And, in award-winning fashion, the duo did little to sway our hopes for the project to see the light of day. Instead, they said it wasn't going to happen, but <em>not exactly</em>.<br /><br />In response to the question regarding <em>Metroid Dread's </em>existence, Pacini said "It's not what you think it means... it was something that was overlooked and wasn't in any way indicating anything about the handheld game. We know no information about the handheld games." Once Totilo grills him more, he further adds "We actually had a fictional element of something else in the game that by a large coincidence could be read that we were giving a hint about "<em>Metroid Dread</em>" which was not the case. It's a complete and utter coincidence."<br /><br />Then, interestingly enough, Pacini comments "That's all I can say on it." This, of course, lends more fuel to your hopeful fire, as it does ours, but considering that Hunters were referenced in the first <em>Metroid Prime</em> title, which then became a handheld game, we're willing to believe.<br /><br />What do you think?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/27/we-mourn-the-passing-of-metroid-dread-kinda/">We mourn the passing of Metroid Dread (kinda)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 27 Sep 2007 16:53:00 EST. Turns out the joke's on us.<br /><br />Speaking to <a href="http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=171525">CVG</a>, Nintendo has confirmed that the company<span class="text_article_body"> "is not making the 2D Metroid at this point in time."</span> <em>Metroid Dread </em>for DS showed up on a Nintendo pre-E3 list in 2005 but <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2005/11/27/2d-metroid-dread-cancelled/">never materialized</a> after that. The wording does leave room for a three-dimensional title, but instead of getting our hopes up, we're just going to call this one dead.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/06/nintendo-says-metroid-dread-is-dead-at-least-as-2d/">Nintendo says Metroid Dread is dead, at least as 2D</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 06 Sep 2007 15:56:00 EST. Despite being <a target="_blank" href="http://www.joystiq.com/2005/11/27/2d-metroid-dread-cancelled/">unofficially canned</a> in November 2005, <em>Metroid Dread</em>, the <a target="_blank" href="http://www.joystiq.com/2005/05/14/nintendo-ds-gets-more-mario-metroid-and-golf/">rumored</a> 2D-throwback project for DS, is back on the radar. New evidence has been uncovered by <a href="http://ds.ign.com/articles/815/815899p1.html" target="_blank">IGN</a> (and other privileged <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/MetroidPrime3/">Metroid Prime 3</a></em> reviewers) while scanning a certain panel found mid-game in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/27/new-games-this-week-metroid-prime-3-corruption-edition/" target="_blank">this week's Wii release</a>. Using Samus's scan visor, the message reads:<br /> <br /><em>"Experiment status report update: Metroid project 'Dread' is nearing the final stages of completion."</em><br /><br />Is <em>Dread</em> back from the dead? Maybe -- or perhaps <em>MP3</em> developer Retro is just pulling an insider's gag. It's time for Nintendo to fess up.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/27/metroid-dread-nearing-completion-hidden-metroid-prime-3-messa/">Metroid Dread 'nearing completion', hidden Metroid Prime 3 message teases</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 27 Aug 2007 12:58:00 EST. Despite never actually being confirmed by Nintendo, "insiders" later claimed that the project was canceled, bludgeoning our hopes into a bloody pulp. Two years and two E3s have passed since the grapevine reports, and two titles for the series, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=pinball"><em>Metroid Prime Pinball</em></a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/metroidprimehunters"><em>Metroid Prime: Hunters</em></a>, have been released in its stead, without so much as a single <em>Metroid Dread</em> screenshot to corroborate its existence.<br /><br />IGN, who've insisted several times over that the game is in development, noticed a nod to the mythical project in its review copy of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/metroidprime"><em>Metroid Prime 3: Corruption</em></a>. Scanning a particular panel with Samus Aran's visor reveals the following message: "Experiment status report update: Metroid project 'Dread' is nearing the final stages of completion." Could <em>Metroid Dread</em> really be on the way, or is this just a friendly prank from Retro Studios? We'll keep photoshopping dreadlocks and rasta hats onto the bounty hunter until we find out!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/27/metroid-dread-resurfaces-in-mp3-corruption/">Metroid Dread resurfaces in MP3: Corruption</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 27 Aug 2007 11:30:00 EST. Like all of the attending journalists, Parish was allowed to experience some new DS titles ("pretty cool
surprises")&nbsp; at the cost of having to keep his opinions bottled up until Nintendo yanks the cork out. Expect
the yanking to occur as soon as E3 is upon us.<br /><br />Parish does share one minor detail, though. There wasn't a
single new Metroid game. If you had any dreams of playing a traditional, 2D <em>Metroid</em> game on the DS, consider
them decisively stomped to teeny, unrecognizable smithereens. At least for now. It's not that I don't like
<em>Hunters</em>--it's just that I tend to prefer exploring an intricate network of ancient ruins to repeatedly
shooting menacing bounty hunters in the face. Chalk that up to a deranged childhood, if you want.<br /><br />[Via <a
href="http://www.4colorrebellion.com/archives/2006/04/20/mysterious-nintendo-ds-media-event/">4cr</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/04/20/no-new-metroid-games-for-ds-this-year/">No new Metroid games for DS this year?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 20 Apr 2006 17:25:00 EST.
