It's true, we didn't hear much about <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/zelda"><em>The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass</em></a> at <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/11/our-keynote-reactions-let-us-tell-you-them/">Nintendo's E3 keynote</a>. But Nintendo discreetly dropped some images into a press release and stuffed them into our briefcase, giving us the notion that if they happened to be shown to you guys, it wouldn't be <em>terrible.</em><br /><br />A few new screenshots have been added to the gallery, as well as some character art. One of the pieces is the same artwork used in the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/06/possible-english-language-phantom-hourglass-box/">supposed US boxart</a>, which, to us, confirms the validity of that boxart. Man, the <em>Wind Waker</em> art style still out-styles pretty much everything else out there, especially in mainstream AAA games. Sorry, <em>every other game.<br /></em><br /><em></em><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/11/e307-zelda-screens-and-delightful-artwork/">E307: Zelda screens and delightful artwork</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 11 Jul 2007 20:40:00 EST. Designed to be played without ever being touched, its harmonies have been described as "music from the ether." Sounds wild? This was all dreamed up by Russian physicist Lev Termen in 1919. He later went on to invent motion detectors for automated doors and KGB espionage devices. Head past the post break for video of Randy's performance. </p><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/23/theremin-theme-the-legend-of-zelda/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Theremin theme: The Legend of Zelda</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/23/theremin-theme-the-legend-of-zelda/">Theremin theme: The Legend of Zelda</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 23 Jun 2007 16:00:00 EST. After a year of waiting, Tingle's trusty UK fanbase will be appeased with the release of <em>Freshly Picked - Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland</em> on September 14. <br /><br />Originally released in Japan in September 2006, <em>Freshly Picked </em>is a unique action RPG that has Tingle traveling to various islands, solving puzzles and battling enemies all in the pursuit of rupees. Given the title character's poor standing with western audiences, we're as surprised as anyone that this <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/zelda">Zelda</a> spinoff is being localized for the English market, and didn't just stay in Japan <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/07/11/zelda-spinoff-rpg-to-star-tingle-in-a-pink-colored-rupee-land/">as we all <strike>hoped</strike> thought it would</a>.<br /><br />Well before Tingle-mania reaches their shores, European DS owners will also be getting a handful of first-rate portable titles. <em>Metroid Prime Pinball</em> was just released this past week; <em>Brain Age 2</em> will be landing on June 29 (well before the North American launch date); <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/06/elite-beat-agents-rocks-up-in-europe-july-13th/"><em>Elite Beat Agents</em></a> is out on July 13th, and <em>Pok&eacute;mon Diamond and Pearl </em>will be taking over the lives of British children on July 27.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/22/tingle-rpg-headed-to-uk-but-normal-games-are-too/">Tingle RPG headed to UK, but normal games are too!</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 22 Jun 2007 18:05:00 EST. <br />If you're lucky enough to have a Hastings store nearby, the entertainment retailer is offering to exchange your moth-eaten copies of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/superpapermario"><em>Super Paper Mario</em></a> or <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/zelda"><em>The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess</em></a> for a waggle-fied edition of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/re4"><em>Resident Evil 4</em></a>. They'll also accept <em>Rainbow Six Vegas</em> (360) and <em>God of War II</em> (PS2), but not without scowling at you first.<br /><br />According to the rest of Hastings's weekly ad, there's a buy-1-get-2nd-for-free sale on body jewelry, so be on the look out for that deal too! Put away the other two <em>RE4</em> games you've already bought for previous platforms, throw on a shirt that shows off your belly-button-ringed midriff, and check past the post break for the full flyer.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/22/trade-in-your-old-ports-for-a-new-port/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Trade in your old ports for a new port</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/22/trade-in-your-old-ports-for-a-new-port/">Trade in your old ports for a new port</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 22 Jun 2007 16:10:00 EST. Respected Japanese gaming publication <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Famitsu/">Famitsu</a> has reportedly given <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/LegendofZelda/">Legend of Zelda:</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/PhantomHourglass/">Phantom Hourglass</a></em> a near-perfect 39 out of 40 score, according to <a href="http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=166276">CVG</a>. That number is based on four reviewers -- three giving the DS adventure a perfect 10, and one dissenter only awarding 9 points.<br /><br /><em>Phantom Hourglass </em>is the 17th game to earn a near-perfect score of 39 (<em>A Link to the Past</em> was the first). Two <em>Zelda</em> titles to have earned perfect scores are <em>Wind Waker</em>, which was the sixth game ever to earn a perfect score from the publication, and <em>Ocarina of Time</em>, which was the very first. [<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Famitsu#Perfect_scores">Source</a>] So yeah, Famitsu really loves <em>Legend of Zelda</em>. They want to <em>marry</em> <em>Legend of Zelda</em> and then get divorced and cite "irreconcilable differences." It's hard to understand, we'll explain it when you're older.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/20/famitsu-loves-zelda-gives-phantom-hourglass-near-perfect-score/">Famitsu loves Zelda, gives Phantom Hourglass near-perfect score</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 20 Jun 2007 19:50:00 EST. Ever wanted to read a novelization of the <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/LegendofZelda/">Legend of Zelda</a></em> series? No? Well, we've got one for you, anyways.<br /><br />A blogger known as Grownup Gamer has begun a project where he will be writing extensively about every game in the <em>Legend of Zelda</em> series in chronological order. We can't emphasize the word "extensive" enough -- each entry is extremely detailed, but <a href="http://bloggingzelda.blogspot.com/">Blogging Zelda</a> fortunately is well-written enough to be an interesting read. <br /><br />Grownup Gamer has actually been blogging since the <a href="http://bloggingzelda.blogspot.com/2007/05/introductions.html">end of May</a>, spending just under two weeks to complete the first and second quests in the original NES <em>Zelda</em>. He is currently mowing through <em>Zelda II: The Adventures of Link</em>. <a href="http://blog.mainetechgeeks.com/2007/05/happy_memorial_day.html">Fifteen titles</a> in all have been planned for completion, including the yet-to-be-released <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/PhantomHourglass/">Phantom Hourglass</a>.</em><br /><br /><strong>See Also:<a href="http://www.dsfanboy.com/2007/06/08/the-shields-of-zelda/"><br /></a></strong><a href="javascript:void(0);/*1182232559354*/">The Shields of Zelda</a><br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.4colorrebellion.com/archives/2007/06/18/the-legend-of-zelda-the-blog-of-blogging/">4cr</a>; <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/03/zelda-ds-lite-mod-demands-slew-of-positive-adjectives/">image source</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/19/blogging-through-every-legend-of-zelda/">Blogging through every Legend of Zelda</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 19 Jun 2007 04:15:00 EST. With <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/phantomhourglass">Zelda: Phantom Hourglass</a> nearly released--well, for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/11/zelda-phantom-hourglass-hits-japan-in-june-this-june/">Japanese gamers</a>, that is--GameTrailers has posted a few brief gameplay clips that show the touchscreen controls. Gamers outside of Japan will have to wait until later this year to play the DS RPG/adventure. (Make the wait even longer by watching <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/08/zelda-phantom-hourglass-japanese-commercials/">Japanese commercials</a> for the game.)<br /><br />Start forming opinions on the controls. After the break, watch demos of movement, swordplay, and curved boomerang throws, all handled with the stylus.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/14/todays-most-stylistic-video-ds-zelda-controls/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Today's most stylistic video: DS Zelda controls</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/14/todays-most-stylistic-video-ds-zelda-controls/">Today's most stylistic video: DS Zelda controls</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 14 Jun 2007 00:00:00 EST. The clips mimic the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/07/zelda-commercials-provide-whole-seconds-of-gameplay-footage/">commercials</a> that've been advertising the handheld adventure in Japan, showing off Link's new touchscreen movement and controls. We know that you hate to pay long-distance fees for visiting sites outside of the country, so we went ahead and embedded the movies after the post break. Really, there's no need to thank us -- let's just say you owe us one.<br /></div>

What do you think of the new look? <span style="font-style: italic;">Wind Waker</span> fans should recognize the crustacean shape, as it originally showed up on our hero's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/04/finally-a-use-for-pants/">pajamas</a> in the GameCube game. <br /><br />Link's shield has been as much a staple of the <a href="http://dsfanboy.com/tag/zelda">Zelda series</a> as the adventurer's green cap, deflecting octorok attacks and pushing away charging enemies. Over the past two decades, the defensive device's design has evolved much from its original cross emblem to incorporate Triforces, various winged figures, and decorative accents. <br /><br />We've collected over a dozen of the different layouts that we spotted at <a href="http://www.thehylia.com/">The Hylia</a>, leaving out mirror shields and other deviations (e.g. Ordon shield), and have lined them up for you to compare and constrast after the post break. After approximately 325 different and generally inappropriate permutations, we finally concluded that the above and dreadfully straightforward headline would be best suited to conveying the arrival of today's four new old <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/virtualconsolemonday">Virtual Console</a> games. "Zelda Moons Midori on Funkotron" was certainly a viable option, but it simply inspired the wrong sort of mental image. We actually want you to envision these four games arriving on the Wii's Virtual Console service at 9AM PST today:<br />
<ul>
    <li><em>Milon's Secret Castle (</em>NES, 1 player, 500 Wii Points): Though it's not much of a <em>secret</em> castle if the title gives it away, it certainly is one that adheres to video game tradition. Expect to rescue a princess and several valuable items -- musical instruments in this case -- within its recesses.<br /></li>
    <li><em>ToeJam &amp; Earl in Panic on Funkotron</em> (Genesis, 1-2 players, 800 Wii Points): Video game tradition is given the boot here, with amusingly mismatched aliens, <em>Toejam &amp; Earl,</em> saving their planet by ridding it of a human scourge.<br /></li>
    <li><em>Dead Moon </em>(TurboGrafx16, 1 player, 600 Wii Points): Alright, now we're back to protecting the Earth from alien invasion. It's why we have side-scrolling shooters like this one.<br /></li>
    <li><em>Zelda II: The Adventure of Link </em>(NES, 1 player, 500 Wii Points): Everyone's favorite pointy-eared protagonist returns to Hyrule in the Virtual Console's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/01/zelda-ii-coming-to-virtual-console-monday/">100th release</a>. Aid Link in his battle against the forces of evil, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/zelda">Zelda</a>'s newfound narcoleptic tendencies and an endless wave of <em>best Zelda ever / worst Zelda ever</em> controversy.</li>

It's tough going to the party without a date. Earlier this week, Nintendo <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/21/nintendo-dates-metroid-prime-3-mario-strikers-charged-others/">laid out its release plans</a> up until September 2007, notably leaving a still dateless <em>Super Smash Bros. Brawl</em> out of the whole affair, forcing it to watch as <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/metroidprime3"><em>Metroid Prime 3</em></a> marched to the ball with an alluring 20th of August on its cannon arm. With no solid release window in sight, the Wii's frantic fighter must have considered going on a lonely drinking binge and slipping into a coma until 2008.<br /></div>
<br />That is, until Reggie Fils-Aime administered an unforgiving slap to the face and instilled hope once more. Speaking at the recent Nintendo Summit in Seattle, the Nintendo of America president confirmed that the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/22/smash-bros-site-now-up-music-detailed/">musically rich</a> <em>Super Smash Bros. Brawl</em> and <em>Super Mario Galaxy</em> would both be out before your Official Iwata Swimsuit 2007 calendar becomes worthless. <em>The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass</em> for DS was given similar assurances and will likely join the anticipated Wii duo in this holiday season's battle for shoppers. You'd best start stocking up on that financial ammunition.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/23/super-smash-bros-brawl-still-on-for-2007/">Super Smash Bros. Take a look at the Japanese box art for <em>The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass</em> (via <a href="http://www.dsfanboy.com/2007/05/22/phantom-hourglass-japanese-boxart-ftw/">DS Fanboy</a>). The art style and content is very reminiscent of <em>The Wind Waker</em>, which makes us curious: given the passage of time since the GameCube release and the fulfillment of a more "adult" Link with <em>Twilight Princess</em>, how you do you feel about the young Link look? Think about it, and check out the highlights for today:<br /><br /><strong>Joystiquery<br /></strong><a target="_blank" title="View Joystiq hands-on: PlayStation Home on Joystiq" href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/22/joystiq-hands-on-playstation-home/">Joystiq hands-on: PlayStation Home</a><br /><a target="_blank" title="View Joystiq interviews BioShock LE cover artist Adam Meyer on Joystiq" href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/22/joystiq-interviews-bioshock-le-cover-artist-adam-meyer/">Joystiq interviews BioShock LE cover artist Adam Meyer</a><br /><a target="_blank" title="View Readers pick best webcomic: Wii and my shadow on Joystiq" href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/22/readers-pick-best-webcomic-wii-and-my-shadow/">Readers pick best webcomic: Wii and my shadow</a><br /><a target="_blank" title="View Today's goal-reaching videos: Mario Strikers Charged on Joystiq" href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/22/todays-goal-reaching-videos-mario-strikers-charged/">Today's goal-reaching videos: Mario Strikers Charged</a><br /><br /><strong>News<br /></strong><a target="_blank" title="View Smash Bros. site now up, music detailed on Joystiq" href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/22/smash-bros-site-now-up-music-detailed/">Smash Bros. site now up, music detailed</a><br /><a target="_blank" title="View Skid Row, Poison, Extreme in 80s Guitar Hero on Joystiq" href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/22/skid-row-poison-extreme-in-80s-guitar-hero/">Skid Row, Poison, Extreme in 80s Guitar Hero</a><br /><a target="_blank" title="View New Metroid Prime 3 screenshots on Joystiq" href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/22/new-metroid-prime-3-screenshots/">New Metroid Prime 3 screenshots</a><br /><a target="_blank" title="View Step right up for Carnival Games: more minigames for the Wii on Joystiq" href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/22/step-right-up-for-carnival-games-more-minigames-for-the-wii/">Step right up for Carnival Games: more minigames for the Wii</a><br /><a target="_blank" title="View Riddick remake confirmed for PS3, Xbox 360 on Joystiq" href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/22/riddick-remake-confirmed-for-ps3-xbox-360/">Riddick remake confirmed for PS3, Xbox 360</a><br /><a target="_blank" title="View Sony's High Velocity Bowling started 'literally right before' Nintendo announced Wii Sports' Bowling on Joystiq" href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/22/sonys-high-velocity-bowling-started-literally-right-before-ni/">Sony's High Velocity Bowling started 'literally right before' Nintendo announced Wii Sports' Bowling</a><br /><a target="_blank" title="View No DirectX 10 update for Supreme Commander on Joystiq" href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/22/no-directx-10-update-for-supreme-commander/">No DirectX 10 update for Supreme Commander</a><br /><a target="_blank" title="View Konami expects Metal Gear Solid 4 by March '08 on Joystiq" href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/22/konami-expects-metal-gear-solid-4-by-march-08/">Konami expects Metal Gear Solid 4 by March '08</a><br /><a target="_blank" title="View Tom Clancy's EndWar to be fully voice-controlled on Joystiq" href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/22/tom-clancys-endwar-to-be-fully-voice-controlled/">Tom Clancy's EndWar to be fully voice-controlled</a><br /><a target="_blank" title="View Haze will have four-player co-op campaign on Joystiq" href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/22/haze-will-have-four-player-co-op-campaign/">Haze will have four-player co-op campaign</a><br /><a target="_blank" title="View Halo 3 beta adds Banshee on Valhalla on Joystiq" href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/22/halo-3-beta-adds-banshee-on-valhalla/">Halo 3 beta adds Banshee on Valhalla</a><br /><a target="_blank" title="View WoW patch 2.1 helps feed the habit on Joystiq" href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/22/wow-patch-2-1-helps-feed-the-habit/">WoW patch 2.1 helps feed the habit</a><br /><br /><strong>Rumors &amp; It's coming out on Saturday July 23rd, exactly 11 years after the Nintendo 64 hit the shelves. It's highly unusual for a game to come out on a Saturday in Japan, where Thursday is the traditional release day for new titles. It seems you're not just <em>Time Magazine</em>'s overall <a href="http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1569514,00.html">person of the year</a>, you're also the most influential. At least when it comes to <em>influencing</em> a poll on the <a href="http://www.time.com/time/specials/2007/time100walkup/article/0,28804,1611030_1612457,00.html">100 most influential people of the year</a>. After being <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/23/miyamoto-industry-snubbed-by-time-100/">nominated</a> for <em>Time'</em>s own top 100, it comes as little surprise to see Nintendo's legendary designer, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/03/16/who-needs-wii-play-dress-up-with-shigeru-miyamoto/">Shigeru Miyamoto</a>, place highly in the list constructed by internet users. With an average rating of 75 (out of 100) and 129,573 votes, the Mario maestro places 9th and effortlessly defeats the likes of Oprah Winfrey (43rd), George W. Bush (97th), George Clooney (26th) and <em>Nelson Mandela</em> (24th). Sure, the anti-apartheid, pro-democracy Nobel Peace prize winner wasn't involved in the creation of a new video game system this year, but we'd be remiss not to point out the amusing and somewhat bizarre priorities of voters.<br /><br />And what of the list above Miyamoto? There you'll find Kiefer Sutherland (8th), J.K. Rowling (6th), Dane Cook and, nestled snugly in first position, Rain (<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rain_%28singer%29">who?</a>). <em>Time Magazine</em>'s own list wisely does away with rankings and lumps the designer on <a href="http://www.time.com/time/specials/2007/time100/article/0,28804,1595326_1615737_1615521,00.html">page 92</a>, but not before suffering a critical lapse in sanity and asking Johnathan "<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fatal1ty">Fatal1ty</a>" Wendel to extend his fingers beyond the WASD keys. Noting that Miyamoto "opened the world" to a host of "people who never even wanted to visit it before" is about all Wendel's article can manage before losing the plot and discussing his 12 championship wins, ultra-performance PCs and how he'll spend the rest of his life "championing video gaming as an equal to pro football or basketball." <br /><br />Good thing he didn't write the Mandela bit, then.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/03/miyamoto-more-influential-than-nelson-mandela-confirmed/">Miyamoto more influential than Nelson Mandela: Confirmed</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 03 May 2007 22:34:00 EST. Being a generally mild mannered and lackadaisical bunch, we become worried when an impressive DS Lite mod <a href="http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&amp;item=130108922790">appears on eBay</a> and suddenly implants within us desires that are nothing short of sinister. Crafted by the same hands and mechanical forceps (probably) that produced an equally attractive <em>Legend of Zelda</em> <a href="http://www.nintendowiifanboy.com/2007/03/15/pretty-much-the-best-wii-case-mod-ever/">Wii makeover</a> just over a month ago, this particular variant of Nintendo's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/19/npd-march-belongs-to-ds-ps2/">portable powerhouse</a> demands a dramatic increase in our current rupee supply.<br /><br />We don't care how many blades of grass we have to mercilessly chop down or how many pots must be senselessly shattered to further our goal. This little device, with its customized charging stand and LED that is "calibrated to not be overbearing <strong>or</strong> too dim" must be ours. <br /><br />Or <em>yours</em>, if you outbid us. True, a portion of your money would go to Penny Arcade's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/childsplay">Child's Play</a> charity, but we'd <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/03/impossible-mission-to-stay-in-wii-shop-channel-forever/">forever</a> hold a grudge. The kind of grudge that will see <em>all your precious </em>(and amusingly buoyant) <em>pigs tossed into the nearest ocean.</em><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/ds-lite-zelda-mod/">DS Lite Zelda mod</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/ds-lite-zelda-mod/#231973"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/05/zelda_ds_mod_01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/ds-lite-zelda-mod/#231971"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/05/zelda_ds_mod_02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/ds-lite-zelda-mod/#231975"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/05/zelda_ds_mod_03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/ds-lite-zelda-mod/#231978"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/05/zelda_ds_mod_04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/ds-lite-zelda-mod/#231981"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/05/zelda_ds_mod_05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Via <a href="http://www.dsfanboy.com/2007/05/03/pretty-much-the-best-ds-lite-mod-ever/">DS Fanboy</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/03/zelda-ds-lite-mod-demands-slew-of-positive-adjectives/">Zelda DS Lite mod demands slew of positive adjectives</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 03 May 2007 15:44:00 EST. Those prayers, it seems, have been answered. For a mere $10, gamers will be able to relive -- and for some, experience for the first time -- one of the most acclaimed experiences in gaming history. <br /><br />We're counting down the seconds.<br /><br />[Thanks, vidGuy!]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/02/23/confirmed-ocarina-of-time-on-the-vc-this-monday/">Confirmed: Ocarina of Time on the VC this Monday</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 23 Feb 2007 16:27:00 EST. What a coup! It seems like things are really hot and cold for Europe when it comes to gaming. Usually, gamers have to pace around, waiting for games and systems that are months delayed, but when you guys get something early, it tends to be pretty awesome. <br /><br />So ... you downloading it today? <em>OoT</em> isn't cheap by VC standards, but is that much to pay for what many consider to be one of the best video games of all time?<br /><br />Today's releases:<br />

What is it about the <em>Zelda</em> franchise that keeps you enchanted? We'd also love to hear about your favorite <em>Zelda</em> memories. We recently re-played the original on the <a href="http://nintendowiifanboy.com/tag/virtualconsole">Virtual Console</a>, and rediscovering everything brought back our earliest memories of the series. It's made us half want to play through <em>all</em> of them again! Do you ever get that urge? <br /><br />And for those of you who (gasp!) aren't fans ... what is it about the adventures of Link that turns you off?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/02/22/ds-daily-on-zelda/">DS Daily: On Zelda</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 22 Feb 2007 09:00:00 EST. Zelda Dimension posted this picture of a painting found on a wall in <em>Zelda: Twilight Princess</em>, and it looks an <em>awful lot</em> like <a href="http://worldroots.com/brigitte/gifs/thomasjeff.jpg">Thomas Jefferson</a> ... or maybe <a href="http://artfiles.art.com/images/-/Gilbert-Stuart/George-Washington-Print-C10032257.jpeg">George Washington</a>? Or maybe dust? Apparently, one of the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Non-player_character">NPC</a>s is a student of American history. <br /><br />We love finding <a href="http://pressthebuttons.typepad.com/photos/uncategorized/secret.png">secrets</a> in <em>Zelda</em>, but we don't like being confronted with a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo_64">blurry</a> texture in a Wii game. Maybe the Zelda Dimension blogger was using composite cables, and that's why the picture is blurry? Yeah, that's the <a href="http://snltranscripts.jt.org/85/85bliar.phtml">ticket</a>!<br /><br />We look forward to seeing the <em>Zelda </em>timeline <a href="http://www.4colorrebellion.com/archives/2006/11/21/zelda-retrospective-part-6/">theorists</a> chew on <em>this one.</em><br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.digg.com/gaming_news/A_famous_cameo_appearing_in_Twilight_Princess_2">digg]</a><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/02/20/presidents-day-surprise-jefferson-in-twilight-princess/">President's Day surprise: Jefferson (?) in Twilight Princess</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 20 Feb 2007 18:15:00 EST. No examples are cited, but would he consider working with serious, mature themes such as heartache, loss, redemption, suffering, et cetera? Miyamoto, alluding to Nintendo's new mantra, also explained that his future projects will be simple enough for all ages to enjoy, which is something he has always seemed to be adept at, though our previously-mentioned themes will probably not feature into universally-appealing projects.<br /><br />The interview touched briefly on violence in video games, a theme Miyamoto does not wish to tackle. "Looking at the overall picture, it is important to understand and feel the pain that people might have ... we also have to take a careful approach, even in the circumstances when we are not portraying direct violence." Though the game legend might have aversion to violence, his words imply that there are cases when non-excessive presentation of aggression is understandable. Then again, if his goal is to appeal to people aged five to 95, then violence is probably something he's better off avoiding.<br /><br />The Talk Asia interview also serves as a primer for those interested in Miyamoto's background; much of the history discussion reads like a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shigeru_Miyamoto">Wikipedia</a> entry.<br /><br />[Pictured: Link <em>nonviolently</em> driving a sword into Ganon's head. Over at the <a href="http://www.dcemu.co.uk/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=49509">DCEmu</a> forums a user named Zion has created a teaser trailer for a homebrew Zelda game he's creating. Coupled with the second best-selling franchise <em>Pok&eacute;mon</em> (also a Nintendo property), the two series, which have sold a combined 348 million games worldwide, account for nearly 34% of the total sales of the top-twenty best-selling franchises; which include two additional Nintendo IPs ranked in the top ten, <span style="font-style: italic;">Donkey Kong</span> and <span style="font-style: italic;">Zelda</span>. So what's Nintendo's secret?<br /><br />Cross-culture appeal, spin-offs (e.g., racers, sports titles, puzzlers), brand saturation (e.g., apparel, card games, TV shows), and E-ratings all appear part of a profitable formula built for the long haul.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/10/nintendo-holds-key-to-franchise-longevity-profitability/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Nintendo holds key to franchise longevity, profitability</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/10/nintendo-holds-key-to-franchise-longevity-profitability/">Nintendo holds key to franchise longevity, profitability</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 10 Jan 2007 18:23:00 EST. Nintendo of Canada is having a contest between now and Jan. 31, the grand prize is a "limited edition life-size collectible statue of the character Link from the <em>Legend of Zelda</em>." Approx. value is $500 CDN ($425 USD). Three second prize winners get a Link "statuette." <br /><br />Here's a weak part for the grand winner: "Delivery charges are the sole responsibility of each winner." So, not only do you have to win Link, but you've got to ship his "life-size" self. No details on Link's height or weight. We wish there was a bigger photo to show, but that's all we've got. Beware the pointy ears though, you'll poke your eye out.<br /><br />[Thanks Cody]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/06/ohhhh-canada-you-could-win-a-giant-link/">Ohhhh Canada, you could win a giant Link</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 06 Jan 2007 12:25:00 EST. <p>The NES, billed as the savior of the video game industry after the 1980s crash, has a special place in the hearts of many long-time gamers. Now, an artist is offering up a piece of that with an NES. Not just any original NES, but one lovingly painted. Depicting <em>The Legend of Zelda</em>, one of the NES's landmark titles, the NES is not only a functioning piece of gaming history, but an incredibly well done piece of art. The NES looks like a screen shot were taped to the top of it and is protected by 3 or 4 layers of acrylic coating. The seller also has other custom painted systems featuring <em>Kid Icarus</em> and <em>Mega Man 2</em>. Worth taking a look at if you're under the mindset that games are art, as these systems are quite artistic.</p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/12/29/artistic-nes-up-for-sale/">Artistic NES up for sale</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 29 Dec 2006 16:15:00 EST. Admittedly, this rumor comes as little surprise, since consistent first-party support is crucial for Wii's success.<br /><br />We needn't remind you that <em>Twilight Princess</em> is a GameCube game with tacked on Wii functionality. While no doubt a key asset to the Wii launch, <em>Twilight Princess</em> is not a showcase for the new platform. Rest assured Nintendo has been working on 'that' particular <em>Zelda</em> entry since the moment the Wii concept was birthed. That's not to say we expect a true Wii <em>Zelda</em> before 2008. Remember, <em>Metroid </em>and <em>Mario</em> are holding it down in '07.<br /><br /><em>Game Informer</em> also reports that <em>Phantom Hourglass</em> for DS as been delayed until October 2007; a full year after the <em>Wind Waker</em> sequel was initially expected. Sound familiar?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/12/11/new-zelda-for-wii-deep-in-development-phantom-hourglass-delay/">New Zelda for Wii "deep in development," Phantom Hourglass delayed</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 11 Dec 2006 13:15:00 EST. Nintendo has reported they sold 600,000 units at launch and are on track to hit the full million goal in the US by the end of the year.</p>
<p>The Wii wasn't flying off the shelves alone. <em>Twilight Princess</em> accompanied 454,000 of them. That number is actually quite surprising given how large a franchise it is; we'd have expected every Wii to be paired up with its very own <em>Zelda</em> game, a 1:1 attach rate. In any case, <em>Twilight Princess</em> is looking to be the first million seller on the Wii if Nintendo can (presumably) reach those 2 million in the US by the end of January.</p>
<p>Nintendo's positive news is nice for those who still want a Wii but can't yet find it; you may have a relatively easy time finding one before the next big holiday hits. This is, of course, a far cry better than <a href="http://wwww.joystiq.com/2006/11/21/ps3-may-miss-production-goals-again/">the other guy</a>. Can Nintendo capitalize on their production capabilities and storm the market?</p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/11/27/wii-off-to-a-good-start/">Nintendo sells 600K Wiis at launch, 454K Zeldas</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 27 Nov 2006 20:30:00 EST. <p>Some people truly enjoy their franchises; Paul Hantschel is one of those people. It would seem Paul wasn't satisfied with cheap plastic knock-off replicas of the Master Sword and decided he would want to own the real deal. Just don't stick it to your Wiimote and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/11/20/flying-wiimote-busts-60-tv/">lose control</a>. With &pound;1,800 in hand -- or a whopping $3,300 -- he asked a blacksmith by the name of Rob Miller in Scotland to build it. 10 months later, Paul is battling Dodongos with his trusty sword.</p>
<p>The $3,300 is certainly a hefty price but, given the details seen in the sword, well worth it. We're wondering what kind of metal the smith used ... most likely SCA-approved iron. While we're sure Paul already knows this, he should keep the thing oiled to keep it from rusting. In any case, this method of obtaining the Master Sword is much better than fighting your way through a forest or getting thrown into the future.</p>
<p>[Thanks, Justin H.]</p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/11/27/the-master-sword-has-been-found/">The Master Sword has been found!</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 27 Nov 2006 12:45:00 EST.
