EA Games president Frank Gibeau has told <a href="http://www.develop-online.net/news/36476/EA-boss-Movie-game-business-falling-apart">Develop</a> that the licensing deals involved in the development of movie-based games are going the "wrong way" for publishers. He described the movie-game business as "falling apart," with returns on investment often failing to justify the costs involved in securing popular properties for a video game.<br />
<br />
According to Gibeau, EA considers itself better off working on its own IP like <em>Dead Space, </em>rather than spending it on something with the creative limitations like the James Bond series (a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/05/04/bond-takes-order-from-activision-eas-out/">license now held by rival Activision</a>). "The days of licensed-based, 75-rated games copies are dead like the dinosaur," the executive said. <br />
<br />
Well, that's something we can agree on -- the days of <a href="http://www.metacritic.com/game/xbox-360/harry-potter-and-the-deathly-hallows-part-1"><em>37-</em>rated</a> movie-based games has dawned, as evidenced recently by EA Bright Light's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/11/16/harry-potter-and-the-deathly-hallows-part-1-review/">abysmal </a><em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/11/16/harry-potter-and-the-deathly-hallows-part-1-review/">Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1</a>.</em><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/11/29/ea-movie-licenses-going-the-wrong-way-for-game-publishers/">EA: Movie licenses going the 'wrong way' for game publishers</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 29 Nov 2010 18:45:00 EST. While the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/26/wii-fanboy-interviews-the-angry-video-game-nerd/"><em>Angry Video Game Nerd</em></a> series continues to grow in popularity, a legion of imitators -- err, "inspir&eacute;es" -- have arisen from the depths of YouTube. While most appear to simply swap "Angry Video Game Nerd" with a few synonyms and reduce the effort, quality, and obtainable entertainment of the video, one manages to make the formula something completely his own. Alaskan native Derek, AKA <a href="http://www.youtube.com/user/lophatjello">lophatjello</a>, has created the "Happy Video Game Nerd." While the self-explanatory premise may sound eye-roll-inducing, one would be hard-pressed to ignore his passion for the retro games he highlights after watching a video of his. And that is a quality which I value greatly: unbridled passion and optimism for gaming. We're too often deluged by a flood of pessimism and jaded cynicism from the gaming world. <br /><br />Very recently, Derek covered the NES semi-classic <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nigaqFqg5cw"><em>Ducktales</em></a>. He labels it as a "kick-ass licensed game." This is a notable statement, as conventional gaming knowledge tells us that a license is often indicative of a terrible game. While there are always exceptions to rules, I feel confident that most who are reading this post can agree that licenses are too often a kiss of death. Yet the HVGN is correct; <em>Ducktales</em> is a pretty awesome licensed game. Here, in my humble opinion, are the Top 5 games based on popular film and television. <br /><br /> </div> <br /> <div align="center"> </div> <div class="buttontext"> <div align="center"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/15/top-5-5" id="ninbutton">NEXT &gt;&gt; </a></div> </div> <style type="text/css"> #ninbutton { border-style: solid; border-color: #000; border-width: 2px; background-color: #BBB; color: #000; text-decoration: none; width: 100px; text-align: center; padding: 2px 2px 2px 2px; margin: 2px 2px 2px 2px; } .buttontext { color: #000; text-decoration: none; font: bold 14pt Helvetica; } #ninbutton:hover { text-decoration: none; color: #BBB; background-color: #000; } </style> <center> </center><br /> <div style="border-top: 1px solid; padding-top: 5px;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/category/top-five/"><img hspace="4" vspace="4" border="1" align="left" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/07/top5_thumbnail_kd_20080702.jpg" alt="" /></a><em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/category/top-five/">The Top 5</a> is a weekly feature that provides us with a forum to share our opinions on various aspects of the video game culture, and provides you with a forum to tell us how wrong we are. THQ isn't afraid to make acquisitions, but the company's CEO says it can grow without buying other companies. CEO Brian Farrell tells <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/technologyNews/idUSN0332399620080404?pageNumber=2&amp;virtualBrandChannel=0">Reuters</a> that there are other opportunities in the market due to the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/02/activision-and-vivendi-merge-in-18-billion-deal/">Activision/Vivendi</a> and (proposed) <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/28/ea-amends-take-two-tender-offer-extends-deadline/">EA/Take-Two</a> mergers. He says THQ is at a point now where it can be more aggressive than "larger, slower firms."<br /><br />Although Farrell doesn't believe acquisitions are necessary to grow, the publisher did recently buy <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/13/rumor-thq-acquiring-elephant-entertainment/">Elephant Entertainment</a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/15/thq-to-acquire-rise-of-nations-developer-big-huge-games/">Big Huge Games</a>. He also believes that despite the US economy <strike>crashing</strike> slowing down, it won't affect the industry (a sentiment <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/04/analyst-wii-gta-iv-game-industry-all-winners-in-08/">shared by others</a>). THQ expects to announce a net loss for its last quarter ending in March and refused to discuss its forecast for the upcoming fiscal year. One guarantee is a lot of licensed games from THQ in the upcoming year ... and we mean <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/03/thq-profits-show-power-of-licensing/"><em>a lot</em></a>!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/04/thq-ceo-says-company-can-grow-without-acquisitions/">THQ CEO says company can grow without acquisitions</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 04 Apr 2008 13:00:00 EST. Even with a diminished E3, there's no controlling the wave of rumors that hit the Internet every year before the show. Why fight it? From now until E3 hits, we'll be posting one piece of wild speculation every day. Some may be patently ridiculous, and others just might turn out to be true. Even some of the ridiculous ones might turn out to be true! Rest assured, <em>everything will be totally made-up and unfounded.</em> Except, of course, when we speak about all the ass Reggie is going to kick. That part? Totally true.<br /><br /><strong>Rumor:</strong> With all the worthwhile (and many worthless) <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/02/ds-daily-movie-licenses/">licenses</a> already snatched up, videogame publishers are forced to scrape the bottom of the barrel for this year's holiday releases: Alexis de Tocqueville's <em>Democracy in America</em> and <a href="http://www.rap-cat.com/">Rapcat</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/09/conjecture-countdown-2-days-to-go/">Conjecture Countdown: 2 days to go</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 09 Jul 2007 10:45:00 EST.
