First we hear Mark Wahlberg is definitely playing Nathan Drake in an Uncharted movie being created by The Fighter director David O. Russell. Then, Uncharted 3 director Justin Richmond told us that Russell had denied the whole story. Now, Wahlberg tells Moviehole "David O'Russell [sic] is writing right now and hopes to direct. It's myself, Joe Pesci and Robert De Niro."

Listen guys, we know we want to write a maelstrom of angry tweets about this project, but we need to know precisely what unseen force we'll be railing against. Can you please just help us out and tell us specifically who will be to blame for ruining Uncharted for us forever?

Russell's Mark Wahlberg-fronted Uncharted film adaptation isn't off to an awesome start. After Wahlberg confirmed his involvement last week, Russell spoke to the LA Times about his vision for the film, saying:
"This idea really turns me on that there's a family that's a force to be reckoned with in the world of international art and antiquities ... [a family] that deals with heads of state and heads of museums and metes out justice ... We'll have the family dynamic, which we've done in a couple of movies now. And then you take that and put it on the bigger, more muscular stage of an international action picture, but also put all the character stuff in it. That's a really cool idea to me."
Russell added that the pace at which the film's development is moving along is "a locomotive," and that he's already penned about half of the script -- meaning there's plenty of time to just like, sit back, spend some time with the two already very movie-like Uncharted games, and just like, reevaluate some stuff. Specifically, all of that stuff you said right there, about a family that doles out justice to museum owners. That whole ... part. Everything. All of it.

The actor, who also starred in ill-fated film-to-game adaptation Max Payne, says director David O. Russell (who he had previously worked with on Three Kings and The Fighter) plans to start shooting next summer. This, of course, means the geek-approved casting of Nathan Fillion in the role of Nathan Drake is out.

Although Wahlberg never specifically says he'll play the role of Nathan Drake, it was strongly implied by the actor when he said that Russell wants to cast Joe Pesci as his uncle and Robert De Niro as his father. Wahlberg says the movie is not going to be a "watered-down version, that's for sure." After all, with so many actors who can expertly deliver an f-bomb, it would be a shame if the T-rated game doesn't become an R-rated spectacle. Check out the MTV interview after the break.

The man is well versed in pleasant recreational activities, which made him the perfect candidate for a new program from Microsoft, who will donate Xbox 360 consoles and Kinect to the the Boys and Girls Club of America. "Thousands" of clubs across the country will receive the donation package, which includes the 4GB Xbox 360 S Kinect bundle and a copy of Kinect Sports.

"When I heard Xbox 360 wanted to give Kinect to Clubs across the country, I had to jump in and help," he said. Wahlberg is active in the Boys and Girls Club of America, having spent a majority of his youth at Clubs. The promotion is part of the Boys and Girls Club's initiative to promote exercise and healthy activity amongst youth. We've never been to a Boys and Girls Club, but we imagine they're largely open warehouse space, because Kinect kinda needs that to work.

The Max Payne movie is expected to slo-mo dive into retail January 20, 2009, reports HighDefDigest. The film, starring Mark Wahlberg, shot up the box office when it first opened and eventually grossed $40 million in domestic ticket sales.

The film will be available on Blu-ray and DVD. No word yet if the director commentary will cover the "fundamental story flaws" between the movie and the game.

We're big fans of Mark Wahlberg, despite his apparent lack of a sense of humor and his oftentimes horrible body of work. We're also big fans of Rockstar's bullet-time infused noir-fest, Max Payne. We also have a minor crush on the button cute Mila Kunis. We're also of the firm opinion that Ludacris is the greatest musician of our generation. Therefore, on paper, it would seem as though the new Max Payne flick would be the Citizen Kane of video game adaptations. On celluloid, however, the film apparently falls flat -- as these early reviews indicate.
  • Peter Travers - Rolling Stone: "Max Payne is a dank, dispiriting cop flick that merely requires Wahlberg to wear a scowl that could have been painted on digitally with more expressiveness."
  • Kyle Smith - New York Post: "This movie also has Blade Runner on its mind, and Raymond Chandler, but mostly it's a weak little sister to Sin City."
  • James Berardinelli - ReelViews: "Maybe fans of the game will be okay with the cinematic adaptation but for those who are new to Max and his world, this isn't an impressive introduction."
  • John Anderson - Newsday: "Mark Wahlberg, who has proved himself a very capable actor ("The Departed"), seems to have nominated himself for the Russell Crowe Lack of Charisma Award, and is running a pretty convincing campaign."

Perhaps it's the sight of a former rapper flying awkwardly through the air with guns blazing, or the amusing result of That 70's Show's Jacky pretending to be a real toughian, but we're feeling slightly optimistic about Max Payne's journey from game to film. Sure, it's a journey that's been attempted and failed by many blithering idiots who could barely stand upright, but we're intrigued by this film's gloomy atmosphere and winged, are-they-real-or-hallucinatory demons.

Maaax! Dearest of all our friends. After the break you'll find the trailer for the Max Payne movie, starring Marky Mark Wahlberg as the title character who knows how to deliver a noir monologue. The trailer gives us a glimpse of femme fatale Mona Sax and a taste of the guaranteed bullet time action. They've definitely captured the look and feel of the game, now we'll have to wait and see if the movie is any good.

We know, we know. We just brought you some Max Payne info and a pic, but for fans of the series, this new nugget was just too interesting to pass up. According to Variety, That 70s Show and Family Guy's Mila Kunis has just joined the cast as "an assassin who teams up with the title character to avenge her sister's death." If you're familiar with the series, that sounds like it could be Mona Sax, even though the character's name hasn't been revealed yet.

We're a little bit nervous about the casting, as we've never seen Kunis in something that's required her to be particularly hard-boiled, but we guess everybody has to start somewhere. What say you?

We're going to be honest and admit that we still don't get the Max Payne movie project. It's been five years since the last game in the series, and the brand power in the mass market has to be hovering around nil. We weren't even sure we believed it last month when we heard that filming was to start this month. That was, until we received this pic of Mark Wahlberg on the set of the film.

To us he looks ... well, like Mark Wahlberg in a dark jacket. But since Max's face has looked completely different in both of his games, we don't know exactly what we expected. But if you're in the Toronto area, you may be able to help us get a better idea of how things are coming along. One of our readers sent in a list of shooting locales and times where you might be able to catch a glimpse, we've put it right after the jump. You know where to send it if you find anything juicy.

We know it's been a while since you've heard anything about the Max Payne series of games, and don't worry: You won't be breaking your streak today. What you are going to hear about is an upcoming Max Payne film starring ... wait for it ... Mark Wahlberg. Yes, the former Funky Bunch CEO is reportedly going to be grimacing his way through an adventure based on the noir series. John Moore of Flight of the Phoenix and Behind Enemy Lines fame will direct.

What's just as (if not more) exciting to us it that we doubt Rockstar will miss the opportunity to cash in on the film with a new Max Payne, and, frankly, he's been gone too long.
