aficionados whose interest in <em>King of Fighters</em> may be more artistic than adversarial, this year's <a href="http://www.otakon.com/">Otakon</a> will also play host to a sneak preview of the title, although no Q&amp;A panel has been announced for the convention. SNK Playmore has announced via <a href="http://www.facebook.com/posted.php?id=115381791848274&amp;share_id=168159173201637&amp;comments=1#s168159173201637">its Facebook page</a> that an updated version of the arcade fighter, <em>King of Fighters 2002 Unlimited Match</em>, is headed to Xbox Live Arcade. The game was <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/12/07/snk-announces-metal-slug-xx-three-more-for-xbla-in-japan/">announced for Japan</a> late last year and is due in "Autumn 2010" here in the US. SNK promises "a high-quality conversion" of the original game, including "all characters from the NESTS CHRONICLES, numerous game modes, along with updated stages, new moves, BGM and graphics." <br />
<br />
The game will include 66 playable characters -- match and character balances will follow the Arcade version of the game, while the presentation of menus and number of characters and game modes will follow the expanded PS2 version. There's no price currently set for <em>King of Fighters 2002: Unlimited Match</em>, though <a href="http://marketplace.xbox.com/en-US/games/media/66acd000-77fe-1000-9115-d802584108d1/">the "Ultimate Match" version of <em>King of Fighters '98</em></a> is currently set at 800 MS Points on Xbox Live.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/15/king-of-fighters-2002-unlimited-match-coming-to-xbla-in-autumn/">King of Fighters 2002: Unlimited Match coming to XBLA in 'Autumn 2010'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 15 Oct 2010 18:00:00 EST. SNK's oddball bullet hell shmup, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/kof-sky-stage"><em>KOF Sky Stage</em></a>, has finally been dated for Xbox Live Arcade -- in Japan, at least. Masochists can check it out on September 15 for 800 MS Points ($10). That's a small price to pay to see Terry Bogard and company fly around and shoot stuff. And, y' know, play a <em>super-tough</em> game. <br />
<br />
The game originally launched in Japanese arcades back in January. PSP users can also <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/04/28/king-of-fighters-shooter-expanded-for-psp/">access <em>KOF Sky Stage</em> right now in <em>Neo Geo Heroes</em></a>, while those of us in the US can likely look forward to a localized release, so says <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/31/esrb-rates-kof-sky-stage-for-xbox-360/">an ESRB listing</a>. If you're looking to get an early start at finding all of those sweet hiding spots to take refuge from the impending bullet swarms, head past the break for a new trailer.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/03/kof-sky-stage-shoots-up-japanese-xbla-on-september-15/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>KOF Sky Stage shoots up Japanese XBLA on September 15</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/03/kof-sky-stage-shoots-up-japanese-xbla-on-september-15/">KOF Sky Stage shoots up Japanese XBLA on September 15</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 03 Sep 2010 06:00:00 EST. The lone release available for download is <em>King of Fighters '95</em>, a mish-mash of SNK's best fighters from its most prominent franchises. <em>KOF '95</em> introduces us to Iori Yagami, who would go on to be one of the series' favorite brawlers. <br />

The most potentially exciting games are a <em>Lemmings</em>-like thing about dodo eggs, a DSiWare version of a Scrabble card game we didn't know existed, and a fighting game of which you might already have three or four copies. Sure, there were problems with the netcode, but one problem with the roster irritated just as many fans: the omission of the scantily clad ninja, Mai Shiranui. So, naturally, SNK is leading with the bouncy character in its promotion for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/02/25/snk-playmore-announces-king-of-fighters-xiii-for-arcades/"><em>King of Fighters XIII</em></a>.<br />

A teaser site for the game, opened after a preview event, features a picture of Mai with her trademark fan, along with a note that the game will be released in arcades this summer.<br />

Despite the cool reception to its last <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/king-of-fighters-xii"><em>King of Fighters</em> game</a>, SNK Playmore has announced that it is working on <em>King of Fighters XIII</em>. The fighting game will be shown for the first time at an event in Akihabara on March 25.<br />
<br />
Until then, we know nothing about the game other than that it runs on Taito's TypeX2 arcade hardware -- the same board used by <em>Street Fighter IV, BlazBlue</em>, and, of course, <em>King of Fighters XII</em>. Well, we also know that it has a nice logo. And we're guessing fan favorite Mai Shiranui won't be left out this time.<br />

<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/resident-evil-5"><em><strong>Resident Evil 5</strong></em></a><br />
I've long been a fan of the <em>Resident Evil </em>series, and while the campaign here has problems and should <em>never</em> be played solo, the Mercenaries mode is what kept me coming back. Those action-packed levels spent trying to survive while running low on ammo and health were some of my most chaotic, yet highly enjoyable, experiences of 2009.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/01/01/best-of-the-rest-daves-picks-of-2009/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Best of the Rest: Dave's Picks of 2009</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/01/01/best-of-the-rest-daves-picks-of-2009/">Best of the Rest: Dave's Picks of 2009</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 01 Jan 2010 17:15:00 EST. We are <em>conflicted</em>, dear readers, over the assumed quality of the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/king-of-fighters"><em>King of Fighters</em></a> film adaptation, the <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cijrdspfceU">debut trailer for which</a> can be found after the jump. On one hand, we have the incomparable film chops of action heroine extraordinaire Maggie Q and former spiky-headed Jedi slayer, Ray Park. Also, the whole production is led by award-winning director Gordon Chan, so we at least know the hand on the film's rudder is gnarled with experience.<br />
<br />
On the other hand, it's <em>another</em> film based on the typically devoid-of-plot fighting game genre. If the precedent set by <em>Street Fighter</em>, <em>Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li</em>, <em>Double Dragon</em>, <em>Mortal Kombat</em>, <em>Mortal Kombat: Annihilation</em> and <em>Dead or Alive</em> are any indication, we could be in for another theatrical trainwreck.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/29/king-of-fighters-movie-trailer-giving-us-street-fighter-flashbac/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>King of Fighters movie trailer giving us Street Fighter flashbacks</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/29/king-of-fighters-movie-trailer-giving-us-street-fighter-flashbac/">King of Fighters movie trailer giving us Street Fighter flashbacks</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 29 Nov 2009 11:30:00 EST. To put it lightly, online play in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/king-of-fighters-xii/"><em>The King of Fighters XII</em></a> sucks. It's broken, regardless of which platform you play it on. Weeks after the game's release, SNK Playmore has finally released a patch for the PS3 version. According to the press release, the update "fundamentally changes the way game data is processed and synchronized during online matches, placing greater importance on the game's response time and allowing for much smoother play." Online battles should be improved, especially for those with less-than-ideal internet connections.<br /><br />An Xbox 360 version of the patch is also in the works and should be available "very soon." SNK Playmore issued an official apology with the release, promising it will "strive to improve their system of quality control for future titles," but we're wondering how the fighting community will response. For some, this patch may be too little, too late.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/king-of-fighters-xii-may-21/">King of Fighters XII</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/king-of-fighters-xii-may-21/#2027699"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/05/kof052101_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/king-of-fighters-xii-may-21/#2027698"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/05/kof052113_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/king-of-fighters-xii-may-21/#2027697"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/05/kof052112_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/king-of-fighters-xii-may-21/#2027696"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/05/kof052111_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/king-of-fighters-xii-may-21/#2027695"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/05/kof052110_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/31/king-of-fighters-xii-patch-fixes-online-play/">King of Fighters XII patch fixes online play</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 31 Aug 2009 19:00:00 EST. It's been years since we've seen a <em>King of Fighters </em>game and you'd think SNK had some cards hidden up its sleeve but, to be honest, <span style="font-style: italic;">King of Fighters XII</span> is short on the surprises.<br />

If you've been enjoying SNK's latest, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/king-of-fighters-xii"><em>King of Fighters XII</em></a>, you might be interested to learn that SNK and Shanda Games are teaming up to offer a version of that game for the PC. It's going to be called <a href="http://news.prnewswire.com/ViewContent.aspx?ACCT=109&amp;STORY=/www/story/07-30-2009/0005068983&amp;EDATE="><em>KOF World</em></a>, a free-to-play game for the Asian market. Aside from the usual 2D fighting, this new version will also incorporate "MMORPG features by adding a complete multiplayer role playing game (RPG) mode," though exact details on this new mode were not provided. Oh, and if you don't live in Asia, sorry for making you <em>incredibly jealous</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/31/free-to-play-kof-world-to-dropkick-asian-market/">Free-to-play 'KOF World' to dropkick Asian market</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 31 Jul 2009 03:00:00 EST. The trailer focuses on the series' fifteen year history, spanning all the way back to 1994. It's all very exciting.<br /><br /><em>King of Fighters XII</em> hits Xbox 360 and PS3 on July 28.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/16/new-king-of-fighters-xii-trailer-includes-punching-also-kicking/">New King of Fighters XII trailer includes punching, also kicking</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 16 Jul 2009 13:15:00 EST. The official Twitter account for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/king-of-fighters-xii"><em>King of Fighters XII</em></a> has <a href="http://twitter.com/KOF12/status/2622451537">revealed</a> the final date for retail release: July 28. <em>KOFXII</em> features 22 characters to choose from and the series' tried-and-true, three-on-three gameplay. The game does bring some new gameplay elements to the table, though, such as air guards and guard attacks; so it's not just the same old <em>King of Fighters</em> in HD. Not that that would totally be a bad thing ...<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/14/king-of-fighters-xii-uppercuts-retail-july-28/">King of Fighters XII uppercuts retail July 28</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 14 Jul 2009 12:40:00 EST. From SNK's huge library of fighting games, we have <em>King of Fighters '98 Ultimate Match</em>. XBLA is <a href="http://majornelson.com/archive/2009/06/29/this-week-on-arcade-worms-2-and-king-of-fighters-ultimate.aspx">dropping</a> a holy hand grenade's worth of violence this week with <em>Worms 2: Armageddon</em> and <em>King of Fighters '98 Ultimate Match</em>. Whether you're into vertebrate or spineless carnage, the entry fee to these glorious celebrations of hurt will cost 800<img border="0" alt="" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.xbox360fanboy.com/media/2007/11/microsoftpointslogosmall.gif" /> ($10) apiece.<br /><br /><em>Armageddon</em> brings some <a href="http://xbox.joystiq.com/2009/05/15/worms-2-armageddon-trailers-brings-the-fire-new-feature/">upgrades</a> to the original <em>Worms</em> XBLA title, so definitely check it out if you're a fan of the series. As for <em>KOF98</em>, the game is about $10 cheaper than the <a href="http://www.amazon.com/King-Fighters-98-Ultimate-Playstation-2/dp/B000AAPNKW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=videogames&amp;qid=1246298246&amp;sr=8-1">PS2 release</a>, and does support online play -- but there's never a guarantee on how that'll go. <br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/worms-2-armageddon-xbla/">Worms 2: Armageddon (XBLA)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/worms-2-armageddon-xbla/#1406908"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/03/xbla1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/worms-2-armageddon-xbla/#1406909"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/03/xbla11_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/worms-2-armageddon-xbla/#1406910"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/03/xbla2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/29/this-wednesday-worms-2-armageddon-king-of-fighters-98-ultima/">This Wednesday: Worms 2: Armageddon, King of Fighters '98 Ultimate Match attack XBLA</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 29 Jun 2009 16:15:00 EST. Over 100 contestants competed in a seven hour (!) <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/king-of-fighters-xii/"><em>King of Fighters XII</em></a> tournament in Hollywood yesterday, and when the smoke cleared, one winner was awarded a stately paper crown. Oh, and a full-sized <em>King of Fighters</em> arcade machine, straight from Japan. Reynold Tacsuan defeated Alex Phan in the best-of-three finals when his soldier Ralf Jones dealt a deathblow to Judo master Goro Daimon.<br /><br />Multiple arcade units and PS3s were set up around the venue featuring the new game, which doesn't hit U.S. shores until July 16, so attendees could face off while the tourney took place on the main stage. One station even went <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/king-of-fighters-xii-tournament/2045629/full">old-school</a> with Intellivision, an Atari 2600 and an old <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/king-of-fighters-xii-tournament/2045630/full">Vectrex</a> system. if only they'd had <em>KoF</em> back then.<br /><br />I am 8-bit was on hand throughout the event with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/king-of-fighters-xii-tournament/2045627/full">scantily clad nurses</a> administering fake cuts, bruises, and wounds to unblemished skin in their <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/king-of-fighters-xii-tournament/2045613/full">Anti-ER</a>. Which got us thinking: even though we're all for friendly competition in gaming, it would takes things up a notch if some company starts turning these events into feats of skill and muscle. It's high time they brought <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lzcVvTHZlQo">competitive arm wrestling</a> to the world of video games. <br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/king-of-fighters-xii-tournament/">King of Fighters XII Tournament</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/king-of-fighters-xii-tournament/#2045636"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/05/kof12tourney14_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/king-of-fighters-xii-tournament/#2045635"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/05/kof12tourney9_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/king-of-fighters-xii-tournament/#2045634"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/05/kof12tourney12_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/king-of-fighters-xii-tournament/#2045633"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/05/kof12tourney11_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/king-of-fighters-xii-tournament/#2045632"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/05/kof12tourney10_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/31/king-of-fighters-wins-giant-arcade-unit-paper-crown/">King of Fighters wins giant arcade unit, paper crown</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 31 May 2009 12:00:00 EST. A <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/king-of-fighters-xii">King of Fighters XII</a></em> <strike>battle to the death</strike> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/02/ignition-reveals-date-details-for-king-of-fighters-xii-tourname/">tournament</a> will be held this Saturday in a little burg known as Los Angeles. The event will be held May 30, from 12-7PM at Element (location details after the break). Cosplayers are welcome and there will be "goodies" on hand.<br /><br />Want to compete? The first 100 folks to RSVP to Paul[at]ignitionusa[dawt]com with their name and email address are good to go. We'll be covering the tournament this weekend in hopes of kicking our Iori Yagami addiction, so stay tuned for more.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/28/king-of-fighters-xii-tourney-in-la-this-saturday-may-30/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>King of Fighters XII tourney in LA this Saturday, May 30</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/28/king-of-fighters-xii-tourney-in-la-this-saturday-may-30/">King of Fighters XII tourney in LA this Saturday, May 30</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 28 May 2009 07:30:00 EST. We were pleased, then, when Ignition sent over this new video of a match featuring Elisabeth Blanctorche, a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/10/two-new-characters-for-king-of-fighters-xii-coming-home/">recent addition</a> to the <em>KOF XII</em> roster, facing off against SNK mainstay Joe Higashi.<br /><br />Confession time: when it comes to fighting games, even though we <em>adore them</em>, we're used to experiences like what the Joe player here is going through -- crushing defeats. Over and over again. At least with <em>KOF XII</em>, we'll get to lose <em>online</em> to a variety of opponents, which is somewhat novel for <em>KOF</em>. We like to mix it up, you know? Lose in the arcades sometimes, then lose at home with friends, then lose a few online matches. Maybe we'll try losing a couple of rounds with an arcade stick.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/king-of-fighters-xii-may-21/">King of Fighters XII</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/king-of-fighters-xii-may-21/#2027699"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/05/kof052101_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/king-of-fighters-xii-may-21/#2027698"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/05/kof052113_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/king-of-fighters-xii-may-21/#2027697"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/05/kof052112_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/king-of-fighters-xii-may-21/#2027696"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/05/kof052111_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/king-of-fighters-xii-may-21/#2027695"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/05/kof052110_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/21/watch-this-king-of-fighters-xii-footage-and-pretend-youre-winni/">Watch this King of Fighters XII footage and pretend you're winning</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 21 May 2009 21:45:00 EST. It looks like SNK is already preparing to outfit <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/king-of-fighters-xii"><em>King of Fighters XII</em></a> with DLC. The upcoming fighting game will have additional purchased content available on the <a href="http://www.xbox.com/ja-JP/games/k/kingoffightersXII/?WText.camp">Xbox Live Marketplace</a> (as uncovered by <a href="http://www.siliconera.com/2009/05/14/king-of-fighters-xii-has-dlc-console-specific-online-modes/">Siliconera</a>) and, presumably, on PSN as well. What that content is exactly, we don't know just yet; however, we assume this means more costumes and game modes a la <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/05/free-street-fighter-iv-championship-mode-dlc-costume-pack-pri/"><em>Street Fighter IV</em></a>. Maybe it means more characters ... like all the ones missing from <a href="http://www.4gamer.net/games/089/G008984/20090514035/screenshot.html?num=013">the roster screen</a>.<br /><br />In addition to DLC, <em>KoF XII</em> has console-specific online modes. The PS3 version features a "Clan" mode which is not found on the 360 version (check out the image above); however, the 360 version has a "Ranked Match" option while the PS3 version does not. Hmm ... you don't think SNK would charge for these modes as paid DLC now, would it?<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.siliconera.com/2009/05/14/king-of-fighters-xii-has-dlc-console-specific-online-modes/">Siliconera</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/16/king-of-fighters-xii-getting-dlc-console-specific-modes/">King of Fighters XII getting DLC, console-specific modes</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 16 May 2009 01:00:00 EST. You'll need to wield a sturdy fighting stick if you ever plan on becoming a champ in the fighting genre. Everyone knows that; Capcom <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/17/capcom-more-madcatz-street-fighter-4-controllers-by-april/">knows it</a>, Namco Bandai <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/22/soul-calibur-iv-limited-edition-fighting-stick-available-for-pre/">knows it</a>, and SNK Playmore <a href="http://game.watch.impress.co.jp/docs/news/20090512_168365.html">knows it</a>, too, which is why the latter will be releasing two, brand-new controllers alongside <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/king-of-fighters-xii"><em>King of Fighters XII</em></a> in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/03/king-of-fighters-xii-hits-ps3-360-worldwide-this-july/">July</a>. The first is a <em>King of Fighters XII</em> USB Stick featuring character artwork of series favorites Iori, Athena and others plastered on the topside. The second fighting pad is the Neo Geo Stick 2, a throwback to the classic controller, which will finally be available for PS3 (It's already out for Wii). They retail for &yen;6,279 ($65) and &yen;5,229 ($54), respectively.<br /><br />Now, why are those prices in Japanese currency? Well, unlike the game itself, these sticks haven't been given a worldwide release date. They hit Japanese stores on July 16th and hopefully we'll get them in time for launch date, too.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/13/fight-like-a-king-with-these-snk-fighting-sticks/">Fight like a king with these SNK fighting sticks</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 13 May 2009 12:15:00 EST. In addition to the ultra smooth (and likely quite sophisticated) <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/16/king-of-fighters-xii-screens-reveal-new-antialiasing-feature/"><em>King of Fighters XII</em> anti-aliasing graphical update</a>, it appears as though the home version of the game will be coming with two new characters. Elizabeth Blanctorche and a character known only as "Mature" will be joining the ranks of the already 20-character strong roster as a result of the move to console from arcades.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3174125">1UP</a> claims the game's Japanese language website also teases, "the art of K' and Mai Shiranui in the style of <em>KOFXII</em>," though it remains unconfirmed whether or not the console release will see more exclusive characters. We've always enjoyed SNK Playmore's long-running fighting franchise (the aptly named <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=King%20of%20Fighters">King of Fighters</a></em> series), though we often find ourselves stuck with an inexplicable desire to see the series' adroit brawlers fly effortlessly through the air while shooting bullets out of their hands.<br /><br />... No, you know what? We're not going to lie to you. <em>We've never thought that</em>. Nobody has, ever. Until now, that is -- <a href="http://www.famitsu.com/game/news/1223631_1124.html?ref=rss">Famitsu recently outed</a> SNK's latest, and arguably most bizarre project ever: An Xbox Live Arcade shoot 'em up based in the <em>KoF</em> universe, tentatively titled <em>King of Fighters Sky Stage.</em> Based on the early screenshots we've seen, we're still trying to decide whether the game is going to be <em>awesome</em> or <em>too awesome</em>. Maybe you haven't heard: People. Flying. Shooting. Bullets. Out. Of. Hands.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://kotaku.com/5220851/snk-making-fighting-shmup-game-bwah">Kotaku</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/21/snk-developing-king-of-fighters-shmup-for-xbla/">SNK developing King of Fighters shmup for XBLA</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 21 Apr 2009 16:01:00 EST. Microsoft's plans for the Far East have always been something of a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/31/big-in-japan-xbox-360-cracks-1-million-ps3-just-over-3-million/">murky</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/20/survey-says-xbox-360-leads-in-consumer-satisfaction-in-japan/">science</a>, pea soup made somewhat more clear following the company's recent media conference in Japan. Siliconera reports that the Xbox 360 will play host to a number of high-profile titles in Japan in the months ahead, 31 in all, including <em>Magna Carta 2</em> in August and tri-Ace RPG <em>End of Eternity </em>(sadly not based on the Isaac Asimov novel) in the winter.<br /><br />Japanese gamers will finally get to suit up as a decidedly <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/20/mass-effect-2-teaser-gives-grim-fate-to-shepard-and-co/">not dead yet</a> Commander Shepard when the original <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/mass-effect"><em>Mass Effect</em></a> finally graces Japanese store shelves on May 21, while players will have to wait until later this summer to cure the locust plague in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/gears-of-war-2"><em>Gears of War 2</em></a>. <br /><br />Another 14 XBLA titles were confirmed at the event, including the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/24/voot-virtual-on-oratorio-tangram-coming-to-xbla/">previously announced</a> remake of mech shooter <em>Virtual On Oratorio Tangram</em>, which will arrive in Japan on April 29. Other notable upcoming downloads include <em>Mega Man 9</em> in June, <em>Space Invaders Extreme</em> this spring and <em>The King of Fighters 2002 Unlimited Match</em> sometime in 2010. And what of Square Enix, which plans fill Japanese XBLA appetites this year with puzzler <em>Yosumin Live</em>, <em>Project Cube</em> and the wonderfully titled<em> 0 Day Attack on Earth</em> (pictured)? Well, we have those trailers for you after the break.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.siliconera.com/2009/04/21/this-is-what-microsoft-has-planned-for-japanese-retailers-for-now/">Source</a>: This Is What Microsoft Has Planned For Japanese Retailers For Now<br /><a href="http://www.siliconera.com/2009/04/21/square-enix-and-snk-blast-announce-xbox-live-arcade-games/">Source</a>: Square Enix And SNK Blast Announce Xbox Live Arcade Games<br /><a href="http://www.siliconera.com/2009/04/21/watch-some-square-enix-xbox-live-arcade-trailers/">Source</a>: Watch Some Square Enix Xbox Live Arcade Trailers<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/21/microsoft-readying-31-game-barrage-for-japan/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Microsoft readying 31-game barrage for Japan</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/21/microsoft-readying-31-game-barrage-for-japan/">Microsoft readying 31-game barrage for Japan</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 21 Apr 2009 09:25:00 EST. Oh, wait, that's not it, though we like the wallpapers a lot. The website features a signup form to "win a free spot in the <em>KOFXII</em> tournament in LA." Awesome news for those of you confident in your Rising Tackles! That kind of confidence will be tested for <em>most KOFXII</em> players, by the way, because the game supports online multiplayer. We're guessing that the tournament will be held near the July release date.<br /><br />Also seen on the website: potential box art for the game, showing what could possibly be a limited-edition version in a fancy slipcase. Of course, Ignition has been putting <em>all</em> of its games in fancy slipcases lately, so it's not necessarily an LE.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/king-of-fighters-xii-march-16/">King of Fighters XII (March 16)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/king-of-fighters-xii-march-16/#1433168"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/03/kof1203160903_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/king-of-fighters-xii-march-16/#1433167"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/03/kof1203160902_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/king-of-fighters-xii-march-16/#1433166"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/03/kof1203160901_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/king-of-fighters-xii-march-16/#1433165"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/03/kof1203160904_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/25/king-of-fighters-xii-tournament-to-be-held-in-la/">King of Fighters XII tournament to be held in LA</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 25 Mar 2009 10:15:00 EST. Well, there isn't that much in the way of interesting, new gaming content available for the Wii this week. Releases from <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/releases">the previous weeks</a> have been very good, but this week just doesn't have much for us (that is, unless you've been anxiously awaiting the release of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/23/ultimate-band-uses-ultimate-pantomime/"><em>Ultimate Band</em></a>, but that's probably not the case). Head on past the break for the full list of all the new gaming content available for Wii this week.<br /><br /><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/24/retail-and-download-releases-for-the-week-of-november-24th/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Retail and download releases for the week of November 24th</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/24/retail-and-download-releases-for-the-week-of-november-24th/">Retail and download releases for the week of November 24th</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 24 Nov 2008 09:00:00 EST. Been jonesing to play more <em>Arkanoid</em> ever since that thing came out back in 1986? It was Breakout on steroids, and ate quarters like Cookie Monster eats chocolate chip cookies. <em>Super Arkanoid</em> and <em>Space Invaders Extreme</em> will be out on XBLA this winter, and it'll be joined next year by <em>Metal Slug 7</em> , <em>R-Type</em> and <em>The King of Fighters '98: Ultimate Match</em>. <br /><br />The games will all be updated with new graphics, music, two-player and online modes, and will do a good job towards filling that vintage hole in your heart. Now Capcom, please give us some <em>Darkstalkers</em>, and we'll be happy.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/08/king-of-fighters-98-arkanoid-space-invaders-extreme-metal-sl/">King of Fighters '98, Arkanoid, Space Invaders Extreme, Metal Slug 7, and more heading to XBL Arcade</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 08 Oct 2008 23:38:00 EST. <div align="left">Recently, the <a href="http://www.siliconera.com/2008/09/03/the-king-of-fighters-98-ultimate-match-is-coming-to-xbla/">master list</a> of all games to be shown at the Tokyo Game Show 2008 was released and on it is a listing for SNK Playmore's <em><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_King_of_Fighters_%2798">King of Fighters '98 Ultimate Match</a> </em>for the XBLA. Yes sir, fighter fanboys can get excited for SNK Playmore's fighting franchise <em>King of Fighters</em> on the Arcade. Delicious, ain't it?<br /></div>

<br />Seeing that the game hasn't been officially announced, we aren't certain when it'll release, how much it'll cost or what 360 improvements have been made. But that's what the actual TGS event is for. You know, game specifics and game announcements. Time to practice the fighting art of patience ...<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.destructoid.com/king-of-fighters-98-hitting-xbox-live-arcade-102400.phtml">Destructoid</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/04/king-of-fighters-98-in-development-for-the-xbla/">King of Fighters '98 in development for the XBLA</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 04 Sep 2008 13:15:00 EST. Sometimes we get tricked, too, you know. Anyway, some new scans from Famitsu show off a couple screens of the upcoming <em>King of Fighters XII</em> and we've got to say -- it's looking very, very nice. Athena seems to have gained a little weight, but perhaps it's our imagination. Everyone's gotta be really buff to be a king amongst fighters, right? Enjoy.<br /><br />[via <a href="http://www.ps3forums.com/showthread.php?t=130842">PS3Forums</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/02/new-king-of-fighters-xii-scans-show-off-2d-glory/">New King of Fighters XII scans show off 2D glory</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 02 Apr 2008 06:30:00 EST. What we didn't quite expect was the huge display over at the SNK area of classic fighters and their respective compilations also getting a 2008 release. The video details some of the PS2 anthologies, but also goes into some of the PSP versions. If you're a fan of fighting games, new or old, this is your year. Embrace it, buy it roses, but keep it at arms length or it will say you're suffocating it and it needs some time to itself. Then the year will never, ever come back.<br /><br />[Thanks, LeadTester!]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/25/gdc08-snk-shows-off-some-psp-fighter-anthologies/">GDC08: SNK shows off some PSP fighter anthologies</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 25 Feb 2008 22:00:00 EST. Unfortunately I wasn't able to stare at the character selection screen long enough to get who was new!<br /><br />The original <em>King of Fighters '98</em> is already coming to the PS2 (and PSP and Wii) on the <em>King of Fighters: Orochi Saga</em> collection, but in case you <em>really</em> like the game -- which most fans of the series do -- this is the version to get. It does include the original in addition to the remake. This is expected to release in Q4 of this year.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/21/gdc08-king-of-fighters-98-ultimate-match-headed-to-ps2/">GDC08: King of Fighters '98 Ultimate Match headed to PS2</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 21 Feb 2008 12:00:00 EST. It is coming to Wii!), SNK went ahead and announced two <em>more</em> Wii compilations in an email sent out yesterday. Both <em>Samurai Shodown Anthology</em> and <em>King of Fighters: The Orochi Saga</em> will also see Wii releases, as well as versions for the PS2 and PSP.<br /><br />We don't know exactly which titles will be included, but the Japanese version of the <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xZGJMZyftdo"><em>Samurai Shodown Anthology</em></a> contained <em>Shodowns</em> <em>I </em>through <em>VI,</em> and the <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8mlP2Zu58hs"><em>KOF collection</em></a> included<em> KOF's '95, '96, and '97</em>. That means that there's overlap between the collections, since <em>Samurai Shodown</em> will be on both the <em>SNK Arcade</em> and <em>Samurai Shodown Anthology</em> collections.<br /><br />SNK will have all three collections on display at GDC. Hopefully they'll have some <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/28/neo-geo-stick-2-coming-to-wii-hori-fighting-stick-forgotten/">Neo Geo Stick 2</a>'s with which to test the games!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/14/snk-arcade-classics-confirmed-for-wii-plus-more/">SNK Arcade Classics confirmed for Wii plus more!</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 14 Feb 2008 13:30:00 EST. That seems like a long time from now, but don't worry old school fighting fans -- 2008 won't be going down without a little SNK love. The <a href="http://www.snk-capcom.com/forums/showthread.php?t=27331">SNK-Capcom website</a> tells fans that the AOU 2008 expo in Tokyo's Makuhari Messe convention center will feature<em> </em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/king-of-fighters-xii/"><em>King of Fighters XII</em></a> in video format.<br /> </p>
<p>Not much else is know about what will be shown at AOU, but we do know that<em> KoF XII</em> will use a whole new game engine and rehashed old character sprites will be a thing of the past. The game is expected to come out first in the arcades by June/July 2008, running on the Taito Type X&amp;sup2;. A PS3 port (and possibly an Xbox 360 port) will follow in 2009.<br /></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/11/king-of-fighters-xii-at-aou-2008/">King of Fighters XII at AOU 2008</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 11 Feb 2008 21:00:00 EST.
