We're doubtful the release of Lumines Supernova on PSN this fall will be met with the sort of stellar explosion the game's title implies, but a revered action puzzler -- with "block-dropping beats" to back it up -- can only be a good thing for PlayStation 3's downloadable games service. Still, there's not much about Supernova that could justify a purchase for current owners of one (or more!) of the franchise's iterations aside from a pair of new modes:

Dig Down Mode: Using the falling blocks, erase squares from a playfield already filled with blocks as you dig down to the bottom. Show off your digging skills as your completion time is ranked based on clearing 20 consecutive stages.

Sequencer Mode: Create your own background music using the sound loops provided in the "Sound Bank" -- drums, bass, synthesizer 1, synthesizer 2, and effects each come with 20 different loops.

In addition, Supernova will feature 40 unlockable skins in Challenge Mode, plus Skin Edit, Time Attack, and Puzzle / Mission modes, and a 2-player versus mode. Q Entertainment has yet to set a firm release date or price for Lumines Supernova, but it does appear to be a more complete game than the core experience on Xbox Live Arcade.

Gallery: Lumines Supernova

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Rumor: Space Channel 5 coming to Wii, other systems

Filed under: Retro, Nintendo Wii, Rhythm, Fashion

Between Nights and the upcoming Samba de Amigo, Sega seems pretty committed to remaking their classic franchises on the Wii. Soon there might be a third series to add to the list, as Japanese news site The Magic Box is reporting that Sega has announced Space Channel 5.0. The Wii remake of the stylish, rhythmic original will feature licensed songs from series fan Michael Jackson, according to the extremely brief report. The lack of detailed information and a Sega denial via IGN make us less than certain on the validity of this information, but we wouldn't be surprised (or sad) if this turns out to be true.

Don't own a Wii? Don't lose hope! In an interview with Wired, SC5 creator Tetsuya Mizuguchi hinted that he might be interested in bringing the Dreamcast game to modern download services, a la the upcoming Rez HD. "If I had a reason to remake Space Channel 5 on the new platforms, I will do that," Mizuguchi said. Of course, for that to work, he'd have to get the rights for the game back from Sega. Maybe if we all sing in unison the company will be convinced to make it happen.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Tetsuya Mizuguchi to build Virtual Tokyo in Second Life

Filed under: Culture, Mac, PC, Simulations, MMO, Business

Like everyone else, we're pretty sick of all the Second Life coverage; it seems like buying real estate in the massively multiplayer non-game is the modern, big-business equivalent of setting up a website for your dad's repair shop. Still, it's one thing when Mercedes sets up a virtual dealership, and a very different matter when Lumines and Rez's Tetsuya Mizuguchi decides to build a re-imagined Tokyo for the denizens of Linden Labs' mammoth world.

What makes Mizuguchi's Tokyo different than other architectural projects in Second Life is his intent in building the city. 1UP reports that rather than building an exact replica of the Japanese city, Mizuguchi wants to fashion his facsimile based on the perceptions of both locals and visitors. Speaking to 1UP, he states his hope that the project, which is a collaboration between himself and advertising firm Dentsu, can become a "museum of Japanese pop culture." We might need to dust off our Second Life avatars just to check it out when it launches.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Download new Lumines Live! content, save the world

Filed under: Microsoft Xbox 360, Puzzle, Rhythm

Lumines Live! (that's the name, we're not shouting) debuted on Xbox Live Arcade last October in a fragmented state, chopped apart by the 50MB file size limit enforced at the time. With several of the game's modes offered as optional and costly additions, it quickly became the hideous poster child for monstrous microtransactions. If you still feel that way, look away before we discuss two new downloadable content packs, one of which is designed to save the Earth.

Q Entertainment has announced that purchases of the SOS Charity Campaign Pack made between June 27th and July 17th will go towards climate protection organizations and causes. A remix of "Heavenly Star", the embarrassingly catchy tune by Japanese group Genki Rockets, is included in the pack as a celebration of the group's upcoming appearance at Al Gore's Live Earth musical event. If you haven't heard the song yet, consider that Lumines and Rez designer Tetsuya Mizuguchi came up with it as an answer to the question, "What kind of song would a 17-year old girl from outer space who has never landed on Earth sing to those living on Earth?"

For 350 MS Points (a rather awkward $4 and 37 and a half cents), you'll also receive "House66" by Sugiurumn, "Cosmic Humming" by Muku and the excellent "4x4 Bricks" by Techriders. Joining the SOS Charity Campaign pack on June 27th is the Booster Pack, more suited to those happy to sit in front of the TV and rearrange squares while the world outside melts. The Booster Pack contains 20 additional skins and features a "must-see" collaboration between Lumines, "Bloomy Girls" and Japanese "visual artist/musician" Masakatsu Takagi. It'll set you back 600 MS Points, or $7.50 in your pre-apocalyptic Earth money.

[via Q Entertainment press release]

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Mizuguchi working on Al Gore environmentalism project

On stage to discuss the game development process during Grasshopper Manufacture's 'Snake vs Zombie Vol. 2' event Saturday, Lumines producer Tetsuya Mizuguchi was instead questioned about his rumored involvement in an unannounced Al Gore project. Coy about details, Mizuguchi did confirm, "It's not going to be a video game. The concept derives from video games, and its something which the gaming generation will appreciate."

Like last year's film An Inconvenient Truth, the project will focus on environmental issues, including energy conservation. Mizuguchi hinted that the effort will play on our perspective of Earth. "I think that we would need to see our own planet from outer space. We see that there are no borderlines between the countries and simply notice how beautiful it is. And maybe then, we will be more conscious about the environment. It's about gaining a new perspective, like when we moved from 2D to 3D," suggested Mizuguchi.
In an era when industry professionals have been accused of being apathetic toward their own works, it's refreshing -- no matter which side of the environmental debate you stand on -- to see Mizuguchi devoting his talents to an issue he is so deeply concerned about ... or, perhaps you disagree. For those that do, fear not, Mizuguchi ain't just about huggin' trees. If your deepest concerns are about burning Watts on Q Entertainment's next "block-buster," know that Mizuguchi plans to announce a new game in the coming weeks. Homey's still gotta eat, ya heard? (Though we hear Paramount made some decent change off that aforementioned film. So there is green in going green...)

In other 'Snake vs Zombie' news, Kojima and Suda 51 are still playing dumb about their "Project S" collabo. "Oh, should we announce it here?" they teased. Expect to hear confirmation of the alleged Snatcher sequel in the coming days.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Rumor: Every Extend Extra Extreme Extricated in August for $10

Filed under: Sony PSP, Microsoft Xbox 360, Action, Rhythm

In concluding a rather positive preview of rhythmically exploding retina melter, Every Extend Extra Extreme, IGN seems to casually pin down the game's release window and pricing. Article author, Douglass C. Perry, writes that Q? Entertainment's next Xbox Live Arcade game will be in one piece "and cost about $10, or 800 Microsoft points" when it arrives this summer, "probably August."

When queried about this information, a Microsoft spokesperson couldn't determine its exact origin, offering that "Microsoft hasn't announced anything about the title at all, other than it exists." Though it seems possible that Q? Entertainment simply informed IGN directly, prefacing the information with words like "about" and "probably" seems to indicate that nobody really knows for sure. Mizuguchi fans looking forward to the more Extreme version of Every Extend Extra will have to extend their patience just a bit more.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Five new XBLA games shown, no Mizuguchi

Filed under: Arcade, Microsoft Xbox 360, GDC

Serious cat is looking to make some more appearances in the future for XBLA Wednesdays. The original Every Extend game was developed by Omega for the PC (the freeware version is here).

Described as a "trippy visual journey of self destruction," E4 will enable you to play with your own tunes -- or, according to the peoplespeak of Q's press release, "wiz ur muzik" -- and against others in an online versus mode. He gives two reasons for the division: the 50 MB limit on XBLA title (understandable) and the customizable nature of the game (not understandable). Mizuguchi considers it the business model of the future.

When IGN presses him on the cost issue, Mizuguchi pauses. After IGN pushes on, Mizuguchi furthers his belief in the piece-wise business model. Theoretically, we don't mind the model so much as the price, and unfortunately IGN never gets Mizuguchi talking about the release date and pricing for the VS CPU and Mission / Puzzle pack.

So is Lumines holy like a saint or hole-y like swiss cheese? Q Entertainment still hasn't responded to our request on release date and pricing details. The Advanced Pack game is now on Xbox Live for 600 MS points ($7.50 USD).

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Next-gen Rez sequel in the cards? In discussing next-generation possibilities, Mizuguchi noted that he was looking to make "a Rez kind of experience." When further pressed on the matter, Mizuguchi asserted that, if SEGA were to approach him to make a Rez sequel, he is "currently seriously considering it. It's always there. I'm always thinking about it."

If the sequel were to be made, on what console? Let's examine the possibilities:

Nintendo Wii: Mizuguchi said he was interested in "high-def sounds and visuals," a selling point Nintendo has side-stepped. Mizuguchi both complement and critiqued the Wiimote, calling it "a very special controller," although noting its uniqueness may impede the chances of porting to multiplatforms ("because you want to give the game the best chance" for exposure and success). That said, the Wiimote's motion sensor could make a great fit for the original Rez's control scheme. Mizuguchi has worked with Nintendo before, bringing Meteos to the Nintendo DS.

Microsoft Xbox 360: Mizuguchi has supported the Xbox 360 with Ninety-Nine Nights and Lumines Live. The developer noted that he is looking into "what kind of games [he] can make in terms of high-def sounds and visuals."

Sony PlayStation 3: Also capable of high-definition visuals and sounds, the DualShake has limited motion sensor that could complement the original Rez's control scheme. The original Rez appeared on PlayStation 2 (as a port from the Dreamcast), so there is precedent there. However, the PlayStation 3 controller does lack a rumble feature, which was key to the first Rez.

Rez was listed among the top 10 hidden gems of this generation, and for a reason: it's a unique game big on atmosphere a finely executed. A next-generation iteration would make us giddy, but we must ask: will it have a trance vibrator?

[Via PS3 Fanboy]

[update 1: Added more to the PlayStation 3 discussion: clarified that the "original" Rez is on the Dreamcast and that the PS2 is a port. Also noted, as it needs to be said, that the PS3 DualShake lacks a rumble feature.]

[update 2: Further clarified its Dreamcast, and not PS2, origins.
