"After reading the e-book, players will have a better understanding of BioShock Infinite's world, the struggle between its factions, and the motivations of key characters, like rebel leader Daisy Fitzroy, without spoiling the mysteries of BioShock Infinite," Irrational's Joe Fielder, who wrote the book with creative director Ken Levine, explained in the announcement.

The ebook will be released February 12 for Kindle, priced at $2.99. Amazon pre-orders of BioShock Infinite will be entitled to a free copy. After what seems like an eternity, Amazon has finally taken the wraps off of its long-rumored tablet. Introducing the Kindle Fire, a 7-inch Android-powered tablet that, at $199, is less than half the price of the iPad, not to mention the rest of the Android tablet competition. The Kindle Fire will have its own "easy-to-use" interface and, since Amazon happens to have its own Android Appstore, finding apps for the device should, ostensibly, not be a problem. For example, as seen in the image above, the Kindle Fire will have Angry Birds which, if our math is accurate, should ensure millions of buyers.

Unlike its more expensive brethren, the Kindle Fire does without an embedded camera, microphone, or 3G access. The Wi-Fi only device will come with a 30-day free trial of the normally $79-a-year Amazon Prime, which will nab customers not only free two-day shipping but also unlimited streaming video from Amazon's video service. [Update: After the break, the Kindle Fire ad. If you're paying attention, you may even spot the grossly addictive Cut the Rope in there somewhere. Yup, it's a tablet!]
Rather than watching your grandma mouth along the words to Lee Greenwood's timeless Americana classic "God Bless the USA" one more time this Independence Day, wouldn't you rather giver her a run for the money in one of the many Hasbro Family Game Night games? EA's offering just such a possibility, putting nine of its Hasbro titles on XBL up for sale at 50 percent off, and offering a swath of deals on other platforms on July 4th.

Perhaps you were looking to freedom-ize the necromorphs of Dead Space on iPad during your independence celebration? That's also on sale for .99 cents, alongside a handful of other iOS titles. And if you're more of the PC type, everything from Mass Effect 2 ($12) to Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit ($18) is marked down on Origin.
Continue reading EA celebrates Independence Day with a massive sale

EA celebrates Independence Day with a massive sale originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 01 Jul 2011 13:00:00 EST. EA COO John Schappert took to the airwaves during his company's Q3 earnings call to elaborate on the claim that Electronic Arts was the "#1 publisher in the Apple App Store for both iPhone and iPad and #1 on Microsoft Windows Phone 7." Some of you may remember EA's massive holiday-season sale in which it dropped the price on many of its apps to just a dollar; what you may not have known is that Apple freezes the charts every holiday season, and EA timed its price drops perfectly. Its apps shot up the listings and remained in the Top 25 Paid Apps while the App Store charts were frozen; meanwhile, the competition was unable to respond with lower prices and, even if it could, sales successes wouldn't be reflected on the charts.

"In December, a well-timed promotion of our iPhone and iPad games resulted in an unprecedented share and chart position for our titles," Schappert said. "The day after Christmas, the millions who were activating their new devices, EA held 14 of the top 25 paid apps for the iPhone and 15 of the top 25 paid apps for the iPad. Needless to say we had a record-breaking quarter on iOS." For EA, "each of these devices represents a new platform, a new revenue stream, and millions of new consumers." Schappert also called attention to the success seen in the Kindle Store, where EA's "Scrabble game outsold all books to become the #1 selling download in the Kindle Store from Christmas to New Year's." And of course, "Angry Birds was the #1 selling game for both iPhone and iPad in 2010" - while EA may not own the rights to the franchise itself, it does own the original iOS publisher Chillingo.

With its plan (crafty timing and all!) in place, perhaps the sting of losing Adam Sussman - EA's mobile veep, credited with pushing the publisher's iOS strategy - to Disney Interactive last week won't last long. Now how about a $0.99 sale on the excellent Dead Space?

EA boasts 'record-breaking quarter on iOS' thanks to 'well-timed' holiday promotion originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 01 Feb 2011 20:15:00 EST. We're ... we're just so proud of all the would-be e-readers. Following known non-book Scrabble's ascent to the top of the Kindle sales charts, we learn from Ars Technica that a handful of gaming entrepreneurs have brought Zork I, II, III and Mini-Zork to the Kindle and other e-readers.
While an e-reader's typically nubby keyboard might not be the best form of input for an interactive novel like this, we're strong supporters of any innovation that allows us to use our books to play video games. One hang-up, though -- can't we get a game on the Kindle that doesn't require so much reading?
> Text adventures come to Kindle, other e-readers originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 09 Oct 2010 04:45:00 EST. As fervent opponents of books and all they stand for, we're delighted to report the biggest thing on Amazon's Kindle e-book reader isn't a book at all, but rather EA's port of Scrabble, which is topping the paid charts. Hey, books? Just give it up already, OK? You're embarrassing yourselves.
Suck it, reading: EA's Scrabble is a hit on Kindle originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 30 Sep 2010 01:00:00 EST. In a post on his personal blog announcing the career change, Vrignaud says he "can't really talk about details at this point," but adds that "it'll become pretty evident soon enough ... and you all know where my passions lie." Considering Vrignaud's recent work on bringing Xbox Live to Windows Phone 7 and given the news earlier this year of an as-yet-opened app store for the Kindle, we're betting his talents are being applied to gaming on the Kindle.

Vrignaud also lamented leaving the Xbox Live platform team, noting the "thousands of times when I've watched or engaged in a passionate debate in a conference room about some arcane subject where the platform teams (who are all also gamers) fought hard to do the right thing for the consumer." Regardless, with Amazon's promise of a Kindle app store launching before year's end, it'll likely be sooner than later that we hear more about what Vrignaud is up to.
Microsoft game platform director scooped up by Amazon originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 07 Sep 2010 19:00:00 EST. The examples given in the press release include an interactive Zagat guide, and ... games!

According to the announcement, mobile publisher Sonic Boom will release "word games and puzzles" for the device -- which seems like a natural fit. But EA Mobile is also on board with the Kindle, which opens the door to its eventual metamorphosis into a game platform. A game platform with a black-and-white screen, sure, but also a very popular platform whose entire audience is comfortable downloading digital content.

A beta for the development kit will begin next month, with applications launching in the Kindle Store "later this year."

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has gone on the record with the Financial Times as being "interested" in the strategy Amazon has adopted for free internet access on its Kindle eBook reader. "I'm interested because it's a new business model in which the user doesn't bear the communications cost," he told the publication.

There's no fee for accessing Amazon's "WhisperNet" 3G network on Kindle, as the cost is built into the price of the device up-front. Taking a similar route with DS would mean the handheld would have a free, "always on" connection, something PSP doesn't and mobile platforms such as the iPhone do, but at the cost of a cellular data plan. "Only people who can pay thousands of yen a month [in mobile phone subscriptions] can be iPhone customers. That doesn't fit Nintendo customers because we make amusement products," Iwata said.

Such a move would definitely expose more DSi (and DSi XL) buyers -- especially those without access to home WiFi networks -- to Nintendo's DSi Store, but Iwata admits there would be mixed reactions among consumers, saying, "In reality, if we did this it would increase the cost of the hardware, and customers would complain about Nintendo putting prices up, but it is one option for the future."

[Via Pocket Gamer]

According to a recent Nintendo investor report, European DS owners might be able to ride the e-book wave this coming winter -- the tentative release date for the tentatively titled DS Novel.

Details about the game are non-existent, though DS Fanboy speculates that it's an English language version of a Japanese title which allows the user to peruse over 100 complete books.
