It was to be published by Capcom, but the company had reservations about the new intellectual property -- so much so that it nearly canned the project outright. Ex-Capcom global head of production Keiji Inafune recalled his side of the story during an impassioned GDC 2012 speech yesterday.

Inafune claims he watched from the outside as Capcom's support for Resident Evil faded, and while he worked on other titles within the same company. Mikami fought for the fledgling game, eventually getting it published for Sony's PlayStation. The rest, of course, is zombie-ridden history.

When Capcom began work on a sequel, Inafune says he got himself involved in a production role. "While Mikami focused on the game, as the producer, it was my mission to sell this title to as many people around the world," he said to a room full of attendees. But with the massive success of the first RE title, Inafune's role as salesman was relegated to a cake walk. "With my previous title Mega Man Legends, it was pretty challenging to even book a round of press appointments. No one was interested in hearing about a new Mega Man title," Inafune said. "However, the scenario was completely different with RE2. Once we announced the project, the requests poured in."
Continue reading How Resident Evil 2 helped Keiji Inafune become the indie dev he is today

How Resident Evil 2 helped Keiji Inafune become the indie dev he is today originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 08 Mar 2012 09:00:00 EST. During the latest installment of the "Ask Capcom" video series, Capcom USA vice president Christian Svensson single-handedly shot down any hopes of Mega Man Legends coming to the PSOne Classics storefront before the arrival of the series' third installment. Svensson replied to a fan inquiring about the possible PSN port, saying, "unfortunately Legends isn't going to be able to be up there; it failed an I.P. sweep and a contract check."

Svensson explained that certain games in the Capcom library use intellectual properties and voice acting performances which the company no longer has the licensing rights to use. Svensson said Capcom avoids re-releasing these titles "due to historical litigation or fear of potential future litigation." Part of us totally understands, but another part of us just wishes they'd get some super-lawyers and figure this thing out. We like to call that particular part of ourselves "The Part that Really Wants to Play Mega Man Legends Again."
Capcom: Mega Man Legends can't come to PSN due to licensing originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 20 May 2011 14:00:00 EST. Fans voted to choose the character design for a new heroine, with Shinsuke Komaki's design (above) winning by 2,400 votes. "Being able to hear opinions directly from you the fans was a unique experience for me," Komaki said, "and I am so thrilled to be a part of Legends 3 in this capacity."
Servbot fans, take heed! Capcom is taking pre-orders for the adorable Servbot figures seen here. They're 3.5 inches tall, have movable arms and adjustable bobbling action. They're a bit expensive at $9.95 plus shipping, but there are fewer than a thousand available. With over 40 games in these series alone, one thing is obvious: there's a lot of Mega Man out there. The diminutive blue-clad hero has shown up on an impressive number of platforms in the past two decades, and often one game led to another, and another, and another, eventually spawning a whole bucketload of sequels. However, when Mega Man took a turn into the third dimension, the predictable half-dozen follow-up installments never materialized.

In 1997, Capcom took Mega Man in a radically new direction with Mega Man Legends, a 3D action-RPG for the Sony Playstation (and the N64 under the moniker Mega Man 64). It's an all-new Mega Man sporting a familiar look, but the gameplay is significantly different -- dungeon exploration, item creation, and weapon upgrading are just some of the RPG staples present in Mega Man Legends. Despite its differences from classic Mega Man, Legends is a fun game that succeeds in shaking up the formula. And with the last game in the Mega Man Legends spinoff now eight years old, this particular Rockman is destined to be Reborn for Wii.

As the picture above demonstrates, Camelot's We Love Golf will allow us to play a round as Apollo Justice, while other characters confirmed for the title include Chun Li (Street Fighter), Jill Valentine (Resident Evil 3), and Arthur (Ghouls 'n Ghosts). We can't comprehend how anybody would not want to play golf as Apollo Justice, but if you're not a fan of the bequiffed lawyer (weirdo), then Capcom has set up a poll on its official blog to ask readers which characters they'd most like to see in the U.S and European versions of the game.

You can vote for one female and one male character, with Cammy (Street Fighter), Morrigan (Darkstalkers), Rouge (Power Stone), Roll Caskett (Mega Man Legends), and Ashley Graham (Resident Evil) making up the female category.

Meanwhile, the male list consists of Frank West (Dead Rising), Balrog (Street Fighter), Guy (Final Fight), Ken (Street Fighter), Dhalsim (Street Fighter), and Captain Commando (from, uh, Captain Commando). And yes, we know of at least one person who will be sorely disappointed with the lack of Zangief in that selection.
Capcom lets you choose who loves Golf originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 10 Feb 2008 18:00:00 EST.
