Team Ninja developed <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/metroid-other-m"><em>Metroid Other M</em></a> for Nintendo; Nintendo is co-developing and publishing <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/17/fatal-frame-spinoff-spirit-camera-the-cursed-memoir-chills-3ds/">Fatal Frame games</a>; and Nintendo allowed the use of a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/19/dead-or-alive-dimensions-has-ridley-stage-samus-cameo-roll/">Metroid-themed level</a> in <em>Dead or Alive Dimensions</em> and a classic <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/05/shigeru-miyamoto-unexpectedly-promotes-samurai-warriors-3/">Nintendo-inspired mode</a> in <em>Samurai Warriors 3</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/03/19/link-and-samus-lend-their-clothes-to-dynasty-warriors-vs/">Link and Samus lend their clothes to Dynasty Warriors VS.</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 19 Mar 2012 14:30:00 EST. The new Figma Samus Aran action figure, due out in Japan this June, easily earns a rating of "thumbs up" by our standards. The 150mm (roughly 6") figure, modeled on Samus's appearance in <em>Metroid: Other M</em>, includes a base, two "beam effect" accessories, five alternate hands, and even a Morph Ball version of Samus.<br /><br />If you have a shelf you'd like to keep Space Pirate-free, you can pre-order your own mini-Samus from toy importer <a href="http://www.amiami.com/top/detail/detail?scode=FIG-IPN-3175">AmiAmi</a> for around $36. While you're at it, you can also pre-order this less posable, less clothed <a href="http://www.amiami.com/top/detail/detail?scode=FIG-IPN-3176&amp;page=">Zero Suit Samus</a> statuette. It's almost Halloween, and it's likely you're pretty much set on what you're dressing up as this year. If you're thinking <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/samus">Samus</a>, think again: Dan Cattell's sprite-based Samus and Chozo Statue costumes are without equal. In fact, they're even featured in the latest issue of <em>Nintendo Power</em>.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/26/this-retro-metroid-cosplay-is-without-equal/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>This retro Metroid cosplay is without equal</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/26/this-retro-metroid-cosplay-is-without-equal/">This retro Metroid cosplay is without equal</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 26 Oct 2011 00:00:00 EST. Your 3DS Mii is pathetically teensy now, suitable for posing next to hamsters and soda cans. But you could make your virtual self much more (virtually) substantial with the <a href="https://club.nintendo.com/rewards-details/a/21002.do">giant AR Card</a>, available now from North America's Club Nintendo for 200 Coins. The 28.5" tall card has the question-mark block on one side, and Mario on the other, allowing it to be used for AR Mario images as well.<br />
<br />
Two other prizes were added to the lineup today: for ten coins, you can get a <a href="https://club.nintendo.com/rewards-details/a/19502.do">Metroid: Other M screensaver</a> -- released almost a year after the game ... or for 400 Coins, there's a set of three <a href="https://club.nintendo.com/rewards-details/a/21004.do">Donkey Kong posters</a>, in the same style as previous Mario and Zelda posters.<br />
<br />

Nintendo's collaboration with Tecmo's Team Ninja didn't end with last year's <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/game/metroid-other-m">Metroid: Other M</a></em>. A new trailer for 3DS fighter <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/dead-or-alive-dimensions">Dead or Alive Dimensions</a></em> reveals a dangerous arena encircled by lava and stalked by Ridley, the winged nemesis of Samus Aran. He's not one for mild-mannered spectating, instead spitting fire and taking an unfortunate combatant for an undignified tour around the ring.<br />
<br />
The trailer also shows that Samus has been authorized to drop a power bomb in the middle of the stage. It's flashy, and detonated without the preface of trashy fighting words -- umm, not that any DOA fighter could handle the deadpan delivery of her <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HE8RTKBFlBI">Other Monologues</a>.<br />
<br />
See the video after the break, along with a trailer that shows off more gameplay and many of the game's slightly more realistic environments. You'll probably recognize a few from <em>Dead or Alive 3</em> and <em>Dead or Alive 4</em>.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/19/dead-or-alive-dimensions-has-ridley-stage-samus-cameo-roll/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Dead or Alive Dimensions has Ridley stage, Samus cameo roll</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/19/dead-or-alive-dimensions-has-ridley-stage-samus-cameo-roll/">Dead or Alive Dimensions has Ridley stage, Samus cameo roll</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 19 Jan 2011 15:00:00 EST. <div style="text-align: left;">Here's a chance to spend something other than full retail price for a new copy of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/metroid-other-m"><em>Metroid: Other M</em></a>. Amazon is currently offering the game in a lightning deal for the far-out sum of $19.99. The discount is only in effect until 6 p.m. EST / 3 p.m. PST, or until they run out, so <a href="http://www.amazon.com/b/?node=409566&amp;ref=tsm_1_tw_vgcsld_mom_20101202">dash on over</a>.</div>

"No, Joystiq, I don't need any more games," you whisper to yourself. "I've got this huge 2010 backlog already -- heck, I haven't even played <em>Bayonetta</em> yet, and that came out in <em>January</em>."<br />
<br />
Your plight is shared by many gamers, but there's little point in protesting. You're going to pick up one of these deals and remain excited until you receive it, play past the intro and then place it on your to-play pile. <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&amp;location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fgp%2Ffeature.html%3Fie%3DUTF8%26ref_%3Damb_link_85826191_2%26docId%3D1000208101&amp;tag=thrinerd-20&amp;linkCode=ur2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957">Amazon lightning deals</a> now offer to extend your intimidating backlog with <em><a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002BSC4ZS">Metroid: Other M</a></em> for $30 (that's one dollar off for every cutscene eye roll) and <em><a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000UW21A0">Uncharted: Drake's Fortune</a></em> for $15.<br />
<br />
Upcoming lightning deals also hint at a reduced price for <em>Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood</em> (going live at 6:15PM PST), <em>Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 2 </em>and <em>Battlefield: Bad Company 2</em>. Outside of lightning deals, you'll also find <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Majin-Forsaken-Kingdom-Playstation-3/dp/B003BE6OYS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=videogames&amp;qid=1290691773&amp;sr=8-1"><em>Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom</em></a> for $23. <br />
<br />
"Well, that is pretty tempting," you mutter. "Maybe I'll check those -- wait, how do you guys know what I'm saying before I've even read this post? Is this a trick? Maybe if I say something unexpected ... garlic cannonball! Flamingo scabbard! Gravity donut! Okay, stop it! This is... this is scaring me."<br />
<br />

Team Ninja has repeatedly proven itself to be one of the great reformers of fast-paced hyperviolent action games -- it should come as no surprise that the studio's new leader, Yosuke Hayashi, has a few things to say about the broader changes affecting the industry. In an interview with <a href="http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/6180/the_resurgence_of_team_ninja.php?page=1">Gamasutra</a>, Hayashi discussed his feelings on the way Team Ninja has been operating post-<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/metroid-other-m"><em>Metroid: Other M</em></a>, as well as how the studio feels about new motion control technology and the 3DS.<br />
<br />
The studio has a vested interest in the latter, having recently announced an entry into the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/dead-or-alive-dimensions"><em>Dead or Alive</em></a> franchise on the eye-popping handheld. Hayashi explained the studio is "having fun" figuring out how to effectively use the 3D display -- though he figures gamers familiar with the franchise are expecting more than a bit of 3D ... <em>jiggling</em>. Of the fighters' ... assets. Why, we would <em>never</em>, sir. <br />

Vijay Thakkar is the technical director at <a href="http://newtoyinc.com/wp/">Newtoy</a>, the company responsible for iPhone hit <em>Words with Friends</em>, as well as a former developer on <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/star-wars-galaxies"><em>Star Wars: Galaxies</em></a> and at <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/20/the-life-and-death-of-ensemble-studios/">the late Ensemble Studios</a>. He took the stage at GDC Online 2010 this morning to run a panel about how to embrace mobile gaming, and while extolling the virtues of Apple's mobile platform and its constant online connectivity, he took aim at the traditional game industry's long development times and buggy releases.<br />
<br />
Thakkar railed for a bit on a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/18/game-breaking-bug-found-in-metroid-other-m/">bug found recently</a> in the latest title of his "favorite gaming franchise ever," <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/metroid-other-m"><em>Metroid: Other M</em></a>. When the save-breaking bug appeared in the game, Thakkar recounted, Nintendo couldn't use the Wii's internet connectivity to patch the game. Instead, Thakkar pointed out, the company had to "ask players to '<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/27/nintendo-offers-impractical-solution-to-metroid-other-m-bug-in-japa/">send us your memory card</a>.'"<br />
<br />
"That's awful," Thakkar added. It's 2010, he said, developers should have ongoing access to update and patch their games when necessary, and he pointed to the iPhone as a platform where games could be released and patched quickly. "At Newtoy, we've completed full games in less time than it took me to design systems for older triple-A titles."<br />
<br />
This agility means that developers can not only fix bugs quickly after launch, but they can also prototype new ideas ridiculously fast (Thakkar said that Newtoy had created one internal test game in just two workdays). Plus, this business model lends itself to filling in and growing features according to player demand after release -- something that a lot of big, lumbering developers haven't figured out how to do yet.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/06/iphone-dev-cheers-short-development-quick-patching-at-gdc-onlin/">iPhone dev cheers short development, quick patching at GDC Online</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 06 Oct 2010 14:00:00 EST. With a regular software update framework in place, Nintendo would have no problem patching out a recently discovered, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/18/game-breaking-bug-found-in-metroid-other-m/">game-breaking bug</a> in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/metroid-other-m"><em>Metroid: Other M</em></a>. Unfortunately, such a system doesn't really exist, leaving the company to adopt a more ... unique approach to solving the problem. Nintendo is asking people living in Japan who have experienced the bug to <a href="http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&amp;sl=ja&amp;u=http://metroid.jp/info/index.html&amp;ei=I6mgTO3KBoGglAfEoqXyDQ&amp;sa=X&amp;oi=translate&amp;ct=result&amp;resnum=1&amp;ved=0CBwQ7gEwAA&amp;prev=/search%3Fq%3Dhttp://metroid.jp/info/index.html%26hl%3Den%26safe%3Doff%26sa%3DG%26rlz%3D1G1GGLQ_ENUS305%26prmd%3Div">send the SD card or Wii console</a> with their game save on it to its Kyoto-based service center.<br />
<br />
We've contacted Nintendo of America to see if it's come up with a more practical -- or any -- approach to fixing the issue. As it stands right now, homebrewers <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-0yAOGszsTI">had a fix</a> ready to go about a week ago, and that's ... well, that's just silly.<br />
<br />
<strong>Update: </strong>NoA has posted a detailed explanation of the issue on a <a href="http://www.nintendo.com/consumer/systems/wii/en_na/ts/metroid-other-m.jsp">support page</a> where it describes how to both create and avoid the bug. If you mistakenly did the former (or were just plain curious), there are also instructions to "set up a repair" and send Nintendo your save file on an SD card. Hopefully, it won't have to travel all the way to Kyoto and back.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/27/nintendo-offers-impractical-solution-to-metroid-other-m-bug-in-japa/">Nintendo offers impractical solution to Metroid: Other M bug in Japan</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 27 Sep 2010 13:15:00 EST. After years of hunting space pirates, alien insects and metroids, it looks like there's one bug that <em>can</em> defeat Samus -- or, more precisely, one <em>glitch</em> in <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/metroid-other-m"><em>Metroid: Other M</em></a>. <a href="http://wii.ign.com/articles/112/1121498p1.html">IGN</a> reports that players have encountered a bug that makes it impossible to complete the game.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/18/game-breaking-bug-found-in-metroid-other-m/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Game-breaking bug found in Metroid: Other M</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/18/game-breaking-bug-found-in-metroid-other-m/">Game-breaking bug found in Metroid: Other M</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 18 Sep 2010 02:00:00 EST. <strong>Mom:</strong> Hi there, my son was asking for a new Wii game. Meteoroid or something.<br />
<br />
<strong>GameStop clerk</strong>: He's probably looking for <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/metroid-other-m"><em>Metroid: Other M</em></a>, the hot new action game from Nintendo.<br />
<br />
<strong>Mom:</strong> Yes, that's the one! I'll take a copy, please.<br />
<br />
<strong>Cler</strong><strong>k:</strong> Ma'am, you're in luck, because we're offering <a href="http://www.gamestop.com/browse/ProductMerch.aspx?groupid=984&amp;loc=homeflash1">$20 off the Wii Remote MotionPlus bundle</a> with every purchase of <em>Metroid: Other M</em>.<br />
<br />
<strong>Mom:</strong> That's okay. Geoffrey already has a remote.<br />
<br />
<strong>Clerk: </strong>But this is <em>MotionPlus</em>. It adds a whole new level of sensitivity to the Wii experience!<br />
<br />
<strong>Mom:</strong> Oh, so this meteoroid game needs that then?<br />
<br />
<strong>Clerk:</strong> Well, no, but ...<br />
<br />
<strong>Mom:</strong> It enhances it somehow?<br />
<br />
<strong>Clerk:</strong> Not really.<br />
<br />
<strong>Mom: </strong>Then why would I want that?<br />
<br />
<strong>Clerk</strong>: ...<br />
<br />

Basic movement felt nothing like the previous games. The story was front and center. Samus talked <em>a lot</em>. The cutscenes were unskippable and initially intolerable.<br />
<br />
As I became acclimated, I began to realize that the game wasn't that much of a departure for the series at all. In fact, the elements that make this feel like a <em>Metroid</em> game gave me a better idea of what it means to <em>be </em>a <em>Metroid</em> game.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/27/metroid-other-m-review/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Metroid: Other M review: a successful fusion</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/27/metroid-other-m-review/">Metroid: Other M review: a successful fusion</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 27 Aug 2010 13:00:00 EST. A Japanese TV commercial ties the game to the past even more directly, showing the original NES game morphing into <em>Other M</em> gameplay footage. The ad even goes so far as to declare this "a Famicom game with the latest technology," a tagline that also came up several times in the last <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/11/metroid-other-m-team-under-the-iwata-asks-microscope/">Iwata Asks interview</a>.<br />
<br />
Meanwhile, the American commercial focuses on the "other M," as in: melodrama -- <em>total melodrama</em>. See the beautiful slow-motion, live-action TV spot unfold just below the Japanese ad after the break.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/20/metroid-other-m-ads-focus-on-nostalgia-overacting/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Metroid: Other M ads focus on nostalgia, overacting</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/20/metroid-other-m-ads-focus-on-nostalgia-overacting/">Metroid: Other M ads focus on nostalgia, overacting</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 20 Aug 2010 10:54:00 EST. While we watch it, we can let our continuing concerns about the number, length and melodramatic content of cutscenes within Team Ninja's upcoming Wii game fall away as we enjoy <em>wall-to-wall action</em>.<br />
<br />
We learn nothing at all of Samus's past in these clips, nor about her feelings, save for the fact that she <em>feels</em> like not being eaten by a lava worm thing. Instead, we see <em>Metroid: Other M</em> as we first imagined it: as a <em>Metroid</em> game with the speed and intensity of the combat dialed way up. We'll find out soon enough how realistic this version is.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/16/metroid-other-m-is-an-action-game-in-this-trailer/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Metroid: Other M is an action game in this trailer</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/16/metroid-other-m-is-an-action-game-in-this-trailer/">Metroid: Other M is an action game in this trailer</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 16 Aug 2010 20:00:00 EST. "Yes, we thought that if we could make a game that could be controlled with just one Wii Remote controller," Hayashi told Nintendo president Satoru Iwata, "we'd enable players who were put off by complex controls to enjoy 3D action games as well." <br />
<br />
The automatic movement of perspective enabled the game to have 3D environments while maintaining simple controls, and clever Wiimote movements like pointing at the screen to explore in 3D allowed the team to avoid "resorting to the Nunchuk," as producer Yoshio Sakamoto called it.<br />
<br />
At the same time, Sakamoto wanted the story and action to blend seamlessly, so the team worked with video production company <a href="http://www.d-rockets.co.jp/">D-Rockets</a>. Director Ryuzi Kitaura described creating detailed storyboards to impress Sakamoto: "I think I drew more than 300 storyboards in total. The image count was over 2,000. By this stage, I was also accounting for camera work and action, so they became really elaborate production storyboards. I think I took over six months to finish them."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/11/metroid-other-m-team-under-the-iwata-asks-microscope/">Metroid: Other M team under the Iwata Asks microscope</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 11 Aug 2010 20:20:00 EST. With the game set to land in a mere 25 days, I had one last chance earlier this week to play the final version of <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/Metroid-Other-M">Metroid: Other M</a> </em>-- though not as much as I would have liked. Nintendo had hand-picked a couple of areas for me to try. The first covered a good amount of ground in a botanical area of the Bottle Ship (the space station where <em>Other M </em>begins), while the second, far shorter one was meant to show that the game's combat isn't always as straightforward as in 2D <em>Metroids </em>past.<br />

Do you feel like living through a full-fledged <em>Metroid</em> experience, but can't be bothered to do all that item-hunting? No, you couldn't care less about those stray E-Tanks and absent missile expansions -- you care about the deep, rich lore of Samus' Zebesian struggle.<em> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/metroid-other-m">Metroid: Other M</a></em> will contain a menu option suited to your bizarre desires: Theater mode, which compiles the game's cutscenes into a streamlined, two-hour, non-interactive story.<br />
<br />
The series' godfather, Yoshio Sakamoto, <a href="http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3180610">explained to 1UP</a> that the mode, which unlocks after completing the game, would allow returning players to soak in all the dialogue and events of the story without having to replay the whole thing over again. Why, that sounds a heck of a lot like the full-length <em>Shenmue</em> movie which accompanied the game's sequel. Only -- and this is just a wild assumption, mind you -- we think <em>Metroid: Other M: The Movie</em> will have way, way <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQa3yGXzGls">fewer sailors</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/07/29/metroid-other-ms-cutscenes-compiled-into-two-hour-movie-in-th/">Metroid: Other M's cutscenes compiled into two-hour movie in 'theater mode'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 29 Jul 2010 22:00:00 EST. We can't tell you everything that's being said in this newest trailer for <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/Metroid-Other-M">Metroid: Other M</a> </em>-- not because we're jerks and don't want to, but because it's in <em>another language</em>. Japanese, to be specific. Thankfully, the characters introduced during this montage of CGI and in-game footage have their names kindly provided in English. Names like Lyle Smithsonian, Adam Malkovich and Brad "U.S." Treasury. (Only one of those is made up.)<br />
<br />
There's also a look at some good old fashioned gameplay, from <em>Other M</em>'s <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/02/25/hands-on-metroid-other-m/">first 45 minutes or so</a>, but also in later, more planet-y environments. The purpose of most of it is to show Samus using the various beams at her disposal -- plasma, grappling and the like. If you're more of a still-image person, Nintendo has also released some new shots from the game, which lands on August 31, including the really<em> </em>cool box art we won't<em> </em>be seeing in the States. Check 'em out below, and watch the trailer beyond the break.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/metroid-other-m-07-29-10/">Metroid: Other M (07/29/10)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/metroid-other-m-07-29-10/#3218251"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/07/mom01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/metroid-other-m-07-29-10/#3218252"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/07/mom02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/metroid-other-m-07-29-10/#3218253"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/07/mom03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/metroid-other-m-07-29-10/#3218255"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/07/mom04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/metroid-other-m-07-29-10/#3218256"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/07/mom05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/07/29/metroid-other-ms-latest-japanese-trailer-beams-in/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Metroid: Other M's latest Japanese trailer beams in</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/07/29/metroid-other-ms-latest-japanese-trailer-beams-in/">Metroid: Other M's latest Japanese trailer beams in</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 29 Jul 2010 15:20:00 EST. Nintendo just gave us the real reason the July 22-25 event is worth attending: a new <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/game/dragon-quest-ix">Dragon Quest IX</a></em> map. If you bring your DS to Nintendo's booth, with the game running in Tag Mode, you'll automatically pick up the "Mortamor" treasure map, being offered for the first time in North America. Presumably, other people will be there doing the same thing, making it your best chance at multiplayer. If you aren't playing <em>DQIX</em> yet, you'll be able to spend some demo time with it at the booth (#2944).<br />
<br />
You'll also get the opportunity to play <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/game/metroid-other-m">Metroid: Other M</a></em>, over a month before its August 31 release. Now that's an opportunity worth fighting the cosplaying crowd for.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/07/19/dragon-quest-ix-map-metroid-other-m-demo-available-at-comic-co/">Dragon Quest IX map, Metroid: Other M demo available at Comic-Con</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 19 Jul 2010 16:00:00 EST. Other notable recent additions include <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/game/la-noire">L.A. Noire</a></em>, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/assassins-creed-brotherhood">Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood</a></em> and <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/game/disney-guilty-party">Disney Guilty Party</a> </em>(all three offering a $10 credit) <br />
<br />
Amazon is continually sneaking new offers in among the ones like <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/03/25/amazon-offering-20-gift-card-with-halo-reach/">Halo: Reach</a></em> and <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/game/call-of-duty-black-ops">Call of Duty: Black Ops</a></em> that have been available for some time. Which kind of makes sense, since new games continue to be announced even during the pre-order period for other games.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/07/01/amazon-offers-credit-on-metroid-other-m-assassins-creed-brot/">Amazon offers credit on Metroid: Other M, Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, more</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 01 Jul 2010 18:30:00 EST. An <a href="http://www.mcvuk.com/news/39823/Metroid-Other-M-confirmed-for-September">ad</a> in the MCV magazine listed the game for "September." Nintendo subsequently confirmed the release period to <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/metroid-other-m-uk-date-narrowed">Eurogamer</a>. <br />

Back when the American release date was slated for June, that Q3 European release seemed depressingly far off. But thanks to the delay of the American version to August 31, and the Japanese release date of <a href="http://metroid.jp/">September 2</a>, we can all enjoy waiting together.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/metroid-other-m-e3-2010/">Metroid: Other M (E3 2010)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/metroid-other-m-e3-2010/#3098413"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/06/metroidom2010-06-08-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/metroid-other-m-e3-2010/#3098414"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/06/metroidom2010-06-08-2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/metroid-other-m-e3-2010/#3098415"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/06/metroidom2010-06-08-3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/metroid-other-m-e3-2010/#3098416"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/06/metroidom2010-06-08-4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/metroid-other-m-e3-2010/#3098417"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/06/metroidom2010-06-08-5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/07/01/metroid-other-m-rolls-into-europe-in-september/">Metroid: Other M rolls into Europe in September</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 01 Jul 2010 16:30:00 EST. She can run faster than someone in a giant suit of armor should be able to, yes, and she can triangle jump to ridiculous heights, but Samus has always felt slow to start and build up speed, as would be expected of someone covered in metal. <br />
<br />
More than the perspective changes, the ability to walk toward and away from the screen, the auto-aiming or any of the other new elements in <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/game/metroid-other-m">Metroid: Other M</a></em>, Samus's "weight" feels the most different. She is faster than she's ever been in Team Ninja's take on <em>Metroid</em> and accelerates to full speed instantaneously. The faster movements naturally lend the game a faster pace, and the way Samus zips across the screen makes the Team Ninja influence apparent.<br />

We've collected all the screenshots and trailers we had yet to post from Nintendo's crowded slate of Wii releases, along with ones you may have missed during our <a href="http://joystiq.com/e3">E3</a> coverage earlier this week. Clear your cache in anticipation of some serious video streaming, and join us after the break to see footage and screens of <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/game/donkey-kong-country-returns">Donkey Kong Country Returns</a></em>, <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/game/kirby-epicyarn">Kirby's Epic Yarn</a></em>, <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/game/the-legend-of-zelda-skyward-sword">The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword</a></em>, and more.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/06/19/visual-overload-nintendos-e3-wii-lineup/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Visual overload: Nintendo's E3 Wii lineup</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/06/19/visual-overload-nintendos-e3-wii-lineup/">Visual overload: Nintendo's E3 Wii lineup</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 19 Jun 2010 17:26:00 EST. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/metroid-other-m"><em>Metroid: Other M</em></a> isn't just a side-scroller. It's a first-person shooter. And a third-person exploration game. And seemingly everything in-between. This trailer features a hodgepodge of perspectives, but how does it play? Stay tuned for our hands-on preview this weekend.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/06/18/metroid-other-m-trailer-keeps-things-in-perspective/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Metroid: Other M trailer keeps things in perspective</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/06/18/metroid-other-m-trailer-keeps-things-in-perspective/">Metroid: Other M trailer keeps things in perspective</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 18 Jun 2010 23:39:00 EST. That makes any extra items given away by retailers fully extraneous, though, of course, we'll <em>take</em> them. GameStop is offering a "collectible art folio" with pre-orders, containing 16 cards with art from <em>Other M</em>. The single preview image looks <em>super</em> classy.<br />
<br />
The "folio" design, by the way, means that these pieces of art will be easy to scan for use as desktop wallpapers. We appreciate that kind of convenience. It's safer than creasing the spine on an art book.<br />

When the company made the announcement, it provided no reasons. As it turns out, there is a decent reason for each delay.<br />
<br />
"As you may know, this game is the product of a unique partnership between longtime <em>Metroid</em> producer Yoshio Sakamoto, Team Ninja and many other individuals and groups, all of whom have set very high standards for this latest installment in the series," a Nintendo rep told <a href="http://wii.ign.com/articles/108/1085849p1.html">IGN</a> regarding <em>Metroid: Other M</em>. "Although it's taking slightly longer than expected to complete the project, we're confident that fans will find it to be well worth the wait." We can understand the game not being finished as a reason not to release it -- although if it were in that precarious of a position, maybe Nintendo shouldn't have been so optimistic with the date in the first place.<br />
<br />
As for <em>Sin &amp; Punishment</em>, "A June 27 launch allows gamers to enjoy <em>Sin &amp; Punishment: Star Successor</em> without having to rush through <em>Super Mario Galaxy 2</em> (May 23)." Honestly, as Treasure boosters, we appreciate any effort made <em>not</em> to bury the developer's work -- although, again, we have to wonder why Nintendo set the original release date so close to <em>Galaxy</em>.<br />

Nintendo just announced delays for the North American releases of both <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/sin-and-punishment-star-successor"><em>Sin &amp; Punishment: Star Successor</em></a> and <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/metroid-other-m">Metroid: Other M</a></em>. <br />

<em>Sin &amp; Punishment</em> has been pushed back from <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/02/24/sin-and-punishment-star-successor-june-7-release-date/">June 7</a> to June 27 -- a brief delay. The Team Ninja/Nintendo <em>Metroid</em> sequel, however, has been bumped more substantially, from <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/02/24/metroid-other-m-june-27-release-date/">June 27</a> to August 31. We should have known the June date was too good to be true when all Europe got was a vague <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/02/25/mario-metroid-sin-and-punishment-more-dated-in-europe/">"Q3" announcement</a>.<br />

This latest trailer addresses that issue. Boy, does it ever. <br />
<br />
After Samus's armor mysteriously grows out of her glowing heart or something, we're treated to a nonstop barrage of the fastest action the series has ever seen. In addition to that, the trailer demonstrates the quick transition between third-person and first-person perspective, as well as some 3D movement in the third-person segments. Oh, and Samus faces off against Mother Brain in the end. <br />

After delivering <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/03/11/nintendos-yoshio-sakamoto-reveals-metroid-other-ms-cinematic/">a GDC panel</a> on his cinematic inspiration, we met with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Metroid-Other-M/"><em>Metroid: Other M</em></a> producer Yoshio Sakamoto to ask him about everything from collaborating with Team Ninja, lessons learned from <em>Metroid Prime,</em> the newfound focus on story in the <em>Metroid</em> universe, and whether or not he played Chair's <em>Super Metroid</em> love letter, <em>Shadow Complex.</em> Read on!<strong><br />
<br />
Can you tell us about the process of working with Team Ninja. Who does what design-wise and technology-wise?<br />
</strong><br />
Yoshio Sakamoto: The original design concept came from me, but then we went and assembled a team that could pull this off. And in this case it was people from Team Ninja, who we really thought was the best fit. But they've also provided a lot of core ideas that have influenced the direction of the game, particularly the director, Mr. Hayashi. So, as I mentioned in the speech today, it's not so much that we're dividing up tasks but collaborating as equals.<br />
<br />
After E3 and the initial announcement a lot of people were making comments like, "Oh, it seems like they've dumped Retro for this series and they want to go with another developer," as if it was a big switch-off. But, in actuality, that is far from the case; rather, we just wanted to put together the best team that we could to make this project, which turns out to be Project M.<b><br />

Yoshio Sakamoto has had a rather diverse career with Nintendo, having worked on games like <em>Metroid</em>, <em>WarioWare</em> and <em>Tomodatchi Collection</em>. Nintendo president Satoru Iwata asked the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/metroid-other-m"><em>Metroid: Other M</em></a> producer to speak at GDC to "explore the secret of creating games for such a dynamic range of titles."<br />
<br />
One of Sakamoto's greatest inspirations seems to be film, noting directors Dario Argento, Luc Besson, John Woo and Brian de Palma as key figures. In particular, he found Argento's "Deep Red" to have a profound impact. Argento's manipulation of mood through music and timing is something he found moving; the use of foreshadowing helped transcend the film beyond other horror films.<br />
<br />
<em>Other M</em> will take these various inspirations by becoming a "synthesis of everything I've learned," Sakamoto told the audience. A new trailer screened for GDC attendees highlighted various cinematic moments in the upcoming Wii game, including a CG reimagination of <em>Super Metroid</em>'s climatic ending. Sakamoto pointed out the return of <em>Metroid Fusion</em>'s Adam, reminding the audience that foreshadowing will play a key role in creating suspense in the interquel. Considering the subsequent applause, it seems clear that Metroid fans approve of this new direction. <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/metroid-other-m-nintendo-media-summit-2010/">Metroid: Other M</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/metroid-other-m-nintendo-media-summit-2010/#2739450"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/02/metroidnms224001-1267042133_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/metroid-other-m-nintendo-media-summit-2010/#2739451"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/02/metroidnms224002-1267042135_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/metroid-other-m-nintendo-media-summit-2010/#2739452"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/02/metroidnms224003-1267042137_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/metroid-other-m-nintendo-media-summit-2010/#2739453"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/02/metroidnms224004-1267042139_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/metroid-other-m-nintendo-media-summit-2010/#2739454"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/02/metroidnms224005-1267042140_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/03/11/nintendos-yoshio-sakamoto-reveals-metroid-other-ms-cinematic/">Nintendo's Yoshio Sakamoto reveals Metroid: Other M's cinematic inspirations</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 11 Mar 2010 15:40:00 EST. Here's a short list of <em>Metroid</em> standards missing from the video:
<ul>
    <li>Samus's suit</li>
    <li>Metroids</li>
    <li>Weapons</li>
</ul>
But on the other hand, it has:
<ul>
    <li>The catchphrase used by the annoying AI guide that nobody liked in <em>Metroid Fusion</em></li>
</ul>
At least, now we know we'll be able to skip the cutscenes between the awesome shooting sequences.<br />

The <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Nintendo-Media-Summit-2010/">2010 Nintendo Media Summit</a> has come and gone, and sent a wave of huge Nintendo news through the industry. We had hands-on time with some of the Wii's biggest upcoming titles, screenshots for <em>almost</em> everything on Nintendo's 2010 calendar and a<em> big ol' sack</em> full of new videos. In case you missed anything, we've wrapped it all up and have it here for you in one tidy little package.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/02/28/nintendo-media-summit-2010-the-recap-post/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Nintendo Media Summit 2010: The Recap Post</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/02/28/nintendo-media-summit-2010-the-recap-post/">Nintendo Media Summit 2010: The Recap Post</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 28 Feb 2010 14:00:00 EST. Nintendo announced that <em>Galaxy</em> will be available in Europe on June 11, not long after America's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/02/24/super-mario-galaxy-2-may-23-release-date/">May 23</a> date. And <em>Sin and Punishment</em> will be out in Europe (under the slightly altered title <em>Sin and Punishment: Successor of the Skies</em>) on May 7, exactly one month <em>before</em> North America gets its hands on that Treasure. <br />
<br />
The <em>bad</em> news is that <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/metroid-other-m"><em>Metroid: Other M</em></a> is dated simply "Q3." It's due June 27 in North America. We've collected all the European release dates for Wii and DS (including a "summer" date for <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/dragon-quest-ix">Dragon Quest IX</a>!</em>) after the break. <br />

</center> <span style="float: right; margin-bottom: 16px; margin-left: 4px;"><script> digg_url = 'http://digg.com/nintendo/Hands_on_Metroid_Other_M'; </script><script src="http://digg.com/tools/diggthis.js"></script></span> There's a lot I want to tell you about the 45-minute demo of <em>Metroid: Other M </em>that I played at the Nintendo Media Summit, but let me answer your most pressing question first: The game is really<em> </em>impressive; it's really fun; it's totally <em>Metroid</em>. The demo was only the beginning sequences of the game, but if everything Nintendo and Team Ninja have managed to deliver in this short span holds up for the entirety of the game, it's going to be <em>really </em>good. (Also, let it be said now, <em>Other M</em> is in <em>no way </em>a re-skinned <em>Ninja Gaiden</em>.)<br />
<br />
My demo began with the game's opening cinematic, which is fully pre-rendered CG and recounts the ending of <em>Super Metroid</em>, to which <em>Other M </em>serves as a direct sequel. It sees Samus in a showdown with Mother Brain (realized by Team Ninja as a mammoth bipedal monstrosity with one huge eye) before the bounty hunter awakes in a medical bay wearing her Zero Suit. The cinematic narrated entirely by Samus (as promised, <em>Other M </em>is the first time we hear her voice -- and it's, well, <em>just</em> <em>all right</em>) and leads directly into a tutorial disguised as a "diagnostic" of her armor and recollection of <em>how to kick ass</em>. <br />

<small>The other, other M is for media, which you can click here to see.</small></center><br />
Nintendo released a flood of information about <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/metroid-other-m"><em>Metroid: Other M</em></a> today, not the least of which is <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/02/24/metroid-other-m-june-27-release-date/">when it's coming out</a>. The Media Summit press release describes a game that takes place primarily in a side-scrolling perspective, using a sideways Wii Remote, but gives the player the ability to switch to first person at any time and control the game with the pointer. So it's an odd hybrid of old <em>Metroid</em> and <em>Prime</em>. <br />
<br />
As these screens reveal, it's also very nice-looking (though it must be said, these screens are from a pre-release version, and at a higher resolution than an actual Wii can display). <em>Other M</em> will be in stores June 27.<br />
