Six years after its initial release, Adam Foster's acclaimed Half-Life 2 mod MINERVA has been re-released as a free "Director's Cut" version on Steam.

MINERVA is an atmospheric first-person adventure game in which players explore an underground Convent base with help from Minerva, an unseen companion character. The mod was impressive enough to land Foster a job at Valve, where he still works today. Friendly pressure from co-workers resulted in the game's eventual overhaul and Steam release.

Foster notes that the Director's Cut boasts "tweaked visuals, bug fixes, better puzzles and all kinds of subtle improvements." MINERVA is available as a free download, though it requires players to have Half-Life 2: Episode One installed in order to play it.
Half-Life 2 mod 'Minerva' gets Director's Cut on Steam originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 01 May 2013 23:00:00 EST. The add-on also gives a "loot value" to every item, which influences each player's new treasure hunter ranking.
Legend of Grimrock gets unofficial 'Master Quest' add-on originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 17 Mar 2013 16:30:00 EST. This is supposedly because the client must sync simulation data back to the server on a regular basis, in order to ease the computational load on the user's machine and to ensure the simulation as a whole runs smoothly.

Though not demonstrated in the video above, AzzerUK claims to have disabled that disconnection timer, and that playing an offline city for extended periods of time resulted in no issues with the simulation itself. Since SimCity does not support local saves in any way, it is not possible for AzzerUK to actually save anything that happens in his offline city, but the important thing is that the simulation reportedly did not come to a screeching halt after being unable to sync with the server.

The modder/hacker also claims to have enabled SimCity's debug mode, which allows for cities to be edited beyond their typically imposed borders. Though clipping and texture mapping issues are easily visible in the above clip, the traditionally impossible highways created at least appear to function properly. This supposes that, at least theoretically, the game is capable of supporting city sizes that are larger than what is currently available.
Rumor: SimCity modded to disable disconnection timer, open debug mode originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 14 Mar 2013 20:15:00 EST. Andrews has released a video showing off Crytek's initial suit-powered shooter being controlled with the head-tracking system and a Mag II gun controller, and says that Crysis Wars and CryEngine 3 compatibility aren't far behind.

There's still a bit of work to be done, as Andrews notes the head-tracking isn't quite right yet with the crosshairs on the screen. Still, it look impressive, and considering how far the Rift itself has come, both software and hardware are getting polished up. The Rift headset went out to developers starting last year, with a consumer version supposed to arrive sometime in the future.
Modder adds Oculus Rift support to Crysis and CryEngine 3 originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 27 Feb 2013 02:00:00 EST. The design itself looks simple, yet elegant. It's also really shiny.

Cruse put in a blue LED for the power button, mounted a shield on the side and adorned the opposite side with the famous A and wings that rest upon the brow of Captain America's mask. Sadly, Cruse doesn't go into much detail in his blog post on how intricate this mod really is - does the shield detach? Is the shield custom made or store-bought? Can we wear the shield as a hat? We have important questions that need answers!
Captain America Xbox 360 mod inspired by The Avengers assembled, photographed originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 10 Dec 2012 23:59:00 EST. Not for the developers, necessarily, but for the players. All the big, end-of-the-year games are out, we're marathoning AAA titles and indie darlings alike, and our backlogs are on the verge of becoming sentient. It's about time you take a break, while simultaneously knocking out two games at once: Team Fortress 2 and The Binding of Isaac.

If you haven't spotted this mod that creates a 3D, first-person Binding of Isaac world within Team Fortress 2, give it a look now in the video above. It's even Edmund McMillen-approved.

The mod comes from YouTube user lampenpam, and while it isn't complete, US players can log into the Super Zombie Fortress server, where the Isaac map is in rotation. The server is run by Jonas "Mecha the Slag" Kærlev, the creator of Wind Waker-inspired indie game A Hat in Time.

Technically, with that final link, we've just given you three games to observe while letting your batteries recharge. Literally, we assume - the convenience of those wireless controllers can be such a pain.
Binding of Isaac in a 3D, first-person Team Fortress 2 mod originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 06 Dec 2012 02:00:00 EST. It didn't, but a tweet from id Software founder John Carmack suggests he hasn't forgotten the promise he made to mod fans one year ago, nor the frustration of letting them down:

"BFG work pushed the Rage tools, but Real Soon Now. I hope. Sigh. I think we have made poor decisions on this all year."

Doom 3 BFG Edition launched on October 16 in the US, and now id is most likely focused on the development of Doom 4. If id is still serious about pushing Doom 4 onto the Oculus Rift, those mod tools better come out mighty soon, lest we never see them at all - when prioritizing development for either a crazy futuristic headset or modding tools for a year-old lukewarm game, the choice seems to jump right out at you.
Carmack: Rage mod tools hit 'real soon' despite a year of 'poor decisions' originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 24 Oct 2012 19:00:00 EST. The floating Companion Cube effect was accomplished by ripping out the magnets in a floating globe, and the cube itself was created to proper size and weight specifications.

The gun itself is not custom, however - it's store bought. The process of creating the Companion Cube and applying the magnetic housing to the Portal gun itself is pretty interesting, all of which you can check out in the video above and through the source link below.
Hackaday's custom Portal gun levitates a Companion Cube originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 12 Oct 2012 16:00:00 EST. One year on, they've done it again with (the unofficial) Tecmo Super Bowl 2013, featuring NFL teams and players fully up-to-date as of September 2. It's like one of those roster updates for Madden NFL 13, except for a 21-year-old NES classic.

It's surely an insane and time-draining undertaking to update Tecmo Super Bowl like this, let alone do it for two years running. If that inspires you to join in with the retro-current football fun, all you need is an emulator and the ROM file, and both can be found at TecmoBowl.org. Oh, and not a single measly dime because it's free.
Tecmo Super Bowl 2013 gives classic game up-to-date NFL rosters originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 06 Sep 2012 14:00:00 EST. Today, its long-developed sequel is finally up for pre-order on Steam, attached with a very convenient 'October 2012' release window. Yup, we'll eat our pumpkin hat if Natural Selection 2 isn't out by October 31. Until then, the game remains in beta with over 40,000 active players according to developer Unknown Worlds.

Natural Selection 2 now offers a tactical team-based shooter in a proprietary engine, with one side the marines, the other the aliens. One member of each team plays the "Commander" role, overseeing the fight from above and influencing it through RTS features like defenses, buildings, and upgrades.

Pre-orders on Steam are being rewarded with Natural Selection 2's deluxe version. That includes the official soundtrack, a digital art book, and some in-game armor amongst other goodies, all for $24.95. Sadly, there's been an oversight regarding a pumpkin hat.

Update: Clarified release window and corrected engine information.
Natural Selection 2 makes it to Steam, set for October release [update] originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 05 Sep 2012 14:00:00 EST. Gamers are still creating cool things with LittleBigPlanet 2: like this impressive Gradius port, which brings the side-scrolling 2D shooter into the world of Sackboy and his many toys.

This player-made creation has multiple upgrade options and weapon types, a few different stages to play through, and even a few well-made boss fights. If you want to try it out yourself, you can download it via LittleBigPlanet 2 right now.
Gradius remade in a LittleBigPlanet 2 level originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 30 Aug 2012 01:30:00 EST. The custom "Super Angry Birds" controller above is a complicated USB mod using wood and gyros. Hacks were definitely involved.

You adjust trajectory using the wooden sling, then pull back on the plastic bird to adjust power and let 'er rip. Simple. And if you're wondering how this setup handles those birds with special abilities, you only need watch the above video for 20 seconds or so. You love Minecraft's neo-retro styling but wish it flexed more of your super-expensive gaming PC's copious muscle? Well, first of all, you need to speak up; it's very difficult to hear someone through the Internet. Secondly, Sonic Ether's Unbelievable Shaders mod for Minecraft is exactly what you're looking for.

As seen above, the mod adds dynamic shading effects as well as more realistic movement to vegetation and fire, and best of all, hyper-pretty transparent water cubes. While not yet fully optimized, the latest build of the mod is available here. Sonic Ether warns on his Facebook page that the mod is not bug free and should be used with caution. It appears you can.

The winning design - as demonstrated by "Mauricio" in the video above - sports a modded Ultrastik joystick as the mouse, and about a billion Sanwa buttons in LED housing for illumination. It may look odd, but it apparently does everything a keyboard and mouse can, using one USB input.

As it's a fan mod, you can't actually purchase this device. Thankfully for you, crazy person, the team behind Octodad just released "OctodadEditor," which is apparently "the basis of the editor for Octodad: Dadliest Catch" (the Octodad sequel, obviously).

Sure, the editor's a bit on the buggy side (indie development, folks!), and it's PC-only, but just think about all those secret octopus ghosts! Someone's gotta make that madness happen! The site reports the PC version will get some extra TLC in mod support and a special, mouse-driven user interface.

In addition to the UI tailoring, the PC will support mods through the underlying Unreal Engine, though none will be available at launch. More than 2 million mods have been downloaded from Steam's Skyrim Workshop, and players have published more than 2,500 mods since its launch on February 2, Bethesda says. Mods range from Valve's own Fall of the Space Core, to graphics updates, varied weapons options, mechanics changes and posh mudcrabs, as seen in the "best of" video above.

Skyrim outsold all Steam games three-to-one in its first month, and it outsold all exclusive titles for both PS3 and Xbox 360, Bethesda claims. The average Steam user has played Skyrim for more than 75 hours, which is a ridiculously high average. Modern Warfare 3 outsold Skyrim for the year, but Skyrim was the second-most-successful title of 2011, beating other blockbusters such as EA's Battlefiled 3. And it doesn't even have multiplayer!
Continue reading Skyrim's PC fans are modding the crap out of it with Steam Workshop

Skyrim's PC fans are modding the crap out of it with Steam Workshop originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 14 Feb 2012 22:00:00 EST. As far as anyone could tell, the mod was a cute Easter Egg and the sphere itself didn't do anything -- at least, it hasn't done anything yet.

YouTuber Memborable's video -- the one right up there -- shows where to find the Space Core and runs down what is does (and doesn't do). He then accesses the console and types "help portal," which pulls up a list of all the things relating to "portal" in Skyrim. One of these things is titled "portal2quest."

Valve hasn't confirmed any Portal-themed quests in Skyrim, but as the mod is titled "Vol. 1," we wouldn't be surprised to see more content, and perhaps even, yes, an entire quest.

[Thanks, Jarrett!]
Skyrim's Fall of the Space Core mod may be hiding a Portal 2 quest originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 08 Feb 2012 14:00:00 EST. But series fans know that they can take the game a few steps further into crazytown with mods, as we've seen over the past few months. Bethesda knows this too, clearly, as the developer is releasing a Creation Kit sometime soon which will allow users to more easily mod and share creations for Skyrim.

Interestingly, the company notes in its developer diary that it's "going to keep looking for ways to get mods to more people, and hopefully one day to our console audience," but comes up short of saying anything more concrete. Frankly, we'd love to be able to snap into a Skyrim with our fellow Macho Man fans out there (oooooh yeah!), but we simply don't have a PC strong enough.

The Creation Kit will support Steam Workshop, allowing mods to be shared via Steam users easily. We'd suggest pushing that Steam Workshop support to PS3 given Steam's past with Sony's home console, but then we also know of Skyrim's ugly past with the PS3. Oh well, maybe next game, right?
Skyrim's Creation Kit available 'soon' on PC; latest vid offers a first look originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 01 Feb 2012 11:30:00 EST. Some new Minecraft maps may do just that.

Red Dead Redemption's Armadillo and Blackwater towns have been recreated in Minecraft and can be downloaded over on fan site Planet Minecraft. You could improve upon the original design, tear it all down or just talk to your computer with an odd-yet-charming old-west accent. Really, it's up to you.
Red Dead Redemption's Blackwater and Armadillo recreated in Minecraft originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 30 Jan 2012 17:00:00 EST.
