Update: Apparently neither Sega or High Voltage approved this video, and it was uploaded by accident. At the request of Sega and High Voltage, we've removed it from the post.

High Voltage dares you. This isn't some kind of silly kid's dare, though. No, this is a triple dog-dare, the coup de grace of all dares. And, after watching the video past the break, which compares The Conduit to the likes of other Wii FPS games such as Metroid Prime 3, Red Steel, and Call of Duty: World at War, we'd say High Voltage has certainly made its case. What do you all think?

[Via Go Nintendo]
Compare The Conduit's graphics to other Wii FPS titles [update] originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 29 Apr 2009 16:00:00 EST. If you played through any significant portion of Metroid Prime 3, then you likely encountered a colorful token or two during your progression through the game. These tokens were awarded for a variety of reasons and were a lot of fun to compare with your friends, so it's nice to see them being utilized in the New Play Control versions of Metroid Prime and Metroid Prime: Echoes. Anything adding replay value to these great games is just fine by us!
New Play Control Metroid Prime games get Corruption's token system originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 23 Feb 2009 13:00:00 EST. Zack & Wiki: Quest for Barbaros' Treasure (Wii)

Though its puzzles may occasionally infuriate, the real source of frustration regarding Zack & Wiki stems from the fact that nobody bought it. Every year has its share of titles that deserve an audience yet never find one, and in this regard, Zack & Wiki is easily one of the most tragic games to put an uncontrollable smile on your face. Relentlessly charming and beautifully presented, the debut of Capcom's choc-chomping pirate and his simian sidekick challenges the mind and warms that cynical, meh-spouting lump in your chest. How refreshing it was to overcome obstacles and bosses by choosing the power of the mind over an impossibly large bazooka.
Continue reading Best of the Rest: Ludwig's picks of 2007

Best of the Rest: Ludwig's picks of 2007 originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 02 Jan 2008 06:30:00 EST. With the end of 2007 approaching at near lightning-fast speed, we thought it would be nice to check out what you, the excellent reader, thought about the games of this year. First up, we have the obvious: first-party games. We have a good idea which game you're going to say, but in the name of healthy debate, check out all of the choices past the break.
Continue reading Best of 2007: First-party games [update]

Best of 2007: First-party games [update] originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 18 Dec 2007 11:15:00 EST. Now, you might want to take a seat before reading this next sentence. The Wii is very popular. Can you believe that? We surely couldn't upon reading about it and hearing from others regarding its incredible appeal both in Japan and abroad. So, considering that demand for the console is highest in the U.S., it would make sense for Nintendo to think about focusing some of their development over here, right? Well, Nintendo doesn't have any such plans, apparently.

We can understand that first-party titles are most likely going to need to be directly overseen by Iwata or Miyamoto, but what about Metroid Prime 3? It was one of the Wii's biggest titles this year, why wouldn't Nintendo want to make more titles exclusively like it, geared toward the Western gamer? Well, Nintendo thinks that's what third-party developers are for.

George Harrison (is he even leaving anymore?) commented that "They're [third-party developers] doing a great job both on DS and on Wii. They tend to provide product in categories that we aren't particularly good at doing, like sports or other genres. And since they're Western publishers, they tend to be more in tune with Western tastes." So, for the time being, it looks like Nintendo's first-party development is going to stay confined to the Land of the Rising Fun.

[Via CVG]
Despite Wii's success abroad, Nintendo to keep development in Japan originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 29 Nov 2007 16:00:00 EST. Newsweek's N'Gai Croal, who you may remember hating for his shockingly-worded preference of 2D Metroid, still really likes Metroid Prime 3. In fact, he likes it so much he came up with an alternate button placement on the Wiimote for ideal Prime playing, one that puts the - and + buttons around the A button like the GameCube's layout. He even suggested, during the same discussion that sparked the original outrage, that Nintendo could have shipped such a 'special edition' Wiimote with the game. He backed up this discussion with a Photoshopped Wiimote that Newsweek put together.

We think that's a pretty fun idea, despite being a collector's nightmare. If the function of the thing doesn't really change, why not let people spend their money on weird one-off controllers? It's no different than, say, the Guitar Hero controller or the $200 Steel Battalion doodad, except that it could still be used with other games.
N'Gai Croal reimagines the Wiimote for Metroid Prime 3 originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 03 Oct 2007 14:00:00 EST. Of course, you may want to substitute the word "redesigns" for "fixes," depending on how compulsive your scanning was. In his Level Up blog, Newsweek's N'Gai Croal has posted a visual illustration of a special Wii remote he would have liked to find in the Metroid Prime 3 box. Unhappy with the placement of the plus and minus buttons -- both of which are frequently used in the game -- Croal proposes that the above kidney shaped configuration would add up to less limited controls. As he tells MTV's Stephen Totilo following their lengthy dissection of the game, "I know you'll agree with me."

We certainly do. We reckon the design change would also benefit the games that don't involve intergalactic bounty hunters, eliminating the trek our thumbs embark on every time they leave the safety and security of the A-button. We like the idea so much, we're inclined to forgive Mr. Croal for calling his design the "Metroid Pwiime" remote.
N'Gai Croal redesigns the Wiimote for Metroid Prime 3 originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 03 Oct 2007 03:15:00 EST. He understands the console is popular right now, thinks it's hip, but wonders if the system can keep it up in the long run. Dyack seems to think the platform isn't capable of providing deep, rich experiences. We guess he didn't get to try Metroid Prime 3 yet.

But, even if the console only provides Wii Sports-like experiences, if it sells well, is that really a problem? We may not like it in quantity, as we're more than happy to sit down (or stand up, rather) every now and then and throw down in Wii Sports, but overall want more meaningful experiences from the system. But, if we're not happy and a billion grandparents are picking up the system for Wii Sports or other quick, mass-appeal titles, is that really a bad thing?
Dennis Dyack wonders where Wii will be years from now originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 27 Sep 2007 17:08:00 EST. Not only were Retro trying to make a great game in Metroid Prime 3, they also set out to prove that the Wiimote could be a viable control method for not only the FPS genre, but on the whole, apparently. And, if we had any say in the matter, we'd say they did an excellent job on both counts easily. But, it's not like they didn't run into their fair share of problems.

"When we went to Japan and first saw the controller for the first time I got really concerned because there weren't a lot of buttons," says game director Mark Pacini. But, that didn't turn out to be an issue, as most will agree the game controls wonderfully.

So, do you think Metroid Prime 3 proved that the Wii's control method is a viable solution for genres outside of minigame compilations? Or, do you think that Retro just doesn't settle for anything less than the best in what they do?

See also: Taking a stroll through Retro Studios

Retro: Metroid Prime 3 was all about proving the controller originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 25 Sep 2007 23:52:00 EST. The latest "Vs. Mode" exchange between Newsweek's N'Gai Croal and MTV's Stephen Totilo compares Metroid Prime 3 with BioShock (a.k.a. the game that people won't stop talking about). They're up to part 3 now, which mostly covers the morality of the two games. Almost in passing, Croal makes the following remark: "'Metroid' is a franchise that should never have made the jump from 2-D third-person to 3-D first-person."

He goes on to say that the first-person format works best for games involving forward motion (shoot, go through door, shoot, etc.), and that the Metroid games' trademark backtracking is most easily conceivable in a side-scroller.

And even though we can almost hear you rummaging in the closet for your Indignant Commenter hats, we mostly agree. While Metroid Prime is a great series of games, they aren't great Metroid games. The emphasis on storytelling (via scanning) and the reduced platforming required of a first-person game make for a fundamentally different experience from a real Metroid game. We admit we have big problems with the 3D maps, too, which hampers exploration significantly. For Croal, the change is enough to keep him from making progress in Prime; for us, we can enjoy both independently, but at no point do we really feel like we're playing a 3D Metroid.
Croal: Metroid should never have gone 3D originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 20 Sep 2007 12:45:00 EST. There's been only one time when this blogger lamented the lack: the DVD player had been unhooked temporarily in order to offer up the progressive scan inputs* for Metroid Prime 3 (y'know, when we bought this television years ago, we thought the bank of connections on the back looked like more than we'd ever use), and we didn't feel like unhooking anything or putting the DVD into another game system due to the unwieldy DVD controls. For a moment, we discussed how convenient it would be if the Wii featured DVD playback -- after all, it's got a built-in remote! -- but it was a fleeting wish, and changing out the hookups isn't much of a problem. Beyond that single time, we've never even thought about the Wii lacking DVD playback.

Have you ever wanted to shove a DVD in there, for whatever reason?

*Yes, yes, we could get a switch, but it's rare when we really need all the connections at once ... it was really just the one time! Perhaps it's a sign of changing times, however ....
Wii Warm Up: Have you regretted the lack of DVD playback? originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 20 Sep 2007 09:00:00 EST. Everyone here knows we're big fans of MTV's excellent Multiplayer blog. Up until now, what that really meant was that we were fans of MTV News' gaming reporter Stephen Totilo who, until today, ran Multiplayer as a one-man show. From here on out, the Multiplayer blog has been expanded by rolling up MTV's other video game blog GameDrop (yeah, they had two). So that means new design (we like!), new writers (we're not sure yet), and of course, new content from Totilo.

First, a new Vs. Mode with Newsweek's N'Gai Croal where the two veteran writers discuss the fall's first blockbuster first-person shooters: BioShock and Metroid Prime 3. The first installment expounds some 4500 words on BioShock, with Totilo and Croal both praising the shooter-from-the-deep for its atmosphere, sizing up the world of Rapture to other notable video game settings (is it uniquely memorable?).

Also included in Multiplayer's pseudo-inaugural outing is the below embedded video detailing precisely how to pronounce Ubisoft. "Is it YOO-be-soft? Or OO-be-soft?" We won't give the answer away (we'll leave that to Ubisoft's own), but we do want to take this opportunity to say "nyah nyah nyah" to everyone that ever pronounced it wrong. Ever.
Continue reading MTV drops new Multiplayer blog (plus BioShock Vs. Let's hope this keeps on challenging Iwata and company to avoid "doing the easy." Even the re-priced Xbox 360 couldn't compete with the Nintendo juggernaut.
In software, however, the story was different. After Metroid Prime 3's moment in the spotlight, Bioshock's longer release window won out between those two. Nintendo games barely even struggled into the top five, with Wii Play and its extra controller snapping up that spot. Madden, which is its own juggernaut, dominated sales last month. To see the top ten titles, slip past the break.
Continue reading August NPD: The view from on high

August NPD: The view from on high originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 14 Sep 2007 13:35:00 EST. This week's releases hardly present an opportunity for those of us who want something new to play to enjoy our favorite console. Sure, we could enjoy Sonic 3, but the game isn't something that can't be utterly dominated over the course of a single day. What's a gamer to do?

What will you be playing? Going to enjoy some Virtual Console games this weekend, or will you be enjoying a retail release game? Dare we ask if you still have as of yet to complete Metroid Prime 3?
WRUP: Finding something to drink in the desert edition originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 14 Sep 2007 12:05:00 EST. With only one game releasing this week, many of you might be looking to it for something new to play. We'll only know if you bother to tell us.

So, what are you playing? As for us, well, we've only been able to scratch the surface of Metroid Prime 3. Metroid Prime 3: Corruption and BioShock ... what a pair, eh? Both shooters, both with their own unique spin on the genre, both flagship titles for their respective systems, at least for a while -- since both are followed by even bigger titles soon to come. So what's the difference? Well, one (BioShock) was hyped to the stratosphere, and the other seemed to suffer (according to some) from a lack of attention until just before release. BioShock's other advantage was that the title "suffered" from controversy over content, which often boosts sales.

So which one came out on top in the sales charts last week, when Corruption debuted? The less-hyped Metroid pulled out the top spot. Big Daddies are no challenge for Samus.

It looks great for us, and will give the Wii some attention in regard to "hardcore" success, but it's not as simple as outselling a competing title. BioShock had a week's head start and is on two platforms to boot, so it's no surprise that a johnny-come-lately could sneak in and snatch the top spot. It doesn't make Metroid less awesome, but it's not a clear-cut situation. Still, let's take our moment in the sun and spare some time to bask in the Wii's success in all markets, casual and traditional.
Hype isn't everything: MP3 punks down BioShock originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 06 Sep 2007 12:45:00 EST. For those of you who picked it up, how far along are you now? How are the controls treating you? The difficulty? For us, exploring has really been the only thing we've had a little trouble with -- sometimes it takes a bit to find what we're looking for -- but we haven't found anything difficult otherwise. This is both good and bad.

For those who don't have it yet, did you see anything this week that colored your opinion of the title? All this talk about Metroid Prime 3 made us want nothing more than to get reacquainted with the original NES Metroid. Nothing against Prime, of course-- it's awesome, and we look forward to getting to play it for real-- but this happens a lot. Hype for a new game always instills in us the desire to play through the whole series, or at least our favorite entry. These feelings are often stronger than our desire to play the actual new game.

Are you like us (in this one specific regard)? Do you ever get pulled towards the back catalog when you hear about a new game? Or is this just another case of this blogger's intractable retrogaming tendencies getting in the way of logical behavior?
Wii Warm Up: New release nostalgia originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 01 Sep 2007 10:30:00 EST. According to an interview with Retro Studios' Mark Pacini, the developer of all three Metroid Prime games, Corruption will have to satisfy you for a while, because there won't be another Prime for a bit. Or, if there is, it won't be a Retro Studios game.

According to Pacini, "We are taking a break from the Metroid series and from Samus. Of all the releases this week, what could you possibly be playing? Before we can attempt to answer the question, we must look at the line-up.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 08? Nah, doesn't seem like your kind of game. Carnival Games? Maybe, but not likely as you're almost fed up with minigames on the Wii. We're willing to go on record stating the Metroid Prime 3: Corruption is about the best thing we've slipped into our Wii so far. Wii Sports was a great introduction to the console, and certainly made great use of the motion controls, but we have to go with the richer, fuller experience the latest Metroid has to offer.

In fact, now that we've seen something so fantastic, our standards are likely to be a little higher. Are we alone in this? Fun is fun, certainly, so we'll still love anything that's a good time, but for anything that claims an epic experience, Corruption is setting the bar pretty high.
Wii Warm Up: Has Metroid set the standard? originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 31 Aug 2007 09:00:00 EST. We hope you forgive us for wondering aloud about this exact subject during the podcast going up today, we're going to seem positively out of the loop. Despite our pride, we wanted to tell you that Retro Studios, which just finished up the excellent Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, is taking a break from the series.

As the game's director Mark Pacini told Yahoo in this video interview, "We are taking a break from the Metroid series and from Samus, I'm sure there will be other titles created, but, as far as Retro Studios is concerned, we're taking a break for a little bit." Listen Retro, we're sad to hear it, but you just made three games, we understand. In slightly more chuckle-inducing news, can you believe the team didn't know about the Wii control scheme until they were 9 months into development? Oh, what we would have given to be a fly on that wall.
Retro Studios taking a Metroid break originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 31 Aug 2007 08:15:00 EST. Are you playing Metroid? If so, then by now, there's surely something you like about the game. We want to know what you think the very best part of the game is so far ... and if you have complaints, we want to hear those, too. Overall, we've found the controls to be amazingly smooth (though the way the actions were mapped to A and B at first seemed backwards) and easy to adapt to for lengthy play sessions. Our only complaint thus far feels like a nitpick: what's up with the doors? Sometimes we've already turned away when they decide to open. Maybe we're just impatient.
We have yet to test this, but apparently Nintendo president Satoru Iwata left Metroid Prime 3: Corruption players a secret message, accessed through the cockpit of Samus's ship. A GoNintendo reader translated the message, and our kinda-okay Japanese language skills are sufficient to verify its accuracy.

"Hello, this is Iwata from Nintendo. You may not know from an outsider's point of view, but being a director is really hard! When things are really busy and stressful we (us directors) may look tired and sick, then people may feel sorry for us! But in my case, it's the opposite, I get fatter and fatter, so then people don't think I'm stressed at all!"

We're pretty sure he's talking either about running Nintendo or about his sympathy for the Metroid Prime 3 director, because we don't think Iwata was personally involved with the creation of this particular game. Maybe felt so involved that he reached for the Hello Panda. We have a little giggle when we think about Iwata working on Kirby games and starting to look like Kirby.

Finally, the game we've all been waiting for has arrived and boy has it been well-received. Seriously, just about every review of the title lauds it for its control scheme and graphics. But, you probably already know the control scheme and graphics are great.

Anyway, let's get to the scores:

Nintendo Power (100/100) says it's perfect: "The stunning visuals and immersive gameplay of the finale to the Prime series proves that the Wii is ready for the mainstream gamer." [Oct 2007, p.86]

IGN (95/100) finds the title to be a melting pot of excellence: "Not only do the new controls respond quicker and with more precision than any dual-analog-helmed FPS ever created, but the gesture system works brilliantly, too. Meanwhile, the title delivers everything a Metroid fan could hope for, including spectacular environmental puzzles, epic boss fights and intense combat, all wrapped up in a package that spans multiple worlds and is filled with re-traversal exploration."

Game Informer (95/100) says it's the best Prime to date: "Corruption isn't just the best-looking Wii game to date; it's the best Metroid Prime game period. This is due in large part to the fluid controls. The highly debated, stubborn lock-on aiming system has been replaced with something far better. You can finally look around while moving by aiming the Wii remote."

1UP (90/100) found the game to play up the Wii's strengths and play down its weaknesses: "

On the whole, Corruption takes advantage of the Wii's biggest strength (with its unique controls), and minimizes its greatest weakness (through astounding art direction), while otherwise maintaining or improving upon the high standards and overall polish the series is known for."

GameSpot (85/100) found fault only in the lack of multiplayer: "It's got exactly what you would expect from the last in an acclaimed trilogy of titles: great boss battles, involved environmental puzzles, and a smooth control scheme that cements exactly how FPS controls should work on the platform...While the lack of multiplayer is disappointing, the single-player campaign won't leave you wanting."

Now, imagine if you had to worry about getting killed by Metroids and piloting a starship. Pretty much falls off the list all together, doesn't it?

But did that stop Iwata from calling and leaving that exact information on Samus' answering machine? Of course it didn't. According to Go Nintendo's translation, he says "Hello, this is Iwata from Nintendo. That was because there is the large slip of paper you see above on the back. It's not enough that GameStop calls you during dinner asking for the game you bought from them back and even ruins the story to games while you're in the store, but now they're giving us trash to throw away when we buy games from them?

Maybe we're making too big a deal about a small slip of paper, but considering they have a monopoly in this town as far as release day games go, we're often forced to choke down their practices.
I just bought Metroid and now they want it back? originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 28 Aug 2007 12:05:00 EST. But a month has passed, we've seen more from the game, and the hype train has left the station. If you were planning on simply renting or borrowing the latest Metroid -- or even skipping it altogether! -- have you changed your mind? If you were already planning on picking up the game, are you getting it today, or waiting a while?
Wii Warm Up: Are you in or are you out? originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 28 Aug 2007 09:00:00 EST. The lucky first 100 people to pick up Metroid Prime 3 Corruption were given a few goodies. Aside from this completely awesome shirt you see above, there is also some kind of pin that was given. If we weren't so (how do we say it?) large, we'd hit up some kind of online auction site to acquire.
Nintendo World Store Metroid Prime 3 goodies originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 27 Aug 2007 14:15:00 EST. Despite being unofficially canned in November 2005, Metroid Dread, the rumored 2D-throwback project for DS, is back on the radar. New evidence has been uncovered by IGN (and other privileged Metroid Prime 3 reviewers) while scanning a certain panel found mid-game in this week's Wii release. Using Samus's scan visor, the message reads:

"Experiment status report update: Metroid project 'Dread' is nearing the final stages of completion."

Is Dread back from the dead? Maybe -- or perhaps MP3 developer Retro is just pulling an insider's gag. It's time for Nintendo to fess up.
Metroid Dread 'nearing completion', hidden Metroid Prime 3 message teases originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 27 Aug 2007 12:58:00 EST. There are plenty of games to choose from on the Wii this week (even one that was supposed to release last week), but there's only one that we here at Wii Fanboy care about. Yup, that's none other than Metroid Prime 3. While we sadly live on the eastern coast of the U.S. and must wait until tomorrow before we can play it, those of you on the western side of the states ... well, just don't rub it in that you're probably going to be playing the game in a few hours.

This week's releases include:

Metroid Prime 3: Corruption

Brunswick Pro Bowling

Carnival Games

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 08

So, how do you plan on getting your game on? Did you take off work or ditch any other responsibilities for the releases of Metroid Prime 3: Corruption? Hey, don't act like you didn't think about it!

Wii releases for the week of August 27th originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 27 Aug 2007 09:45:00 EST. Of course, after that, Nintendo showed up with the videos and commercials -- but was it enough? Do you feel that the latest Metroid received the attention that it deserves? Will it sell well? The title has made a fair showing on Amazon so far, which is not bad, considering that Bioshock's release and Halo 3 preorders are competing for the shooting spotlight.

Our thoughts were best summed up in this recent Penny Arcade news post: most of the people muttering about a lack of hype on Metroid not only knew about the game, but whether or not they would buy it. But hey, we're only one opinion in a sea of Nintendo fans. What's yours?
Wii Warm Up: Was it enough? originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 27 Aug 2007 09:00:00 EST.
We've knocked on every single piece of wood we could find, and we now feel relatively confident about proclaiming the game drought officially over. And it's not just the release of Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, though this drought has hit Wii owners the hardest. I spent a few delightful minutes at the Nintendo booth playing Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, and displaying my poor sense of direction to a crowd of onlookers. I got just enough playtime to test out the controls (I didn't need to beat the game or anything!) I can safely say that after about five seconds of fantastically awkward movement, I felt not only comfortable playing the game, but, like with Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, I was enjoying just messing around.

The controls are exactly the same in normal or expert mode, with the exception of Wiimote sensitivity. Expert mode is way more sensitive, and requires much subtler movements. It also enables quicker motion. Looking around and turning with the Wiimote was awkward at first, but it immediately clicked and I was ready to run and jump around. Shooting, of course, is mapped to A, and jumping to B, so there was no problem there. Z on the Nunchuk locks on, and C activates the morph ball. Down on the D-pad shoots missiles. All of these worked well and intuitively. The only exception is scanning: I never quite got it, but it basically involved holding Z, moving the Wiimote to point at an area in the corner of the screen, then holding Z again. It's the only part that I can honestly say takes getting used to.

The best part of the controls is easily the grapple beam, which involves targeting a grapple point and making a lasso motion with the Nunchuk, then pulling back. Once I started doing that unconsciously, I felt pretty cool (I wasn't.) It seems that Nintendo has finally found a "hardcore" equivalent to Wii Sports: if not in popularity, at least in deriving actual enjoyment from the basic control scheme.

Oh, and, in case you were wondering, the game looks hot, especially on those big fancy screens Nintendo was using at their demo stations. We should all get some of those.
PAX 07 hands-on: Metroid Prime 3 originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 25 Aug 2007 17:10:00 EST. The thing looks great. And if you're stranded in airport and two kindly Japanese men offered you the chance to play the game early, we wouldn't be mad at you for being tempted. What better way to pass the hours? We've got a better way: Not getting arrested.

We're not Homeland Security experts, but we're pretty sure that swinging an unusual wand connected via a cord to another device in an airport is a bad idea. And we're positive that pretending to fire this contraption would ... well, let's just say you'd miss your flight. That said, the game looks good enough that we're wondering if we'd be able to resist.
