Latest news from the PlayStation Day 2008 event in London drops a release date for Killzone 2. Looks like the game has been pinned down for a February 2009 release -- at least for Europe anyhow. That's a little later than we had hoped, but it's all well that it is coming. Just try not to think about it being a year off.
Killzone 2 out February 2009 originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 06 May 2008 11:45:00 EST. According to VideoGamer.com, who've apparently gotten hold of a Sony UK release schedule, three big PS3 exclusives will be releasing this coming Fall in the British Isles. Killzone 2 and LittleBigPlanet should show up on our beloved console sometime in September, while Resistance 2 caps the trifecta for an expected November release. Sony confirmed that these dates are correct.

Great. Now, we just need to wait for SCEA to give us the heads up on these games and their release dates over here across the Atlantic. Hopefully, North American dates won't be any different. If these games do continue on schedule and actually get released by Fall, then it's safe to say that PS3 owners will be very happy gamers indeed.

[Via Joystiq]
Killzone 2, LittleBigPlanet, Resistance 2, gets UK release window originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 26 Mar 2008 15:45:00 EST. Each week Jeff Engel and Geoff Brooks contribute Counting Rupees, a column on the business behind gaming:

Apparently, 2008 is the year of the PS3. After what most consider a very shaky first year, the media is abuzz with a comeback for the company that was once king of consoles. EGM's March issue proudly proclaims on its cover that it's "The Revenge of the PS3". EDGE's December issue was entitled "The Empire Strikes Back" and even Joystiq's PS3 Fanboy has given us 10 reasons why the PS3 is back in the swing of things. Some analysts have proclaimed that the PS3 will do at least as well as the 360 in 2008, and others have the PS3 edging out the 360 by 2010 or even the Wii by 2011. Clearly, everyone is pointing to 2008 being a turning point of sorts for the Cell-powered beast. But is it actually true?

Let's focus on, at least initially, Sony's battle against the 360. Certainly, the PS3 has a lot of things going for it. Blu-ray has officially won the next-gen DVD war; upcoming games, such as Metal Gear Solid 4, Killzone 2, and LittleBigPlanet show tremendous potential; and it has seemingly found a price point that people are willing to pay (as they did originally for the 360). In the US, at least so far this year, Sony has managed to outsell the 360 according to January and February NPD figures. But will it be enough?
Continue reading Counting Rupees: The year of the PS3

Counting Rupees: The year of the PS3 originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 20 Mar 2008 21:00:00 EST. We're afraid your secret wish for Go! Team fueled romps through velvety, user-submitted playgrounds isn't going to be fulfilled for quite some time -- neither will your desire to play the highly anticipated sequel to the original "Halo Killer". According to a recent post on Three Speech (a "semi official" Playstation blog), both LittleBigPlanet and Killzone 2 aren't going to see the light of day until September or October of next year. While an official due date for Killzone 2 hasn't been nailed down yet, this new information contradicts the last release date we heard for LittleBigPlanet, which was "early 2008."

We're holding out hope that these new schedules for big black's two potential killer apps are pure conjecture, but considering Three Speech's partnership with Sony, we're guessing that they know something that we don't; like, for instance, which dark, secret pastes give Phil Harrison's dome its intoxicating sheen.

[Via 1UP]
Rumor: Killzone 2 and LittleBigPlanet coming Fall 2008 originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 15 Dec 2007 12:00:00 EST. Even virtual worlds need to visit the powder room before parading in public. The practice of 'touching up' is something our shallow, image-conscious society accepts (heck, we expect it!), so long as the object doesn't stray too far from our idealized imaginations. So when Guerrilla Games rolled out a new batch of Killzone 2 screens, captured from this year's E3 demo, fans noticed the images looked a little too good to be true, drawing obvious connections to Killzone's infamous E3 2005 debut trailer, which substituted actual game content with pre-rendered 'target' video.

Guerrilla QA manager Seb Downie joined the discussion on the PlayStation Forums, admitting, "[The screenshots] are only the tiniest bit touched up ... there was a little bit of colour-correction done and some minor polish, but nothing major." The comparison image above, also posted in the discussion (via PSU), seems to corroborate Downie's admission, revealing sharper colors and deeper contrasts in the 'doctored' screen on the right (effects that seem within the limits of standard display settings; i.e., a television could be capable of displaying both the dull and stylized versions of this scene by tinkering with its display settings). Also, the "original" version of the image is a frame snagged directly from video, so it's subject to a certain amount of blurring that's not necessarily an accurate depiction of gameplay frozen in that instant. In any case, how can a screenshot ever tell the truth? Downie concludes that Killzone 2 simply "looks better in motion."
Killzone 2 dev admits screenshots 'touched up' originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 10 Dec 2007 13:10:00 EST. We'll list out what was discovered below.

The politically correct term for the release date right now is "2008".

While the demo is pretty awesome, it's just one level. Incomplete, at that, with no streaming technology implemented yet.

There will be an online beta at some point (no time soon, we're sure) but there will also be links to the official Killzone website and integration into Home to keep us busy until that time comes.

After the infamous 2005 trailer, GG was pretty unsure of if they could actually pull off those graphics, but the recent amount of press for the true game has bolstered their belief that they have, in fact, come quite close to that original trailer and are very proud of that. We are too!

No word yet on user-generated content.

They refuse to compare their game to Halo 3 because the two games are just that -- two games. They're different in play style and artistic direction. They feel it's more important to improve on what was lackluster in the first Killzone than try to "beat" some other game.

In addition to all this, Guerilla Games is trying to keep Killzone 2 heads and shoulders above the original in the field of gameplay -- busting out alternate routes, different weapons for different types of gameplay, and an all-around greater scope will prove to keep the game worth playing after that first completion. We don't know when we'll hear from these guys again, so let's just let them get crackin' on the game for a while, okay?
Guerilla Games interrogated on all things Killzone 2 originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 25 Aug 2007 23:30:00 EST. The above video is incredibly long, as you could have probably deduced from our subject line -- about 25 minutes. You get a little more backstory into the game, but the real impressive part of this alpha build footage is the freezing of the camera and getting to check out the level the same way the devs get to look at it. This isn't really a gameplay demo, but more of a showing of what's behind the curtain and we greatly appreciate it. We can't wait to see this game get further along production, possibly to the point of a demo. That would be swell, Guerrila Games!
Straight from Leipzig, the developers at Guerrilla demonstrated some of the gameplay features of the highly anticipated PS3 first person shooter, Killzone 2. While the game is mostly known for its graphics technology, gamers should be most curious about the way the game plays. Certainly, is the gameplay as advanced as the way it looks? How did Guerrilla pull of its distinctive "Killzone look?" Their Develop presentation was all about "deferred rendering," a process which adds Hollywood-quality visual effects to the images rendered by the PS3. Extensive post-process effects allowed the team to create "highly dynamic lighting in environments" with "complex geometry" and "MSAA" -- whatever that is.

Those with technical know-how will appreciate the Develop presentation the team delivered, which goes into some intricate detail about how much SPU power is being used by the game. Even with already-impressive results, the team has a long way to go. In fact, there are still "a lot of features planned," such as: ambient occlusion, contact shadows, shadows on transparent geometry, more efficient anti-aliasing, and dynamic radiosity.

[Thanks, sheppy!]
Those are some big words to describe an incomplete game! If only that were all, but the BBC continues its praise by assuring PS3 fans that Killzone 2 looks like something you'd only see on a high-end PC.

Not everything was rosy, though. The BBC criticized the incomplete build, stating the "game mechanics of the level I saw are not particularly innovative," and that overall "Killzone 2 is an archetypal shooter - a futuristic action title that draws on the symbolism of World War II to create a sense of familiarity." Throwing grenades still needs some work, and the hyper-realistic violence will probably spark more debate about the worn-out violence-in-videogames stance. Since playability of your title was a requirement for getting nominated, Hulst is particularly flattered.

About all that hype and expectation, Hulst commented that while the 2005 E3 trailer was ambitious, it remained achievable. They fully intend to live up to the promise of the original trailer and will work on the game until they feel it's ready for the public. Since they got an award that only playable games should have been considered for, we also think they're moving on the right track. The final product will undoubtedly look far superior to even the demo we saw at E3 this year.
Game Critics reward Killzone 2 for graphics, Guerrila devs blush originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 04 Aug 2007 16:00:00 EST. If the downloadable E3 trailer of Killzone 2 from the PS Store wasn't enough to satisfy, we've got some more in-game footage detailing parts of the demo we weren't able to see. Sure, there's a lot of button-pushing and tower-shooting, but to think about all that's happening on screen at any single moment is pretty awe-inspiring. Much more happening on these battlefields than, say, in narrow corridors. An unbelievable and completely improbable feat of gaming technology, quickly debunked as rubbish. This year, however, Sony returned with not only a real time demonstration of Killzone 2, but a playable tour as well. Before E3 had even begun, we knew that nothing could possibly prevent the tears, bitter or no, of the fiercely devoted.

With an uneasy hand, we present the collapsing of the universe: GameVideos' Killzone 2 comparison. The original CGI fest going toe-to-toe with the real deal. It's not entirely fair, however, as the real time video tends to feature the marines flying around for too long, but that won't stop the endless debates.

[Update - For those who just can't get enough, GameTrailers also released a comparison of their own, in high-def no less.]
Killzone 2 versus Killzone 2: video comparison originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 11 Jul 2007 23:45:00 EST. Sony released a new Q&A with the Killzone 2 developers at last night's event. The Sony-published interview doesn't provide the most critical look at the game's development, but nonetheless offers a new look at this hotly anticipated game.

How big is the team currently at Guerrilla?

Please describe the work atmosphere at Guerrilla.
It's a very creative environment, with a great international workforce. We have over 20 different nationalities inside the studio.

What is the premise of Killzone 2?
Armored soldiers are yelling frantically, as the chaotic sounds of a war zone fill the jam-packed auditorium. Sound familiar? It's meant to be. The opening seconds of the new Killzone presentation bring to life the infamous E3 trailer from 2005 -- only this time, it's in real-time.

Certainly, the question on everyone's mind is: does it look as good as the notorious it's-not-CG-we-swear trailer from 2005? In many ways, the visual fidelity of the updated presentation matches the highly polished look of the debut trailer. Beautiful volumetric smoke filled the screen, and the characters were alive with animation. Motion blur was used to great effect, adding a subtle hint of realism (unlike the over-the-top blur of Crysis.) However, unlike the deceptive E3 presentation of yore, this one had an aura of believability. A critical eye could note a few rough jagged edges, and textures that are a far cry away from Hollywood renders. In particular, the floor textures were no short of terrible. The facial animation system could certainly use a bit more work as well. Were we a little disappointed to notice such identifiable indicators of visual flaws so quickly? Certainly. However, in spite of all the shortcomings within the game, there's no denying that Killzone 2 provides a visual feast that effectively demonstrates the technical prowess of the PlayStation 3.

Gallery: Killzone 2

Continue reading Killzone 2 at E3, revisited

Killzone 2 at E3, revisited originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 11 Jul 2007 04:00:00 EST.
After a particularly long engagement, this is the first real, really real, actual screen of Killzone 2 gameplay. It appeared in a USA Today story in which the game was described by Sony's Ron Eagle as "a hardware mover." Hey! It's going to be good too? We were just happy it existed.

We know how you're feeling, we had a hard time believing it too. Finally? After <strike>all</strike> both these years? But when someone from the dev team hops on to the official PlayStation forums to vouch for it, we take notice. Seb Downie, QA Manager for Guerrilla Games, does say that it's "a bit early" though, so keep that in mind. We'll hopefully see more of the game tonight (remember this invite?), so we'll keep you posted.

Update: According to BitFood, a brightness adjustment to the image reveals a brick wall in the background, indicating that the enemy posed is just a poster. We'll leave the speculation up to you.

As if you didn't know already, tonight is the Killzone 2 event at E3. As if it wasn't hyped enough, Sony has released an in-game screenshot from the demo that our journalist pals (including our own Andrew Yoon) will be playing tonight.

The USAToday website has an article about four 'show stealing games,' with a little more info about Killzone 2 and the full res image can be found on Threespeech. Screenshots (well, singular) are all well and good, but we really want to see the game in motion. Hopefully there'll be footage galore after the press event this evening.

There's a chance we may be seeing a Killzone 2 release as early as September. Game Planets is reporting that the latest issue of Power Unlimited magazine states that "expectations for the PlayStation 3 premier shooter are high, and Sony aims to release Killzone 2 during September."

While we're going to reserve judgement for now, we wouldn't be surprised if this was true. We first got a glimpse of the game two years ago and, judging from the way Sony is handling the Killzone 2 presentation at E3, they must have something spectacular to show us now. A pre-Halo 3 release would also do the game a great deal of good, especially if its as groundbreaking as they say.

We'll keep you updated as and when any developments occur.
We love receiving mysterious packages at Joystiq HQ and are particularly enamored by the ones that don't violently explode upon their opening. The card pictured above matches the latter description, though it seems to indicate that demolition and destruction is nevertheless in our near future. The card glibly invites its recipient to attend a unique two and a half hour Sony event on the evening of July 10th, just as Min-E3 gets underway.

Unless Sony has taken a very interesting approach to promoting the next SingStar, the disagreeable fellow on the card implies that Killzone 2 will be the event's focus. Considering the event's length and the game's brief showing at GDC, a playable version of the anticipated shooter seems increasingly likely to appear. Once we finally see whether or not it lives up to the infamous 2005 prerendered trailer graphically, we can move on to more pertinent questions like, "Is it any fun?" We suspect we'll have an answer next month.
Sony E3 invite hints at Killzone 2 unveiling originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 25 Jun 2007 17:05:00 EST. Who to trust? It's a tough call, since we reported on a pretty lofty rumor stating that a demo for the new game may just make an appearance at the Game Developer's Conference. After going over the two linked stories above, you may think that, indeed, IGN has the correct story. They spoke with Sony, after all, right? But, CVG has "well-placed sources!" This is turning into more and more of a big deal, but it really shouldn't. If it's there, neat. If not, well, damn.

Now is the time for all of the beautiful readers out there to think about the two conflicting ideas presented here and discuss them in a rational, logical, adult manner. Personally, I'd like to believe the game will still make an appearance. And like a rifle butt to the ocular cavity, the spark of hope in our eyes was handily extinguished with SCEA Manager, Ryan Bowling telling IGN, "No, Killzone won't be [at] GDC at all." Really? The game was a no-show at both E3 and TGS last year; in fact, the only thing we've heard (besides rumors) following the title's infamous E3 2005 debut is that it's the "biggest multimedia project in Dutch history." So, if that rumored Killzone 2 demo won't be making an appearance at GDC after all, and E3 is gone, when will it crawl out of the foxhole it's been hiding in for the last two years? Says Bowling, "The time for that game is coming and we'll have new information about it in the future, but not at GDC."

[Thanks, Nav]
Sony: 'Killzone won't be [at] GDC at all' originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 08 Feb 2007 19:15:00 EST. Was it supposed to be funny? Doubt it, but movies where the point is to get as many big stars as possible (Ocean's Eleven, Twelve, Thirteen) so they can draw in as many "admirers" as possible are just silly. Luckily, Face/Off just had two or so big celeb names. I digress. Over at 1up, there's an interesting blog entry discussing Sony's answer to the Halo 3 beta arriving soon.

The answer? According to Luke Smith, Sony will respond to the beta even before it's released -- the Game Developer's Conference. Phil Harrison is one of the keynotes (all the keynoters are actually very important... I mean, Miyamoto? Awesome.) and what better way to rise up to the Bungie challenge than announce a playable Killzone 2 demo? The game's rumored to be very far along in development, so why not? But please, don't call it a Halo-killer. That term is really annoying. But if this speculation turns out to be true, Killzone 2 will inevitably have that phrase tacked onto it.
RUMOR: Killzone 2 demo to Face/Off against Halo 3 beta? originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 07 Feb 2007 10:00:00 EST. Smith's reasoning descends from a string of rumors, which suggest that Killzone disappeared, in part, to direct the spotlight on Resistance. The rumors also indicate that while on the down-low, Guerilla has transformed its "Halo-killer" from a pre-rendered heartthrob into a developed game; some rumorists even suspect that Killzone has been playable online for nearly a year.

Smith points to Phil Harrison's GDC keynote address as an opportunity for Sony to steal (in typical from-out-of-nowhere fashion) some mindshare away from Microsoft and the mid-March Halo beta test by dropping *GASP* the Killzone 2 <strike>bomb</strike> demo! Never mind that the Killzone franchise has yet to deliver a noteworthy game; is the first half of 2007 really gonna be defined by a clash between a beta test and purported demo? If I'm a developer not working for Bungie or Guerilla, I'm about ready to hire a new PR agency -- that, or beg Sony to let my game piggyback on the Killzone demo's shoulders.

Update: In response to comments that Killzone: Liberation (PSP) is "very good" or has "gotten great scores all around" (etc...), we simply offer up evidence that the title ranks 56th among current PSP games (233 in all) listed in score order. While we respect the opinions of those who enjoy the game, generally speaking, we maintain that Liberation is hardly noteworthy beyond its tie to the ridiculously over-hyped Killzone franchise.
Rumor: Killzone 2 demo before Halo 3 beta originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 06 Feb 2007 11:45:00 EST. Later down the line, it turned out those "in-game" shots were just CGI mock-ups; target renders they're called. Now Sony is telling us those CGI mock-ups are inferior compared to the REAL Killzone 2. O RLY?

Phil Harrison, Sony CEO and game commenter extraordinaire, made some bold claims in the most recent issue of OPM (reprinted at Sony's semi-official blog, ThreeSpeech); supposedly, KZ2 has "some elements [that] already exceed the trailer." Excuse us, Mr. Harrison, but we'll wait until we see a working game this time.

Given just how good Gears of War looks, pumping something out that looks like the Killzone 2 E3 trailer is possible. However, given Sony's history on this particular title, we're less inclined to believe 'em until we (or someone else we can all trust) actually plays the real thing.

Actual Killzone 2 better than trailer? originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 14 Nov 2006 09:55:00 EST.
When Sony showed the now-infamous Killzone 2 trailer at E3 2005 I got goosebumps all over. Though we're all aware now that the trailer was merely CGI flimflammery, the memory still haunts those of us lucky enough to experience it in that darkened theater with sound so rich and deep it gave us a heart massage.

Therefore, it's with no small disappointment that we report that Killzone 2 remains AWOL. After mysteriously disappearing from the E3 2006 lineup, Killzone 2 failed to show up at TGS.

Some would suggest that this isn't a big deal as the Japanese gamer doesn't dig FPS games all that much. That excuse doesn't explain the huge presence of Resistance: Fall of Man in Sony's TGS booth. What gives?

TGS: Killzone 2, WRU?! originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 23 Sep 2006 05:29:00 EST.
