Warner Bros. Interactive's Monolith Productions is crafting the Lord of the Rings/The Hobbit-themed MOBA, and the studio plans on launching the game this fall (ahead of this December's film, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey).

According to the announcement, 10 players will battle in five-on-five matches set against the backdrop of Middle-earth. Various Lord of the Rings bulletpoints will be hit, of course, with characters like Gollum and Sauron available for fighting (as "Guardians" - think League of Legends' "Hero" characters). We'll assuredly get a closer look at the game next week during E3.
Lord of the Rings meets MOBA in XBLA/PSN 'Guardians of Middle-earth' from F.E.A.R. devs originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 30 May 2012 10:00:00 EST. The East End map is described as a grimy and dilapidated section of Gotham, all the better for two gangs of psychos to wage war.

Bounty Hunter is a new team deathmatch-based mode where, upon mowing down an enemy player, you'll see them leave behind a coin - grab enemy coins for points and your teammate's cash to deny the enemy their score. The last part of the update is customizable player character languages, which means you can finally run around as a Spanish wannabe-Batman.
New map, game mode in next free Gotham City Impostors update originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 21 Apr 2012 03:30:00 EST. WB was previously slated to handle the tie-in title with an expected launch this year, making this leap, well, hobbit-sized. We have reached out to WB for comment.

Superannuation pegs WB Seattle as handling the second Hobbit game as well, noting that WB Games Seattle consists of Monolith Productions almost entirely, after WB fired 60 employees from Snowblind Studios, Surreal Software and Monolith itself in November.

We're just in love with the idea of a studio called "Monolith" -- defined as a large thing -- working on The Hobbit.
Rumor: The Hobbit movie tie-in games coming from Monolith originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 02 Apr 2012 14:30:00 EST. Available starting today on Xbox 360, this content update adds a new level called The 25th Floor, a rooftop arena with a lovely view of the Gotham skyline.

In addition to the map, there are also some new outfits and a few new weapons: a semi-automatic pistol and a katana. Finally, a new toxic gas support item is available, which should help you injure and disorient your opponents with stinky, stinky gases.

PS3 and PC players will have to wait for the DLC, though Monolith and WB haven't revealed exactly when this content will come to those platforms.
Gotham City Impostors gets free DLC on Xbox 360 today; PS3 and PC 'soon' originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 24 Feb 2012 16:00:00 EST. According to posts on the Gotham City Impostors forums, some PS3 users are unable to unlock the full version of the game. Even after paying for the title, some find themselves stuck with the trial version.

A forum administrator notes that Warner Bros. is working on the issue with Sony and asks that users experiencing the problem respond to this thread with their PSN ID and the country from which they are playing. In the meantime, if you haven't already purchased Gotham City Impostors, we'd recommend waiting until the issue is resolved.
Gotham City Impostors fails to unlock for some PS3 players originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 09 Feb 2012 17:55:00 EST. The Xbox Live version isn't set to launch until tomorrow, but today more than 100 DLC items are available in the Xbox Marketplace, ranging from 80 to 320 MS Points. All of the items are cosmetic and won't affect gameplay in any way, Monolith tweeted, and all of them will be unlockable in the full game.

We assume it could have been worse -- getting access to optional DLC before a game launches is better than getting access to required, paid-for DLC months after a game launches. So really Gotham City Impostors isn't such a bad guy after all ... oh. We see what you did there, Monolith.
Take a peek at 100 DLC items for Gotham City Impostors on XBLA originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 07 Feb 2012 22:00:00 EST. There's a thing that most licensed games just don't get. The license association, the premise, really, is the bait, but it's the gameplay that's the hook. The game is the thing. For just a few minutes, let's strip away the goofy exterior surrounding Gotham City Impostors. Take away the Batman references, the Joker allusions, the bright colors, the bonkers aesthetic. Dress it all the way down to the only thing that matters: the game.

When you do that, you've got something more surprising than a weird Batman game without Batman, with lots of guns: a candidate for the best downloadable console shooter since Battlefield 1943.

Gallery: Gotham City Impostors (Gamescom 2011)

Continue reading Real shooting with Gotham City Impostors

Real shooting with Gotham City Impostors originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 19 Dec 2011 21:30:00 EST. Guns. There are tons of 'em in Gotham City Impostors, which is recruiting vigilantes for its open beta this month. With Batman wholly occupied in dismantling disastrously conceived punitive institutions, it's up to a gang of loyal imitators to clean up Gotham City proper. Starting the week of January 10 on PC, PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade, you'll be able to assist either The Bats or -- if you can tolerate their edgy substitution of "s" -- The Jokerz in 12-player online battles for the unusually coveted, crime-ridden city.

Gotham City Impostors will undergo an open beta in December, so if you're interested in the game's premise, character customization or odd weaponry, visit the official site and sign up for a WB ID. With a bit of luck you'll get an early tour of what Condé Nast calls "a gloomy, demented place that should have been razed by an orphan."
Gotham City Impostors outed on Jan. 10, open beta starts in Dec. originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 10 Nov 2011 15:00:00 EST. If you don't already know the premise of multiplayer shooter Gotham City Impostors, this animated short sets it up nicely. Average citizens don the cowl of the caped crusader, while others smear on the Joker's make-up. Then they try to kill each other.
Continue reading Gotham City Impostors animated short sets the stage

Gotham City Impostors animated short sets the stage originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 07 Oct 2011 00:30:00 EST. If you were a keen enough detective and/or a nefarious enough villain to opt in to the Gotham City Impostors closed beta early last month, go check your email and prepare to don your choice of cowl or clown wig: Beta invites are on the move! Now, the beta hasn't actually started yet, but the invitation indicates another announcement "in the coming weeks," which could be any time from now until the heat death of the universe.

Those lucky enough to receive an invitation to Monolith's 6-on-6 vigilante shooter are urged to register at the game's official forums. You can still dress up like Batman and fight crime even if you didn't get an invitation, we suppose, but real-world vigilantism never works out the way you think it will.
According to IGN, Monolith's Batman-free Batman title Gotham City Impostors is expected to hit XBLA and PSN next winter for a cool, crisp 1200 Microsoft Points (or $14.99). We've been trying to work out the exchange rate in our heads since this price was first announced: If Batman: Arkham City costs $59.99 and features one very real Batman, does it make sense for Warner Bros. to charge $14.99 for a game which can feature up to twelve fake Batmans? (Batmen?)

While you compute this complex equation, check out the game's latest trailer posted above. Yes, it's all pre-rendered CGI, but it does a great job of giving you a brief introduction to the game's gun-toting counterfeits.
Gotham City Impostors expected Winter 2012, will cost $15 originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 20 Jul 2011 18:00:00 EST. In an effort to appease all of its retail partners while simultaneously inconveniencing fans, Warner Bros. this morning detailed F.E.A.R. 3's pre-order bonuses -- different and exclusive to three separate retailers -- alongside announcing the game's official release date: March 22, 2011. Best Buy and GameStop pre-orders will pack the Shredder and the Hammer weapons, respectively, while Amazon pre-orders get a 12-page Fear-based comic book.

The Shredder is described as "a sidearm specially developed by Armacham Technologies for their elite guard as an effective way to stop experimental super soldiers that have gone rouge," while the Hammer is said to be "Fettel's original sidearm which was lost when he was killed by his brother, Point Man." And though the new trailer after the break doesn't feature either weapon in action, it does feature a creepy, backwards walking humanoid thing just in time for Halloween.
Continue reading F.E.A.R. 3 set to terrorize March 22, pre-order items detailed

F.E.A.R. 3 set to terrorize March 22, pre-order items detailed originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 29 Oct 2010 11:50:00 EST. Interactive Entertainment,

Look, we get what you're trying to do here with this F.E.A.R. 3 trailer, but you aren't getting the desired result. The live-action portions don't make the world more believable -- in fact, they do the complete opposite. It just comes off as hokey and low-budget. Did you really watch this before sending it out? Bush league, guys.

The gameplay portions of the trailer, however, are more our speed. There's slow-mo gunplay, creepy monsters and plenty of that wonderful ragdoll physics we've grown to love. That's the winning formula! Please keep that in mind for next time.

Sincerely,
Alright, folks, story time -- about five days ago, a tipster sent us the three box shots in the gallery below, claiming they were asked to take part in a survey that essentially revealed the existence of a third game in the Monolith-developed F.E.A.R. series. Further, the game's title on the boxes didn't read "F.E.A.R. 3," but rather "F.3.A.R." Fast-forward four days later and one of the box shots turns up on gaming forum neoGAF as an image (sans box) alleged to be from an unnamed Spanish magazine, with the words "próximo número" ("next number" literally, or, in this case, "next issue") cascading down the left side.

Normally we wouldn't tell you about any of this, except for the fact that when we contacted publisher Warner Bros. Interactive for comment, we were told by a representative, "We have no info to share at this time." While that's certainly not solid confirmation, the fact that WB didn't outright falsify the images strikes us as notable to say the least. We'll let you know if the publisher decides to be any more candid, but for now we're leaving this one firmly in the rumor bin.
I've long been a fan of the Resident Evil series, and while the campaign here has problems and should never be played solo, the Mercenaries mode is what kept me coming back. Those action-packed levels spent trying to survive while running low on ammo and health were some of my most chaotic, yet highly enjoyable, experiences of 2009.
Continue reading Best of the Rest: Dave's Picks of 2009

Best of the Rest: Dave's Picks of 2009 originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 01 Jan 2010 17:15:00 EST. If you've been too frightened by the prospect of Alma's return (or too frightened by the prospect of dropping $50+ on her new game), know that this weekend's Steam deal is none other than F.E.A.R. 2 and the recently released Reborn DLC. If you fall into the former grouping, we suggest you draw the shades, turn off your computer for the weekend and even take the phone off the hook just to be safe.

However, if you're in the latter group, now's the time to pounce as Valve has slashed 50% off of the price of each, offering them at a reduced $24.99 and $4.99, respectively. You can't be in both groups though - if you spend the weekend hiding, you'll miss the deal which is available for "this weekend only."
Steam Weekend Deal: F.E.A.R. 2 and Reborn DLC originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 26 Sep 2009 01:15:00 EST. Don't misunderstand, the sample of the single-player add-on looks really good. We know what you're thinking. "Hey, aren't there already Fight Night Round 4 and FEAR 2 demos?" The answer to that question is ... yes. However, these are new Fight Night Round 4 and FEAR 2 demos. The new Fight Night demo adds the ability to punch using the face buttons instead of the right stick, so it might be worth a look for those who were turned off before. It also features a "body spamming fix." We're not sure what that is, but it sounds gross.

The FEAR 2 demo is actually pretty interesting, as it's a demo for the upcoming single-player DLC pack, "Reborn." It's not very common to see demos for an add-on, but it seems like a pretty good idea. If you're hankering to see what "Reborn" has in store, download the demo and give it a try. The DLC itself was originally scheduled to release this month, so it should be available any day now.
Seven months after release, the game is experiencing a rebirth of sorts, through an upcoming single-player expansion and brand new multiplayer update. "Slow-Mo Deathmatch," a staple of the first game, is finally coming to FEAR 2 through a free update that will be available on September 3rd. Free? A price like that is certainly going to make us revisit the game.

In addition to toiling on the various FEAR 2 updates, Monolith has created this hilarious and thematically-inappropriate trailer for the update. Watch as the magic of "SCIENCE" explains the process behind this DLC.
FEAR 2 gets free Slow-Mo Deathmatch DLC on September 3 originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 12 Aug 2009 12:00:00 EST. Monolith Productions -- the developers behind titles such as F.E.A.R., Condemned, and, if you're an older gamer, No One Lives Forever -- are looking for a software engineer for a "triple-A next-generation console title," as a recent job posting on the developer's site points out. Further down into the nitty-gritty of the listing, you'll find a brief description for this new Xbox 360, PS3, and PC title: "Work closely with engineers, designers, and artists on the creation of game systems for a cutting-edge first-person action game on PlayStation 3, XBox 360 and PC."

And, sadly, that's about all of the information on the game the job listing provides. With F.E.A.R. 2 releasing this past February, we'd be hard-pressed to consider a new entry in that series, so we're crossing our fingers for a new No One Lives Forever.
The trailer shows off both new maps -- "Conductor" and "Decoy" -- and plenty of mechanized destruction courtesy of the game's power armor. The DLC will also come with new character skins, possibly making the price -- 540 MS points on XBL or $6.99 on PSN -- a little more palatable. Interactive is thinking small with its first DLC for F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin, due April 16. Small as in the comical scale of the "Toy Soldiers" map pack's levels, and small in price -- it'll be a free download via Xbox Live Marketplace and the PlayStation Store.

The DLC will include three maps: "Full Tilt," which places players inside a pinball machine; "Cockroach," which shrinks them down and sees them scurrying up walls; and "Recess," which is set within a sand castle. WBIE says the pack is the first of three it intends to release this year. Maps dedicated to Elite Power Armor combat will be coming in May, followed by additional single player levels by the end of the summer. No word on whether they'll be free, but we fear they won't be.
Free F.E.A.R. 2 'Toy Soldiers' map pack coming April 16 originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 07 Apr 2009 21:00:00 EST. The accidental release of F.E.A.R. 2 DLC on Xbox Live Marketplace caused some confusion -- especially after it was suddenly pulled hours after release. The "Toy Soldiers" DLC was, according to Monolith Productions, meant to release in April and best of all, was always meant to be free on both the Xbox 360 and PS3.

As you can tell from the screenshots, the "Toy Soldiers" pack places players from a rather unique perspective. Shrunken down to miniature proporations, where players will duke it out in a pinball machine, hospital room, and playground.

Gallery: F.E.A.R. 2 - Toy Soldiers

F.E.A.R. 2 'Toy Soldiers' DLC will be free for all in April originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 13 Mar 2009 15:53:00 EST.

Trivial Pursuit: Hundreds of new questions for movie buffs.

Tomb Raider: Underworld: Designer costume pack, created by designers and voted for by Tomb Raider fans.

F.E.A.R. 2: "Toy Soldiers" Map Pack, where players are inches tall and battle in a "pinball machine, a hospital lab room, and a playground sandbox." OK, that actually sounds cool.

It's official -- when promoting video games, regular-sized advertising structures just don't cut it anymore. LittleBigPlanet's bite-sized billboards were a step in the right direction, though Warner Bros. just took the miniature advertising game to a smaller, mobile and more adorable level. In the future, when rookie industry analysts inquire as to how F.E.A.R. 2 became the best-selling game of all time, their weathered superiors will become lost in a haze of nostalgia, muttering through a slight grin -- "Catvertising."

If you live in foggy Londontown, keep an eye out over the next few days for black cats who are unknowingly promoting F.E.A.R. 2's Friday the 13th release date. Before PETA flips their easily flippable lid, we should mention that the cats aren't being painted, or treated inhumanely. They're just wearing little F.E.A.R. 2-branded kitten coats, which you can order for your own precious lil' guy, provided you live in the London area, and you don't have a morbidly obese house cat.

[Thanks, Ben S.]
F.E.A.R. 2 advertising with billboard-infused cats originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 11 Feb 2009 22:15:00 EST. Alma's back, and she wants to mess you up. We've been waiting long enough, and, finally, F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin has dropped. Before you take Alma on, maybe you should brush up on your knowledge of the game by checking out some of these reviews below. Just a thought ...

IGN AU (86/100): "We just wish Monolith had produced a slightly more progressive or challenging backdrop for the horror that is this game's mojo. It's absolutely worth playing, but that's the difference between a game that scores 9+ and a game that scores 8.6."

Game Informer (84/100): "While the multiplayer is weak and the mood won't make people forget Dead Space any time soon, the solid action core makes it worth a play."

PlayStation: The Official Magazine (80/100): "F.E.A.R. 2 emerges as an effective, entertaining FPS with a chiller story element, rather than a real survival horror shooter...Play with the lights dimmed, and don't be surprised if you end up squealing (on the inside) like a little girl." [Mar 2009, p.67]

Eurogamer (50/100): "If you've never played a first-person shooter before, you'll probably be in love - this is as archetypal a corridor-shooter as has ever been made, and there's a reason why it works. But for anyone who's been running down corridors with shotguns for most of their adult life, this is so uninspired that you worry for the spark of Monolith's soul. You guys made "No One Lives Forever," remember? You're smart. You're better than this."

Warner Bros. and Monolith have dished out a new trailer (it's rated "M," so you'll find it after the break) featuring plenty of gameplay, a fairly in-depth look at the game's story and several instances of that creepy Alma girl popping up at random times.

Give it a watch and if you feel so inclined, hit up the BD link below and download the thing in HD.
Maybe it's just us, but we really feel for Alma and the situation she was put in. We thought we would warn you so you can prepare the extra pair of trousers now. You'll need it, because Alma and the gang are headed back to your Xbox 360 in a new F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin demo that arrives on XBLM next Thursday, January 22. We don't know what the demo will contain, but we're guessing it will involve (virtual) shooting, (virtual) hallucinations and (very, very real) abject terror. What would you expect? It's F.E.A.R. 2. Twice the fear, half the calories.
F.E.A.R. 2 demo to cause soiled pants January 22 originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 16 Jan 2009 17:30:00 EST.
