These four maps together previously retailed for 800 Microsoft points in total and include maps Radar Field, Island 902, Hive Complex and Trial Point. But be sure to note that Map Pack <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/21/get-it-while-its-hot-lost-planet-map-pack-3/">#3</a> is not part of this free offer and will still cost you 400 Microsoft points. Capcom also announced that an auto update should be released sometime this month to fix the multiplayer connectivity issues. Enjoy your newly free maps and be a little jealous that you can't have the PC exclusive Mega Man skin.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.majornelson.com/archive/2007/07/16/lost-planet-maps-to-become-free-this-friday.aspx">Major Nelson</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/17/lost-planet-map-packs-free-starting-friday/">Lost Planet Map Packs free starting Friday</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 17 Jul 2007 09:00:00 EST. Three more maps are coming to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/lostplanet"><em>Lost Planet: Extreme Condition</em></a>, bringing the grand total to 16 found locations. The third map pack will be available June 21 for 400 MS points (US $5.00).<br /><br />Featured in the map pack are a "frigid glacier with lots of peaks, nooks and crannies" (Ice Drop), "ancient temples set amidst a lush jungle" (Ruins) and "a throw-back to the good ol' days of pixelated 8-bit gaming" (Lost Technology). We're especially intrigued by Lost Technology -- how much is <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Capcom/">Capcom</a> embracing "8-bit gaming"? Will we see 8-bit textures and square trees?<br /><br />Two map packs for <em>Lost Planet, </em>with two maps apiece, are currently available for 400 MS points each, in addition to Battleground, a map once exclusive to the Collector's Edition now <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/01/lost-planet-ce-bonus-map-coming-to-xblm-on-june-7-for-free/">free to download</a> on Xbox Live.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/15/lost-planet-finds-third-map-pack-june-21/">Lost Planet finds third map pack June 21</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 15 Jun 2007 14:15:00 EST. Those are the details, now onto the media! Check out the <em>Lost Planet</em> Map Pack #3 gallery below featuring screenshots from the new maps as well as fly through videos embedded after the break. And what's up with the Lost Technology map? It's so 8-bit, it's very LEGO'esque, and is crazy in a fun over the top kind of way. Take a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/lost-planet-map-pack-3-1/277369/">look</a> and judge it yourself.<br /><br />
<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/15/three-new-lost-planet-maps-drop-next-week/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Three new Lost Planet maps drop next week</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/15/three-new-lost-planet-maps-drop-next-week/">Three new Lost Planet maps drop next week</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 15 Jun 2007 12:45:00 EST. He estimates a next-gen title starring the blue bomber would cost approximately $15 million. This is the part where it gets weird. Inafune says that from a producer standpoint he's worried about recouping the cost of development and more than once says he's waiting for someone rich to come along and fund it -- and it doesn't have to be Capcom.<br /><br />"I'm not even saying it has to be Capcom money. It could be EA, actually. I should say a company we have ties with, so maybe Rockstar," Inafune said in an <a href="http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3159987">interview</a> with 1UP (video after the break). He believes, from a producer standpoint, the financial risks are too great to make a new <span style="font-style: italic;">Mega Man</span> and says, "Realistically, I would have to say, I would be worried if it would recoup the money we spend."<br /><br />After that the interview turns into questions about <span style="font-style: italic;">Mega Man Legends 3</span> and having Inafune draw for the reporters. It is interesting to see the man behind the blue bomber say that a next-gen <span style="font-style: italic;">Mega Man</span> would be a financial gamble. Has the series lost any type of solid financial backing? Is Capcom taking a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/13/two-new-ds-titles-for-mega-mans-20th-anniversary/">breather</a> from spending money and upgrading the series to next-gen by focusing on other IPs? Could Inafune just be sick of doing <em>Mega Man</em>? What we do know is that Inafune has plenty on his plate right now with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/10/dead-rising-sequels-shambling-forth/">sequels to Dead Rising</a> and the rumored Lost Planet follow up.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/01/inafune-worried-about-recouping-next-gen-mega-man-cost/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Inafune worried about recouping next-gen Mega Man cost</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/01/inafune-worried-about-recouping-next-gen-mega-man-cost/">Inafune worried about recouping next-gen Mega Man cost</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 01 Jun 2007 12:35:00 EST. Capcom signaled its self-described return to more frequent PC releases by officially announcing a PC version of <em>Lost Planet: Extreme Condition</em> for June. The Windows XP and Vista game will support DirectX 10 for gamers with those <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/02/14/nvidia-launches-cheap-er-directx-10-cards/">shiny video cards</a>, but DirectX 9 players are also invited into the snowy world.<br /><br />The PC version will run at resolutions up to 2,560x1600, making the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/11/17/pc-gamer-lures-ps3-buyer-with-7500-gaming-rig/">console war's</a> "True HD" sound like a tired marketing slogan. (Oh wait, it already did.) While the graphic effects beyond resolution will also be improved, little else is certain to change.<br /><br />Capcom told us at its Gamer's Day event that the PC game may include new multiplayer maps and even increase its 16-player online cap, but both updates are still pending. However, multiplayer matches between Xbox 360 gamers and PC players will not be supported.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/lost-planet-pc/">Lost Planet (PC)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/lost-planet-pc/#212618"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/04/capture0019-00001_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/lost-planet-pc/#212617"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/04/capture0017-00000_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/lost-planet-pc/#212616"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/04/capture0002-üq00000_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/lost-planet-pc/#212615"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/04/capture0044-00000_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/lost-planet-pc/#212614"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/04/capture0004-00000_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/13/its-official-lost-planet-finds-pc-gamers/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>It's official: Lost Planet finds PC gamers</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/13/its-official-lost-planet-finds-pc-gamers/">It's official: Lost Planet finds PC gamers</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 13 Apr 2007 20:00:00 EST. The second multiplayer map pack for Capcom's frigid Xbox 360 shooter, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/lostplanet"><em>Lost Planet</em></a>, has been <a href="http://blogs.capcomusa.com/blogs/news.php/2007/04/02/new_lost_planet_maps_hive_complex_aamp_t">scheduled</a> to arrive on the Live Marketplace this Friday, April 6. The two maps contained therein are "Hive Complex," a thankfully hygienic mine with bridges and tunnels scattered across a mountainside, and "Trial Point," a modern office complex featuring "a photorealistic backdrop of a busy city center." Capcom's <a href="http://blogs.capcomusa.com/blogs/news.php/2007/04/02/new_lost_planet_maps_hive_complex_aamp_t">community website</a> holds video footage of the maps, both of which look graphically splendid (if you're into that sort of thing). <br /><br />The asking price is 400 MS points, or 5 of your nigh incomprehensible American "bucks".<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/02/new-lost-planet-maps-slated-for-6-april/">New Lost Planet maps slated for 6 April</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 02 Apr 2007 23:30:00 EST. On Friday, April 6th <em>Lost Planet</em>'s map pack #2 will be released to the XBLM featuring two new maps and will set you back 400 Microsoft Points just like it's old brother <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/03/09/new-lost-planet-multiplayer-maps-released/">map pack #1</a>. The two new maps are called "Hive Complex", which is set in an abandoned mine, and "Trial Point" set in a futuristic business complex. Preview videos of the new maps are available after the jump. So says Capcom's senior director of strategic planning and research, Christian Svensson, posting on the official Capcom forums in the midst of a <em>Devil May Cry</em> outcry. When <a href="http://ww2.capcom.com/BBS/showthread.php?s=6dac927fca4d39c21f5b219f8e66876e&amp;p=225626#post225626">asked by fans</a> whether the company's new mulitplatform strategy would extend to their <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/10/dead-rising-sequels-shambling-forth/">pair</a> of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/02/21/npd-lost-planet-leads-strong-january-game-sales/">successful</a> Xbox 360 titles, Svensson <a href="http://ww2.capcom.com/BBS/showpost.php?p=225626&amp;postcount=6">explains</a> that "<em>Dead Rising</em> and <em>Lost Planet</em> are not slated to appear on Wii or PS3," noting that the reasons for the continued exclusivity "are quite convoluted" and are bound by a slew of suspicious non-disclosure agreements. <br />
<br />
He goes on to say that Capcom's current approach -- which sees <em>Resident Evil 5</em> and <em>Devil May Cry 4</em> coming to both PS3 and Xbox 360 -- is for future titles and isn't meant to be applied in a "retroactive" manner. Of course, this comes just days after Svensson used the forum to <a href="http://ww2.capcom.com/BBS/showpost.php?p=225065&amp;postcount=46">respond</a> to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/03/22/loyalists-cry-over-devil-may-cry-on-xbox-360/">sulking petitioners and their disdain</a> for <em>Devil May Cry </em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/03/19/devil-may-cry-4-no-longer-a-playstation-3-exclusive/">gracing multiple platforms</a>. <br />
<br />
"We are certainly moved that people are so passionate about our products that they would go to such extremes," he said in <a href="http://ww2.capcom.com/BBS/showthread.php?p=225065#post225065">a seperate thread</a>. "At the same time we feel that allowing more people access to our content pleases far more people than it displeases (after all, we're not denying <em>DMC4</em> to anyone that was already going to get it). It really is the best decision for the company and for consumers."<br />
<br />
Apparently, <em>Dead Rising</em> and <em>Lost Planet </em>simply missed the multiplatform <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/03/23/microsoft-secret-agents-resort-to-subterfuge-at-ps3-euro-launche/">boat</a>.<br />

The multiplayer map pack #1 will include the two new maps "Radar Field" and "Island 902" and will set you back 400 Microsoft Points. So, according to our sixth grade math skills, that works out to be around $2.50 per multiplayer map. Are you willing to pay over $2 for a multiplayer map or does that just seem a tad ridiculous? It's kind of a hard pill to swallow since we received two free maps for <em>Gears</em> a few months ago ... although it was sponsored by the Discovery Channel. The first thing it did was add some features, such as seeing a player's national flag in the lobby, pre-game and post-game results. It also shows who's talking in-game and in the lobby with a ")))" to the left of their gamertag in team-based games. Finally, in the lobby, your connection strength to a player is signified by a "!", and the brighter it is, the better your connection. The other set of fixes were to bugs found in the game, due to lag, as well as a few exploits. For full details on what to expect next time you log on, click the "Read" link. So do the fixes to the gameplay make you want to put some more time into <em>Lost Planet's</em> multiplayer?<br /><br />Oh, and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stevenote#.22One_more_thing.E2.80.A6.22">one more thing</a>...<br /><br />Brian Dunn says that the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/02/15/video-new-lost-planet-maps/">downloadable maps</a> should be available March 9th or in close to that date.<br /><br />[Thanks, AoE]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/03/02/lost-planet-auto-update-details/">Lost Planet Auto-Update Details</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 02 Mar 2007 14:30:00 EST. NPD recently announced $549 million in non-PC software sales for the month, up an impressive 22 percent when compared week-on-week to last January. Add in $505 million in hardware sales and almost $200 million in accessories and the industry as a whole recorded a huge $1.25 billion in overall sales for the five weeks ending Feb. 3.</p>
<p>The Wii dominated hardware sales, as <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/02/21/wii-outsells-both-360-and-ps3-in-january-despite-shortages/">previously reported</a>, but software was spread out among all the major systems. The Xbox 360's <em>Lost Planet: Extreme Condition</em> led the pack, with system-compatriots <em>Gears of War</em> and <em>Rainbow Six: Vegas</em> close behind at No 3 and No. 9, respectively. But it was a PS2 game, <em>Guitar Hero II</em>, that maintained the second-place showing from December and took the No. 2 spot. Both versions of <em>Twilight Princess</em> joined <em>Wario Ware</em> in representing Nintendo consoles in the top 10, while <em>Resistance: Fall of Man</em> was the only PS3 title on the list, coming in at No. 8.</p>
<p>When combined with the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/02/21/strong-q1-sales-point-to-less-cyclical-gaming-calendar/">healthy January reported by British retailers</a>, we could be witnessing the beginning of the end of the traditional January lull. While it's hard to match the holiday season in terms of sheer sales volume, these January numbers show that good games can still sell just after the Christmas rush.</p>

Speaking specifically about <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/lostplanet"><em>Lost Planet</em></a>, Bellfield notes that Capcom's marketing strategy was to involve the community from the beginning. In particular, several changes were made to <em>Lost Planet</em> after Capcom received feedback about the two <em>Lost Planet </em>demos that were available on Marketplace. Further adding to the <em>Lost Planet</em> community, Capcom made fansite kits available, even naming the three best <em>Lost Planet</em> fansites and including them in the manual of the game. Bellfield notes the important distinction between fostering community and falsely creating one (in reference to the "All I want for Christmas is a PSP" <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/12/11/sony-marketers-are-horrible-liars-pretend-to-run-fansite/">fiasco</a>). We have to hand it to Capcom, they did a good job marketing <em>Lost Planet</em> and keeping the online community informed. <br /><br />Overall, the interview is a good read, especially for those interested in the business side of the game industry. Whether that is true or not is irrelevant. We're here to focus on the latest rumors. There are a couple of games being tossed around and, for the most part, aren't surprising but worth talking about.</p>
<ul>
    <li><em>Guitar Hero</em> is making its way onto the Wii, apparently. That'll turn out pretty fun. Probably. </li>
    <li>A videogame based on the upcoming Ironman movie is in the works for the PS3 and XBox 360, under the creative umbrella of Sega and developed by Secret Level. </li>
    <li>Capcom intends to continue the <em>Lost Planet</em> franchise on the 360 and PS3 with an unconfirmed title as of yet titled "<em>Lost Planet Wars</em>". This game will probably be an RTS or some other strategy-oriented title, much like the game following <em>Halo 3</em>, titled <em>Halo Wars</em>, will be. </li>
</ul>
<p>So, we're gonna support these rumors because... well, they're not exactly rumors. These are expected! Not entirely, but if these things didn't exist, that would be silly and sad. Maybe the next <em>Lost Planet </em>will be something completely different or completely the same as the first game. Leave your thoughts.</p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/02/19/rumor-pack-of-games-that-may-or-may-not-be-in-the-works/">RUMOR: pack of games that may or may not be in the works</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 19 Feb 2007 14:30:00 EST. It will come in the form of two new maps named "Island 902" and "Radar Field", and will be priced at slightly expensive 400 Microsoft Points. That's an Arcade title right there! Well, none the less, the screens look pretty, so its not all bad. Still, two maps for 400 points seems a little sketchy. Is that a little too pricey for you, or given how Ubisoft has been acting lately, is it par for the course? More screens after the break.<br />

The exclusive map present in the Lost Planet collector's edition, "Battleground," will be released for free at a later stage.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/lost-planet-map-pack-1/">Lost Planet - Map Pack 1</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/lost-planet-map-pack-1/#161856"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/02/lost-planet-map-pack-island1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/lost-planet-map-pack-1/#161853"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/02/lost-planet-map-pack-island2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/lost-planet-map-pack-1/#161858"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/02/lost-planet-map-pack-island3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/lost-planet-map-pack-1/#161843"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/02/lost-planet-map-pack-island4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/lost-planet-map-pack-1/#161852"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/02/lost-planet-map-pack-island5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/02/16/first-lost-planet-map-pack-hits-march-9/">First Lost Planet map pack hits March 9</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 16 Feb 2007 17:15:00 EST. One of the maps shown has been available to owners of the collector's edition since <em>Lost Planet</em>'s release, but the rest are all new. The maps show off a broad range of locales, one of which may or may not be <em>underwater</em>. No, seriously, there's a submarine in one of them. Plenty of the maps forgo the icy cold nature of <em>Lost Planet</em>, offering wasted cityscapes, beautiful mountainsides, and a radar facility. Details of the release date and price have not been announced.<br /><br />Check out the video and tell us what you think.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/02/15/video-new-lost-planet-maps/">Video: new Lost Planet maps</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 15 Feb 2007 11:30:00 EST. Other Xbox 360 titles expected to aid in overall sales growth include <em>Call of Duty 3</em>, <em>Rainbow Six Vegas</em>, and (duh) <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/02/09/gow-rakes-in-8-aias-awards/"><em>Gears of War</em></a>. Should the prediction hold true, it would mean a strong start for 2007. With lots of exclusives and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/12/28/xbox-360-the-best-of-2007/">system selling titles</a> shipping in the next few months, here's hoping the 360 maintains its momentum through the typically dry spring season.<br /><br />Official NPD numbers are expected February 15th.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/02/13/lost-planet-could-push-game-sales-by-30/">Lost Planet could push game sales by 30%</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 13 Feb 2007 17:00:00 EST. He's referring to how Japan's video game developers have isolated themselves, refusing to cater to the western audience, and ultimately using once big franchises as a crutch. Takeuchi goes on to say "<em>western developers borrowed and learned from Japanese developers all those years when Japan was ahead</em>" and that now "<em>Japanese developers need to learn from western developers</em>". He goes on to say that Capcom is already trying to adapt to a more worldly view, looking at games as an all encompassing form of entertainment. Do you think Japanese developers need to cater more to a western audience, change up their formula, and now learn from the student (aka, western developers)? We'd like to see both Japanese gamers and western gamers find a happy medium when it comes to eachother's content, but we wonder how different each group really is ...<br /><br /><font color="#ff0000">Update 1:</font> Fixed our source information, sorry Brian Dunn.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.gamepro.com/news.cfm?article_id=95548">GamePro</a>]<br />[Thanks, Jonah]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/02/06/japans-inward-game-development-woes/">Japan's inward game development woes [update 1]</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 06 Feb 2007 12:30:00 EST. The thing is that <em>Lost Planet</em>, the actual game, cost $20 million. Another $20 million was spent on the advertising, marketing, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/12/lost-planet-launch-event-recap/">parties</a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/02/02/lost-planet-photochop-contest-the-best-of-the-rest/">promotions</a>. Spending as much on marketing as the cost of developing the game, now that is hardcore and it was all worth it.<br /><br />Capcom already shipped 1 million units of<em> Lost Planet</em> before the game's Jan. 12 launch, probably feeling confident following <em>Dead Rising's</em> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/10/dead-rising-sequels-shambling-forth/">success</a>, which was based far more on old-school buzz post-E3 (may she rest in peace). The new-school approach by Capcom, according to Forbes, is the work of Mark Beaumont.<br /><br />Beaumont, 51, has been around the ad biz for a bit. He changed the way Capcom marketed in the West, Beaumont says, "They advertised like it was 1985 ... It was all very formulaic." According to Forbes, gaming magazines have lost relevance and MTV isn't hitting the right demographic. Beaumont wanted the <em>Lost Planet</em> demo on Xbox Live, commercials in movie theaters showing <em>Casino Royale</em> and other places of relevance. That Beaumont may be a sneaky fellow, but he's getting sales results out of a pretty <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/11/metareview-lost-planet-extreme-condition/">unremarkable</a> game.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/02/03/lost-planet-lost-40-million-to-find-success/">Lost Planet lost $40 million to find success</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 03 Feb 2007 12:30:00 EST. The patch includes several fixes for the lobbies and the multiplayer game itself. Some of these "fixes" are actually oversights that should have been in the game from the beginning -- a practice that is becoming more and more common these days. We find it somewhat shocking that the game shipped without an icon that lets players know who's talking in the post-game lobby. Still, while many of these fixes are basic things that should have been there in the first place, it's nice to see that Capcom is making an effort. See a list of updates and bug fixes after the break.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/02/01/lost-planet-patch-defrosted-march-9th/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Lost Planet patch defrosted March 9th</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/02/01/lost-planet-patch-defrosted-march-9th/">Lost Planet patch defrosted March 9th</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 01 Feb 2007 12:30:00 EST. Over 1,000 people showed up for the fun to play some multiplayer, get their drink on, eat a little, and just have a blast. Over at <a href="http://blog.lostplanetcommunity.com/blogs/brian.php/2007/01/12/launch_event_report">Brian Dunn's blog</a> he posted a nice recap of the event including photos and an analysis of the multiplayer tournament. All in all it looked like a blast and we wish we could have attended (ice sculptures are our weakness). We posted some of our favorite photos after the break and you'll find lots more after the jump. Nice launch event Capcom, now don't forget to throw a similar party when <em>Dead</em> <em>Rising 2</em> comes out.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/14/lost-planet-san-fran-launch-event-recap/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Lost Planet San Fran launch event recap</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/14/lost-planet-san-fran-launch-event-recap/">Lost Planet San Fran launch event recap</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 14 Jan 2007 08:00:00 EST. Capcom was hoping to sell 740,000 units for them to consider <em>Lost Planet</em> a success, so they must be smiling ear to ear with these sales numbers. Even though the game has received lukewarm <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/11/metareview-lost-planet-extreme-condition/">reviews</a>, the marketing and hype surrounding the game must have helped in moving units. We're smelling sequel. Maybe in the next <em>Lost Planet</em> we'll finally get to control an army of killer snowmen that throw ice cube trays at mechs. Now that's entertaining! Patent pending Capcom, but if you like our idea feel free to get in touch with us. Trashed cars. Mangled computer parts. Free booze. Some <em>Lost Planets</em>. Ryan Olson has captured images from and insights into the launch event over on his blog Red Herring.<br /><br />Olson's own impressions of the game were mixed (similar to the <a target="_blank" href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/11/metareview-lost-planet-extreme-condition/">general consensus</a>). He was turned off by the "lethargic" character movement, but moved by <em>Lost Planet's</em> visuals, particularly the smoke effects. Anyone else in attendance last night? Xbox Live <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/12/19/lost-planet-demos-hit-platinum-mark/" target="_blank">demos</a> (that spawned a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/12/13/capcom-listens-fixes-lost-planet-multiplayer/" target="_blank">patch</a>), <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/12/01/lost-planet-grapples-for-position-at-consumer-mecca/" target="_blank">Times Square ad space</a>, and tonight's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/06/weve-got-tickets-to-the-lost-planet-launch-event-in-san-fran/" target="_blank">launch party</a> have all contributed to a massive wave of hype that will come crashing down tomorrow. Have our senses been sufficiently flooded?<br /><br />The clump of reviews that have trickled out since the game launched in Japan and Europe (Dec. 21 &amp; 31, respectively) has been decidedly mixed. Timing is on Capcom's side however, as these first few months of the New Year are commonly stale, devoid of competition. Our bet's on <em>Lost Planet</em> being a retail hit, but don't count on many remembering the game when it comes time to praise the year's best in December.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/11/metareview-lost-planet-extreme-condition/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Metareview - Lost Planet: Extreme Condition</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/11/metareview-lost-planet-extreme-condition/">Metareview - Lost Planet: Extreme Condition</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 11 Jan 2007 17:23:00 EST. Capcom is certainly going <a href="http://culture.joystiq.com/2007/01/06/weve-got-tickets-to-the-lost-planet-launch-event-in-san-fran/">all-out</a> with <em>Lost Planet </em>promotion. Seriously, it's some impressive marketing work. We've still got copies of the game to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/06/joyswag-photochop-win-capcoms-lost-planet/">give away</a> for your masterful pieces of photochop art.<br /><br />The Capcom contest is quite a bit of work and involves you buying the game around launch to even stand a chance. The first step is to accomplish the following criteria:<br />
<ul>
    <li>Beat the game on any difficulty level.</li>
    <li>Play 100 ranked matches online.</li>
    <li>Get a medal in each game type in ranked matches online.</li>
</ul>
You must be one of the first 10 people to do this and then send Brian a private message on his XBL gamertag. Winners get a poster signed by the <em>Lost Planet </em>development honchos: Inafune (Executive Producer), Takeuchi (Producer) and Oguro (Director). They'll also win a <em>Lost Planet </em>t-shirt, with one of three different styles to choose from. Most importantly, entries must be posted to <a href="http://www.capcom.com/BBS/showthread.php?t=10791">THIS</a> thread on the Capcom boards. We wish all companies would put this much inventive muscle behind marketing, even if the game bites, the promotional push deserves kudos.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/11/capcoms-official-lost-planet-contest/">Capcom's official Lost Planet contest</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 11 Jan 2007 03:00:00 EST. Did your parents really dislike you or were you a clone who escaped? Very simplistic design, but well-done and very zen. Meditate a bit while you stare at it and chant your favorite mantra. It brings <span style="font-style: italic;">Marble Madness</span> to mind, and also looks like a sweet game to be played with a Wiimote.<br /><br />Check out winner number two after the jump, and remind yourself one more time about all the contest details. That is, if they aren't already burned into your brain by this point. If you haven't entered yet, give it a go. If you've been trying and haven't won, keep it going. We've only got ten copies of the game to give out, and a lot of entries, but you never know what'll happen.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/10/joyswag-photochop-lost-planet-found-entries-day-four/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Joyswag Photochop: Lost Planet, found entries - Day Four</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/10/joyswag-photochop-lost-planet-found-entries-day-four/">Joyswag Photochop: Lost Planet, found entries - Day Four</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 10 Jan 2007 22:52:00 EST. When asked directly about the possibility of an HDMI-enabled Xbox 360 somewhere down the line, Satchell said "If you want to get great HD, I think we've got a good solution for that. In the future it's interesting to see where standards evolve to." He then follows up this statement with "At the moment, everything you might have seen is just looking at our experimentation back in Redmond, not really a product that we're thinking about announcing."<br /><br />Rumors of an HDMI-enabled Xbox 360 have been kicking around ever since Microsoft introduced 1080P for the Xbox 360 via component this past September. Since then, everything from the Lost Planet "<a href="http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3155406">typo</a>" to leaked shots of modified 360's have set off alarms across the internet. So while it's great to know that Microsoft is looking into every possibility, it's also hard to swallow that they won't be actively pursuing this opportunity in the marketplace .<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/10/microsoft-confirms-upgraded-360-for-research/">Microsoft confirms upgraded 360 for research</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 10 Jan 2007 15:25:00 EST. It was hard to tear ourselves away from watching video repeats of Steve Jobs' Apple keynote that took place this morning, but we managed to do it so we could judge the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/06/joyswag-photochop-win-capcoms-lost-planet/"><em>Lost Planet</em></a> entries that keep pouring in. We're going to eventually have to put up a gallery of these, because we have a lot more than ten awesome entries. Thanks so much for giving us such great stuff to look at and choose from. Hopefully some of you are pursuing careers in graphic design with those mad skillz.<br /><br />Our first winning entry comes to us straight out of the annals of history, bringing you an extremely retro gaming dosage of John Milton. This has to be the most highbrow entry we've received yet, and that's including the large number of <span style="font-style: italic;">Lost Pants</span> entries we're getting (some of which have been great). Nice work Shaun, you've both impressed and shamed us at the same time, since we read the Cliff's Notes version of this in high school.<br /><br />Check out the second winner after the jump, and refresh your memory on all the contest details. Keep 'em coming, because we're loving everything you've been sending.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/09/joyswag-photochop-lost-planet-found-entries-day-three/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Joyswag Photochop: Lost Planet, found entries - Day Three</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/09/joyswag-photochop-lost-planet-found-entries-day-three/">Joyswag Photochop: Lost Planet, found entries - Day Three</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 09 Jan 2007 23:12:00 EST. This week's gift isn't some crappy t-shirt hastily purchased at an airport gift shop either. No, this week is a doozy. It's a general policy that we like to have at least three titles to merit a bulleted list, but this week is special. It's the first game of the new year <em>and</em> it's a pretty big game to boot. As such, we present you with the combined North American/European shipping list for the week of January 8.<br /><u><br /></u><strong>Shipping this week in North America and Europe:</strong><u><br /></u>

Also worth noting, Japan will get its first crack at <em>Viva Pi&ntilde;ata</em> this week (except it has been renamed <em>Atsumare! Pi&ntilde;ata</em>). Let's introduce them. Japan, this is addiction. Addiction, Japan. <br /><br />So, who's picking up <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/07/ign-reviews-lost-planet/"><em>Lost Planet</em></a>?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/08/shipping-this-week-frickin-lost-planet-edition/">Shipping this week: frickin' Lost Planet edition!</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 08 Jan 2007 10:30:00 EST. You have been heeding the call in spades. It's only the first day of the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/06/joyswag-photochop-win-capcoms-lost-planet/"><span style="font-style: italic;">Lost Planet</span> Photochop contest</a>, and already we've had a ton of terrific entries. For those of you who haven't entered yet, these should get your creative juices flowing. Check out today's two winners: the first one is from Manu and features the oh so lovely Kate from <span style="font-style: italic;">Lost</span> gracing the cover. We've received a ton of <span style="font-style: italic;">Lost</span> TV show entries, but this one takes the cake so far. Keep 'em coming though, and have a look at the second winner and a recap of the contest details after the jump.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/07/joyswag-photochop-lost-planet-found-entries-day-one/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Joyswag Photochop: Lost Planet, found entries - Day One</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/07/joyswag-photochop-lost-planet-found-entries-day-one/">Joyswag Photochop: Lost Planet, found entries - Day One</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 07 Jan 2007 23:02:00 EST.
