The recent yet retro-styled platformers become available to North American PS Plus members tomorrow in a free combo pack. And yes, since you asked, that's more than enough excuse to link to some awesome Mega Man tunage, thank you.

A North American PS Plus subscription also grants you entry to the bloodthirsty arena of the God of War: Ascension multiplayer beta, as of tomorrow. Budding onto PS Plus later tomorrow as well are indie RTS Eufloria, discounted by half to $2.50, and NCAA Football 13 DLC in the form of the Recent Winners pack, which you'll be able to score for free.
Mega Man 9 & 10 Combo Pack free for PS Plus members this week originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 07 Jan 2013 14:30:00 EST. In addition to the Mega Man 9 and 10 DLC packs listed as discounted in this week's PSN update, you can also get ... Mega Man 9 and 10. And Mega Mans 1-3. Though they didn't show up on Sony's official list of updates, the entire Mega Man catalog on PS3 is on sale this week, half off.

The PSOne Imports versions of Mega Man 1, 2, and 3 (based on the Japanese PlayStation re-releases) are now available for $2.99 each. Mega Man 9 and 10 sell for $4.99 each this week, with DLC bundles an extra $2.99. Given Capcom's recent attitude toward Mega Man, we'd love to see what happened if these discounts led to a massive sales boost.
Mega Man 1, 2, 3, 9, and 10 on sale on PSN originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 09 Aug 2011 19:30:00 EST. Eric Ruth, an independent developer who more than proved his prowess with Pixel Force: Left 4 Dead, recently showed off the fruits of his latest labor: A completely renovated, high-definition version of Mega Man 9. Ruth managed to recreate every single character, enemy and background by hand, programmed the game, and used a number of fan-made remixes of the original game's tracks. You can check out a video demonstration of Galaxy Man's stage just past the jump.

Ruth has decided not to complete the game for a number of reasons; the fear of a C&D from Capcom being a substantial one of them. He's already working on his next project -- and after making an HD game into an 8-bit game, and then an 8-bit game into an HD game, we can't wait to see what he does next.
Continue reading 8-bit Left 4 Dead guy's latest project: Mega Man 9 HD Remix

8-bit Left 4 Dead guy's latest project: Mega Man 9 HD Remix originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 06 Mar 2010 22:00:00 EST. For the longest time, we didn't understand game soundtracks. "Hey, just turn the game on and walk away," we said. But after our 17th red ring and 10th Cell chip to commit melty, plasticy suicide, we quickly began to see the value.

Capcom's feeding our new habit with three new additions to the Music section of the Capcom Store: Ten Years Of Resident Evil: The Official Soundtrack, Resident Evil 5: Original Soundtrack and Street Fighter IV: Original Soundtrack. If you too are hesitant about leaping into game soundtracks, Capcom's sweetening the offer with 25 percent off the Mega Man 9 score for anyone who purchases one of the new offerings.
Resident Evil and Street Fighter join the Capcom music store originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 21 Oct 2009 05:00:00 EST.
Since the beginning of this console generation, one question has been on the minds of ... probably a few people, at some point: which home console is the fastest downloader? To answer that question, the staff of MTV Multiplayer engaged in an informal experiment using the one game shared by PSN, XBLA, and WiiWare: Mega Man 9.

The winner? It's kind of complicated! For one thing, it turns out that the Wii version of the game is much smaller: just 8.3 MB versus 63 MB on PSN and 88.7 on XBLA, necessitating a MB/sec measurement. In addition, the download speeds varied for the three members of the Multiplayer team, preventing a definitive answer. They tested the download speeds of various other (non-shared) games and got the same all-over-the-place results.

In the end, they were able to come to a useful conclusion: the PlayStation 3 downloaded games more quickly over a wireless connection, and the Xbox 360 downloaded games more quickly overall (because of its use of a wired connection). You guys can probably get some kind of fanboy boast out of that if you really want to.
It was totally great, and totally a unique presentation for a modern game. Since then, two more faux-retro games have been announced for WiiWare: the currently Japan-only Eventful Journey! 1up's interview with Mega Man 9 producer Hironobu Takeshita offers a look back at the brilliant downloadable sequel and its development. The 8-bit style, which is one of the game's most distinctive and eye-catching features, almost didn't happen! While Capcom's management liked the digital distribution idea (it's cheap!), they didn't go for the retro look at first. "We heard lots of negative responses; they thought it would be better to make it 3D and that the 8-bit style would only appeal to the Mega Man fans, which would limit the sales potential." Presumably, they eventually figured out that 8-bit graphics were also cheap.

Takeshita also describes the idea behind the item shop, which is wonderful and hilarious. "Even if MM9's 8-bit design interested them, the difficulty level would turn them off. With that in mind, we tried to create a system that encourages casual gamers who might not be so experienced with action games." That's right, the item shop is in there to offer assistance to casual players. We love the idea that someone at Capcom thought that all people needed to be able to finish Mega Man 9 was a few E-tanks and a new dress for Roll.

Now, having tasted the greatness, we need more.

That's where Mega Man character designer and Capcom bigwig Keiji Inafune comes into the picture. During a recent interview with 1UP, he commented on the possibility of another downloadable Mega Man title, stating that Mega Man 9 came based on "our users' feedback." He went on to elaborate by saying the users "indicated that they wanted to see it again, so if we can continue to find ways to involve users and use their feedback to evolve the game, I think we can go on to continue to make MM10, MM11, and so on. The main point is how and if we can continue to incorporate user feedback into the creation of the game."

Mr. Inafune, just do it already. Mega Man 9 had to have sold truckloads, and you all got more from us on the DLC, so what's the deal? Personally, we're not willing to settle for any less than a new 8-bit Mega Man each year. So can you get on it? Please?

In fact, when Mega Man 9 was announced, we ran around picking up random telephones looking for a way out of what we thought was surely The Matrix. Seriously, how could something so good happen to us? It seemed like a dream. And now, this trailer for a fan-made Mega Man movie by Eddie Lebron is along those lines.
For those of you who've already tackled the new robot bosses, been through Wily's castle, and even taken down Fake Man, it may seem that Mega Man 9 still has something new to offer.
"There's only one undiscovered Mega Man 9 secret that I know about ... I don't predict anyone will discover this one for quite a while yet," Killian said over at the Capcom boards. Capcom has sent out screens of this week's available Mega Man 9 DLC, including the new Special Stage and the two Hard Modes. We don't know if these screens originate from Hard or Expert Mode, but whatever version of the game this is, it is ridiculous. It's making us nervous just to look at it.

There are also new screens from the super-cool Endless Mode included with the last round of DLC, as well as a character portrait for Fake Man, which seems to confirm that it is the police robot and not ... who we thought it might be. Who knows? Capcom could still be misleading us.

[Via press release]
Gawk at Mega Man 9's Hard Mode, other DLC originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 20 Oct 2008 13:42:00 EST. We're not sure which in-game parameters have been tweaked or how enemies have been modified, but Capcom has somehow managed to make its retro-vitalized platformer, Mega Man 9, even more challenging. If you're the sort who enjoys having your confidence smashed to a squirming pulp and would gladly pay for the privilege, the second round of Mega Man 9 DLC is sure to be right up your trap-laden alley.

Three downloadable $1 packs arrive on the WiiWare Channel today (XBLA and PSN versions following on October 21st and October 23rd, respectively), adding a Special Time Attack Stage, Hard Mode and Expert Mode, which "triples the level of difficulty from the default Mega Man 9 game." Need more? Rumor has it that next week will see the release of Ultra Expert Mode, which issues crippling electric shocks via the controller every time you plummet down a bottomless pit.

Full descriptions of the DLC can be found after the break.
We feel bad for our old friend Mega Man. It looks like, in spite of being both a boy and a robot, he has somehow started to lactate. Why do we say that? Because Capcom is milking him for all he's worth. This Thursday, three new pieces of DLC will be available for this ever-growing retro-styled game. Will fans continue to shell out their dough?

Hard Mode - Dubbed Hero Mode in Japan, this mode enables you to play the entire game on an increased difficulty level with alternate enemy distribution and spawning points. Hard Mode is not compatible with Rankings or Challenges Modes.

Expert Mode - Dubbed Super Hero Mode Japan, this mode represents the apex of Mega Man 9 difficulty settings and is not for the novice Mega Man 9 player. This mode triples the level of difficulty from the default Mega Man 9 game. Expert Mode is not compatible with Rankings or Challenges Modes.

Special Time Attack Stage - This DLC gives you an additional stage for Time Attack Mode, complete with an all new level and Robot Master Boss, "Fake Man." Similar in difficulty to the Willy Stages, players will have a fun time tackling this time sensitive competitive stage. Special Time Attack Stage is not compatible with Challenge Mode.

We'd mostly like to check in: How is your progress in Mega Man 9? If you never bought it, are you thinking about it? If you have purchased it, how far have you gotten? To be a bit more timely with our discussion topic, have you picked up any of the downloadable content? The Special Stage available today sounds especially interesting -- and it happens to cost a mere 100 points, or 1/5 of the cost of Urban Champion.

Basically, we just want to know: are you still enjoying the return of Mega Man?

Wii Warm Up: An excuse to talk about Mega Man 9 again originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 20 Oct 2008 08:00:00 EST. Mega Man 9 producer Hironobu Takeshita may have revealed the new Robot Master at the end of next week's downloadable Special Stage, or ... he may not have. "His name is Fake Man. He appears on the special stage available in downloadable content." Takeshita offers a vague hint about his identity, but the need for hinting is seemingly obviated by the picture of what might be Fake Man, posted right under this statement in his GameSpot interview. It's the robot cop (not RoboCop) who Wily used to capture Dr. Light.

However, something about the name "Fake Man" -- not to mention one or two hints given in-game -- makes us think that picture is leading us away from the true identity of the boss. Reactions to the new format seem to be somewhere in the middle, so perhaps we'll alternate between the two styles, or possibly merge them. Continued feedback is always appreciated. With that said, here's another stab in the new format. This time, with Mega Man 9 fever still running rampant (made all the more frantic with this past Monday's release of Proto Man), we've decided to take a look at the blue bomber's non-ZX series on the DS: Mega Man Star Force.

Pedigree
Mega Man Star Force 2: Zerker X Saurian is -- hang on, I've gotta catch my breath after that title ... whew ... okay, I'm good -- a sequel to the Mega Man Star Force titles. I say "titles" because Capcom decided to split the title up into three "versions," similar to Nintendogs and most Pokemon games. When done right, this can be awesome. But as is the case with most things Capcom touches, it's a money-maker. That's the rub with Capcom: they produce some of the finest titles ever, but they certainly aren't shy about squeezing every penny from a game or franchise possible. Back to Star Force, once again Capcom has released multiple editions of the title. This time, only two were created: Ninja and Saurian, the latter of which we'll be using. The game is an indirect successor to the Mega Man Battle Network series. Like its predecessors, it involves light-action incorporated into RPG-styled battles. The root gameplay is enjoyable, but doesn't seem to have the lasting power to be re-packaged perpetually until the end of the time as does the primary franchise.

Continue reading Bury the Shovelware: Mega Man Star Force 2 - Zerker X Saurian

Bury the Shovelware: Mega Man Star Force 2 - Zerker X Saurian originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 08 Oct 2008 14:00:00 EST. For quite a while, it was a virtual tie between it and xkcd's Flash Games, but in the end Penny Arcade's homage to Mega Man 9 A Trick of Retrospective took top honors in this week's webcomic wrapup. As one commenter quipped, the fourth panel -- the one with all the screaming and angry swearing at the TV -- is conspicuously absent.

Second place went to xkcd, while third went to the other homage to Mega Man 9, Digital Unrest's Return to Form. Capcom has announced that the first wave of downloadable content for Mega Man 9 will land on XBLA this Tuesday, not even a week since the game debuted on the service. The content available will include a playable Proto Man and a new gameplay mode called Endless Attack (you can probably guess how that one works). Official prices haven't been announced, though Proto Man and Endless Attack cost $2.00 and $3.00, respectively, on Nintendo's WiiWare service. Of course, we can't properly gauge what it costs to convince yourself that Capcom isn't screwing you by charging for modes that should have been included with the game in the first place.

The remaining bits of DLC are expected to arrive the week of October 20.
Mega Man 9 "DLC" arrives this week originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 06 Oct 2008 18:00:00 EST. The first, Endless Attack Mode, offers a new, never-ending endurance-style level, for 300 Wii Points. The second, more widely discussed update, adds a playable Proto Man to the game, for 200 points. Proto Man can slide and charge his weapon (though the blast isn't as large as a fully-charged Mega Buster), and he has a shield that blocks shots while jumping, but he also has double the recoil and takes double the damage of Mega Man. Furthermore, he can't use the Shop and he has no story of his own.

Most importantly -- and about which we are the most pleased -- the Proto Man whistle plays at the beginning of every life or every level. You can read more about the details of the Proto Man DLC here, or, of course, you could go download it! Just look in the "Downloadable Content" area of the game instead of somewhere in the Wii Shop. We told you last month Proto Man was headed for Mega Man 9 as a selectable character via DLC. Now we've got some screenshots of the guy in action. As a reminder, here are the future DLC modes for Mega Man 9, as initially revealed through the Wii version's manual:

Endless Attack (estimated price: $2.99): "Test your skills on a stage without end. Try to break the record for getting the farthest. Results will be displayed in the Rankings. Not compatible with Challenges."

Proto Man Mode (estimated price: $1.99): "Play the game as Proto Man. You can use the shield while jumping. Some of Proto Man's abilities may differ from Mega Man's. There is no story for Proto Man. Not compatible with Rankings or Challenges."

Hero Mode (estimated price: $0.99): "Play the game with a more difficult level of enemy distribution. Not compatible with Rankings or Challenges."

Superhero Mode (estimated price: $0.99): "Play the game with a super difficult level of enemy distribution. Not compatible with Rankings or Challenges."

Special Stage (estimated price: $0.99): "Gives you another Time Attack Stage to try, including a new Boss at the end! Results will be displayed in the Rankings. Not compatible with Challenges."

Prices are estimated based on their cost in Wii points. The first two (of five) reminders that Mega Man 9 is not a retro title -- also known as premium downloadable content -- is available now on WiiWare and will be coming to Xbox Live and PlayStation Network on Tuesday and Thursday, respectively (via press release). As previously noted, you can expect Endless Attack (300 Nintendo points) and Proto Man (200 NPs) this week. Proto Man has a charge shot, slide and a reflective shield, but he also takes double damage and is knocked back twice as far.

The remaining DLC -- Hero, Super and Special modes -- are expected October 20 for WiiWare, with the XBLA/PSN content presumably coming the same week.

On one side of things, we have Mega Man 9, a brand new game in the series done in a retro style. On the other, we have War World, which the developers originally announced was scheduled to arrive last August. And yet, even a year from its missed debut, it's still one of the best looking XBLA games out there. So which is worth the dough, tough-as-nails platforming or online twitch multiplayer? Check out the latest installment of XBLA in Brief to find out.
Remember the Mega Man 9 press kit? Of course you do -- a better question may be "Have you been able to drive the Mega Man 9 press kit out of your thoughts for even a single, restful second?" Well, if you're freaking out about this item, you should take your nervous energy and put it to good use on Capcom's Mega Man forum.

The Capcom Unity staffers are picking worthy fans and handing them redemption codes for free press kits. The item is apparently hidden in the store somewhere, priced exorbitantly, but we haven't been able to find it. If you are in the mood to spend money on one of these, there's always eBay.
Capcom granting Mega Man 9 swag to worthy fans originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 03 Oct 2008 17:15:00 EST. Retro and war fans unite. Now available on the Xbox Live for is the retro-sytle adventure Mega Man 9 and the 3D mech action of War World. At 800MS points a piece this week's XBLA releases offer two completely different experiences in another double-shot of Arcade goodness. Survive as Mega Man in the classically designed adventure that is sure to leave a pile of broken controllers strung about your room -or- jump into a giant mech and battle it out in a stylized 3D world against ... you know, other mechs in War World. What are your initial impressions of this week's newest titles?
Mega Man 9 and War World hit the Arcade originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 01 Oct 2008 10:00:00 EST.
Having trouble with the retro throwback title Mega Man 9? The blue-bomber's latest outing has more than a few gamers frustrated with its old-school difficulty. Fortunately, GamesRadar has you covered. They've created a video walk-through of each stage, beginning with Splash Woman all the way through to the bitter end with Dr. Wily. Some gamers consider the order you fight the Robot Masters to be spoilers, so we took the liberty of blocking out the order in the above picture. The videos, which are after the jump, ask you for your age before you are allowed to view them, but there is no inappropriate content in them.

Remember old school fans and rejoice. Making his triumphant debut on the Xbox 360 tomorrow is Megs himself in Mega Man 9 for the Xbox Live Arcade. Priced at 800MS points ($10), Mega Man 9 was specifically designed to reignite nostalgic thoughts of classic Mega Man adventures on the NES with a retro look, old school graphical glitches and punishing difficulty.

It isn't all wondrous in the world of Mega Man 9 however, as the already released Wii version of the game inadvertently announced all of Capcom's DLC plans for the game. Among the downloadable content are a playable Proto Man with charge and slide abilities and new modes. For perspective, when all leaked DLC is included in the price of Mega Man 9 the retro-style downloadable title increases to an $18 purchase. Do you plan on going retro this week?
Mega Man 9 blasts XBLA tomorrow originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 30 Sep 2008 19:00:00 EST.
Ugh, I'm so sick with the obsession over Mega Man 9. WE GET IT, IT'S A RETRO GAME. WHOOPEE. No, seriously, I'm sick of my own obsession with it. I still haven't picked up Wario Land: Shake It!, de Blob, or NHL 2K9. That's mainly because I've spent every waking moment enjoying the blue bomber's latest outing. My Wii Fit board is scolding me for its lack of use, my girlfriend is feeling neglected, and apparently my judgment is slipping. But there's something about the game that just won't let go of me. The thing should be illegal for its extremely addictive nature, right next to heroin and Harvest Cheddar Sun Chips.

I usually fall behind on discussing recent games, as I like to take awhile to fully absorb and process the arts and entertainment before I comment on it. But I think my Wii's play log will testify that I've made myself quite familiar with the title. The main quest is conquered, the event challenges are being slowly but steadily checked off the list, and I'm trying my best to climb the leaderboards of the time attack levels. Without any further ego-stroking, here's the top five things we love about Mega Man 9. Then we won't talk about it for a few weeks. Promise! ... maybe.

Arguably the two most eagerly awaited Wii games of September have something slightly unusual and wholly awesome in common: they're both 2D. Mega Man 9 and Wario Land: Shake It! have each been widely lauded for daring to ignore the third dimension, but they're still quite different in terms of how they use 2D.

Mega Man 9 rejects all modern graphical conventions, taking the player through a timewarp to 1988 with its intentionally blocky, charming sprites. Conversely, Wario Land: Shake It! is straight from the Metal Slug school of design, in that it uses painstakingly detailed, beautiful hand-drawn art. Which do the Wii Fanboy staff prefer? Read on to hear both sides of the argument!

Mega Man 9 hit WiiWare (and the PS3's service) this week, and is just around the corner for Xbox owners. We won't hold it against you (much) if you're not getting it on the Wii (for shame). We just want to know if you got it (or are going to), and if so, is it all you dreamed of and more? We heard from several people when JC's review debuted, but that was days ago. The way some of you were playing, you're probably now stuck in all-new areas.
Wii Warm Up: But is it Mega? originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 26 Sep 2008 08:00:00 EST. Yup, random capitalization in titles is still annoying -- especially in game titles.

On that note, it's a big week for the PSN update. WipEout HD makes its debut, along with several other downloadable titles, including Mega Man 9. Other than the murderous look that comes from spending too much time in Dr. Wily's Castle, we think that the official Mega Man 9 t-shirt is the most effective method of sharing your pain.

Capcom's online store is now taking preorders for the black shirt featuring the American Mega Man 9 "boxart" for shipping on September 30. It costs $24.95 plus shipping, which is actually quite a bit more than the game costs -- but it's entirely worth it when you consider that the "proprietary MegaWeave[TM] technology provides improved gaming performance in Mega Man(R) 9 and all other Capcom titles." Sorry, Roll's Item Shop shoppers -- Capcom doesn't accept screws!

[Minor update: it appears that leaving an item in your cart and then backing out with your browser's 'back' button triggers a survey pop-up that, when completed, nets you 10% off your purchase!]

Display your failure proudly: Mega Man 9 shirt now available for purchase originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 25 Sep 2008 14:27:00 EST. Are you ready for the best PSN update you've ever seen? Until the US update occurs later today, that is. We had no idea it was coming to Europe, but Burnout Paradise is now available at the ridiculously affordable price of £25/€30. Definitely worth picking up if you don't have it, especially after today's trophy patch. WipEout HD makes its triumphant debut today as well, alongside Mega Man 9 and two Burnout titles for the PSP. Blimey. There are also more demos, add ons, videos and themes (including a Bioshock one which we're looking forward to seeing). Stop reading this blurb and check out the full list of content:

Playable content

You may know this from reading the operations guide or from trying it, but in case you don't, Mega Man 9 does not recognize GameCube controllers -- despite previous information leading us to believe that it would. We had yet to try it, satisfied with the Wiimote and the Classic, until alerted by tipster "fatcatfan." We switched on the Wavebird, kept close by due to frequent Chibi-Robo, and ... didn't play Mega Man 9. Confirmed.

This is especially bad news for people who ordered RetroPorts specifically for Mega Man, or who expected to use the Hori GameCube pad. Please don't let it stop you from buying Mega Man 9.

Mega Man 9 doesn't support GameCube controllers after all originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 24 Sep 2008 08:55:00 EST.
