Sony's launched a public request to name the upcoming PlayStation Vita version of <em>ModNation Racers</em> in a recent <a href="http://blog.us.playstation.com/2011/08/08/modnation-racers-suggest-a-name-for-the-upcoming-ps-vita-game/">US PlayStation Blog post</a>. Our first inclination was to suggest "The PlayStation Vita Version of ModNation Racers" in the allotted comments section, but the name lacked a certain <em>pizazz</em> we were hoping for.<br />
<br />
After thinking awhile longer, we figured out an absolutely perfect one: "ModNation Racers: Vita!" Take that, professional marketing guys!<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/modnation-racers-ngp/">Modnation Racers for PS Vita (E3 2011)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/modnation-racers-ngp/#4184861"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/dolor03-1307030929_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/modnation-racers-ngp/#4184862"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/dolor04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/modnation-racers-ngp/#4184863"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/espresso01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/modnation-racers-ngp/#4184865"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/nato01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/modnation-racers-ngp/#4184869"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/shadow03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/09/name-the-new-modnation-racers-vita-game/">Name the new ModNation Racers Vita game</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 09 Aug 2011 16:00:00 EST. More <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/modnation-racers"><em>ModNation Racers</em></a> DLC <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/02/modnation-racers-reaches-2-million-user-created-items-more-dlc/">was promised</a>, and here it is: a Water World parts pack and a new fire-engine themed kart plus racer are <a href="http://blog.us.playstation.com/2011/06/27/modnation-monday-show-us-what-you%E2%80%99ve-got/">now available in the game</a> for your microtransaction purchase. "Backburn" is a fire fighter racer, and he's got a miniature fire engine to drive, available for $1 each or a 25 percent off if you buy them together.<br />
<br />
The Water World parts pack allows players to insert rafts, slides and even an inflatable shark into their <em>ModNation Racers</em> courses. That pack is $6.99, and joins the Big City Career Extension Pack and Arctic Career Extension Pack (both $9.99) in the PS3 and PSP versions of the game.<br />
<br />
Finally, the PlayStation blog is also awarding the "Moddies" this month, celebrating the best user-created content from the game. You can <a href="http://community.eu.playstation.com/t5/ModNation-Racers-One-Year/bd-p/bUS_MNR1stAnniversary">see the results over here</a> -- some of those tracks and mods are very, very well done, and all of them are up for download right now. Congrats to all the honorees!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/30/new-modnation-racers-dlc-rolls-out/">New Modnation Racers DLC rolls out</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 30 Jun 2011 01:30:00 EST. When the PS Vita finally makes its way into the public's hands later on this year, Sony will have at least one big ace up its sleeve right away on release day. A version of <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/modnation-racers"><em>ModNation Racers</em></a> will be out and ready to buy with the console, and all of the tracks and vehicles (that's <em>all</em> of them) currently available on the PS3 and PSP will be available to download and play right away. That's a ton of content, and just picking up <em>ModNation Racers</em> gets you access to all of it, a pretty clever way to fill out what might be a pretty sparse launch library for the PS Vita.<br />
<br />
That in itself might be enough to sell the game -- a racing title is hard to mess up even on a brand new handheld, and of course this one plays just as well as all of the other versions. But no, Sony's taken the ambitious step of including the <em>ModNation Racers</em> editor in the mix, allowing you to make use of all of the PS Vita's various bells and whistles while building up tracks.<br />
<br />
And for the most part, it works, both as an actual track editor, and as a showcase for interacting with the Vita's touchscreens. There are a few hiccups (pressing on the rear touchscreen to make mountains is <em>weird</em>), but it all works out quite well.<br />

Among the litany of PlayStation franchises you'll get to experience on the PlayStation Vita is the kart racer <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/modnation-racers"><em>ModNation Racers</em></a>. The Vita version includes touchscreen creation controls -- and a ton of user-generated content! Like <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/02/modnation-racers-reaches-2-million-user-created-items-more-dlc/">2 million+ items</a>.<br />
<br />
Because all the content created by users for the PS3 version of the game will be available for the Vita version on day one.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/06/modnation-racers-modded-into-vita-game/">ModNation Racers modded into Vita game</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 06 Jun 2011 21:41:00 EST. We may not know much about Sony's <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/ngp">NGP</a> (or is it <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/playstation-vita">PlayStation Vita</a>?) just yet, but we do have a whole mess of new images from its game lineup. After the break, you'll find eight (<em>eight!</em>) galleries of brand new screens, pulled from <em>Uncharted</em>, <em>Wipeout</em>, <em>Little Deviants</em>, and many more.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/02/feast-your-eyes-on-a-menagerie-of-new-ngp-game-images/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Feast your eyes on a menagerie of new NGP game images</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/02/feast-your-eyes-on-a-menagerie-of-new-ngp-game-images/">Feast your eyes on a menagerie of new NGP game images</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 02 Jun 2011 12:33:00 EST. The race to two million user creations in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/modnation-racers"><em>ModNation Racers</em></a> took considerably longer to finish than the first-miilion milestone (which was <a href="http://blog.us.playstation.com/2010/08/16/modnation-monday-over-1-million-creations/">achieved</a> in less than three months). Just over nine month's since <em>Modnation's</em> release, the collective community has finally passed the two-million mark in creations -- a <em>wealth</em> of content for players, old and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/25/uncharted-2-goty-god-of-war-3-ps3-greatest-hits/">new</a> alike, to share.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://blog.us.playstation.com/2011/02/28/modnation-a-greatest-hit-with-over-2-million-creations/">PlayStation Blog</a> also confirms that more "official" DLC is on the way, with new karts, characters and prop packs planned. A free "Parts Pack" is already available on the PlayStation Store, and upcoming track packs (used to create new tracks) will include western and pirate themes. Additionally, (official) developer United Front Games is working on new career DLC.<br />

Sony has promoted four of <em>its</em> favorites to PS3 "Greatest Hits," dropping the price of each to $30. The most significant addition to Sony's <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Sony_Greatest_Hits_games#PlayStation_3">growing lineup</a> of discounted bestsellers of yesteryear is the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/28/uncharted-2-game-of-the-year-edition-swings-into-action-october/">"Game of the Year" Edition</a> of <em>Uncharted 2: Among Thieves</em>, which includes a plethora of extra content not included in the original release.<br />
<br />
<em>God of War 3, Heavy Rain</em> and <em>ModNation Racers</em> were the three other first-party titles to be made Hits. Additionally, THQ's <em>UFC Undisputed 2010</em> was recognized as one of last year's best, representing the first third-party game to become part of the PS3's 2010 hall of fame class.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/25/uncharted-2-goty-god-of-war-3-ps3-greatest-hits/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Uncharted 2 GOTY, God of War 3 and others become latest PS3 'Greatest Hits' for $30</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/25/uncharted-2-goty-god-of-war-3-ps3-greatest-hits/">Uncharted 2 GOTY, God of War 3 and others become latest PS3 'Greatest Hits' for $30</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 25 Feb 2011 14:00:00 EST. The latest of what we like to call "lazy gamer" cheats -- downloadable unlocks that open up entire games, for a price -- is actually <a href="http://blog.us.playstation.com/2011/01/17/modnation-monday-hes-super-thanks-for-asking/">inbound from Sony</a> for <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/modnation-racers">ModNation Racers</a></em>. It's called the "Career Unlock All Key" and, for $3 tomorrow on the PlayStation Store, evidently does what its name suggests. <br />
<br />
Given the ultra-creative nature of the game, we can't really knock the idea of having access to all of the stickers, karts, tracks, themes and other various parts on the disc (and those added by DLC, if you've already bought it). Then again, if you've already sunk $60 into the retail release and more into DLC, you'd think the least Sony could do is throw in <strike>some seat covers</strike> a <em>code</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/17/modnation-racers-for-pay-cheat-unlocks-everything-coming-tuesda/">ModNation Racers for-pay cheat unlocks everything, coming tomorrow</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 17 Jan 2011 23:30:00 EST. We like our <em>ModNation</em> tracks short and sweet, but we're sure you'll have your own ideas for next week's "Stunt Pack" DLC -- free for two weeks. The pack's complete contents, including all the parts we didn't use, are posted after the break.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/21/modnation-racers-stunt-pack-free-for-2-weeks-beginning-oct-26/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>ModNation Racers 'Stunt Pack' free for 2 weeks beginning Oct. 26</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/21/modnation-racers-stunt-pack-free-for-2-weeks-beginning-oct-26/">ModNation Racers 'Stunt Pack' free for 2 weeks beginning Oct. 26</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 21 Oct 2010 19:30:00 EST. First the new <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/28/cod-modern-warfare-ratchet-and-clank-a-crack-in-time-and-more/">Greatest Hits</a>, then the <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/28/uncharted-2-game-of-the-year-edition-swings-into-action-october/">Uncharted 2 </a></em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/28/uncharted-2-game-of-the-year-edition-swings-into-action-october/">Game of the Year Edition</a>, and now United Front's cheerful DIY kart game <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/modnation-racers">ModNation Racers</a></em>. The publisher has announced a price drop for both the PS3 and PSP versions of Racers, to $40 and $20 respectively.<br />
<br />
And if <em>that's</em> not exciting enough, Sony is also releasing a set of <em>ModNation</em> PSN avatars today! Wait, the price drop thing was much more exciting. We really should have led with that if we wanted to build <em>up</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/28/modnation-racers-now-40-on-ps3-20-on-psp/">ModNation Racers now $40 on PS3, $20 on PSP</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 28 Sep 2010 17:40:00 EST. Through August 21, Sony's retail site is offering one of six first-party games for free with the purchase of a 120GB PS3 Slim. You can choose from <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/uncharted-2-among-thieves"><em>Uncharted 2</em></a><em>, </em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/motorstorm-pacific-rift"><em>MotorStorm: Pacific Rift</em></a><em>, </em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/mag"><em>MAG</em></a><em>, </em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/heavy-rain"><em>Heavy Rain</em></a>, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/modnation-racers">ModNation Racers</a></em> or <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/white-knight-chronicles"><em>White Knight Chronicles</em></a>.<br />
<br />
Why the wait? The PS3 is currently on backorder at Sony Style, though the offer still seems to be good. So you can order now and actually receive your system later. Think of it as setting your future self up with a wonderful surprise.<br />

As noted in our <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/05/06/review-modnation-racers/">review</a>, <em>ModNation Racers'</em> load times were unbearably long upon release. When Sony promised that today's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/03/modnation-racers-receives-title-update-1-02-tomorrow/">1.02 patch </a>would improve this issue, we busted out the stopwatches to find out for ourselves. Does the patch significantly improve the load times for races?<br />
<br />
The answer appears to be a definitive "yes." We used the first five tracks in the Quick Race mode and calculated the average load time to begin a race before and after the patch was installed. Based on our calculations, it took an average of 45.6 seconds to load a single race before implementing the 1.02 patch. Additionally, returning to the Mod Spot after the race took an average of 24.3 seconds of loading.<br />
<br />
With 1.02 installed, however, the load time to begin a race decreased drastically. Starting a race took an average of 32.7 seconds, which is about 28 percent faster than the pre-patch time! The loading time it took to return to the Mod Spot after a race also improved with the patch, but not significantly: It still took an average of 22.4 seconds.<br />
<br />
Even after the patch, we're still looking at nearly a full minute of combined load times for each race. Still, the improved speediness of launching a race must come as good news for fans of the game.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/04/modnation-racers-1-02-patch-improves-load-times-by-nearly-30/">ModNation Racers 1.02 patch improves load times by nearly 30%</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 04 Aug 2010 17:20:00 EST. Tomorrow, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/modnation-racers"><em>ModNation Racers</em></a>, uh, <em>racers</em> can download Title Update 1.02, which addresses long load times, squashes some bugs, improves server stability and adds <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/07/13/modnation-racers-career-mode-getting-casual-difficulty/">a new "casual" difficulty level</a>. The update will go live at 2:00 a.m. PDT and also brings with it a bunch of changes to <a href="http://community.modnation.com/en-us">the community site</a> including race logs, tracking systems for monitoring your favorite creators (and their favorite creators), plus friend and rep search utilities, according to the <a href="http://blog.us.playstation.com/2010/08/02/modnation-monday-title-update-1-02-releases-august-4th-brings-improvements/">PlayStation Blog</a>. <br />
<br />
Speed demons looking to expand their roster of racers can also download Nukular and Kart this week, a <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/playstationblog/4853262907/">new ride and driver</a> who look like they just leapt out of <em>Mad Max</em> or something. All we can say is <em>we'd</em> definitely steer clear of the guy on the track with the <em>huge plow</em> on the front of his ride. Have you been the recipient of more than a fair share of victory-denying rocket bombardments while playing through the career mode in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/modnation-racers"><em>ModNation Racers</em></a>? The odds are about to tilt back in your favor -- in a recent post on <a href="http://blog.us.playstation.com/2010/07/12/modnation-monday-community-picks-and-patch-update/">PlayStation.Blog</a>, SCEA San Diego community manager Ramone Russell announced that United Front Games is currently putting the finishing touches on a Casual difficulty mode for the game's single-player campaign.<br />
<br />
The post doesn't specify as to when we can expect the new difficulty. It also doesn't specify whether switching to Casual mode automatically generates and broadcasts a message to your PSN friends, informing them of what a <em>tremendous sissy</em> you are.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/07/13/modnation-racers-career-mode-getting-casual-difficulty/">ModNation Racers career mode getting 'Casual' difficulty</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 13 Jul 2010 13:00:00 EST. Despite three high-profile launches in May, the racing genre got lapped that month, according to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/07/01/may-npd-red-dead-rustles-up-top-spots-super-mario-galaxy-2-tak/#continued">NPD sales data</a>. Sony's PS3-exclusive <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/modnation-racers/">ModNation Racers</a>,</em> Activision's Bizarre-developed <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/blur/"><em>Blur</em></a> and Disney's excellent <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/splitsecond/"><em>Split/Second</em></a> all fared poorly on the retail circuit with <em>ModNation</em> squeezing its way into the top 15 (on just one platform, mind you), while the other two multiplatform titles didn't crack the top 30.<br />
<br />
Analyst Michael Pachter told <a href="http://pc.ign.com/articles/110/1103489p1.html">IGN</a> that he "thought the <em>ModNation</em> number was respectable, since the game came out only on May 25." <em>Blur</em> came out on the same day, so, relatively, its sales were disappointing.<br />
<br />
While sales figures weren't provided for any of the above games, Pachter writes in his monthly NPD analysis that <em>Blur</em> "sold well below our estimate of 100,000 units," giving us some insight into how both it and <em>Split/Second</em> performed. However, <em>Split/Second</em> was released a week earlier than <em>ModNation</em> and <em>Blur</em>. <br />
<br />
With two much higher-profile racing games coming out this fall, in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/gran-turismo-5/"><em>Gran Turismo 5</em></a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/need-for-speed-hot-pursuit/"><em>Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit</em></a>, it remains to be seen if the racing genre itself is toxic at the checkout counter or if gamers have simply passed over May's <em>hybrid</em> concepts, content to wait for the new models of their favorite makes.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/07/02/modnation-racers-top-15-finish-sets-slow-pace-for-may-racing/">ModNation Racers' top 15 finish sets slow pace for May racing game sales</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 02 Jul 2010 14:30:00 EST. Give gamers creation tools, and they'll immediately recreate icons from other famous franchises. Like <em>LittleBigPlanet</em> before it, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/modnation-racers"><em>ModNation Racers</em></a>' extensive character and car editor has been used to pay homage to a number of high-profile games and films -- and these creations are the most beloved by the <a href="http://community.modnation.com/"><em>MNR</em> community</a>.<br />
<br />
In addition to Peto-Mad's Mario (above), the top downloaded creations include Iron Man, Spider-Man, and a Transformer to boot. The accuracy of these creations have us wondering: will Sony take these user-submitted Mods down before another company threatens a lawsuit?<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/06/09/licensed-characters-dominate-modnation-racers-top-creations/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Copyrighted characters dominate ModNation Racers' top creations</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/06/09/licensed-characters-dominate-modnation-racers-top-creations/">Copyrighted characters dominate ModNation Racers' top creations</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 09 Jun 2010 13:15:00 EST. In addition, a call by MaxConsole to Entertainment Tech's Toronto office reportedly was met by a "Welcome to Virgin Gaming" greeting.<br />
<br />
Even more conclusive is this <a href="http://virgingaming.com/modnation/details">page</a> on the Virgin site for a <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/modnation-racers">ModNation Racers</a></em> "Online Tournament" for Canadian gamers, held in coordination with GameStop and EBGames' Canadian branches. When contacted by Joystiq, Virgin declined to comment on its business as it relates to game tournaments -- so we'll continue holding out hope that tournaments will be merely a side project, and the real business of Virgin Gaming will be to publish a <em>Color a Dinosaur</em> sequel.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/06/01/virgin-gaming-to-offer-online-game-tournaments/">Virgin Gaming to offer online game tournaments</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 01 Jun 2010 18:30:00 EST. <em>Pinball Heroes</em> may be an odd way of cashing in on Sony's most successful franchises, but it works. The original release debuted on the PSP (via PlayStation Network) last year, and featured four tables based on <em>Uncharted</em>, <em>PAIN</em>, <em>Hot Shots Golf</em> and <em>High Velocity Bowling</em>. A new expansion pack, available next week on the PlayStation Store, will add four more tables to the mix: <em>Fat Princess</em>, <em>Wipeout HD Fury</em>, <em>ModNation Racers</em> and <em>MotorStorm</em>.<br />
<br />
All four tables will be bundled together for $9.99, and can be played with or without the original game. PSP Go owners have even more reason to check out <em>Pinball Heroes</em> -- it's one of the few games that can actually be played in closed system mode!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/05/21/pinball-heroes-adds-fat-princess-wipeout-modnation-and-motorst/">Pinball Heroes adds Fat Princess, Wipeout, ModNation and Motorstorm tables</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 21 May 2010 19:30:00 EST. Happy <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/modnation-racers"><em>ModNation Racers</em></a> day, everyone! A <em>healthy</em> portion of the European PSN update this week focuses on United Front's customizable racer on both its big and tiny platforms. There's also the launch of downloadable versions of <em>Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands</em> and <em>Armoured Core 3 Portable</em> on the PSP, the addition of the "Darkspawn Chronicles" DLC for <em>Dragon Age: Origins</em> and Aerosmith's "Love in an Elevator" <em>finally</em> gets added to <em>Guitar Hero 5</em>. We can sleep well tonight with that knowledge in our brains.<br />

<a href="http://blog.us.playstation.com/2010/05/17/modnation-racers-artist-spotlight-kevin-butler-nuff-said/">The latest video</a> from Sony's fictional Vice President of <em>a whole bunch of things</em> has everything you could ever ask for: Tons of Kevin Butler <em>bon mots</em>, some clips of gameplay footage from <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/modnation-racers"><em>ModNation Racers</em></a>, and an appearance by real-life Sony president and CEO Jack Tretton. Unless, of course -- what if Tretton's actually just a highly paid actor as well? Come to think of it, we've never seen him in any context except for ... <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/15/engadget-and-joystiq-live-from-sonys-e3-2008-keynote/">on the stage</a>! <br />
<br />
Check out the video above to see the line between fantasy and reality get blurred before your very eyes. Also, the video contains a sneak peek at Kevin Butler's custom Mod and race track -- both of which will be available to download when <em>ModNation Racers</em> launches next week.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/05/17/kevin-butler-hypes-modnation-racers-gets-schooled-by-tretton/">Kevin Butler hypes ModNation Racers, gets schooled by Tretton</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 17 May 2010 12:08:00 EST. If you have any interest in Sony's upcoming <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/modnation-racers"><em>ModNation Racers</em></a>, you've probably already read our <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/05/06/review-modnation-racers/">review</a> (and entered our <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/05/14/joyswag-modnation-racers-and-a-psp/">giveaway</a>). You're familiar, then, with our biggest grief with the early review code: obnoxiously long load times. Apparently we weren't the only ones to notice. According to Chuck Lacson, associate marketing manager at SCEA, developer United Front Games is "looking into further optimizing the game via a post-launch patch."<br />
<br />
That should be good news for those already sold on Sony's "Race, Create, Share" motto. The rest of us, though? We'll be able to download a playable demo in the next <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/psn-tuesday">PSN Tuesday</a> update, May 18. The demo will include one track, playable in both single player and split-screen modes. It will also offer creation tools -- and, best of all, any tracks you create and share in the demo will be available in the full version of the game.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/05/15/post-launch-modnation-racers-patch-will-improve-load-times/">Post-launch ModNation Racers patch will improve load times</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 15 May 2010 17:00:00 EST. Alright, stick with us, here: Last month, Sony collaborated with graphic artist Jeremiah Garcia to create a <em>ModNation Racers</em>-branded golf cart. It was supposed to be designed to look like it was created by the indie rock troupe Passion Pit (of <a href="http://us.playstation.com/psn/events/keystoyourkartsweeps.html"><em>LittleBigPlanet 2</em> trailer fame</a>) -- <em>whatever that means</em>. The cart, which runs on solar power, was then displayed at the Coachella Festival to help promote the green energy movement in collaboration with the non-profit group Global Inheritance. But<em> never mind all of that!</em><br />
<br />
What you <em>do</em> need know to is that you can win this golf cart by entering the "Get the Keys to Your ModNation Kart" sweepstakes over on the <a href="http://us.playstation.com/psn/events/keystoyourkartsweeps.html">PlayStation Blog</a>. You can try to get a better understanding of the vehicle's origins by watching the video after the jump, but c'mon, what more do you need to read then "hey, <em>free golf cart</em>."<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/05/13/take-home-the-modnation-racers-golf-cart/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Take home the real-life, solar-powered ModNation Racers golf cart</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/05/13/take-home-the-modnation-racers-golf-cart/">Take home the real-life, solar-powered ModNation Racers golf cart</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 13 May 2010 13:46:00 EST. If so, you know that the game's Career mode was a big hit with us. Unlike most other kart racing games, United Front Games has crafted an actual story (with cinematics and voice acting!) to flesh out the <em>Pleasantville</em>-esque world of <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/modnation-racers"><em>ModNation Racers</em></a></em>. This trailer from <a href="http://blog.us.playstation.com/2010/05/07/modnation-racers-your-racing-career-begins-now-2/">PlayStation Blog</a> highlights some of the more memorable events from the game's Career mode.<br />

Don't forget -- the PSP version has the same story and cinematics as the PS3 version, and it also features the same multi-tiered objective system!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/05/10/modnation-racers-trailer-showcases-career-mode/">ModNation Racers trailer showcases Career mode</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 10 May 2010 15:45:00 EST. What's that? DLC for a game that's not even out yet? Yes, that's how they operate over at Sony -- but don't worry. This isn't an unabashed attempt to nickel and dime you. Rather, <a href="http://blog.us.playstation.com/2010/05/06/modnation-racers-its-a-dlc-air-raid/">PlayStation.Blog will be distributing vouchers</a> through various outlets which will grant <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/modnation-racers"><em>ModNation Racers</em></a> players access to a new character, kart, and all his accessories therein. The racer in question is "Air Raid," pictured above in a sleek, vintage, non-flying biplane.<br />
<br />
Keep an eye on PlayStation.Blog to find out where the codes are being sent to. We'll try our darndest to get our hands on a few vouchers for you guys. Because, you know, <em>we love you</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/05/07/modnation-racers-kind-of-takes-to-the-skies-with-air-raid-dl/">ModNation Racers (kind of) takes to the skies with 'Air Raid' DLC</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 07 May 2010 13:55:00 EST. Hardcore gamers tend to avoid kart racing games without <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/mario-kart"><em>Mario</em></a> in the title -- and for good reason, too. Ever since the success of Nintendo's original SNES effort, the genre has been flooded with mediocre copycat shovelware, starring mascots of rather questionable origin. (Seriously, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/17/todays-most-hilariously-atrocious-video-mandms-kart-racing/"><em>M&amp;M's Kart Racing</em></a> is a real game.) While it may be easy to write off <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/modnation-racers"><em>ModNation Racers</em></a> as just another kart racing game, I was surprised by how well-crafted and deep United Front Games' debut title is. While it has garnered a lot of attention due to its "play, create, share" gimmick, <em>ModNation Racers</em> stands out as a deep, satisfying racer through its gameplay alone.<br />
<br />
For better and for worse, <em>ModNation Racers</em> is cut from a far more hardcore cloth than the typically "family friendly" fare in the genre. <em>ModNation</em> demands skill, and no amount of luck will be able to compensate for sheer ability. The weapons are more balanced than in other games: almost no single weapon is as devastating as <em>Mario Kart</em>'s blue shell and lightning bolt. The ability to enhance weapons by saving them adds an appreciable level of depth: do you use your weapon immediately, or save up for a better one? And the shield introduces yet another strategic element to the gameplay. These small additions to the gameplay add up to make a far more challenging (and satisfying) racer.<br />

If you're anxious to play <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/modnation-racers">ModNation Racers</a></em> on the go but find the prospect of karting a PlayStation 3 around less than enticing, the PSP version might be a suitable alternative. You'll be able to deduce that for yourself if you download the demo, due to arrive on the PSP's online store on Tuesday, May 11th.<br />
<br />
SCEA San Diego producer Vernon Mollette gave <a href="http://blog.us.playstation.com/2010/05/06/modnation-racers-psp-demo-out-may-11th/">PlayStation Blog</a> readers a good idea of what to expect in the racing sampler. You'll find eight different characters 'n' karts, along with a few tracks and access to an Alpine theme in the Track Studio, which is where creative types can piece together their own tracks. It'll be trimmed compared to the final release (coming May 25th), but Mollette believes "you'll get the idea." If there's anybody you can trust to be honest about what's been cut, it's a Mollette.<br type="_moz" /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/05/06/modnation-racers-psp-demo-due-on-may-11/">ModNation Racers PSP demo due on May 11</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 06 May 2010 15:45:00 EST. SCEE loves bundles, so it comes as no surprise that Sony is preparing special <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/modnation-racers"><em>ModNation Racers</em></a> packages for both the PS3 and PSP in Europe. The PS3 package, spotted by <a href="http://www.thesixthaxis.com/2010/05/02/modnation-gets-ps3-psp-bundles/">TheSixthAxis</a>, is rather no-frills, simply bundling the game and a 250GB Slim system for &euro;315. The PSP package is slightly more interesting, including a PSP-3000, a copy of the game on UMD and a <em>ModNation</em>-branded case for &euro;150.<br />
<br />
Neither of these offerings have been announced (or are expected to be announced) for America. Expect a review of <em>ModNation Racers</em> tomorrow.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/05/04/modnation-racers-hardware-bundles-speeding-to-europe/">ModNation Racers hardware bundles speeding to Europe</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 04 May 2010 16:15:00 EST. It seems United Front Games is taking more than just inspiration from Media Molecule for their upcoming "Play, Create, Share" racer. In fact, it seems to have actually kidnapped the star of <em>LittleBigPlanet</em> and made him bonus DLC for the PS3 version of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/modnation-racers"><em>ModNation Racers</em></a>.<br />
<br />
According to the <a href="http://blog.us.playstation.com/2010/04/27/modnation-racers-mystery-mods-revealed/">PlayStation.Blog</a>, early copies of the game (marked with a special sticker) will include a code that unlocks Sackboy as a playable racer. Both pre-ordered copies and first-run copies purchased at retail will feature the bonus.<br />
<br />
Sony seems very eager to encourage pre-orders for the upcoming racer, as Sackboy is just the latest addition to an extensive <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/03/15/modnation-racers-coming-to-psp-and-ps3-on-may-25/">pre-order bonus campaign</a>. Has the tactic worked, or are you still on the fence? Check out a new trailer (featuring Sackboy!) after the break.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/04/27/sackboy-joins-the-modnation-racers/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Sackboy joins the ModNation Racers</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/04/27/sackboy-joins-the-modnation-racers/">Sackboy joins the ModNation Racers</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 27 Apr 2010 17:45:00 EST. Sorry if we got your hopes up, but we couldn't help but highlight Sucker Punch's recent addition to the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/modnation-racers"><em>ModNation Racers</em></a> universe. Using the character creator, the team was able to whip up a <em>Mod</em> recreation of its PS2 mascot, <em>Sly Cooper</em>. While he may not be <em>thieving</em> on PS3 quite yet, we're glad to see Sucker Punch hasn't completely forgotten about the anthropomorphic, rascally raccoon.<br />
<br />
Of course, Sucker Punch couldn't forget to also pay homage to its PS3 hit, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/infamous"><em>inFamous</em></a>. A new "Artist's Spotlight" video for <em>ModNation</em> features a <em>Mod</em> version of Cole MacGrath and his lightning-themed kart. However, more impressive is Sucker Punch's track creation inspired by Empire City, complete with blast crater. With play-testing and careful attention to detail, this addition could undoubtedly be one of the most polished tracks you'll be able to play in the <em>ModNation</em> online community.<br />

Guess who's been playing <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/modnation-racers"><em>ModNation Racers</em></a> before its release? Yes, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/bloggers/andrew-yoon">video game bloggers</a>. But what about some more <em>interesting</em> people? The cast of NBC's sitcom <a href="http://www.hulu.com/community">Community</a> have been getting their hands on Sony's upcoming PS3 (and PSP) racer. Three members of Greendale Community College (including Chevy Chase!) can be seen playing three-player split-screen in the brief clip available on <a href="http://www.hulu.com/watch/143515/community-contemporary-american-poultry">Hulu</a> (embedded after the break, available only for US readers).<br />
<br />
So, how did the cast of this TV series score an early copy of the game? The product placement comes courtesy of the show's producers: Sony Pictures Television.<br />

<a href="http://www.gohastings.com/product/GAME/ModNation-Racers/sku/279079954.uts#cat-product-detail-tabs-wrap">Online retailer Hastings is offering</a> a pretty clever offer for United Front's upcoming kart racer, allowing folks who pre-order <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/modnation-racers"><em>ModNation Racers</em></a> to customize the game's price as they might customize its roster of characters, cars and tracks. However, this customization option is fairly limited -- your only choice is really just $39.99, which is a full $20 off the game's usual price. We know you've come to expect a broader scope when it comes to <em>ModNation</em>'s customizationability, but it's hard to feel miffed with an extra Jackson in your wallet.<br />

A new video on the <a href="http://blog.us.playstation.com/2010/04/16/modnation-racers-psp-final-polish-and-detailing-in-track-studio/">PlayStation.Blog</a> (posted after the break) showcases how easy it is to use the track editor featured in the PSP version of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/modnation-racers"><em>ModNation Racers</em></a>. In fact, it works nearly the same way as the PS3 version. Yes, there are a few caveats (for example, the auto-complete feature is much more intelligent on the console). However, the track editor gives you all the bells, whistles and launch pads you'll need to create a fun race for portable players.<br />
<br />
But of course, you <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/03/17/modnation-racers-psp-preview/">already knew that</a>, right?<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/04/16/modnation-racers-psp-track-editor-works-as-it-should/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>ModNation Racers PSP track editor works as it should</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/04/16/modnation-racers-psp-track-editor-works-as-it-should/">ModNation Racers PSP track editor works as it should</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 16 Apr 2010 23:30:00 EST. Sorry to disappoint you, <em>Ratchet &amp; Clank</em> <a href="http://www.fanfiction.net/game/Ratchet_and_Clank/14/0/1/1/0/0/0/0/0/1/">yaoi fans</a> (warning: link NSFW). But what if Insomniac's famed duo had girlfriends? Insomniac CEO Ted Price brings that concept to life through the character creator featured in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/modnation-racers"><em>ModNation Racers</em></a>. To showcase the creator's versatility, Price created female companions for Ratchet and Clank (like the bikini-clad lombax pictured above).<br />
<br />
"I think over the next few years, we'll see more and more examples of really great player tools appearing in games," Price says in the video demonstration (embedded after the break). "I certainly hope that happens. I know that we're inspired by what [United Front Games has] done."<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/04/13/ratchet-and-clank-girlfriends-in-modnation-racers/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Insomniac CEO creates Ratchet &amp; Clank girlfriends in ModNation Racers</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/04/13/ratchet-and-clank-girlfriends-in-modnation-racers/">Insomniac CEO creates Ratchet &amp; Clank girlfriends in ModNation Racers</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 13 Apr 2010 17:44:00 EST. Don't you hate it when you're in first place in <em>Mario Kart</em> and then ... BAM! A blue shell makes you lose the race in the final lap? Thankfully, United Front Games is promising better-balanced weapons in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/modnation-racers"><em>ModNation Racers</em></a>. "No matter how powerful a weapon is, there is still a chance to evade it," the developer explained in a recent post on the <a href="http://blog.us.playstation.com/2010/03/26/modnation-racers-ps3-bringing-the-boom-with-weapons/">PlayStation.Blog</a>. Hopefully, the "chance" won't be as rare as <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b9jIGPwLY2M">this trick</a> from <em>Mario Kart Wii</em>.<br />
<br />
The game isn't meant to appeal exclusively to the hardcore, though. "We also wanted to ensure a tight race, so the power of each stun is scaled based on your position in the race and distance from the player attacking. What that does is allow anyone in the pack to always have a chance," Nick Letzia explained. It certainly is an interesting design choice -- we wonder if it'll work as well as the developers expect when it comes out <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/03/15/modnation-racers-coming-to-psp-and-ps3-on-may-25/">in May</a>? The PSP has become home to a growing number of PS3 ports, from <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/super-stardust-portable"><em>Super Stardust</em></a> to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/littlebigplanet-psp"><em>LittleBigPlanet</em></a>, but rarely has a portable rendition of a PS3 game remained so faithful to the original as <em>ModNation Racers</em> on PSP. (Well, perhaps with the exception of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/pixeljunk-monsters-deluxe"><em>PixelJunk Monsters</em></a>.) <em>ModNation Racers</em> is launching simultaneously on PSP and PS3, and unlike many previous cross-platform titles, this racer loses almost nothing in its portable conversion.<br />
<br />
The career mode is nearly identical on both platforms, even featuring the same CG animated cutscenes in both. The much-touted creation tools also make an appearance on the PSP, allowing you to create and share levels rather easily. And most importantly, unlike <em>LittleBigPlanet</em>, <em>ModNation Racers</em> retains multiplayer options, offering both Ad-Hoc and Infrastructure connections.<br />
<br />
Even the control schemes between the two platforms feel nearly identical. The PSP version also uses the R-button for acceleration, just like its big console counterpart. It makes sense, but for some reason, I expected the handheld to use the X-button for gas, and <em>Mario Kart</em> players may need some time to adjust; especially considering <em>ModNation</em>'s very different drift mechanic.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/03/17/modnation-racers-psp-preview/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Hands-on: ModNation Racers PSP</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/03/17/modnation-racers-psp-preview/">Hands-on: ModNation Racers PSP</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 17 Mar 2010 14:00:00 EST. Sony's next entry in the "Play, Create, Share" lineup is drawing near. <em>ModNation Racers</em> will launch simultaneously on PS3 and PSP on May 25. Both versions of the game will feature a career mode, online multiplayer and a track editor. If you read our <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/03/15/interview-modnation-racers-dan-sochan/">interview</a> with United Front Games' producer Dan Sochan, you'll already know that there's even some connectivity: play both versions of the game to unlock additional content on the PSP.<br />
<br />
In addition, Sony has announced a few pre-order incentives. Various retailers will offer extra characters, including Ratchet and Clank, Nathan Drake, and Kratos. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/modnation-racers"><em>ModNation Racers</em></a> has come a long way since the release of its public beta last year. Since then, Sony San Diego Studios and United Front Games have expanded the franchise quite a bit, adding a number of new creation tools, four-player split-screen support and even a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/modnation-racers-psp">PSP counterpart</a>. We chatted with <em>ModNation Racers</em> producer Dan Sochan about what's new, and what we can expect from the future, including support for the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/playstation-move">PlayStation Move</a> motion controller.<br />
<br />
<strong>Joystiq: What's new about the code we're seeing today at GDC?</strong><br />
Dan Sochan, producer, <em>ModNation Racers</em>: There's the four-player split-screen, two-player online split-screen, and we've also announced and have been showing off more of the single player career. We kept the story of the single player career mode quite light. At its core, it's still a racing game, so we didn't want to complicate it with you saving the world. The story is you're this young racer who goes into this league, the ModNation Racing Championship, and you're basically going from a nobody to take on the ultimate champion. Through the way you have also have a bit of an influence. It has some elements of <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120789/">Pleasantville</a>, where everyone tends to be a little bit more drab with the colors they choose for their characters and karts, and you influence them by being very creative. So all of a sudden everyone wants to have bright, vibrant colors and doing very elaborate decorating of themselves and their karts, and it's narrated through two characters: Biff and Gary, who offer comic relief through the game.<br />
<br />
<strong>How does progression work in the single player campaign? Do you unlock creation tools in that mode, akin to <em>LittleBigPlanet</em>?</strong><br />
Yes, definitely there will be a certain number of unlockables you'll get through the career, but we tried not to make it exclusively through the career. We didn't want to pigeonhole people and force them to play that way. So you'll also get more unlocks by publishing, sharing, downloading, voting, basically being a participant in the community, which is kind of cool.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/modnation-racers/">ModNation Racers</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/modnation-racers/#2469245"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/11/2009-11-20_12-31-08-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/modnation-racers/#2053777"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/06/kartscreenshot_racing_01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/modnation-racers/#2053778"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/06/kartscreenshot_trackstudio03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/modnation-racers/#2053779"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/06/kartscreenshot_racing_04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/modnation-racers/#2469235"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/11/2009-11-20_12-30-42_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/03/15/interview-modnation-racers-dan-sochan/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Interview: ModNation Racers' Dan Sochan</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/03/15/interview-modnation-racers-dan-sochan/">Interview: ModNation Racers' Dan Sochan</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 15 Mar 2010 16:30:00 EST. While what we've seen of the track editor in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/modnation-racers"><em>ModNation Racers</em></a> has been impressive so far. But it's always lacked a certain amount of ... carnage. It looks like that's about to change, as this new trailer from the <a href="http://blog.eu.playstation.com/2010/03/04/modnation-trailer/">PlayStation.Blog</a> introduces some truly wacky props. Creators will be able to place devices like the Wall of Flame, the Turntable of Destruction, and the Devastator. Oh, and did we mention there are giant camels?<br />
<br />
With launchers, ramps and other lethal traps, <em>ModNation Racers</em> just got a lot more interesting. With these new tools on hand, we hope to see someone create a devious track that finally bests <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kAkjdHRCm5M">Rainbow Road</a> from the original <em>Super Mario Kart</em>. Check out the video after the break.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/03/04/modnation-racers-trailer-introduces-devastating-props/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>ModNation Racers trailer introduces devastating props</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/03/04/modnation-racers-trailer-introduces-devastating-props/">ModNation Racers trailer introduces devastating props</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 04 Mar 2010 20:30:00 EST.
