According to Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick, the unemployment rate for veterans is 21% higher than the rate for all Americans, with over a half-million veterans unemployed.

If you're looking to sneak into the concert, the event will be held November 4 at Santa Monica Airport's Hangar 8 ... though sneaking into an airport hangar post 9/11 is about as sure a way we know of to get yourself locked up. Also, that's very close to the location of that horrific Min-E3 of 2007 -- a memory that will haunt our dreams more than Nazi Zombies ever could.

As Kiss' Gene Simmons proclaimed earlier this year, it seems he'll be emceeing the game. Alongside his appearance, Queen, Black Sabbath and Metallica's Lars Ulrich will also be showing up, though rather than being featured as playable characters, the various rockers will be recruitable characters for guidance through the game's campaign ("Quest Mode") -- that whole multiple lawsuit thing certainly couldn't have hurt Activision's decision, right?

Maybe most important of all is the inclusion of legendary New York City club CBGB (& OMFUG) as the game's "only real-world location" (at least to this former CBGB attendee), but we suppose you're probably more interested in hearing that "previous DLC" will allegedly be playable in number six ... or whatever. Activision wouldn't confirm the details with us, but you OXM UK subscribers are welcome to re-confirm the report's legitimacy in our comments section below.

The new edition also sports some added functionality over its regular ol' boring Tap Tap Revenge counterparts: Aside from the usual career mode, there's now a more fast-paced arcade mode where players are "challenged with bombs and other special objects" and a new Bluetooth battle mode that lets players challenge others -- granted you're within the appropriate distance of each other -- to see who's the better iPhone-screen-poker.

For those diehard Metallica fans who aren't satisfied with an entire game themed around the band, the title also has other features that allow one to stalk be more in tune (sorry!) with the band's current activities -- including a news ticker and a live message board.

According to an Activision Blizzard press release, we won't be seeing more Heidi Klum in ads for upcoming Guitar Hero: Metallica, as the company has revealed a new advertising campaign focusing on college basketball coaches. In an attempt to capitalize on all of this March Madness hoopla, the new ad features four famous college basketball coaches (from left to right: Roy Williams, Rick Pitino, Bob Knight, and Mike "Coach K" Krzyzewski) and their "surprise encounter" with Metallica. As you can tell from the image above, the new ad will continue the Risky Business theme, but includes a surprise ending where we see all all four coaches walking home through the snow, uphill, with no shoes on. If you've got $59.99 lying around (or $49.99 for the Wii version, $39.99 for the PS2), you can simulate "riding the lightning"* with unparalleled accuracy.

*Warning: Riding lightning can lead to unintended health consequences in the groin region, including serious unsightly burns and impotence. Consult your doctor before deciding to mount any arcs of electricity.

Update: The PS2 version isn't actually dropping until Sunday, May 24 -- meaning Activision is effectively tainting two of 2009's Sabbath days with a touch of unholy metal.

Which, as we found, starts out by having you play a couple of songs by the metal legends then becoming so inspired that you start your own band (who you play the games non-Metallica songs as).

Some conspiracists might insist that the error is intentional, enforced by Metallica (take note: "Metallica" is spelled correctly), which secretly despises Skynyrd's musical success and demanded humiliation in the form of a misspelling. Seriously? No, that can't be it. Chalk up this mistake to poor proofing. (On a side note: we're petitioning to have "Lynyrd Skynyrd" introduced into the Scripps National Spelling Bee -- it's a tough one!)

It looks like we might get our wish: Guitar Hero: Metallica will consist mostly of songs from the band's first five albums, with only eleven post-1991 tracks appearing. Metallica's official site has leaked the full track list, which also contains twenty songs from artists such as Queen, System of a Down, Slayer, Motörhead, and Thin Lizzy. You can view the full line-up past the break.

Also, some less-than-great news: the release of the Wii version is set to lag behind the competition. Whereas the Xbox 360 and PS3 will be ready for March 29, Metallica themselves (or whoever writes on the website pretending to be the band) say we can expect the game "in the Spring, most likely in early May." Sad But True, indeed.

Up until now, we've been uncertain about what tracks would be appearing on Guitar Hero: Metallica -- though the educated guessers among us presumed that it would have quite a few tracks by its titular band. They were correct -- the news section on Metallica's official site recently revealed the 28 tracks the rock outfit would be contributing to the game (PS2 and Wii versions will include three extra songs in lieu of access to the band's Death Magnetic DLC pack), as well as the extra tracks from "some of the bands we admire and even call friends."

The ESRB just rated Guitar Hero Metallica, and in its synopsis gave away lyrics to four of the songs that would appear in the game. Thanks to Game Informer, we knew about the presence of "Armed and Ready" by MSG, but Destructoid discovered three fresh specimens:
  • "Am I Evil?" by Metallica
  • "Whiplash" by Metallica
  • "Mommy's Little Monster" by Social Distortion
Some of the lyrics that the ESRB pointed out include "sweet and timely whore, take me home" and "We're gathered here to maim and kill." My, they are terribly rock 'n roll, aren't they? Also CONFIRMED: one of the selectable guitarists is "a fantastical succubus with cleavage and panties."

A listing for upcoming Guitar Hero: Metallica has popped up on GameStop, along with an interesting bonus for pre-ordering the game. According to the site, the game will include a bonus drum pedal, along with a splitter, which will allow would-be rockers to drum with dual pedals if you order early. You know, just like Lars Ulrich.

The listing is for the Xbox 360 version of the game, but it's a safe bet to expect this for Wii. It's a multiplatform game after all and if one version is going to offer dual pedals, we doubt it would be excluded from the other versions and a bonus exclusive to the Xbox.

There's a thick cloud of fear hanging over fans of faux-drumming in games like Rock Band and Guitar Hero: World Tour -- fear inspired by the near-impossible rhythms which will need to be kept when Guitar Hero: Metallica hits store shelves. We're not sure how familiar you guys are with the speed with which Mr. Ulrich is capable of producing percussion, but we assure you, his work will be most unpleasant to attempt to mimic.

Thankfully, an uncharacteristically useful pre-order bonus from GameStop will give the game's quick-to-act reservers an extra bass drum pedal and input splitter. This will allow the player to use both pedals to tackle the game's more heel-punishing tracks. It's certainly a better option than splitting your foot down the middle, and training yourself to control both halves independently, which, now that we think about it, would be pretty rock-and-roll.

It's not just a rumor anymore, metal-heads. The official release date for Guitar Hero: Metallica has been announced. The game will be launching in North America on March 29 and will release in other regions sometime in May. So, start preparing your fingers for the inevitable calluses and start drinking all the Red Bull you can stomach, because Guitar Hero: Metallica is going to be hard. With 28 Mettalica tracks and plenty of guest artists, it's not a game for lightweights. No, you'll need to be a serious fake musician if you want to hang with the big boys. What you do with your fake groupies, well, that's up to you.

Heavy metal icons Metallica have let the black cat out of the bag. Guitar Hero: Metallica is coming to North America March 29th for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, and the rest of the world sometime in May. The PS2 and Wii versions are coming this Spring, "also most likely in early May," according to the band's website.

For those who need a little reminder, this is Guitar Hero ... with Metallica. Oh, and there's "expert-plus" drums. The game includes 28 songs from the group's discography, as well as tracks from Alice in Chains, the Foo Fighters, Slayer, Machine Head, and Queen (as in Freddie Mercury, not of the Stone Age variety). Once again, GameStop has fuelled release rumors by posting a North American launch date for Guitar Hero: Metallica: March 29 is the date you'll want to circle (lightly, in pencil) on your Lars 2009 calendars.

Though that's obviously not a confirmed date, it is a plausible one. "March 29" is a little too random to be a placeholder date, and is also a Sunday, a popular release day for big-name titles. Even if the franchise has reached the peak of its popularity, we still feel pretty confident about calling Guitar Hero: Metallica "big-name."

Meanwhile, Activision had no qualms about revealing release details for Europe, informing Eurogamer that the game would reach the region in May.

Last week, Metallica posted the first trailer for Buy Another Guitar Hero: This Time With Metallica Songs Guitar Hero: Metallica on its official site. The quality was dubious but the message was suitably loud and clear: you will "ride the lightning" in 2009. And, by "ride the lightning," we of course mean "press buttons on a plastic guitar and Metallica songs will happen."

Activision-Blizzard, having evidently accepted the game's existence at long last, today released a more watchable version of the teaser. That's what you'll see when you press "play" above. What you won't see is much of the game outside of some in-engine concert footage of the band performing and looking all ... Metallica-ic.

Well, we've certainly been talking about it for awhile now and finally it's made official. Guitar Hero: Metallica has dished out its first trailer and, well, it's definitely something. The trailer promises the band's "fiercest songs," which we hope means "tunes from the first 5 albums." You know, when Metallica was good.

Of course, with this being Metallica and all, we can't embed the video past the break. Lars would cry, or something. So hit up this link to watch it. Oh, and a word of caution: Hetfield looks like a mutant in the game and there's an overabundance of lens flare in the trailer. Enjoy!

So what if the Metallica edition of Guitar Hero still hasn't been officially announced? The band itself has been talking about it all willy-nilly; it's been in Game Informer; there was even a teaser in Guitar Hero World Tour. And now ... well, the trailer is out. Not from its publisher, Activision, but on the band's website.

Perhaps some fine print in the band's contract stipulates that it gets to handle the PR for the game. Perhaps the mere mention of the game is being considered an "exclusive," since it's "unannounced." Perhaps it's time for a press release already.

We may have known about the first tracks and gameplay features for upcoming Guitar Hero: Metallica, but when is it going to release? Well, according to a report by USA Today, Metallica says we should expect it early next year. Also, you'll be playing as a band that emulates Metallica, following them around and playing their songs. Maybe this should be called Guitar Hero: Crazy Bunch of Stalkers instead?

So, who's looking forward to this?

We all knew it was coming, but now Guitar Hero: Metallica is 100% official. Speaking to USA today, Neversoft's Alan Flores and Metallica's Lars Ulrich and Kirk Hammett discussed the game and some of its features. The story of the game is that players are members of a band that tours with Metallica, covering its songs at different venues. Neversoft decided that the game couldn't work chronologically, as Metallica's early work would be far too difficult at the beginning of the game. Concerning difficulty, Flores says that the game will be "a lot harder" than previous Guitar Hero games, and is aimed squarely at hardcore players. So then, should we just give up now?

The game should arrive early next year, with Ulrich specifically mentioning March.

It's a Christmas miracle! Someone's actually admitting out loud that Guitar Hero: Metallica exists! The band spilled a ton of details to USA Today, including word on the game's difficulty (considerable) and the story, which casts you as a band, inspired by Metallica, following them around the world and playing their songs. It's a strange structure, but the reasoning (the band's early work would have been far too hard, ruling out a chronological approach) seems pretty sound.

We imagine there will be very few of you on the fence, so we have to ask: When Guitar Hero: Metallica arrives early next year, will you be picking it up?

The worst-kept secret in music games just became ... worse kept? The ScoreHero forums are abuzz over what are, for now, supposedly new details on Guitar Hero: Metallica from the latest issue of Game Informer magazine.

The stand-alone game is said to support GH World Tour's drum kit, including dual kick pedals, which will come into play for a new "expert plus" difficulty. Other features are said to include DVD-style bonus videos and extras; a "drum fill" mode for free-styling with Metallica drum sounds; factoid-laden, Pop-up Video style performance footage; and guitar effects for the included Guitar Hero Tunes mode based on James Hetfield's ESP Truckster guitar and Tom Araya of Slayer's ESP bass. With all the recent chatter about Guitar Hero World Tour, you can be forgiven if Guitar Hero: Metallica slipped from your radar. It's still very much coming, though, and the latest issue of Game Informer has fresh details and the first tracks, from both Metallica themselves and the other acts that will feature.

The game will come with the full suite of World Tour instruments, and Vicarious Visions plans to add "Metallica drum sounds" and a selection of guitar and bass "tones" used by Metallica's James Hetfield and Tom Araya of Slayer to the GH Tunes music studio. There will also be a new, extra-hard drum difficulty for those with a splitter and two kick pedals. Having picked up Guitar Hero games again after a long break, the last thing we personally need is greater difficulty, but freaks experts will appreciate that.

Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich recently told KBS Radio why the band decided to offer its music on Guitar Hero while denying it to Rock Band. Ulrich's somewhat cryptic reasoning: "We had to make a decision, and it was one or the other, and we felt that Guitar Hero were more suited for what we were looking for. They were ready to step up on a number of fronts and it's been great." Ulrich did not elaborate on how exactly Activision "stepped up," though he does mention the rumors of a Metallica themed Guitar Hero. Ulrich did not confirm such a game was in the works, instead saying "who knows what's gonna lurk next year, but it's pretty exciting."

So, Activision stepped up and Guitar Hero was more suited to what Metallica was looking for. Somehow we get the feeling that Activision stepped up with a suitcase full of money, which is exactly what Metallica was looking for.

According to one audio engineer, the best listening experience for Metallica's new Death Magnetic album may be the one you create for yourself ... in Guitar Hero III. Engineer Ian Shepherd compared the two on his blog, and said that the version from the game has a lot less clipping and more dynamic range.

What's the culprit? Shepherd blames the "Loudness Wars," which have engineers sacrificing audio quality in favor of a louder-sounding final product. We blame our mad Guitar Hero skills have somehow, through years of digital instrument manipulation, made us better than Metallica. It's a proud day.

The first full downloadable album for Guitar Hero III is finally here; Metallica's latest album, Death Magnetic, will debut on GH III on September 12th, the same day it goes on sale worldwide. Exclusive to Guitar Hero will be two versions of the song Suicide & Redemption featuring extended solos by James Hetfield and Kirk Hammett. The album will also be foward compatible -- all the songs will work in Guitar Hero: World Tour and presumably all the new instruments when it is released in October.

Beginning this Friday, September 12th, you can get a jump on building your Guitar Hero World Tour library by purchasing the new Metallica album, Death Magnetic, on Xbox Live (1440 / $18) or PSN ($17.99) -- you can even practice the guitar parts using Guitar Hero 3. In other words, the DLC album, which happens to be releasing day and date with the not-for-toy-instruments version, is compatible with both games, but you'll have to wait until World Tour is released in late October to channel your inner Lars or reach deep inside your chest cavity to unleash your best Hetfield impersonation. It's alright Lars, you don't need to keep it a secret any longer. With or without your intimations, we all know Guitar Hero: Metallica will be joining the pantheon of geriatric rock simulators right alongside that other game, probably next summer. When asked about the existence of the aforementioned game by MTV News, Metallica drummer and lead Napster-hater Lars Ulrich said, "... if somebody's gonna follow [GH: Aerosmith] up ... we're talking, and its exciting, and the people at Guitar Hero and Activision are rapidly becoming our best new friends in the world. Hot Guitar Hero: World Tour news out of Activision's press conference: Metallica songs will be featured as DLC in all three versions of the game. The Wii version is one of those versions! We like hearing anything that lends credence to the idea that GH World Tour will have DLC on the Wii. Could this replace the rumored Guitar Hero: Metallica?

We admit to not really understanding the next bit, but apparently the drum kit will have some kind of MIDI port for the use of any MIDI drum machine in song creation mode. That sounds pretty serious! Although anyone with a drum machine probably has methods of music creation outside of Guitar Hero.

It's not Guitar Hero: Metallica but metal fans should still be excited about today's announcement (at Microsoft's pre-E3 press conference) that their next album, Death Magnetic, will be released as a Guitar Hero III and Guitar Hero World Tour the same day it launches in stores this fall. "Who knows, maybe a few years from now this will be the norm when your favorite band's new record comes out," the boys from the band said on their official web site.

The band is no stranger to rhythm games, already having tracks featured in both Rock Band and Guitar Hero III already. The band was previously reported to be in talks to premiere a single as Rock Band DLC.

Some details have been revealed about Guitar Hero: World Tour. To start things off, there will be 85 tracks shipped with the disc. A R.E.M. track pack from their newest album will contain three songs. Metallica will be debuting their latest album both in stores and on Guitar Hero: World Tour on the same day. Van Halen and the Eagles will both be exclusive to the title. A GH Tunes feature was also announced, which will allow users to upload their musical content for sharing, and act as a means for players to get ahold of new content for the game.

Harmonix has just unveiled the full song set list for the upcoming Rock Band 2. There will be a whopping 84 songs on the disc, and an additional 20 songs available as free DLC after the game's release. The set list is comprised entirely of master recordings, and features AC/DC, Guns N' Roses, Bob Dylan, Metallica, Pearl Jam and more.

Even though Guitar Hero: Aerosmith is barely off the tour bus, Activision has already announced a second band-centric Guitar Hero game: Guitar Hero: Metallica. The news was buried deep within an Activision financial report from the weekend, though details are sparse -- all we know is that the game will release during the current fiscal year (which ends on March 31st, 2009), and will "likely follow" the release of Guitar Hero: World Tour. Whether it will use the various instruments that World Tour will introduce is a mystery, as are which platforms it will appear on.

It's not the first time that the aging anti-piracy campaigners heavy metal quartet has appeared in a Guitar Hero title, of course -- Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock featured the excellent (and finger-busting) "One". Some Metallica tracks that don't make us sob with their sheer, brain-addling difficulty would be welcomed in the Fanboy HQ.

Wedbush Morgan analyst -- no, not that one -- Edward Woo uncovered some interesting news after sifting through an Activision SEC filing this week. According to the filing (via Gamespot), the company plans to launch Guitar Hero: Metallica in Fiscal 2009, which, for Activision, is anytime between now and March 31, 2009.

No other details are known about the game other than its existence. Will it be guitar-only or multi-instrumental a la the upcoming Guitar Hero World Tour? Regardless, we're guessing that long-awaited new single won't debut on Rock Band anymore.

According to X3F, who heard it from Megatonik, who saw it on ScoreHero, who cribbed it from scans on GameFaqs, OXM like totally printed all the Rock Band DLC for March in its new issue. We've confirmed the tracks are revealed in an advertisement for Xbox Live that was placed by Microsoft. There's no mention of prices, but if March releases follow the general trend, it should be 440 MS points ($5.50) for a pack and 160 MS point ($2) for a single song.
