It's got Vader fights, rampaging rancors and is the closest physical manifestation of <a href="http://youtu.be/kR3PT5E0XDo">that one kid</a>'s dream journal we may ever get.<br /><br />Now you can discover how <em>not goo</em>d the game is yourself with a free playable demo - if you're a Gold subscriber and own a Kinect sensor, that is. We may all have The Force inside us, but you still have to purchase your own Kinect sensor.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/05/08/i-suggest-a-new-strategy-r2-let-them-have-a-kinect-star-wars-d/">I suggest a new strategy, R2: Let them have a Kinect Star Wars demo</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 08 May 2012 02:00:00 EST. The company filed for the name "Star Wars 1313" for use with video games, as well as toys, trading cards, sticker books, pencil sharpeners, online social networking services, and anything else that can possibly bear the <em>Star Wars </em>logo.<br /><br />The document contains no indication of what "Star Wars 1313" means; we knew the series was set "a long time ago," but don't know if that translates to 700 years in Earth time. However, a quick <a href="http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/CT-1313">Wookieepedia</a> search reveals "CT-1313" as a name used by Boba Fett in a <em>Star Wars</em> novel. So it could be a Boba Fett-focused thing. <a href="http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Dengar">Dengar's</a> still waiting for his big break.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/05/07/lucasfilm-applies-for-star-wars-1313-trademark/">Lucasfilm applies for 'Star Wars 1313' trademark</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 07 May 2012 11:00:00 EST. The device's input lag combined with the hardware's finicky nature simply won't allow it. That's not to say that <em>Kinect Star Wars</em> isn't without its merits. There are a few decent ideas hidden in its sub-games, even some fun to be had, but the overall package is lacking.<br /><br />I suspect some Star Wars fans (or parents of Star Wars fans) will find its Force pull irresistible, but even the most dedicated Jedi is likely to find it underwhelming.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/kinect-star-wars-2-7-12/">Kinect: Star Wars (2/7/12)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/kinect-star-wars-2-7-12/#4801655"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/02/dancec3pounlock01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/kinect-star-wars-2-7-12/#4801656"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/02/kswduels-of-fate01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/kinect-star-wars-2-7-12/#4801657"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/02/kswduels-of-fate02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/kinect-star-wars-2-7-12/#4801658"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/02/kswduels-of-fate03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/kinect-star-wars-2-7-12/#4801659"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/02/kswduels-of-fate04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/04/04/kinect-star-wars-review/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Kinect Star Wars review: Needs Force feedback</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/04/04/kinect-star-wars-review/">Kinect Star Wars review: Needs Force feedback</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 04 Apr 2012 14:00:00 EST. Game director James Ohlen describes the changes coming to<em> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/star-wars-the-old-republic">Star Wars: The Old Republic</a></em>, one of which is guild banks for the thousands of guilds still playing. Someone in Germany -- perhaps even some <em>people</em> -- illegally pirated a copy of <em>Prison Break: The Conspiracy</em>. Hard to believe as it may be, it appears to be the case according to TorrentFreak, who delved into German public records looking for game publishers who have employed German law to track down (and demand money from) people who allegedly pirated various games. In Germany, Koch Media publishes the Prison Break game, and has been demanding settlements of "several hundred Euros" from offending IP addresses.<br />
<br />
The records indicate that several major publishers, either directly or through subsidiaries/secondary parties, have been sending out letters to German citizens requesting varying levels of payment in return for <em>not being sued</em>. Where things get murky, however, is how the publishers are seeking out the accused pirates, using not always reliable "IP address-only evidence" -- easily circumvented with proxy domains and such. You know, <em>hacker stuff</em>.<br />
<br />
TorrentFreak's report indicates that a variety of publishers and distributors are involved, including (but not limited to): Atari, Koch Media (representing Techland's <em>Dead Island</em> and <em>Prison Break</em>, and Eidos/Square Enix's <em>Deus Ex: Human Revolution</em> as well as <em>Dungeon Siege 3</em> and various Final Fantasy titles), Daedalic Entertainment (representing LucasArts), Codemasters, BitComposer, Ubisoft, Kalypso Media, dtp entertainment, and Aerosoft. It is currently unclear how many settlement notices have been sent out by each company, or if any will continue doing so after these actions have been brought to light.<br />

	<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/23/star-wars-the-old-republic-hits-a-million-players-28-million-h/"><img alt="" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/10/swtorgrindgdc.jpg" style="width: 530px; height: 261px; border-width: 0px; border-style: solid; margin: 0px;" /></a></div>
EA has announced that <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/star-wars-the-old-republic"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em></a> has assembled more than a million registered players in its first week officially live, earning it the self-granted title of "fastest growing subscription MMO in history."<br />
<br />
A million players is a solid milestone, but EA and BioWare still have some parsecs to travel to make <em>SW:TOR</em> a resounding success: The beta test, don't forget, was able to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/12/05/star-wars-the-old-republic-beta-test-attracts-2-million-players/">pick up twice as many players</a> than are currently registered. EA's management <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/03/18/ea-expecting-two-million-subscribers-for-star-wars-the-old-repu/">expects at least two million players</a> to call the game successful at all, according to previous reports.<br />
<br />
EA says that players have logged in more than 28 million game hours (no word on how many hours spent <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/19/bioware-looking-into-star-wars-the-old-republic-server-queues/">waiting in login queues</a>, of course), and in that time have created 3.8 million characters, split about evenly across Jedi and Sith. More than 2 <em>billion</em> NPCs have been killed in the eight days since launch as well, which is quite the virtual genocide. You can check out the official stats and announcement below.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/23/star-wars-the-old-republic-hits-a-million-players-28-million-h/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Star Wars: The Old Republic hits a million players, 28 million hours played</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/23/star-wars-the-old-republic-hits-a-million-players-28-million-h/">Star Wars: The Old Republic hits a million players, 28 million hours played</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 23 Dec 2011 18:15:00 EST. This week, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/star-wars-the-old-republic"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic </em></a>finally launches after years of development -- and it's those years that are the focus of this eight minute launch documentary. Believe it or not, in eight minutes you can pretty much cover every aspect of a major MMO launch.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/21/star-wars-the-old-republic-launch-doc-recounts-years-of-develop/">Star Wars: The Old Republic launch doc recounts years of development</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 21 Dec 2011 23:15:00 EST. Ryan Langley is a level designer at Halfbrick Studios, so he's used to putting secret rewards in hard-to-find places, but in this case he found one. <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/Rlan2/status/142003381798567936">He discovered</a> that both LucasArts and BioWare have filed for a classification in the Australian government for a computer game called <em>Paper, Scissors, Stone</em>. Unfortunately, we have no idea what that is at all.<br />
<br />
The classification does mention that it's related to "science fiction themes" and that the game will have "online content." When you combine that with the fact that both LucasArts and BioWare are listed on the mark (along with publisher EA), it's possible that, even despite the M rating for mature audiences, this could have something to do with the upcoming <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/the-old-republic"><em>The Old Republic</em></a> MMO. A standalone minigame of some kind? That's just a guess, but yes please on that.<br />
<br />
At any rate, we'll probably hear about this one soon. <p>
	<a href="http://www.ponycorns.com/"><em>Sissy's Magical Ponycorn Adventure</em></a> may be one of the weirdest anomalies in gaming lately -- it's a LucasArts-style point-and-click adventure game that was actually designed by someone who wasn't even alive when any of those games were released. 5-year-old Cassie Creighton designed the game <a href="http://www.untoldentertainment.com/blog/2011/05/24/sissys-magical-ponycorn-adventure/">with her father, Ryan, at a Toronto game jam</a>, and when it was published online, it started spreading like wildfire around the blogs and Twitter accounts of game developers and fans, leading all the way up to its current status as a finalist at this weekend's IndieCade Festival.<br />
	<br />
	Dad Ryan Henson Creighton does enjoy all of the attention that his daughter's game is getting, but he told me at IndieCade that he's far from an innocent bystander. "People think that I'm some sort of oblivious dad," he says, "that sort of slammed it together using GameMaker or something, but we actually spent a good chunk of our money building a framework."<br />
	<br />
	That framework is called <a href="http://www.untoldentertainment.com/blog/2011/06/28/how-the-graphic-adventure-video-game-genre-can-save-your-kids-tv-to-game-360-transmedia-strategy/">UGAGS</a>, which Creighton originally designed for educational games, and while yes, <em>Sissy's</em> voicework, graphics, and plot were all designed by Cassie, her dad did most of the technical work with his own engine. "<em>Sissy's Magical Adventure</em> was the fourth game we've used it on, and we're using it on a fifth game called <em>Spellirium</em>. So we're not new at this."</p><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/09/indiecade-2011-sissys-magical-ponycorn-misconceptions/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>IndieCade 2011: Sissy's Magical Ponycorn misconceptions</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/09/indiecade-2011-sissys-magical-ponycorn-misconceptions/">IndieCade 2011: Sissy's Magical Ponycorn misconceptions</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 09 Oct 2011 16:30:00 EST. On top of last month's outed job listing for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/22/lucasarts-job-listing-hints-at-in-development-open-world-rpg/">an open-world RPG</a>, LucasArts is now hiring for a first-person shooter, an aerial combat game and an action/adventure game. <a href="http://www.gamespot.com/news/6334433/lucasarts-hiring-for-fps-aerial-combat-games">GameSpot</a> noticed the listings, which call for <a href="https://www.lucasfilm.apply2jobs.com/ProfExt/index.cfm?fuseaction=mExternal.showJob&amp;RID=3497&amp;CurrentPage=2">a level designer for a FPS title</a>, a <a href="https://www.lucasfilm.apply2jobs.com/ProfExt/index.cfm?fuseaction=mExternal.showJob&amp;RID=3194&amp;CurrentPage=3">senior gameplay engineer for the aerial combat game</a> and <a href="https://www.lucasfilm.apply2jobs.com/ProfExt/index.cfm?fuseaction=mExternal.showJob&amp;RID=3169&amp;CurrentPage=2">a producer for an action/adventure title</a>. LucasArts sure seems busy these days!<br />
<br />
The aerial combat game seems like a no-brainer -- LucasArts has a stable of <em>Star Wars</em> aerial combat games it could pull from, so that's our guess considering the position emphasizes a familiarity with "space-based shooters." The other two require even more speculation ... and we certainly wouldn't mind seeing another <em><a href="http://joystiq.search.aol.com/search?q=star+wars+republic+commando&amp;invocationType=wl-joystiq">Republic Commando</a> </em>game.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/15/lucasarts-hiring-for-fps-aerial-combat-action-adventure-games/">LucasArts hiring for FPS, aerial combat, action/adventure games</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 15 Sep 2011 14:25:00 EST. We're sorry to break the news to such honorable professions as Jedi, Bounty Hunter and Trooper in such a public forum, but we will not be playing as you when <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/star-wars-the-old-republic"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em></a> launches. Rejoice potential padawan! Bioware announced at its PAX <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/star-wars-the-old-republic"><em>Star Wars: The Old<br />
Republic</em></a> panel that it will roll out a whole slew of beta invites to<br />
appease your debilitating midichlorian habit. Starting September 2, keep an eye on your<br />
inbox, as the company will periodically send them out during the month.<br />
<br />
They will, however, still limit the number of day one copies available. Do try and<br />
keep your blasters, lightsabers and second lightsabers holstered until then.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/28/bioware-greatly-expanding-the-pool-of-testers-for-star-wars-t/">Bioware 'greatly expanding the pool of testers' for Star Wars: The Old Republic</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 28 Aug 2011 22:30:00 EST. <em>Kinect Star Wars</em> and the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/21/r2d2-style-xbox-360-kinect-bundle-rolling-out-for-star-wars-kine/">R2D2-styled Xbox 360 Kinect bundle</a> will launch "beyond holiday 2011." Speaking to <a href="http://www.oxm.co.uk/32722/news/kinect-star-wars-delayed/">OXM</a>, Microsoft and LucasArts moved the game's release date (along with that of the console bundle) to "ensure the full potential of this title is realized."<br />

Microsoft and LucasArts plan to communicate additional timing at a later date. We've contacted our network of Bothans to obtain new information as soon as possible.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/xbox-360-limited-kinect-star-wars-bundle/">Xbox 360 Limited Kinect Star Wars Bundle</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/xbox-360-limited-kinect-star-wars-bundle/#4312003"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/07/starwarskinectle7_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/xbox-360-limited-kinect-star-wars-bundle/#4311996"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/07/starwarskinectle1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/xbox-360-limited-kinect-star-wars-bundle/#4312004"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/07/starwarskinectle8_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/xbox-360-limited-kinect-star-wars-bundle/#4311997"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/07/starwarskinectle2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/xbox-360-limited-kinect-star-wars-bundle/#4312006"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/07/starwarskinectle10_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/24/kinect-star-wars-and-inspired-console-bundle-to-miss-holiday/">Kinect Star Wars and inspired console bundle to miss holiday</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 24 Aug 2011 13:25:00 EST. 	<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/22/lucasarts-job-listing-hints-at-in-development-open-world-rpg/"><img alt="LucasArts hiring engineer for open world RPG" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/08/lucasartsjoblisting.jpg" style="border-width: 0px; border-style: solid; margin: 0px;" /></a></div>
Lucasfilm's recruiting website says the studio is <a href="https://www.lucasfilm.apply2jobs.com/ProfExt/index.cfm?fuseaction=mExternal.showJob&amp;RID=3575">hiring a developer for "an open-world RPG."</a> The mid-level gameplay designer position will work on code and engines for an upcoming (and presumably unannounced) role-playing game set to take place in an open-world environment. Other than that, the listing is unfortunately vague, asking only for a talented and experienced individual to work with artists and designers to put code together.<br />
<br />
There's no mention of online or multiplayer features at all, and no hint of what platforms (other than PC) the game might be built for or run on. It does seem like LucasArts is working on putting together some kind of RPG, possibly based on one of its current properties, in an open-world setting. That's intriguing news on its own.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/22/lucasarts-job-listing-hints-at-in-development-open-world-rpg/">LucasArts job listing hints at in-development 'open-world RPG'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 22 Aug 2011 23:30:00 EST. <br />
If you ever feel like taking a break from cutting through folks with laserswords, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/star-wars-the-old-republic"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em></a> will include a somewhat wackier game mode that should suit your needs. It's called "Huttball" -- a neutral Player vs. Player Warzone which is likely the closest thing the MMO will have to an official sport. Unless, of course, they invent ligthsaber baseball, which seems unlikely for several obvious reasons.<br />
<br />
The game tasks two teams with securing a neutral ball and running it into the opposing teams endzone. Just like football! Only with more Force-choking. Check out the trailer above to get a taste of <em>space sports</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/19/the-old-republic-gets-a-somewhat-lighthearted-huttball-warzone/">The Old Republic gets a somewhat lighthearted 'Huttball' Warzone</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 19 Aug 2011 17:00:00 EST. "Rancor Rampage" is joining the bite-sized quests for Jedihood and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/25/kinect-star-wars-preview-pod-racing-people/">Pod Racing glory</a> in <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/kinect-star-wars">Kinect Star Wars</a>. </em>From what we saw at Gamescom, the mode plays exactly how it sounds: Players embody the Rancor, trashing houses on Tatooine and eating Jawas. In an attempt to prevent its servers from collapsing under the weight of a million Force-hungry MMO-players, EA will artificially limit the number of copies -- both digital and retail -- of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/star-wars-the-old-republic"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em></a> available at launch. An EA representative <a href="http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2011/08/18/star-wars-the-old-republic-launch-copies-limited-for-retail-and-digital.aspx">reportedly revealed the strategy</a> at a Gamescom demo, but didn't divulge any details such as how many copies would be available, or how long it would take for more copies to be released once the quota is met.<br />
<br />
We suppose this strategy makes sense, though we can't help but imagine the excuses BioWare and EA are going to have to come up with to explain why their <em>downloads are sold out</em>. "Bits? You want bits? Sorry friend. We're fresh out of those. Bytes too! Sorry about that. The drought's hitting us awful hard. The ... the technodrought."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/18/star-wars-the-old-republic-launch-copies-artificially-limited-a/">Star Wars: The Old Republic supply artificially limited at launch</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 18 Aug 2011 18:30:00 EST. The latest trailer for BioWare and EA's wicked expensive MMO <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/star-wars-the-old-republic"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em></a> gives players a brief introduction to each of the game's eight classes before beckoning them to "Join the Fight." We'd be more than happy to, provided BioWare <em>finally</em> gives us a firm release date outside of "holiday 2011." <p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/25/star-wars-the-old-republic-trailer-asks-you-to-join-the-fight/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Star Wars: The Old Republic trailer asks you to Join the Fight</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/25/star-wars-the-old-republic-trailer-asks-you-to-join-the-fight/">Star Wars: The Old Republic trailer asks you to Join the Fight</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 25 Jul 2011 15:42:00 EST. The Limited Edition <em>Star Wars</em> Xbox 360 console, priced at <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/21/r2d2-style-xbox-360-kinect-bundle-rolling-out-for-star-wars-kine/">$449 in the States</a>, has been given a suggested retail price of &pound;349.99 in the UK (ouch, that's $570 US!). The standard 250GB Xbox 360 Kinect bundle retails at &pound;299.99.<br />
<br />
The rebellious console from a galaxy far, far away was revealed last week at San Diego Comic-Con. It includes a 320GB hard drive, a white Kinect, the R2-D2 inspired console, a C-3PO colored controller, <em>Kinect Star Wars </em>and<em> Kinect Adventures</em>. The console will also feature <em>Star Wars</em> sound effects for operations like powering up, ejecting discs, and setting coordinates for Dagobah. Xboxes can do that, right?<br />

At the Comic-Con panel for <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/kinect-star-wars"><em>Kinect Star Wars</em></a> earlier this week (the same panel where <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/21/r2d2-style-xbox-360-kinect-bundle-rolling-out-for-star-wars-kine/">that R2D2 Xbox</a> was announced), Microsoft's head of Kinect Jorg Neumann told the story of how the game itself came about. Back in 2008, when Kinect was still called Project Natal, and basically consisted of just a camera in a back room at Microsoft, Neumann and his colleagues found an engineer playing with game prototypes on the system, and one of those was a lightsaber simulator. That alone convinced Neumann and his division that Star Wars needed to be on the interface in some format.<br />
<br />
And it turns out LucasArts didn't need much convincing either. Lead producer Craig Derrick described flying out to the Microsoft campus to see the proposal for the game, and saying among his own colleagues that all they planned to do was hold out their hand and see what happened. As soon as they pushed a hand out to the Kinect unit, said Derrick, "it knocked over a bunch of droids, and we were like, 'OK, we're in.'"<br />
<br />
We saw <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/08/star-wars-kinect-preview-force-flail/">the game's Force-driven droid pushing</a> and lightsaber waving at E3, but Microsoft and LucasArts introduced a new mode to the game this week: pod racing. Anakin Skywalker's motorsport of choice is in the game as well, and I got to take a pod out for a spin later on in the week at a Microsoft preview event.<br />

After <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/01/wii-developer-red-fly-studios-lays-off-30/">laying off 30 developers</a>, Red Fly Studio CEO Dan Borth told GameSpot, "The reduction of staff was a response to a large high-profile project that was, to our surprise, reevaluated and then canceled." While the identity of that project wasn't known at the time, a resume uncovered by internet uncoverer <a href="http://twitter.com/#!/supererogatory/status/93412474090553344">Superannuation</a> points to development of a "next-gen Star Wars title."<br />
<br />
Patrick Doran's LinkedIn profile includes Red Fly Studio under "past" experiences, where the artist worked from April 2008 to this month, as both an artist and environment artist. In addition to work on games like <em>Mushroom Men</em>, <em>Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 2</em> for Wii, and <em>Thor</em> for both Wii and 3DS, Doran worked as an environment artist from January of this year through June on the aforementioned "next-gen Star Wars title."<br />
<br />
With a list of shipped games exclusive to Nintendo's consoles, it's not clear what "next-gen" means in this case. The studio's first HD game for Xbox 360 and/or PlayStation 3 using the high-profile Star Wars license? We've reached out to both Red Fly Studio and LucasArts for comment on the project.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/20/red-fly-studio-layoffs-result-of-canned-star-wars-title-resume/">Red Fly Studio layoffs result of canned Star Wars title, resume suggests</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 20 Jul 2011 10:55:00 EST. LucasArts has revealed a new retail collection that bundles together both of the <em>Monkey Island Special Edition</em> titles. The collection will include both<em> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/the-secret-of-monkey-island-special-edition">The Secret of Monkey Island Special Edition</a></em> and <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/monkey-island-2-special-edition-lechucks-revenge">Monkey Island 2 Special Edition: LeChuck's Revenge</a></em> and additional bonus content.<br />
<br />
The bonus content is set to feature concept art from the special editions, the re-recorded soundtrack for each game and concept art from a canceled <em>Monkey Island</em> movie that was to be produced by LucasArts' special effects house Industrial Light &amp; Magic.<br />
<br />
The collection will be released at European retail on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC September 9. A North American release has yet to be announced.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/11/monkey-island-special-editions-to-be-bundled-with-extra-content/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Monkey Island Special Editions to be bundled with extra content in Europe</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/11/monkey-island-special-editions-to-be-bundled-with-extra-content/">Monkey Island Special Editions to be bundled with extra content in Europe</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 11 Jul 2011 21:40:00 EST. Remember when you used to play Star Wars with your friends in the schoolyard, pretending to choke people with your mind? Well <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/kinect-star-wars"><em>Star Wars Kinect</em></a> doesn't quite allow for that (at least that we've seen), but it does allow for some bit of arm waving verisimilitude. We may have spoken too soon when we posted <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/06/star-wars-the-old-republic-e3-trailer-is-just-showing-off-now/">this morning's</a> decidedly un-cinematic <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/star-wars-the-old-republic"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em></a> trailer. BioWare has once again released what's sure to be one of E3's most striking promo videos: The MMORPG's opening cinematic, which you'll find posted after the jump.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/06/star-wars-the-old-republic-intro-cinematic-is-more-like-it/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Star Wars: The Old Republic intro cinematic is more like it</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/06/star-wars-the-old-republic-intro-cinematic-is-more-like-it/">Star Wars: The Old Republic intro cinematic is more like it</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 06 Jun 2011 19:25:00 EST. Though past E3-timed trailers for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/star-wars-the-old-republic"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em></a> overwhelmed us with gorgeous cinematics, this year's video instead attempts to drown us in a comprehensive features list. Check out the somewhat braggadocious trailer after the jump! Unless, of course, you don't like <em>space fights</em>.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/06/star-wars-the-old-republic-e3-trailer-is-just-showing-off-now/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Star Wars: The Old Republic E3 trailer is just showing off now</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/06/star-wars-the-old-republic-e3-trailer-is-just-showing-off-now/">Star Wars: The Old Republic E3 trailer is just showing off now</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 06 Jun 2011 12:40:00 EST. Don't you want a Kinect game in which you use your hands to do that Jedi mind trick thing? Well ... we don't know if that's in <em>Kinect Star Wars</em>. But at least we know some of the other <em>Star Warsy</em> things you do with hand motion thanks to <a href="http://popwatch.ew.com/2011/06/05/star-wars-at-e3-your-first-look-at-kinect-star-wars-exclusive/">Entertainment Weekly</a>, who just took the wraps off of the new Xbox 360 game (which was first announced during <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/06/13/kinect-star-wars-game-features-controller-free-lightsaber-fighti/">E3 last year</a>).<br />
<br />
In several different gameplay modes, up to two players use gestures to lift objects with the Force, swing a lightsaber, drive a podracer, fly an X-Wing, and, according to the video on EW, defend themselves against the lasers that are flying out of the TV. The game also includes some unspecified "voice component," which we're going to pretend is an expansive C-3P0 minigame about saying "Oh my!" to things.<br />
<br />
In addition to these experiences, there's a "Jedi Destiny" mode, being shown at E3, which sounds more story-driven. You play one of a selection of new characters made for the game, through sequences set in movie environments from both trilogies.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/05/kinect-star-wars-details-forced-out-into-the-open/">'Kinect Star Wars' details Forced out into the open</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 05 Jun 2011 21:45:00 EST. Okay, you like Tim Schafer. Sure, who doesn't? But are you ready to really get inside the mastermind of <em>Grim Fandango</em>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/psychonauts"><em>Psychonauts</em></a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/brutal-legend"><em>Brutal Legend</em></a>? And we mean <em>deep</em> inside ... like, "cut him open with a lightsaber and sleep inside him tauntaun style" deep. If so, you'll want to watch "Tim Schafer's History of Videogames Adventure," a charming Gamespot documentary about the developer's life presented as an adventure game of sorts.<br />
<br />
Did you know, for instance, that Lucasarts staffers were permitted to select Star Wars concept art to hang on their office walls? The video's full of all sorts of gems like that, and if you can get past how visibly uncomfortable Schafer is with talking about himself for this long, it's well worth watching.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/18/learn-more-about-tim-schafer-than-you-ever-wanted-to/">Learn more about Tim Schafer than you ever wanted to</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 18 May 2011 14:30:00 EST. LucasArts has entered into a multi-year licensing agreement with Epic Games to develop with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/unreal-engine-3/">Unreal Engine 3</a>, the studios announced today. The deal will encompass "multiple projects" and looks to provide a shortcut for LucasArts "between inspiration and execution on a wide variety of gaming platforms," according to Zak Phelps, the company's director of technology.<br />
<br />
Epic VP Mark Rein echoed that sentiment when he trumpeted "Unreal Engine 3's ability to scale across platforms, from mobile, through PC and console all the way up to the next generation of games." Epic's recent <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/08/unreal-engine-3-tech-demo-video/">tech demo</a> of the latest UE3 updates certainly <em>looked</em> incredible, but we didn't notice any new features promising to render a deeper <em>Star Wars</em> experience. Then again, we'd probably pay a buck just to see the Force unleashed on our iPhone, inspired or <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/26/star-wars-the-force-unleashed-2-review/">not</a>.<br />
<br />
Previously, LucasArts licensed Unreal Engine 2 for 2005's <em>Star Wars: Republic Commando </em>(pictured).<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/26/lucasarts-licenses-unreal-engine-3-for-long-term-multi-project/">LucasArts licenses Unreal Engine 3 for long-term, multi-project use</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 26 Apr 2011 18:43:00 EST. Jedi Knights don't just <em>become</em> Jedi Knights, you know -- if that were the case, <em>The Empire Strikes Back</em> would be way, way shorter. It takes tons of training for a Jedi (and every other class in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/star-wars-the-old-republic"><em>The Old Republic</em></a>, for that matter) to hone their abilities to a lightsaber-sharp point. Luckily for the MMO's potential players, BioWare has revealed a ton of information on how this progression will play out in-game.<br />
<br />
Check out the latest post on the <a href="http://www.swtor.com/news/blog/20110408">game's official blog</a> for a quick rundown on class progression in <em>The Old Republic</em>, covering everything from advanced classes to skill trees. So, so many skill trees. No kidding, you guys. Like, a tropical rainforest of skill trees.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/10/bioware-reveals-more-info-on-the-old-republic-class-progression/">BioWare reveals more info on The Old Republic class progression</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 10 Apr 2011 17:00:00 EST. <a href="http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/33881/LucasArts_Hires_Tomb_Raider_Franchise_Director_For_Unannounced_Game.php">Gamasutra</a> reports that LucasArts has hired Tim Longo, formerly Tomb Raider creative and franchise director at Crystal Dynamics. Longo worked with LucasArts in the past on several <em>Star Wars</em> titles, notably the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Wars:_Starfighter"><em>Starfighter</em></a> series, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/01/welcome-to-the-internet-graveyard/">Jar Jar's Revenge</a></em> and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Wars_Republic_Commando"><em>Republic Commando</em></a>. Longo has signed on in order to work on an unannounced project for LucasArts though, given his pedigree (not to mention LucasArts' corporate mandate) a new <i>Star Wars</i> title seems likely.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/01/lucasarts-rehires-tomb-raider-franchise-head-tim-longo/">LucasArts hires back Tomb Raider franchise head Tim Longo</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 01 Apr 2011 20:10:00 EST. Though proficient in laser-bladed weapons and space magic, Jedi Knights typically share one profound weakness: A lack of fashionableness. That's not the case in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/star-wars-the-old-republic">The Old Republic</a> -- check out the trailer after the jump to see how the Jedi's armor progresses as they move up the level ladder.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/27/star-wars-the-old-republic-trailer-shows-the-evolution-of-a-jed/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Star Wars: The Old Republic trailer shows the evolution of a Jedi</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/27/star-wars-the-old-republic-trailer-shows-the-evolution-of-a-jed/">Star Wars: The Old Republic trailer shows the evolution of a Jedi</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 27 Mar 2011 15:00:00 EST. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/17/ea-1-5-million-the-old-republic-beta-tester-applicants-cant-be/"><img border="1" hspace="4" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/03/30helensagree530px.jpg" vspace="4" /></a></div>
EA is using the Helen logic with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/star-wars-the-old-republic"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em></a>, it seems. If <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BDTZcj8Xink">30 Helens agree on something</a>, it has to be truth, right?<br />
<br />
While talking during a Lazard Capital Markets Technology &amp; Media Day presentation (via <a href="http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/33422/EA_Nearly_15M_Have_Registered_Interest_In_The_Old_Republic_Beta.php">Gamasutra</a>), EA CFO Eric Brown revealed that near 1.5 million have signed up to beta test <em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em>, apparently confirming there is significant interest in the title. Hey, maybe these guys and gals just like being included in beta testing? Ever think of that, Mr. Brown?<br />
<br />
"It's a great indicator in the interest level in the franchise," Brown said. EA's goal is apparently to grab not only diehard MMO players, but also to expand to a much more broad audience -- and <em>Star Wars</em> fans, of course, though we're sure just having "<em>Star Wars</em>" on the box will do that. "For us it's about creating the right experience for expanding from tier 1 and the tier 2 users to getting people who have never played an MMO before, but are interested in <em>Star Wars</em>, to engage and give it a try," Brown added.<br />
<br />
Brown hopes that <em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em> can gain a user base exceeding 12 million, which he estimates is the current number of MMO players out there -- half of whom are in <a href="http://wow.joystiq.com"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a>. "If we do that, our addressable market is well beyond 12 million people ... into more of a general gamer population, pretty much anyone that has a minimum spec personal computer." Now to get 1.5 million people to agree on what the "minimum spec" is for a PC, we guess.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/17/ea-1-5-million-the-old-republic-beta-tester-applicants-cant-be/">EA: 1.5 million The Old Republic beta tester applicants can't be wrong</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 17 Mar 2011 08:00:00 EST. Traveller's Tales has managed to infuse its LEGO action games with some great humor over the years, and the trend looks to continue with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/lego-star-wars-3-the-clone-wars"><em>LEGO Star Wars 3: The Clone Wars</em></a>. The first promo spots for the game hit tomorrow, but you can get an early look at one trooper's supremely bad luck tonight.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/11/lego-star-wars-3-commercial-puts-the-oops-in-clone-troops/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>LEGO Star Wars 3 commercial puts the 'oops' in 'clone troops'</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/11/lego-star-wars-3-commercial-puts-the-oops-in-clone-troops/">LEGO Star Wars 3 commercial puts the 'oops' in 'clone troops'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 11 Mar 2011 23:59:00 EST. Like shady peddlers of exotic, habit-forming narcotics, the Xbox Live Marketplace and PlayStation Store are offering users a free taste of two products before they launch at retail. Fans of gigantic RPGs, honorable knights and ancient dragons should turn their eyes towards the demo for -- what else? -- <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/dragon-age-2">Dragon Age 2</a></em>. Fans of gigantic AT-ATs, Jedi Knights and ancient Qui-Gons would be better suited for the <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/lego-star-wars-3-the-clone-wars">Lego Star Wars 3: The Clone Wars</a></em> demo. (Note: Qui-Gon Jinn probably isn't in this game. We just needed the symmetry.)<br />
<br />
The demos are available now on XBLM, and will arrive on the PlayStation Store later today, following the weekly PSN update. The demo for <em>Dragon Age 2</em> will also make its way to PC sometime today -- we'll let you know when it shows up.<br type="_moz" /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/22/psa-dragon-age-2-lego-star-wars-3-demos-available-today/">PSA: Dragon Age 2, Lego Star Wars 3 demos available today</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 22 Feb 2011 10:45:00 EST. Markus brings with him a long career of credits -- in more than 35 games -- from a variety of positions and publishers, including most recently director of game design at Disney Interactive. He's also served as director of pre-production at Ubisoft and consulted on game design and pre-production for Atari, Microsoft and Rockstar, among others.<br />
<br />
Markus leaves Disney in the midst of its <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/24/disney-interactive-layoffs/">restructuring</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/11/12/disney-interactive-fiscal-year-2010-earnings/">away from</a> console development, and he joins LucasArts following a difficult end of 2010 for the studio. Clint Hocking's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/06/ex-ubisoft-creative-director-clint-hocking-joining-lucasarts/">arrival</a> at LucasArts last fall brought a new hope in the wake of Haden Blackman's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/07/29/today-will-be-a-day-long-remembered-haden-blackman-resigns-from/">resignation</a>, but <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/01/lucasarts-confirms-latest-round-of-layoffs/">two</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/11/16/lucasarts-confirms-recent-layoffs-restates-commitment-to-intern/">rounds</a> of layoffs closed out the year with an "<a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0080684/">Episode V</a>" type of feel.<br />
<br />
Prior to Markus' appointment, former <em>BioShock</em> senior designer Joe McDonagh held the creative director position at LucasArts. In December, McDonagh <a href="http://www.insidesocialgames.com/2010/12/16/new-hires-in-social-gaming-digital-chocolate-kabam-meteor-games-playfish-playdom-popcap-rockyou-teepee-games-wooga-zynga/">joined</a> PopCap as the company's new director of production.<br />
