That's <em>amazingly</em> convenient! The only inconvenient part of it is finding the right games to buy -- and that's where we come in, with our <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/portabliss">Portabliss</a> column. In each installment, we'll tell you about a downloadable game on the iPhone, iPad, Android device, DSi, 3DS, PSP, etc. Today: <span style="font-style: italic;">Tumble Pop.</span></small></font><hr size="2" style="padding-left: 5px; " width="100%" /><center> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/07/25/portabliss-kid-icarus-of-myths-and-monsters/"><img alt="Portabliss Kid Icarus Of Myths and Monsters" data-src-height="350" data-src-width="530" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/07/ki725.jpg" style="margin: 4px; " /></a></center><em>Kid Icarus</em> and <em>Metroid</em> are inextricably linked in their early history. The two NES games came out in parallel, as silver-boxed "Password Paks" in the US, and both were produced by the late Gunpei Yokoi. Also thanks to Yokoi, both saw sequels on the Game Boy that maintained the basic gameplay of the original in portable form. For <em>Metroid 2</em>, that meant isolation and exploration. For <em>Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters</em>, which has joined it on the 3DS Virtual Console, it means "really weird and difficult."<br /><br />In other words, this Game Boy game is really only recommended to people who have played the NES game and therefore know what they're getting into. Virtually every element that made the NES game such an anomaly are present here, including rooms full of flying monsters or tiles that attack you in large numbers; reapers who freak the hell out and send little flying versions of themselves after you; maze-like ending levels to each world; and eggplants.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/07/25/portabliss-kid-icarus-of-myths-and-monsters/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Portabliss: Kid Icarus Of Myths and Monsters</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/07/25/portabliss-kid-icarus-of-myths-and-monsters/">Portabliss: Kid Icarus Of Myths and Monsters</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 25 Jul 2012 20:30:00 EST. It's fresh, exciting, funny, and has the ability to be customized deeply to the player's interest and comfort level.<br /><br />It is, in short, an <em>excellent</em> game. And it's one I almost didn't bother to play, because -- to put it charitably -- its controls are a barrier to entry that is uncharacteristic for Nintendo. To put it bluntly, the controls are uncomfortable and hard to get used to. Nintendo is aware of this, hence the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/03/19/kid-icarus-uprisings-3ds-stand-holds-up-to-scrutiny/">stand</a>. I was fully ready to write the game off based on the controls, if only it weren't so consistently awesome in every other way.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/kid-icarus-uprising-1-19-12/">Kid Icarus: Uprising (1/19/12)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/kid-icarus-uprising-1-19-12/#4764029"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/01/kidicarusuprisingbabel-club---02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/kid-icarus-uprising-1-19-12/#4764030"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/01/kidicarusuprisingblack-club-01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/kid-icarus-uprising-1-19-12/#4764031"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/01/kidicarusuprisingburst-blade-01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/kid-icarus-uprising-1-19-12/#4764032"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/01/kidicarusuprisingcenturion-assit-01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/kid-icarus-uprising-1-19-12/#4764033"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/01/kidicarusuprisingchapter-1---air-01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/03/23/kid-icarus-uprising-review/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Kid Icarus Uprising review: Uplifting</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/03/23/kid-icarus-uprising-review/">Kid Icarus Uprising review: Uplifting</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 23 Mar 2012 10:00:00 EST. Nintendo of America has finally revealed at least one way for North Americans to get their hands on the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/02/theres-another-more-familiar-kid-icarus-coming-to-3ds/">3D Classics remake</a> of the NES <em>Kid Icarus</em>: by pre-ordering <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/kid-icarus-uprising"><em>Kid Icarus: Uprising</em></a>. Nintendo reported today that the download code will be delivered along with pickup of the game, from "select retailers."<br />
<br />
In other parts of the world, the eShop download was given out as a freebie with registration of two qualifying 3DS games on Club Nintendo, and then offered separately for sale later.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/19/3d-classics-kid-icarus-is-a-pre-order-bonus-for-uprising/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>3D Classics Kid Icarus is a pre-order bonus for Uprising</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/19/3d-classics-kid-icarus-is-a-pre-order-bonus-for-uprising/">3D Classics Kid Icarus is a pre-order bonus for Uprising</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 19 Jan 2012 14:00:00 EST. What's that? You say you want Kid Icarus but you don't want any of that newfangled 3D? Well, according to Australia's Classification Board, your wish has been granted <em>sort of</em>. The site has posted a <a href="http://www.classification.gov.au/www/cob/find.nsf/5b6ebdff7f5b9a24ca2575ca00062226/5d5bbe91b3047e45ca2579590057f9e3?OpenDocument">rating</a> for the original <em>Kid Icarus</em> as a <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/3d-classics">3D Classic</a> for the 3DS.<br />
<br />
There's no telling how much of a 3D makeover Pit will receive - or when it will be released, for that matter - but at least those yearning for the (super difficult) classic will have a chance to run from Death once again.<br />
<br />
Update: Nintendo has officially revealed that <em>Kid Icarus</em> will be offered as a free download in Europe for registering two qualifying 3DS titles with Club Nintendo. For the second E3 in a row, Nintendo wowed E3-goers on stage with a presentation of<em> <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/kid-icarus-uprising">Kid Icarus: Uprising</a></em>. That's a nice way of saying the game still isn't out, in case you didn't pick up on that subtlety. This year, however, Nintendo did have playable demos in both single- and multiplayer.<br />
<br />
Wait, multiplayer? <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/07/kid-icarus-uprising-includes-3-on-3-multiplayer-ar-card-battles/">It's true!</a> The 3DS update to the classic franchise includes a multiplayer mode that takes the ground-based parts of the single-player game and turns them into a competitive sport.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/kid-icarus-uprising-e3-2011-0/">Kid Icarus: Uprising (E3 2011)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/kid-icarus-uprising-e3-2011-0/#4206294"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/3dskidicarus1scrn01e3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/kid-icarus-uprising-e3-2011-0/#4206295"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/3dskidicarus2scrn02e3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/kid-icarus-uprising-e3-2011-0/#4206296"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/3dskidicarus3scrn03e3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/kid-icarus-uprising-e3-2011-0/#4206297"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/3dskidicarus4scrn04e3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/kid-icarus-uprising-e3-2011-0/#4206298"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/3dskidicarus5scrn05e3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/09/kid-icarus-uprising-multiplayer-preview-pitted-against-friends/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Kid Icarus: Uprising multiplayer preview: Pitted against friends</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/09/kid-icarus-uprising-multiplayer-preview-pitted-against-friends/">Kid Icarus: Uprising multiplayer preview: Pitted against friends</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 09 Jun 2011 01:00:00 EST. "In my experience of development and actually using it," he said, "when you have a lot of objects flying towards the user I find that it's more likely to cause eye strain so during development I'm using objects moving away from the user which doesn't have that effect." It sounds like the 3D effects will be most notable for Pit's arrows and projectiles, then, rather than things being flung at the winged hero. <br />
<br />
The path of those projectiles is also noteworthy, according to Sakurai: "In standard shooters or FPS games you see the bullet travel to its destination and it's just a dot because it travels in a straight line," Sakurai explained. "But because of 3D technology you can use arcing shots and get a sense of a bullet travelling with real depth."<br />

Sakurai also mentioned that he had an indirect role in the system's development. "Early on, Nintendo were soliciting lots of feedback from within the company and from me. And I had very specific requests from Mr. Iwata in regard to what my ideal picture of the device was, etc." He didn't say what his specific recommendations were, but he did subsequently call the combination of the touch screen and the Slide Panel "very important" for 3D games.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/kid-icarus-uprising-3ds/">Kid Icarus: Uprising (3DS)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/kid-icarus-uprising-3ds/#3095689"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/06/kidicarus2010-06-01-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/kid-icarus-uprising-3ds/#3095690"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/06/kidicarus2010-06-01-2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/kid-icarus-uprising-3ds/#3095691"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/06/kidicarus2010-06-01-3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/kid-icarus-uprising-3ds/#3095692"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/06/kidicarus2010-06-01-4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/kid-icarus-uprising-3ds/#3095693"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/06/kidicarus2010-06-01-5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/02/sakurai-on-how-hes-preventing-kid-icarus-uprising-from-causing/">Sakurai on how he's preventing Kid Icarus: Uprising from causing eye strain</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 02 Aug 2010 16:00:00 EST. "The online capabilities are currently being tested," Sakurai said. "There could be some versus play but we can't go into any detail. There are a lot of capabilities that expand on what was in the DS that people are taking advantage of."<br />
<br />
If anyone's going to make a 3DS online game happen, it's Sakurai, one of the few Nintendo developers to make an online game (<em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/super-smash-bros-brawl">Super Smash Bros. Brawl</a>)</em>. But how would a versus mode work in an on-rails shooter -- score competitions?<br />

Essentially, all of the distinguishing characteristics of the game came into the picture separately.<br />
<br />
First, Sakurai decided that he wanted to make a shooting game for Nintendo's new handheld, which he knew would be more powerful than the DS. Then, according to Sakurai, "Mr. Iwata said, 'Maybe you might like to do some Nintendo franchise,' and I felt that if the match was good, then there's definitely room for that." Sakurai was thinking <em>Star Fox</em>, but "the game design incorporates a lot of different views; for example, flying and shooting sideways, or turning around and shooting behind -- and I felt that there were some restrictions with <em>Star Fox</em> in this regard." (Of course, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/star-fox-64-3d/"><em>Star Fox</em> ended up on 3DS</a> anyway.)<br />
<br />
It was only after coming up with the game concept that Sakurai learned of the 3D screen, and "quite by chance or luck, [Nintendo] found that to be a very good match with the gameplay idea."<br />
<br />
Sakurai also proved that he's basically as clueless as the rest of us about the renewed popularity of Pit, the protagonist of an inscrutable NES game about shooting mice, collecting hammers and being turned into an eggplant. "I think -- and you can recognize this from the original game, too -- that he has sort of this carefree, worry-free sort of air about him, and that, I think, provides a positive outlook for the player and relieves some of the stress that you get from more serious games."<br />

Here's the unfair thing about the <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/kid-icarus-uprising">Kid Icarus Uprising</a></em> trailer that we've posted after the break -- we got to see it running on a 3DS (in 3D) just yesterday, so we're pretty bored with all these silly two dimensional videos running on our computers. Sure, the game looks purty and features some pretty massive environments (especially considering it's a portable game), but it's not exactly running in <em>brain-melting 3D</em>. Oh, and if the model for Pit looks familiar, that's probably because it's nearly identical to his appearance in 2008's <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/super-smash-bros-brawl">Super Smash Bros. Brawl</a></em>. In case you were wondering, that's a <em>good thing</em>, folks.<br />

You remember Kid Icarus in <em>Smash Bros. Brawl</em>? That's what Kid Icarus looks like in his new game, <em>Kid Icarus Uprising</em> for the 3DS. Seriously, we were straight up shocked at how impressive the graphics are for a handheld title. Nintendo announced the title at this morning's presser as "Project Sora" before showing off the first trailer. We'll have more info (and the trailer) for you as soon as we can.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/06/15/kid-icarus-uprising-announced-for-3ds/">Kid Icarus: Uprising announced for 3DS</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 15 Jun 2010 13:03:00 EST. <div style="text-align: right;"><small>[<a href="http://www.vgmuseum.com/images/nes/01/icarus.html">VGMuseum</a>]</small></div>
If there's a <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/kid-icarus"><em>Kid Icarus</em></a> reboot in the works somewhere at Nintendo, <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/metroid-other-m"><em>Metroid: Other M</em></a> producer <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/03/12/interview-metroid-other-m-producer-yoshio-sakamoto/">Yoshio Sakamoto</a>, who worked on the original NES game, doesn't know anything about it. "I don't know personally about any project underway regarding <em>Kid Icarus,</em>" Sakamoto told <a href="http://kotaku.com/5491419/nintendo-would-happily-make-kid-icarus-wii">Kotaku</a>, "but if so many of those people are interested in it and really want to see it on the Wii, they should really speak up."<br />
<br />
It's not as simple as making a <em>Zelda</em> game with flight, apparently (that's our guess for what people want in a Wii <em>Kid Icarus </em>game). Sakamoto suggested that Nintendo has yet to hit upon the right design. "If we can find some sort of way to bring it to the Wii; a way to make the game for the Wii that makes sense, we would happily do so," he said. "But just keep in mind it may not be me making the game."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/03/12/nintendo-sakamoto-no-wii-kid-icarus-now-but-its-possible/">Nintendo's Sakamoto: No Wii Kid Icarus now, but possible</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 12 Mar 2010 17:31:00 EST. Factor 5 <a href="http://www.factor5.de/">officially announced</a> the closure of its US operations recently, concluding a story that feels like it's been just out of reach for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/22/rumor-factor-5-shuts-down/">half a year</a>. The developer had been having some rough times since the poignant failure of <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/lair">Lair</a></em>. Following that, there was its falling out with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/07/brash-layoffs-result-from-tough-economic-landscape/">Brash Entertainment</a> (which led to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/16/rumor-factor-5-cuts-37-jobs/">layoffs</a>), leaks of the <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/10/alleged-screens-and-video-from-factor-5s-canned-superman-game/">Superman</a></em> and <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/01/rumor-early-factor-5-kid-icarus-model-flies-out/">Kid Icarus</a></em> games, and, obviously, the closure of the studio.<br /><br />The bright side on this really dark tale is that Achim Moller, CEO of Factor 5 Germany, states the company has "partnered with both old and new friends in the industry who will reveal our upcoming projects over the next months." With <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/e3-2009">E3</a> visible in the smog-filled distance, perhaps we'll learn what the German-based developer is up to soon.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://kotaku.com/5253800/factor-5-officially-shuttered">Kotaku</a>, <a href="http://www.siliconera.com/2009/05/14/factor-5-inc-shuts-doors-wii-game-probably-still-coming/">Siliconera</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/14/factor-5-shuts-down-us-operations/">Factor 5 shuts down US operations</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 14 May 2009 13:15:00 EST. Fresh off the announcement of <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/25/gdc09-train-your-eyes-on-the-legend-of-zelda-spirit-tracks/">The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks</a> </em>at <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/gdc-09">GDC 2009</a>, Nintendo of America head honcho Reggie Fils-Aime had some interesting things to say about Nintendo's plans for this year's E3. "From Nintendo's perspective, we always go into E3 with a very high bar wanting to satisfy not only the core fans but also ourselves," he told <a href="http://www.gametrailers.com/gametrailerstv_player.php">GameTrailers TV</a>, teasing the reveal of a release date for the upcoming Zelda. "We haven't announced a launch date -- maybe we'll do that at E3."<br /><br />So, conclusive evidence of a brand new <em>Kid Icarus</em> game? Not quite. Though Keighley hammered "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/reggie-fils-aime">the Regginator</a>" for details on what exactly Nintendo would be bringing to the "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/17/esa-exec-e3-2009-to-bring-back-glamour-and-sizzle/">glamour and sizzle</a>" fest of this year's E3, the exec kept mum, saying, "Everyone wants to know what we're going to announce at E3 and my answer is, come to E3 and you'll see." Guess we're waiting 'til <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/27/big-three-lock-down-e3-media-briefing-dates-and-times/">June 2</a> like everyone else.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://play.tm/news/24144/fils-aime-promises-strong-e3-from-nintendo/">Play.tm</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/14/reggie-promises-a-better-e3-from-nintendo-this-year-again/">Reggie promises a better E3 from Nintendo this year ... again</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 14 Apr 2009 10:44:00 EST. Early last year, we saw some <a style="" href="http://nintendo.joystiq.com/2008/05/09/kid-icarus-to-smolder-with-generic-rage/">potential concept art</a> for a Wii <a href="http://nintendo.joystiq.com/2008/05/08/ign-pretty-much-confirms-kid-icarus/"><em>Kid Icarus </em>update</a> from developer Factor 5. Today, NeoGAFfer Shiggy posted what <em>may</em> be an early character render from "late 2007/early 2008." We've included the original Famicom Disk System version's character art for comparison.<br /><br />This is about as tenuous a rumor as there could possibly be because: A) We don't know if the Factor 5 <em>Kid Icarus</em> game was <em>ever</em> real. B) We don't know if this image or the previous concept art was actually from that hypothetical game. C) Even if it was real at some point, the game is most certainly dead now, due to the state of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/22/rumor-factor-5-shuts-down/">Factor 5.</a>
<ul>          </ul>
    We don't want to cast aspersions on Factor 5. They are responsible for true classics like the <a href="http://nintendo.joystiq.com/tag/turrican"><em>Turrican</em></a> series, as well as recent favorites like the <em>Rogue Squadron</em> games. But we won't lament the early demise of this (probably fake) interpretation of Pit. After all, he's got Solid Snake hair circa-<em>Metal Gear Solid</em> and he's wearing a sort of Ryu Hayabusa ninja outfit. We could only imagine this game's story involving Pit getting infected with a techno-organic super-virus codenamed E.G.G.P.L.A.N.T.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/01/rumor-early-factor-5-kid-icarus-model-flies-out/">Rumor: Early Factor 5 Kid Icarus model flies out</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 01 Feb 2009 20:00:00 EST. Was it fond memories? Was it a deeper connection with those who I love? Was it several containers of leftovers? Sure, I received a fair share of those, but the most significant thing I received this Thanksgiving was the flu. <br /><br /> I should have known. At least five different folks I saw over the course of the day claimed to be recovering from some form of the dreaded virus. Sure enough, by Friday evening I was sweating and freezing at once, aching all over, and debating on which end to point at the toilet (too much?). <br /><br /> Whenever I get sick, I tend to feel very isolated. While everyone else was out enjoying their four-day weekend, I was tethered to the bed. But it didn't take long for me to realize that I'm certainly not alone. Everyone gets sick sooner or later, and no one is truly immune. In fact, even our video game counterparts have their fair share of sicknesses that affect their goals. And thankfully, just like said counterparts, the infections are usually brief. Here's our Top 5 sicknesses to avoid. <br /><br /> </div> <br /> <div align="center"> </div> <div class="buttontext"> <div align="center"><a id="ninbutton" href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/01/top-5-5">NEXT &gt;&gt; </a></div> </div> <style type="text/css"> #ninbutton { border-style: solid; border-color: #000; border-width: 2px; background-color: #BBB; color: #000; text-decoration: none; width: 100px; text-align: center; padding: 2px 2px 2px 2px; margin: 2px 2px 2px 2px; } .buttontext { color: #000; text-decoration: none; font: bold 14pt Helvetica; } #ninbutton:hover { text-decoration: none; color: #BBB; background-color: #000; } </style> <center> </center><br /> <div style="border-top: 1px solid; padding-top: 5px;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/category/top-five/"><img hspace="4" border="1" align="left" vspace="4" alt="" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/07/top5_thumbnail_kd_20080702.jpg" /></a><em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/category/top-five/">The Top 5</a> is a weekly feature that provides us with a forum to share our opinions on various aspects of the video game culture, and provides you with a forum to tell us how wrong we are. Did you hear <em>Alan Wake </em>was confirmed to be shown at E3? How about <em>Kid Icarus Wii</em>? <em>Half-Life 2 Episode 3</em>? <em>Doom 4</em>? All these games have been listed on <a href="http://e3.net/">E3.net</a> under the <a href="http://e3.net/games">E3 Games</a> tab. There's just one problem ... E3.net isn't the official E3 page. (If you're curious, here's <a href="http://www.e3summit08.com/">the official site</a>.)<br /> <br /> Take note of the top banner, the bottom collection of links and all the latest news posts: yep, it's an <a href="http://www.ugo.com/">UGO</a> site. We've put in a call to their PR to see if there's any affiliation with the media summit, but that said, we doubt Microsoft, Nintendo, Valve or id Software would ever let these high-profile games be revealed so unceremoniously. Chalk this up as wishful thinking in the meantime.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/27/rumor-ugo-owned-e3-net-lists-kid-icarus-alan-wake-hl2-episod/">Rumor: UGO-owned E3.net lists Kid Icarus, Alan Wake, HL2: Episode 3</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 27 Jun 2008 18:00:00 EST. <p><br />Judging by her <a href="http://violetlunchell.deviantart.com/gallery/">gallery</a>, DeviantARTist VioletLunchell seems to specialize in these chibi-style plushes, and her latest piece of work, this Pit plushie, will resonate with anyone who found themselves turned off by the recent batch of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/09/kid-icarus-to-smolder-with-generic-rage/">alleged concept art</a> for the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/08/ign-pretty-much-confirms-kid-icarus/">alleged Wii game</a>.<br /></p>
<p>The artist herself confesses to "[not knowing] anything about video games," but she's done a fairly awesome job here -- this blogger would love one of these to place next to his numerous Pikmin plushes, but sadly this was a one-off commission piece. Probably a good thing, really. There comes a time when a man of 28 really has enough plushes.<br /><br />[Thanks, YaYaLuvsCupcakes!]</p>

Sure, this <a href="http://www.albotas.com/2008/05/pit-plushie/">Pit plushie</a> is adorable, but it has <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaia_%28Final_Fantasy_VII%29#Mako_as_an_energy_source">Mako eyes</a>, and we're afraid the negative effects Mr. <em>Kid Icarus</em> has had from flying too close to Shinra. For a game that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/08/kid-icarus-on-wii-indirectly-revealed-by-ign/">hasn't even been formally announced</a>, there sure seems to be a lot of information circulating about the Wiicreation of the celestial NES action-platformer, <em>Kid Icarus</em>. For instance, Kombo.com (not to be confused with <a href="http://www.zombo.com/">Zombo.com</a>) <a href="http://wii.kombo.com/article.php?artid=11895#">recently posted a veritable cornucopia of concept art</a> for the rumored title, as well as some heretofore unannounced deets. Apparently, Pit has been "cursed for thousands of years for a crime" and has <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fallen_angel">become a fallen angel</a> -- those mature themes seem to resonate through the conceptual drawings, available <a href="http://wii.kombo.com/article.php?artid=11895#">on Kombo's site</a>.<br /><br />We're not sure if this new media is legit, but <a href="http://wii.kombo.com/article.php?artid=11331">Kombo did break the rumor that Factor 5 was working on an <em>Icarus</em></a> title in late January. Perhaps they do indeed have an inside source -- though it's just as likely that their early plot details could have rolled off their own forked tongues. <a href="http://wii.kombo.com/article.php?artid=11895#">Check out the images</a>, and judge for yourself.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/11/rumor-kid-icarus-wii-details-screenshots-revealed/">Rumor: Kid Icarus Wii details, concept art revealed</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 11 May 2008 17:00:00 EST. Kombo has posted a gallery of what they <em>say</em> is early concept art for Factor 5's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/08/ign-pretty-much-confirms-kid-icarus/"><em>Kid Icarus</em></a> game. The styles vary from fantasy cover art to <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bruce_Timm">Bruce Timm</a>-style minimalism, but they all have one thing in common: Pit is a troubled young man. This fits with the proposed game pitch, in which Pit is "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/media/2008/05/picardfacepalm050908.jpg">cursed for thousands of years and becomes a fallen angel.</a>" He bears a tattoo on his arm that details his crime. Awesome.<br /> <br /> We hope this is fake, or not what Factor 5 (or whoever the real developer is) goes with. It's not even a matter of nostalgia: we need <em>more</em> weird flying platformers about eggplant wizards and <em>fewer</em> games about <a href="http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2004/12/03/">brooding antiheroes</a>. We don't need <em>Man Icarus. </em><br /> <br /> [Via <a href="http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=292764">NeoGAF</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/09/kid-icarus-to-smolder-with-generic-rage/">Kid Icarus to smolder with generic rage?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 09 May 2008 14:15:00 EST. <br />There's a big game coming for the Wii this holiday -- we know this because Reggie <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/17/reggie-big-wii-title-coming-this-holiday-revealed-during-e3/">said so</a> -- and IGN's Matt <strike>Cassa</strike> <strike>Casamasi</strike> C. has virtually confirmed what most had anticipated: it's <em>Kid Icarus</em>. Speaking on IGN's most recent Nintendo Voice Chat podcast, Casamassina blurted: "Of course [Nintendo is] going to have some E3 surprises. You know, <em>Kid Icarus</em>, for crying out loud, how many times do we have to say <em>Kid Icarus</em>? <em>Kid Icarus</em> is coming for crying out loud."<br /><br />So there you go -- can't say we're hugely surprised to hear of Pit's return, but that doesn't mean we're looking forward to it any less. Casamassina refused to reveal <em>who</em> was behind it, but we hear the folks at Retro are currently kicking back and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/24/three-retro-studios-staffers-escape-save-etecoons-on-the-way-ou/">taking a break</a> from the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/metroid"><em>Metroid</em></a> universe ... *<br /><br />* Wanton speculation.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/08/kid-icarus-on-wii-indirectly-revealed-by-ign/">Joystiq</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/08/ign-pretty-much-confirms-kid-icarus/">IGN pretty much confirms Kid Icarus</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 08 May 2008 17:00:00 EST. When fans debate which of their plentiful wells Nintendo will be returning to for their next big title, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/KidIcarus/">Kid Icarus</a></em> is always a popular suspicion. Now, IGN's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=Matt%20Casamassina">Matt Casamassina</a> has basically confirmed that it's on the way to Wii. On <a href="http://wii.ign.com/articles/870/870229p1.html">episode 7 of the IGN Nintendo Voice Chat</a> podcast Casamassina says, "Of course [Nintendo is] going to have some E3 surprises. You know, <em>Kid Icarus</em>, for crying out loud, how many times do we have to say <em>Kid Icarus</em>? <em>Kid Icarus</em> is coming for crying out loud." When a co-host asks if he wants to reveal the developer he responds "I think we've confirmed it a billion times but no, I'm not going to say it officially."<br /><br />Adding more fuel to the fire <a href="http://wii.ign.com/articles/871/871734p1.html">on this week's show</a> Casamassina said "<em>Kid Icarus</em>, that's another one that I'm really anticipating just because I love the franchise and I'm sure that the developer will make a really pretty game." It looks like we'll have to wait for July to hear anything official from Nintendo but, if Casamassina is to be believed (we've asked him for further clarification), a Wii version of Kid Icarus seems to be all but a done deal.<br /><br />[Thanks to Jeff for the heads up.]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/08/kid-icarus-on-wii-indirectly-revealed-by-ign/">Kid Icarus on Wii indirectly revealed by IGN</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 08 May 2008 12:29:00 EST. <br />Thanks to its largely flat surface, the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/nes">NES</a> doubles up as an ideal canvas for those wishing to spruce up their consoles with a custom paint job. Of course, you also need <em>artistic ability</em>, which is where we fail hideously, and eBay user hellokitty11111111111 (yes) excels.<br /><br />Well, "excels" most of the time, anyway. The quality of these mods does vary a <em>little </em>-- we're not big fans of the <em>Kid Icarus</em> design -- but we do absolutely <em>love</em> the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/20/mother-3-translation-seven-months-away/"><em>Earthbound</em></a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/super+mario+bros/"><em>Super Mario Bros. 3</em></a>, and (highly <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/21/vc-monday-madness-river-city-ransom-and-some-other-game/">topical</a>) <a href="http://cgi.ebay.com/Custom-Painted-Nintendo-Game-System-River-City-Ransom_W0QQitemZ270118394946QQihZ017QQcategoryZ62054QQtcZphotoQQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1713.m153.l1262"><em>River City Ransom</em></a> examples. Brawl,</em> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/20/ign-teases-kid-icarus/">rumors</a> of a new <em>Kid Icarus</em> game on Wii have been bountiful (mostly due to one enthusiastic rumormonger at IGN) and met with glee. We have to wonder: since Nintendo no longer puts much interest in it, what is it that draws you guys to the idea of a sequel to <em>Metroid</em>'s awkward cousin? <br /><br />Do you want some kind of modern 3D game set in a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/03/dojo-update-the-story-of-pit/">"serious"</a> (like Pit's current appearance) <em>Kid Icarus </em>universe, or do you want the vertical scrolling, eggplant-dodging, hammer-collecting NES game back with new graphics, enemies, and levels? Is it the setting or the gameplay? Or is it just that it's <em>a Nintendo franchise?</em> We'd at least like to hear the <em>music</em> in another game.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/21/wii-warm-up-comeback-kid/">Wii Warm Up: Comeback Kid</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 21 Mar 2008 09:00:00 EST. Pit's feature role in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Smash-Bros-Brawl"><em>Super Smash Bros. Brawl</em></a> could be a precursor to the <em>Kid Icarus </em>franchise's triumphant resurrection, or at least IGN seems to think so. On their <a href="http://wii.ign.com/articles/860/860322p1.html">latest Nintendo Voice Chat podcast</a>, Matt Casamassina and the gang discuss Reggie's recent comments about a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/16/reggie-holiday-blockbuster-for-the-wii-to-be-revealed-at-e3/">holiday blockbuster to be announced at E3</a>, and speculate that it could be the new <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/kid-icarus"><em>Kid Icarus</em></a> that they "know" is in the works.<br /><br />Now, how Casassamassassassina and crew can be so absolutely sure that <em>Kid Icarus</em> is Wii-bound is beyond us. We'll personally apply a liberal amount of skeptical sauce to this story, although it's also worth mentioning that the IGN team actually hopes Nintendo's E3 reveal <em>isn't</em> the <em>Kid Icarus</em> game they magically already know about. We'll be content either way, thanks.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.nintendowiifanboy.com/2008/03/20/ign-teases-kid-icarus/">Wii Fanboy</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/21/rumor-kid-icarus-making-a-comeback/">Rumor: Kid Icarus making a comeback</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 21 Mar 2008 04:30:00 EST. At about the 12:30 mark in the March 18th show, the group turns to Reggie's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/17/reggie-big-wii-title-coming-this-holiday-revealed-during-e3/">mysterious E3 surprise</a>. "Could be <em>Kid Icarus,</em>" Matt Casamassina said, "We've already chatted about that -- don't know if it's going to be that. We <em>do</em> know that that game exists."<br /><br />Here, Matt seems to be referring to the previous week's <a href="http://wii.ign.com/articles/858/858352p1.html">Wii-k in Review</a> (ugh), in which he said that <em>Kid Icarus</em> would "absolutely" be on the Wii in 2008. Any sources? Of course not! "The rumors are out there," he said. Is he using his own rumor from a previous week as confirmation? <br /><br />We wouldn't be surprised about a <em>Kid Icarus</em> game at this point, if only because people are so crazy about the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/20/rumor-factor-5-developing-kid-icarus-on-the-wii/">rumor</a> now. But we'll just say that Nintendo <em>does not</em> care about the franchise, or there would have been a third game by now. That means that they would <em>undoubtedly</em> be outsourcing it -- to Factor 5 or someone else.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/20/ign-teases-kid-icarus/">IGN teases Kid Icarus</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 20 Mar 2008 16:00:00 EST. <br /><em>Do not adjust your monitor</em>. This is still the Nintendo Wii Fanboy Dojo update you know and love, even if today's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/dojo">dojo</a> announcement falls squarely in the region of "<em>Dubya. Tee. Eff.</em>"<br /><br />Basically, <em>Brawl </em>will be shipping to stores with several "Masterpieces," disc-based trial versions of Virtual Console games. There's nothing too obscure in the selection revealed so far (<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/super-mario-bros"><em>Super Mario Bros.</em></a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/17/dojo-update-ice-climbers-and-the-golden-hammer/"><em>Ice Climber</em></a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/zelda"><em>The Legend of Zelda</em></a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/20/rumor-factor-5-developing-kid-icarus-on-the-wii/"><em>Kid Icarus</em></a>, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kirby%27s_Adventure"><em>Kirby's Adventure</em></a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/20/vc-monday-madness-super-metroid-shinobi-iii-and-neutopia/"><em>Super Metroid</em></a>, and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/02/vc-monday-madness-star-fox-64-and-more/"><em>Star Fox 64</em></a>), but Sakurai has promised that more titles are on the way. Obviously, because they're trial versions, you can only play them for a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/gallery/ssbb-gallery-three/606478/">limited time</a> (though that may not deter <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/24/super-mario-bros-in-less-time-than-it-takes-to-warm-up-a-lean-c/">some people</a>).<br /><br />You can view this feature in two ways, we suppose. Some will see it as a fitting tribute to the greatest videogame company of all time. Others might decipher this as a cynical piece of free advertising for the Virtual Console. As for us, we're just happy that new or younger players will be getting an insight into Nintendo's outstanding body of work. Just don't look at the games Japan is <a href="http://www.smashbros.com/jp/gamemode/various/various23.html">getting</a>. According to <a href="http://wii.kombo.com/article.php?artid=11331">Kombo</a>, though, a credible source claims that the game will be a new <span style="font-style: italic;">Kid Icaru</span>s title. The rumor also states that Factor 5 will not be using their GameCube graphics engine, and instead will be developing the game from the ground up.<br /><br />With Pit being a playable character in <span style="font-style: italic;">Brawl</span> (which is likely to increase hype for the <span style="font-style: italic;">Kid Icarus</span> franchise), we wouldn't be surprised if this rumor turned out to be true. Since it <span style="font-style: italic;">is</span> only a rumor though, be sure to take your daily dose of salt with it, perhaps a grain or two.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://gonintendo.com/?p=33739">GoNintendo</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/20/rumor-factor-5-developing-kid-icarus-on-the-wii/">Rumor: Factor 5 developing Kid Icarus on the Wii</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 20 Jan 2008 15:00:00 EST. You don't have to take our word for it! <span style="font-style: italic;">Dun-un, dun!</span><br /><br />As expected, their list isn't perfect -- if it were, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/rivercityransom"><span style="font-style: italic;">River City Ransom</span></a> would occupy at least seven of the spots, leaving just enough room for <span style="font-style: italic;">Super Mario Bros. 3</span>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/megaman"><span style="font-style: italic;">Mega Man 2</span></a>, and an emergency copy of <span style="font-style: italic;">River City Ransom</span>. But it would be naive to think that any collection of NES games with "Top <span style="font-style: italic;">anything</span>" written in proximity would satisfy everyone, unless, of course, it was a list of <span style="font-style: italic;">Top Gun</span> titles (all two of them). So feel free to comment with your own selection of "Absolutely Best NES Games Ever."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/17/somebodys-top-ten-nes-games/">Somebody's top ten NES games</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 17 Oct 2007 18:00:00 EST.
