Chances are, you've played one of Keiji Inafune's games. He created and designed the Mega Man character, produced the Onimusha games, and most recently worked on everybody's favorite zombies-attack-mall action game, Dead Rising. If you happen to be in the NYC area, you, a mere gaming mortal, will be able to meet this esteemed game producer.

The signing will happen at the GameStop across the street from the Manhattan Mall. Joystiq will be sending one photo journalist to the event, camera (and chainsaw) in hand.
Continue reading Meet Keiji Inafune, Mega Man creator, in NYC today

Meet Keiji Inafune, Mega Man creator, in NYC today originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 07 Aug 2007 11:15:00 EST. Not only did he create MegaMan, but he's mulling over the possibility of making a next-gen Onimusha title, reviving the amazing MegaMan Legends franchise, and goes on to talk a bit about the changes made in Resident Evil 5. While every single one of those games deserves their own time in the sun, we're going to squash them together in bullet list form and let you decide who to dote over.

Inafune wants to make MegaMan Legends 3 awfully bad -- moreso than Onimusha and perhaps RE5, but since management won't give him funding, he has to wait until he climbs the ladder a little more.

If an Onimusha sequel is created, Inafune wants to go back to actor-based characters instead of the fictional characters from Dawn of Dreams.

In the same vein, Inafune wants to make an Onimusha with a female lead character, but he's told it would not sell, so it has been denied him these many years! We are sad at hearing this.

As for Resident Evil 5, light is the new source of fear instead of dark. Inafune and gang (including a good number of people from the defunct Clover studios) want to find ways to utilize light to scare people. How realistically it can be used, etc. It seems like it could work. It's hard to see in a house if you've been out in the blazing desert sun for a few hours. Who knows what lurks within!

We hope Inafune gets more sway in Capcom's happenings, because we want to see some amazing games that we know developers are willing to work on. The above three are probably the ones we're looking forward to the most from Capcom, partially because we don't fully believe they'll be happening anytime soon. It's sad, but true. Which of these three would you love to have fall into your hands tomorrow morning?
Next-gen Onimusha, MegaMan Legends, and RE5 discussed originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 31 Jul 2007 17:30:00 EST. The experience yielded an interesting interview on Gamasutra, one that touches on the fate of Clover Studios and the not-so-elusive Ace Attorney 3.

On the topic of Clover Studios and its untimely liquidation, Bellfield asserts that several members of the team have simply been integrated into other Capcom groups. "So, for example, some of the team that worked on Clover titles are now helping Takeuchi-san on Resident Evil 5, helping Inafune-san on a new title for the Wii, so I think it's very much the skill set still stays in the company when those individuals stay and, unfortunately, three individuals chose to leave." The three referenced individuals, namely Shinji Mikami, Atsushi Inaba and Hideki Kamiya, have since formed their own studio, Seeds.

Later in the interview, Bellfield expresses some surprise as to the success Phoenix Wright has found in America, with the original title now having shipped over 100,000 copies since its introduction. "It's shipped steadily for the last year, and we've just shipped Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: Justice for All and we have more coming up, so I think again it's like a good book, it's that word of mouth that gets people out there to learn more about the game." With that, Bellfield likely confirms what we've suspected since Capcom launched it's Ace Attorney 3 contest last week -- the third Phoenix Wright adventure is likely being localized as we speak. English, that is.
Former Clover members now working on Resident Evil 5, new Wii game originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 20 Feb 2007 10:53:00 EST. This webisode features a little more character interaction, but the meat of the trailer is clips of the actual gameplay, including the mech that transforms into a snowmobile. We really must commend Capcom on its marketing skillz, because they seem to be working. Starting way back in May with the demo, every little snippet gets us more interested in the game -- let's not forget the Turkey Day multiplayer demo either. Check out webisode 2 after the break.
Continue reading Lost Planet webisodes 1 & 2 now on XBLM [update 1]

Lost Planet webisodes 1 & 2 now on XBLM [update 1] originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 14 Nov 2006 09:30:00 EST. The card merely reminds you to "Check out Xbox Live Marketplace for new multiplayer demo!" and does not bother with specific dates. Enter Capcom with this announcement: the Lost Planet multiplayer demo will arrive on November 23rd, an obscure American holiday we call Thanksgiving, during which we collectively ingest thousands of turkeys. Some of us even eat the giblets ... *shudder.* The multiplayer demo supports 16 players online, and should give eager gamers a chance to see what Lost Planet has to offer.

Also, in a move probably inspired by Dead Rising's phenomenal demo-to-sale conversion rate, retailers will begin taking pre-orders for the game starting the next day, cleverly dubbed "White Friday" by Capcom. Should you opt for the now obligatory collector's edition, you will be given access to a new map, which will available to the regular edition schmucks for free by summer 2007. And, if that wasn't enough Lost Planet for you, expect to see trailers for the game before this holiday season's biggest movies like Casino Royale.

The revelation of the extra map's availability answers some questions we raised about the collector's edition. Basically, you're paying ten extra dollars for a metal case, art book, and early access to a free map. Is that worth it? Is anyone still planning on getting the collector's edition?

[Via Joystiq]

Lost Planet MP demo + turkey = awesome originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 10 Nov 2006 09:35:00 EST. It looks like someone at Capcom's marketing department liked the idea, as the first webisode of Lost Planet has just hit the web. The short clip introduces some of the characters and gives audiences a rare chance to hear a bad British accent in a videogame. Then again, maybe it's some kind of soap opera cliché and he's only pretending to be British. Whatever the case, the game still looks very nice, and anyone interested should take a look. I'll give you a minute to let the shock subside. And there we go. Sure, the news of a special edition isn't all that exciting. It's what's inside the case that's a little unsettling. There are two extras in the undoubtedly slick metal case. The first is an art manual, which is always cool. It's the second bit that's disturbing. The other item is a token for a free downloadable map. That's it.

This raises some questions. Assuming that the map will be available when the game ships, why not just include it on the disc? How much does the map cost for those who don't get the special edition? Think about it. If you're spending US $69.99 on a special edition, is a free map really a deal? If you can live without the art book, wouldn't it actually be cheaper to pick up the regular edition and pay the 2-5 dollars for the map? Unless special edition owners get early access to the map -- or the map is exorbitantly priced -- it just doesn't make much sense. Any thoughts?

[Via Evil Avatar]
Lost Planet Collector's Edition is weak originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 13 Oct 2006 14:30:00 EST. Perhaps you noticed that there was absolutely no Resident Evil 5 information revealed at TGS -- not even a peep. This has led some to speculate that somebody -- Microsoft -- has secured the exclusive rights to the game. What's more, the head honcho of 360 Japan, Takashi Sensui, gave a tantalizing reply when questioned directly about the issue:

"All I can say is we are very good friends with Mr. Inafune."

As any good Fanboy already knows, Mr. (Keiji) Inafune is the producer behind Resident Evil 5 as well as the runaway smash hit, Dead Rising. Wait a minute, Scooby. Didn't we run a story last month about Capcom ending PS3 exclusives as a result of Dead Rising's high sales numbers? And Lost Planet looks like it could be pretty big, too. Hmmm, this RE5 exclusivity business just might have some legs after all. If only there were some huge convention where Capcom and Microsoft could reveal such a bombshell, somewhere in Europe. Spain perhaps.

[Thanks, The1]

Update: It looks like Capcom has officially shot this rumor down. Speaking with CVG, a spokesperson said, "Resident Evil 5 will release on PS3 and Xbox 360 as announced. There a no plans for an exclusive with the game." Oh, well. At least we know it won't be exclusive for that other console either. Why else would the creator of a video game about a man trapped in a shopping mall fending off swarms of brain-hungry zombies trap himself in a shopping mall to fend off swarms of autograph-hungry fans?

Despite the veiled insult, fans lined up for a chance to get some of Inafune's brain droppings scribbled on various things. The esteemed developer's latest game, yet another entry into the zombie-ridden shopping mall sim genre, has already generated a great deal of buzz, possibly because it allows you to beat undead cretons to a pulp with baseball bats, benches and finely matured wheels of cheese.

If you plan on attending the signing event tomorrow, here's what you need to know:

Date: Tuesday, August 8, 2006

Time: 4:00PM - 6:00PM

Location: EB Games, Redmond Town Center
16495 NE 74th Street
Redmond, Washington 98052 (Tel. 425-895-8331)

Demeanor: Approachable, but may unexpectedly and infrequently lunge

And don't forget, you'll actually have to purchase a copy of the game in order to have it signed. There will be plenty of free Xbox t-shirts, however, no doubt meant to distract the crowd's inherent urge to tear Mr. Inafune limb from limb and devour his brain.
Swarm Dead Rising producer at signing tomorrow originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 07 Aug 2006 21:25:00 EST.
