Because MOBA games come from a heritage of real-time strategy gameplay, they tend to have most of the qualities of that genre. They're complicated, high stakes affairs, with lots of controls and nuances, where one little move can sometimes turn the tide of battle completely. These are traditionally games meant for hotkeys and minimap clicking, mouse precision and a Ventrilo client, rather than the relatively imprecise triggers and joysticks on a console controller.<br /><br />Which makes it all the more impressive, then, that Monolith (a studio with a long shooter tradition that includes <em>No One Lives Forever</em> and the <em>FEAR</em> series) has chosen to take on <em>Guardians of Middle Earth</em>, a MOBA game designed from the ground up to recreate the traditionally PC-centric experience on consoles. Yes, games like <a href="http://joystiq.com/game-awesomenauts"><em>Awesomenauts</em></a> and <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/monday-night-combat"><em>Monday Night Combat</em></a> have borrowed MOBA principles, but Monolith here goes full bore, all the way back to the top-down isometric view that began with the original <em>Starcraft</em> Aeon of Strife map at the genre's inception.<br /><br />In fact, given this task, the fact that Monolith's game also happens to use the Lord of the Rings license (right around the release of the new Hobbit film) is almost inconsequential. Tolkien nerds may want to see Sauron battling it out with Gandalf directly, but MOBA nerds should be even more excited to see what Monolith does with this emerging new form.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/guardians-of-middle-earth-e3-2012/">Guardians of Middle-earth (E3 2012)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/guardians-of-middle-earth-e3-2012/#5071153"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/06/guardians-of-middle-earthe3screenshotdwarvenmight_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/guardians-of-middle-earth-e3-2012/#5071154"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/06/guardians-of-middle-earthe3screenshotinbase_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/guardians-of-middle-earth-e3-2012/#5071155"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/06/guardians-of-middle-earthe3screenshotleadingcharge_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/guardians-of-middle-earth-e3-2012/#5071156"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/06/guardians-of-middle-earthe3screenshotpushingtower_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/guardians-of-middle-earth-e3-2012/#5071158"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/06/guardians-of-middle-earthcharacter-artgandalf_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/12/07/guardians-of-middle-earth-review/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Guardians of Middle-Earth review: MOBA fête</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/12/07/guardians-of-middle-earth-review/">Guardians of Middle-Earth review: MOBA fête</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 07 Dec 2012 10:30:00 EST. Monolith has taken the PC-centric gameplay of the emerging MOBA (or <em>DotA</em>, or <em>LoL</em>, or even action RTS, whatever you like to call it) genre, and translated it over to a console and a controller. But since that first play at E3, I've gotten a few more chances to play the game at Comic-Con and PAX. GOME (acronyms!) is more than just a console clone of the popular <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/league-of-legends"><em>League of Legends</em></a> and the upcoming <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/dota-2"><em>Dota 2</em></a>.<br /><br />Monolith has iterated on this complex strategy/action genre in a few different ways. Here's a list of five different things, whether you're a level 30 summoner or a Venomancer newbie, that you'll find new and interesting about <em>Guardians of Middle-earth</em> when it arrives for consoles later this year.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/09/05/how-guardians-of-middle-earth-innovates-on-the-moba-gametype/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>How Guardians of Middle-earth innovates on the MOBA gametype</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/09/05/how-guardians-of-middle-earth-innovates-on-the-moba-gametype/">How Guardians of Middle-earth innovates on the MOBA gametype</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 05 Sep 2012 12:00:00 EST. Hall brings the idea up on <a href="http://www.the-postmortem.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&amp;t=1889">The Postmortem</a>, a Blood fan forum, gauging interest and asking for wish lists in a potential <em>Blood </em>remake.<br /><br />"To be clear, I am thinking of bringing the ORIGINAL <em>Blood </em>game back as it was, with functionality alterations/enhancements that are similar but superior to ZDAEMON's," Hall writes. "I would also make it work on all platforms, and not just PC."<br /><br />Hall has all of the legal rights and issues "handled" and will get support from anyone with a legal investment in <em>Blood</em>, he says. Hall will be the one footing the bill the new game as well: "One thing to also know is that if I go ahead and attempt to bring <em>Blood </em>back, I will be the one actually paying the bill. It is certainly going to cost money to do this, and I will not likely be getting my money back. It will be all for the fun of it. Just something to know."<br /><br />Hall has reservations about releasing the source code for <em>Blood</em>, writing, "Part of what I'm hoping to achieve with this potential project is a game that really allows people to build measurable value in their cummulative game accomplishments." The conversation is on-going at <a href="http://www.the-postmortem.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&amp;t=1889">The Postmortem</a> if you'd like to share your blood-soaked dream list with Hall himself.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/08/05/jace-hall-is-out-for-blood-asks-fans-what-they-want-in-a-remake/">Jace Hall is out for Blood, asks fans what they want in a remake</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 05 Aug 2012 23:59:00 EST. With <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/guardians-of-middle-earth"><em>Guardians of Middle-earth</em></a>, we don't think we'll be able to do that, though.<br /><br />Perhaps it's because we're invested in the lore of <em>Lord of the Rings</em>, because we've spent years devouring the books, films and Trivial Pursuit board games, and we've rooted for Frodo, Gandalf and the good guys to win the whole time. Choosing to play as Sauron now would feel <em>dirty</em>.<br /><br />That said, the first-ever gameplay trailer for <em>Guardians of Middle-earth</em> makes each side look equally cool, and it promises the game will launch this fall, for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/06/10/guardians-of-middle-earth-brings-moba-to-xbla-and-psn/">XBLA and PSN only</a>. The studio first cut its teeth on first-person shooters, finding a cult hit in the popular <em>No One Lives Forever </em>series. Then, it was a vast experiment with <em>The Matrix Online</em>, before coming back to shooters with the <em>Fear</em> and <em>Condemned</em> series of games. And now, the company's trying to reinvent itself yet again with two licensed downloadable titles for Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment: first <em>Gotham City Imposters</em> from earlier this year, and now <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/guardians-of-middle-earth"><em>Guardians of Middle-earth</em></a>.<br /><br /><span style="font-style: italic;">Guardians of Middle-earth</span> is a weird one. It's a licensed <em>Lord of The Rings</em> title, starring characters from Tolkien's series. It's a MOBA game, similar to <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/league-of-legends"><em>League of Legends</em></a> or <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/dota-2"><em>DOTA 2</em></a>, featuring Tolkien's characters fighting it out across a battlefield full of AI-controlled troops. And it's a complicated, deep online multiplayer title, designed for competitive play.<br /><br />"What's so weird about that?" you ask? It's being developed only for consoles.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/guardians-of-middle-earth-e3-2012/">Guardians of Middle-earth (E3 2012)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/guardians-of-middle-earth-e3-2012/#5071153"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/06/guardians-of-middle-earthe3screenshotdwarvenmight_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/guardians-of-middle-earth-e3-2012/#5071154"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/06/guardians-of-middle-earthe3screenshotinbase_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/guardians-of-middle-earth-e3-2012/#5071155"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/06/guardians-of-middle-earthe3screenshotleadingcharge_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/guardians-of-middle-earth-e3-2012/#5071156"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/06/guardians-of-middle-earthe3screenshotpushingtower_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/guardians-of-middle-earth-e3-2012/#5071158"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/06/guardians-of-middle-earthcharacter-artgandalf_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/06/10/guardians-of-middle-earth-brings-moba-to-xbla-and-psn/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Guardians of Middle-earth brings MOBA to XBLA and PSN</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/06/10/guardians-of-middle-earth-brings-moba-to-xbla-and-psn/">Guardians of Middle-earth brings MOBA to XBLA and PSN</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 10 Jun 2012 21:00:00 EST. Warner Bros. Interactive's Monolith Productions is crafting the Lord of the Rings/The Hobbit-themed MOBA, and the studio plans on launching the game this fall (ahead of this December's film, <em>The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey</em>).<br /><br />According to the announcement, 10 players will battle in five-on-five matches set against the backdrop of Middle-earth. Various Lord of the Rings bulletpoints will be hit, of course, with characters like Gollum and Sauron available for fighting (as "Guardians" - think <em>League of Legends</em>' "Hero" characters). We'll assuredly get a closer look at the game next week during E3.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/05/30/lord-of-the-rings-meets-moba-in-xbla-psn-guardians-of-middle-ea/">Lord of the Rings meets MOBA in XBLA/PSN 'Guardians of Middle-earth' from F.E.A.R. devs</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 30 May 2012 10:00:00 EST. The East End map is described as a grimy and dilapidated section of Gotham, all the better for two gangs of psychos to wage war.<br /><br />Bounty Hunter is a new team deathmatch-based mode where, upon mowing down an enemy player, you'll see them leave behind a coin - grab enemy coins for points and your teammate's cash to deny the enemy their score. WB was <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/19/warner-bros-interactive-entertainment-talks-strategy-new-hobbi/">previously slated</a> to handle the tie-in title with an expected launch this year, making this leap, well, hobbit-sized. We have reached out to WB for comment.<br /><br />Superannuation pegs WB Seattle as handling the second <em>Hobbit </em>game as well, noting that WB Games Seattle consists of Monolith Productions almost entirely, after WB fired 60 employees from Snowblind Studios, Surreal Software and Monolith itself in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/11/04/warner-bros-makes-cuts-across-seattle-studios/">November</a>.<br /><br />We're just in love with the idea of a studio called "Monolith" -- defined as a <em>large </em>thing -- working on The Hobbit.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/04/02/rumor-the-hobbit-movie-tie-in-games-coming-from-monolith/">Rumor: The Hobbit movie tie-in games coming from Monolith</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 02 Apr 2012 14:30:00 EST. There's no word yet on a PS3 DLC launch. Producer Nate Edson and associate producer Lucas Myers explain the new PC content in the above video, wherein they prove they are the best actors in existence, ever.<br /><br />No, really -- keeping with the "impostors" theme, Edson and Myers obviously want to throw us off and are therefore pretending to be terrible actors in a scene that is painful to watch, and they act horribly <em>so well </em>that they're obviously the best in the business.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/03/12/gotham-city-impostors-free-dlc-out-on-pc/">Gotham City Impostors' free DLC out on PC</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 12 Mar 2012 20:00:00 EST. According to posts on the <em>Gotham City Impostors</em> forums, some PS3 users are unable to unlock the full version of the game. Even after paying for the title, some find themselves stuck with the trial version.<br /><br />A forum administrator notes that Warner Bros. is working on the issue with Sony and asks that users experiencing the problem respond to <a href="http://www.gothamcityimpostors.com/forums/showthread.php/4373-Problems-with-PS3-Unlocking-Full-Game/">this thread</a> with their PSN ID and the country from which they are playing. In the meantime, if you haven't already purchased <em>Gotham City Impostors</em>, we'd recommend waiting until the issue is resolved.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/02/09/gotham-city-impostors-fails-to-unlock-for-some-ps3-players/">Gotham City Impostors fails to unlock for some PS3 players</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 09 Feb 2012 17:55:00 EST. The Xbox Live version isn't set to launch until tomorrow, but today more than 100 DLC items are available in the Xbox Marketplace, ranging from 80 to 320 MS Points. All of the items are cosmetic and won't affect gameplay in any way, Monolith <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/GothamImpostors/status/166918807280033792">tweeted</a>, and all of them will be unlockable in the full game.<br /><br />We assume it could have been worse -- getting access to optional DLC before a game launches is better than getting access to required, paid-for DLC months <em>after </em>a game launches. So really <em>Gotham City Impostors </em>isn't such a bad guy after all ... oh. We see what you did there, Monolith.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/02/07/take-a-peek-at-100-dlc-items-for-gotham-city-impostors-on-xbla/">Take a peek at 100 DLC items for Gotham City Impostors on XBLA</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 07 Feb 2012 22:00:00 EST. There's a thing that most licensed games just don't get. The license association, the premise, really, is the bait, but it's the gameplay that's the hook. The game is the thing. For just a few minutes, let's strip away the goofy exterior surrounding <em>Gotham City Impostors</em>. Take away the Batman references, the Joker allusions, the bright colors, the bonkers aesthetic. Dress it all the way down to the only thing that matters: the game.<br />
<br />
When you do that, you've got something more surprising than a weird Batman game without Batman, with lots of guns: a candidate for the best downloadable console shooter since <em>Battlefield 1943</em>.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/gotham-city-impostors-gamescom-2011/">Gotham City Impostors (Gamescom 2011)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/gotham-city-impostors-gamescom-2011/#4373793"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/08/gcibatscar-1313614803_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/gotham-city-impostors-gamescom-2011/#4373794"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/08/gcicrimealley-1313614804_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/gotham-city-impostors-gamescom-2011/#4373795"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/08/gcidocks-1313614805_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/gotham-city-impostors-gamescom-2011/#4373799"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/08/gciinitiation-1313614807_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/gotham-city-impostors-gamescom-2011/#4373800"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/08/gcivatroom-1313614808_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/19/real-shooting-with-gotham-city-impostors/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Real shooting with Gotham City Impostors</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/19/real-shooting-with-gotham-city-impostors/">Real shooting with Gotham City Impostors</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 19 Dec 2011 21:30:00 EST. Guns. There are tons of 'em in <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/gotham-city-impostors">Gotham City Impostors</a></em>, which is recruiting vigilantes for its open beta <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/11/10/gotham-city-impostors-outed-on-jan-10-open-beta-starts-in-dec/">this month</a>. With Batman wholly occupied in dismantling disastrously conceived punitive institutions, it's up to a gang of loyal imitators to clean up Gotham City proper. Starting the week of January 10 on PC, PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade, you'll be able to assist either The Bats or -- if you can tolerate their edgy substitution of "s" -- The Jokerz in 12-player online battles for the unusually coveted, crime-ridden city.<br />

<em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/gotham-city-impostors">Gotham City Impostors</a></em> will undergo an open beta in December, so if you're interested in the game's premise, character customization or odd weaponry, visit the <a href="https://www.gothamcityimpostors.com/beta">official site</a> and sign up for a WB ID. With a bit of luck you'll get an early tour of what Cond&eacute; Nast calls "a gloomy, demented place that should have been razed by an orphan."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/11/10/gotham-city-impostors-outed-on-jan-10-open-beta-starts-in-dec/">Gotham City Impostors outed on Jan. 10, open beta starts in Dec.</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 10 Nov 2011 15:00:00 EST. If you don't already know the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/16/gotham-city-impostors-preview/">premise</a> of multiplayer shooter <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/gotham-city-impostors">Gotham City Impostors</a></em>, this animated short sets it up nicely. Average citizens don the cowl of the caped crusader, while others smear on the Joker's make-up. Then they try to kill each other.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/07/gotham-city-impostors-animated-short-sets-the-stage/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Gotham City Impostors animated short sets the stage</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/07/gotham-city-impostors-animated-short-sets-the-stage/">Gotham City Impostors animated short sets the stage</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 07 Oct 2011 00:30:00 EST. If you were a keen enough detective and/or a nefarious enough villain to opt in to the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/Gotham-City-Impostors"><em>Gotham City Impostors</em></a> closed beta <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/09/sign-up-for-gotham-city-impostors-beta-see-what-its-like-not-t/">early last month</a>, go check your email and prepare to don your choice of cowl or clown wig: Beta invites are on the move! Now, the beta hasn't actually <em>started</em> yet, but the invitation indicates another announcement "in the coming weeks," which could be any time from now until the heat death of the universe.<br />
<br />
Those lucky enough to receive an invitation to Monolith's 6-on-6 vigilante shooter are urged to register at the <a href="http://www.gothamcityimpostors.com/forums/">game's official forums</a>. You can still dress up like Batman and fight crime even if you didn't get an invitation, we suppose, but real-world vigilantism <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/05/12/batman-arrested_n_861023.html#s369720&amp;title=Juan_Aguirre">never works out the way you think it will</a>.<br />

According to <a href="http://xboxlive.ign.com/articles/118/1182866p1.html">IGN</a>, Monolith's Batman-free <em>Batman</em> title <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/gotham-city-impostors"><em>Gotham City Impostors</em></a> is expected to hit XBLA and PSN next winter for a cool, crisp 1200 Microsoft Points (or $14.99). We've been trying to work out the exchange rate in our heads since this price was first announced: If <em>Batman: Arkham City</em> costs $59.99 and features one very real Batman, does it make sense for Warner Bros. to charge $14.99 for a game which can feature up to twelve fake Batmans? (Batmen?)<br />
<br />
While you compute this complex equation, check out the game's latest trailer posted above. Yes, it's all pre-rendered CGI, but it does a great job of giving you a brief introduction to the game's gun-toting counterfeits.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/20/gotham-city-impostors-expected-winter-2012-will-cost-15/">Gotham City Impostors expected Winter 2012, will cost $15</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 20 Jul 2011 18:00:00 EST. In an effort to appease all of its retail partners while simultaneously inconveniencing fans, Warner Bros. this morning detailed <em>F.E.A.R. 3</em><em>'s</em> pre-order bonuses -- different and exclusive to three separate retailers -- alongside announcing the game's official release date: March 22, 2011. Best Buy and GameStop pre-orders will pack the Shredder and the Hammer weapons, respectively, while Amazon pre-orders get a 12-page <em>Fear</em>-based comic book.<br />
<br />
The Shredder is described as "a sidearm specially developed by Armacham Technologies for their elite guard as an effective way to stop experimental super soldiers that have gone rouge," while the Hammer is said to be "Fettel's original sidearm which was lost when he was killed by his brother, Point Man." And though the new trailer after the break doesn't feature either weapon in action, it <em>does</em> feature a creepy, backwards walking humanoid thing <em>just in time</em> for Halloween.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/29/fear-3-release-date-march-22-2011/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>F.E.A.R. 3 set to terrorize March 22, pre-order items detailed</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/29/fear-3-release-date-march-22-2011/">F.E.A.R. 3 set to terrorize March 22, pre-order items detailed</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 29 Oct 2010 11:50:00 EST. Interactive Entertainment,<br />
<br />
Look, we get what you're trying to do here with this <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/fear-3"><em>F.E.A.R. 3</em></a> trailer, but you aren't getting the desired result. The live-action portions don't make the world more believable -- in fact, they do the complete opposite. It just comes off as hokey and low-budget. Did you really watch this before sending it out? Bush league, guys. <br />
<br />
The gameplay portions of the trailer, however, are more our speed. There's slow-mo gunplay, creepy monsters and plenty of that wonderful ragdoll physics we've grown to love. That's the winning formula! Please keep that in mind for next time.<br />
<br />
Sincerely,<br />

Alright, folks, story time -- about five days ago, a tipster sent us the three box shots in the gallery below, claiming they were asked to take part in a survey that essentially revealed the existence of a third game in the Monolith-developed <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/fear">F.E.A.R.</a></em> series. Further, the game's title on the boxes didn't read "F.E.A.R. 3," but rather "F.3.A.R." Fast-forward four days later and one of the box shots turns up on gaming forum <a href="http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=390998">neoGAF</a> as an image (sans box) alleged to be from an unnamed Spanish magazine, with the words "pr&oacute;ximo n&uacute;mero" ("next number" literally, or, in this case, "next issue") cascading down the left side.<br />
<br />
Normally we wouldn't tell you about any of this, except for the fact that when we contacted publisher Warner Bros. Interactive for comment, we were told by a representative, "We have no info to share at this time." While that's certainly not solid confirmation, the fact that WB didn't outright falsify the images strikes us as notable to say the least. We'll let you know if the publisher decides to be any more candid, but for now we're leaving this one firmly in the rumor bin.<br />

<em>Condemned</em> is available everywhere but Australia, India, Japan and New Zealand. Instead, in Japan -- and Japan only -- <em>Guilty Gear 2: Overture</em> has been added to Games On Demand for &yen;2,940 ($32.75). Additionally, in Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Singapore and Taiwan, <em>Ridge Racer 6</em> is now available -- also for &yen;2,940 in Japan, with prices varying by region.<br />

<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/resident-evil-5"><em><strong>Resident Evil 5</strong></em></a><br />
I've long been a fan of the <em>Resident Evil </em>series, and while the campaign here has problems and should <em>never</em> be played solo, the Mercenaries mode is what kept me coming back. Those action-packed levels spent trying to survive while running low on ammo and health were some of my most chaotic, yet highly enjoyable, experiences of 2009.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/01/01/best-of-the-rest-daves-picks-of-2009/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Best of the Rest: Dave's Picks of 2009</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/01/01/best-of-the-rest-daves-picks-of-2009/">Best of the Rest: Dave's Picks of 2009</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 01 Jan 2010 17:15:00 EST. If you've been too frightened by the prospect of Alma's return (or too frightened by the prospect of dropping $50+ on her new game), know that <a href="http://store.steampowered.com/news/2862/">this weekend's Steam deal</a> is none other than <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/fear-2"><em>F.E.A.R. 2</em></a> and the recently released <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/12/fear-2-gets-free-slow-mo-deathmatch-dlc-on-september-3/"><em>Reborn </em>DLC</a>. If you fall into the former grouping, we suggest you draw the shades, turn off your computer for the weekend and even take the phone off the hook <em>just to be safe</em>.<br />
<br />
However, if you're in the latter group, now's the time to pounce as Valve has slashed 50% off of the price of each, offering them at a reduced $24.99 and $4.99, respectively. You can't be in both groups though - if you spend the weekend hiding, you'll miss the deal which is available for "this weekend only." <p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/26/steam-weekend-deal-f-e-a-r-2-and-reborn-dlc/">Steam Weekend Deal: F.E.A.R. 2 and Reborn DLC</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 26 Sep 2009 01:15:00 EST. We know what you're thinking. "Hey, aren't there <em>already</em> <em>Fight Night Round 4</em> and <em>FEAR 2</em> demos?" The answer to that question is ... yes. However, these are <em>new</em> <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/fight-night-round-4"><em>Fight Night Round 4</em></a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/fear-2"><em>FEAR 2</em></a> demos. The new <em>Fight Night </em>demo adds the ability to punch using the face buttons instead of the right stick, so it might be worth a look for those who were turned off before. It also features a "body spamming fix." We're not sure what that is, but it sounds gross.<br />
<br />
The <em>FEAR 2</em> demo is actually pretty interesting, as it's a demo for the upcoming single-player DLC pack, "Reborn." It's not very common to see demos for an add-on, but it seems like a pretty good idea. If you're hankering to see what "Reborn" has in store, download the demo and give it a try. The DLC itself was originally <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/29/new-f-e-a-r-2-dlc-flips-the-script-in-august/">scheduled to release this month</a>, so it <em>should</em> be available any day now.<br />

Seven months after release, the game is experiencing a rebirth of sorts, through an <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/29/new-f-e-a-r-2-dlc-flips-the-script-in-august/">upcoming single-player expansion</a> and brand new multiplayer update. "Slow-Mo Deathmatch," a staple of the first game, is finally coming to <em>FEAR 2</em> through a free update that will be available on September 3rd. Free? A price like that is certainly going to make us revisit the game.<br />
<br />
In addition to toiling on the various <em>FEAR 2</em> updates, Monolith has created this hilarious and thematically-inappropriate trailer for the update. Watch as the magic of "SCIENCE" explains the process behind this DLC.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/12/fear-2-gets-free-slow-mo-deathmatch-dlc-on-september-3/">FEAR 2 gets free Slow-Mo Deathmatch DLC on September 3</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 12 Aug 2009 12:00:00 EST. Next month, Monolith's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/fear-2"><em>F.E.A.R. 2</em></a> will receive an injection of fresh DLC, <a href="http://xboxlive.ign.com/articles/100/1008718p1.html">IGN</a> reveals. This time around, the content won't be focused on multiplayer. Instead, <em>F.E.A.R. 2: Reborn</em> adds four new single player missions, with the player controlling replica soldier Foxtrot 813 through an all-new adventure.<br /><br />There's no word on exact date or price, but we'll be sure to inform all eight of you that care when we find out.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://news.bigdownload.com/2009/07/29/single-player-f-e-a-r-2-dlc-coming-in-august/">Big Download</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/29/new-f-e-a-r-2-dlc-flips-the-script-in-august/">New F.E.A.R. 2 DLC flips the script in August</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 29 Jul 2009 21:10:00 EST. Monolith Productions -- the developers behind titles such as <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/fear-2">F.E.A.R</a>.,</em> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/condemned-2"><em>Condemned</em></a>, and, if you're an older gamer, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=no+one+lives+forever"><em>No One Lives Forever</em></a> -- are looking for a software engineer for a "<span class="text">triple-A next-generation console title," as <a href="http://www.lith.com/jobs.asp?j=eng7">a recent job posting</a> on the developer's site points out. Further down into the nitty-gritty of the listing, you'll find a brief description for this new Xbox 360, PS3, and PC title: "</span>Work closely with engineers, designers, and artists on the creation of game systems for a cutting-edge first-person action game on PlayStation 3, XBox 360 and PC." <br />
<br />
And, sadly, that's about all of the information on the game the job listing provides. With <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/fear-2"><em>F.E.A.R. 2</em></a> releasing this past February, we'd be hard-pressed to consider a new entry in that series, so we're crossing our fingers for a new <em>No One Lives Forever</em>. <br />

Interactive is thinking small with its first DLC for <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/fear-2">F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin</a>, </em>due April 16. Small as in the comical scale of the "Toy Soldiers" map pack's levels, and small in price -- it'll be a <em>free</em> download via Xbox Live Marketplace and the PlayStation Store.<br /><br />The DLC will include three maps: "Full Tilt," which places players inside a pinball machine; "Cockroach," which shrinks them down and sees them scurrying up walls; and "Recess," which is set within a sand castle. WBIE says the pack is the first of three it intends to release this year. Maps dedicated to Elite Power Armor combat will be coming in May, followed by additional single player levels by the end of the summer. No word on whether they'll be free, but we fear they won't be.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/07/free-f-e-a-r-2-toy-soldiers-map-pack-coming-april-16/">Free F.E.A.R. 2 'Toy Soldiers' map pack coming April 16</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 07 Apr 2009 21:00:00 EST. The <a href="http://xbox.joystiq.com/2009/03/10/free-dlc-for-trivial-pursuit-tomb-raider-and-fear-2/">accidental release</a> of <em>F.E.A.R. 2</em> DLC on Xbox Live Marketplace caused some confusion -- especially after it was suddenly <a href="http://xbox.joystiq.com/2009/03/11/f-e-a-r-2-maps-yanked-from-xblm-back-in-april/">pulled</a> hours after release. The "Toy Soldiers" DLC was, according to Monolith Productions, meant to release in April and best of all, was always meant to be free on both the Xbox 360 and PS3.<br /><br />As you can tell from the screenshots, the "Toy Soldiers" pack places players from a rather unique perspective. Shrunken down to miniature proporations, where players will duke it out in a pinball machine, hospital room, and playground.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/f-e-a-r-2-toy-soldiers/">F.E.A.R. 2 - Toy Soldiers</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/f-e-a-r-2-toy-soldiers/#1430098"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/03/mp_cockroach_final_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/f-e-a-r-2-toy-soldiers/#1430099"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/03/mp_fulltilt_final_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/f-e-a-r-2-toy-soldiers/#1430100"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/03/mp_recess_final_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/13/f-e-a-r-2-toy-soldiers-dlc-will-be-free-for-all-in-april/">F.E.A.R. 2 'Toy Soldiers' DLC will be free for all in April</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 13 Mar 2009 15:53:00 EST.
