Created by YouTube user jmoorfoot4, the mod gives players the ability to roam the streets of Liberty City as R2-D2.

As the video above demonstrates, R2-D2 is just as pushy and capable of destruction as Niko Bellic ever was. The SDK will allow players to mod and create their own maps, and is in development by Valve veteran Mike Durand.

The kit will include a few maps from Counter-Strike 1.6 that didn't make it into Counter-Strike: Source, Valve's Gabe Newell announced on the podcast Seven Day Cooldown. The site reports the PC version will get some extra TLC in mod support and a special, mouse-driven user interface.

In addition to the UI tailoring, the PC will support mods through the underlying Unreal Engine, though none will be available at launch. More than 2 million mods have been downloaded from Steam's Skyrim Workshop, and players have published more than 2,500 mods since its launch on February 2, Bethesda says. Mods range from Valve's own Fall of the Space Core, to graphics updates, varied weapons options, mechanics changes and posh mudcrabs, as seen in the "best of" video above.

Skyrim outsold all Steam games three-to-one in its first month, and it outsold all exclusive titles for both PS3 and Xbox 360, Bethesda claims. The average Steam user has played Skyrim for more than 75 hours, which is a ridiculously high average. Modern Warfare 3 outsold Skyrim for the year, but Skyrim was the second-most-successful title of 2011, beating other blockbusters such as EA's Battlefiled 3. As far as anyone could tell, the mod was a cute Easter Egg and the sphere itself didn't do anything -- at least, it hasn't done anything yet.

YouTuber Memborable's video -- the one right up there -- shows where to find the Space Core and runs down what is does (and doesn't do). He then accesses the console and types "help portal," which pulls up a list of all the things relating to "portal" in Skyrim. One of these things is titled "portal2quest."

Valve hasn't confirmed any Portal-themed quests in Skyrim, but as the mod is titled "Vol. 1," we wouldn't be surprised to see more content, and perhaps even, yes, an entire quest.

[Thanks, Jarrett!]
Skyrim's Fall of the Space Core mod may be hiding a Portal 2 quest originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 08 Feb 2012 14:00:00 EST. But series fans know that they can take the game a few steps further into crazytown with mods, as we've seen over the past few months. Bethesda knows this too, clearly, as the developer is releasing a Creation Kit sometime soon which will allow users to more easily mod and share creations for Skyrim.

Interestingly, the company notes in its developer diary that it's "going to keep looking for ways to get mods to more people, and hopefully one day to our console audience," but comes up short of saying anything more concrete. Frankly, we'd love to be able to snap into a Skyrim with our fellow Macho Man fans out there (oooooh yeah!), but we simply don't have a PC strong enough.

The Creation Kit will support Steam Workshop, allowing mods to be shared via Steam users easily. We'd suggest pushing that Steam Workshop support to PS3 given Steam's past with Sony's home console, but then we also know of Skyrim's ugly past with the PS3. Oh well, maybe next game, right?
Skyrim's Creation Kit available 'soon' on PC; latest vid offers a first look originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 01 Feb 2012 11:30:00 EST. Some new Minecraft maps may do just that.

Red Dead Redemption's Armadillo and Blackwater towns have been recreated in Minecraft and can be downloaded over on fan site Planet Minecraft. What do you do? If you're us, you have to clean your controller. If you're renowned modder Ben Heckendorn, you go into your workshop and build a Hot Pocket pocket that clips to your Xbox controller.

Heck's device is literally the most impressive Hot Pocket technology we've ever seen, allowing the hungry gamer to slowly slide the sandwich out of the holder as it is eaten. It is also the only Hot Pocket technology we've ever seen.

We must admit, as fans of the Periborg "Shock-C" gaming food delivery tech, we're impressed.
We often kid about the grim future we all know is humanity's destiny, when the robots rise up and take the planet from us. We never try to think about what it's like to be them; what it's like to be in their chrome feet.

A new mod for GTA IV on the PC from William Peddell brings us closer to understanding our future nemesis, replacing protagonist Niko Bellic with an eerily accurate Terminator. Peddell is quite adept at custom skins, having produced a number of mods celebrating Resident Evil, Batman: Arkham City, Uncharted and many more. His mod profile page showcases hours of hard work.

But in the end we're partial to his "Terminator T-1" mod, since it's such a strong teaching aid -- especially in the video above. When the robots rebel, we'll know that standing directly in front of their guns isn't a viable course to victory.
Terminator T-1 mod gives us a taste of our future in GTA IV originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 12 Jan 2012 04:00:00 EST. Not to be confused with iCade's recently announced official controller, Ben Heck's preemptive strike against iCade's $80 enclosure is made possible through reverse-engineering the original iCade unit. We suppose Heck's version isn't a more prudent alternative, but that doesn't make a magician's work any less interesting.

Heck's game pad features eight face buttons, a pair of triggers on the top and a d-pad on the left side. It's more function than form but, as you can see, it gets the job done.
Ben Heck turns an iCade into an iPhone gamepad before iCade can originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 12 Jan 2012 01:00:00 EST. Keen with desire to own a golden Nunchuk to match the golden Wii Remote released for The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword? Well, you can't get an official golden Nunchuk outside of Japan's Club Nintendo, but that can't stop you from making your own.

Enter Reddit user alycenwonderland, who crafted a very slick custom Nunchuk that, dare we say it, looks even better than the official peripheral. Of course, should you decide to make one yourself, it will likely take hours of monotonous work before you can reap the sweet payoff -- not unlike the latest Zelda.
Homemade golden Nunchuk is a real treasure originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 11 Jan 2012 02:00:00 EST.
One of the main problems faced by hackers and modders creating portable versions of home consoles is, well, portability. Making something you can hold in your hands isn't exactly an easy task, but creating something that also fits in your messenger bag is a tall order, especially when hacking together a handheld version of something with a disc drive.

ModRetro member Jonathan Shine's solution to this problem is as ingenious as it is simple: If the disc drive is too thick, don't use it. The Envision, Shine's homemade portable Gamecube, kicks spinning media to the curb in favor of an SD card loaded with what we're sure are completely legal and legitimate backups of games he already owns. The device measures approximately 1.375 by 6.5 by 4.125 inches and will run for 2 to 3 hours on a single charge. Check out this thread at ModRetro for complete build specs and more pictures of the finished product.
The chiptune music scene is known for its creative use of antiquated gaming hardware, and you'd be hard pressed to find a better example of "antiquated" than 1977's Atari 2600. Through a clever mix of custom software, handmade cartridges and three Boss stomp boxes, chiptune artist/modder cTrix has created the gATARI2600, an instrument as massive as it is massively impressive.
Check out the video above for cTrix's explanation of the device's components, as well as footage of the monstrosity (the instrument, not cTrix) in action at Blip Fest 2011. Personally, we're still holding out for an Intellivision viola.
cTrix's gATARI2600 chiptune "guitar" originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 01 Jan 2012 11:00:00 EST. Among the modders eagerly tinkering away at Fallout: New Vegas, arguably "correcting" what they see as deficiencies in the original design, is ... lead designer J.E. Sawyer. Sawyer has developed an optional patch for the PC version, which reduces the level cap to 35, halves XP acquisition, cuts water and food drop rates, and tweaks a bunch of other variables, all detailed on Sawyer's Formspring. You can download the mod here.

So why is this a mod instead of an official patch? "In addition to technical reasons," Sawyer said, "some of the mechanics changes make the game significantly more difficult (base health / stim changes) or at least more of a hassle (carry weight, stims having weight, H2O/SLP/FOD rate increase). I'd rather have people opt-in to those changes than make them the default in a patch." This is also something Sawyer is doing in his spare time, as nobody is officially working on New Vegas anymore.
Fallout: New Vegas designer makes his own unofficial mod originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 30 Dec 2011 23:10:00 EST.
While we're not sure if the Android version of GTA 3 is as disappointing as it is on iPad, it does have one perk over its iOS cousin: mods. Many have discovered modding the Android port is much like modding the PC game -- one can simply add files to the directory on the SD card.

As a result, it's fairly easy to add custom cars -- a souped-up taxi can be seen in the video above -- and textures, granted one is familiar with modding on the PC. One XDA developer thread in particular has tons of files and custom cars if you'd like to start sprucing up Rockstar's classic game.
New cars, textures modded into Grand Theft Auto 3 on Android originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 30 Dec 2011 05:02:00 EST. Bethesda forum user Arisu has created the Skyrim Acceleration Layer which, in his own words, "works mostly by rewriting some x87 FPU code and inlining a whole ton of useless getter functions along the critical paths because the developers at Bethesda, for some reason, compiled the game without using any of the optimization flags for release builds." You get all that?

We're unable to test the mod ourselves, though forum users are reporting frame rate increases in more graphically intense areas (Markarth, in particular). The mod features the motion controls he's shown off in previous videos, along with additional voice controls for Skyrim. This means one important thing: Shouts!

The voice controls go even further, enabling the player to switch weapons and access favorites. There are also some voice commands not featured in the video, including "Hello" to start a conversation with an NPC and "Journal" to access the quest log.
For the past several years, ORM Entertainment has been working on a simulator called Titanic: Lost in the Darkness. Beginning life as a mod for the original Crysis, T:LITD (just rolls of the tongue, doesn't it) has been updated and refined and reiterated upon until eventually being moved to CryEngine 3, where it has achieved its current, staggeringly gorgeous state, as seen in the trailer above.

Now, when we say "staggeringly gorgeous," we don't mean "Oh hey, that looks pretty good for a mod." We mean that we would rather watch this video again than look at a Christina Hendricks made out of diamonds, standing on top of a unicorn riding a rainbow over a waterfall in space. Hopefully Titanic: Lost in the Darkness' next reincarnation will be playable and available to the masses.
Render me like one of your French girls: The Titanic in CryEngine 3 originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 27 Nov 2011 18:00:00 EST. It's strange, isn't it? The day after we're supposed to give thanks for all the special things in life, we subject ourselves to unknown abuse all in the name of saving a buck. Let's instead give thanks for indie game projects that you won't ever find under the heel of a particularly ill-tempered Walmart shopper on this or any other Black Friday. Like Dear Esther for example, the promising Half Life 2 mod turned real boy, coming to Steam ... when exactly?

The more calendrically challenged amongst you may not have realized this, but Dear Esther has already missed its proposed summer 2011 release window so you'll be glad to know it hasn't been summarily forgotten. Developer Dan Pinchbeck says the project has been successfully ported to the Portal 2 engine, and discussions with Valve indicate a release "very likely to be either the end of January or the beginning of February next year." Right alongside Episode 3, right guys?

We'll be honest: we're equal parts impressed and creeped out by the video above, which depicts a hacked version of Super Smash Bros. Brawl with an additional character, Waluigi. We're impressed because, hey, dude's totally not in that game -- remember, it's a hack -- and we're also impressed with the whole execution of it. These guys really love themselves some Brawl!

As for the whole being creeped out thing, isn't it obvious? Just look at him! Waluigi is the creepiest.
Hackers add Waluigi to Super Smash Bros.
Remember Command & Conquer: Renegade, the first-person shooter set in the C&C universe that came out back in 2002? One group of fans apparently remembers it so fondly that they're remaking the title as a game called Renegade X, going so far as to not only recreate settings and levels from the title in a more modern graphics engine, but also create new content for the mix of real-time strategy and FPS action gameplay.

The fanmade game actually looks like it's coming along well, and there's a version available for download right now (though it requires an updated copy of Unreal Tournament 3 to play). The full final game won't be out until "when its [sic] done" according to the video above, but hopefully that will be right on schedule. We wouldn't want these guys to have to remake the infamous "Havoc takes on Westwood" video, too, for releasing as late as the original team.

Sure, it seems easy enough: Play your Wii games on an Android tablet with an Xbox 360 controller. Technology! But underneath that simple premise is a complicated reality. First, you need to run the Wii games on a PC using the open-source Dolphin emulator. From there, you're going to stream the video to the Android tablet using the Splashtop Remote Desktop HD app on Android. YouTuber Obiwan222222 tossed an Xbox 360 controller in, but it's unclear if he's controlling the tablet's VNC client with it, or the PC directly (we're guessing the latter).

If this sounds similar to GameStop's planned tablet, featuring Spawn Labs-powered retail game streaming, or OnLive's upcoming tablet "Player" software, we agree. Mostly, it seems like the future ... a laggy, buggy future but the future nevertheless. Technology!
Technology: Play Wii on an Android tablet with an Xbox 360 controller originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 19 Sep 2011 21:20:00 EST. Love the fancy graphics of Grand Theft Auto IV but hate the dearth of neon colors and cheap, plentiful cocaine? Keep an eye on Team RAGE's "Vice City Rage" mod -- which brings the Miami flavor to GTA IV -- due this Christmas. Happy birthday, Jesus. Liberty City wasn't built in a beta, but when the Grand Theft Auto 4 iCEnhancer mod is finally done, we bet it will be more beautiful than Rome itself (How's that for a trip around the world?). iCEnhancer has released photos of its 1.3 beta, in the Second Phase and Pre-release stage, and some of these screens are looking better than reality. If anything, they certainly smell better than reality.

Check out the goods on the iCEnhancer Facebook page, or take a peek at a video from the 1.2.5 version, which is only .0.5-percent less mind-blowing than the current beta.
Grand Theft Auto 4 has never looked better (but will in the next iCEnhancer mod, we're sure) originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 13 Aug 2011 01:00:00 EST. Traveling into the late 80s? Want to take a game that features modern gameplay conceits but an era-appropriate graphical style back with you? Of course, we've all been there. Next time you rev up to 88 mph, you should plan on sliding this custom Minecraft adventure map, Mine 4 Dead, into your DeLorean glove box.
The first episode, Blockhawk Down, has got all the zombie killing and pill gobbling of undead redeadening simulator Left 4 Dead, but with a retro look that won't completely terrify the pre-90s, Debbie Gibson-loving cro-magnons you'll encounter during your chrono-vacation. This brainchild of Chicago artist Kate Ouwenga is available for free right here, but you can see it in action in the video above.
Mine 4 Dead is exactly what you're hoping it is originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 04 Aug 2011 00:45:00 EST.
It's difficult to imagine The Shining being any more terrifying than its original release, but Duke Nukem has never cared much about impossible odds, and it's taken on the challenge like a champ. Film fanatic and analyst Rob Ager has compiled a video dissecting the spatial anomalies in The Shining's Overlook Hotel, as discovered through a Duke Nukem 3D mod attempting to recreate the building. Ager describes the impossible hallways, windows, apartments and stairways littering the Overlook that lend Kubrick's movie a subconsciously eerie, something's not quite right vibe.

Ager's detailed analysis borders on crazed obsession, but it provides thrilling insight into a classic film -- we just think he should take a vacation after this one. After all, all work and no play...
Duke Nukem finally figures out what's wrong in The Shining's Overlook Hotel originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 24 Jul 2011 18:30:00 EST. We've long held the opinion that the only thing standing between our world and its inevitable ruin is the creation of a portable version of Mojang's remarkably addictive Minecraft. We're still waiting on the Xperia Play to bring about said apocalypse, but it seems a Nintendo DS modder by the name of Smelaum has beaten Sony to the punch, releasing a demo of a homebrew application aptly titled Minecraft DS.

The software, which is demonstrated in the video above, is fairly basic: Players can only add or remove blocks, and cannot save their towering megastructures. Smelaum hopes to bolster the homebrew with saving and terrain generation -- hopefully those features will be implemented before Smelaum is incapacitated by Notch's shadowy cabal of trademark lawyers. (We're kidding, of course; those clearly don't exist.)
Modder builds homebrew version of Minecraft on DS originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 14 Jul 2011 18:00:00 EST. Ben Heck is truly a master of manipulating manufactured goods, and nothing proves his mechanical prowess more than his latest creation: an Xbox 360 disc changer. Heck has taken the 360's DVD drive and placed it inside a heavily modified Sony CD changer. He then uses an Arduino microcontroller to control disc selection, and solders the whole kit-and-caboodle onto the 360's motherboard.
Turns out the guy who created the "Free2BeKicked" mod for Team Fortress 2 (that kicks players who joined after the free-to-play changeover off of private servers completely) doesn't have the courage of his convictions. His name is Asher Baker, and Giant Bomb held a quick interview with him, in which he says he's not in favor of banning new players just because they wanted to check out a free game.

He does, however, say that "a community needs a barrier to entry," and "if there is no barrier to entry -- and no recourse against those people [who take advantage] -- it could be bad." Users are unhappy about the mod, though Valve hasn't made a ruling on it just yet (and while Baker says the company probably wouldn't be happy with it, it is running on private servers, presumably out of Valve's reach). Baker says he's even received death threats about the mod, but given that this is a game about shooting, stabbing and generally blowing other players up, who knows how serious those are.

In the end, Baker says free-to-play could go either way for the game's community. "It's brought in lots of new players, but I'm not sure it's worth the long-term cost," he says. "I think that once the droves of inexperienced players dies down, we're going to be left with a (slow) steady stream of new players, but primarily just cheaters and people evading server bans."
Team Fortress 2 Free2BeKicked mod creator speaks on F2P transition originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 07 Jul 2011 23:00:00 EST.

Go on, take a guess at the starting point for this custom made figure. If we tell you that the link came from Halo.Bungie.Org, does that help? If you guessed a Covenant Elite, you're right! The core body of this Mass Effect inspired geth consists of two different Convenant Elite figures from McFarlane's Halo line.

If you then went on to guess that the modder also used shot gun parts from a Gears of War accessory, that the pulse rifle was made from spare Halo parts, and that the hoses on his back came from a Mr. Freeze action figure, well then we'd say you know a little too much about your various action figures there, Kreskin.

You'll never geth how this Mass Effect action figure was made originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 07 Jul 2011 03:30:00 EST. Don't expect any authoring tools for Battlefield 3 when it launches on October 25. During an interview, EA senior VP Patrick Soderlund explains that it's due to the complexity of the Frostbite engine.

"Well, as of now, we're not going to make any modding tools, no. If you look at the Frostbite Engine and how complex it is, it's going to be very difficult to mod the game," he said. "Because of the nature of the setup of levels, the destruction and all those things, it's quite tricky. So we think it's going to be too big of a challenge for people to make a mod." Sounds like a dare to us!
Of course, that's not to say DICE won't release mod tools down the line -- just that, as of launch, it looks like you'll have to simply settle for the game you bought.
Battlefield 3 won't have any mod tools at launch originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 06 Jul 2011 22:00:00 EST. It's been a long time coming, but the Call of Duty 4 "Galactic Warfare" mod has finally been deemed ... er ... final. In the works for the last couple of years, the mod takes the classic shooter to a galaxy far, far away, injecting it with Star Wars characters, weapons and locations, even adding its own killstreaks (including airstrikes with TIE bombers and Y-Wings!). There are seven maps, featuring familiar locations like Bespin and Mos Eisley.
The mod is available as a free download from ModDB.
COD4 Star Wars mod 'Galactic Warfare' hits final release originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 05 Jul 2011 19:35:00 EST. The iCEnhancer mod is one for the graphics enthusiasts. The full engine mod adds several beautiful effects and higher resolution textures to the PC version of GTA IV. An overview of update 1.2.5, which is "almost done" according to mod creator Hayssam Keilany, can be seen in the video above.
Continue reading GTA 4 engine mod looks gorgeous; latest update adds cloudy weather

GTA 4 engine mod looks gorgeous; latest update adds cloudy weather originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 05 Jul 2011 00:45:00 EST.
