Lissandra the Ice Witch, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/League-of-Legends"><em>League of Legends</em></a>' newest Champion, is now available as part of the game's ongoing <a href="http://na.leagueoflegends.com/news/battle-freljord-begins">battle for the Freljord</a>. Lissandra's abilities favor swift movement and crowd control over excessive damage output, though she seems entirely capable of the latter when need be. The new Champion's <a href="http://riot-web-static.s3.amazonaws.com/images/news/April_2013/04_29_2013_Lissandra_and_Freljord_Skins/Lissandra_Bloodstone_Comic.jpg">Bloodstone skin</a> is on sale for 1462 Riot Points (down from 1950) until the end of the weekend.<br />
<br />
As far as the devious role Lissandra the Ice Witch plays in <em>LoL</em>'s vast mythos, you'll have to scope out the story trailer frozen <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/04/30/league-of-legends-new-champion-is-a-stone-cold-witch/#continued">beyond the veil</a>. In related news, the "Howling Abyss" map added last month is now included in the game's "All Random All Mid," or "ARAM" matchmaking system. A new rerolling mechanic has also been introduced, which allows players a second chance at randomly selecting a character, provided they've earned enough points in previous Howling Abyss matches.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/01/league-of-legends-new-champion-is-a-witchy-woman/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>League of Legends' new Champion is a witchy woman</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/01/league-of-legends-new-champion-is-a-witchy-woman/">League of Legends' new Champion is a witchy woman</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 01 May 2013 04:00:00 EST. There's a jargon to it (littered with player and team names full of weird capitalization and strange spellings) that's about as complicated to understand as the notoriously complex game itself.<br /><br />Riot's Vice President of eSports Dustin Beck even says that a recent tournament he attended was a big mess on its own: "The tournament kept pausing, it never started on time, you didn't have a schedule to know when your favorite teams were playing. It wasn't a fun experience, for me."<br /><br />Still, eSports is one of the biggest factors in <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/league-of-legends"><em>League of Legends</em></a>' overwhelming popularity, with thousands of people attending these tournaments, and millions (almost ten million, in fact) watching live online. So how does Riot plan to smooth out those wrinkles that keep an even larger audience out of the game? The company will take the game into Season 3 within the next few weeks, and with it begins Riot's eSports headliner, the <em>League of Legends</em> Championship Series.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/01/30/riot-games-plan-to-standardize-esports/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Riot Games' plan to standardize eSports</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/01/30/riot-games-plan-to-standardize-esports/">Riot Games' plan to standardize eSports</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 30 Jan 2013 13:00:00 EST. This is no mere tweak: <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&amp;v=3oLAZogcY0k">Riot has completely remade</a> one of the game's three modes.<br /> <br /> As you can see above, there's a new layout and redone art, new map-specific items in the store (no more generic wards!), <em>Dominion</em>-style speed shrines, and special altars with buffs to grab. There's also a new giant spider boss named Vilemaw who, like Baron Nashor, will grant a teamwide bonus when defeated.<br /> <br /> The map is <a href="http://na.leagueoflegends.com/board/showthread.php?t=2690912">still in beta right now</a> and is expected to be considered as such for a while, though the new version is being used in ranked Season 3 play already. Twisted Treeline's 3v3 player variant has almost always been part of <em>League of Legends</em>, but with this revamp <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/10/12/league-of-legends-claims-title-of-most-played-video-game-in-the/"><em>LoL</em>'s millions of players</a> have gained yet another way to experience the game.</div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/10/25/psa-new-twisted-treeline-map-now-live-in-league-of-legends/">PSA: New Twisted Treeline map now live in League of Legends</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 25 Oct 2012 23:00:00 EST. Riot Games issued multiple "unsportsmanlike conduct" warnings and slapped one player, Azubu Frost's Woong, with a $30,000 fine (20 percent of the $150,000 prize for advancing to the semifinals).<br /><br />Still, the tournament ended on time and with a clear winner. Congratulations, TPA, and may the odds be ever in your favor.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/10/15/tpa-takes-home-trophy-in-league-of-legends-world-championship/">TPA takes home trophy in League of Legends World Championship</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 15 Oct 2012 14:00:00 EST. LeagueofLegends.co was <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/08/20/riot-games-reclaims-leagueoflegends-co-domain-from-adult-site/">previously awarded to the company</a> by the World Intellectual Property Organization from the clutches of a domain squatter, and now LeagueofLegendsPorn.com <a href="http://fusible.com/2012/10/riot-games-wins-dispute-over-league-of-legends-porn-domain-name/">has been reclaimed by Riot for its own use</a>. The case actually closed in late September, but the ruling came online earlier this week.<br /><br />Those looking for some racy pics of Miss Fortune or Akali getting it on, however, will be disappointed: The site never actually hosted any adult material, and now that Riot owns it, probably never will. But Riot is slowly securing its various domain name holdings online, making it easier for the company to connect players up to big company events like <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/10/06/psa-league-of-legends-playoffs-continue-today/">the recent World Championships in LA</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/10/09/league-of-legends-developer-wins-another-porn-domain-case/">League of Legends developer wins another porn domain case</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 09 Oct 2012 23:00:00 EST. Honor is something that players will be able to distribute amongst each other after every matchmaking game. After finishing matches, players will be able to award either their teammates or opponents with Honor for being friendly, helpful, or for showing great teamwork in the game they just played.<br /><br />Honor is "not a currency," says Riot (and it can't be traded or spammed), but it will be used to recognize worthy players over time, and the company says it is looking into possible "bonuses for the most Honorable summoners." For a long time, <em>League of Legends</em> players have been able to "report" each other for negative actions like being offensive or leaving a game early, but Honor seems designed to go the other way and reward positive actions instead. It remains to be seen how it will play out in the future. Riot is experimenting here, to see how players use the system before it's fully implemented.<br /><br />Valve's <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/dota-2"><em>Dota 2</em></a> also has some <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/13/dota-2-detailed-includes-all-100-characters-and-new-social-fea/">innovative social features</a> planned, including a reward system like this for working together with other players in the game. These MOBA games are very complicated to play, and so companies like Riot and Valve are doing their best to get players to work together and create a solid community, rather than lose new players to widespread offensive behavior.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/10/01/league-of-legends-honor-system-is-now-live/">League of Legends 'Honor' system is now live</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 01 Oct 2012 21:30:00 EST. Monolith has taken the PC-centric gameplay of the emerging MOBA (or <em>DotA</em>, or <em>LoL</em>, or even action RTS, whatever you like to call it) genre, and translated it over to a console and a controller. But since that first play at E3, I've gotten a few more chances to play the game at Comic-Con and PAX. GOME (acronyms!) is more than just a console clone of the popular <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/league-of-legends"><em>League of Legends</em></a> and the upcoming <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/dota-2"><em>Dota 2</em></a>.<br /><br />Monolith has iterated on this complex strategy/action genre in a few different ways. Here's a list of five different things, whether you're a level 30 summoner or a Venomancer newbie, that you'll find new and interesting about <em>Guardians of Middle-earth</em> when it arrives for consoles later this year.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/09/05/how-guardians-of-middle-earth-innovates-on-the-moba-gametype/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>How Guardians of Middle-earth innovates on the MOBA gametype</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/09/05/how-guardians-of-middle-earth-innovates-on-the-moba-gametype/">How Guardians of Middle-earth innovates on the MOBA gametype</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 05 Sep 2012 12:00:00 EST. As such, both teams have been disqualified, and no placements or prize money will be awarded."<br /><br />Curse NA put out a <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ujijaucr4Yw&amp;feature=g-u-u">video</a> stating the issue surrounds agreeing with Team Dignitas that the first round of the match should be an "ARAM," but that no other agreements were made. The acronym stands for "all random all middle," meaning both teams picked champions at random and played only the middle lane. It's a player-created match style, like if two major sports teams agreed to play baseball with one base or basketball using half the court.<br /><br />Senior Vice President Lee Chen of Major League Gaming denies the defense, writing on <a href="https://twitter.com/MLGLee/status/239882716609400832">Twitter</a>: "To be clear here folks, the collusion had nothing to do with the ARAM. CRS/DIG conspired to split prize money."<br /><br />The third and fourth place teams will receive the prize money for the event. MLG states although there is contention over the exact nature of the violation, that "both teams, as well as MLG and [<em>League of Legends</em> developer] Riot" agree that not playing a tournament match to win warrants disqualification.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/08/27/mlg-league-of-legends-summer-championship-winners-disqualified-f/">MLG League of Legends Summer Championship winners disqualified for 'collusion'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 27 Aug 2012 19:00:00 EST. Those same players will likely also tell you that the game has a tremendously steep learning curve. With more than 100 playable champions, a dizzying array of items and demanding gameplay, getting to know the ropes is no easy feat. Speaking with senior producer Travis George at Gamescom, I asked how developer Riot Games was going to address the issue of easing players into <em>League of Legends</em>.<br /><br />The game already features bot training and a spectator mode, but what other systems could Riot implement to acclimate new players? His answer surprised me: The problem isn't the learning curve, it's the community.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/league-of-legends-gamescom-2012/">League of Legends (Gamescom 2012)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/league-of-legends-gamescom-2012/#5228115"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/08/1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/league-of-legends-gamescom-2012/#5228117"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/08/2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/league-of-legends-gamescom-2012/#5228118"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/08/3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/league-of-legends-gamescom-2012/#5228119"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/08/4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/league-of-legends-gamescom-2012/#5228120"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/08/5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/08/22/solving-the-league-of-legends-community-problem-one-player-at-a/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Solving the League of Legends community problem one player at a time</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/08/22/solving-the-league-of-legends-community-problem-one-player-at-a/">Solving the League of Legends community problem one player at a time</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 22 Aug 2012 15:20:00 EST. The case on the World Intellectual Property Organization website <a href="http://www.wipo.int/amc/en/domains/search/case.jsp?case_id=24391">has been terminated</a>, and the domain is currently listed as owned by Riot Games, the company behind <a href="http://joystiq.com/games/league-of-legends">the popular MOBA game of the same name</a>.<br /><br />Those looking for illicit material on a <em>League of Legends</em>-related website will presumably have to go elsewhere. Like, for example, LeagueOfLegendsPorn.com, which is another (currently empty) domain that <a href="http://www.wipo.int/amc/en/domains/search/case.jsp?case_id=24360">Riot has another standing complaint</a> against. Because Riot does own the "<em>League of Legends</em>" trademark, that case will probably see a similar result soon. And now that Riot has secured the URLs we know about, are they <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/06/16/riot-games-registers-url-for-supremacy/">going to tell us what <em>Supremacy</em> is</a> anytime soon?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/08/20/riot-games-reclaims-leagueoflegends-co-domain-from-adult-site/">Riot games reclaims LeagueOfLegends.co domain from adult site</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 20 Aug 2012 22:30:00 EST. Well dry those eyes, friend! It's gonna be hard to hold onto that grudge because today industry legends Sid Meier and Keiji Inafune have both been added to the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/gdc-2012">GDC</a> talk docket, as well as <em>League of Legends</em> proprietors, Riot Games. But hey, if you're not going to GDC, feel free to keep crying while you read the rest of this post.<br /><br />Meier's talk, entitled "Interesting Decisions," will revolve around his viewpoint of gameplay as "a series of interesting decisions" and how developers can recognize and add these kinds of decisions, ultimately providing the player with a more fulfilling experience. Maybe he'll also talk a bit how that philosophy will play into <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/xcom-enemy-unknown"><em>XCOM: Enemy Unknown</em></a>?<br /><br />Inafune will aim to analyze the current state of the Japanese game industry in his sixty-minute talk, "The Future of Japanese Games." Along with his unnamed cohorts, he'll delve into the current problems facing the region and analyze the past success of Japanese game development. We imagine he'll also probably suffer through a lot of questions about <em>Mega Man</em>.<br /><br />Finally, Riot Games offers a postmortem on its successful Dominion expansion for its runaway hit, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/league-of-legends"><em>League of Legends</em></a>. Lead producer Travis George will offer insight into the expansion's genesis, all the way through production and launch.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/24/sid-meier-keiji-inafune-and-riot-games-folks-added-to-gdc-semin/">Sid Meier, Keiji Inafune and Riot Games folks added to GDC seminar list</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 24 Jan 2012 23:00:00 EST. "When we put it out there, we put it out there with sort of the sole intent of having new players get an introduction to <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/league-of-legends"><em>League of Legends</em></a>."<br /><br />But what the company found was that the game mode, which takes some of the human element out of the MOBA genre's relatively steep learning curve, was actually being used by all sorts of players. "One thing that kept coming up was the majority of the people who play<em> League of Legends</em> will play, every week, at least one co-op vs. AI game. And it's actually the primary game mode for a surprisingly large percentage of players."<br /><br />With that insight, then, it's probably not surprising to hear that Riot is updating the co-op vs. AI game mode, enabling AI bots for 40 of the game's champion characters, as well as adding play on the Dominion game mode to the mix.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/24/league-of-legends-updates-co-op-vs-ai-mode-more-improvements-c/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>League of Legends updates co-op vs. AI mode, more improvements coming</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/24/league-of-legends-updates-co-op-vs-ai-mode-more-improvements-c/">League of Legends updates co-op vs. AI mode, more improvements coming</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 24 Jan 2012 14:30:00 EST. Riot Games, the studio behind the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/26/league-of-legends-surpasses-15m-registered-players-1-4m-play-da/">incredibly successful</a> <em>League of Legends</em>, has posted a statement in opposition to the "Stop Online Piracy Act" (<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/SOPA/">SOPA</a>) and "PROTECT IP Act" (PIPA). The company notes that preventing piracy of copyrighted content is a "laudable goal," but that SOPA/PIPA go beyond addressing piracy.<br />
<br />
The company laid out that the legislation would affect its fans in a number of ways. It's concerned about streaming services being shut down for non-malicious use of copyrighted material, and the threat such laws would have on creation and sharing sites such as YouTube, Reddit and DeviantArt, along with streaming websites, including Own3d and Twitch. In-house, Riot notes features such as in-game chat and forums could be cut back to avoid potential threats.<br />
<br />
Riot is <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/06/sopa-list-esa/">not a member for the ESA</a>, the video game industry's political arm, which is in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/03/esa-stands-behind-proposed-sopa-legislation-issues-statement/">support of the legislation</a>.<br />
<br />
Riot also mentions that both acts "raise serious constitutional free speech issues, and could even compromise the basic security infrastructure of the internet." The statement concludes, "While we do support efforts to prevent online piracy, the current form of this legislation comes at far too high a cost for us, our players, and online communities across the internet."<br />

Riot Games has <a href="http://na.leagueoflegends.com/news/season-two-has-arrived">kicked off Season Two</a> of <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/league-of-legends"><em>League of Legends</em></a>, bringing the promised updates to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/11/18/league-of-legends-surpasses-11-5-million-active-players/">the extremely popular</a> free-to-play title. The new update means that all players have had their masteries reset, <a href="http://na.leagueoflegends.com/news/inside-design-summoner-spells-and-season-two">the new Summoner Spell changes</a> are in and running, and the beta version of the game's "Spectator Mode" is now available on a limited basis.<br />
<br />
The new update also <a href="http://competitive.na.leagueoflegends.com/">introduces the game's Competitive Site</a>, in which players can see their newly created ranked teams and standings, and follow along in <a href="http://competitive.na.leagueoflegends.com/competitive/season-2/introduction">the race for Season Two's $5 million prize</a>. That's where players can rank up online, and then eventually be invited to live events around the world, culminating in the World Championship.<br />
<br />
Good luck to all of you <em>League of Legends</em> players out there, and if you really are gunning for the top be sure to guarantee there's a <a href="http://na.leagueoflegends.com/champions/105/fizz_the_tidal_trickster">Fizz</a> on your team. That fish is totally overpowered in mid game right now.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/11/22/league-of-legends-season-two-underway-now/">League of Legends Season Two underway now</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 22 Nov 2011 23:00:00 EST. Riot Games has announced that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/26/league-of-legends-season-two-details-creep-out/">Season Two</a> will bring <a href="http://na.leagueoflegends.com/news/rally-your-friends-ranked-teams-are-coming">ranked team play</a> to the online MOBA title <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/league-of-legends"><em>League of Legends</em></a>. Previously, players have had their own individual gameplay rankings, but starting with the game's Season Two update, teams will be able to form up on either the 5v5 or 3v3 maps, and get their own rankings as a group. Teams will need a captain to create and invite or remove members, and will be able to choose a name and tag to go with their rating.<br />
<br />
The company is also <a href="http://na.leagueoflegends.com/news/inside-design-summoner-spells-and-season-two">tweaking the in-game Summoner Spell abilities</a>. The Rally and Fortify spells, which Riot calls "underused," are being removed from play, and in their place will be Surge and Promote. Surge will allow Summoners who chose it to boost themselves up with an aura buff, empowering their champions and anyone around them with extra combat effectiveness. And the Promote spell has made its way over from <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/26/league-of-legends-dominion-ready-for-summoning/">the Dominion gametype</a>, so players who choose it will be able to beef up a minion in the standard game now.<br />
<br />
Season Two doesn't have a release date yet, but it will also bring the long-awaited Spectator Mode to the game, which has already been seen on the servers in preview form. Odds are that we don't have too much longer to wait for the full update.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/11/09/league-of-legends-announces-ranked-team-play-summoner-spell-cha/">League of Legends announces ranked team play, Summoner Spell changes</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 09 Nov 2011 08:00:00 EST. Riot Games CEO Brandon Beck gave the closing keynote at last week's IGDA Leadership Forum in Los Angeles, California, and during the talk (in which he made the point that "Riot's secret weapon all along" has been its employees), he gave a few interesting examples of how Riot's staff had really gone the extra distance to turn <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/league-of-legends"><em>League of Legends</em></a> into the successful online phenomenon it is today.<br />
<br />
His first example was about the matchmaking system -- originally, Riot struggled to make sure that players were matched up against each other in an interesting and effective way, and the company ended up bringing in not a game developer, but a programmer with a PhD in computational biology whose "thinking was radically different and compelling," according to Beck.<br />
<br />
A month after this hire, the company had a whole new matchmaking system, and in the end, it turned out to be "too fair" -- the games were too close. Since "what players remember are the outliers," according to Beck, the team developed "snowball items," which were "risky purchases that rewarded flawless execution." That bit of gameplay mixed up the matches, and came to be the system the game uses today.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/29/riot-games-close-calls-with-disaster/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Riot Games' close calls with disaster</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/29/riot-games-close-calls-with-disaster/">Riot Games' close calls with disaster</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 29 Oct 2011 18:30:00 EST. With the first season of <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/league-of-legends"><em>League of Legends</em></a> over and done, Riot is beginning to share details about Season Two. Throughout the year, players will compete for a piece of the previously announced $5 million prize pool, with the final championship tournament taking up a full $2 million.<br />
<br />
Also part of the season two festivities, Riot has begun a limited beta of the League of Legends Spectator Mode, previously available only on the game's tournament realm. True to its name, this spectator mode allows players to watch games without participating. Players will be able to see both sides of the game, examine stats, builds and even turn off the fog of war. For now, spectating is limited to custom matches only - no matchmade games, in other words - though Riot plans to expand functionality in the future. Also, spectator mode will only be available during "designated testing periods." A quick check has revealed that, as of this writing, now is <em>not</em> one of those periods.<br />
<br />
Summoners who like to watch should check out <a href="http://na.leagueoflegends.com/spectator-faq">spectator mode FAQ</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/26/league-of-legends-season-two-details-creep-out/">League of Legends season two details creep out</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 26 Oct 2011 17:00:00 EST. Less than a week after entering a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/21/league-of-legends-dominion-enters-limited-beta/">random-timing</a> public beta, <em>League of Legends</em>' <em>Dominion</em> mode is now available.<br />
<br />
"Nearly a year in the making, <em>League of Legends: Dominion</em> represents the largest and most ambitious update to <em>League of Legends</em> since its launch in October of 2009," Riot stated in its <a href="http://na.leagueoflegends.com/news/league-legends-dominion-available-now">release announcement</a>. "<em>League of Legends: Dominion</em> is the latest example of our ongoing commitment to bringing you the best of the MOBA genre in new and innovative ways."<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/04/league-of-legends-dominion-preview/"><em>Dominion</em> tweaks</a> the Multiplayer Online Battle Arena genre of "attack a base" by shifting the action to several capture points. Those who've played <em>Battlefield</em>'s Conquest mode or most any other game's "king of the hill" will catch on quickly. <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/league-of-legends-dominion/">League of Legends: Dominion</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/league-of-legends-dominion/#4343914"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/08/dominion-art-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/league-of-legends-dominion/#4343915"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/08/dominion-art-2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/league-of-legends-dominion/#4343916"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/08/dominion-art-3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/league-of-legends-dominion/#4343917"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/08/dominion-art-4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/league-of-legends-dominion/#4343918"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/08/capture-the-claw_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/26/league-of-legends-dominion-ready-for-summoning/">League of Legends: Dominion ready for summoning</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 26 Sep 2011 11:00:00 EST. The eagerly anticipated <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/04/league-of-legends-dominion-preview/"><em>League of Legends: Dominion</em> mode</a> is almost upon summoners, with Riot Games flipping the switch on the game's "limited beta" today.<br />
<br />
"Over the coming days, we'll be opening testing windows on our platforms during off-peak hours, each of which will be prefaced by a forum announcement to let you know you can and participate," Riot announced a short time ago. "And if you miss one of the testing windows, remember that there will be plenty more opportunities to help test <em>Dominion</em> as we speed toward launch!"<br />
<br />
The first test window is right now for "approximately two hours." There's no word yet on when <em>Dominion</em> will officially launch for <em>League of Legends</em>' <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/26/league-of-legends-surpasses-15m-registered-players-1-4m-play-da/">millions of players</a>.<br />

The "freemium" business model has infected a wide swath of the gaming universe, from casual Facebook games, to shooters, MMOs and all manner of mobile offerings, and for good reason: These games hemorrhage cash money. That free-flowing river of <em>skrill</em> has to come from somewhere, though, and the mobile research group Flurry seems to have found an answer. <br />
<br />
Drawing from a sample size of approximately 20 million users across 110 thousand Android and iOS apps, Flurry has determined that people aged 25 to 34 are responsible for <em>49 percent</em> of the money spent on content in freemium titles. Interestingly, users between the ages of 18 to 24 <em>played</em> the most, contributing 32 percent of overall playtime, but they actually spent far less than their wizened elders. No specific dollar amounts were referenced, but we have a feeling they'd be <a href="http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2011/6/10/">fairly significant</a>. <p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/10/freemium-isnt-free-25-to-34-year-olds-spend-the-most-on-extra/">Freemium isn't free: 25 to 34 year olds spend the most on extra content</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 10 Sep 2011 20:30:00 EST. Riot Games has officially canceled OSX support for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/league-of-legends"><em>League of Legends</em></a>, concluding after 13 months of work with TransGaming and Mac beta-testing. The Mac beta client will be shut down "indefinitely" at 12 a.m. on September 6, this Tuesday. <em>LoL</em> Mac-ers, if you didn't have plans for Labor Day on Monday, now you do. Riot hasn't eliminated the possibility of a Mac version in the future, but it won't be any time soon.<br />
<blockquote class="bq-standard">
	"We realize our current approach regarding the Mac platform won't guarantee the quality and frequent updates we deliver today on the PC and are expected by our player community. We will continue to investigate the opportunity to provide player access on the Mac Platform in the future that aligns with our service and content update standards. We are committed to building a solution that will work on the Mac in the long run, but it will take some time."</blockquote>
Mac beta testers who used the store can keep their accounts open and continue playing on PC, or receive a full refund on their purchases, which would close the account entirely. As consolation, Riot will give all Mac testers a code to unlock the Champions Pack, which can be redeemed if a majority of your logins come from the Mac client and you enter the Store before service is shut down Tuesday.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/04/league-of-legends-will-shut-down-its-mac-client-tuesday-so-play/">League of Legends will shut down its Mac client Tuesday, so play now</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 04 Sep 2011 13:30:00 EST. Smell that? That gentle, wafting scent in the breeze? That unique blend of concession-stand popcorn, USB and <em>pwn</em>? It's a specific, enticing fragrance that can only mean one thing: It's time for Major League Gaming finals, and you can watch it all live on Joystiq!<br />

Last year, 254,000 individuals <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/23/gamescom-2010-grew-to-254-000-attendees/">attended</a> Gamescom. This year that figure <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/21/gamescom-2011-welcomes-275-000-attendees/">grew</a> to 275,000 and amongst those attendees, 223,000 stopped by the ESL (Electronic Sports League) arena to check out competitive gaming live in both <em>StarCraft 2 </em>and <em>League of Legends<em>, </em></em>as well as several console titles. Perhaps more impressive was the ESL's live feed, which was visited by 500 percent more people than last year.<br />
<br />
Turtle Entertainment, the organizer of ESL at Gamescom, is clearly happy with the turnout of what was the first stop on the ESL Pro Series Winter season 2011, Germany's national video game league. "The response of the visitors in our hall was overwhelmingly positive," said Turtle Entertainment's managing director Ralf Reichert. "Gamescom has proven once again that eSports has thousands of enthusiastic followers, not only in the world but also in Germany."<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/27/esports-draw-record-viewership-numbers-at-gamescom/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>eSports draw record viewership numbers at Gamescom</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/27/esports-draw-record-viewership-numbers-at-gamescom/">eSports draw record viewership numbers at Gamescom</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 27 Aug 2011 02:30:00 EST. The second competitive season of <em>League of Legends </em>begins this fall, with a five million dollar prize pool on the line, reportedly the largest in eSports history. "Players will certainly step up their game in season two - so it's only fair that we step up ours," says Brandon Beck, CEO of Riot Games.<br />
<br />
The <em>League of Legends</em> season one championship drew in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/22/league-of-legends-championship-draws-nearly-1-7-million-viewers/">1.69 million online viewers</a>, with 210,000 unique viewers for the finale. The game itself now has over 15 million registered players, with over <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/26/league-of-legends-surpasses-15m-registered-players-1-4m-play-da/">3.6 million monthly active users</a> (over 1.4 million playing daily). Riot Games will also add the new <em>League of Legends</em> mode, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/04/league-of-legends-dominion-preview/">Dominion</a></em>, sometimes after PAX.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/15/league-of-legends-second-season-esporting-5m-prize-pool/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>League of Legends second season esporting $5M prize pool</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/15/league-of-legends-second-season-esporting-5m-prize-pool/">League of Legends second season esporting $5M prize pool</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 15 Aug 2011 11:45:00 EST. Perhaps our hefty <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/04/league-of-legends-dominion-preview/">preview</a> of the upcoming Dominion mode in <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/league-of-legends"><em>League of Legends</em></a> wasn't enough. <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/league-of-legends"><em>League of Legends</em></a> recently reached <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/26/riot-ceo-brandon-beck-on-forging-success-with-league-of-legends/">a total of 15 million registered players</a>. Perhaps the most surprising thing is that all of those players have played their matches on just two different maps, one made specifically for <em>Defense of the Ancients</em>-style 5v5 play, and one made for 3v3 combat (there are a few other maps in the game, but they're used for training, not full game modes).<br />

That's about to change. Last week, Riot Games invited Joystiq over to its headquarters in Santa Monica, California, to see a brand new game mode for the online competitive title. It's coming along with what Senior Producer Travis George calls "the biggest update we've ever made for <em>League of Legends</em>," a new content release subtitled <em>Dominion</em>.<br />
<br />
Dominion is a brand new gametype and is especially notable because all of the games in the growing DotA (or MOBA) genre have basically used the same premise: two armies of minions fight with equal strength across a series of parallel lanes, and player champions fight minions and each other to gain ground and win the battle. <em>Dominion</em>, however, is a brand new set of rules, combining elements of the DotA genre with scoring, much more akin to EA's <em>Battlefield</em> games or <em>Call of Duty</em>'s Domination mode.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/league-of-legends-dominion/">League of Legends: Dominion</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/league-of-legends-dominion/#4343914"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/08/dominion-art-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/league-of-legends-dominion/#4343915"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/08/dominion-art-2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/league-of-legends-dominion/#4343916"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/08/dominion-art-3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/league-of-legends-dominion/#4343917"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/08/dominion-art-4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/league-of-legends-dominion/#4343918"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/08/capture-the-claw_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div>

Riot Games has announced player numbers for its extremely popular <em>League of Legends</em> title, and they're pretty phenomenal. With over 15 million registered players, the <em>Defense of the Ancients</em>-style online multiplayer RTS can now brush shoulders with games like Blizzard's <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/world-of-warcraft"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a> (<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/07/wow-reaches-12-million-concurrent-subscribers/">12 million players</a>), <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/call-of-duty"><em>Call of Duty</em></a> (<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/26/call-of-duty-4-reaches-13-million-players-on-xbox-live/">13 million players on Xbox Live</a>), and <em>The Sims</em> (<a href="http://www.tmcnet.com/usubmit/2005/feb/1114806.htm">16 million copies sold</a>), as one of the biggest PC games in history. Granted, as a free-to-play title that relies on microtransactions for revenue, <em>League of Legends</em> has more access to a wider audience than games driven by retail sales or subscriptions. But there's no question at all that this is a huge and exceptionally popular game.<br />
<br />
Joystiq got to talk with CEO and co-founder of Riot Brandon Beck about today's announcement, and he says that even the company was surprised by how big <em>LoL</em> (as it's called in shorthand) has gotten. "The growth of the <em>League of Legends</em> community far exceeded our expectations," he tells us. "We are proud of the numbers we are hitting on our platform and are confident our fantastic team can continue to grow and evolve our PvP.net technology to handle even greater numbers."<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/26/riot-ceo-brandon-beck-on-forging-success-with-league-of-legends/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Riot CEO Brandon Beck on forging success with League of Legends</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/26/riot-ceo-brandon-beck-on-forging-success-with-league-of-legends/">Riot CEO Brandon Beck on forging success with League of Legends</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 26 Jul 2011 08:20:00 EST. Riot Games announced today that <em>League of Legends</em> has over 15 million registered players, with 3.6 million monthly active users and over 1.4 million playing daily. The company also revealed its peak concurrency (number of those <em>LoL</em>ing at the same time) as over half a million players. This is the first time the company has publicly shared its user numbers since launching in October 2009.<br />
<br />
The <em>League of Legends</em> Season One Championship drew in over <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/22/league-of-legends-championship-draws-nearly-1-7-million-viewers/">1.69 million online viewers</a>, with 210,000 checking in for the final match. Riot Games plans to expand <em>LoL</em> in 2011 to Southeast Asia and China, home of its <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/08/riot-games-marc-merrill-on-the-tencent-acquisition-and-the-futu/">parent company</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/tencent/">Tencent</a>. Riot also made headlines recently with the human acquisition of <em>Mass Effect 2</em> lead gameplay designer <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/12/mass-effect-gameplay-lead-christina-norman-now-at-riot-games/">Christina Norman</a>, who has taken a lead designer role.<br />

Christina Norman, lead gameplay designer for <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/mass-effect-2"><em>Mass Effect 2</em></a>, announced on Twitter today that she has taken a new Lead Designer position at <em>League of Legends</em> developer Riot Games.<br />
<br />
Last week, Norman <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/truffle/status/88019901687668736">announced</a> that she was leaving BioWare and moving to Los Angeles, but didn't disclose the identity of her new employer until today. Preston Watamaniuk, <em>Mass Effect</em> series lead designer, will take Norman's place at BioWare.<br />
<br />
"I'm looking forward to working with Riot on innovative new approaches to game design and game development in the rapidly-changing video game market," Norman told <a href="http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/35594/Former_Mass_Effect_2_3_Lead_Gameplay_Designer_Joins_Riot_Games.php">Gamasutra</a>. <em>League of Legends</em> and Riot are emblematic of these changes, as a free-to-play, microtransaction-based game developed by a company recently <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/09/riot-games-confirms-tencent-majority-buyout/">acquired</a> by China's Tencent.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/12/mass-effect-gameplay-lead-christina-norman-now-at-riot-games/">Mass Effect gameplay lead Christina Norman now at Riot Games</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 12 Jul 2011 13:30:00 EST.
