Both retailers give the re-release a November 30 release date, but they differ wildly on their prices. ShopTo has pre-orders for &pound;15.85, discounted from an apparent MSRP of &pound;19.99, while Zavvi asks &pound;37.45. <br /><br />We didn't even realize it was the 25th anniversary of <em>Metal Gear Solid 4</em>! Oh ... right. It's a re-release honoring the 25th anniversary of <em>Metal Gear</em>. Neither retailer detailed the additions, but MGS4 has since been <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/07/11/report-metal-gear-solid-4-finally-getting-trophies/">updated</a> with Trophies and full installation, which would naturally be on the new disc.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/11/07/metal-gear-solid-4-25th-anniversary-edition-found-on-european/">Metal Gear Solid 4 '25th Anniversary Edition' found on European retailers</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 07 Nov 2012 10:15:00 EST. Just pop in the old disc and be prompted for an update - which we should all be used to with the PS3 by now.<br /><br />The 516MB update adds 34 Trophies, which can be reviewed on the <a href="http://blog.us.playstation.com/2012/08/03/metal-gear-solid-4-ps3-trophies-revealed/">PlayStation Blog</a>. Sony has also stated future retail versions of the game will offer native Trophy support out of the box, but no timeline was given about when those copies will hit. Now, let's go get our 45-minute cutscene on again!<br /><br />[Thanks to everyone who sent this in.]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/08/06/psa-metal-gear-solid-4-trophy-patch-available/">PSA: Metal Gear Solid 4 Trophy patch available</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 06 Aug 2012 09:00:00 EST. The <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/07/11/report-metal-gear-solid-4-finally-getting-trophies/">patch</a> to add trophies to <em>Metal Gear Solid 4</em> will be released in Japan this Monday, August 6. The patch also consolidates install times, preventing the annoying installation between chapters.<br /><br />Konami hasn't confirmed an exact date for North America yet, but did say it would arrive in "early August" on the <a href="http://blog.us.playstation.com/2012/08/03/metal-gear-solid-4-ps3-trophies-revealed/">PlayStation Blog</a>. If you'd like to know what all the trophies are - and why not, you can spoil a game you played four years ago - they're listed after the break.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/08/03/metal-gear-solid-4-trophy-patch-due-in-early-august/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Metal Gear Solid 4 Trophy patch due in early August</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/08/03/metal-gear-solid-4-trophy-patch-due-in-early-august/">Metal Gear Solid 4 Trophy patch due in early August</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 03 Aug 2012 14:30:00 EST. The listing on Konami Japan's "Konami Style" shopping site also reveals a new installation method allowing you to fully install the game, rather than seeing the install screen between every chapter.<br /><br />This update will be in both the re-release and the Trophy patch for existing copies. Konami's American <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/07/11/report-metal-gear-solid-4-finally-getting-trophies/">Twitter account</a> announced the patch and new version, which suggests that they will be released here as well.<br /><br />In other Metal Gear news, Konami's <a href="http://www.konami.jp/mg25th/">25th anniversary site</a> for the series is up, with information about the Tokyo event and pictures of recent <em>Metal Gear</em> items.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/07/12/metal-gear-solid-4-best-version-also-includes-full-install-opt/">Metal Gear Solid 4 'Best Version' also includes full install option</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 12 Jul 2012 09:35:00 EST. According to an <a href="http://andriasang.com/con1vt/metal_gear_announcement/">early report</a> out of Famitsu, a Japanese budget re-release in August will be accompanied by the long-awaited patch to add Trophies to the game. The budget "The Best" version will have Trophy support included, but a concurrent patch will add it to existing copies.<br /><br />According to Andriasang's source, Kojima Productions will hold a Metal Gear anniversary event in Tokyo on August 30, during which Hideo Kojima will announce something new, related in some way to the data-sharing "Transfarring" feature found in <em>Metal Gear Solid HD Collection</em>. Specifically, "Transfarring" was a test of part of the "vision" for this new game.<br /><br /><strong>Update:</strong> After a closer look at the Famitsu article, <a href="http://andriasang.com/con1wf/mgs_shinkawa_famitsu_cover/">Andriasang</a> reports that the arrival of the Trophy patch has not been explicitly tied to the August release of the budget version. However, since the budget re-release will support Trophies natively, it follows that the patch would be ready around the same time.<br /><br /><strong>Update 2:</strong> Konami's official Twitter account <a href="https://twitter.com/Konami/status/223141624895635457/photo/1">confirmed</a> that a patch and a new game version are currently in the works.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/07/11/report-metal-gear-solid-4-finally-getting-trophies/">Metal Gear Solid 4 finally getting Trophies [Update: Konami confirms]</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 11 Jul 2012 09:30:00 EST. Bad news, fraudulent network connectors: Your days of slowing down <em>Metal Gear Online</em> are over! Konami has issued a -- <em>way past-due</em> -- patch for the online component of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/metal-gear-solid-4-guns-of-the-patriots"><em>MGS4</em></a>, which detects "fraudulent" connections and (we assume) blocks them, freeing up all kinds bandwidth for ... <em>hello</em> ... anybody?<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/09/belated-metal-gear-online-patch-detects-fraudulent-network-conn/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Belated Metal Gear Online patch detects 'fraudulent network connections'</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/09/belated-metal-gear-online-patch-detects-fraudulent-network-conn/">Belated Metal Gear Online patch detects 'fraudulent network connections'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 09 Feb 2011 04:00:00 EST. As if we didn't understand the implication <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/27/lost-planet-2-yakuza-demonstrated-on-ngp/">the first time</a>, Sony paraded Hideo Kojima out on stage -- this better be a <em>Zone of the Enders</em> game! -- to demonstrate ... right, of course: <em>Metal Gear Solid 4</em> on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/27/psp2-ngp-next-generation-portable/">the NGP</a>. "There's no announcement of a new title today," Kojima confessed, "but I'd like to talk about the future perspective."<br />
<br />
We get it -- PS3 games can be exported to NGP -- and Kojima is envisioning a future in which games will be seamlessly transferred back-and-forth between the home console and portable unit. "This dream is going to come true in the near future," he pledged, "and right now I'm working on this project."<br />
<br />
"I can't disclose further information," Kojima added -- but that's what E3's for, right?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/27/metal-gear-solid-4-demonstrated-on-ngp/">Metal Gear Solid 4 demonstrated on NGP</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 27 Jan 2011 02:45:00 EST. Poor ol' Hideo Kojima has apparently been on the receiving end of a plethora of demands from his rabid fanbase, all crying out for the integration of some of the PS3's patched-in features into <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/metal-gear-solid-4-guns-of-the-patriots"><em>Metal Gear Solid 4</em></a>. The idiosyncratic developer took time out of his busy schedule of eating <a href="http://yfrog.com/3d91qej">bizarre-looking foodstuffs</a> to respond <a href="http://www.andriasang.com/e/blog/2010/09/01/kojima_mgs4_trophy_support/">by saying</a>, "I wanted to make a 'Complete Version' with trophy support and 3D, but if I did that I wouldn't be able to work on a new game. I wonder if someone else would make it for me."<br />
<br />
Well, gang -- any takers? It really shouldn't be too hard. Just drop a trophy in for completing each boss fight, one for beating the game on its hardest difficulty, and one for beating the game using only your wits and a pornographic magazine. Give them some clever names ("I Only Read It For The Articles," for instance), and baby, you're good to go.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/02/kojima-wants-a-complete-edition-of-mgs4-if-someone-else-makes/">Kojima wants a 'Complete' edition of MGS4, if someone else makes it</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 02 Sep 2010 20:00:00 EST. In this post-<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/modern-warfare-2"><em>Modern Warfare 2</em></a> world, a number like five million may seem insignificant -- even laughable, to some. But hey, don't knock the PS3's latest accomplishment of selling <span>5,001,598</span> consoles in Japan. <br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.famitsu.com/game/news/1234020_1124.html">Famitsu</a> brings us the news, along with the top-selling games on the platform so far: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/03/10/final-fantasy-xiii-ships-5-million-copies/"><em>Final Fantasy XIII</em></a> is first with <span>1,883,828 units, <em>Metal Gear Solid 4 </em>takes second with </span><span>706,461 and <em>Yakuza 4</em> -- which was just released a few weeks ago -- comes in third, selling an impressive </span><span>526,093 copies so far. Gosh, the only thing that's missing is a <em>Dragon Quest</em>.</span><br />

<div align="left">In one of a series of videos released by Microsoft of developers offering their thoughts on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/project-natal">Project Natal</a>, Kenichiro Imaizmu, producer of the <em>Metal Gear Solid </em>series at Kojima Productions, revealed that Hideo Kojima had been leading the design of a custom controller for use with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/metal-gear-solid-4"><em>Metal Gear Solid 4</em></a>. <br /><br />As Imaizumi described, the ideas were figuratively -- and literally -- shocking. "We tried running electric shock waves, install a pulse reader ... we also tried to build a controller that's receptive to the strength of the [player's] grip," he divulged. "We tried a lot, even a transforming controller." While it's too bad the truly <em>shocking</em> DualShock will never see the light of day, at least we may now know where Nintendo got the idea for <em>its</em> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/wii-vitality-sensor/">pulse reader</a>: Kojima's dumpster ...<br /><br />Back to the video, Imaizumi also extolled the virtues of Project Natal, mentioning its ability for gesture, voice and color-based interaction. But, as far as we know, Natal doesn't have the ability to zap players with electric shocks. That's just <em>never</em> gonna happen. (Uh-oh ... did we just say -- yep. <em>Never</em> say never again.)<br /></div>

As per the deluge of tips we received regarding an <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/06/rumor-best-buys-80gb-ps3-to-be-bundled-with-mgs4-and-killzone/">80GB PlayStation 3 bundle</a> with <em>Killzone 2</em> and <em>Metal Gear Solid 4</em>, the <a href="http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=9401417&amp;st=killzone+2&amp;lp=3&amp;type=product&amp;cp=1&amp;id=1218099072505">Best Buy website</a> is now reflecting the deal. The bundle retains the price of a regular ol' 80GB PS3 ($400), but will include both of the PS3 exclusive titles. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/26/rumor-ars-technica-mole-foretells-ps3-and-360-price-drop-in-fal/">Rumors surrounding the 80GB bundles</a> suggest it's an effort to make space for an upcoming <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/ps3-slim">PS3 Slim</a> on store shelves -- and considering the $90 worth of free games Sony is throwing at consumers, it's quite possible that shelf space will open for the next console iteration.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/07/07/killzone-2-metal-gear-solid-4-ps3-bundle-hitting-best-buy-now/">Engadget</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/07/mgs4-killzone-2-ps3-bundle-available-now/">MGS4 / Killzone 2 PS3 bundle available ... now!</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 07 Jul 2009 11:30:00 EST. We get pretty nervous when publishers start testing the waters with higher price points, so we like to think our sticker shock at seeing this $1,000 listing for <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/metal-gear-solid-4">Metal Gear Solid 4</a> </em>is forgivable. But it <em>is</em> a pretty good game and we <em>would</em> like to have a second copy, just in case. Plus, there's only one left in stock!<br /><br />But just as we were about the make the purchase, we noticed that shipping price. $7.99?! What, are we <em>made</em> of money?<br /><br />[Thanks, Christopher]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/29/buy-metal-gear-solid-4-for-a-bargin-price-of-1-000/">Buy Metal Gear Solid 4 for a bargain price of $1,000</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 29 Jun 2009 11:10:00 EST. Konami has a whole week of "surprises" lined up for the one-year anniversary of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/mgs4"><em>Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots</em></a>' release. So, surprise: <em>Metal Gear Online </em>has received an unlikely update in the form of bikini-clad babes. Rather than draw form the series' pool of female characters, the pack lets players roll their own originals, complete with sultry -- even scandalous! -- "taunts."<br /><br />The DLC is free for players who already have the GENE expansion pack purchased and installed. No amount of money will get your dignity back after friends catch you testing the ladies' over-the-top "jiggle simulation." (Or simply watching the video of others doing it after the break.)<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/15/metal-gear-online-gets-worthy-bikini-pack/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Metal Gear Online gets '!' worthy bikini pack</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/15/metal-gear-online-gets-worthy-bikini-pack/">Metal Gear Online gets '!' worthy bikini pack</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 15 Jun 2009 17:30:00 EST. Old Snake, domestic partners Ratchet &amp; Clank, glam goth Nero and others will be offered up as PS3 "Greatest Hits" for $30 starting June 16. This will be the second round of discounted best-selling software for the console, as the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/15/sony-announces-ps3-greatest-hits-resistance-oblivion-others/">first batch</a> hit at around the same time last year. The latest additions include:<br />
<ul>
    <li><em>Army of Two</em></li>
    <li><em>Battlefield Bad Company</em></li>
    <li><em>Devil May Cry 4</em></li>
    <li><em>Gran Turismo 5 Prologue</em></li>
    <li><em>Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots</em></li>
    <li><em>Ratchet &amp; Clank Future: Tools of Destruction</em></li>
</ul>
With almost all those titles (<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/25/mega64-cracks-the-kojima-code/">maybe</a>) prepping for sequels in the near future, if you haven't checked them out, there's some quality in the offerings.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/28/mgs4-ratchet-others-30-as-ps3-greatest-hits-starting-june-1/">MGS4, Ratchet, others $30 as PS3 'Greatest Hits' starting June 16</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 28 May 2009 10:03:00 EST. Well, yet another Konami event without any peep of <span style="font-style: italic;">MGS4</span> on Xbox 360 and, if you follow Kojima's chart of <span style="font-style: italic;">Metal Gear</span> progression, it doesn't sound like it's ever happening. Next up is a new project -- "the next <span style="font-style: italic;">MGS</span>" -- coupling Western development techniques, with an advance in hardware and game design to hopefully create Kojima's apparently-still-unfulfilled goal of bringing us "the ultimate stealth game." Maybe then, Kojima will be able to finally leave the <span style="font-style: italic;">Metal Gear</span> series behind.<br /><br /> Head past the break for complete coverage of the Kojima keynote (updated from bottom to top).<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/26/joystiq-live-from-hideo-kojimas-gdc-2009-keynote/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Joystiq live from Hideo Kojima's GDC 2009 keynote</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/26/joystiq-live-from-hideo-kojimas-gdc-2009-keynote/">Joystiq live from Hideo Kojima's GDC 2009 keynote</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 26 Mar 2009 14:45:00 EST. <div align="left">Konami has revealed -- via the <a href="http://blog.us.playstation.com/2009/03/05/metal-gear-online-%E2%80%93-scene-expansion-release-date-and-details/">PlayStation Blog</a> -- that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/metal-gear-online"><em>Metal Gear Online</em>'</a>s latest expansion, "SCENE," will be available in North America beginning March 17. So, the pack will be available via PSN and <a href="https://my.konami.net/mgo2/login.mgo?sub=GAME">Konami's own online shop</a> for $9.99; with the previous "<a href="http://playstation.joystiq.com/2008/11/17/metal-gear-online-meme-expansion-available-this-week/">MEME</a>" expansion for $14.99; or as part of the full add-on pack -- "MEME," "<a href="http://playstation.joystiq.com/2008/07/11/mgo-to-expand-soon-with-the-gene-expansion/">GENE</a>" and "SCENE" -- for $17.99.<br /><br />The expansion, which adds <em>MGS4 </em>characters to the mix along with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/18/metal-gear-online-scene-expansion-adds-playable-raiden-vamp/">new maps</a> and a "Solo Capture" mode, can be pre-ordered via Konami's e-store, which is offering an exclusive in-game cardboard box headgear (sure not to get you noticed) for those who make the early comittment. Of course, you get a whole bunch'a wacky stuff just for buying the pack. Clown paint, anyone? Anyone? <em>Crickets</em>?</div>

Like most everything Kojima-related, it's filled with some truly zany moments.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mgo-scene-expansion/">Metal Gear Online: SCENE Expansion</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mgo-scene-expansion/#1434805"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/03/toughness_shockabsorb_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mgo-scene-expansion/#1434804"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/03/emblem_title_tshirt_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mgo-scene-expansion/#1434802"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/03/emblem_fighting_fish_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mgo-scene-expansion/#1434801"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/03/skill_cqcex_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mgo-scene-expansion/#1434800"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/03/skill_charmup_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/26/see-metal-gear-online-scene-in-action/">SEE Metal Gear Online SCENE in action</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 26 Feb 2009 14:00:00 EST. The results are in for <a href="http://www.edge-online.com/news/japans-top-100-sellers-revealed">Japan's Top 100 software</a> sellers for 2008 and the data is certainly unsurprising. Rising to claim the #1 spot is <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/12/monster-seller-3-million-copies-of-monster-hunter-portable-2nd/"><em>Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G</em></a>. The PSP phenomenon has been topping the Japanese software charts for most of last year, and is, in fact, <em>still</em> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/12/monster-seller-3-million-copies-of-monster-hunter-portable-2nd/">selling hotly</a> in Japan. <br /><br />The <a href="http://playstation.joystiq.com/2008/12/08/top-5-best-selling-ps3-games-since-its-launch-in-japan/">PS3's best-selling</a> game in Japan, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/metal-gear-solid-4"><em>Metal Gear Solid 4</em></a>, barely scratched the top ten as it ranked in at #11. It was knocked out of the top ten by nine Nintendo exclusives, which include the likes of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/super-smash-bros-brawl"><em>Super Smash Bros. Brawl</em></a> at #5. But wait, Solid Snake is also <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/07/31/kojima-to-design-snakes-smash-bros-brawl-stage/">in that title</a> ... In a way, you could say he <em>infiltrated</em> the top ten. Back to your old tricks, Snake? And here we thought you had retired.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/17/monster-hunter-tops-japans-100-best-sellers-list-in-08-mgs4-b/">Monster Hunter tops Japan's 100 best-sellers list in '08, MGS4 best-selling PS3 game</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 17 Feb 2009 15:50:00 EST. Unsurprisingly, Konami's grandpa-spy sim <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=Metal%20Gear%20Solid%204">Metal Gear Solid 4</a></em> sold extremely well across the globe -- so well, in fact, that the game <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/mgs4-joins-ps3-platinum-portfolio">has reached the ever prestigious Platinum Range in Europe</a>, an honor bestowed to titles that reach sales upward of 400,000 within their first year on the market. A Platinum edition of the game will hit European store shelves on March 5, bringing with it some slightly updated box art and a discounted price of EUR 29.95 (or GBP 19.99). <br /><br />Hopefully, the game will follow suit by qualifying for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/28/playstation-3-greatest-hits-buyers-guide/">Greatest Hits status</a> in North America, an honor that brings a similar discount to $29.99, as well as a provocative crimson jewel case. We've begun growing our <a href="http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2006/05/12/">unsettling math teacher moustaches</a> in feverish anticipation.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/16/metal-gear-solid-4-going-platinum-on-march-5/">Metal Gear Solid 4 going Platinum on March 5</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 16 Feb 2009 13:30:00 EST. Hideo Kojima will sneak into the 2009 Game Developers Conference this year and get his keynote on, according to <a href="http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=22228">Gamasutra</a>. It'll be the designer's first presentation at the event, with his debut titled "Solid Game Design: Making the 'Impossible' Possible." <br /><br />GDC Event Director Meggan Scavio notes that the group has asked <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/hideo-kojima">Kojima</a> to keynote almost every year "for as long as [she] can remember." She's curious to see how the "revered and elusive" creator will inspire attendees. The presentation is scheduled for an hour, but given the designer's inability to edit, don't be surprised if it lasts 8 hours, with two 90-minute cutscenes and a couple of codec conversations included.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/10/kojima-to-speak-at-gdc-for-first-time/">Kojima to speak at GDC for first time</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 10 Feb 2009 14:27:00 EST. Whipping up some numbers to report, Konami <a href="http://www.edge-online.com/news/konami-enjoys-steady-growth">announced</a> that its net income for the games division during the first three quarters of the fiscal year reached &yen;13.3 billion ($148.3 million). The figure represents a 5% increase from the same time last year; however, for its full fiscal year, the company estimates to bring in &yen;18 billion ($200M), a slight decrease from last year's &yen;18.5 billion ($206.3M).<br /><br />The financial fortunes in the division were driven by (gasp!) <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/mgs-4">Metal Gear Solid 4</a> </em>and the <em>Pro Evolution Soccer </em>series. With all the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/03/ea-quality-up-but-q309-earnings-below-expectations/">negative news coming out of other publishers</a>, Konami's ability to weather the current global financial crisis is about as good as it gets.<br /><br /><strong> </strong>

According to the NPD, a good exclusive does not necessarily equal <em>good sales</em>. The group has collected data for 2008's exclusives on each platform and, well, there have been some under-performers. On the Xbox 360 side, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/banjo-kazooie-nuts-and-bolts/"><em>Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts &amp; Bolts</em></a> was a disappointment, selling only 140,000 units. The other exclusive on Microsoft's console, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/fable-2"><em>Fable 2</em></a> (<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/GOTY2008/">Joystiq's GOTY</a>), was more of your traditional success story with a respectable 1.2 million copies sold.<br /><br />And what about the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/20/hirai-says-360-lacks-longevity-wont-top-ps3/">industry-leading</a> PS3? We <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/21/npd-mgs4-sells-over-1-million-in-us-tomb-raider-left-undiscove/">already know <em>MGS4</em> sold extremely well</a>, but the same cannot be said (yet) for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/littlebigplanet"><em>LittleBigPlanet</em></a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/resistance-2"><em>Resistance 2</em></a>, both of which seemed to perform lower than expectations; <em>LBP</em> sold 611,000 copies in North America while <em>R2</em> unloaded 600,000 units. <br /><br />As for <a href="http://nintendo.joystiq.com">Nintendo</a>, well ... it <a href="http://nintendo.joystiq.com/2009/01/26/nintendo-games-account-for-almost-half-of-2008-software-sales/">won</a>. It always does. Last we heard, Nintendo stopped making games and was in the process of building a Kirby-shaped Death Star to orbit the planet.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/28/npd-console-exclusives-perform-with-mixed-results-in-2008/">NPD: Console exclusives performed with mixed results in '08</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 28 Jan 2009 15:56:00 EST. The game industry's closest approximation of Hollywood's Academy Awards has to be the Interactive Achievement Awards. The Academy of Interactive Arts &amp; Sciences (AIAS) has revealed its nominees for 2008, and <em>LittleBigPlanet</em> has managed to run away with ten category nominations, the most of any game this year. <br /><br />Ahem. And the nominees are:<br /><br /><center>

Now that we've seen the <em>real</em> list for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/20/these-are-the-real-top-games-of-2008/">2008's top-selling games</a>, Gamasutra has taken a look at some of the high-profile titles that <a href="http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=21937">didn't make the cut</a>. Thanks to data from the NPD, we now know <em>Metal Gear Solid 4</em> has passed the one-million threshold in the US with 1.08M in sales -- 775K in June, 301K since then. It's worth noting that the figure doesn't include copies sold in the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/21/steel-a-proper-glance-at-mgs4-ps3-bundle/"><em>MGS4</em> PlayStation 3 bundle</a>. Globally, Old Snake has enlisted <a href="http://www.ps3fanboy.com/2008/11/07/mgs4-sells-four-million-copies-worldwide/">over 4 million</a> soldiers. As for <em>LittleBigPlanet</em> and <em>Resistance 2</em>, they sold 611K and 598K stateside in 2008, respectively. <br /><br />Here's the bad news: <em>Tomb Raider: Underworld</em> has managed only 246K across three platforms since launching mid-November -- indeed a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/09/eidos-disappointed-with-tr-underworld-sales-stock-drops/">disappointment</a>, but also a lowered bar for Naughty Dog's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/19/nathan-drake-beyond-lara-crofts-popularity/">Nathan Drake vs. Lara Croft</a> claim. To its credit, <em>TRU</em> has done better elsewhere, selling 1.5 million worldwide. Meanwhile, <em>Prince of Persia </em>did 483K in December, with at least 213K of those going to the PS3 version. While that puts it on par with Sony's first-party titles last month, it also means the Xbox 360 version saw relatively disappointing sales.<br /><br /><br />

Though you could never tell from his numerous games, Hideo Kojima is quite fond of movies. In fact, the <em>Metal Gear</em> auteur considers 15 films in particular as inspirational components of his epic stealth series. According to <a href="http://www.siliconera.com/2009/01/20/these-films-influenced-kojima-and-the-metal-gear-solid-series/">Siliconera</a>, Japanese media store Tsutaya is running a new promotion highlighting all 15 flicks (seen above), complete with trivia (Hal and David? Those names come from <em>2001: A Space Odyssey</em>!) and easily clickable purchase links. <br /><br />But ... wait a minute. Where's <em>Escape from New York</em>?<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.siliconera.com/2009/01/20/these-films-influenced-kojima-and-the-metal-gear-solid-series/">Siliconera</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/20/kojima-picks-15-films-that-influenced-metal-gear-solid/">Kojima picks 15 films that influenced Metal Gear Solid</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 20 Jan 2009 15:38:00 EST. There's only one way to show appreciation for any given object of desire and that is through the loving building blocks of dreams known as LEGO. Yes, LEGO. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/metal-gear-solid-4"><em>Metal Gear Solid 4</em></a> fan Samuel Lafleur knows this one simple truth in life and has made a worthy tribute to his beloved game. He has made, out of LEGO, Solid Snake's preferred weapon of choice: the M1911 Operator pistol. <br /><br />It's a rather gorgeous design; he's even got several modifications to it on his <a href="http://mocpages.com/moc.php/91383">web page</a>, so check out all the pics over there. Also, Sam, can we make a request for a full-sized Solid Snake bust which is opening up its mouth ready to shoot itself with that Operator? Only then will your tribute be complete. Well done.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/18/fan-makes-mgs4-inspired-m1911-gun-out-of-lego/">Fan makes MGS4-inspired M1911 gun out of LEGO</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 18 Jan 2009 11:00:00 EST. <div align="left">David Jaffe is the focus of The Academy of Interactive Arts &amp; Sciences' weekly feature <em>Ten Questions</em>, where a member of the industry is subjected to ... well, ten questions. When asked about which title the acclaimed video game designer is "most jealous" of, he named <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/metal-gear-solid-4"><em>Metal Gear Solid 4</em></a> as his choice, praising it as "an amazing achievement of both gameplay and mastering the process of game production. To make a game of that scale and at that level of quality clearly took a whole hell of a lot of tenacity and vision."<br /><br />You know what we think? Jaffe states in the feature that if he wasn't a game developer, he would be a movie director or film editor -- and we gotta say, <em>MGS4</em> is as film-like as they come.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/15/david-jaffe-is-most-jealous-of-metal-gear-solid-4/">Joystiq</a>]</div>

How dedicated is the vocal cast of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/metal-gear-solid-4"><em>Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots</em></a>? So dedicated that they believe they <em>are</em> the characters to which they breathe sound and life into. Is it some form of hypnotic gene therapy which brings out such wondrous talent? Maybe ... it's the work of the Patriots? *Cue dramatic music* Whatever the reason be, they now meet up regularly to (jokingly) discern between what really is game and reality.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.youtube.com/user/UltraNeko">Dr. Sadie</a>, records one such session documenting how far our beloved actors have had one too many serums in the neck. Paul Eiding (aka Colonel Campbell) is on a junkie binge for some Scissors 61. While <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/metal-gear-solid-4-launch-in-times-square/858125/">Christopher Randolph</a> (aka Otacon) reveals he's been turning his cat "Mark" into Mark II ... by strapping a camera to its back. Is it a clich&eacute; to call <em>Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots</em> the gamer's game? Of course it is. But that's the thing with clich&eacute;s, they're just so perfect at explaining what we're too unimaginative to express in fantastic detail. Fitting then, that <em>MGS4</em> is a near-impossible amalgamation of clich&eacute; and creativeness. A spawn of convoluted histories and a bold vision of gaming's future.<br /><br />If it was up to creator Hideo Kojima to expound the merits of his masterpiece you'd be in for a verbose, probably boring -- and most certainly unplayable -- account. Thankfully, we will do our best to provide a terse study of Joystiq's runner-up to Game of the Year 2008. So then, what makes <em>MGS4</em> so darn special?<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/01/joystiqs-top-10-of-2008-metal-gear-solid-4/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Joystiq's Top 10 of 2008: Metal Gear Solid 4</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/01/joystiqs-top-10-of-2008-metal-gear-solid-4/">Joystiq's Top 10 of 2008: Metal Gear Solid 4</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 01 Jan 2009 12:31:00 EST. <p>Only two PS3-exclusive titles went home with awards this past Sunday from Spike TV's annual Video Game Awards. Media Molecule won the honor of "Studio of the Year" for their work on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/littlebigplanet"><em>LittleBigPlanet</em></a>, which, unsurprisingly also netted them "Best PS3 Game." The embedded video above comes from the <a href="http://blog.us.playstation.com/2008/12/15/spike-2008-vgas-media-molecule-win-studio-of-the-year-littlebigplanet-best-ps3-game/">PS.Blog</a> where Jeff Rubenstein caught up with the glowing-faced recipients moments after the show had ended.<br /><br />As for that other PS3-exclusive title, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/metal-gear-solid-4"><em>Metal Gear Solid 4</em></a> -- the tactical espionage title which debuted back in June -- won "Best Graphics" and "Best Original Score." While we definitely believe both wins are well-deserved, we could've seen <em>MGS4</em> as Game of the Year material, but that's just us. It's also interesting to note, and a bit ironic we should say, that <em>MGS4</em> won Best Original Score amongst a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/12/metal-gear-solid-theme-unused-in-mgs4-due-to-plagiarism-claims/">recent debacle</a> regarding just how original that score really is -- well, its main theme, rather. Those would be "Gold" awards in Sony Computer Entertainment Japan's annual PlayStation Awards, not actual <em>gold PlayStations</em>. No, we think excellent sales are reward enough to render the composition of a congratulatory gong irrelevant -- the Gold award only goes to those games that sold over 500,000 copies in Japan over the last year.<br />
<br />
This year's PlayStation recipients: Senior citizen stealth sim <em>Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots; </em>pointy-haired sword swinger <em>Crisis Core</em>: <em>Final Fantasy VII; </em>and Sega's <em>Phantasy Star Portable</em>, which we failed to include in the headline. Similarly snubbed but given a fancy "Platinum" award was <em>Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G</em>, which sold over two million copies and completely messed up our <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/japanesehardwaresales">Japanese hardware sales</a> charts. <br />

Hideo Kojima snagged an accolade for himself during MTV's Game Awards. He was given the Lifetime Achievement Award for his <em>Metal Gear Solid</em> series. While such awards are usually given to retirees, Kojima had this to say: "I have to say, even though I received this award, let me state that I will not retire. I will continue to create games as long as I live." We're looking forward to these future titles. Hopefully, we'll see them on the PS3 ... with more bad-asses in them.<br /><br />Watch the video, after the cut.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/24/mtv-mgs4s-screaming-mantis-is-a-bad-motherf-r/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Hideo Kojima gets MTV Lifetime Achievement Award from Jade Raymond</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/24/mtv-mgs4s-screaming-mantis-is-a-bad-motherf-r/">Hideo Kojima gets MTV Lifetime Achievement Award from Jade Raymond</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 24 Nov 2008 07:45:00 EST. It's not surprising to see Sony placing PS3 advertisements in a place like Shibuya Station for the company has been making the Tokyo metro <a href="http://blog.wired.com/games/2008/06/sony-event-in-s.html">station tours</a> for a long time now. Shibuya, a high traffic destination with ties to trendy youth culture, seems to be a plausible locale for such advertisements. IGN's Anoop Gantayat, who took the recent photos of the ads, has translated the slogans and posted them on a <a href="http://www.andriasang.com/e/blogs/anoop/2008/11/19/ad_watch_ffxiii/">personal blog</a>.<br /><br />Here's a breakdown of what each one says. The all-caps words represent the over-sized characters in each poster. Clockwise from the top left: <em><br /></em>
<ul>
    <li><em>PS3 Console: "Everyone awakens here."</em></li>
    <li><em>MGS4: "Finish the MISSION to completion."</em></li>
    <li><em>LBP: "IMAGINATION that's learned from play."</em></li>
    <li><em>Blue Shirt Guy: N/A</em></li>
    <li><em>Lady Hugging PS3: N/A</em></li>
    <li><em>Girl with Blu-ray Disc: "Beauty like a DREAM."</em></li>
    <li><em>Guy with Controller: "The PRIDE of exceeding super realism."</em></li>
</ul>
It's an interesting campaign to get people to buy PS3s. There was also a PS poster with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/final-fantasy-xiii"><em>Final Fantasy XIII's</em></a> "Lightning" on it. The slogan on that ad reads: "The COURAGE to seek truth." Check that one out after the break. <br /><br />[via <a href="http://www.n4g.com/ps3/News-233675.aspx">N4G</a>]<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/19/new-ps3-ads-pop-up-all-over-tokyo-train-stations/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>New PS3 ads pop up all over Tokyo train stations</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/19/new-ps3-ads-pop-up-all-over-tokyo-train-stations/">New PS3 ads pop up all over Tokyo train stations</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 19 Nov 2008 17:15:00 EST. Those of you still keen on Metal Gear Online's multiplayer scene take note: The <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/01/mgo-meme-expansion-to-add-liquid-maps/">MEME expansion pack</a> will officially careen onto servers on Nov. 25 (pre-order it on Nov. 18, if you wish), priced at a not-too-obscene $9.99. It'll also be bundled with the previous GENE pack for $14.99, ideal for players still lean on downloadable content for Hideo Kojima's epic most Byzantine.<br /><br />Joining the battlefield (as seen in three new maps) are Mei Ling and perpetual source of mean, Liquid Ocelot. We look forward to shooting him in the, uh ... spleen?<br /><br />What a stupid, stupid post.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/17/metal-gear-onlines-meme-hitting-the-scene-on-nov-18/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Metal Gear Online's MEME hitting the scene on Nov. 25</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/17/metal-gear-onlines-meme-hitting-the-scene-on-nov-18/">Metal Gear Online's MEME hitting the scene on Nov. 25</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 17 Nov 2008 18:00:00 EST.
