NeoGAF poster Ephemeris snapped the photo above showing that Metal Gear Solid 4 auteur Hideo Kojima will be at the Virgin MegaStore in Times Square NYC on June 11, signing copies of the game for a midnight launch. We contacted the Virgin MegaStore's games department this morning just to confirm. The conversation went like this:

"Hi, I just wanted to confirm Hideo Kojima would be signing copies of Metal Gear Solid 4 at the store on June 11?"

"Who?" The clerk sounded half-asleep.

"Hi-de-o Ko-ji-ma, Metal Gear Solid 4, in store June 11?"

"Um, yeah, we're doin' that. Sure."

We're just curious to see if Kojima does a mega-signing in Japan for the opening there and then bends time backwards (by crossing the date line) to get to New York. That would be hardcore.

[Via PS3 Fanboy]
Hideo Kojima signing MGS4 at Virgin MegaStore in Times Square June 11 originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 23 May 2008 11:29:00 EST. Last week the crew finished part one which took us back twenty years to the old school games without the "Solid" added on. This week they're taking a look back on the first Metal Gear Solid which made its debut on the PlayStation One.

The Twin Snakes GameCube remake of MGS1 is also glanced at, as well as those memorable (and excruciatingly difficult) missions from VR Missions. Next week should be equally fun as MGS2 (this blogger's personal favorite) will be the next part in the retrospective.
GameTrailer's Metal Gear Retrospective Part 2: Metal Gear Solid originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 17 May 2008 21:30:00 EST. The Metal Gear Solid 4 hype machine seems to have kicked into full gear these past couple of days. MGS4 news has seemingly plastered our blogging wall daily with flash games, peripherals, and more gameplay news. This time, we're continuing the coverage with these new screenshots that look distinctly different from what we've seen before.

Most of the previous MGS4 screenshots depict the center of wasted Middle Eastern city. These new screens, however, show a bit of grassland and rocky terrain as well as some indoor shots, too. There's even a shot of Snake controlling Mk. II with a DualShock 3. The picture above suggests you'll be tracking down your stats such as Headshots and CQC take downs. Most interesting is the "flashbacks viewed" stat. Does this mean there will be several playable flashbacks to previous MGS games ... like this one of Shadow Moses?
MGS4 screens show new terrain, hint at flashbacks originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 16 May 2008 15:30:00 EST. Well, above is the movie-style trailer (with movie-voice guy) for those interested in watching it. No pressure. Watch it, don't watch it. We wish there was more we could do to generate hype for this indie title made in some guy named Hijeo Koshima Hideo Kojima's garage on a shoe-string budget.

After the break you'll find three ads involving MGS4. It's really nice to see Sony taking an interest in this title. It warms our cockles to see a giant corporation give support to a game featuring geriatrics at war.
Continue reading MGS4 ads: Evil is powerful, but courage is Solid

MGS4 ads: Evil is powerful, but courage is Solid originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 14 May 2008 04:00:00 EST. Well, guess it turns out that Europe is getting a Metal Gear Solid 4 bundle after all. The only drawback is that this bundle doesn't include a DualShock 3 (SIXAXIS only) unlike the recently revealed Japanese "welcome boxes" and North America's own bundle. While we've been ogling over the Limited Edition packaging of Metal Gear Solid 4, PlayStation.Blog confirms that the Gun Metal Limited Edition bundle will be heading to North America as well. The site wrote, "We are confirming that there will be a North America offering of this very, very Limited Edition bundle!" The Gun Metal PS3 bundle is the very same one that quickly sold out over at Konami's Japanese site. Further details such as price have not been revealed.

Well there you have it folks. You now have four ways of splurging on MGS4. Pretty isn't it? The Metal Gear Solid 4 artwork on both earpieces really do give these wireless Sony 7.1-channel MDR-DS7000 headphones an extra stylistic edge. Want to know how you can score a pair? Well, it's not going to be easy that's for sure.

These babies are going to be given away randomly to 30 lucky shoppers who purchase any one of the MGS4 bundles on Konami's Japanese online store. So unless you've got connections somewhere in Japan and extreme luck on your side, chances are your closest look at these beauties is in this posting. However, a recent interview with series creator Hideo Kojima revealed a startling fact about MGS4 -- Kojima complained that a few features had to be cut from the game so it would fit on a Blu-ray disc. As format fanatics already know, that means the game takes up nearly 50 gigabytes of space.

If true, this is bad news for anyone who hoped to see anthropomorphic cow-bots on the 360 (unless that data was divided between about five dual-layer DVDs), but it could also mean a painfully long installation time for PS3 owners as well. We can only imagine that 49 of those gigabytes are taken up by thousands of variations on just three lines of dialogue -- "Snake? SNAKE? SNAAAAAAAAAAAAAKE!?"

[Thanks, Beau Kebodeaux]
Kojima: MGS4 too big for 50 GB Blu-ray disc originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 02 Mar 2008 20:30:00 EST. With all the MGS4 news flying around this week, unveiling the game's official Japanese box art was only the natural next step. You could even say it had "no place to hide." Oh my, enough of the horrible puns.

The Japanese box art seems a little bit drab compared to it's predecessors; we wonder if the US box art is going to be a whole lot snazzier. A headshot of Snake is nice, but we'd love to see Liquid Ocelot too; and of course, Raiden -- because we just know how much you all love Raiden. But seriously, this artwork is a nice way to salute the aged Snake ... or maybe it's just a fun way to show off his saucy mustache.
MGS4 Japanese box art unveiled originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 28 Feb 2008 13:30:00 EST.
Over at the NeoGAF forums, a member posted a supposed Metal Gear Solid 4 advertisement from Famitsu magazine. In the ad, it clearly states a release date that reads "2008.06.12". It's most likely this date is for June 12; however, other members have confirmed this magazine scan is a fake.

Despite being proven an ad that doesn't even appear in the Famitsu issue in question, this rumor does pique our interests as anything MGS-related would. A release date for June 12 does sound reasonable, since MGS4 shouldn't miss its Q2 2008 schedule. So while fake, it's a fair estimate for a release. Just don't get your hopes up if you see this ad floating around elsewhere.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in!]

[Update: This isn't real. Sorry, folks. It's a confirmed Photoshop job, as stated in the NeoGAF forum.]
Rumor: MGS4 leaked release date? As fun as it's been to dream about the vague, but imminent peril hinted at by Metal Gear Solid 4 assistant producer Ryan Payton when he allegedly told Reuters that the game must sell over a million copies on day one (or else...?), it's time to wake up -- all bets are off! Speaking on the Bionic Commando podcast, Payton denied ever quoting the ominous figure, admitting, "I don't even know how many figures we'd need to sell to be profitable." (Figures? Aren't we talking about game sales?)

"More importantly, that's not something you really talk about in an interview," Payton continued, "I've been trying to contact Kemp Powers over at Reuters to see, I don't know, if he recorded it on tape, but I'd love to hear it. So we can set the record straight." Well Payton, consider the record straighted with us. (This whole thing never made much sense anyway ... What if it took two days to break a million -- then what?)

[Via PS3 Fanboy]
MGS4 doesn't need 1m day one sales, Payton misquoted originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 08 Feb 2008 11:40:00 EST. We know the news of Metal Gear Solid 4's delay has you down. Hell, you should see the bar tab we rung up after the announcement. Although we'd like to believe we're the most important people to be affected by it, that simply isn't the case. Konami's investors definitely take the cake this time, as they witnessed the company's shares fall 6.8% today, their biggest drop in four years.

You'd have to go back to a year when people still remotely cared about The Matrix Trilogy (2003) to find as large a drop for Konami. According to an analyst Bloomberg spoke with, investors "were active sellers today because of disappointment over the delay." On the bright side, at least spurned gamers aren't liquidating their pre-order portfolio.
Metal Gear Solid 4 delay causes Konami stock price to fall originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 01 Nov 2007 12:08:00 EST. Do you have a comfortable chair? Do you have a refreshing beverage? If so, it's high time that you snuggle in and prepare yourself for an approximately 12-minute long demo of Metal Gear Solid 4 in English. Just a warning, the player of the demo occasionally blows through some of the dialog when it goes on a bit too long. Wow, it's just like you're playing at home!

Speaking of which, if you want to grab a controller and pretend like you're playing, we won't tell anyone. The demo starts with the first part above, and then continues below the jump. Enjoy.
Continue reading See Metal Gear Solid 4 demo in English

See Metal Gear Solid 4 demo in English originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 23 Oct 2007 11:00:00 EST.
While E For All may have been sparsely attended, we did manage to catch up with a few notables while we dodged tumbleweeds and worked our way through the cavernous South Hall. Konami's booth with its Metal Gear Solid 4 demo easily had the longest line, which kept some of the attendees behind barbed wire fences until they were treated to a lucky 15 minutes of glory.

So, we decided to sit down with one of the men behind the game. Namely, Konami's Ryan Payton, who has the enviable position of being one of the Assistant Producers on MGS4. He is also one of the extremely few Westerners working on this title. Mind you, he is fluent in Japanese and is currently living over there, which certainly makes things a bit easier. Check out our interview with him about the game after the break.

Gallery: E for All 2007

Do you remember when your fake ID couldn't fool the bouncer, leaving you outside sober, cold, and distanced from the girl you were looking to at least play ball with? That's kind of how we're feeling right now, after learning on the latest Kojima Productions podcast that there are no plans to bring a demo of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots to the PlayStation Store prior to launch.

Host Ryan Payton stated: "I can tell you, as of right now, we don't have any plans of uploading this demo on the PlayStation Store." And definitely, he added, no plans of "uploading [on PSN] next week." His statements were echoed by Konami's new flak master, Michael Shelling, adding "[E for All] is going to be your one chance to actually play it prior to it launching next year."

Yeah, while this news is certainly a crushing blow to the Metal Gear Solid fan base (many of which help run Joystiq), there was at least a little positive news: Shelling revealed that Konami has gone gold with Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops+, and is planning to release the game on November 13. That's a little antiseptic to the wound, no?
MGS Portable Ops+ gets dated, no MGS4 PSN demo originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 18 Oct 2007 12:23:00 EST. Sure, he talks about some of the Western influences on the game and some of the nuances of Metal Gear Online, but he also gives up the details you crave on monkey in a diaper and his buddy Sisqo/Demolition Man-era Wesley snipes.

As Payton is quick to correct, it's a monkey in pants (boo!) whose taken on a larger role in the game (yay!) as development has progressed. That doesn't rule out making more cinema once the game is completed, but don't expect that anytime soon.

The nine trailers, for those keeping track, encompass three E3 Expos, three Tokyo Game Shows, two Leipzig Games Conventions and a Metal Gear 20th Anniversary Party. It should be noted, as Totilo observes, that one of the videos wasn't a trailer so much as it was 15 minutes of Hideo Kojima playing the in-progress game.
Kojima Productions is done with MGS4 trailers, for now originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 28 Sep 2007 17:00:00 EST. After the big trailer finally played (it had trouble the other day due to some technical errors), a rabid fan asked Kojima about the opening and closing tracks for the game. Kojima, not quite sure what the person was asking, shot out a tease answer anyway, "I almost slipped, but there might be a special feature where maybe you can play your own favorite tunes."

Now, we're about 85% sure that he meant an option to play all the tracks from the game would be unlockable, but he did say our own favorite tunes. Since Kojima has a lot of fun making his games, who's to say Snake won't come across an MP3 Player on his journey that just so happens to be full of your favorite songs? Snake can rock out while hiding in a barrel, we guess. What do you guys think? Misinterpretation, or a hint at things to come?
Kojima implies music customization in MGS4 originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 23 Aug 2007 12:15:00 EST. After his Leipzig presentation, Hideo Kojima took some time to answer some questions from the audience. When asked if Metal Gear Online will be separate from the main MGS4 game, he answered: "When you play story mode you will be able to go online and it will have extra stuff at the end. Haven't decided whether it will be separate or not, but if you buy MGS4 you can play a portion of online at least."

When asked about rumble, Kojima-san told a tale of woe: "In Kojima Productions there is a man, we call him The Rumble Guy, and he has nothing to do right now. So every day I worry about him. I want to include Rumble so that he has something to do." Please Sony! Give The Rumble Guy something to do!

Finally, when asked about a 360 version, he reconfirmed what we knew all along: "Right now it's only being made for PS3. No plans for 360 for now." The Kojima Productions Press conference at Leipzig today ended with a Q&A session between the press and Kojima-san and his cohorts. The following is a summary of the questions and responses and covers Metal Gear Online, Metal Gear Solid 4 plans for the 360 and more.

Will Metal Gear Online be separate from MGS4 or will it be included?

Hard to explain. When you play story mode you will be able to go online and it will have extra stuff at the end.
Haven't decided whether it will be separate or not, but if you buy MGS4 you can play a portion of online at least. The worlds of MGS4 and MGO are very similar and they want consistencies between them. Final discussions haven't been made yet.
Continue reading LGC07: Metal Gear Solid Press Conference Q&A with Kojima

LGC07: Metal Gear Solid Press Conference Q&A with Kojima originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 23 Aug 2007 09:00:00 EST. Hideo Kojima whipped out his Genius-to-English dictionary again today in order to address the press at the Leipzig Games Conference personally, rather than through a translator. Showing off a new video, he introduced us to Metal Gear Solid 4's boss characters. After a short video showing all the bosses from past Metal Gear Solid games, Kojima asked us "but how can you improve on these? Let me show you."

What followed was a spine-tingling in-game video showcasing each of the new bosses for the upcoming title. They come in the form of beautiful women transformed by a brutal war into sick, metallic beasts. A tentacle-wielding creature with a cruel laugh. A giant silver wolf with an echoing howl. A creature with wings and a jetpack, constantly screaming "rage!" and a floating puppeteer, complete with attached marionettes. All of them twisted, mechanical beasts.

Keeping with the "Beauty and the Beast" theme, Kojima modeled these boss characters and their movements off of "real world beauties", one of whom, Yumi Kikuchi, stepped up on stage to declare how happy she is to be in the game -- and how much she loves Leipzig, naturally.

Our anticipation for this game is at its highest yet. Q1 2008 can't come quick enough.
Continue reading LGC07: Kojima-san introduces Metal Gear Solid 4's boss characters

LGC07: Kojima-san introduces Metal Gear Solid 4's boss characters originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 23 Aug 2007 08:30:00 EST. Though you've seen the first half of this video before, we think the second half will be pretty eye-opening.

We think you'd probably remember it if you'd seen scary metal dog in previous trailers, ditto for Lady Doctor Octopus, Flying Doctor Octopus and the guy who loves rage. Interested in seeing a new trailer for Metal Gear Solid 4? So were many in attendance at Konami's press conference during the Leipzig Games Convention. Unfortunately, as 1UP reports, technical glitches concerning the audio led to the publisher shutting down the trailer. "We apparently missed the important half -- everything we saw so far was just repeated from prior trailers," said 1UP.

As previously noted, Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima is holding a separate press conference tomorrow. With any luck, Solid Snake will be in better shape tomorrow. We hear at his age, he has good days and bad days.
LGC07: New MGS4 trailer borked originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 22 Aug 2007 18:26:00 EST. The Konami press conference at Leipzig was supposed to feature a brand-new trailer for Metal Gear Solid 4. The crowd, jittery in anticipation, shivered as they saw the opening moments of Kojima's latest ... and were shocked to hear the audio start fading away -- and the video, gone. Konami pulled the plug due to "technical difficulties." Now, the trailer is being rescheduled for tomorrow, to satiate the bloodthirsty crowd.

At the very least, Europe knows that Kojima is aiming for a simultaneous release for its upcoming PS3-exclusive. "In the past, I felt bad that the European versions of Metal Gear were always last. I can confidently say that we aim to have a simultaneous worldwide release with Metal Gear Solid 4."
New Metal Gear trailer dies during Leipzig originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 22 Aug 2007 11:00:00 EST. Before showing off Metal Gear Solid 4 live for the first time outside of Japan, Kojima-san got up in front of the entire Konami press conference in Leipzig and had a bit of a heart-to-heart with the audience. In English. He said that despite his busy schedule he was very happy to be back at the Game Conference here in Germany. Along with E3 and the Tokyo Game Show, he considers the Leipzig convention to be a central show for the industry.

His love for Europe doesn't stop there. Kojima-san went over to lament the fact that games are constantly released late over here. He is determined to make Metal Gear Solid 4 a simultaneous worldwide release for all regions, Japan, the US and Europe. There's more Metal Gear Solid news to come tomorrow when Kojima-san hosts a separate press conference himself. We'll be there to let you know what's new.
LGC07: Kojima hearts Europe, wants simultaneous worldwide MGS4 release originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 22 Aug 2007 10:10:00 EST. Yesterday, HMV started taking pre-orders for a yet to be announced (or even confirmed) Xbox 360 version of MGS 4, which in turn caused a lot of fanboy arguing and excitement that a retailer was actually acknowledging the game's existence on the 360. But fanboys, it was all a mistake. This morning GamesIndustry.biz caught up with the UK retailer to talk about the MGS 4 listing when HMV admitted that the pre-order page was created in error saying that,

"In his enthusiasm, one of our online games team indicated that hmv.co.uk would start taking pre-orders for MGS4 on Xbox 360, when, in fact, he simply meant to ask customers if they wished to receive an alert in the event of this title one day coming out on this platform."

So, there you have it. It was a simple admin mistake and now we know that the retailer didn't have any insider's information. We guess it's time to restart our countdown clock and wait patiently until the next "MGS 4 is so headed to the 360" rumor surfaces. We'll give it another two days.
HMV's Xbox 360 MGS 4 listing was a mistake originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 06 Aug 2007 10:15:00 EST. That's right, HMV is offering a preorder on the Xbox 360 version of MGS 4 without any official confirmation or announcement from Konami about the franchise heading to Xbox-land. So, they either know something we don't or they're just a tad confused. Though, it's interesting to note that they have the release date set at September 26th for the 360 version, which is five months after the PS3 version drops (according to their release dates). So, in theory, that would make sense according to the OXM confirmation rumor we heard a few weeks back.

More rumors, more information, more confusion and no concrete answers. This MGS 4 coming to the 360 rumor mill is quite the soap opera, but a good soap opera at that.

Update 1: It was a mistake! Information from Konami's financial analyst meeting suggests that Metal Gear Solid 4 will "likely" be coming out in March of 2008 and that a specific date will be announced at TGS later this year. This is about in line with what we had previously guessed/assumed after the E3 announcement of a MGS4 delay, but the idea of a solid official release date is pretty exciting.

And since it wouldn't be a MGS4 article without stirring up the ridiculous 'OMGZ MGS4 360' hornets nest, the president of Konami also mentioned that they may take the Metal Gear Solid franchise multiplatform some point in the future. It's worth noting that he said FRANCHISE, and not Metal Gear Solid 4. And considering Konami has taken the MGS series to non-Sony platforms before, it's not a huge surprise. So yeah ... MGS4 still isn't coming to the 360, and PS3 owners will be very very happy come next March.
MGS4 in March '08? Ah, of course! She was the femme fatale of MGS3. We'll save the remainder of the spoilers of her character for you, but the one thing you should know is that she isn't young, as she fought alongside Solid Snake's predecessor in the third title (everybody now, who is Snake's predecessor? Yes, it's a pop quiz). With that in mind, Konami has released a few shots of Eva to let you know that she's still alive and doing fairly well. Just a bit wrinkly around the edges, which is just fine considering the, you know, marching of time.

Even so, she looks younger than Solid Snake. How did he age so greatly, leaving people like Meryl and Otacon to look almost childish in comparison? Questions to be answered in the game, we suppose. In any case, a bunch of Metal Gear news popped up today, so this is just a taste of everything that's been announced. More on the way, we're sure.
Metal Gear Solid 4 shows off Eva -- Snake didn't age alone originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 24 Jul 2007 12:10:00 EST.
Wait ... there's actual gameplay in Metal Gear Solid 4? The beautiful cinematic trailers left us perfectly content with watching the game. However, after watching Kojima's walkthrough of the game, we'll be pretty cool with actually having to play the game as well.

Of particular focus is the new camouflage system, where Snake can turn into a statue, or blend in with the floor. Also, you may notice a far more intelligent camera system in this latest iteration of the Metal Gear series: it follows Snake, behind the back, and will jump into an over-the-shoulder view for aiming.

We're glad to say the game looks good. Not just graphically, but it looks to play very well. Certainly, we weren't expecting anything less from Kojima Productions. PS3 owners will have a lot to look forward to when this exclusive arrives next year.

Kojima walks us through MGS4 gameplay originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 24 Jul 2007 11:05:00 EST. A reliable tipster has whispered in X3F's ear that the Rumor Mole section in the latest issue of OXM claims a "bankable source" confirmed that Metal Gear Solid 4 would be coming to the Xbox 360 "a few months" after the PS3 version. Of course, there have been dozens of rumors insisting this will be the case, but the "Official Xbox Magazine" carries some weight.

Last week, Konami executive Kazumi Kitaue said, "Since Metal Gear Solid was born for the PlayStation, we would like to keep it a PlayStation game. But we might have to take some steps," igniting renewed speculation that the title would, in fact, be coming to Microsoft's console. Obviously, an announcement wasn't made at E3 last week ... perhaps TGS07?
MGS4 on Xbox 360 'a few months' after PS3, says OXM Rumor Mole originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 19 Jul 2007 18:54:00 EST. It turned out to be Silent Hill 5 (which is actually bigger news for some people). Still, a good rumor never dies (and a great rumor comes true). While the MGS4 360 rumor has yet to come true, a reliable tipster tells us that Official Xbox Magazine has taken it upon themselves to toss another log on the fire. In the most recent Rumor Mole section, OXM declares that a "bankable source" told them that Metal Gear Solid 4 is definitely coming to Xbox 360. The game is reportedly being ported by a separate team -- which isn't headed by Hideo Kojima -- and should ship "a few months" after the PS3 version.

Considering the ever-mounting rumors and Konami's own comments on the matter, it's starting to look like the only thing missing is an official announcement.

[Thanks, Steve Gannon]
OXM rumor: MGS4 on 360 a few months after PS3 originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 19 Jul 2007 16:30:00 EST.
