OnLive CEO Steve Perlman promises a lot from his company's new cloud gaming apps for Android and iOS devices, but how does the app actually work? I've been able to play with the iPad version for the past few days, and using just the touchscreen it's far from perfect. While yes, the system does stream full live game audio and video to your device (which is impressive in itself), the controls are, frankly, a mess. OnLive's virtual controllers are just as janky as you'd imagine. In complex console games where you're using both joysticks and all of the buttons, it's playable but far from ideal.

The wireless controller, on the other hand, really shows off what's possible with a service like this. Read on for impressions of using OnLive's new accessory with the iPad, as well as a full list of game compatibility on the service at launch.
Players of the PC version of Dungeon Siege 3 were disappointed with the keyboard-and-mouse controls used in the game, generally deciding that using an Xbox 360 controller was the way to go. If you're one of those folks, lead designer Nathaniel Chapman says there's good news: Obsidian plans to release an update that will improve the traditional PC controls. According to Chapman, better PC controls for the game is "one thing I would have liked to have spent more time on, and we are actually spending time on now."

Chapman also hinted that Obsidian would like to have made "a more fleshed out tutorial system" and "more unique armor variants" for the game's four playable characters. But those will have to wait for future versions of the game: "It's always good sequel or DLC material," he said.
Obsidian plans Dungeon Siege 3 update with better PC controls originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 23 Jun 2011 02:00:00 EST. But, of course, that would have been exceedingly silly.

Instead, the typing tutor title will ship with a Bluetooth keyboard that connects to the DS through the Bluetooth-equipped game cartridge. This new peripheral isn't entirely ridiculous (maybe like 90 percent ridiculous) -- according to Nintendo president Satoru Iwata, the prototype keyboard connects to iPhone and Android devices just fine, though Nintendo won't guarantee such compatibility. But if you've been asking for a Nintendo-designed Bluetooth keyboard, here you go!

Would-be pokémon typists will be able to Battle & Get the game and keyboard (its exact size is unknown) in Japan this April. A release outside of Japan has not been announced.
'Pokemon Typing DS' comes with Bluetooth keyboard originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 28 Jan 2011 16:00:00 EST. If you've elected to drop a few wads of cash on acquiring the new keyboard and Mustang guitar peripherals so you can enjoy Rock Band 3's newest features, you've secretly invested in a pair of fully functional MIDI instruments as well. Create Digital Music, a site dedicated to -- well, you can figure it out -- recently reviewed the two devices' capacity for real-life rocking; and surprisingly, they're both very capable in that regard.

The Mustang guitar may not have the authenticity of real strings, but at $150, it's one of the most affordable MIDI guitars on the planet. With Synth and Strum input modes, it could have some interesting applications for those creative types. The keyboard also received high marks for its ergonomic form factor and velocity-sensitive keys. In short, it's not the best keyboard on the planet, but it can (and should) be used as an actual keytar. Why haven't you bought this yet? You're wasting everyone's time.
Rock Band 3 peripherals tested as MIDI instruments originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 29 Oct 2010 05:13:00 EST. Sure, the StarCraft 2-branded Spectre mouse, Marauder keyboard and Banshee headset from Razer (all designed in collaboration with Blizzard) have other features that make them well-suited for games -- like specialized configuration utilities and quick response times -- but those aren't why anyone would buy one of these. Cool backlighting is.

Besides, when the keyboard description lists things like "Optimized Key Travel Distance" as a selling point, "pretty lights" doesn't seem like such a minor thing to latch on to. The set will be released in the US, Europe and Korea in November, with the mouse retailing for $80 (€80/94,800 won), and the keyboard and headset for $120 (€120/142,800 won) each.
The $130 bundle is still available for pre-order on Xbox and WIi, and both the keyboard and game are available separately on PS3. Just ... no bundle. And that means that Rock Band 3 and the keyboard, together, are effectively ten dollars more expensive on PS3.

Harmonix addressed this baffling omission today, announcing that due to "the agreement terms for the region," the PS3 keyboard bundle will not be available in the US, though the game and keyboard will be available separately. "This does not affect European customers as the Rock Band 3 keyboard/software PS3 bundles will still be available in Europe," the announcement states. We've contacted the developer to find out what exactly this agreement entails. If Harmonix sings, we'll let you know.
PS3 Rock Band 3 keyboard bundle won't be sold in US originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 02 Oct 2010 03:00:00 EST. Don't call it a keytar! If you've been waiting for a chance to see Rock Band 3's new keyboard in action, Harmonix delivers just that in its latest trailer for October's music/rhythm release. We're certainly enticed by its addition to regular gameplay, but that Pro mode? Well, we'll leave it to ... someone else.
Continue reading Rock Band 3 trailer shows off the power of love (and keyboards)

Rock Band 3 trailer shows off the power of love (and keyboards) originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 08 Sep 2010 17:10:00 EST. At a Harmonix event a few weeks ago, I finally got some solid fingers-on time with Rock Band 3's keyboard, and as a guy who took nearly 10 years of Friday afternoon piano lessons as a kid, I can say that it's a nice set of keys. The quality of the plastic ivories is not quite as good as your Grandma's classic Steinway, but better than a cheap Casio, and Harmonix has put just as much thought and design into the keytar* as it did into the previous Rock Band instruments.

I also got to play with the game's trainer modes
for the first time. Training is available for each of the three instruments, and rather than just a simple tutorial, the trainer is a fully interactive game that teaches you, step-by-step, the finer points of playing both the real and plastic gear. When teamed up with the instruments and a little bit of time and practice, Rock Band 3's trainer really seems like it can teach you the same things that Mrs. Crane taught me all those years ago.

Gallery: Rock Band 3 (8/17)

Continue reading Preview: Rock Band 3 keyboard, Pro Keys and Keys trainer

Preview: Rock Band 3 keyboard, Pro Keys and Keys trainer originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 17 Aug 2010 00:01:00 EST. As the official peripheral manufacturer for Rock Band 3 instruments, Mad Catz was at E3 showing off its new Rock Band products (sans game). On the outside, the MIDI PRO-Adapter (pictured above in all three flavors) looks like a chunky, 16-bit era controller -- in fact, in can be used as a gamepad, confirms Mad Catz global PR manager Alex Verrey. Inside, the device contains the technology to convert a real MIDI instrument into a Rock Band 3 controller. (The adapter is not compatible with other music games.)

The PRO-Adapter connects to an Xbox 360, PS3 or Wii via USB, and the MIDI instrument plugs into the port on the side of the device. A three-way switch in the center (above the system button) toggles between drum, keyboard and guitar inputs. Just above the switch, is the velocity adjustment wheel used to "tune" MIDI drums and reduce cross-talk during gameplay. The triangular wedge button on the bottom right of the PRO-Adapter activates "Overdrive" mode in Rock Band 3, and a belt clip on the back of the peripheral keeps the adapter secured to your person (just mind the length of the USB cable as you leap about). There's also a headset jack on the adapter.

"We can't possibly guarantee compatibility with all MIDI instruments," warns Verrey, but the MIDI PRO-Adapter "should work with the vast, vast majority." Verrey guarantees compatibility with the real Fender Squier Stratocaster guitar that works with Rock Band 3, and a full MIDI instrument compatibility list will be published prior to the MIDI PRO-Adapter retail release ($40) this holiday.
Yes, there is a keytar peripheral (though in the game, it's just called "keys"). Yes, there is a Rock Band Pro mode, complete with its own 102-button guitar, that's more complicated than anything you've ever seen a plastic instrument do. Yes, a full band now consists of seven different instruments: two guitars, three vocalists (harmonies included, thanks to The Beatles), drums and a keyboard. But all of that stuff already reported by USA Today isn't what makes Rock Band 3 worthy of a plus one to the version number.

It's everything else. Harmonix has reimagined their premiere title. They've fixed problems with the game (including the most common problem players have faced), smoothed out the rough edges, and added a ton of little extra features and fun. From the menu screen on, Rock Band 3 is very clearly, as the developers said during a pre-E3 event a few weeks ago, "a clean slate design of Rock Band. Most games don't take advantage of the PS3's native ability to support a USB keyboard and mouse, much to the chagrin of those who veer away from the console's regular controller. However, Penguin United wants to capitalize on this shortcoming with its upcoming Eagle-Eye peripheral. Debuting at E3 next week, the Converter offers a key-mapping feature that lets you re-map all the buttons of a PS3 controller to a standard keyboard. According to the company, the Eagle-Eye will offer "1 to 1 translation from a PS3 controller to the mouse."

Set to retail for $59.99, the Eagle-Eye is "compatible with all PS3 console versions" and will be "future proof with firmware updates." It's certainly an interesting claim and one we'll definitely get our hands on next week during E3. Until then, these demonstration videos (after the break) will have to sate your curiosity.
Continue reading Eagle-Eye peripheral adds keyboard support to PS3 FPS games

Eagle-Eye peripheral adds keyboard support to PS3 FPS games originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 10 Jun 2010 11:25:00 EST. Given that Harmonix already teased the inclusion of a new instrument in Rock Band 3 -- the keyboard -- we almost feel like we've been taken for a ride. That is, if today's report from Ars Technica's mole on the game is correct and the keyboard is actually a keytar. "What?!" you cry. Much like Frankie, we must say, "Relax!" because, well, we're totally on board with the concept. Just think about the possibilities!

The Ars report also alleges the addition of a "Pro" mode "that will require proper technique, and may lead to actual skills on guitar and bass." Perhaps that mode will have some tie to the peripherals, which will all be assembled by Mad Catz, apparently, (as hinted at earlier this year); meaning EA would only handle the distribution of game discs.

Though Ars' mole has been accurate with rumors in the past, without confirmation from MTV Games, Harmonix, EA, or Mad Catz (yes, we tried -- only MTV Games responded, saying, "We do not comment on rumors or speculation"), this report is still, unfortunately, unconfirmed.
Report: Rock Band 3 features keytar, 'Pro' mode originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 26 May 2010 15:40:00 EST. Dookieheads (that's what Green Day fans are colloquially referred to, right?) who downloaded the two-track Green Day: Rock Band demo from Xbox Live Marketplace today (gold subscribers only) found a little bonus waiting for them when they exited the demo: The teaser image posted above. Alongside the series' four iconic instrument logos is a whole new symbol, which seems to indicate that keyboards (or perhaps ... keytars?) will be added to Rock Band 3.

You can check out the demo, which includes the songs "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" and "Welcome to Paradise," to see the teaser firsthand, and to start imagining all the wonderful implications a Rock Band keyboard might have.
It's finally over ... and it's just beginning! Apple has introduced the iPad to the world, ending a long-drawn-out development phase fraught with rumor and speculation. Today -- like, just now -- the iPad made its stage debut at Apple's "Latest Creation" event in San Francisco.

Quite the production, er, introduction, eh? Here's what we know right off the bat, courtesy of Steve Jobs:

"It's very thin -- you can change the homescreen to whatever you want"

"You can browse the web with it"

"Phenomenal for mail"

"Album, photos ... you can look at all of them, flick through them, it's a wonderful way to share. Calendar ... months ..."

"We have the iTunes store built right in. YouTube and YouTube in HD"

"And it's awesome to watch movies and TV"

"Even bigger than the DSi XL" (okay, so Steve didn't say that -- we did!)

Cool, but does it play games? Update: Yep, it does -- your old iPhone games! We even played a few in our hands-on preview.

Some additional specs: 0.5-inches thin; 1.5 pounds; 9.7-inch IPS display; multi-touch; powered by 1GHz Apple A4 chip; available in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB models; Bluetooth 2.1 plus EDR and 802.11n WiFi; speakers, mic and 30-pin connector; syncs over USB; and up to 10-hour battery life. First-party accessories include a standard dock (think: picture-frame mode), a keyboard dock and a case.

As for pricing, the 16GB model is $499 (or $629 with 3G compatibility); or 32GB for $599 ($729 with 3G); or 64GB for $699 ($829 with 3G). 3G-compatible models have an option between two data plans through AT&T: 250MB of data per month for $14.99 or unlimted data per month for $29.99. The data plans are prepaid and activated directly on the iPad -- there's no contract (so you can cancel anytime). WiFi models ship in 60 days (late March); 3G units in 90 (late April).
We know how hard it can be to expend precious energy on something as trivial as a keyboard - we spend all day doing exactly that! So it's with proud, near-jubilant excitement that we bring you news of the gaming glove "Peregrine," which allows for keyboard-free game playing, becoming available for pre-order.

It's not exactly equipped to handle twitch shooters: the Peregrine was made with MMOs in mind. Rather than push down all those pesky keyboard buttons, it allows for up to 40 different configurable movements instead. The $129 device (that's if you pre-order -- it'll be $149 otherwise) runs on USB and will connect as a keyboard, so compatibility shouldn't be too much of an issue.

You can quit writing your Power Glove 2.0 fanfic right now - this ain't it. We do, however, expect to see a YouTube-derived sequel to The Wizard around the end of January, when the first pre-orders are expected to ship to consumers. Almost two years ago, Ubisoft dropped a virtual guitar simulator on the DS, titled "Jam Sessions" -- and that's just great, if you picked up the six-stringed instrument during your collegiate career in an attempt to woo Damien Rice-obsessed co-eds. Some of us, however, prefer the ivories. And by "prefer", we mean "we were forced to spend our childhood summers hunched over a beaten-up Steinway, pursuing our parents' feverish artistic dreams as our peers actually enjoyed their lives."

Fortunately for us, a Namco Bandai press release just revealed a Jam Sessions-esque title for the DS titled -- what else -- Easy Piano. The game comes with the keyboard peripheral you see above, so we hope interested parties have held onto their GBA slot-equipped DS Lites. With a lesson mode, a play-along mode and even a song creaion mode, it sounds like a neat offering for piano enthusiasts. We won't be sure until we try out that tiny, tiny keyboard, though.
Easy Piano brings keyboard peripheral to DS Lite originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 31 Jul 2009 02:00:00 EST.
Is your desk just not looking enough like the dashboard of an Imperial TIE fighter? Logitech is seeking to solve what it evidently sees as a common dilemma with its new G-Series gaming peripherals.

The offerings are headlined by the G19 keyboard ($199), which features an integrated 320x240 color LCD, presumably for targeting Rebel scum. There's also a 5000DPI G9x mouse ($99) for really accurate kills and a G35 voice headset ($129) that simulates 7.1 audio and, taking a cue from the insanely popular Xbox 360 feature, changes the pitch of your voice, should you so desire. Look for the keyboard and headset in March; the mouse is set to follow in April.
Well, online at least. Although a specific release date (other than "early December") for the PS3 wireless keypad peripheral was never announced, Gamestop's webstore shows that the keypad is now available for sale. Unfortunately, they don't seem to have them in stock at Gamestop's brick and mortar locations yet.

The price is still a steep $49.99 plus shipping. Sony's VP of Sales, Ian Jackson, confirmed to Joystiq that the PS3 keypad will make its way to retail in the beginning of December. The attachment connects to the top of the PS3 controller, giving users easy access to a very tiny keyboard. Do you want an alternative to PSP's current keyboard? Perhaps you'd like to rip open an Xbox 360 chatpad and use it to connect it to a PSP? That's exactly what the clever folks at Acidmods did. A remarkable feat of engineering, indeed -- but we'll patiently wait for the official keyboard peripheral, due next year.

Video is embedded after the break. Remember when Neversoft's Brian Bright allegedly told G4 that a new peripheral was coming to Guitar Hero World Tour, and G4 speculated it would, in fact, be a keyboard? We had a chance to talk to the very same Brian Bright who told us that "a keyboard controller deserves to be introduced with its own game. This is something we're thinking about." B-b-b-but what about all the keyboard section in the song creator? Bright says, "there are reasons why we haven't included a keyboard controller." He elaborates that not all of the songs have keyboard parts so, "adding a keyboard controller would either have limited our choices, or the players."

... so Keyboard Hero: Billy Joel confirmed? Check out the full interview for more on World Tour's song creation system.
Rumorong: New Guitar Hero peripheral not a keyboard originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 26 Aug 2008 10:45:00 EST. All Animal Crossing games are wonderful, but that's not all they have in common: as it happens, each game in the series to date has featured an unwieldy, cumbersome user interface. Every tool and item can only be selected by opening a totally separate menu, you can't skip through any of the game's (oft-repeated) dialogue, and writing letters/entering text is a royal pain in the backside, thanks to the excruciatingly annoying on-screen keyboard.

This morning, JC's hands-on impressions of Animal Crossing: City Folk revealed that Nintendo had fixed the first problem, by allowing users to cycle through their inventory with the d-pad. And now the third issue has been resolved, for City Folk will let players hook a USB keyboard up to their Wiis -- superb news! Just give us the ability to skip instantly through Nook's natterings and Blathers' blather, and we'll be pleased as punch.

E308: Animal Crossing to support keyboards, save fruit-picking time originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 17 Jul 2008 14:45:00 EST. Surfing the 'net on Nintendo's white box 'o joy just got a whole lot easier. Logitech has whipped the covers off of this sleek beast: a cordless Wii keyboard. This bad boy works from up to 30 feet (10 meters) from the console, and comes with dedicated buttons for "Zoom In" and "Zoom Out," "Forward" and "Back", "Quit," and "OK."

So there you go: no more painstakingly entering text with the Wiimote. Now, aside from surfing the 'net, what else do we think this might be used for? We'll find out soon enough!

[Thanks, Chris!]
E308: Logitech unveils cordless Wii keyboard originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 15 Jul 2008 11:34:00 EST. Our friends across the pond (and Chris) have a choice when it comes to keyboards for their Wii. No, we're not talking about the wide assortment of cheap USB keyboards that are out there and compatible with the console, we mean Logic 3's Wii keyboard above. Aside from its plain design, it features the normal QWERTY set-up and will cost you £14.99 (about $30). It will release on July 18th.

[Via Engadget]
Logic 3 opens preorders on keyboard peripheral for Wii originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 08 Jul 2008 23:00:00 EST. The Midify chip also interfaces with other electronics -- apparently anything that has some kind of user input. For just $35, this chip adds a MIDI port to the DS.

It doesn't turn the DS into a MIDI sequencer or allow you to output MIDI, rather, it adds a MIDI in port to the DS, allowing you to control the DS via keyboard. Confused? Imagine the DS is the microwave seen here -- it has been fitted with the Midify chip.

[Via hackaday]
MIDIfy your DS with a new chip originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 23 Jun 2008 21:00:00 EST. D4 Enterprise just opened up a new area of their "Project MSX" website that provides information on the MSX game(s) available on the Japanese Virtual Console. This site, which is designed similarly to the VC sites operated by Sega and Hudson, is going to be an excellent resource for learning about obscure MSX games as they come out, with boxarts, screenshots and game descriptions.

The page for the sole MSX game currently available, Aleste, revealed surprising, previously unknown information about the Wii's MSX emulator: specifically, that Aleste supports the use of USB keyboards, in addition to the Wiimote, GameCube controller, and Classic Controller. It makes sense since the MSX is a computer, but this is the first new control option for a Virtual Console game since the service began.
Surprise, again! It's taking long enough. GPS for PSP is available in many territories around the world, but the US has been trailing behind. Still scheduled for within the next twelve months, the American version of the GPS peripheral will have a few enhancements over its earlier incarnations. The navigation software, created by Tele Atlas, will run entirely in 3D. The software will be available on UMD, and as a downloadable to store directly on Memory Stick. It will be priced between $100 and $200, and will include a carmount. According to Gizmodo, the GPS experience may be enhanced in the US: "Sony is thinking about treasure hunts, friend locaters and other geo-coolness."

In addition, more details about the mysterious PSP keyboard have been unearthed: the keyboard will plug into the AV/headphone port at the bottom, and will flip over to cover the PSP screen when not in use. Other than that new tidbit, the keyboard remains an elusive mystery. Hopefully, we'll learn more during E3.
More details on the US release of the PSP GPS and keyboard originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 22 May 2008 10:30:00 EST. Too impatient for Korg's DS-10 release this summer? Don't let those trivial obstacles discourage you! You don't need a too-live crew to compose a rumpshaker, nor do you need expensive software applications. In fact, having a Nintendo DS isn't imperative either. As many chiptune musicians can attest, you don't need the latest handheld technology to lay down a boss track.

Take this artist in the video above, for example -- he's using Nanoloop, a homebrew synthesizer/sequencer available for both Game Boy and Game Boy Advance systems. You can download the program on the developer's official site for free! Of course, there are a few additional items required for the complete setup:

A mess of cables - $50+

Korg Kaossilator Dynamic Phrase Synthesizer - $200

Korg KP3 Kaoss Pad Dynamic Effect/Sampler - $400

Expensive? Sure, but listen to that music! These are the lush songs your android grandchildren will make babies to after watching the sun set on an alien world.

[Via Nicovideo]
Micro music: Jam Without the Band originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 19 Mar 2008 22:30:00 EST. You'll finally be able to start that DS-only Electric Light Orchestra cover band you've been talking about, thanks to AQ Interactive and Korg.

Korg has created a DS version of their MS-10 synthesizer with some features that not even the original has. You can create music via a keyboard interface, a free-form touch-screen panel, or a "matrix" interface (fill in squares to make notes). It's certainly a lot smaller than the real thing, while also providing the authentic "a bunch of knobs and stuff we don't know how to use" experience.

AQ Interactive will release the DS-10 in Japan for 4,800 yen ($47) this July.

[Via Famitsu]
Korg DS-10 brings the DS to a new group of nerds originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 12 Mar 2008 12:45:00 EST. We have to admit that this peripheral by MadCatz looks like a winner. It reminds us a lot of Xbox 360's chatpad -- this device plugs into the PS3 controller and allows you to type at a whim. Supposedly, the device was released all the way back in May, but it seemingly has fallen out of our grasp.

This seems rather ingenious, but user reviews have been negative for one key reason -- apparently, it doesn't work with PS2 games. Final Fantasy XI fans were quite disappointed. But, those of you that enjoy using the web browser and the XMB messaging system may find this $30 peripheral a neat addition to your gadgets collection. See a video, after the cut.

[Via PSP GadgetZ]
Continue reading MadCatz brings portable keyboard with Thumbpad

MadCatz brings portable keyboard with Thumbpad originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 19 Jan 2008 23:30:00 EST. We immediately got the crazy idea of a keyboard with a Wii pointer built in, so you can point and click by waving the keyboard around. It was a weirdly practical, and fun, idea.

But as always, reality is less awesome than our controller fantasies. Logitech announced that their "new" USB keyboard will be ... the Classic Keyboard 200. (pictured above). They added a blurb to the Japanese product page that mentions that it's been tested with the Wii browser and found to work. Which means that you can get the new Wii peripheral right now, because it's just their basic USB keyboard. It only seems to be available in white in Japan, however. Importing might be worth it for you, because in addition to the color, the logo will say "Logicool" (Logitech's Japanese name) which we find hilarious.
New hardware MEGATON: Logitech's Wii keyboard originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 11 Oct 2007 18:47:00 EST. It was a big day for Nintendo fans. Not only did we get some great announcements out of a surprise conference in Japan, but we were greeted by the friendly blue glow when we were able to tear ourselves away from said news and actually look at our beloved consoles.

While exciting on the face, though, today's update ends up being less than thrilling. Much-needed keyboard functionality came to the Opera browser, but it's still limited, and the Wii remote must be used to navigate through text boxes. Take the average search form as an example; at the computer, most of the time, you can type in your search terms and hit enter -- or at the most, tab to the search button and then hit enter. No such luck with the Wii's browser. It's more like this:

Navigate to text box with Wii remote

Enter text on keyboard

Navigate to enter/search button with Wii remote

Profit. Very slow and awkward profit, but better than a poke in the eye with ye olde sharp stick.

Need more accessories that match your PS3's sexy piano black coat? Logitech has got your back. Coming soon are a Bluetooth gaming headset and a Bluetooth keyboard with touch pad, both in that shade of black that PS3 owners can't get enough of. The laptop runs on 2 AA batteries, but the headset comes with a rechargeable battery. The Cordless Vantage Headset and the Cordless MediaBoard Pro will retail for $79.99 each.

Just a guess, but maybe this Logitech headset is higher quality than the one bundled with Warhawk? Hardcore Warhawk fans (or those who bought the download version) might want to keep an eye out for this headset.

[via Pocket-lint]
Logitech's shiny Bluetooth keyboard and headset originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 13 Sep 2007 17:30:00 EST.
The latest Wii system update is just the gift that keeps on giving -- we're still finding new, unannounced features included in the downloadable update. Case in point, you can now plug a USB keyboard into those vestigial USB slots in the back of the system for easier text input in some situations.

The support is far from universal -- while you can use the keyboard to type out message board messages, you can't use it to enter a name for you Mii, suggest a poll question on the Everybody Votes Channel or, most importantly, fill in web addresses and forms on the Internet Channel. The Wii Shop Channel, oddly enough, does support the keyboard for typing in search terms, and it was the only channel to receive a significant overhaul in the latest system update. Could more expansive keyboard support be on the way? You'll know as soon as we do.

[Thanks James]
Wii update quietly adds limited USB keyboard support originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 08 Aug 2007 10:42:00 EST.
We're not sure how someone decided to randomly plug in a keyboard after yesterday's update and test it, but bless the little buggers at NeoGAF who gave it a shot -- because it works! Before you start turning cartwheels, however, know this: keyboard support seems limited. We tried an older Micro Innovations keyboard we used to use with the PS2 first, and it was a no go -- but a newer Apple USB keyboard worked like a charm for messaging and in the Wii Shop channel (but apparently nowhere else). We can only guess the Wii wanted to match. We must say, however, the cord length required some moving-around of things on our cluttered game stand and typing in an uncomfortable standing position. Still, this update bodes well -- if a future update brings keyboard functionality to the Internet Channel, things could get very interesting indeed.
