If you thought Manhunt 2 had reached the pinnacle of mature content in video games, you better guess again. The controversy-garnering title will be re-released on Direct2Drive next week for $29.99 -- only this time around, it's packing an AO rating. As those who lived through Mahuntgate surely remember, that was planned to be the original rating for the game, before the ESRB rolled up, and was all like "what? You want to stick shards of glass into another man's ear? No. No, sir."

Rockstar has remained mum about what the new rating will entail, but our guess is that it will incorporate more graphic forms of violence, and perhaps a few extra dirty words. We've contacted Rockstar to get more specific details on the mature-r content, and to find out when we can expect the Early Childhood version of the game to hit store shelves.
They've waited very quietly, very still, until everyone in the UK forgot that it was there, and then they JUMPED OUT AND ANNOUNCED A RELEASE DATE! "BOO! Manhunt 2 is coming out on October 31!"

This version of Manhunt 2 is different from the one the US got, having been "heavily reworked" (as IGN describes it) in a desperate bid for BBFC approval. Remember all the controversy over Manhunt 2? Now it might be time to see what all the fuss was about, as Amazon has it marked down to $19.99 (for today only). Most people who've played the game would probably agree that it's not worth a purchase at full price, but at half its cost you might be a little bit tempted -- if you're a crazy homicidal murderer, that is, or wish to become one. After all, those are the only kind of people who play Manhunt 2, right?

Also, we think it's a bit of a strange choice for Amazon to offer as a deal. We wonder if they'll be getting an angry letter from Jack Thompson any time soon.

Murder training for cheap at Amazon originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 15 May 2008 16:00:00 EST. While we don't know much about her, what with us living across the pond and all, she does come off as kind of grounded and level-headed about all of this.

It seems that she's very much for adult content in games, just that the adult content in question should only be accessible by, you know, adults. "There's a huge moral debate around content in videogames," she says, "I'm very clear, that wasn't the remit of my review to pass judgment on that and I do believe that content for adults is content for adults. It should be rated that way."

She goes on further to add: "I can understand that gamers fear that there will be a 'you can't play these games anymore.' I've not said that, I'd never say that, and certainly if I heard people beginning to use my review to try and imply that I will be very quick to say that that was not and will not be a recommendation of mine."

While we're not resident of the UK, we're incredibly interested in where this is all going. Ratings improvements can be made worldwide, we're sure, and we'd like to see a world where it doesn't take an incredibly-long time to release a game because a bunch of uninformed people are too busy arguing about how it's going to train your kid to kill.
Dr. Tanya Byron explains her report findings, stance on games originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 28 Mar 2008 13:30:00 EST. Her verdict? The BBFC should have a bigger role in rating games (right now, they only intervene on games flagged with violent, sexual and criminal content).

Her solution involves a new 12+ classification, as well as the BBFC handling just about all duties involving rating games. But, as anticipated, she's also endorsed the PEGI system, as well. She hopes that the PEGI ratings can go on the back of the game's box, with the BBFC classification being displayed on the front.

This is all just the tip of the iceberg, however. Her report has lots more interesting information, so for the rest, head on over to Game Politics.

[Via Joystiq]
Byron calls for more BBFC action, ratings system overhaul originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 27 Mar 2008 12:00:00 EST. You'd be wrong though, as Kent Online reports that Kent MP Julian Brazier is working to introduce a "public appeals process" to overturn BBFC decisions, like the one that paved the way for Manhunt 2's release.

Brazier's Private Members Bill to reform the BBFC was discussed and eventually stopped in Parliament late last month, but that hasn't stopped Brazier from trying to revive its political chances. Brazier insists that the eventual decision to release Manhunt 2 "shows once again that the BBFC and its appeals system do not meet the concerns of the public" and that "the public wants a significant tightening up in this vital area." Earlier this month, Brazier accompanied Gordon Brown in a meeting with Giselle Pakeerah, a mother who believes the original Manhunt contributed to her son's murder.
British MP continues fight against Manhunt 2 originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 20 Mar 2008 22:00:00 EST. Many folks think the ratings board should discontinue its work with video games, as they voice concerns over the decision to allow Manhunt 2 to be sold in the country. They feel the games classification process in the UK has some major issues. Many are even expecting the report of Dr. Tanya Byron, one of the country's most popular psychologists, to support a different ratings institution when she releases it later this month.

Darren Waters, editor of BBC News' technology index, rips apart the BBFC, stating "The grudging nature of the BBFC's statement, that it now has "no alternative" but to grant the title a certificate, coupled with the fact the body went to the High Court, twice rejected the game itself and tried to overturn the original judgment of the VAC leaves the organization with its credibility bruised."

Others have come through to voice their concerns, as well. General consensus seems to be that the new classification system will fall squarely on the shoulders of PEGI (Pan European Game Information), another games classification system that is completely voluntary on the part of the game developers.

[Via Go Nintendo]
Many call for BBFC to step aside from games following Manhunt 2 ordeal originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 20 Mar 2008 13:30:00 EST. Well, for those of you in the UK who wanted to enjoy the <strike>murder sim</strike> latest game from Rockstar, your time will come. Even with all of the fuss about the game going down in the UK, the BBFC's decision to ban the game in the country has somehow been overturned by the VAC (Video Appeals Committee), who have decided to affix an age 18 certificate to the title (meaning you have to be that old to purchase it).

Although we've really heard nothing but bad things about Manhunt 2, surely some of you in the UK are happy to hear about this new state of affairs involving the game? Not like it matters, because thanks to the Freeloader, you could have just imported the game from North America.

[Thanks, Jon!]
The Manhunt is back on in the UK originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 14 Mar 2008 14:15:00 EST. After a tumultuous history of appeals, appeals, and more appeals, the British High Court has finally lifted the ban on Rockstar's controversial title Manhunt 2. The PS2 and Nintendo Wii versions of the game have been cleared for release in the UK, and will carry an "18" rating.

The Video Appeals Committee has stood its ground regarding the release of the censored version of Manhunt 2, stating that it depicts no greater violence than any other release in Britain bearing an 18 certificate. The British Board of Film Classifications has finally seen the light, so it seems, and recognizes that the title will indeed land on shelves without further interruption.

No word yet on when Manhunt 2 will finally be released in the UK, or if anyone still cares about last year's controversial game.
Manhunt 2 UK ban officially lifted originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 14 Mar 2008 10:40:00 EST. The BBFC is now challenging the verdict by applying for a judicial review of the Video Appeals Committee's decision. The BBFC is adamant about its course of action, stating, "The VAC judgment, if allowed to stand, would have fundamental implications with regard to all the Board's decisions, including those turning upon questions of unacceptable levels of violence." Won't someone think of the children?

The BBFC is also trying to have the VAC's decision suspended, so that the Board doesn't have to rate the game until after the judicial review.

While it seems no one cares about playing Manhunt 2 anymore, the final outcome is certain to have repercussions for rating games (in the UK, at least) in the future.

[Via press release]
And the Manhunt 2 saga continues originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 17 Dec 2007 16:00:00 EST. The British Board of Film Classification is drawing a line in the sand when it comes to Manhunt 2. The BBFC is going to the next level and seeking judicial review after the Video Appeals Committee overturned the BBFC's decision to reject giving Manhunt 2 a classification -- essentially creating a de facto ban.

The BBFC believes that overturning their original decision, which was essentially not to make a rating decision on Manhunt 2, will have "fundamental implications with regard to all the Board's decisions." According to the BBFC statement, the Video Appeals Committee decision undermines its power to judge "unacceptable levels of violence." Manhunt 2 now waits in limbo again as the BBFC attempts to overturn the VAC's decision.
BBFC seeks to keep Manhunt 2 banned originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 17 Dec 2007 11:00:00 EST. Well, things seem to be finally going Rockstar's way, for once, as the Video Appeals Committee ruled in favor of the publisher by four votes to three.

So, does this mean that this whole fiasco is over and Manhunt 2 will finally get its 18 rating? Not exactly. The BBFC can still take the case to the High Court in order to try to keep the ban on the game.

Whether you care about Manhunt 2 or not, we've already seen how the decision to ban the title in the UK has affected other games. At least this appeal is a step in the right direction regarding video game censorship.
Rockstar fights Manhunt 2 ban in UK, wins (for now) originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 10 Dec 2007 16:00:00 EST. With all of the appeal going on right now, the BBFC has admitted that there isn't any definitive evidence linking violence and video games together. In accepting that there isn't enough out there to prove a link between the two, they have said that they believe more research is needed to determine if the possibility between the two being related exists. So, it isn't a final determination, by any means.

At yesterday's appeal hearing, BBFC spokesperson Andrew Caldecott stated "The board's position is that there is insufficient evidence to prove, as a fact, there is a causal connection between violent games and behavioural harm." Caldecott goes on further to say "It's a perfectly fair point, and one which we accept, but it's not by any means a complete answer to the question the [Video Appeals Committee] has to decide."

Caldecott further explains that the lack of a definitive link isn't enough to rule out the possibility of one, saying "The research certainly achieves the objective of establishing that research does not demonstrate that there is a causal link. But what it certainly does not establish is that there isn't." No matter how you look at, this is definitely an argument that isn't going to go away for quite some time.
BBFC: No definitive connection between games and violence originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 27 Nov 2007 17:00:00 EST. GamesIndustry.biz is on-hand to provide the blow-by-blow for us, with Geoffrey Robertson representing Rockstar. Robertson thinks the BBFC is "simply ignorant of the gaming experience." Robertson went on to say that "There's no evidence that playing interactive videogames leads to a propensity to act them out in real life. We wonder why Manhunt 2 has been singled out for special treatment."

The rest of today's proceedings went as one would imagine, with Rockstar pleading their case and the BBFC intently paying attention. We'll bring you more as the story develops.

[Via Joystiq]
Rockstar begins their British appeal originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 26 Nov 2007 19:00:00 EST. Official proceedings began today for Rockstar's appeal to the British Board of Film Classification, regarding their refusal to rate the Wii version of Manhunt 2, effectively barring the game from release in the UK. GamesIndustry.biz provides coverage of the appeal. Geoffrey Robertson, representing Rockstar Games, opened the proceedings with his statement, claiming that the BBFC are "ignorant of the gaming experience," and might as well be called "the British Board of Videogame Censors."

Robertston further accused the Video Appeals Committee of having never even played video games, to which one panel member reportedly responded that some of them actually had (to which we say: only some of them?). Robertson argued that the BBFC is more concerned with their own image than anything else.

Rockstar has clearly come out with fists flying for the appeal. It remains to be seen if the aggressive strategy will prove effective in allowing the lackluster Manhunt 2 to find its way to British Wii's.

Rockstar's British appeal begins for Manhunt 2 originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 26 Nov 2007 12:30:00 EST. Some high-profile U.S. Senators, including Hillary Clinton (D-NY) and Joe Lieberman (ID-CT), have made attacking the ESRB their new pet project. The cause of this controversy is, of course, Manhunt 2. You may recall that Rockstar was forced to revise the game in order to remove the "Adults Only" rating given to it by the ESRB. These tactics may have worked in the U.S., but the British Board of Film Classification was unimpressed and still refused to issue a rating for the title.

The Senators are pretty ticked off at the ESRB for not being as censor vicious as the BBFC. But the ramifications of the Senators' attack on the ESRB go deeper than Manhunt 2, and may affect the video game industry in general if the ESRB is put under the "thorough review" that they are demanding.

Even worse, the Senators are calling for more extreme ratings on the Wii, due to the console's motion-sensitive controller. They argue that the Wiimote "permits children to act out each of the many graphic torture scenes and murders."

Of course, they don't acknowledge the fact that children shouldn't be playing Manhunt 2 at all, since the game was given a "Mature" rating by the ESRB, and one of the few ways they can even play the game is with parental permission. If children playing mature games is really their concern, perhaps the Senators should be putting parents under review, and not the ESRB. Those old enough to play violent games can differentiate between using waggle and using real weapons, making separate Wii ratings unnecessary.

At times like these, we really yearn for Stephen Colbert to make a political comeback.
When Senators attack: Politicians target ESRB and Wii originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 21 Nov 2007 12:45:00 EST. When 1UP group mastermind John Davison and executive vice president of the Game Group, Ira Becker, bailed out of Ziff Davis Media in August, it was with the intention of starting up a new family entertainment website geared towards parents. "What They Play" is now accessible via the magnificent power of the internets and, as the succinct name suggests, aims to inform parents what interactive filth their kids are currently rolling their brains in. With an online video game glossary (or "videogame," as they seemingly prefer) and explanation of the ESRB rating system, the site aims to demystify some of the game industry's intricacies and back-of-the-box descriptors to an audience less versed in our M-rated 60fps FPS world.

Most helpful is an objective analysis of a given game's activities, violent content and colorful language, presented in a concise and straightforward manner. You won't find reviews here, only a desire to better equip parents for deciding whether their kids should be playing Zack & Wiki or Manhunt 2.

(Bad example, nobody in their mind should play Manhunt 2.)

[Thanks, Jared]
'What They Play' keeps parents in the loop originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 12 Nov 2007 17:55:00 EST. It's a little late for Halloween, but you can always pick up this promotional Manhunt 2 costume on eBay for next year. What's a better costume than "doctor who got some blood on him, and also a video game logo for some reason?" Nothing, that's what. Of course, you can only do that if society doesn't collapse due to the "easily accessible" uncensored violent content in Manhunt 2 turning every child in America into a thoughtless murderer. You'd better hope that all children don't turn into bloodthirsty maniacs, for the sake of Halloween parties.

Wow, that's the second time this week that looking at Manhunt stuff turned our thoughts to the end of society. Maybe there is something to all the protesting.

[Via GameSniped]
More Manhunt 2 promo stuff hits eBay originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 10 Nov 2007 12:00:00 EST. This bundle of Manhunt 2 promo stuff is the perfect gift for the Manhunt 2 fan in your life. Alternatively, it's a reminder that the game existed, in case, say, we enter a 1984-type scenario in which an oppressive government attempts to write the game out of history. Of course, then, having this stuff would probably just get you shot. Then, it's the perfect gift for the person you'd like to be shot by a hypothetical evil government.

The set contains: a T-shirt, a DVD, two fake hospital identification bracelets, a Wiimote strap, a fake hospital memo, a poster, a ubiquitous Rockstar sticker, and a flimsy connection to gaming controversy that we'll take as an invitation to link to this Night Trap video again.

Also found in today's GameSniped update: a Miyamoto-autographed Mario 64 cartridge, and a weird NES repair center thing.

[Via GameSniped]
Collect some evidence of Manhunt 2 before the game disappears originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 07 Nov 2007 19:00:00 EST. Rumors have been circulating for a while that Target, prompted by the discovery of Manhunt 2's hidden dirty, dirty filthy content on the PSP version of the game, had pulled the title from its shelves. Now, GameSpot has received the official word that, indeed, those hunting (get it?) for a hyper-violent, hyper-mediocre action-stealth game will have to look for a store without red ring decor.

Is this maybe, just maybe, more a move to avoid a media firestorm than an actual concern about keeping young'ns from buying objectionable material at Target? ... We have no idea why you'd think that.
Target rids its shelves of Manhunt 2 originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 07 Nov 2007 10:59:00 EST. This has yet to be confirmed, but some Target insiders are claiming that the retailer will not be selling copies of Manhunt 2, the controversial Rockstar game. The rumor was started by a Target employee at the Evil Avatar forums, and was later supported at GoNintendo by an electronics specialist at the retail chain.

Adding further basis to the rumor, Target's website states that the PSP version of Manhunt 2 is not available in stores, although it can be purchased online. The PS2 and Wii versions are not even listed on the site.

If this rumor turns out to be true, it won't be good news for Rockstar, especially if other retailers follow suit. As of now, though, these rumblings apply to Target stores only.
Rumor: Manhunt 2 being pulled from Target stores originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 04 Nov 2007 20:00:00 EST. OK, we're just going to come out and say we're getting a whole seven-year itch from all this Manhunt 2 controversy and coverage. We're bored by it. It's a mediocre game and in no way brings the concept of a thrill kill to the Wii. Back in the day when the whole AO rating affair was going on it was sexy, with issues about retail sales keeping things interesting. Now, it just feels like we're being subjected to lame talking heads trying to grab the microphone.

The ESRB recently held an investigation regarding Manhunt 2 and the hack that makes the censored material available -- we've placed the corresponding release and Q&A after the break. ESRB president Patricia Vance makes it clear that unauthorized hacking of the code does not constitute a need to reissue the rating, and that parents should be vigilant of what their kids are downloading from the internet in order to modify or remove "controls the industry has so diligently put in place for their own protection."

Vance better watch her back, parents don't like being told to do their job -- that's how wars with Canada get started.
Continue reading ESRB issues statement about Manhunt 2 hacks and controversy

ESRB issues statement about Manhunt 2 hacks and controversy originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 02 Nov 2007 17:58:00 EST. While we have yet to give the former a try, we've been all over the latter thanks to Nintendo. The game is, seriously, very good. You don't need our review to know that (it's coming as soon as possible!). So, if we had to suggest one game to pick up this week, it would definitely be that.

Of course, who are we to say what you should play? Have something else in mind? Please, do share.

Update: Oh, and let's not forget Guitar Hero III. Guess it's a triple does week. Damn this holiday season and its tons of releases.
WRUP: Double dose edition [update] originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 02 Nov 2007 16:00:00 EST. Turns out, Rockstar omitted the entire team of over 50 folks who worked hard on the game from its end credits.

And now, ex-producer Jurie Horneman is fuming. He has a plan to fix the situation, however, and "intends to correct an inaccuracy in the game's credits, namely the over 55 missing Rockstar Vienna employees who worked on the game from January 2004 until the studio was closed down on May 11th 2006." He further documents his disdain for Rockstar by adding "I am disappointed and outraged that Rockstar Games tries to pretend that Rockstar Vienna and the work we did on Manhunt 2 never happened - the work of over 50 people, who put years of their lives into the project, trying to make the best game they could. Oops, looks like some people didn't get credit where credit was deserved in the sweeping epic of <strike>love, lust, loss, betrayal and</strike> murder known as Manhunt 2. Former producer Jurie Horneman writes on his blog that the names of 55 people, who worked on the game at Rockstar Vienna before it was closed in May of 2006, are missing from the game's credits. He lists the names as best he can remember, with the exception of one person who did not wish to be named.

Horneman says, "I am disappointed and outraged that Rockstar Games tries to pretend that Rockstar Vienna and the work we did on Manhunt 2 never happened - the work of over 50 people, who put years of their lives into the project, trying to make the best game they could. I am proud to have been a part of that team." Development teams switch up all the time -- it's a wonder we don't hear about stuff like this more often.

[Via Develop]
Manhunt 2 credits neglect Vienna team originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 02 Nov 2007 12:29:00 EST. Get ready for another year or so of shrill news reports, protests, boycotts, "experts," and, of course, Jack. Time to start defending your medium or ignoring everybody!

What's going to set off this new round of controversy? Just about a day after release, hackers have figured out how to unlock the censored material in the PS2 and PSP versions of Manhunt 2. The original kill sequences, rather than being removed from the game's code, were left on the disc. If the code's on the other versions of the disc, it's on the Wii version as well. That means that a tiny, tiny portion of this game's audience will have access to adults-only content!

Will Rockstar ever learn? Or have they learned? This controversy may get the game re-rated and re-edited, but copies will fly off the shelves in the meantime. Check after the break for a video comparison of Manhunt with both censored and uncensored Manhunt 2 content. Adults Only and all that, of course!

Hot Coffee-hunt 2 originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 01 Nov 2007 16:45:00 EST. We're totally enjoying CBS' coverage of Manhunt 2. After Katie Couric's eye-roll inducing Notebook entry two days ago, the odiously designed CBS.com site bubbles up a clip of Dr. Phil with Early Show host Harry Smith and journalist Scott Steinberg. We're sorry, but just try not to laugh as Smith introduces Dr. Phil to the show and Steinberg starts flailing the Wiimote trying to execute the guy on screen. Of course, you'll have to go to CBS.com to watch it. We're sorry, but the networks haven't discovered the basics of embeddable code.

Dr. Phil is far more careful here then the last time he talked about video game violence's effect on children during the Virginia Tech massacre -- probably because his hypothesis was dead wrong last time and he looked like a total (insult of choice goes here). Dr. Phil says about Manhunt 2, "Now the truth is, if somebody plays this game and then they go and do this in their life, there was something seriously wrong with them before they got the game. But it's modeling."

The original Manhunt can be just as gory at times as the uncut version Manhunt 2

Wanna play Manhunt 2 the ways it's supposed to be played? Simple, just delete the "replace original file" scripts in the game code. A group of hackers allege to have done just that, altering the PSP game file and 'unlocking' the otherwise filtered gore. It's not quite on the scale of Hot Coffee -- remember kids, explicit sex is much worse than gratuitous violence -- but this latest scandal (call it "Hot Pliers") could become just as overblown, despite the hack being currently limited to the portable version of Manhunt and requiring a homebrew-enabled PSP, along with some basic ISO manipulation. Quick! Why? Well, because the vicious acts of murder that are portrayed within aren't carried out in the usual manner, as a player presses buttons on a controller (you do press buttons in Manhunt 2 for the Wii, by the way), but by "wielding a knife, an axe, and a glass shard" to dispatch their opponent. We haven't seen the box for this thing yet, but it would have to be pretty big to include all of these things.

But, what really gets us is the mainstream media's assumption that kids just walk into stores every day and purchase games that are rated "Mature." Even if this happens, and the kid takes said game home and plays it, what about the parents? Are they so absent-minded and uninterested in their child's life that they won't hear the curse words coming from their TV or hear the sounds of these murders (gurgling and the like, we imagine), let alone spend a few seconds to ask what they're playing or, dare we ask, watch their kid play it?

You know, we can understand your stance against violent media in general (well, maybe not everyone's), but the detachment is there. You're holding a white Wiimote and nunchuk, it's not like you could honestly think that you're some crazy psycho killer out there performing murder with no repercussions for your actions. If the game came with a life-sized dummy that you had to choke from behind with the cord connecting nunchuk and Wiimote together for points, then we might be willing to entertain the mainstream media's concerns.

It all comes down to the parents.

[Via Joystiq]
CBS tosses their hat into the Manhunt 2 debate originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 30 Oct 2007 22:55:00 EST. OK, so it's not a big surprise that Manhunt 2 looks to be falling pretty flat with the gaming community. But remember, there's still all that expectation of controversy that the mainstream media has been gearing up for! This evening, both ABC and CBS news had segments on Manhunt 2. We seem to have missed the CBS one, but we did catch the ABC segment. We'd love to share the package with you, but the networks are quite behind the times and we can't seem to find the segments anywhere on their sites yet (and we're even less sure to find embeddable code). If it finds its way to YouTube, we'll be sure to post it. (Update: Still no code, but here's CBS' segment.)

ABC.com's news section actually does have a quick rundown of video game ratings and terminology on their site for the utterly uninitiated. CBS took a different approach, however, as CBS.com features Katie Couric's Notebook. "What sets this video game apart is that the player can become physically involved in the acts of violence," Couric says. "Rather than just pushing buttons, the player actually wields a knife, an ax, a glass shard -- to stab an opponent."

Ummm, no. Don't know who writes the copy over there at that ratings powerhouse, but that's just plain wrong. Although the PS2 version would be about pushing buttons -- unless CBS has discovered some new feature -- we're currently unaware of the Wiimote's ability to shape-shift into any of those items described allowing a player to "stab an opponent." Couric then says that research shows violent games cause children to accept violence as an every day part of life. Ironically, a kid with average intelligence should be able to figure that out by watching the first segment of Katie's news broadcast every weekday evening.
Mainstream TV news covers Manhunt 2 originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 30 Oct 2007 20:13:00 EST. Those of you with a taste for the violent and gruesome have likely already given Manhunt 2 a lengthy play session or two, perhaps even gone so far as to finish the game. Well, some of the critics have, as well, and what they've come away from the experience with is nothing but a bad taste in their mouth, apparently. Most have found the game competent, at best, while others have found the game to be average or less.

Let's see what the critics said, before we get into what you think, shall we?

IGN (77/100) says it isn't as good as the first game: "The AI doesn't feel as good as the first game, the setting and environments don't feel as menacing, and the story is definitely weaker. That isn't to say that Manhunt 2 isn't a good game, because it is - Danny and Leo's adventure is enjoyable, especially if you've played the first title and have been waiting to eliminate enemies with plastic bags, crowbars or other household items. But as a whole, Manhunt 2 isn't the tour de force title that will grab your attention and keep you there like the first one did."

Games Radar (70/100) thinks it's just a dumbed-down stealth game: "It's hardly the pinnacle of stealth games - the enemies are dumb, and there's not much to do aside from sneaking and killing - but if you're in the mood for something creepy and horrific that'll leave you feeling a little dirty, Manhunt 2's still-shocking murders and eerie, is-it-real-or-am-I-just-insane storyline won't disappoint."

GameSpy (50/100) is of the mind that the game could've been something much better: "It's difficult to recommend Manhunt 2 in its current M-rated form to anyone. This material isn't just inappropriate for children, it's not appropriate for most of the people you know. The background material behind the storyline is well developed enough, and those with considerable tolerance for over-the-top gore and violence may derive some pleasure from it. But the game's execution as a bland third-person stealth adventure with sub-par combat and annoyingly stylized death sequences hamstrings what could have been a sleeper hit for mature audiences. It's hard to completely blame Rockstar for all the failings of Manhunt 2, considering the ESRB's hand in crippling the developer's vision."

1UP (40/100) trashes it: "Really, the game warrants a 4 because it's technically playable and, despite its best efforts, probably won't plunge the industry into a period of navel-gazing and political sanction. The horror, HORROR; Manhunt 2 is apparently bloody -- bloody awful. Reviews are starting to squirt out of outlets like a punctured carotid artery about Rockstar's juggernaut of controversy and it's pretty much what most were expecting. Looks like little Timmy won't be getting that "murder simulator" he wanted for the Wii this holiday, unless his parents want to punish him with bad gameplay. According to many of the reviews, the edits forced on the game by the ESRB actually hurt the overall Manhunt experience.

IGN (77/100): "Manhunt 2 for Wii is, in my opinion, the version to buy, if only because it looks ever-so-slightly better and offers a deeper level of interactivity since the Wii remote is used to act out executions. I've referred to this game as Splatter Cell before and I still think that's a fair comparison. Even with its blurred and darkened executions, Manhunt 2 is still an incredibly violent game - easily the most brutal you will find on Nintendo's console. ... The ESRB has forced Rockstar to make content changes which have in turn significantly reduced the impact of the franchise's trademark executions. In fact, oftentimes you won't even able to see who Danny is murdering or how he's doing it - instead, you'll behold a big, dark, motiony blur accompanied by gruesome sound effects. By comparison, many of the executions in the original Manhunt are much more satisfying."

GameSpy (50/100): "The biggest issue that fans of the original Manhunt will have with Manhunt 2 is the way that Rockstar toned down the violence in the game in order to appease the ESRB's ratings board. The game's trademark executions have been altered significantly, to the point where the player loses nearly all recognition of the events taking place onscreen. Initiating a killing maneuver cuts the camera to an angle more suitable for viewing, which is then browbeat by an unwieldy series of camera edits and obnoxious crimson filters that distort the images to the point where it's anyone's guess what exactly is taking place."

1UP (40/100): "Finally, and most unforgivably, the Wii version plays host to unskippable cut-scenes. Better still, they're frequently positioned after checkpoints so you can enjoy them over and over again whether you want to or not. Just in case the adolescent violence, clunky exposition, and lengthy visual explorations of 'kinky' S&M bars weren't embarrassing enough the first time around. Really, the game warrants a 4 because it's technically playable and, despite its best efforts, probably won't plunge the industry into a period of navel-gazing and political sanction. Everything else about it is largely forgettable. "

Need to explain to grandma why this whole Manhunt 2 kerfuffle is ridiculous? Then go pick up (or send her the link if she's all modern) to today's New York Times article which gives a simple version of the Manhunt 2 saga for mass consumption. If you've been keeping up with all the Manhunt 2 coverage then you pretty much already know everything the New York Times article has to say. Wait, you haven't been keeping up with the controversy ... seriously? OK, ok, we'll make an even simpler version of the NYT piece.

Here we go: Although violence in games is focused on more, movie and television violence is worse. Child sodomy is fine in movies, testicles being ripped off with pliers is bad for video games. Manhunt 2 still retains 99% of its AO content -- a pesky 1% change makes it M. The controversy showed the ESRB has teeth and also helped market a game that probably would not have gotten attention otherwise. NYT basically says the game "will probably prove as luridly, fleetingly diverting as any slasher flick." Fin.
New York Times does 'Manhunt 2 for Dummies' recap originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 29 Oct 2007 11:55:00 EST. Update: You know, we have no clue how we overlooked Guitar Hero III. Our most sincere apologies.

We've got several new games hitting the Wii this week, including two titles we've been anxious to get our hands on.
Just in case you haven't seen or heard anything about Manhunt 2, or you are terrible at making inferences or something, this new trailer for the game contains violent content and is best suited for adults. If you watch it, and you're surprised and appalled by gruesome imagery, we can't feel too bad, because you were warned! If you're surprised and appalled by gruesome jaggies-- well, that, we totally sympathize with. We've posted the trailer after the break for obvious reasons. We've posted the Manhunt 2 Wii up at the top instead, just because we like it.

In other Manhunt 2 news, this Aeropause post brings up an interesting loophole that Rockstar could use to sell Manhunt 2 in the UK. While the BBFC banned the game from being sold in stores, the ban apparently doesn't include games sold in not-stores. It covers physical media only. Therefore, if Manhunt 2 were to be released as a download, it could be sold even in its unexpurgated form! That's a neat idea, but we doubt Rockstar will take advantage of it. Especially since the Wii's storage space is so limited (and the PS2's hard drive is in so few households.)
Continue reading Manhunt 2 is scary-looking

Manhunt 2 is scary-looking originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 26 Oct 2007 10:30:00 EST. What's up? Pretty good day today, got to yell about violence on, well let's just say it's one of the top seven most respected news outlets. Then I had a KFC Famous Bowl. So yeah, a pretty great one all around. But then I saw the videos of these Manhunt 2 kills and frankly: I'm concerned. No, no, not about America's youth, don't be silly. I'm worrying what I'm going to get all worked up about.

I mean, there's a guy with a crowbar following another dude and then the screen gets all discolored and flashes. Maybe I could get upset on behalf of epileptic kids, but regular kids? I just don't know. You just can't see much at all, it's barely even sexy. ... I mean violent! Yeah! Also: pirates. But it does have it's plus sides too. For instance, it could make it possible for our friends in the UK to buy Manhunt 2, even though it's been effectively banned there.

Because of a loophole in the UK's 1984 Video Recordings Act, downloadable games don't need to go through the certification process required for retail games, meaning that a downloadable version of Manhunt 2 could be permitted. Of course, even if Rockstar decided that was an avenue they wanted to pursue, it would be an impossibility on the PS2 and a giant paradigm shift for the Wii's Virtual Console, so it still doesn't seem terribly likely. Ah well, at least we know that when Manhunt 2 turns our nation into a pack of murderous zombies, we'll have a country where we can chill out.

[Via CVG]
UK could still get Manhunt 2 as a download originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 25 Oct 2007 12:27:00 EST. Above is the trailer for the next installment in the controversial series, which since the big AO kerfuffle ended in the States, really hasn't been all that controversial.

We're just waiting to try out the Wiimote controls with the game and see if it's all the murder simulator it can be. From the trailer this sequel seems a little more thought through than the original Manhunt -- but still depraved. All we know is if some stupid controversy springs up following Manhunt 2's release with its M-rating clearly on the box, we're going to ask for someone to edit together a clip the worst parts of Saw IV (premiering this week) and Manhunt 2, and we'll see what piece of media really deserved to be potentially banned.
Manhunt 2 official trailer teases the depravity originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 25 Oct 2007 09:31:00 EST.
