Nintendo celebrates Kirby's 20th Anniversary on Wii

Opening up the Nintendo Direct conference livestream, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata revealed the company has big plans to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Kirby. A new Wii game will collect past titles and package them on a retail disc - which classic Kirby titles would be included is a mystery.

Outside of the existence of Kirby's 20th Anniversary on Wii, nothing else is known right now.

Nintendo Direct time travels with news tonight, tomorrow, yesterday

Nintendo Direct, the all-Nintendo-news, some-of-the-time video series from official Nintendo headquarters, is hitting the airwaves tonight. Technically, it's noon EST tomorrow, April 21, but folks in the US can expect announcements from the Japanese feed starting at 8:30 p.m. PST tonight, Friday, April 20. The European announcements will hit at 1 p.m. CET (4 a.m. PST), April 21.

Nintendo hasn't revealed what it will discuss tonight, but it has left us a trail of clues. CEO Satoru Iwata sent out invitations to this weekend's Nintendo Direct on 3DS' Spot Pass, showing him with a giant, suspicious Kirby plushie. Kid Icarus: Uprising's Masahiro Sakurai tweeted to expect Uprising news and Theatrhythm Final Fantasy's Masanobu Suzui suggested fans should watch the feed, Andriasang translates.

We'll have our eyes and fingertips ready to roll for any breakout Kirby-Kid-Icarus-Theatrhythm crossover news tonight, because really, it's not like we had any plans on a Friday night or anything.

Fake Miyamoto takes to Twitter and revitalizes Nintendo franchises in Flash

As if the saga of Fake Peter Molyneux weren't an exciting enough Twitter story, today we were introduced to Faux Shigeru Miyamoto, who creates amazing Flash games using classic Nintendo characters. Both Mario and Kirby are lampooned in Flash on the impersonator's Tumblr site, as well as the legendary creator himself of course. Presumably the totally-not-retiring slash potentially retiring developer isn't just pulling a fast one on us all, and we very much doubt these are prototypes for that original game he's making.

Regardless, we suggest one thing before heading into any of the games on said site: turn your volume way, way down. Or up, if you're extremely hard of hearing, but otherwise, ya know, it's super loud. Deafeningly so.

Kirby's Return to Dreamland review: Sleepwalking

Kirby's Return to Dreamland is too easy.

I know I'm going to have to back that up, given that you couldn't die in the previous Kirby game, and I loved that one -- and given that Kirby has never exactly been synonymous with brutal difficulty, and that's kind of the point.

But Kirby's Return to Dreamland, unlike Epic Yarn, centers on giving Kirby the most impressive, most exciting, and most powerful powers he's ever had, and then fails to put them to any kind of interesting use. Really, the only ability you have to master in order to succeed in this game is pushing the attack button.

Kirby: Mass Attack review: Pink, puffy and preposterous

The core conceit of Kirby: Mass Attack was dreamed up by a complete lunatic. That's the only thing I can say about the game with absolute certainty. What sane human being would choose to eschew the time-tested formula of floaty-platforming and adorable mimicry that serves as the keystone for the franchise? Who, in their right mind, would swap that formula out for a bizarre, chimeric blend of the platforming, real-time strategy and mini-game collection genres?

That's not a condemnation of Kirby: Mass Attack, of course -- that sort of outside-the-sanity-box thinking also led to the creation of the magnificent Kirby: Canvas Curse. This latest aberration of the powderpuff series doesn't quite reach the heights established by that predecessor; but during those moments where its preternatural ideas work in tandem, it comes awfully darn close.

Historically, very few small pink blobs have done more to further innovation in the field of minigame design than Kirby, and judging from the above trailer, HAL Laboratory's DS swan-song Kirby Mass Attack will continue that proud tradition. Other continuing traditions include: ruthlessly destroying docile forrest creatures via accurately timed button presses, and ruining Whispy Woods' day in as many ways as possible.

New Kirby Wii game coming from HAL Laboratory

There's a new Kirby game coming to the Wii. And this time, it's far more epic than yarn. Tucked inside Nintendo's quarterly report is mention of a new Kirby sequel, developed by series originator HAL Laboratory.

As you'll see in the video teaser (after the break), the pink mascot appears much more powerful than ever before. Not only is he seem toting a giant sword, he also summons a fire dragon, sucks in an entire group of enemies, and shoots out a massive death star. "Warm and fuzzy" this is not.

Kirby's Epic Yarn to wind up in Europe Feb. 25

While it still stings, we're sure, to have to wait until 2011 to play Kirby's Epic Yarn, Nintendo revealed a European release date today that isn't too far into next year: February 25. You won't be able to get it for Christmas, but you could conceivably have some gift cards left over from the holiday, at least.

Perhaps it took Nintendo a while to translate all the cutesy descriptions of the collectible furniture items. Or perhaps it's taken Nintendo of Europe several months to stop hugging all the copies of the game long enough to get them into boxes.

The Epic Yarn of how Fluff's game became Kirby's

Kirby's Epic Yarn bears little resemblance to traditional Kirby games, and it partners the beloved pink sphere with a new character, Prince Fluff. It turns out, according to an Iwata Asks interview with Good-Feel and Nintendo staff, that there's a good reason for both -- Epic Yarn was originally Prince Fluff's game.

Wario Land: Shake It! director Madoka Yamauchi came up with an idea for "World of Fluff" and designed it around the Prince Fluff character. Nintendo loved the idea, but thought something was missing from the "warm" world Good-Feel had created. Nintendo proposed turning it into a Kirby game last year.

Producer Etsunobu Ebisu said that having Kirby in the world gives Epic Yarn "a greater feeling of existing." Also, we're sure, Kirby gives it a greater feeling of hope for good sales.

Nintendo produced a few slick videos of its various console lineups for its conference, now embedded after the break.

In addition to footage of known 3DS games, including Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition and Professor Layton and the Mask of Miracle, the 3DS video reveals a second Resident Evil game, Biohazard: The Mercenaries 3D. The Wii video offers the first look at the new Fatal Frame and Rhythm Heaven games, among many other first- and third-party titles. And though you have to wait until the end, you will see clips of the new Kirby game and Battle & Get! Pokemon Typing DS in the DS video.

Kirby, Pokemon Typing (!) on the way to regular old DS

Despite the 3DS making its big appearance at Nintendo's conference and dominating the news, that system doesn't get to claim the weirdest story of the night. The humble DS gets that honor, thanks to "Battle & Get! Pokemon Typing DS," which is exactly what it sounds like. Judging by the screenshots (available here), you type Pokemon and attack names when prompted, using a virtual keyboard. Wacky!

Also wacky: Kirby (tentative title), a new DS game which appears to have the player managing a team of up to 10 Kirbies at a time. We sincerely hope there are no restaurants in the game. Both games will be released in 2011.

There's also a training game about dogs who know English, but considering America's widespread knowledge of English -- and the partnership with the Japanese NHK television network -- it's safe to say that one is Japan-only.

Kirby's Epic Yarn, for example, is still a cutesy side-scroller, like other Kirby games, but it presents a new art style that seems pretty far out for such a mainstream game, one that has charmed me to an uncomfortable degree. The game also adds a new gameplay gimmick that, while it's not as drastic a change as Canvas Curse, still alters the basics of Kirby. And, like every new 2D platformer announced at E3, it has co-op.

Kirby's Epic Yarn coming to the Wii this fall

Nintendo has announced a brand new Kirby game, coming to the Wii this fall. Kirby's Epic Yarn features an all-new art style for Kirby, with the character drawn in yarn and threads, and the backgrounds of the game looking as if they were created with sewn fabric. The game has Kirby wandering a 2D platform world, whipping characters and projectiles with his yarn, and taking on various ships, from a car and blimp to a gigantic screen-filling tank.

There was also a second character shown, and a little bit of co-op play, with the two characters helping each other to reach platforms and separate areas. Nintendo says the game is due out sometime this fall -- we'll keep an eye out for the game on the floor of E3 today.

Nintendo report hints at new Wii titles, Other M release

Nintendo is one of a few companies to release its earnings report earlier this week, and a supplemental report released today has some surprises and new information for Wii owners. Not only does it finally list a target date for Metroid: Other M (you can expect it as soon as summer of this year if all goes according to plan), but there are two brand new names in the list as well: Xenoblade and The Last Story. Xenoblade is listed for a Spring 2010 release, so we should be hearing about that one soon, and The Last Story is listed for sometime this year, with both slated for release on the Wii in Japan. There's reason to believe these are just new names, as both Monado: Beginning of the World and Cosmic Walker are missing from the report, and Monado was being developed by Monolith Soft, known most notably for another Xeno- title you may have heard of. But Monado is still listed for a release in the US this year, so who knows?

Other than that, the report lists some titles we expected to see soon: A new Kirby Super Star title, Super Mario Galaxy 2, the Wii's Legend of Zelda, Golden Sun for DS, and a few other releases scheduled in 2010. Full list of Japanese Wii releases is after the break.

Viz publishing Kirby manga in North America

Do you ever want to go beyond the Kirby games, and explore the deep backstory and complex, rich cast of characters in the Kirby universe? If so, you'll be pleased to hear that manga/anime publisher Viz Media is releasing a 25-volume Kirby manga in North America, joining Zelda and Pokemon manga.

The manga by Hirokazu Hikawa follows "Kirby and his friend, Chirby," trying to return the Star Rod while being pursued by King Dedede. Essentially, it's Lord of the Rings, but with an infantile pink monster who devours everything instead of a hobbit. The first volume will be out September 2010.

TripleSpeedRunners take on Nintendo trio for charity

Harnessing the power of Nintendo franchises for charity, the folks at TripleSpeedRunners will be spending 48 hours this weekend speed-running through games from the Donkey Kong, Star Fox, and Kirby series. Live streaming of the event will be handled on the crew's website, with live commentary and chat available to cheer the players -- or jeer 'em if you're a player hater.

All proceeds from donations during the event will go to DC Outreach, an organization that provides worldwide support to families affected by Dyskeratosis Congenita. Last time TSR got together, it raised $1,140 for the DC charity, but we know with the full support of the Joystiq BioMass behind them we can help them double that. Right, folks?

The speed-runs kick off this Friday at 7PM ET sharp.

Kirby's Dreamland 'movie' trailer is the stuff of nightmares

The Kirby we know and love is "one tough cream puff," but in this short from the mind of one MB McClain, he's a serial killer who ingests his victims in order to absorb their souls. His lovable antagonist from the games, King Dedede? He's a grizzled detective who vows to capture Kirby ... dead or alive. Yep, folks, it's another day of disturbing gaming videos here at the 'stiq.

In fact, if you have any little ones, we suggest you shoo them away before watching the trailer (more of a short film, really) after the break, lest they grow up to make the kind of video you're about to fuel six months' worth of nightmares with. While we're not sure McClain's Kirby could ever carry an entire film, he could make a good second-rung ~~slasher~~ absorber in the next Freddy vs. Jason.

Club Nintendo Japan updates with flying Kirby and more

Nintendo of Japan just updated its Club Nintendo rewards shop with a bunch of new exclusive items that will no doubt have you crying into your canvas Wiimote storage box. The most eye-catching new item is the 350-Coin Kirby flying disc, which looks just like a flat Kirby made out of nylon.

Other new items include Zelda posters, a Mario & Luigi 3 soundtrack (which is discounted for those who purchased the game), pencil cases, and a very cute set of Animal Crossing magnet clips. We can't help but think that no matter how sad we are over our inability to obtain the Kirby frisbee, we're going to weep openly when Japan's Platinum and Gold rewards are unveiled.

Kirby's Dream Land 3 (Super NES[TM], 1-2 players, 800 Wii Points): This title had the unfortunate luck of coming out within a week of the incredibly awesome Kirby Superstar -- great timing, Nintendo! Still, it's a fun game that happens to be just like its predecessors. We half expect the company to pull some poetic injustice and release Superstar on Virtual Console next week.

DS Daily: Record Club Nintendo

The Japanese Club Nintendo store was updated this week with a soundtrack CD for Kirby Super Star Ultra. Now, we're almost certain (because we're pessimists) that we won't get neat items like that on our own Club Nintendo page, and instead we'll be "treated" to the opportunity to exchange points for wallpapers that would have just been free before.

But if we do get stuff like this, will you be interested? If so, would you be interested in Nintendo game soundtracks for collecting-related reasons or listening-related? Do any DS games stand out as soundtrack-worthy? It totally counts if you already have the soundtrack. And would charging points instead of money affect your thought process?

Japan's Club Nintendo features music from a Super Star

Kirby Super Star Ultra, specifically, or Hoshi no Kirby Ultra Super Deluxe as it's known in Japan. We used to look at these Japanese Club Nintendo gifts with jealousy and despair, but now that Nintendo of America is planning some kind of Club Nintendo, we see them with ... jealousy and despair combined with the expectation of disappointment.

The Kirby Ultra Super Deluxe Sound Track contains 33 tracks from Super Star Ultra, along with newly arranged stage and boss medleys and an arrangement of the credit sequence music. It'll cost Club Nintendo members who register Super Star Ultra 250 points, and 400 points for non-Kirby-owning members.

Update: Wow, we can be pretty boneheaded sometimes. We prematurely ended the contest and chose a winner, thinking it ended on Sunday night, as per our usual routine. This latest contest, however, wasn't supposed to end until the evening of Tuesday, October 28th. We apologize for the mistake and will be leaving the contest open, selecting the winner at random again, after it has officially concluded. That's right, boys and girls, we're hooking up one lucky reader with Nintendo's Kirby Super Star Ultra ($35)! What do you have to do to enter for your chance at this great game?

To enter, simply leave a comment between now and Tuesday, October 28th at 11:59PM ET, telling us what your favorite Kirby form is (you know, what happens when he swallows an enemy up!). You can leave one comment per day. We'll select a winner the following day via random drawing.

Gaming to Go: Kirby: Canvas Curse

The beach is awesome. The life of a game blogger is a difficult one, my friends, so it's nice to step away from the monitor, sink into the white sands and catch up on that glorious invention known as sleep. Such a relaxing week could only bring good things, and I'm incredibly pleased to say it did: it gave good David a chance to talk about Electroplankton, one of the DS's most eccentric titles, and it gave me a chance to give the Kirby series a go.

You can imagine my delight, then, to finally gets my sandy hands on one of the DS's premiere platformers, to see how one cute and cuddly pink ball can inspire so much adoration. Kirby has made a number of appearances on everyone's favorite handheld, but this week's edition of Gaming to Go will be focusing on the first time the prolific cake eater showed his face on the portable. Kirby: Canvas Curse, in case you haven't given it a go, is all about drawing. You'll use the stylus exclusively to fling our spherical friend through many different adventures, all of which are short, colorful, and an absolute blast to play. Want to hear more? DS Fanboy Review: Kirby Super Star Ultra

Kirby Super Star Ultra is the best of the traditional Kirby games (by which I mean the ones that don't feature Kirby as a ball). It features more abilities and more moves than pretty much any other Kirby game, and the levels are more varied in their design. It manages to still be the best traditional Kirby game, despite the fact that it was released in its original form on the Super NES. The new content certainly hasn't done it any favors, and, like all Kirby games, it won't provide much of a challenge, but Super Star Ultra remains as clever as it was in 1996, and completely worth every platform fan's time.

We're taking a little break from our regular format this week in order to do something very simple: make you jealous as hell. Reader John has some good stuff -- hardware, gear, extras -- but not so much that it's really notable. We do like the plush Kirby, though. No, what brings us here today, agape and agog, is his collection of DS games, which stood at 209 titles when he sent in these pictures, with more on the way.

So today, John, we salute you, O Buyer of Games. And, uh, got anything we could borrow?

A brief history of Club Nintendo Awesomeness

By now, you've no doubt heard: Nintendo is rolling out Club Nintendo in the U.S. by the end of 2008. Wahey! Yeah, we know that Japan (generally speaking) gets the most excellent items when compared to elsewhere, but listen here, bub: it's free stuff. We're not about to complain, and nor should you (if you want to feel sorry for somebody, Australia's Club Nintendo scheme has gone AWOL, and check out South Africa's piss-poor Stars Catalogue).

Anyway, as these are happy times for North Americans, we thought we'd reflect on some of the bestest Club Nintendo gifts and trinkets from both Japan and Europe to date -- some of which could end up in the U.S.! Hit the gray button to start DS Fanboy's whirlwind Club Nintendo Tour of Wonders!

The DS Life: Light the Way

Despite the title, this post has nothing to do with Prism: Light the Way, one of the DS's most interesting but overlooked puzzlers. Circuit City has the game on sale for $9.99 this week, though, so you should totally look into picking it up anyway!

For this week's edition of The DS Life, we'll look at several images taken from photographer Patrick Brosset's collection of light painting shots, long-exposure photos taken with streaks of light drawn over the scene. E308: Taking in Kirby Super Star Ultra's new minigames

The demo version of Kirby: Super Star Ultra was limited to one of the original minigames, Spring Breeze, and two new touch-based minigames, Kirby Card Swipe and Kirby on the Draw. It's not much of a revelation to say that Spring Breeze is great, because it was great on the original cartridge and it retains the same amount of greatness on the DS. The look did not need updating at all: Super Star's colorful, bright graphics hold up today. The new rendered intro scene looks awkward compared to the awesome original graphics.

In case Super Star is new to you, Spring Breeze is an abbreviated Kirby platformer in the style of Kirby's Adventure. Kirby walks through a series of levels, sucking up enemies, whose powers he can absorb. The levels all tend to be full of breakable blocks and little secret health items. The main wrinkle to Spring Breeze is the partner system: in addition to stealing abilities, you can also put an enemy into service, fighting alongside you, with his own life bar.

Overlooked@E3: Kirby Super Star Ultra

You'd think for all his years of good service, Kirby would deserve a shout-out during the Nintendo E3 2008 keynote -- at least a spot in a video montage. But no, Kirb got the shaft, and if you weren't already keeping tabs on the pink puff, you'd have no idea Nintendo was releasing a (somewhat) new Kirby title for DS -- one of only five first party DS games scheduled for release during the remainder of the year. Exploring Nintendo's E3 press site, we've discovered confirmation that Kirby Super Star Ultra (a remake of the ultraless SNES game) is still on track for a September 22 release.

Super Star Ultra will feature all of the original game's modes, plus "new adventures," including three, touch-controlled minigames (Kirby Card Swipe, Kirby on the Draw and Snack Tracks) that support up to 4 players via DS Download Play. With multiple cartridges, two players can play the adventure mode, with one assuming the roles of "Helpers," clones of Kirby's foes created with a new ability.

E308: Kirby loves super stardom

Kirby Super Star Ultra is getting a hefty overhaul from the original SNES title, and the pink blob is right in the spotlight with an absolute metric tonne of new media. The above trailer shows all the colorful action right on the DS screens, while the gallery below has a whole range of new screens and character art -- not to mention the snazzy box art.

Finally, 'tis the season for release dates (you may have notice the whole E3 thing): Kirby Super Star Ultra will be hitting the stores on September 22nd. About damn time, too -- fans have been waiting too long after the brilliance of Canvas Curse.

E308: Nintendo dates dozens of debuting games

We are about to enter full news overload here, folks! Not only did the Nintendo media blitz descend -- as you'll see for yourself -- but we've also got updated release lists for tons of games, many of which had no release windows set until today. While few of the titles have a firm date, we've got month-long windows on several, and at least one (Kirby Super Star Ultra) looks to have moved up from the date we previously had on file.

Check out the full lists in the gallery below, but be warned: your wallet will cry. In fact, it may be weeping already.

Stars Catalogue now offering GBA titles [Update 1]

Two Game Boy Advance games have randomly appeared in the Stars Catalogue, leading us to surmise that Nintendo has been spring-cleaning its warehouses and found a bunch of old, unsold stock. Kirby & The Amazing Mirror and Mario Power Tennis are both decent purchases, we suppose, even if the price (5000 Stars each) is steep (you'd need to buy at least 20 DS games to amass that many Stars). We're still waiting on the warehouse with all the sealed Super Famicom consoles to get cleared out (it must exist somewhere).

Some other new tat has also been added, including a Pokémon sports bag, and three further items that have (inexplicably) sold out: a Raving Rabbids T-shirt, a Pokémon Mystery Dungeon bookmark, and a Brain Training pen. Don't all rush at once, please.

[Update 1: And the Kirbster has sold out!]
