Sure, some of you lucky <strike>bastards</strike> readers already plopped a whole heap of time into Mass Effect thanks to K-Mart's inability to, you know, read. Others of us, however, don't get to play "Jack Bauer in Space" until tomorrow. Yeah, that's right, we're jealous individuals (sans those on staff who took advantage of the "blue light special") who know that Bioware determines its release schedule with a formula more complex than how the NFL calculates a QB's passer rating.

We here at Joystiq are all primed and ready to save the universe, use our <strike>Force</strike> special powers on enemy combatants, knock boots with some genderless aliens, and finally move past Jade Empire. However, maybe you're not convinced as we are -- that's okay because the Metareview is here to help.

GameSpy (100/100): "Mass Effect's greatest strength is the quality of the narrative. BioWare has a track record of producing amazingly engrossing storylines, but never before have you been presented with this level of meaningful interaction. You'll experience difficult and thought-provoking situations, including moral and ethical questions without a clear right or wrong answer. The Commander Shepard character is thus defined by player involvement, sublimely capturing the essence of role-playing."

IGN (94/100): "Mass Effect is game that is greater than the sum of its parts. Technical issues abound, but the majority of Mass Effect is so expertly delivered that it can transcend its weaknesses. Applying number ratings to a game like this doesn't do it justice because there is no way you can ignore its technical flaws. Simply put, Mass Effect is a game that must be played. Then it must be played again. Don't pass this one up."

Eurogamer (80/100): "Forced to stumble towards a conclusion, I'd say that despite the niggles, Mass Effect is most definitely a great game with an awful lot going for it - but one that doesn't quite deserve unquestioning praise. For what it achieves in delivering a compelling narrative and wonderful atmosphere, BioWare deserves a huge amount of credit, as there are few games that come anywhere near it in this regard. The dialogue system, and the impact it has on individual missions and the game as a whole is exceptional, adding greatly to the potential replay value. Where it doesn't quite hit the mark for me is in the action stakes. Although it underpins the game with all sorts of excellent ideas that ought to make it a deeper, more intelligent and immersive experience, the simple truth is that the minute-to-minute combat simply isn't as intense and involving as you'd expect from a game in 2007. Throw in some grumbles about the somewhat unoptimised state of the frame-rate, texture pop-in and v-syncing terrors, and it's a game that just falls short of our expectations. An eight, then, but a good one..."

Scientists picked apart the game from a logistical standpoint, Bungie discussed the creation of the game, gamers talked about how the game differed from it's previous iterations, and Brian Posehn brought the funny. A good time was had by all.

Tuesday night, Sci Fi is airing a special look at Mass Effect on the program. From the looks of it, we can expect the commentary of Keith David (Requiem for a Dream creepster who voices Captain Anderson in the game) and the ever insightful observations of the Cho-Bot. Of course, by that time, you'll probably have the game in your hot little hands, your mind aflutter with all the galactic exploration you'll soon be doing. Update: Microsoft has asked GameVideos to yank the video. Peepshow's over, folks!

WARNING: Unlike the sex scene we linked last week, this one can be described as "not safe for work," "not work safe," "NSFW," "NWS," and "not safe to play around female spouse." Any potential job loss, spouse loss, or sleeping on the couch that you incur from watching this video lies solely on your shoulders. That said, there isn't any Asari nipple to be seen in the video, so this is an FX level skin drama at best.
First, BioShock was sold a week in advance by Toys R' Us, then there were the reports of number of early sales of Halo 3 throughout Europe, then the recent Rock Band mix-up at Best Buy, and to top it all off, a number of lucky gamers have apparently gotten their hot little hands on copies of Mass Effect from Kmart - a full ten days before the game's official release date.

As with every instance of broken street dates, there's no guarantee that your local Kmart will be selling the game early, or that they will have any in stock. But if you're as anxious as we are to board the SSV Normandy to explore the Milky Way (while making some sweet, sweet, FCC-approved love), then you'll make the trip to your local Kmart, braving the Saturday shopping crowd, and sightings of terrifying anthropomorphic light bulbs.

[Thanks, Alex]
Kmart reportedly breaks Mass Effect street date originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 10 Nov 2007 14:45:00 EST. In short, the magazine thinks Mass Effect is one of the best games ever made. In particular, the magazine lauds the game's storyline and compelling characters. The review praises the game, noting that it has a deep and rich universe easily on par with Star Wars, even noting that it is "the next big franchise for science fiction junkies to latch onto." More importantly, the review notes that Mass Effect represents "a huge step forward for video games" and that it "rings in a new age of interactive storytelling."

The only downside of the game seems to be the combat, which is apparently hampered by balance problems and wonky AI. The review notes that the combat certainly isn't a deal breaker, and that it's still fun to play, but it's not quite on par with the grand universe present in the rest of the game.

All in all, Game Informer gives it a 9.75. How exactly one equates a game's deficiencies to a value of 0.25 we don't know, but we're sure the team at BioWare is pretty damned pleased (as are their new overlords, no doubt). Keep an eye out for the full review in the latest issue of Game Informer.

[Thanks, Morphy]
Game Informer gives Mass Effect 9.75 originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 16 Oct 2007 12:15:00 EST. Before our sleep-deprived and sensory addled brains shut down last night, we were ushered by Microsoft secret agents into a hotel room to spend some time with Mass Effect. Finally, hands-on instead of just eyes-on. Although it had been a long day, we managed to find a burst of adrenaline deep down within to keep us going.

We were shown the basic in-game talk interface: get near another character and hit the A button to start talking. You can direct the flow of the conversation, by selecting your responses with the left thumbstick, choosing from a radial menu. For instance, if someone is telling you about an attack, you can pick things like "Too bad they didn't kill you" to "I'm sorry" to "Really? What happened?"

They aren't exactly what your character will say, they're more like the gist of it. We tried to piss the people we encountered off, but no one took great offense. One woman we encountered really wanted to tag along with us, and although we tried as hard as we could to dissuade her, the last talk menu we were offered with her was something like, "Sure", "Go ahead", and "Okay". No, "Get lost!" option, so she must be important to the mission.

Gallery: Mass Effect

Continue reading Joystiq hands-on: Mass Effect

Joystiq hands-on: Mass Effect originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 11 Jul 2007 14:55:00 EST. Mass Effect's official site has a batch of new screens that showcase some close ups of the character models, whilst throwing in some action shots for good measure. These are really coming along and are a feast for the eyes. The faces look lifelike and have amazing levels of detail. Obviously, BioWare is putting the Unreal 3 Engine to very good use for this expansive title. Of course, having never had an official release date to begin with, it seems exceedingly impatient to consider the game delayed just as its first potential release window is revealed. Though there have been hints pointing towards a May or June release, September would be the first month Microsoft and BioWare have openly committed to -- if indeed the report is wholly accurate.

We'd prefer a month that was sooner (like April), but it seems the utterly blinding level of light bouncing off all the shiny spaceships, futuristic weapons and revoltingly moist aliens in the game just isn't enough for BioWare to stop polishing. The only worrying aspect of such a September release is that it would be awfully close to the August arrival of Hironobu Sakaguchi's Blue Dragon. Having access to both time-consuming RPGs within 30 days could prove socially, economically and hygienically disastrous for fans of the genre.

Curiously, when asked for comment on the September date (which could specifically be for Europe), the Mass Effect publisher only offered, "Microsoft has not announced a release date for Mass Effect."

Update: "We have not made any official announcements regarding release timing for Mass Effect," adds Microsoft. "At this time, any information about the game's release date is purely rumor and speculation."

Joystiq contacted CVG for clarification. We were politely informed that the information originated from a Microsoft employee and that it has yet to be "officially" announced. In other words, we're waiting on that official announcement letting us know we have to wait until September for the game -- point being, we're waiting.
Rumor: Mass Effect 'delayed', due in September [update] originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 23 Apr 2007 14:05:00 EST. Quite frankly we shouldn't use the word "delay" since there was no official release date set, but our collective consciouses expected the game to come rather soon. So, until official word gets out or this is cleared up, we'll err on the safe side and re-program our brains to expect a September release.
Mass Effect pushed back, may arrive in September originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 23 Apr 2007 11:30:00 EST. Embedded above is the "Final Emergency Transmission" and to be honest, we still have no clue what the point of all this YouTube video fun was for. Maybe it was Mass Effect's marketing team planting seeds of Mass Effect'ness into our brains and nothing more, but we've come to expect more from viral campaigns. Honestly, when we posted them we didn't notice the obvious lack of prettiness factor that Mass Effect has come to epitomize and therefore didn't touch on it. Anyway, you guys weren't the only ones to notice the degrade in quality, because CVG ran a story about all the ugliness. And today CVG got a response from Bioware agreeing that these screenshots are fugly, but having an answer to why they are in an explanation that goes a little like this;

"The whole truth of the matter is that the person at BioWare who took those screenshots made a mistake. People in our industry don't admit this much, but we do make mistakes. The person took those screens at the last minute as they were needed for the article. He did take them in game from areas of the game that worked and then he sent them off... He didn't clear them with Casey and the ME team though."

Indeed, those screenshots came from the game, but came from an unfinished non-representative portion of the final gameplay. Which, we might say, is quite comforting. So, in response to all this talk, Bioware released another Mass Effect screenshot representative of the actual game as seen above. Great communication and transparency of the development process always clears things up, thanks for the honesty Bioware.
Bioware explains those icky Mass Effect screens originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 04 Apr 2007 14:00:00 EST. And Mass Effect seems to be joining in on the swing of things by starting its own viral fun over on the inter-tubes of YouTube. YouTube member Spectre2183 posted two "emergency transmissions" and in the first one (embedded above) you can see what looks to be helmet cameras shooting all the action of an intense battle. The quality isn't all that great, which was probably intentional, but you can easily see some Mass Effect characters and gameplay. Also, further giving proof this is real marketing goodness, Spectre2183 has only posted these emergency transmissions and joined the YouTube community on March 26th. The second transmission is embedded after the break and be sure to tell us what you think this viral marketing will end up leading to.

[Thanks, Jason]
Continue reading Emergency transmission: Mass Effect viralness

Emergency transmission: Mass Effect viralness originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 31 Mar 2007 14:00:00 EST. As usual, the new shots show off an enormous level of detail. In these shots we get some close up detail of several characters, including Mass Effect's robotic enemy race, the Geth, and a nomad race, the Quarians (pictured). The more we see of Mass Effect, the more we slaver for its arrival. Hit the "read" link to check out more screens. All in all the art isn't terribly interesting, and it's more or less identical to the American box art. There is one key difference though, this box art has a gold tone to it and it has the words "Limited Collector's Edition" emblazoned across the top. This is the first we've heard of a special edition. We don't know what it will include, but it's a fairly safe bet it will come in a special case and include an extra DVD or two. Who knows, maybe it will ship with a bonus planet or two.

What would it take for you to spend an extra 10 simoleons on a collector's edition?
Mass Effect collector's edition sighted originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 13 Mar 2007 18:00:00 EST. Great games, he said, are memorable because of emotional moments. Muzyka stresses that Mass Effect will provide players with a truly cinematic, emotional experience. As if to prove his point, the demo takes place on a crisp HD display with a very loud surround sound speaker system. Muzyka picks up a control, starts the demo, and we begin Bioware's latest adventure.
Continue reading GDC 07: Mass Effect eyes on

GDC 07: Mass Effect eyes on originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 06 Mar 2007 22:00:00 EST. Fortunately, our very own Richard Mitchell will be attending the event and has now been essentially cornered into giving you a hands on report on what he sees and hopefully plays in regards to Mass Effect. Then again, we don't see reason why he wouldn't tell you about it in the first place.

Also worth noting is the recently announced prequel novels by game writer Drew Karpyshyn, and they will help flesh out the backstory on the Mass Effect universe. The first book, Revelation, will go on sale in May for $7.99 USD. So, will a couple books and some hands-on reporting hold you over till the early summer release?

[Via XboxAddict]
GDC has Mass Effect demo, books in May originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 01 Mar 2007 13:30:00 EST. The first question is the one that many will latch onto, though it is perhaps the least important: will Mass Effect fit on one disc? The answer is yes, but barely. Hudson admits that the team originally thought fitting the game on one disc would be a herculean task, but some technical wizardry came through in the end. Other more interesting questions followed. First, the game will support custom soundtracks, which should please all the Live jerks that put their music on so loud it comes through their headsets. Second, Mass Effect's lead character, Commander Sheperd, is highly customizable -- much more so than in KOTOR. Players will be able to choose the sex of the character, hair, facial features, and skill set. Not only that, but there will be plenty of gear in the game that affects your appearance as well. In other words, your not stuck with the brooding, shaven Sheperd you see above.

What sort of character will you create?

[Via Joystiq]
Mass Effect not too massive for one disc originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 28 Feb 2007 10:30:00 EST. What does Muzyka see as the future of storytelling in games? Eyes. More specifically, Muzyka believes that realistic eyes (and emotional expression overall) are very important for good storytelling. Speaking specifically of Mass Effect Muzyka notes that characters will look you over or nod their heads, communicating without speaking at all. "You don't need to have dialogue," says Muzyka, noting that an emotional moment needs no words.

In describing the overall tone of Mass Effect Muzyka calls it "Jack Bauer in space." "You have complex moral choices to make. You're out to save the galaxy. You're going to have to do things that don't seem like they're good to do that." Finally, Totilo asks Muzyka if there is a one artistic moment that serves as the benchmark that games must reach in storytelling. Said Muzyka, "in Schindler's List, that moment where you see the little girl in the [red] dress ... and then you see her later [among the dead]. For me, if you can convey emotion to that level in a game then we've succeeded. For us that's our goal."

Wow. Lofty goals indeed. Do you think storytelling in games will ever be on par with literature and film? Does it even have to be?
Bioware: Mass Effect is "Jack Bauer in space" originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 20 Feb 2007 16:30:00 EST. In the interview Ray claims that Mass Effect will be "about 40 hours or so for the main story, so it's going to be a good-sized BioWare RPG". He also stated that "off the beaten path, there's probably another 20 or 30 hours or so of stuff". Good golly, it's looking like Mass Effect will be the RPG behemoth that we were always hoping for. With how the game looks, possible talk of sequels, and hearing how involved the game really is, RPG fans will be in for a huge treat when Mass Effect releases this year.

[Via Gamespot forums]
[Thanks, dpcough]
Mass Effect is going to be one big RPG originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 11 Feb 2007 16:35:00 EST. Bioware just released six new screenshots from their baby Mass Effect, and do they ever look sexy. The character models are clean, crisp, and refreshing. The environments are shiny, life-like, and lite nicely. And we just used up our adjective limit for this post, so go check out all the screens after the jump and come up with your own. Anyone a tad bit more excited after seeing these fresh screenshots?

[Via Xboxygen]
New Mass Effect screens are gorgeous originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 07 Feb 2007 01:15:00 EST. It turns out that Microsoft has since debunked the rumor and changed the date on the site to "TBD", matching the North American regions. While the monkeys keep working away over at BioWare, there are no release date related announcements pertaining to the title other than it's not May 18th. Still, don't rule out a May/June release, but we'll have to wait until we get an official announcement.

[Thanks, Mythor & Jonah]
Mass Effect won't be in May originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 04 Feb 2007 18:30:00 EST. Now, we recommend you sit down for the following heart stopping revelation. Mass Effect now has an official release date from a very official source. Well, official Australian source. The title is listed as May 18th, 2007 on Xbox Australia's page for the upcoming Bioware title, yet still "TBD" on the North American front. This falls in line with the speculation that Mass Effect would be hitting retailers around May-June. Best case scenario, of course, would be that the May 18th release date is applicable across all major regions. Hopefully that will be the case and we can all expect to have this massive RPG in our disc tray by mid May.

[Thanks, Thomas]
Mass Effect gets dated downunder [update 1] originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 02 Feb 2007 12:00:00 EST. The latest (and only) entry comes from Mass Effect project director, Casey Hudson. Hudson informs us that development is moving swimmingly. He describes environmental effects, uncannily realistic faces, and the workings of a memorable musical score. Hudson describes the inspiration of the musical score as classic sci-fi movies. Essentially, the BioWare team is looking to blend orchestral music (a la Star Trek) with the electronic trappings of artists like Tangerine Dream. The idea is to evoke the feeling of old sci-fi flicks. Sounds good to us.

[Via Gamerscore Blog]
BioWare blogs it up on IGN originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 30 Jan 2007 11:30:00 EST. Just look at it, sitting there in all its majesty. Okay, so it's not the most thrilling thing in the world, but it means we're that much closer to the game actually being released, right? As an added bonus, Microsoft promises that we'll be hearing more about Mass Effect in the "near future." Whenever "near" is, we can tell you right now that it's not near enough. You can see a gigantor-fied version of the box art after the break. Also, if you're starving from some Mass Effect news, check out this interview on IGN.
Continue reading Behold, the Mass Effect box! The strategy will span both "console and PC" platforms, confirmed CEO Ray Muzyka.
"Consoles," eh? Could BioWare be expanding its console development beyond Xbox 360? After all, a DS title is in the works.
BioWare embracing episodic content for all future projects originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 18 Jan 2007 22:25:00 EST. Bioware CEO Ray Muzyka also said they were planning episodic content for upcoming games Dragon Age and Jade Empire: Special Edition. Do you think the whole idea of episodic content is a good trend in the gaming industry or do you feel their effort should be put into creating a full fledged sequel? We can almost guarantee that if episodic becomes a hit you'll see developers pumping it out like crazy. Why would they create a whole new game when they can "tack on" other goods and cash in on a game that is already released? We saw tons of great games -- Oblivion, Gears of War, and Dead Rising just to name a few -- Xbox Live Arcade showed signs of maturity, Xbox Live grew by leaps and bounds, and overall 360 sales are closing in on the 10 million mark. Yes, it was a good time to be a gamer if you had a 360. What about the future? What does 2007 hold for the Xbox 360? The video showcases some of Mass Effect's dynamic dialogue system, but it's mostly about the squad combat. You are allowed real time control over any member of your party and have access to numerous weapon upgrades and magic (called Biotics in the Mass Effect universe). Players can also pause the action at any time -- much like KOTOR -- to give squad mates orders. This option allows you to tactically plan what would otherwise be a difficult battle. KOTOR was based on a d20 rule set, but if any such calculations are present in Mass Effect, they are well hidden. All in all it looks like a blast, and we can't wait to get our hands on more info.
Mass Effect X06 combat and dialogue video originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 08 Dec 2006 14:30:00 EST. According to 360Monster, the video will be available on both Xbox Live Marketplace and the official Mass Effect website. Things have been very quiet on the Mass Effect front -- apart from one trailer last month -- so anything new is fantastic. Keep your eyes peeled Friday afternoon for the video. We'll be sure to post the video as soon as we find it.

[Via 360Monster]
Mass Effect X06 demo video tomorrow originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 07 Dec 2006 15:30:00 EST. While the delay between the floor showing and XBL Marketplace download might seem ridiculous, bear in mind that it took almost the exact same amount of time (two months and some change) to get their E3 trailer to the XBLM masses.

We can only hope that means they're just so busy perfecting the title that they don't have enough spare time to show off the goods. We hope. <strike>Embedded after the break is a low-quality version of the trailer that's taking 7 weeks for delivery.</strike> The video that will be available on Friday will be 5 minutes long and will feature a voice over from Project Director Casey Hudson -- we've included a video after the break which features low-quality footage similar to what we'll see on Friday.

See Also:
Xbox 360 impressions: Mass Effect
MTV's unaired Mass Effect preview

[Via 1UP]

[Update 1: Clarifications were made following comments left by a Bioware employee. We have received word that trailer had to be cut due to time constraints. If you feel slighted, then fear not, for the trailer is available on MTV's cavernous flash site. If you'd rather not traverse such fetid places -- even if it is the only place you'll find the trailer in hi-res -- you can watch the YouTubified version after the break.
Continue reading Mass Effect combat video uses the force

Mass Effect combat video uses the force originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 16 Nov 2006 11:30:00 EST. So long in fact, that we damned near fell out of our collective chairs when we found out there was actual news about Mass Effect. For those that don't know (or don't remember) Mass Effect is the latest RPG offering from Bioware, creators of hits Knights of the Old Republic and Jade Empire. Seriously, the last "news" we had about Mass Effect was a picture pack before X06. A picture pack! At any rate, the news is this: MTV will be featuring a new trailer for Mass Effect during tomorrow's episode of, ahem, The G-Hole (who comes up with these names?). The G-Hole, MTV's first show specifically about video games, will air tomorrow night at 8PM EST as part of MTV's Gamer's Week 2.0. The trailer, along with other exclusive Mass Effect content, will be available at Games.MTV.com after the television debut.

So, all you enterprising YouTubers out there, grab this trailer when it debuts so we won't have to wade through the flash based nightmare that is MTV's website. (Actually don't do that, because it's, like, totally copyright infringement or something. And don't think you can get away with it just because there's absolutely nothing we can do to stop you, either.)
Mass Effect trailer debuts on MTV tomorrow originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 14 Nov 2006 13:30:00 EST.
