm also the guy who loses.

That's all right though, because I should have lost that fight. Fubarduck (as Ryan is known in the fighting game community) is an exceptional fighting-game player, as his multiple Top-8 finishes at EVO will attest, and his combo execution was far more solid than what I was laying down with Kitana. Ryan had won, I had learned something about fighting Johnny Cage, and we all moved on. Right?

Well, in a perfect world yes, but unfortunately we live in a world where this fight is available on YouTube. By now I've watched it dozens of times, and at this point I can pinpoint every single mistake I made over the course of those matches. Most of them were strategic mistakes, granted, but there were also execution errors: Because the arcade parts Ryan uses in his cabinets are far superior to the parts in the $35 fight stick I practice with at home, I was at a disadvantage.

High quality joysticks and buttons are light, accurate and require very little manual force to move. Cheaply made parts, on the other hand, are stiff and less responsive, and as such require a lot more effort. My hands, being acclimated to a sub-standard stick, were expecting to work a lot harder than they needed to. I was forward-jumping instead of dashing, doing directional normals instead of neutral normals ... The whole fight was a mess, looking back.

It was a good fight, though, because it made me realize how important it is to own a proper fight stick once you get serious about competitive fighting games. After all, a craftsman's tools are as important as the skill he has acquired, as far as the final result is concerned. To that end, I'm going to build my own, custom fight stick, and you're coming along for the ride.
Continue reading The Joystiq Joystick, chapter 1: Parts

The Joystiq Joystick, chapter 1: Parts originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 10 Jan 2012 16:00:00 EST. You're the target audience for the utterly implausible "Hoon vs. Neo Legend" arcade stick, designed by Hoon, a Parisian jewelry and leather clothing company, in collaboration with the "arcade shop" Neo Legend. The stick is built by hand out of "lacquered oak wood and corners cased in ostrich leather" and contains hardware made by trusted Japanese arcade parts company Sanwa Denshi. It's designed for PS3, Xbox 360 and PC.

The sticks will be available both from the Neo Legend store and from Hoon's website on February 18. If you have so much money that you can confidently buy electronics from a fashion designer without knowing the price, Hoon is currently accepting pre-orders by email request. And for the rest of you, we've inquired as to the price -- and we'll be sure to share the shocking news when it comes in.

Gallery: Hoon Neo Legend joystick (PC, Xbox 360, PS3)

It has now announced a partnership with THQ to produce ... WWE-branded FightSticks and FightPads, for the upcoming WWE All Stars game. All Stars is supposed to be more arcade-like and feature "combination sequences" (according to its original announcement), so ... no, this just isn't going to make sense no matter how hard we try.

Mad Catz intends to produce the accessories for PS3, Xbox 360, and Wii, which means that if you missed out on the Tatsunoko vs. Capcom FightStick, you'll have another chance to get a Wii arcade stick, albeit one with pictures of wrasslers all over it. Mad Catz has declined to offer images or specific details for the devices, so we're just going to have to dream for now.
Mad Catz creating FightSticks and FightPads for WWE All Stars originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 18 Oct 2010 15:40:00 EST. The peripheral company is producing another run of the ¥30,000 ($344) Twin Stick EX, now bearing the Virtual-On Force logo and targeted at a winter release to coincide with that game.

The current iteration of the stick is being sold only through preorders on Hori's website between now and July 20, but we suspect a small number will find their way to importers, for those of you who started saving up the last time these sticks were announced and have only now managed to get enough money together.
Hori's Twin Stick EX controller returns for Virtual-On Force originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 07 Jul 2010 10:30:00 EST. Do you want a Mad Catz Tournament Edition FightStick, but ... bluer? Mad Catz and Aksys have just announced a BlazBlue: Continuum Shift FightStick, featuring imagery from the upcoming BlazBlue sequel. Like the latest revision of the Super Street Fighter IV stick, this controller features genuine Sanwa parts and internal storage for the 13-foot cable.

Only 3,000 sticks will be produced: 1,500 each for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The only place you'll be able to get one is through Aksys's online store. Pre-orders will ship in June for $199.99. With those limited quantities, if you want one, you should probably look into that soon. We're holding out for a BlayzBloo DS arcade stick.

Daigo "The Beast" Umehara, last seen battling US champ Justin Wong at Capcom's Fight Club, is considered one of the best Street Fighter players in the world. He'll now use and promote Mad Catz's arcade sticks at tournaments. That's great for him and all, but the partnership benefits us as well: in addition to acting as a pitchman, Umehara will offer his considerable expertise to Mad Catz during the design process on future joysticks. Usually, we'd roll our eyes at a "pro gamer" attaching his name to peripherals, but there's a promise of really nice arcade sticks here!
The Real Arcade Pro Premium VLX series will be released in Japan this March in Xbox 360 and PS3 versions, for ¥30,000 ($330) -- a price that ensures that it's for fighting game nerds only.

But what do said nerds get for their money, besides obvious proof that they've spent a lot? An enormous controller patterned after the control panel in Taito's Vewlix arcade cabinet -- the cabinet used for Street Fighter IV machines. It comes equipped with arcade-standard Sanwa buttons and joystick, and features a flip-up panel for wiring access and extra button storage (in case you want to remove some to create an authentic button layout for a particular game).

Importer Play-Asia will carry both versions of the VLX, but currently has no pricing information. At its booth in the Tokyo Game Show shopping area, accessories maker Hori handed out a pamphlet introducing its new Real Arcade Pro V and other joysticks.

Few details are included in the pamphlet: we know it weighs 3 kilograms and features a Sanwa JLF joystick and Hori buttons, and that it should be in Japanese stores sometime this winter. The mock-up image even uses Roman numerals for the button labels instead of anything that would identify the platform.
In addition, new mid-range sticks for PS3 and 360 are due out this winter for 5,500 and 6,980, respectively -- a price discrepancy that suggests that wireless technology is involved, based on the historical evidence of Rock Band guitars. See all three sticks after the break, along with some gigantic Taito-licensed stick that was on display at the Hori booth.
Continue reading TGS 2009: The next generation of Real Arcade Pro joysticks

TGS 2009: The next generation of Real Arcade Pro joysticks originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 26 Sep 2009 11:30:00 EST. Any alley brawler worth his or her salt knows that when it comes to succeeding at Street Fighter IV, a standard controller doesn't really cut it. You can try and hold out on purchasing a custom-tailored joystick, but consider yourself warned: Capcom and Mad Catz are trying very, very hard to break your spirit. Earlier today, the peripheral manufacturer announced "Round 2" of its line of FightPads and a brand new FightStick, all of which will be dropping later this fall.

At $149.99, you'd have to be a fighting game fanatic to shell out for the Tournament Edition FightStick -- though that black and white motif is strangely alluring. You're more likely to spring for the $39.99 FightPads, each of which feature a design based on one of the game's characters. We'd be remiss if we didn't point out that the placement of the Start and Select buttons on the Crimson Viper FightPad is, well ... unfortunate.

Mad Catz kicks off Round 2 of Street Fighter IV peripherals originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 22 Sep 2009 18:59:00 EST. The statement confirms that the "sticky joystick" issue is related to a metal washer moving out of place. While Verrey says that the issue is simple to fix, he suggests contacting Mad Catz for repairs to avoid voiding the warranty.

Verrey told 1UP that the number of complaints received by Mad Catz numbered "well under 50," and that the issue has "blown out of proportion." When asked about the connection between the FightStick issue and a recent drop in Mad Catz's stock price, Verrey responded that "It is my personal belief that the notion that this issue (Which has only surfaced in the last 48 hours or so) has in any way affected our company's stock price is slightly fanciful to say the least." We also doubt that a tiny, angry contingent of the Street Fighter community somehow performed the Guile handcuffs on Mad Catz's stock.

Gallery: Mad Catz Street Fighter IV controllers

Mad Catz: 'well under 50' complaints about FightSticks originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 19 Feb 2009 14:10:00 EST. Here's an alternative to those Mad Catz pads for fighting game fans. The XCM Dominator Joystick for PS3 is due for release sometime this week, according to Engadget. It's a stylish looking pad with some common tricks such as Rapid Fire and Turbo Modes, but it also has four memory buttons which can each be programmed to execute combos of up to 20 moves. It also doubles as a nightlight. The Dominator is $89.99 and is available for pre-order here.

[Via Engadget]
XCM Dominator PS3 joystick out this week originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 19 Jan 2009 07:30:00 EST. We fully expected Japanese accessory company Hori to release a version of their Fighting Stick Wii with Tatsunoko vs. Capcom art. They frequently release branded versions of their less expensive (as in, not Real Arcade Pro) sticks to coincide with new fighting games. But another company somehow got the deal with Capcom, and plans to release Classic Controller-compatible sticks both with and without Tatsunoko artwork this year.

Exar, the company responsible for the Wii Neo Geo Stick 2, will release the EXARSTICK on November 27 for 5229 yen ($54) and the TATSUNOKO VS. CAPCOM STICK on December 11 for 6279 yen ($65). The only differences between the two seem to be cosmetic: in addition to the obvious artwork differences, the buttons and outer casing on the Tatsunoko stick are different colors than those in the plain stick, which is Wii white and blue with Super Famicom-color buttons.

We don't know how this compares to the Fighting Stick in terms of quality -- at these prices, we don't expect either to use genuine arcade parts -- but at least it looks like something that needs to be sitting on our coffee table right now.

Tatsunoko vs. Capcom arcade stick on the way, but not from Hori originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 24 Oct 2008 10:46:00 EST. But the real attraction here is the ability to play Virtual Console games on a real arcade cabinet, with real arcade controls.

Well, sort of real arcade controls. Instead of the high-quality Sanwa or Seimitsu buttons and joysticks that arcade stick nerds prefer, Dream Arcades uses cheaper knockoffs of Happ parts, which are already considered inferior. Most people won't care, but if you're dropping $1200+ on one of these, you might want to look into some replacement parts.

[Via GoNintendo]
The most unwieldy Wii arcade stick ever originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 20 Jun 2008 08:45:00 EST.
As much as we'd love to import one of these gorgeous arcade sticks -- modeled after the original Neo Geo AES arcade stick -- $59.90, not including steep shipping fees for the 4+ lb. controller, is just too rich for our blood, especially since it's only compatible with a limited selection of Wii games. For Virtual Console games, however, this would be the business.

For now, we'll just have to live through David Spreckley who bought one of these sticks from an Akihabara shop and posted photos of the unboxed product online to torment jealous gamers. Down, Down Forward, Forward + Punch past the post break for another glamour shot of the Neo Geo Stick 2.
Continue reading This is what the Neo Geo Stick 2 looks like

This is what the Neo Geo Stick 2 looks like originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 20 May 2008 11:00:00 EST. CYBER Gadget has made significant technological strides in the field of unnecessary Wii accessories, combining two of the least helpful accessories in one package. The CYBER Smash Grip combines a Wiimote controller grip thing with a D-pad thumbstick cover, and adds (as a bonus!) a thing that makes the A button stick out more for some reason.

If we were going to get some kind of controller for, uh, Smashing, we're pretty sure we'd go ahead and spend the extra for a Classic Controller instead of dropping 1,280 yen ($12.75) for this thing. Not that this thing is being marketed with Brawl in mind or anything. "Smash Grip" is just a catchy name, right?

[Via GAME Watch]
Two useless accessories become one originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 27 Mar 2008 12:45:00 EST.
Much to our delight, SNK's Neo Geo Stick 2 for the Wii will retain that classic black look of the original and PS2 controllers, foregoing the predictable white case that Hori opted for. Jeux France has uncovered several photos of the arcade stick, unboxed and beside its packaging, and it is gorgeous. Leaving one of these displayed on your coffee table sends a clear message to your visitors: "This guy is serious business." Just make sure not to break up that illusion by letting them see your Chewbacca bedsheets -- you don't want people to think that the business you're serious about is living like a twelve-year-old.

Back on topic, the Neo Geo Stick 2 supports both Wii games and Virtual Console titles. Retailers in Japan won't begin selling the arcade controller until April 10th, but you can preorder one now from import shop Play Asia for as cheap as $59.90. Step past the break for more photos from SNK's product page.
Continue reading Always bet on black: Neo Geo Stick 2

Always bet on black: Neo Geo Stick 2 originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 28 Feb 2008 13:30:00 EST. Both Amazon.jp and Japanese retailer Rakuten have posted product pages for a Wii version of the Neo Geo Stick 2, an arcade-style, ball-top controller previously put together by SNK-Playmore and Sega Logistics for the PS2.

If it's anything like the PS2 remake of the original Neo Geo Stick (see above image), this new edition will also have non-analog L and R buttons hugging its four primary convex buttons like a set of parentheses. Hopefully, the Wii version will keep that classy black color; it would be a travesty if it didn't!

The Neo Geo Stick 2 is scheduled to arrive in Japan this April 10th, selling for ¥5,040 (approximately $47). According to Rakuten, the controller will support both Wii games and Virtual Console titles. Despite Hori's reputation for producing quality arcade joysticks for consoles, its $50 Fighting Stick Wii is just too expensive for many gamers. We made a quick trip down to our BB to confirm the discount pricing and found the Arcade Stick clearanced to $14.99. Still not a bad deal seeing that the peripheral retails for $40 and it comes bundled with three XBLA games (Frogger, Timepilot and AstroPop). Your mileage may very, but if you've been somewhat interested in this peripheral or the Arcade games, then make your way to Best Buy and shop the clearance aisle. Saving cash, it's the fanboy way.

[Thanks, Bryan Thumme]
Mad Catz joystick clearance priced at Best Buy originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 10 Nov 2007 10:15:00 EST.
Japanese site Game Watch got a hold of Hori's Fighting Stick Wii, posting photos of the arcade controller out of its box and in use at their office. They might as well have put up pictures of themselves caressing its white casing, smirking at the camera with a "you wish your life was as good as ours" look, shirt half unbuttoned to suggest the night ahead, for all the jealousy they've aroused in us. Quarter circle forward past the post break break to see a couple of those images.

The Wii remote dangling off of the arcade stick, unfortunately, isn't very attractive. We prefer not having to hook anything on for wireless controls, but we wouldn't have minded the Classic-Controller-styled setup if there was at least a way to unobtrusively attach the remote; it's not like there isn't any room inside the arcade stick's mostly empty shell.
Continue reading Hori Fighting Stick, unboxed and in the nude

Hori Fighting Stick, unboxed and in the nude originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 05 Sep 2007 12:45:00 EST. Hori's official Fighting Stick Wii product page is up, and with it are new pictures for us to stare at dreamily, imagining Hadoukens and Shoryukens pulled off with clicky aplomb. It's official: this thing is delicious. Deliciously, the page confirms it to be functionally interchangeable with the Classic Controller, meaning that VC games and Smash Bros. are a go.

Like the Classic Controller, this joystick requires the Wiimote to be connected. But most of us are used to being semi-tethered to our Wiimotes by now. Unlike the now-boring Classic Controller, the Fighting Stick Wii has an individual turbo switch for each button, which enables super-Takahashi Meijin button pressing at 20 times per second.
Hori Fighting Stick replaces the Classic Controller in our hearts originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 23 Aug 2007 10:30:00 EST.
It's no Real Arcade Pro, but Hori's Fighting Stick Wii is still better than any US-marketed joystick, if previous Fighting Sticks are any indication. Wii owners, of course, will prefer this to the RAP for the simple fact that it works on the Wii. Also, as far as we can tell, it's either wireless or near-wireless. It's got the Home button on it, so it's unlikely to be a rebranded Gamecube controller. Therefore we expect that it either plugs into the Wiimote in the manner of the Classic Controller, or plugs into nothing in the manner of something awesomely convenient. (There's also the USB option, but let's not even talk about that.)

Gamestop is taking preorders for this stick in anticipation of a November 6th release, at a price of $49.99. Trust us, that's extraordinarily reasonable for an arcade stick of any quality. Surprisingly, Europe seems to be getting this peripheral before the US: Amazon.co.uk lists the item as shipping on the 17th of this month! That's in line with the estimated Japanese release date provided by Play-Asia; however, neither Amazon.co.jp nor Hori's own website make any mention of this stick.

We suppose there's Metal Slug, but it seems like a shame to have such a nice arcade stick for a system with no major fighting games (unless Guilty Gear XX Accent Core actually comes out). Not that the SNES Street Fighter II ports aren't great! It would just feel a bit weird buying a $50 joystick for $8 games.
Now we just need some fighting games originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 08 Aug 2007 10:30:00 EST. While we were (barely) bested by Sega's employee in our matches, we definitely enjoyed the hardware on which we played. The buttons and joystick have a nice, durable feel to them. The joystick has a definite tactile click to it, and it's not too loud either, which is nice. The buttons click solidly and the joystick inputs seemed spot on. We managed some nice body checks with Akira with no problem at all, and diagonal inputs were easily recognized too. The Sega rep informed us that the stick should retail for around $50 or so, which seems fairly standard. Considering the DOA4 stick is now nearly impossible to find (and damned expensive if you do), you'll definitely want to pick up the HORI stick if you're serious about your virtual fighting.
Joystiq impressions: HORI VF5 joystick for 360 originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 13 Jul 2007 21:26:00 EST. The only evidence to suggest any link between Hori's Fighting Stick and the Wii, besides its white and blue colors, are the three buttons on the top right labeled with the remote's home, plus, and minus symbols. Uh, and the parts where it says "Wii."

Though it isn't completely clear yet what purpose the top left switches serve, they're probably meant for turbo/slow/hold functions. Like Hori's fighting sticks for other consoles, this one employs the Japanese design favored by the hardcore -- convex buttons, ball top stick (Sanwa, likely), arced button placement, and what we assume to be a square gate. It might take some time for you to adjust to the layout if you're used to western setups.

Play-Asia's $52.90 import price might sound expensive, but it's indicative of Hori's reputation as a manufacturer of relatively high-quality arcade sticks. Hopefully, the Wii will actually have some fighting games that are compatible with the stick by the time its November release in Japan comes around. Check past the post break for a larger image.

Continue reading Hori brings non-wacky controller to the Wii

Hori brings non-wacky controller to the Wii originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 26 Jun 2007 11:30:00 EST. Namco Bandai has announced that it will release a special bundle for its upcoming aeronautical adventure, Ace Combat 6. The bundle will include the game, a limited edition Xbox 360 faceplate and the sweet flight stick combo seen above. The stick is manufactured by HORI, makers of the ultra-hard-to-find Dead or Alive 4 arcade stick. But how much does it cost, you say? Not $89.95! No, not $79.95. Not even $69.95! That's right, the Ace Combat 6 bundle will retail for ... $150! The bundle is expected to arrive this holiday season.
Any flight sim junkies out there willing to take the plunge?
Specifically, arcade games. Arcade fans demand faithful translations of their games, which is why we applaud Konami's effort to preserve the original aspect ratio of the arcade Contra even as we wonder how to play it. But the display is only part of the arcade experience.

Crazy arcade types tend to build custom joysticks to play their fighting games. Obviously we aren't going to do that with the DS (but if you have, let us know!), and the controls on the DS are not exactly identical to those found on your average arcade cabinet. But do they get the job done for most arcade games? The touch screen can simulate dial and trackball controllers okay, but what about a joystick?

We want to hear your two tokens. Are there any classic arcade games that you'd like to see on the DS, other than the obvious Punch-Out!!? And would a D-pad and four face buttons compromise the experience?
DS Daily: Arcade on the go originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 29 Mar 2007 09:00:00 EST. The game stick delivers that authentic experience, along with a few included games. The only problem gamers may have is remembering what it's like to use a joystick.

The controller retails at $59.99, ten dollars more than than we were originally quoted in August, and includes three Xbox Live Arcade games (Frogger, Astro Pop and Time Pilot), downloadable using the included codes. The USB wired controller can also be used with Windows XP.

The controller works perfectly with games like Frogger and Pac-Man. If you play these classic games often enough, this controller will solve a lot of complaints surrounding the use of the normal Xbox 360 controller. The joystick also has a button on top of the stick, which functions as the A button. If we could think of a single flight sim game off the top of our heads for the 360, that button would come in handy as a replacement trigger button. The Mad Catz game stick is great for the classics and, with some creative thinking, could also be used with newer games.
Joystiq hands-on: Mad Catz Arcade GameStick (Xbox 360) originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 03 Feb 2007 14:30:00 EST. It's true, if you believe a suit by Fenner Investments (PDF link) which claims that Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo are all violating its patent for "a low-voltage joystick port interface," specifically one that converts an analog joystick input into machine-readable digital form.

Never mind that the patent was filed in 1998, years after both Sony and Nintendo had introduced analog joysticks into their PlayStation and Nintendo 64 controllers (and filed patents for the same). Never mind that Microsoft had patented an interface for Windows-based analog controllers in 1997. Never mind that the idea of an analog joystick on a video game console goes at least as far back as the German VC4000 from 1978.

None of this matters. Clearly all the major console manufacturers are willfully infringing on the long-held patents of this relatively unknown company. We predict a court decision for hundreds of millions of dollars in damages to be awarded to Fenner any day now. We're holding our breath even as we write this.

The biggest of which is the addition of a "spinner" control around the smaller analogue stick on the right side of the controller. Older fanboys will recognize the spinner as a "paddle" controller, allowing accurate control in games like Pong and Tempest. Unfortunately, the stick still doesn't look well suited to old school fighters like Street Fighter II, Mortal Kombat, or the announced Fatal Fury. On the other hand, it looks like it would be great for older titles like Pac-Man and Defender. The stick will be bundled with Frogger, Time Pilot, and Astropop for a suggested price of $49.99. Assuming the build quality is up to snuff, it sounds like a good deal for retro Arcade buffs. Anybody want one?
Retro Arcade stick releases next month originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 16 Nov 2006 16:00:00 EST. This peanut-butter-in-chocolate match makes it suited to all kinds of emulated games, from Golden Tee and Marble Madness to Pac-Man and Street Fighter. The name of this controller? The Tankstick.

We were with you, but "Tankstick?" Shouldn't that be reserved for a controller modeled after, say, a tank? "Tankstick" makes us think of that scene where Indiana Jones hangs perilously from the tank's side-turret, while the maniacal driver steers with exaggerated, stair-climber arm movements. That's a tank-stick, fit for toning arms while crushing the leading archeologist. At least we coud use the Tankstick to play that Indy game where you whip open the kids' cages and ride the mine carts to sweet freedom.

But we digress.

At $200 -- or $10/pound -- you'll have to play a lot of MAME or GameTap to justify buying the Tankstick. But, like the other X-Arcade controllers, you can get adapters ($20 each) to plug into nearly any console. Alternatively, tell your parents/spouse/children that you need to buy 15 pounds of cheese at once, and later claim it melted on the drive home.
X-Arcade launches Tankstick, tanks call comparison "a little much" originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 21 Sep 2006 20:15:00 EST. Looks like the 360 will be getting an arcade stick after all, courtesy of Mad Catz. While it's obvious that the stick should be perfect for old school favorites like Galaga, certain elements are rather curious. First of all, the controller has both a joystick and a D-pad, suggesting that the stick is in fact analogue. Also, the triggers and shoulder buttons don't appear to be on the face of the controller at all. As such, hopeful Street Fighter purists may still be left without a suitable control.

The original item on EB Games has since been yanked from the internet, but we managed to snag a shot of the page, which lists the controller for $69.99 (ouch) with a release date of October 1st. That's a pretty hefty price for a decent game of Pac-Man.
360 gets a retro arcade stick originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 18 Aug 2006 10:30:00 EST. The sole available image reveals the face buttons, guide button and right analog stick to have been retained in the design, though the fate of the triggers is somewhat less clear. It's likely safe to assume that they're cowering somewhere behind the mighty joystick.

Another safe assumption one can make is that the Arcade Stick will make a far more adequate (and authentic) tool for guiding our pellet-munching Pac-men through mazes and our amphibious allies across deadly divides. Then again, strapping a rabid badger to you lap and randomly shoving your fingers into its mouth is already a few steps up from playing XBLA games with the 360 controller's squeaky directional pad. The current retail listing has the Mad Catz stick releasing on the first day of October for an anti-retro, better-be-wireless <strike>$69.99</strike> $49.99. We've contacted Mad Catz for further details (and a larger picture!).

[Thanks Master X 24.]

[Update: We suspected EB Games might yank the page, so we made sure to save a copy. The post now links to a screenshot of the original page.]

[Update: It's been indicated that the price is actually $49.99 and that several Live Arcade titles will be included the stick.
