Rockstar Games has unveiled how it will be using the Rockstar Social Club service for Red Dead Redemption, and cowboys (and girls) looking for a little extra horsin' around won't be disappointed. The Social Club is offering achievements and challenges on top of the game, so, for example, one early mission that has you horsedragging an outlaw around will have a target time, and Social Club members who beat that time will get access to a special "Guns Blazing" cheat that gives your shots the chance to light enemies on fire. There will also be game-wide challenges, including one later this month that will require everyone playing the game to hit a certain amount of money raised, with an Xbox Live or PlayStation Home avatar T-shirt as a prize.

There will also be community news, multiplayer events, special leaderboards and lots of stats tracked on the Social Club website. 100% completion is even "exclusively" in the Social Club, so presumably the only way you'll be able to know that you've done everything the West has to offer is to log on with a Rockstar Games account and find out. Kind of peculiar that information isn't in the game itself, no? At least signing up for the Social Club is free, so if you're planning to ride the plains next week, might as well do it now.
Red Dead Redemption to get Rockstar Social Club exclusive challenges and more originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 11 May 2010 23:00:00 EST. Maybe our unchecked pessimism is at fault here, but whenever we see a multiplatform title announced, we automatically assume that the dual-screen edition will be an afterthought, a slipshod product adjoined with ill-conceived touchscreen controls and minigames in the same way a madman engineer might weld iron limbs to human flesh. We're thrilled to see that isn't the case this time!

Space Invaders Extreme's multiplayer versus mode (local and online) will have you racing against another player to destroy advancing aliens. You can follow your opponent's progress on the top display while fighting your own battle on the bottom screen. You'll also be able to compare your record with other players on the game's world ranking system. If only Taito implemented some sort of voice chat -- that way, you could annoy your online adversary by singing Genesis's "Invisible Touch" along with Extreme's synth soundtrack.

See also: 2008's Biggest Blips -- Space Invaders Extreme
Invade your friends' space originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 15 Feb 2008 14:15:00 EST. Topping the list of online additions is a new versus mode in which you can take a break from having monsters, traps, and other common dungeon hazards kill you -- instead, you can die at the hands of other wandering Shirens.

Like the rescue feature introduced in Shiren the Wanderer DS, you can resurrect your friends who've died during their dungeon travels (they can resurrect you, too!) in Shiren 3. Also, online leaderboards and a pot-trading system will be implemented in the Wii version, putting that Nintendo WiFi connection to good use. All that's left to ask for is a US release from Sega!
Shiren 3 packed with online features originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 12 Feb 2008 19:00:00 EST. Players can use the free service to keep track of a range of quantifiable game performance details. We're not quite sure what to make of the service, since an Xbox Live Gamertag does nearly the same thing on a platform basis, albeit Xbox only. (We see overlap with Steam too, for another heavy competitor.)

We'll give the site some hope, however, since it's signed a wide roster of EA, Activision, Capcom, and Sega for launch titles. Those games are Battlefield 2 (PC), Guitar Hero III (Wii, 360, PS3), Lost Planet (360), and Universe at War (PC, 360). The site combines stats from all of those games into a single user profile. It'll also strip Gamertag data into its service.

GameStrata aims to bathe geeks in delicious data to keep them away from in-game -- and community-based -- competitors. Co-founder Barry Dorf takes exception to our classification, saying via email, "We do not see the space as having competitors, only partners. There are publishers that track stats and some that do not. We do not believe the publishers that are tracking stats are at the granular level we want them to be, or they want to be. Where do I rank in the first chorus during Sabotage in GH3 on Medium, or how many headshots did I make last week in Battlefield 2, and where did it rank amongst those stats?"

Those details run deep, letting gamers graph performance over time -- say, kills with a certain weapon -- and compare it to friends. Players can also broadcast a syndicated news feed to update competitors with their latest achievements.
Continue reading GameStrata statistic site launches, get PWN3D via graphs

GameStrata statistic site launches, get PWN3D via graphs originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 29 Jan 2008 06:38:00 EST.

Geometry Wars Galaxies, besides being a baffling display of brightly-colored sparks, is also a pretty neat shooting game. It's somewhat easier to tell what's going on in screenshots than to be dropped right in the middle of gameplay like in the video. If, like us, you couldn't really figure it out, we recommend the screens. That boxart is just a swirly mess of sparks, though. It's like someone superimposed five Rez boxarts together.

Galaxies has some exciting features in store, like co-op play and online leaderboards. We checked with Sierra to inquire about online co-op, and learned that, unfortunately, the online aspect was limited to leaderboards. But the bottom line is that this third-party Wii game uses the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection for something, and that is very promising news.

Owners of both the DS and Wii versions can connect the two and unlock mysterious bonus content. Connecting the games also allows access to the Elite Leaderboard for people who are really good at playing the same game on two systems!

We totally scored like five billion points and it was so AWESOME that we had to call everyone we knew and tell them about it.

Okay, we're embellishing a bit. When we say we "totally scored like five billion points," we mean that we "continue to be awful at Alien Crush despite playing and loving it for eighteen years." But without our humble admission, you'd have no reason to doubt us! And that leads into our discussion.

Simply put, we want leaderboards. We aren't going to get online play in VC games any time soon (or ever,) so we'll ask for the next best thing. We want to be able to see the high scores for games that, you know, have scores. We don't need prizes or anything. We'd be motivated enough by the idea that we could put our three-letter tag (mine: JC!) at the top of a nationwide or worldwide list if we were any good, which we aren't.

Are high score leaderboards worth doing? Do you see value in friendly competition like this? Or did you always flip right past the high score page in old gaming magazines? Perhaps most importantly, what are your high score initials?
Wii Warm Up: Enter initials originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 14 May 2007 09:00:00 EST. Ranked games track your wins and losses, calculating your standing on leaderboards (We can already imagine the problems with early disconnecters.). The Unranked mode allows you to set up a quick round with your friends.

Nintendo hasn't announced a date for the US release yet, but Mario Strikers Charged will hit UK shelves on May 25th. Having previewed the wacky soccer title at GDC, we can't wait to see how well the Wii remote has been integrated and how fleshed out the game's online support will be.

Many of you were disappointed that the leaderboard was full (they only allow 100 people per board), so we decided it was time to add another leaderboard and expand our community. Introducing the Xbox 360 Fanboy Leaderboard Mark II. It's just like the other one, except it features our would be mascot created by Alan Fowle for last month's Lumines contest (pictured on the right). If you couldn't make it onto our first board, head over to MGC and register. If you've already registered for the first one, there's no need to register for the second. Before you go, we need a name for our mascot (assuming Alan is okay with us using it). Allow me to make the first suggestion: Button Face. See? You can do better than that, right?
Presenting the X360F Leaderboard Mk. Obviously, the applications are endless. Imagine separate boards for alcoholics, Dr. Phil fans and readers of this blog. Getting there required the usual combination of obsessive play and obscure Japanese titles, plus some torturous hours with FIFA World Cup 2006. Surprisingly, TheGrayWolf says he wouldn't mind if Microsoft reset all scores to zero. Such is the pressure of being on top.

According to the Wolf, current overall champ RANCE6 has notified his friends list that he will be retiring soon, so the top spot could be in US hands soon.
Meet the highest gamerscore in the USA originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 09 Jul 2006 10:00:00 EST.
