Games Convention Online, the anemic competition to the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/23/gamescom-2010-grew-to-254-000-attendees/">behemoth</a> that is <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/gamescom-2010/">Gamescom</a>, will not occur this year -- or, likely, ever again. The organizers of the <a href="http://www.gamesconvention.com/">Leipziger Messe</a> said that despite support the past two years, the show was unable to find a "firm financial footing."<br />
<br />
The <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/games-convention-online">GCO</a> was a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/29/leipzig-games-convention-dead-long-live-games-convention-onl/">reactionary</a> show created to fill the void left in Leipzig when the industry made Cologne its new home for an annual European mega-show. In its first year, GCO attracted <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/04/games-convention-online-brings-in-43-000-offline-visitors/">43,000 attendees</a>, but the following year it went <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/06/03/games-convention-online-decides-to-go-trade-only/">trade only</a> and no figures were announced. Gamescom 2011 is ready to rock Cologne again from August 17 - 21.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/16/games-convention-online-2011-offline-isnt-happening/">Games Convention Online 2011 taken offline</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 16 Apr 2011 02:15:00 EST. Games Convention Online in Leipzig, Germany will not be open to the public this year, as event organizers decided this week to make it a business forum. A Leipziger Messe spokesperson stated that the "number of registered public exhibitors was insufficient" to satisfy the interest of visitors "whose past experiences bring them with high expectations to Leipzig." Overall, the convention is allegedly "bigger" this year, with 30 companies planning to attend -- three more than last year.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/games-convention-online">Games Convention Online</a>, which had <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/04/games-convention-online-brings-in-43-000-offline-visitors/">43,000 attendees</a> in 2009 during its inaugural year, was Leipzig's way of staying on the gaming map after Europe's &uuml;ber convention moved to Cologne, Germany and became the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/24/gamescom-2009-attendance-at-245-000/">wildly successful GamesCom</a>. This year's business-only Game Convention Online will be <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/24/next-games-convention-online-set-for-july-8-11-in-leipzig/">held in July</a>. It appears that <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/games-convention-online">Games Convention Online</a> has justified its existence for a second year, as the show will take place July 8-11, 2010, at the Leipziger Messe in Germany. The inaugural show last year drew in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/04/games-convention-online-brings-in-43-000-offline-visitors/">43,000 attendees</a> and organizers have added an extra day for more breathing room in the schedule to accommodate "business talks."<br />
<br />
Games Convention Online was Leipzig's way of staying on the map after it lost the mega European games convention, which became <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/gamescom-2009/">GamesCom</a> in Cologne. That show brought in an astounding <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/24/gamescom-2009-attendance-at-245-000/">245,000 attendees</a> its first year.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/24/next-games-convention-online-set-for-july-8-11-in-leipzig/">Next 'Games Convention Online' set for July 8-11 in Leipzig</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 24 Nov 2009 23:59:00 EST. But, it seems they missed the memo about where this year's show is located (Cologne, duh) and instead made the trip to Leipzig. Hey, what do you expect from a species that thinks it belongs on the moon?<br /><br />Additionally, Ubisoft has released <em>actual</em> gameplay footage from <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/rabbids-go-home"><em>Rabbids Go Home</em></a> (available past the break). The gameplay looks just as fun as what <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/07/hands-on-rabbids-go-home/">we've already experienced</a> and highlights include a stolen jet engine and a pack of crazed chihuahuas. The revamped Leipzig games convention, now <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/31/games-convention-online-logs-into-existence-today-in-leipzig/">Games Convention Online</a>, welcomed <a href="http://www.leipziger-messe.de/LeMMon/PRESSE.NSF/html_newstickerger/36C585E02AB4A685C12576060058356B?OpenDocument">43,000 attendees</a> in its inaugural year. That's not a bad turnout for a show entirely devoted to online, browser and mobile games. For the sake of comparison, the attendance was still higher than this year's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/04/e3-2010-scheduled-for-june-15-17-2009-had-41-000-attendees/">41,000 at E3 '09</a> (which, to be fair, is not open to the public).<br /><br />Games Convention Online plans to return next year and, according to a survey taken during the show, a little under 90 percent of exhibitors plan to return. Perhaps by next year the show will hit its projected target of 50,000 attendees. Now, all eyes turn to Cologne, Germany, where <a href="http://www.gamescom-cologne.com/">Gamescom</a> kicks off in a couple weeks.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://news.bigdownload.com/2009/08/03/first-games-convention-online-in-leipzig-brings-in-43-000-attend/">Big Download</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/04/games-convention-online-brings-in-43-000-offline-visitors/">Games Convention Online brings in 43,000 offline visitors</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 04 Aug 2009 02:00:00 EST. The Games Convention Online kicks off today in Leipzig, a mere shell of the once mighty Leipzig Games Convention that was previously held in the location. The new show is designed for online games, featuring browser, mobile and MMO games. The event expects ... 50,000 attendees?! Wow, that's more than the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/04/e3-2010-scheduled-for-june-15-17-2009-had-41-000-attendees/">41,000 at this year's E3</a>. It may be a reduction of its former self, but that's still a big number. Games Convention Online runs through Aug 2.<br /><br />The big boys of video game publishing have thrown their Euros behind Cologne's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/gamescom">Gamescom</a>, which kicks off next month -- only at that time will we find out if it'll take Leipzig Games Convention's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/25/leipzig-expects-200k-people-at-games-convention/">200,000 attendees</a> with it.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/31/games-convention-online-logs-into-existence-today-in-leipzig/">Games Convention Online logs into existence today in Leipzig</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 31 Jul 2009 19:45:00 EST. The Leipzig Games Convention, Europe's premier video games showcase, will be closing its doors in 2009 thanks to competition from <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/25/leipzigs-games-convention-challenged-by-colognes-gamescom/">Cologne's Gamescom</a>, a new event which premieres this Summer. Gamescom boasts the full support of the industry, which it has snatched from Leipzig's grasp. This includes acting as host for GDC Europe, which had previously been hosted at Leipzig alongside the Games Convention.<br /></div>
<br />The Leipzigger Messe isn't done with games, though, as it will play host to a new event this year. Games Convention Online will take part in Leipzig between July 31 and August 2, and will focus on "the most dynamic market in the gaming industry: browser, client and mobile games." An exciting prospect, by all accounts, but we suspect it may not see as great a turnout as Gamescom might. <br /><br />As if the news couldn't get any sadder, Leipzig's CEO Wolfgang Marzin says the industry can come back any time (please!). "If the industry is again in search of a platform for console and PC games and hardware with the know-how of the GC - Games Convention, we will immediately be available."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/29/leipzig-games-convention-dead-long-live-games-convention-onl/">Leipzig Games Convention dead, long live Games Convention Online</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 29 Jan 2009 08:30:00 EST. Or, given that it's Germany we're talking about, it's the fancy bullet train we'll be turning around. Regardless, we've had it with our rowdy passengers, Cologne and Leipzig. Jostling for the title of premier European games convention in 2009, Cologne's Gamescom organizers have been quick to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/26/leipzig-convention-without-industry-support-gloats-gamescom/">proclaim victory</a> over the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/leipzig-08">Leipzig Games Convention</a>, citing better (nay, <em>existing</em>) trade support and location. <br /><br />Speaking to <a href="http://www.mcvuk.com/news/31639/Trade-backs-Cologne-as-key-Euro-show-for-09">MCV</a>, Koch Media managing director Klemens Kundratitz declared that there "will not be another show of any relevance in Germany." He added, "[Leipzig] might try something, but the top 12 publishers are in the BIU and we are committed to take the show to the next level in Cologne." Even SCEE president David Reeves joined in, telling MCV, "Leipzig Games Convention has its limitations logistically in terms of getting there and the number of hotels available for visitors." Reeves also predicted that 400,000 attendees -- compared to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/25/auf-wiedersehen-kommen-sie-bitte-until-next-year-leipzig-2009-set-for-a/">Leipzig's 200,000</a> -- will stink up Cologne in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/25/leipzigs-games-convention-challenged-by-colognes-gamescom/">September 2009</a>.<br /><br />Leipzig isn't going down without a fuss, however, with Leipziger Messe CEO Wolfgang Marzin rubbishing reports of weak trade support. "We've already proved that GC works, and we have trade backing - nobody wants a show in September. Another copy of GC in Germany is ridiculous; what is the benefit of holding another show? I am confident that the big show will be GC next year." Big? Or biggest?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/02/cologne-and-leipzig-dont-make-us-turn-this-car-around/">Cologne and Leipzig, don't make us turn this car around</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 02 Sep 2008 01:30:00 EST. Taking place from September 9th to September 13th, 2009, Gamescom has thrown down the gauntlet and cast a demeaning glare towards the recently concluded (and returning) <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/leipzig-08">Leipzig Games Convention</a>. <br /><br />"It was to be expected that the Leipzig trade fair would try to keep the topic in its 2009 programme as well by announcing its date," said Oliver P. Kuhrt, managing director of Gamescom organiser Koelnmesse. "But they will have to do it without the industry for the most part. The lead trade fair will take place in Cologne in 2009 and beyond." Despite posting <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/25/auf-wiedersehen-kommen-sie-bitte-until-next-year-leipzig-2009-set-for-a/">improved attendance numbers</a> this year, Kuhrt is adamant that it's time to <em>move 'zig</em> down from its biggest-show-in-town status. "Whatever happens in Germany in 2009 outside of Cologne cannot claim to represent this sector." <br /><br />It figures that the organizers of a trade show would <em>exhibit</em> such a fine "Oh snap," but we think it best to wait and see if the Cologne show offers up something to sniff at.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/26/leipzig-convention-without-industry-support-gloats-gamescom/">Leipzig Convention without industry support, gloats Gamescom</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 26 Aug 2008 19:30:00 EST. The <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/leipzig-08">Leipzig Games Convention</a> was apparently a success and is already scheduled to return next year from August 19 to 23. The "<a href="http://www.leipziger-messe.de/LeMMon/PRESSE.NSF/html_newstickerger/7F6FA2F422CC0681C12574AF003B3204?OpenDocument">final report</a>" by the Leipziger-Messe states that 82.1% of attendees asked for the show to stay in its current location, with more than a third of attendees traveling over 300 kilometers (186 miles) to attend.<br /><br />The show had 203,000 attendees, with 547 companies exhibiting their wares. Showing that Leipzig is actually becoming of interest to the media as well: 3,800 journalists attended, up from 3,395 in 2007. It'll be interesting to see how Leipzig does next year when it will reportedly have some competition from <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/25/leipzigs-games-convention-challenged-by-colognes-gamescom/">GamesCOM in Cologne</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/25/auf-wiedersehen-kommen-sie-bitte-until-next-year-leipzig-2009-set-for-a/">Auf Wiedersehen, until next year: Leipzig 2009 set for Aug. 19-23</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 25 Aug 2008 16:10:00 EST. As you probably noticed (from the <em>title</em>), there's good news and bad news concerning the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/20/gc-2008-konami-rolls-kororinpa-2-our-way/">sequel</a> to the early Wii title <em>Kororinpa</em>. Luckily, the good outweighs the bad. The good, in fact, is great: <em>Kororinpa 2</em> will feature ten stages that utilize the balance board. While it's not <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/14/wiimotionplus-puts-better-control-in-your-motion-control/">Wii MotionPlus</a>, that'll still add a neat (and challenging, if <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/wii-fit"><em>Wii Fit's</em></a> marble mini-game is any indication) element to the sequel. The bad? According to <a href="http://wii.ign.com/articles/901/901208p1.html?RSSwhen2008-08-20_161400&amp;RSSid=901208">the folks at IGN</a>, the game looks <em>terrible</em> on the floor in Leipzig. Don't start huffing and stamping your feet over quality control just yet, though; <em>Kororinpa 2</em> isn't due until next year. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/american-mcgee">American McGee</a> would be so proud. Konami has announced a new upcoming third-person action title called <em>Lords of Shadow</em>, which the company's European arm describes as "a dark fairy tale" in development for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. First announced during <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/leipzig-08">Leipzig's Games Convention</a>, the game will be set in Europe during the Middle Ages, and promises to tell the story of "one man's journey to discover the true meaning of sacrifice amidst murder and betrayal." Honestly, this sounds more like fodder for daytime soap to us.<br /><br />Being handled by <em>Jericho </em>developer Mercury Steam, the project is likely the result of a partnership between the two companies <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/07/konami-jericho-devs-working-on-something-for-ps3-xbox-360/">announced last March</a>, at which time Konami called the game "a major part" of its release schedule for 2009-10. Konami has now narrowed that window a bit, confirming plans to have <em>Lords of Shadow</em> on retail shelves sometime in 2010.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/20/gc-2008-konami-spinning-twisted-tales-in-lords-of-shadow/">GC 2008: Konami spinning twisted tales in Lords of Shadow</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 20 Aug 2008 15:30:00 EST. The 160GB model announced at Leipzig today will also be coming to America in a new bundle featuring last year's blockbuster PS3 exclusive, <em>Uncharted</em>. For $499, the 160GB system will include the new 160GB system, a DUALSHOCK 3 controller, a voucher for <em>PAIN</em> and a copy of <em>Uncharted</em>. It will be available in November.<br /><br />"As PLAYSTATION Network continues to evolve with our recently launched video delivery service and more exclusive games, PS3 owners are demanding more storage capacity," said Jack Tretton, president and CEO, SCEA. "Consumers also are utilizing PS3 as an entertainment hub for their digital media, placing content such as their entire music collection on the hard drive. The 160GB PS3 system addresses this growing consumer demand in a compelling bundle that delivers significant value."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/20/160gb-model-also-announced-for-america-499-november-release/">160GB model also announced for America: $499, November release</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 20 Aug 2008 12:22:00 EST. It doesn't look like everyone should be jumping for joy about a revised Xbox 360 d-pad, yet. According to Microsoft the rumored directional pad revision is currently only slated as "a limited edition promotional item that is only available in Europe, Asia and Latin America while supplies last." Set for release on October 24, <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=218894">Eurogamer</a> confirmed the "optimized" d-pad will be released in a bundle with <em>Pro Evolution Soccer 2009</em>. Also, the controller will be sickly green, as seen in the image above. While plans could change the bundle seems to be the only option for now. No word on a North American bundle, so for now sports fans should hope Pro Evo 09 is region-free.<br /> <br /> [via <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/20/gc-2008-revised-360-controller-is-limited-edition-promotional/">Joystiq</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/20/curses-d-pad-revision-is-limited-edition-promotional-item/">Curses! <p> At the end of the new <em>Heavy Rain</em> trailer, a vague (but nonetheless reassuring) release date was mentioned: 2009. Slowly, but surely, Sony's 2009 killer apps are being revealed. With <em>MAG</em>, <em>Killzone 2</em>, <em>inFAMOUS</em> and now <em>Heavy Rain</em>, gamers will have a lot to look forward to in 2009.<br /><br /><em>Heavy Rain</em> is a "dark, immersive and emotionally-engaging experience" expanding upon the ideas of Quantic Dream's previous adventure game, <em>Fahrenheit</em> (<em>Indigo Prophecy</em>). Once again, the promise is that "every action has a consequence" with a constantly evolving story based on the way you interact with others and the choices you make. SCEE is promising it will talk about topics unheard of in gaming, "making it a genuinely mature game for a new world of adult gamers."<br /><br /></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/20/heavy-rain-confirmed-for-2009/">Heavy Rain confirmed for late 2009</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 20 Aug 2008 11:45:00 EST. <p> Europe is getting a wicked cool service to use early next year. Entitled VidZones, this new service, available in 23 European countries, including Australia and New Zealand, will allow PS3 fans to access an unlimited amount of streaming music videos on their PS3 for the incredible price of: free. You'll be able to create custom playlists and yes, you'll be able to stream it on your PSP via Remote Play. This will operate separately from the current PS3 Video Store.<br /><br />In addition, users of VidZones will be able to download music videos and ringtones directly to their cell phones ... all for a nominal charge, of course. With this and PlayTV, the multimedia features of the European PS3 is far outclassing those of their (now jealous) neighbors.</p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/20/vidzones-brings-unlimited-streaming-music-videos-for-free/">VidZones brings unlimited streaming music videos ... for free</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 20 Aug 2008 11:35:00 EST. A new peripheral for the PS3 has just been announced at Leipzig. A wireless keypad is similar to Xbox 360's current chatpad, but it will connect to the controller through the top USB port. The chatpad will also enable "touchpad mode for mouse input." Sony just announced at their Leipzig press conference the PSP-3000 series. It will look exactly the same as the current PSP-2000 (Slim &amp; Light) model, but will add a built-in microphone and enhanced screen. Apparently, the screen will work better outdoors, being able to resist glare. The built-in microphone will be a huge plus for regular Skype users, and those that take their PSP online via Infrastructure.<br /><br />Video-Out has also been enhanced, with the system now able to interlace for televisions that don't support a progressive output (that means non-HDTVs).<br /><br />The PSP-3000 series will be available on October 15th in Europe and will retail for &euro;199. There will be 8 bundles, each adding one game to the package.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/20/psp-3000-features-enhanced-screen-and-built-in-microphone/">PSP-3000 features enhanced screen &amp; built-in microphone</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 20 Aug 2008 11:15:00 EST. For those of you who're fans of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/tennis">tennis</a>, rejoice. EA is poised to present their own tennis title. And, as if that wasn't enough, it will take advantage of Nintendo's new <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/14/wiimotionplus-puts-better-control-in-your-motion-control/">MotionPlus</a> peripheral, joining Ubisoft in proclaiming <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/18/ubisoft-totally-hearts-motionplus/"><em>it's totally awesome</em></a>. EA also mentions that this will be the first tennis game to include the All England Lawn Tennis Club, which is where Wimbledon is played.<br /><br />So, how many of you are looking forward to seeing this one? A tennis game that takes advantage of MotionPlus? We're excited!<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/20/ea-to-serve-up-new-wii-tennis-franchise/">Joystiq</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/20/ea-looking-to-start-up-tennis-franchise-on-wii/">GC 2008: EA looking to start up tennis franchise on Wii</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 20 Aug 2008 09:57:00 EST. Blizzard <a href="http://www.worldofwar.net/n/416462/breaking-news-lich-king-cinematic-to-be-shown-at-leipzig">announced</a> today that <em>World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King</em>'s opening cinematic will premiere at the Leipzig Games Convention. The clip will be shown this Thursday, August 21, at 1PM German standard time (7AM Joystiq time).<br /><br />We'd speculate about what Blizzard has in store for a big reveal at <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/blizzcon-2008">Blizzcon</a>, but with <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/diablo-3">Diablo 3</a></em>, <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/starcraft-2">Starcraft 2</a></em> and <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/world-or-warcraft">WoW</a></em> in play, who knows what the company could announce. Leipzig Games Convention starts this week, and we're proud to say that Jem will be covering all the Sony goodness from the show floor. We'll be getting some intimate time with <em>Killzone 2</em>, <em>LittleBigPlanet</em> and <em>Heavy Rain</em> -- and who knows what other surprises are in store? Get ready for the excitement by checking out <a href="http://www.gamekyo.com/news28606_games-convention-2008-premieres-photos-des-stands.html">Gamekyo</a>'s pictures of the show floor being set up. There are a lot of familiar E3-esque booths in the works. Leipzig Games Convention is only a few days away now, and Sony is making sure that their PS3 headliner, <em>LittleBigPlanet</em>, is the talk of the town. In fact, they've plastered a nearby building in the German town with the adorable characters of this PS3 exclusive. This massive display would be an eyesore if it were anything else -- but it's unlikely anyone with a heart would be able to resist the charm of the rainbow assortment of Sackboy and his pals.<br /><br />[Thanks, Gambit07!]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/14/littlebigplanet-plastered-over-leipzig-building/">LittleBigPlanet plastered over Leipzig building</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 14 Aug 2008 21:00:00 EST. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/sega">Sega</a> might have spent the last few years dragging our beloved memories of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/07/even-sega-thinks-sonic-needs-saving/"><em>Sonic</em></a> through the dirt, but like an abused, battered spouse, we always return to the company's embrace. They'll change <em>this time</em>, we tell ourselves before each new Sega title is revealed. Sometimes, the gamble <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/15/wii-fanboy-eyes-on-madworld/">pays off</a>. Other times ... <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/19/rumors-new-sonic-game-and-dead-rising-for-us/">not so much</a>.<br /><br />At first glance, the company's Wii line-up for Leipzig (listed past the break) consists of titles we've all seen before, but Sega is also planning a "world premiere" for a hitherto unannounced game, one that will be announced in time for the start of the trade fair on August 20th. This being Sega, our imaginations have instantly fired up. Given the recent <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/31/sega-tags-uspto-with-jet-set-radio-trademark/">trademarking shenanigans</a> and Sega's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/17/get-video-of-sega-bass-fishing/">current</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/13/help-more-house-of-the-dead-2-and-3-return-screens-are-still-insi/">fondness</a> for reviving Dreamcast titles, our money is on a <em>Jet Set Radio</em> game of some description. You never know, however -- it <em>could</em> just be another <em>Sonic </em>game noone really cares about. We'd <em>never</em> rule that option out.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/14/sega-has-a-surprise-for-leipzig/#comments">Activate idle speculation</a>!<br /><br /><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/14/sega-has-a-surprise-for-leipzig/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Sega has a surprise for Leipzig</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/14/sega-has-a-surprise-for-leipzig/">Sega has a surprise for Leipzig</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 14 Aug 2008 16:30:00 EST. Discovered on the USK (the German equivalent of America's ESRB) is a brand new PS3 title coming from Sony Computer Entertainment: <em>Savage Moon</em>. Not much is known about this title except we can expect it to be a military strategy game. Considering it's published by SCE, expect it to be exclusively on PS3. The Leipzig Games Convention is just around the corner -- wouldn't that be a dandy place to make a few surprise announcements? Stay tuned.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=331199">NeoGAF</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/13/savage-moon-military-strategy-game-discovered-on-usk/">Savage Moon: military strategy game discovered on USK</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 13 Aug 2008 17:18:00 EST. So, to us, it's pretty easy math. No press conference + no hype = no huge Leipzig Xbox 360 announcements. Not unlike the unfortunate victims and eventual accomplices in a zombie apocalypse, Valve's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/left-4-dead"><em>Left 4 Dead</em></a> will soon be spreading across the world, exposing itself to clamoring crowds of pale-skinned, physically sluggish moaners. The cooperative shooter will be hosted in playable form at several upcoming gaming events, giving folks like you the chance to experience what we've <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/16/joystiq-e3-hands-on-left-4-dead/">been raving about</a>. Here's where you can give the game a good go:<br />
<ul>
    <li><a href="http://www.gc-germany.com/index.php">Leipzig Games Convention</a> (Germany, 20-24 August)</li>
    <li><a href="http://www.pennyarcadeexpo.com/">Penny Arcade Expo</a> (Seattle, USA, August 29-31) -- Xbox 360 version debut<br /> </li>

    <li><a href="http://www.computerandvideogames.com/sites/pcgamer/showdown/">PC Gamer Showdown</a> (UK, 27-28 September)</li>
</ul>
As if mowing down hordes of zombies on your way to the <em>Left 4 Dead</em> booth wasn't incentive enough to go play, Valve has promised that its people will be nearby to dispense information and game "memorabilia." Very nice! All we got at E3 were some mints.<br /><br />[Via press release]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/13/left-4-dead-going-on-world-tour/">Left 4 Dead going on world tour</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 13 Aug 2008 01:00:00 EST. Sony's E3 press conference, whilst exciting for PSP owners, was lacking anything particularly tasty for PS3 owners. Barring <em>MAG, </em>there wasn't anything there were weren't already expecting. Speaking to MCV, Sony Europe boss David Reeves <a href="http://www.mcvuk.com/news/31348/Sony-promises-Leipzig-blockbuster">has stated</a> that this was a strategic decision. "We cannot tailor all our announcements to July," he says, adding that utilizing E3, the Leipzig Games Convention and the Tokyo Game Show allows them to spread their big announcements out, building hype as they go.<br /><br />With that said, Reeves promises that the Leipzig Games Convention next month will include some "blockbuster stuff." These announcements won't just be Euro-centric, but will also have a global impact. We already know that <em>Heavy Rain </em>is due to be shown off at the event, but the promise or more announcements has us intrigued. We look forward to finding out more next month.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/25/david-reeves-promises-an-announcement-filled-leipzig/">David Reeves promises an announcement filled Leipzig</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 25 Jul 2008 14:00:00 EST. <br />The Leipzig Game Convention? Nintendo is <em>so over</em> it. In an announcement to the press earlier today, the company ruled itself out of the forthcoming event, stating that it will be focusing instead on "smaller, local events and national promotional tours" -- a bit like <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/17/nintendo-takes-wii-fit-out-for-a-run-in-the-uk/">this one</a>, we suppose.<br /><br />Ninty was keen to emphasize that this was nothing to do with the event itself (the kind of "it's not you, it's <em>me</em>" excuse we've heard a thousand times before!), but we're still surprised; didn't Leipzig have 185,000 visitors last year? Our guess is that Nintendo is trying to reach out to its new audience, which we understand consists primarily of people who don't attend game conventions.<br /><br />[Thanks, Andreas!]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/23/nintendo-drops-out-of-leipzig-gc/">Nintendo drops out of Leipzig GC</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 23 May 2008 17:00:00 EST. Nintendo has decided to opt out of the 2008 Games Convention in Leipzig, Germany; a show which attracts over 150,000 attendees. Website <a href="http://nintendo-revolution.blogspot.com/2008/05/nintendo-not-present-at-games.html">Nintendo Revolution</a> translated the German press release which states the big N will instead focus on local events and a national promotional tour during the second half of 2008. Nintendo made sure to note the decision in not attending is not a criticism of the convention.<br /><br />Nintendo has not made any comment on whether it will attend the 2009 Games Convention when it moves to Cologne, Germany, and turns into <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/25/leipzigs-games-convention-challenged-by-colognes-gamescom/">GAMESCom</a>. We'll have to see if Nintendo's withdrawal will affect attendance numbers when the Games Convention is held for the last time in Leipzig this August.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/23/nintendo-not-attending-leipzig-may-return-for-cologne-09/">Nintendo not attending Leipzig, may return for Cologne '09</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 23 May 2008 16:30:00 EST. European Nintendo fans eager to attend the biggest gaming show in all of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/europe">Europe</a>, take note. Nintendo has decided not to attend this year's show. Considering they had <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/08/25/lgc-wrap-up-how-did-the-ds-do/">a great show</a> last year, we honestly can't understand why Nintendo would back out. Their new focus will be to participate in "smaller, local events and national promotional tours."<br /><br />Any of our European readers saddened by this news? Were you planning on attending the show in Germany this year?<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://nintendo-revolution.blogspot.com/2008/05/nintendo-not-present-at-games.html">Nintendo Revolution</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/23/nintendo-pulls-out-of-leipzig/">Nintendo pulls out of Leipzig</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 23 May 2008 15:00:00 EST. That reputation might not lat long, though, as GamesIndustry.biz <a href="http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=33469">reports</a> that a major German trade group is leaving Leipzig behind for a new show, Cologne's GamesCOM, in September 2009.<br /><br />While the move has been <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/03/games-convention-cant-leave-leipzig-until-2009-and-probably-won/">rumored</a> for a while, German industry association Bundesverband Interaktive Unterhaltungssoftware announced only this morning that the new show would effectively replace the Leipzig event. Games Convention owner Messe Leipzig, for their part, released a <a href="http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=33482">statement</a> expressing regret and saying that it would be a "harsh blow" for the region. No word yet on whether Games Convention would still try to put on a competing show, but consensus seems to be that effort would be difficult without BIU support.<br /><br /><br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/25/leipzigs-games-convention-challenged-by-colognes-gamescom/">Leipzig's Games Convention challenged by Cologne's GamesCOM</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 25 Feb 2008 13:45:00 EST. According to GI.biz, it couldn't even leave until 2009 anyway and would require the permission of the event's organizers -- the Leipziger Messe. The brand is owned by Leipziger Messe, so a change in location or design would require the permission of the organization.<br /><br />According to a <a href="http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=28280">representative</a> from Leipziger Messe, the rumor actually got started because their contract for the convention center expires in '08. They say that contracts are negotiated in terms of years, so they just have to renegotiate their contract for the grounds past '08. Unless there's something that the Leipziger Messe is hiding, it looks like they plan to stay in Leipzig with the Games Convention for years to come -- not like it hasn't been <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/22/leipzig-benefits-for-e3-death-gets-40-larger/">successful</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/03/games-convention-cant-leave-leipzig-until-2009-and-probably-won/">Games Convention can't leave Leipzig until 2009 and probably won't</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 03 Sep 2007 10:30:00 EST. <p>Europe's exclusive PVR service, called <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/22/playtv-brings-hd-dvr-features-to-european-ps3-systems/">PlayTV</a>, looks to be a winner. So much so that Americans (like a majority of the PS3 Fanboy team) are jealous of their friends across the Atlantic. If the features and services provided by PlayTV weren't incredible enough, it utilizes a genuinely sexy interface that (dare we say?) looks better than Sony's XMB. Watch this "leaked" footage from Leipzig to see for yourself.</p>

Fansite NightsIntoDreams.com is reporting that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/nights"><em>NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams</em></a> has been delayed until the first quarter of next year. Apparently the news came from a Sega PR representative this morning, but just because <em>someone says</em> that <em>someone said it</em>, doesn't make something true. In fact, that's pretty much the textbook definition of a rumor.<br /><br />However, given that this fansite apparently has someone at Leipzig who's been capturing teensy, blurry cellphone videos of the game in action (watch the one above at your own risk), we're inclined to believe their news. We'd be pleased to let <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Sega/">Sega</a> take some extra time with the game, and possibly sell it at a less content-heavy time of the year. Maybe in early 2008 it'll be able to get the attention of the <em>horrible people</em> who would ignore <em>NiGHTS</em> for <em>Mario</em> in November.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=184828">NeoGAF</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/28/rumor-more-days-before-nights/">Rumor: More days before NiGHTS?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 28 Aug 2007 15:40:00 EST. For those of us who weren't able to get ourselves out to Germany and be a part of the Leipzig show, it's nice to get a tour of Nintendo's booth at the show through pictures. And, given what <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/03/nintendo-to-keep-it-intimate-at-leipzig/">Nintendo said</a> before entering the show, we wonder if their approach worked out for them. Either way, those hammocks look comfy, so we're sure a few tired souls ended up hanging about.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/27/check-out-nintendos-booth-at-leipzig/">Check out Nintendo's booth at Leipzig</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 27 Aug 2007 18:00:00 EST. It's no surprise that the new <em>Mario </em>game took "Best Wii Game" at the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/leipzig">Leipzig Game Convention</a>. No, the <em>other</em> one. That's right, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/23/mario-and-sonic-in-the-unexceptional-screenshots/"><em>Mario &amp; Sonic at the Olympics</em></a> beat <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/22/cookie-factory-galaxy-video-is-a-delicious-treat/"><em>Super Mario Galaxy</em></a> in the eyes of the jury. According to the statement released with the list of awards, "Mario and Sonic manage to translate Olympic disciplines into easily mastered, entertaining games fun." Not having played either, we suppose we should trust their judgment. But, on the other hand, <em>what?</em><br /><br />In somewhat less mind-boggling news, the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/13/e307-joystiq-goes-toe-to-toe-with-wiifit/">Wii Balance Board</a> was named the "Best Hardware Accessory." The jury said "Having already converted the remote control into a controller, the manufacturer now turns scales into a games accessory."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/27/leipzig-is-crazy-for-mario-and-sonic-at-the-olympics/">Leipzig is crazy for Mario &amp; Sonic at the Olympics</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 27 Aug 2007 15:00:00 EST. <p>Straight from Leipzig, the developers at Guerrilla demonstrated some of the gameplay features of the highly anticipated PS3 first person shooter, <em>Killzone 2</em>. While the game is mostly known for its graphics technology, gamers should be most curious about the way the game plays. Certainly, is the gameplay as advanced as the way it looks? All signs point to good, with heavy realism in the surgery department, and the same sort of ass-kickery we've come to expect from surgery games. Thank you, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/09/12/ds-gets-some-love-from-bafta/"><em>Trauma Center</em></a>. At least in <em>LifeSigns</em>, players don't have to choose their own tools -- it's done automatically -- so that's one less step for us to screw up while we're sweating over someone's heart operation.<br /><br />The most recent word is that the game is for-really-real scheduled for October ... but since we've seen dates both in June and this very week slip past, we're not holding our breath. We just <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/27/lifesigns-producer-dissects-the-game/">hope it comes out</a> <em>eventually</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/24/lifesigns-resurfaces-at-gc/">LifeSigns resurfaces at GC</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 24 Aug 2007 14:00:00 EST.
