'AOL is likely to shutter' Joystiq, reports Recode. Hey, wait a minute... that's us! Well, we may as well handle this the same way we've been covering the video game industry for ten years.

"We do not comment on rumor and speculation," one staffer told us, wishing to remain anonymous, preparing for their lucrative PR career. Others are still trying to figure out next steps. Another anonymous staffer said, "We're still working until we can't."

Sources tell Joystiq that the staff is aware of the closure, but corporate hasn't officially told them, so they are unable to acknowledge anything out of concern that it will cause immediate shutdown. We've reached out for more information. We will update, as we always have, when we know more.

Those that follow crowdfunded gaming projects know the drill: As most developers' Kickstarter deadlines draw near, they like to remind you to pledge your monetary support so their visions can come to life, enticing you to do so by offering concept art or videos. In the case of Frog Fractions developer Twinbeard, with a week left to go in its Frog Fractions 2 campaign, it opted to launch a brief adventure game called Kickstarter Simulator 2015.

Kickstarter Simulator 2015 is a browser-based "autobiographical game about running Kickstarters" that features videos of real-life friends of Frog Fractions creator Jim Crawford. Players click on the actors to keep them on track with the zany crowdfunding project so that it sees success a week from today. The point-and-click game is as quirky and hilarious as one might expect from Twinbeard, so it's worth checking out on the developer's site. The Frog Fractions 2 campaign is just under $9,000 away from its goal and ends on Wednesday, April 9.

As a character action game, it hits all the notes - fast, robust action, marvelous visual style, and a tremendous sense of attitude - you could want in this type of game."

Game Informer (90/100): "I'm impressed by the sheer variety of Dante's moveset. Three guns, two angelic weapons, two demonic weapons, and one sword have unique abilities that you purchase. Because some moves are more useful than others (I still love the Stinger/Trillion Stabs combo), you can refund any spent points at no cost, encouraging you to experiment with the possibilities."

IGN (89/100): "Long-time Devil May Cry fans unsure of Ninja Theory's treatment can abandon their fears. DmC hurls Dante into a newer, better world, complete with a glorious combat system and enough style to make old Dante proud. This is digital action at its finest, steeped in the blood of angels, spiced with gunpowder, and garnished with a middle finger."

Edge (80/100): "DmC has a greater emphasis on story than the games that preceded it, then, which is just what you'd expect from the maker of the narrative-heavy Enslaved and Heavenly Sword. But its focus is absolutely where it should be: at the tip of Dante's sword. Playing true to its forebears' considerable strengths, DmC is still a game about crowd management and of making best use of its myriad systems to keep a combo going and maximise your style rating."

GameSpot (80/100): "DmC succeeds both in its story and in its brilliant combat, and it looks the business too, despite a few minor glitches and the more color-soaked levels looking like they've spent a little too much time in an Instagram filter. Sure, you may baulk at Dante's trendy new haircut, or maybe even miss a little of that B-movie Devil May Cry insanity, but the heart of what makes the series so enticing and so much fun to play holds true here."

Metareview: DMC: Devil May Cry originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 15 Jan 2013 19:30:00 EST. While our scheduling makes it difficult for editors to see the same games as other staff (or every game at the show), a few heavy-hitters found their way to the top of our lists, including XCOM: Enemy Unknown and Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance. But if the variety of our favorite games list is any indication, there's no shortage of exciting experiences on the horizon.
Continue reading Joystiq's favorite games of E3 2012

Joystiq's favorite games of E3 2012 originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 11 Jun 2012 13:30:00 EST. Joystiq stands in solidarity with all the sites who are "blacking out" today in protest of the SOPA and PIPA bills ... or at least as much as we can stand in solidarity while continuing to post news. Let me explain.

We at Joystiq oppose the Stop Online Piracy Act -- as does our parent company AOL, who is part of a coalition who spoke out against the bill in a full-page NYT ad. In its present form, it gives control of the whole Internet to the same entertainment companies who frequently send erroneous DMCA complaints and takedown notices. It's dangerous and overreaching. Piracy is a problem, of course, but so is censorship -- and that's precisely what SOPA is. We aren't even sure it would have an effect on piracy (in fact, we know pirates are resourceful enough to get around it, meaning that censorship would be the only effect).

As journalists, we feel that the best thing we can do is to continue reporting, rather than to go silent. We'll continue informing you ... and not just about political issues that are important enough for us to be talking about them on a video game blog. About video games, too. It's what we do, as long as we still can. Our silence now could be as harmful as the forced silence we'd endure later under these laws.

If you're as concerned about this as we are -- if you use the Internet -- we urge you to contact Congress. If you're outside of the US, this affects you too, as the bill is targeted in part at "foreign sites." You can get in contact with the US State Department. You'll find forms for both of those here.
We're not 'blacking out' today (but we still don't like SOPA) originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 18 Jan 2012 08:55:00 EST. Confession time: As much as we like meeting you guys at reader meetups, the real benefit to us is that, for a brief time, we can reclaim some control over our home offices. "Too much swag" might be considered an enviable problem but we don't see it that way.

That's why we really need you to come out to Engadget's NYC Reader Meetup tomorrow, at Guastavino's, 344 E 59th Street in New York City. Of course, it's a free event but, knowing how much people like free things, you may want to get there early. We can only hold 1,000 people at a time so our recommendation is: Show up by 6:30 when the doors open. Festivities are going until 10:30 so if you can't make it until later, that's okay too, but it's first-come first-served.

Stay tuned to find out how we're going to part with our swag. Until then, you'll find more info on the meetup at Engadget. Normally, after E3, some clear "best games" emerge -- either the ones that everyone knew would be amazing going in, and did not disappoint on the floor, or the Scribblenauts-style surprises that dominated conversations online and in the press room. There's usually a general consensus among the Joystiq staff about a few standout games.

This year, however, when we compared notes and discussed our favorite games of the show over chicken and waffles, we found that every Joystiqer picked something different (there was more agreement when we asked the Massively staff to join in, but it makes sense for MMO fans to be in accord). We can't really say what that means, but it seems significant.

And so, rather than debate our way down to a few choices, we're just presenting each of our favorite games, individually. You want Joystiq's "Game of the Show"? It's ... all of these. We'd also like to call out Bloodrayne: Betrayal and Mass Effect 3, which came so close.
Continue reading Joystiq's favorite games of E3 2011

Joystiq's favorite games of E3 2011 originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 14 Jun 2011 15:45:00 EST. E3 2011 has officially wrapped, folks. And though we've still got a mess of content to blow out over the coming days, we wanted to remind you that we've got a reader meetup tonight in downtown Los Angeles, and we'd be really upset if you weren't there. Like, many, many tears. The most tears.

You know who else will be disappointed? The cadre of great game developers we've got coming by with their great games. From the just announced Dance Central sequel to the retro gaming menagerie of Retro City Rampage, you could be seriously missing out. So hey, if you're in the Los Angeles area this evening, you're over 21 (sorry! seriously! we know it's super lame!), and you want to play a bunch of great video games while hanging out with the editors of Joystiq, we'd suggest clearing the hours of 5:30 to 9:00PM.

Head past the break for the entire list of games and details of the event location. We, we, we so excited!
Continue reading Reminder: LA reader meetup is tonight! As the Joystiq staff barrels toward Los Angeles over the course of today, each staffer will come packing his own set of tools to tackle the coming week. As you already know, the E3 festivities begin Monday morning and go strong for four days, so it goes without saying that these gear pictures don't include the countless gallons of caffeinated beverages which will be consumed -- chock 1.5 iced coffees to me thus far today -- not to mention other precious energy-providing items.

Head into the gallery below for an in-depth look at how the sausage gets made. We're just as sad as you that you couldn't make it all the way to Boston's first ever PAX East, but we've got a whole bunch of pictures of the Joystiq Podcast trio (and the hundreds of people who showed up to the Manticore Theater this evening) for you right now ... live! The name says it all, really, what with it being the Game Developers Conference. That doesn't mean their aren't hot scoops to be found though. This year we got our first taste of the PlayStation Move, Deus Ex: Human Revolution and, of course, the hamster ball-inspired future of video games. Now, with GDC over and done, it's time for us to say goodbye. You'll see a few more GDC stories popping up over the next few days but, for now, watch the video above and see how the Joystiq team spent the week in San Francisco.
Joystiq vs. GDC 2010 originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 14 Mar 2010 11:30:00 EST. Were you aware that Folding@home (now called Life With PlayStation) isn't just an altruistic distributed computing network, but also a brutal team sport? It's true -- reader Chilly_Willy recently pointed our attention to Joystiq's ranking on the F@h leaderboard and reported the delightful news that Team 'Stiq is set to overtake fellow games media outlet G4TV within the next 24 hours. We received the news with dignity, knowing that rankings don't matter -- all we care about is contributing to the scientific community's fight against disease.

We're kidding, of course -- we're purely in this thing for the thrill of victory. In fact, it would be great if you guys could go turn on your PS3s and lend a hand in destroying G4. We want Adam Sessler and Morgan Webb to feel absolutely crushed with defeat at some point during the day, but not know why. We want to run into Olivia Munn and Kevin Pereira at PAX East, and have them be too afraid to make eye contact with us. Please, please, dear readers -- won't you help make our dream a reality?
Joystiq set to overtake G4 in Folding@home leaderboards tonight originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 08 Feb 2010 14:45:00 EST. If you're not already directing your eyeballs to our PC sister site Big Download for all your PC gaming news, well ... why not? Hmmm? That sounds like a personal problem, if you ask us. Joystiq admittedly went a little crazy with stories involving Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter recently. But, how can the internet blame us? The man is such an important figure. Not only to the video game industry, but to the current state of humanity. Inspired by Harmonix's Alex Navarro, the facts of Michael Pachter's importance were spoken across the Twitterverse and compiled by one Jared Newman. A small sampling:

When Michael Pachter gets the Red Ring of Death, he sends Microsoft a coffin.

Publications often misrepresent Michael Pachter as a "Wedbush Morgan Analyst." No company can contain Michael Pachter.

Michael Pachter willed the Dreamcast to its destruction. No one can cast dreams except Michael Pachter.

There is a little-known seventh ESRB rating: P. It stands for Pachter. P-rated games can only be played by the awesome.

Michael Pachter has learned to suppress the pon farr. He's that logical.

We hope these facts help clarify his importance. Those looking to learn more can always search Twitter for #pachterfacts. Some facts show a lack of refinement, created by jealous heathens, but many will bestow the importance of this one man. If you know more facts, please feel free to add them below. "You're lucky there aren't f**cking wooden benches in here. You can quote me on that!" With those words, ESA senior director of communication Dan Hewitt told Joystiq's own Richard Mitchell and Alexander Sliwinski -- in jest, we should strongly note -- exactly where they could put their handful of complaints about the lack of free soda and hot water for a cuppa tea in the press room. And considering the amount of stress the man at least partially responsible for this so-far seemingly successful E3 must be under, we can understand the response. After gabbing with us for a bit more, he noted with a smile, "Don't forget, wood benches, y'all!" Oh noes! Although we were thirsty, we were certainly thankful for our plush and soft leather couches.
Overheard@E3: ESA's Dan Hewitt thinks we should be happy with what we get originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 03 Jun 2009 23:00:00 EST. Mark the occasion: 11:10am E3 Time (that's 2:10pm Joystiq Time). The first Joystiq footsoldiers have touched down in LA, taken up defenses in a local Starbucks, and begun planning for coordinated pickups from the nearby LAX transportation facility. For the next five days, our highly trained video game Blog Force will infiltrate the Electronic Entertainment Expo, and surgically extract all the "scoops" and "hot stories" our rusty old internet trucks can possibly deliver back to you, Reader.

To that end, you'll want to make a note: for our fully optimized E3 experience, you can redirect your internet browser of choice to e3.joystiq.com where we're collecting not only all of Team Joystiq's stories, but also presenting stories from our colleagues at Engadget, Massively, Big Download, and GameDaily.

Let's go!
E3 2009: We're here! originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 31 May 2009 14:25:00 EST. Somewhere between co-creating Dungeons & Dragons and teaching at Full Sail College, Dave Arneson left an indelible mark on the gaming landscape. Every time we roll for initiative or challenge the dungeon master's ability to adapt, Arneson's guiding hand can be felt.

We've gathered sentiments shared by our colleagues around the internet for you here, and encourage you to share your thoughts in the comments section below, about the man that helped move role-playing into the limelight of gaming.

Ars Technica: "Get out your classic rule books. Invite some friends over. Keep a chair empty for a fallen friend, and play for a few hours. Not online, in person. Order a pizza ... Growing pains. With most of those nasty growing pains under control - after Monday night's relaunch of Joystiq, and rebranding of the DS and Wii Fanboy sites - we're happy to let you know that you can now filter Joystiq Nintendo for Wii or DS.

How does one do it? Easy, when you see a story on Joystiq Nintendo, you'll notice it will either have a Wii tab or a DS tab (sometimes both). All you have to do is click on that tab and you'll get everything sorted for that particular platform. Only want DS news? Well, then go ahead and bookmark this link. Only want the Wii stuff? Then bookmark this link. You can subscribe to either of those links in your favorite RSS reader and absorb the site that way as well. It's that easy. And if you don't want to be bothered with scrolling down the page, you'll notice the top now has a Wii and DS tab next to the Nintendo tab. Progress, ain't it grand?

When you're viewing the front page, you'll see these tabs sprinkled throughout posts; however, when you're sorting by each platform tag (DS or Wii), then you won't see those tabs (we think that makes sense). Let us know what you think in the comments below or head past the break for a guide on using the new tabs, if all of this still seems a bit over your head.

Now that 2008 has come to a close with both team X3F and the X3F community deciding the best games of 2008, we're feeling a little '08 nostalgic for some reason. Maybe we have an attachment disorder or are just in awe of how amazing 2008 was, but whatever the case, we wanted to revisit last year. So, we dug through the official X3F statistical library and uncovered the top fifteen most trafficked stories of 2008. All of which can be viewed in their news glory after the break.

According to the traffic reports, Rock Band, Call of Duty, Gears of War, Xbox hardware revisions and NXE Avatars were all the rage in '08. Interesting stuff. Oh how we miss you already 2008. You were good to all of us, even the bad fanboys. But now, we say goodbye and welcome 2009 into our hearts as we look forward to what gaming news is yet to come.
Continue reading X3F's top stories of 2008

X3F's top stories of 2008 originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 02 Jan 2009 17:45:00 EST.
Today is Thanksgiving in the United States, a national holiday when friends and family come together to gorge themselves, eat various poultry and pour on extra helpings of gravy. It being Thanksgiving also means you'll be seeing less news on X3F today (collective sigh ... ), because we'll be doing the whole family thing, taking it easy and doing a lot of gaming.

For our fanboy friends in Europe, Canada and every other worldly place that isn't the U.S., we wish you a very happy un-Thanksgiving and hope you get a chance to participate in today's overeating ritual. On behalf of all of us at X3F, have a wonderful Thanksgiving (or un-Thanksgiving) and be sure to find time to express your gratitude to your 360.
Continue reading It's Thanksgiving Day, now pass the gravy

It's Thanksgiving Day, now pass the gravy originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 27 Nov 2008 10:00:00 EST. That's why we're doing it again this year, partnering with our gentle overlords over at Joystiq for the second annual E3 Joystiq reader meetup in Santa Monica next week! At Mahalo's headquarters, no less!

The E3 reader meetup will feature plenty of social fun, free food and drinks, a bunch of video games to play (hooked up to a few very expensive projectors) and hundreds upon hundreds of pieces of swag will be given away. Over 200+ pounds of swag, ranging from video games to faceplates to peripherals to wearable swag. All being given away for FREE at the meetup! Though, we must admit, the most important reason you should attend is to meet the X3F crew. Yup, Richard and Dustin will both be in attendance along with a bunch of the Joystiq bloggers. Good times will be had!

Be a social butterfly, stop by Mahalo HQ next Thursday, mingle a bit, win some swag, get your game on, meet the blogging crew and smile from ear to ear. But for those who live within the U.S. borders, today is America's birthday, the day we refer to as Independence Day, the Fourth of July or (what we've come to call it) Firework Bonanza Day! Hopefully, those who are celebrating the country's birthday are among family and friends, are taking it easy (for those who have to work, we feel for you) and consuming all kinds of semi-charred grilled foods. And here's to hoping that the weather cooperates, allowing you to get outdoors, enjoy life outside the Xbox 360 and watch some fireworks. Though, if the weather or annoying family members prevent you from viewing the fireworks spectacle, we fully support your decision to use Boom Boom Rocket as a substitute. From all of us at X3F, have a fantastic July 4th where, tonight, we'll be making a s'more just for you.
Happy Fourth of July from X3F originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 04 Jul 2008 09:00:00 EST.
You can almost hear David Bowie singing around the realm of Azeroth lately: ch-ch-ch-ch-changes are in the air. Hopefully, you'll spend time with friends and family, eat yourself into a food coma, and maybe hunt for a colorful egg or two. We know we'll be out and about doing our Bunny Day traveling, but will also be sure to get a few solid hours of gaming in. And, really, that just may be the best plan. Hop onto Xbox Live, spread Bunny Day cheer and challenge your enemies to an egg-off (whatever that may be). In our eternal quest to bring our readers (that's you!) the latest and greatest in internet technologies (these tubes don't run themselves, after all), Xbox 360 Fanboy is proud to announce the arrival of our new and improved gallery system. Our new gallery system supports higher resolutions and allows users to leave comments on individual images. In the standard view, a low resolution image appears on the left side of the screen with the description on the right. But, if you click "Hi-Res" on the upper right, you'll be taken to the full resolution version of the image. Seriously, on a scale of one to ten, how cool is that? The change is retroactive to all of our previous galleries, so if you want to leave a comment about, say, our Game Fuel gallery, you can! Please enjoy our new gallery system, and look forward to more gallery content in the future. Check out the gallery below to see all the new features for yourself.

Hooray for new galleries! originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 05 Mar 2008 18:00:00 EST. To celebrate, we advise taking a stroll through Xbox.com's Valentine's coverage, spending some quality video game time with a loved one and eating heart shaped sugar cookies until your stomach aches with <strike>sugary pain</strike> love. We know we'll be celebrating (and spending lots of money) this Valentine's Day with our sweethearts as we promise to be the most caring, thoughtful and supportive bloggers we can be. We also promise, for at least today, to ease up a little on both Xav and Terrence, the new guys. Hopefully they know that both Richard and I constantly nag, ritually yell and make unfair demands only because we care and want them to succeed. Because, deep down, we love our Xav, Terrence and all of you that make the X3F community the best group of 360 supporters on the net. Happy Valentine's Day guys ... now let's gorge on chocolates!
Happy Valentine's Day from X3F originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 14 Feb 2008 12:00:00 EST. Both our main RSS news feed as well as the RSS Fancast feed (including both iTunes and the Zune Marketplace) should be working smoothly now, so be happy and go about your normal RSS activities. But if by chance we overlooked an issue or if you spot an RSS gnome lurking, please tell us about it and we'll work on a fix. Just DO NOT feed them chocolate, because you'll only create more headaches. Thanks for your patience and happy RSS'ing!
X3F RSS feed complications are now sorted out originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 06 Jan 2008 19:45:00 EST. Rest assured that we are aware of the problem and doing everything we can to fix it. Unfortunately, many people in the Joystiq network are still on holiday vacation, so it may be a while before a proper fix is in place. We are aware of it though. In the meantime, we apologize for all the extra work that goes into visiting our (fabulous) website in the traditional manner.

X3F am cry: RSS feed is down, fix on the way originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 28 Dec 2007 13:45:00 EST. Those of you that hang out on Joystiq should already have a pretty good idea of how it works, but here's a quick rundown.

Your comments will now feature your avatar image. If you haven't already set up an avatar, you can do so by clicking your user name in any of your comments. This will take you to a profile page where you can log in with your password (which can be found in comment confirmation emails if you don't already have one). Here you can edit some personal info and upload an avatar.

Comments can now be voted up or down. Positively rated comments will become more visible, while negatively rated comments will become less visible. See a thoughtful, well-written comment? Vote it up! Do you see a hateful, irrelevant piece of garbage that should be expunged from all the internets? Vote that sucker down! You can also report comments that may be inappropriate.

Finally, you can now reply directly to individual comments, which will make conversations (and flame wars) flow much more naturally.

There you have it folks, a comment system with personality, flair, and usability. Enjoy. Oh, and feel free to ask questions about the new system (or just try it out) on this post.
Hooray for a new comment system! originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 27 Nov 2007 15:30:00 EST. This will be our first meetup EVAR, so we want to make it extra special for those who attend. There will be free food and drinks, and the first to show up will receive free Joystiq T-shirts. Not only that but we'll be giving away lots of spiffy swag that we've accumulated this week. If you've got the time, we'd love to see you there. It's an all ages event, so don't hesitate to bring the tykes.

When: 6PM-9PM on Friday 13th
Where: Mahalo HQ, 902 Colorado Ave. Santa Monica 90401 (Google Maps link)

In case you've already seen this post, we'll be moving it up throughout the day so we can get the word out.
